Trace element variations in stream sediments from an area in central Colorado are used to identify uraniferous granitoids on the basis of whole rock geochemical criteria developed to distinguish barren from metalliferous granitoids in Britan. These criteria are used to formulate an index based on the Pikes Peak batholith as a type uranium source rock. A computer model is described which uses exploration geochemical data, supplemented by airborne radiometric and geological data to estimate uranium resource potential. The development of vapour anomalies in one-and two-layer media, overlying vapour sources which have different shapes and different time-dependent stabilities, are examined. Theoretical concentration patterns are computed using two-dimensional finite difference numerical solutions of the diffusion equation. Calculated diffusion patterns are compared with in vitro experimental data, and their general features are shown to be comparable. Ternary (triangular) diagrams represent the projection into two dimensions of three or more components. During the present century they have been of particular importance in chemistry, the earth sciences and the studies of colour that underlie the development of geochemical colour maps, concepts which can be traced back to Newton. The use of multi-element colour-combined geochemical maps was developed at Imperial College between 1964 and 1979, and applied by the British Geological Survey in the 1980s. Between 1955 and 1975, ternary diagrams came to be commonly used in studies of mineralogical composition, while in igneous petrology the quartz-alkali feldspar-plagioclase double triangle has achieved increasing international acceptance. There is still a place for the use of ternary diagrams alongside sophisticated multivariate analysis. Examples are given from the northern Highlands of Scotland, with emphasis on lamprophyres and associated rocks. Rock volume data and an index of rock diversity type within 5.5 x 5.5 km map cells was compared with the use of an integrated score (based on a weighted combination of geochemical, geological and geophysical parameters derived from the hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaisance phase of the U.S. Department of Energy, National Uranium Resource Evaluation programme) as regression-based predictors for potential uranium production in the 19 700 km2 of the Pueblo quadrangle, Colorado. Ridge regression proved useful in identification of stable predictors in data with inherent correlation such as rock volumes.
