Search

Recent analyses of FGK stars in open clusters have helped clarify the precision with which a star's rotation rate and lithium content can be used as empirical indicators for its age. Here we apply this knowledge to stars observed by Kepler. Rotation periods are drawn from previous work; lithium is measured from new and archival Keck/HIRES spectra. We report rotation-based ages for 23,813 stars (harboring 795 known planets) for which our method is applicable. We find that our rotational ages recover the ages of stars in open clusters spanning 0.04-2.5 Gyr; they also agree with over 90% of the independent lithium ages. The resulting yield includes 63 planets younger than 1 Gyr at 2$\sigma$, and 109 with median ages below 1 Gyr. This is about half the number expected under the classic assumption of a uniform star formation history. The age distribution that we observe, rather than being uniform, shows that the youngest stars in the Kepler field are 3-5 times rarer than stars 3 Gyr old. This trend holds for both known planet hosts and for the parent stellar sample. We attribute this "demographic cliff" to a combination of kinematic heating and a declining star formation rate in the Galaxy's thin disk, and highlight its impact on the age distribution of known transiting exoplanets., Comment: AJ accepted. Hundreds of exoplanets between 1-1.8 times the size of the Earth have been discovered on close in orbits. However, these planets show such a diversity in densities that some appear to be made entirely of iron, while others appear to host gaseous envelopes. To test this diversity in composition, we update the masses of 5 rocky exoplanets (HD 93963 A b, Kepler-10 b, Kepler-100 b, Kepler-407 b, and TOI-1444 b) and present the confirmation of a new planet (TOI-1011) using 187 high precision RVs from Gemini/MAROON-X and Keck/KPF. Our updated planet masses suggest compositions closer to that of the Earth than previous literature values for all planets in our sample. In particular, we report that two previously identified ``super-Mercuries'' (Kepler-100 b and HD 93963 A b) have lower masses that suggest less iron-rich compositions. We then compare the ratio of iron to rock-building species to the abundance ratios of those elements in their host stars. These updated planet compositions do not suggest a steep relationship between planet and host star compositions, contradictory to previous results, and suggest that planets and host stars have similar abundance ratios., Comment: Submitted to AJ 09/30/2024

We report the sky-projected spin-orbit angle $\lambda$ for HD 191939 b, the innermost planet in a 6 planet system, using Keck/KPF to detect the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect. Planet b is a sub-Neptune with radius 3.4 $\pm$ 0.8 R$_{\oplus}$ and mass 10.0 $\pm$ 0.7 M$_{\oplus}$ with an RM amplitude $<$1 ms$^{-1}$. We find the planet is consistent with a well-aligned orbit, measuring $\lambda= \, $ 3.7 $\pm$ 5.0 degrees. Additionally, we place new constraints on the mass and period of the distant super-Jupiter, planet f, finding it to be 2.88 $\pm$ 0.26 $M_J$ on a 2898 $\pm$ 152 day orbit. With these new orbital parameters, we perform a dynamical analysis of the system and constrain the mutual inclination of the non-transiting planet e to be smaller than 12 degrees relative to the plane shared by the inner three transiting planets. Additionally, the further planet f is inclined off this shared plane, the greater the amplitude of precession for the entire inner system, making it increasingly unlikely to measure an aligned orbit for planet b. Through this analysis, we show that this system's wide variety of planets are all well-aligned with the star and nearly co-planar, suggesting that the system formed dynamically cold and flat out of a well-aligned proto-planetary disk, similar to our own solar system., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Measurements of the obliquities in exoplanet systems have revealed some remarkable architectures, some of which are very different from the Solar System. Nearly 200 obliquity measurements have been obtained through observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect. Here we report on observations of 19 planetary systems that led to 17 clear detections of the RM effect and 2 less secure detections. After adding the new measurements to the tally, we use the entire collection of RM measurements to investigate four issues that have arisen in the literature. i) Does the obliquity distribution show a peak at approximately 90$^\circ$? We find tentative evidence that such a peak does exist when restricting attention to the sample of sub-Saturn planets and hot Jupiters orbiting F stars. ii) Are high obliquities associated with high eccentricities? We find the association to be weaker than previously reported, and that a stronger association exists between obliquity and orbital separation, possibly due to tidal obliquity damping at small separations. iii) How low are the lowest known obliquities? Among hot Jupiters around cool stars, we find the dispersion to be $1.4\pm0.7^\circ$, smaller than the 6$^\circ$ obliquity of the Sun, which serves as additional evidence for tidal damping. iv) What are the obliquities of stars with compact and flat systems of multiple planets? We find that they generally have obliquities lower than $10^\circ$, with several remarkable exceptions possibly caused by wide-orbiting stellar or planetary companions., Comment: 47 pages, 43 figures. We report the observation of the transiting planet TOI-942c, a Neptunian planet orbiting a young K-type star approximately 50 Myr years old. Using Keck/HIRES, we observed a partial transit of the planet and detected an associated radial velocity anomaly. By modeling the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, we derived a sky-projected obliquity of $\left|\lambda\right|=24^{+14}_{-14}$ degrees, indicating TOI-942c is in a prograde and likely aligned orbit. Upon incorporation of the star's inclination and the planet's orbital inclination, we determined a true obliquity for TOI-942c of $\psi< 43$ degrees at 84\% confidence, while dynamic analysis strongly suggests TOI-942c is aligned with stellar spin and coplanar with the inner planet. Furthermore, TOI-942c is also a suitable target for studying atmospheric loss of young Neptunian planets that are likely still contracting from the heat of formation. We observed a blueshifted excess absorption in the H-alpha line at 6564.7 \AA, potentially indicating atmospheric loss due to photoevaporation. We report the recent discovery of two new eruptions of the recurrent nova M31N 2017-01e in the Andromeda galaxy. The latest eruption, M31N 2024-08c, reached $R=17.8$ on 2024 August 06.85 UT, $\sim2$ months earlier than predicted. In addition to this recent eruption, a search of archival PTF data has revealed a previously unreported eruption on 2014 June 18.46 UT that reached a peak brightness of $R\sim17.9$ approximately a day later. The addition of these two eruption timings has allowed us to update the mean recurrence time of the nova. We find $\langle T_\mathrm{rec} \rangle = 924.0\pm7.0$ days ($2.53\pm0.02$ yr), which is slightly shorter than our previous determination. Thus, M31N 2017-01e remains the nova with the second shortest recurrence time known, with only M31N 2008-12a being shorter. The development of large language models (LLMs) has been instrumental in advancing state-of-the-art natural language processing applications. Training LLMs with billions of parameters and trillions of tokens require sophisticated distributed systems that enable composing and comparing several state-of-the-art techniques in order to efficiently scale across thousands of accelerators. However, existing solutions are complex, scattered across multiple libraries/repositories, lack interoperability, and are cumbersome to maintain. Thus, curating and empirically comparing training recipes require non-trivial engineering effort. This paper introduces TorchTitan, an open-source, PyTorch-native distributed training system that unifies state-of-the-art techniques, streamlining integration and reducing overhead. TorchTitan enables 3D parallelism in a modular manner with elastic scaling, providing comprehensive logging, checkpointing, and debugging tools for production-ready training. It also incorporates hardware-software co-designed solutions, leveraging features like Float8 training and SymmetricMemory. As a flexible test bed, TorchTitan facilitates custom recipe curation and comparison, allowing us to develop optimized training recipes for Llama 3.1 and provide guidance on selecting techniques for maximum efficiency based on our experiences. We thoroughly assess TorchTitan on the Llama 3.1 family of LLMs, spanning 8 billion to 405 billion parameters, and showcase its exceptional performance, modular composability, and elastic scalability. By stacking training optimizations, we demonstrate accelerations of 65.08% with 1D parallelism at the 128-GPU scale (Llama 3.1 8B), an additional 12.59% with 2D parallelism at the 256-GPU scale (Llama 3.1 70B), and an additional 30% with 3D parallelism at the 512-GPU scale (Llama 3.1 405B) on NVIDIA H100 GPUs over optimized baselines.

Most robotic behaviours focus on either manipulation or locomotion, where tasks that require the integration of both, such as full-body throwing, remain under-explored. Throwing with a robot involves complex coordination between object manipulation and legged locomotion, which is crucial for advanced real-world interactions. This work investigates the challenge of full-body throwing in robotic systems and highlights the advantages of utilising the robot's entire body. We propose a deep reinforcement learning (RL) approach that leverages the robot's body to enhance throwing performance through a strategically designed curriculum to avoid local optima and sparse but informative reward functions to improve policy flexibility. The robot's body learns to generate additional momentum and fine-tune the projectile release velocity. Our full-body method achieves on average 47% greater throwing distance and 34% greater throwing accuracy than the arm alone, across two robot morphologies - an armed quadruped and a humanoid. We also extend our method to optimise robot stability during throws. The learned policy effectively generalises throwing to targets at any 3D point in space within a specified range, which has not previously been achieved and does so with human-level throwing accuracy. We successfully transferred this approach from simulation to a real robot using sim2real techniques, demonstrating its practical viability.

This paper investigates the behavior of mutual information, entanglement negativity, and multipartite correlations in holographic RG flows, particularly during phase transitions. Mutual information provides a UV-finite measure of total correlations between subsystems, while entanglement negativity and multipartite correlations offer finer insights into quantum structures, especially near critical points. Through numerical simulations, we show that while mutual information remains relatively smooth, both entanglement negativity and multipartite correlations exhibit sharp changes near phase transitions. These results support the hypothesis that multipartite correlations play a dominant role in signaling critical phenomena in strongly coupled quantum systems., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Over the past several decades, time-series photometry of CSPNe has yielded significant results including, but not limited to, discoveries of nearly 100 binary systems, insights into pulsations and winds in young white dwarfs, and studies of stars undergoing very late thermal pulses. We have undertaken a systematic study of optical photometric variability of cataloged CSPNe, using the epochal photometric data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). By applying appropriate variability metrics, we arrive at a list of 94 significantly variable CSPNe. Based on the timescales of the light-curve activity, we classify the variables broadly into short- and long-timescale variables. In this first paper in this series, we focus on the former, which is the majority class comprising 83 objects. We infer periods for six sources for the first time, and recover several known periodic variables. Among the aperiodic sources, most exhibit a jitter around a median flux with a stable amplitude, and a few show outbursts. We draw attention to WeSb 1, which shows a different kind of variability: prominent deep and aperiodic dips, resembling transits from a dust/debris disk. We find strong evidence for a binary nature of WeSb 1 (possibly an A- to G-type companion). The compactness of the emission lines and inferred high electron densities make WeSb 1 a candidate for either an EGB 6-type planetary nucleus, or a symbiotic system inside an evolved planetary nebula, both of which are rare objects. To demonstrate further promise with ZTF, we report three additional newly identified periodic sources that do not appear in the list of highly variable sources. With sizable volatile envelopes but smaller radii than the solar system ice giants, sub-Neptunes have been revealed as one of the most common types of planet in the galaxy. While the spectroscopic characterization of larger sub-Neptunes (2.5-4R$_\oplus$) has revealed hydrogen-dominated atmospheres, smaller sub-Neptunes (1.6--2.5R$_\oplus$) could either host thin, rapidly evaporating hydrogen-rich atmospheres or be stable metal-rich "water worlds" with high mean molecular weight atmospheres and a fundamentally different formation and evolutionary history. Here, we present the 0.6--2.8$\mu$m JWST NIRISS/SOSS transmission spectrum of GJ 9827 d, the smallest (1.98 R$_\oplus$) warm (T$_\mathrm{eq, A_B=0.3} \sim 620$K) sub-Neptune where atmospheric absorbers have been detected to date. Our two transit observations with NIRISS/SOSS, combined with the existing HST/WFC3 spectrum, enable us to break the clouds-metallicity degeneracy. We detect water in a highly metal-enriched "steam world" atmosphere (O/H of $\sim 4$ by mass and H$_2$O found to be the background gas with a volume mixing ratio of >31%). We further show that these results are robust to stellar contamination through the transit light source effect. We do not detect escaping metastable He, which, combined with previous nondetections of escaping He and H, supports the steam atmosphere scenario. In water-rich atmospheres, hydrogen loss driven by water photolysis happens predominantly in the ionized form which eludes observational constraints. We also detect several flares in the NIRISS/SOSS light-curves with far-UV energies of the order of 10$^{30}$ erg, highlighting the active nature of the star. Peer review is a critical process for ensuring the integrity of published scientific research. Confidence in this process is predicated on the assumption that experts in the relevant domain give careful consideration to the merits of manuscripts which are submitted for publication. With the recent rapid advancements in the linguistic capabilities of large language models (LLMs), a new potential risk to the peer review process is that negligent reviewers will rely on LLMs to perform the often time consuming process of reviewing a paper. In this study, we investigate the ability of existing AI text detection algorithms to distinguish between peer reviews written by humans and different state-of-the-art LLMs. Our analysis shows that existing approaches fail to identify many GPT-4o written reviews without also producing a high number of false positive classifications. To address this deficiency, we propose a new detection approach which surpasses existing methods in the identification of GPT-4o written peer reviews at low levels of false positive classifications. Our work reveals the difficulty of accurately identifying AI-generated text at the individual review level, highlighting the urgent need for new tools and methods to detect this type of unethical application of generative AI.

There have been many benchmarks for evaluating long-context language models (LCLMs), but developers often rely on synthetic tasks like needle-in-a-haystack (NIAH) or arbitrary subsets of tasks. It remains unclear whether they translate to the diverse downstream applications of LCLMs, and the inconsistency further complicates model comparison. We investigate the underlying reasons behind current practices and find that existing benchmarks often provide noisy signals due to low coverage of applications, insufficient lengths, unreliable metrics, and incompatibility with base models. In this work, we present HELMET (How to Evaluate Long-context Models Effectively and Thoroughly), a comprehensive benchmark encompassing seven diverse, application-centric categories. We also address many issues in previous benchmarks by adding controllable lengths up to 128k tokens, model-based evaluation for reliable metrics, and few-shot prompting for robustly evaluating base models. Consequently, we demonstrate that HELMET offers more reliable and consistent rankings of frontier LCLMs. Through a comprehensive study of 51 LCLMs, we find that (1) synthetic tasks like NIAH are not good predictors of downstream performance; (2) the diverse categories in HELMET exhibit distinct trends and low correlation with each other; and (3) while most LCLMs achieve perfect NIAH scores, open-source models significantly lag behind closed ones when the task requires full-context reasoning or following complex instructions -- the gap widens with increased lengths. We study continued training and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) of a language model (LM) to make effective use of long-context information. We first establish a reliable evaluation protocol to guide model development -- Instead of perplexity or simple needle-in-a-haystack (NIAH) tests, we use a broad set of long-context tasks, and we evaluate models after SFT with instruction data as this better reveals long-context abilities. Supported by our robust evaluations, we run thorough experiments to decide the data mix for continued pre-training, the instruction tuning dataset, and many other design choices. We find that (1) code repositories and books are excellent sources of long data, but it is crucial to combine them with high-quality short data; (2) training with a sequence length beyond the evaluation length boosts long-context performance; (3) for SFT, using only short instruction datasets yields strong performance on long-context tasks. Our final model, ProLong-8B, which is initialized from Llama-3 and trained on 40B tokens, demonstrates state-of-the-art long-context performance among similarly sized models at a length of 128K. ProLong outperforms Llama-3.18B-Instruct on the majority of long-context tasks despite having seen only 5% as many tokens during long-context training. Smart focal-plane and in-chip image processing has emerged as a crucial technology for vision-enabled embedded systems with energy efficiency and privacy. However, the lack of special datasets providing examples of the data that these neuromorphic sensors compute to convey visual information has hindered the adoption of these promising technologies. Neuromorphic imager variants, including event-based sensors, produce various representations such as streams of pixel addresses representing time and locations of intensity changes in the focal plane, temporal-difference data, data sifted/thresholded by temporal differences, image data after applying spatial transformations, optical flow data, and/or statistical representations. To address the critical barrier to entry, we provide an annotated, temporal-threshold-based vision dataset specifically designed for face detection tasks derived from the same videos used for Aff-Wild2. By offering multiple threshold levels (e.g., 4, 8, 12, and 16), this dataset allows for comprehensive evaluation and optimization of state-of-the-art neural architectures under varying conditions and settings compared to traditional methods. The accompanying tool flow for generating event data from raw videos further enhances accessibility and usability. We anticipate that this resource will significantly support the development of robust vision systems based on smart sensors that can process based on temporal-difference thresholds, enabling more accurate and efficient object detection and localization and ultimately promoting the broader adoption of low-power, neuromorphic imaging technologies. This paper investigates the finite-temperature behavior of Conformal Field Theory (CFT) in Rindler vacuum, focusing on the relation between acceleration and thermality in quantum field theory. We illustrate how uniformly accelerated observers perceive the vacuum as a thermal state via Unruh effect, shedding light on the thermal properties of Rindler horizon. Through numerical simulations of the heat kernel, Unruh temperature, Planck distribution, and detector response, we demonstrate that acceleration enhances the thermal characteristics of quantum fields. These results provide important insights into horizon-induced thermality, with significant implications for black hole thermodynamics and quantum gravity., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

In the $q^{-1}$-symmetric Askey scheme, namely the $q^{-1}$-Askey--Wilson, continuous dual $q^{-1}$-Hahn, $q^{-1}$-Al-Salam--Chihara, continuous big $q^{-1}$-Hermite and continuous $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials, we compute bilateral discrete and continuous orthogonality relations. We also derive a $q$-beta integral which comes from the continuous orthogonality relation for the $q^{-1}$-Askey--Wilson polynomials. In the $q\to 1^{-}$ limit, this $q$-beta integral corresponds to a beta integral of Ramanujan-type which we present and provide two proofs for.

Working memory $\unicode{x2013}$ the ability to remember recent events as they recede continuously into the past $\unicode{x2013}$ requires the ability to represent any stimulus at any time delay. This property requires neurons coding working memory to show mixed selectivity, with conjunctive receptive fields (RFs) for stimuli and time, forming a representation of 'what' $\times$ 'when'. We study the properties of such a working memory in simple experiments where a single stimulus must be remembered for a short time. The requirement of conjunctive receptive fields allows the covariance matrix of the network to decouple neatly, allowing an understanding of the low-dimensional dynamics of the population. Different choices of temporal basis functions lead to qualitatively different dynamics. We study a specific choice $\unicode{x2013}$ a Laplace space with exponential basis functions for time coupled to an "Inverse Laplace" space with circumscribed basis functions in time. We refer to this choice with basis functions that evenly tile log time as a Laplace Neural Manifold. Despite the fact that they are related to one another by a linear projection, the Laplace population shows a stable stimulus-specific subspace whereas the Inverse Laplace population shows rotational dynamics. The growth of the rank of the covariance matrix with time depends on the density of the temporal basis set; logarithmic tiling shows good agreement with data. We sketch a continuous attractor CANN that constructs a Laplace Neural Manifold. The attractor in the Laplace space appears as an edge; the attractor for the inverse space appears as a bump. This work provides a map for going from more abstract cognitive models of WM to circuit-level implementation using continuous attractor neural networks, and places constraints on the types of neural dynamics that support working memory.

This paper investigates the use of autoencoders and machine learning methods for detecting and analyzing quantum phase transitions in the Two-Component Bose-Hubbard Model. By leveraging deep learning models such as autoencoders, we investigate latent space representations, reconstruction error analysis, and cluster distance calculations to identify phase boundaries and critical points. The study is supplemented by dimensionality reduction techniques such as PCA and t-SNE for latent space visualization. This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

The BICEP3 and BICEP Array polarimeters are small-aperture refracting telescopes located at the South Pole designed to measure primordial gravitational wave signatures in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, predicted by inflation. Constraining the inflationary signal requires not only excellent sensitivity, but also careful control of instrumental systematics. Both instruments use antenna-coupled orthogonally polarized detector pairs, and the polarized sky signal is reconstructed by taking the difference in each detector pair. As a result, the differential response between detectors within a pair becomes an important systematic effect we must control. Additionally, mapping the intensity and polarization response in regions away from the main beam can inform how sidelobe levels affect CMB measurements. Extensive calibration measurements are taken in situ every austral summer for control of instrumental systematics and instrument characterisation. In this work, we detail the set of beam calibration measurements that we conduct on the BICEP receivers, from deep measurements of main beam response to polarized beam response and sidelobe mapping. We propose a low energy model for simulating an analog black hole on an optical lattice using ultracold atoms. Assuming the validity of the holographic principle, we employ the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which describes a system of randomly infinite range interacting fermions, also conjectured to be an exactly solvable UV-complete model for an extremal black hole in a higher dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dilaton gravity. At low energies, the SYK model exhibits an emergent conformal symmetry and is dual to the extremal black hole solution in near AdS2 spacetime. Furthermore, we show how the SYK maximally chaotic behaviour at large N limit, found to be dual to a gauge theory in higher dimensions, can also be employed as a non-trivial investigation tool for the holographic principle. The proposed setup is a theoretical platform to realize the SYK model with relevant exotic effects and behaviour at low energies as a highly non-trivial example of the AdS/CFT duality and a framework for studying black holes., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Nucleon structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have historically provided a critical observable in the study of partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, at very large parton momenta it is both experimentally and theoretically challenging to extract parton distributions due to the probable onset of non-perturbative contributions and the unavailability of high precision data at critical kinematics. Extraction of the neutron structure and the d-quark distribution have been further challenging due to the necessity of applying nuclear corrections when utilizing scattering data from a deuteron target to extract free neutron structure. However, a program of experiments has been carried out recently at the energy-upgraded Jefferson Lab electron accelerator aimed at significantly reducing the nuclear correction uncertainties on the d-quark distribution function at large partonic momentum. This allows leveraging the vast body of deuterium data covering a large kinematic range to be utilized for d-quark parton distribution function extraction. We present new data from experiment E12-10-002 carried out in Jefferson Lab Hall C on the deuteron to proton cross-section ratio at large BJorken-x. These results significantly improve the precision of existing data, and provide a first look at the expected impact on quark distributions extracted from global parton distribution function fits.

Leveraging over-the-air computations for model aggregation is an effective approach to cope with the communication bottleneck in federated edge learning. By exploiting the superposition properties of multi-access channels, this approach facilitates an integrated design of communication and computation, thereby enhancing system privacy while reducing implementation costs. However, the inherent electromagnetic interference in radio channels often exhibits heavy-tailed distributions, giving rise to exceptionally strong noise in globally aggregated gradients that can significantly deteriorate the training performance. To address this issue, we propose a novel gradient clipping method, termed Median Anchored Clipping (MAC), to combat the detrimental effects of heavy-tailed noise. We also derive analytical expressions for the convergence rate of model training with analog over-the-air federated learning under MAC, which quantitatively demonstrates the effect of MAC on training performance. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed MAC algorithm effectively mitigates the impact of heavy-tailed noise, hence substantially enhancing system robustness.

Recent evidence has shown that, contrary to expectations, it is difficult for users, especially novices, to teach robots tasks through LfD. This paper introduces a framework that leverages MT algorithms to train novices to become better teachers of robots, and verifies whether such teaching ability is retained beyond the period of training and generalises such that novices teach robots more effectively, even for skills for which training has not been received. A between-subjects study is reported, in which novice teachers are asked to teach simple motor skills to a robot. The results demonstrate that subjects that receive training show average 78.83% improvement in teaching ability (as measured by accuracy of the skill learnt by the robot), and average 63.69% improvement in the teaching of new skills not included as part of the training.

Data augmentation is known to contribute significantly to the robustness of machine learning models. In most instances, data augmentation is utilized during the training phase. Test-Time Augmentation (TTA) is a technique that instead leverages these data augmentations during the testing phase to achieve robust predictions. More precisely, TTA averages the predictions of multiple data augmentations of an instance to produce a final prediction. Although the effectiveness of TTA has been empirically reported, it can be expected that the predictive performance achieved will depend on the set of data augmentation methods used during testing. In particular, the data augmentation methods applied should make different contributions to performance. That is, it is anticipated that there may be differing degrees of contribution in the set of data augmentation methods used for TTA, and these could have a negative impact on prediction performance. In this study, we consider a weighted version of the TTA based on the contribution of each data augmentation. Some variants of TTA can be regarded as considering the problem of determining the appropriate weighting. We demonstrate that the determination of the coefficients of this weighted TTA can be formalized in a variational Bayesian framework. We also show that optimizing the weights to maximize the marginal log-likelihood suppresses candidates of unwanted data augmentations at the test phase.

The Big Data explosion has necessitated the development of search algorithms that scale sub-linearly in time and memory. While compression algorithms and search algorithms do exist independently, few algorithms offer both, and those which do are domain-specific. We present panCAKES, a novel approach to compressive search, i.e., a way to perform $k$-NN and $\rho$-NN search on compressed data while only decompressing a small, relevant, portion of the data. panCAKES assumes the manifold hypothesis and leverages the low-dimensional structure of the data to compress and search it efficiently. panCAKES is generic over any distance function for which the distance between two points is proportional to the memory cost of storing an encoding of one in terms of the other. This property holds for many widely-used distance functions, e.g. string edit distances (Levenshtein, Needleman-Wunsch, etc.) and set dissimilarity measures (Jaccard, Dice, etc.). We benchmark panCAKES on a variety of datasets, including genomic, proteomic, and set data. We compare compression ratios to gzip, and search performance between the compressed and uncompressed versions of the same dataset. panCAKES achieves compression ratios close to those of gzip, while offering sub-linear time performance for $k$-NN and $\rho$-NN search. We conclude that panCAKES is an efficient, general-purpose algorithm for exact compressive search on large datasets that obey the manifold hypothesis. We provide an open-source implementation of panCAKES in the Rust programming language.

The discontinuous operations inherent in quantization and sparsification introduce obstacles to backpropagation. This is particularly challenging when training deep neural networks in ultra-low precision and sparse regimes. We propose a novel, robust, and universal solution: a denoising affine transform that stabilizes training under these challenging conditions. By formulating quantization and sparsification as perturbations during training, we derive a perturbation-resilient approach based on ridge regression. Our solution employs a piecewise constant backbone model to ensure a performance lower bound and features an inherent noise reduction mechanism to mitigate perturbation-induced corruption. This formulation allows existing models to be trained at arbitrarily low precision and sparsity levels with off-the-shelf recipes. Furthermore, our method provides a novel perspective on training temporal binary neural networks, contributing to ongoing efforts to narrow the gap between artificial and biological neural networks.

Polymer mixtures fractionate between phases depending on their molecular weight. Consequently, by varying solvent conditions, a polydisperse polymer sample can be separated between phases so as to achieve a particular molecular weight distribution in each phase. In principle, predictive physics-based theories can help guide separation design and interpret experimental fractionation measurements. Even so, applying the standard Flory-Huggins model can present a computational challenge for mixtures with many polymeric components of different length, particularly for scarce components at the tails of a distribution. Here, we apply our recently-derived exact analytical solution of multi-component Flory-Huggins theory for polydisperse polymers to understand the principles of polymer fractionation for common molecular weight distributions. Our method reveals that polymer fractionation is highly sensitive to the shape, and in particular the tails, of this distribution. Our results highlight the need for considering the full molecular weight distribution in phase coexistence calculations.

Angular distributions of the elastic and inelastic deuteron-nucleus scattering off $^{24}$Mg, $^{28}$Si, $^{58}$Ni, $^{90}$Zr, $^{116}$Sn, and $^{208}$Pb have been measured at a beam energy of 98 MeV/nucleon, with the goal of constraining the deuteron optical potential in this kinematical regime, and to extract the reduced transition probabilities for the ground-state transitions to low-lying excited states of these nuclei. Two potential models were used in the analysis of the measured $(d,d)$ and $(d,d')$ data within the optical model and the distorted-wave Born approximation: the phenomenological optical model potential associated with the collective model of nuclear scattering, and the semi-microscopic double-folding model of the deuteron-nucleus potential based on a realistic density-dependent M3Y interaction. The deuteron optical potential and inelastic $(d,d')$ scattering form factors were calculated using these two potential models, allowing for a direct comparison between the potential models as well as the validation of the deduced $E\lambda$ transition rates., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We study the theory of a scalar in the fundamental representation of the internal supergroup $SU(N|M)$. Remarkably, for $M=N+1$ its tree-level mass does not receive quantum corrections at one loop from either self-coupling or interactions with gauge bosons and fermions. This property comes at the price of introducing both degrees of freedom with wrong statistics and with wrong sign kinetic terms. We detail a method to break $SU(N|M)$ down to its bosonic subgroup through a Higgs-like mechanism, allowing for the partial decoupling of the dangerous modes, and study the associated vacuum structure up to one loop., Comment: 32 pages + appendices

We analyze the steady viscoelastic fluid flow in slowly varying contracting channels of arbitrary shape and present a theory based on the lubrication approximation for calculating the flow rate-pressure drop relation at low and high Deborah ($De$) numbers. Unlike most prior theoretical studies leveraging the Oldroyd-B model, we describe the fluid viscoelasticity using a FENE-CR model and examine how the polymer chains' finite extensibility impacts the pressure drop. We employ the low-Deborah-number lubrication analysis to provide analytical expressions for the pressure drop up to $O(De^4)$. We further consider the ultra-dilute limit and exploit a one-way coupling between the parabolic velocity and elastic stresses to calculate the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid for arbitrary values of the Deborah number. Such an approach allows us to elucidate elastic stress contributions governing the pressure drop variations and the effect of finite extensibility for all $De$. We validate our theoretical predictions with two-dimensional numerical simulations and find excellent agreement. We show that, at low Deborah numbers, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid monotonically decreases with $De$, similar to the previous results for the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P fluids. However, at high Deborah numbers, in contrast to a linear decrease for the Oldroyd-B fluid, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid exhibits a non-monotonic variation due to finite extensibility, first decreasing and then increasing with $De$. Nevertheless, even at sufficiently high Deborah numbers, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid in the ultra-dilute and lubrication limits is lower than the corresponding Newtonian pressure drop.

Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors perform the advantages of compact design, faster reaction time, and simpler setup compared to other motion units such as pneumatic and hydraulic motors, especially its non-ferromagnetic property makes it a perfect match in MRI-compatible robotics systems compared to traditional DC motors. Hollow shaft motors address the advantages of being lightweight and comparable to solid shafts of the same diameter, low rotational inertia, high tolerance to rotational imbalance due to low weight, and tolerance to high temperature due to low specific mass. This article presents a prototype of a hollow cylindrical ultrasonic motor (HCM) to perform direct drive, eliminate mechanical non-linearity, and reduce the size and complexity of the actuator or end effector assembly. Singularly perturbed problems are known to have solutions with steep boundary layers that are hard to resolve numerically. Traditional numerical methods, such as Finite Difference Methods (FDMs), require a refined mesh to obtain stable and accurate solutions. As Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have been shown to successfully approximate solutions to differential equations from various fields, it is natural to examine their performance on singularly perturbed problems. The convection-diffusion equation is a representative example of such a class of problems, and we consider the use of PINNs to produce numerical solutions of this equation. We study two ways to use PINNS: as a method for correcting oscillatory discrete solutions obtained using FDMs, and as a method for modifying reduced solutions of unperturbed problems. For both methods, we also examine the use of input transformation to enhance accuracy, and we explain the behavior of input transformations analytically, with the help of neural tangent kernels.

Advances in lithium-metal anodes have inspired interest in discovery of Li-free cathodes, most of which are natively found in their charged state. This is in contrast to today's commercial lithium-ion battery cathodes, which are more stable in their discharged state. In this study, we combine calculated cathode voltage information from both categories of cathode materials, covering 5577 and 2423 total unique structure pairs, respectively. The resulting voltage distributions with respect to the redox pairs and anion types for both classes of compounds emphasize design principles for high-voltage cathodes, which favor later Period 4 transition metals in their higher oxidation states and more electronegative anions like fluorine or polyaion groups. Generally, cathodes that are found in their charged, delithiated state are shown to exhibit voltages lower than those that are most stable in their lithiated state, in agreement with thermodynamic expectations. Deviations from this trend are found to originate from different anion distributions between redox pairs. In addition, a machine learning model for voltage prediction based on chemical formulae is constructed, and shows state-of-the-art performance when compared to two established composition-based ML models for materials properties predictions, Roost and CrabNet.

We report the serendipitous discovery of a bow-shock nebula around the cataclysmic variable (CV) SY Cancri. In addition, SY Cnc lies near the edge of a faint Halpha-emitting nebula with a diameter of about 15'. The orientation of the bow shock is consistent with the direction of SY Cnc's proper motion. Nebulae are extremely rare around CVs, apart from those known to have undergone classical-nova (CN) outbursts; bow shocks and off-center nebulae are even more unusual. Nevertheless, the properties of SY Cnc and its nebulosity are strikingly similar to those of V341 Ara, another CV that is also associated with a bow shock and is likewise off-center with respect to its faint Halpha nebula. Both stars are binaries with optically thick accretion disks, belonging to the classes of Z Cam CVs or nova-like variables. We discuss three scenarios to explain the properties of the nebulae. They may have resulted from chance encounters with interstellar gas clouds, with the stars leaving in their wakes material that is recombining after being photoionized by UV radiation from the CVs. Alternatively, the large nebulae could be ejecta from unobserved CN outbursts in the recent past, which have been decelerated through collisions with the interstellar medium (ISM), while the stars continue to snowplow through the gas. Or the faint Halpha nebulae may be ambient ISM that was shock-ionized by a CN outburst in the past and is now recombining., Comment: Accepted by The Astronomical Journal

CLIP is one of the most popular foundational models and is heavily used for many vision-language tasks. However, little is known about the inner workings of CLIP. To bridge this gap we propose a study to quantify the interpretability in CLIP like models. We conduct this study on six different CLIP models from OpenAI and OpenCLIP which vary by size, type of pre-training data and patch size. Our approach begins with using the TEXTSPAN algorithm and in-context learning to break down individual attention heads into specific properties. We then evaluate how easily these heads can be interpreted using new metrics which measure property consistency within heads and property disentanglement across heads. Our findings reveal that larger CLIP models are generally more interpretable than their smaller counterparts. To further assist users in understanding the inner workings of CLIP models, we introduce CLIP-InterpreT, a tool designed for interpretability analysis. CLIP-InterpreT offers five types of analyses: property-based nearest neighbor search, per-head topic segmentation, contrastive segmentation, per-head nearest neighbors of an image, and per-head nearest neighbors of text.
