This study investigated relationships among home reading practices, shared book reading (SBR) behaviors, and child literacy outcomes in young children with cochlear implants in Baltimore, Maryland. Parents (N=18) completed a home reading questionnaire and recorded themselves reading books with their children at home. Shared book reading sessions were coded for interactive reading behaviors. Children's early language skills and literacy skills were also assessed. We explored variability in these behaviors with regard to demographic characteristics and type of book; these exploratory analyses revealed that parents used more literacy teaching techniques when reading the wordless picture book and that parent interaction and engagement and literacy teaching techniques were more frequent with younger children than with older children. While many families frequently used interactive reading behaviors, our analysis did not find significant relationships between the parent behaviors and children's literacy scores. However, there was an interaction between the "amount" of reading and cochlear implant experience such that more cochlear implant experience was associated with better reading outcomes "only" for the group of children who received more reading time. In a sample of young children with cochlear implants, reading time, cochlear implant experience, and child language skills were better predictors of reading outcomes than parents' frequency of SBR behaviors alone.

BackgroundCervical cancer oncogenesis starts with human papillomavirus (HPV) cell entry after binding to host cell surface receptors; however, the mechanism is not fully known. We examined polymorphisms in receptor genes hypothesized to be necessary for HPV cell entry and assessed their associations with clinical progression to precancer.MethodsAfrican American women (N = 1,728) from the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study were included. Two case-control study designs were used-cases with histology-based precancer (CIN3+) and controls without; and cases with cytology-based precancer [high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL)] and controls without. SNPs in candidate genes (SDC1, SDC2, SDC3, SDC4, GPC1, GPC2, GPC3, GPC4, GPC5, GPC6, and ITGA6) were genotyped using an Illumina Omni2.5-quad beadchip. Logistic regression was used to assess the associations in all participants and by HPV genotypes, after adjusting for age, human immunodeficiency virus serostatus, CD4 T cells, and three principal components for ancestry.ResultsMinor alleles in SNPs rs77122854 (SDC3), rs73971695, rs79336862 (ITGA6), rs57528020, rs201337456, rs11987725 (SDC2), rs115880588, rs115738853, and rs9301825 (GPC5) were associated with increased odds of both CIN3+ and HSIL, whereas, rs35927186 (GPC5) was found to decrease the odds for both outcomes (P value ≤ 0.01). Among those infected with Alpha-9 HPV types, rs722377 (SDC3), rs16860468, rs2356798 (ITGA6), rs11987725 (SDC2), and rs3848051 (GPC5) were associated with increased odds of both precancer outcomes.ConclusionsPolymorphisms in genes that encode binding receptors for HPV cell entry may play a role in cervical precancer progression.ImpactOur findings are hypothesis generating and support further exploration of mechanisms of HPV entry genes that may help prevent progression to cervical precancer.

Objectives: To evaluate the utility of regression analysis in the assessment of conduction slowing in diabetic distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSP) and in identifying superimposed demyelination beyond fiber loss. Background: Causes of conduction slowing beyond pure axonal loss has been attributed to an additional demyelinating component. We therefore evaluated the utility of regression analysis in the assessment of conduction slowing in diabetic DSP and in identifying superimposed demyelination beyond fiber loss. Methods: We previously established regression analysis to develop confidence intervals that assess the range of conduction slowing from primary demyelination in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). In this study, by using the regression equations, we analyzed conduction slowing in patients with diabetic DSP. Results: Mean conduction velocity (CV) was significantly slower in diabetic DSP than in the non-diabetic DSP for all tested nerves. More patients were found to fulfill the regression equation criteria in the diabetic group compared to the non-diabetic group (47.0 % vs. 23.3 %). The estimated likelihood of having more than two motor nerves with CV slowing in the demyelination range by American Academy of Neurology or regression equations criteria was significantly higher in the diabetic DSP (0.73) compared to non-diabetic DSP (0.52). Conclusions: Conduction slowing in diabetic DSP beyond what is expected exclusively from axonal loss could be identified by regression analysis.

Abstract Kawasaki disease (KD) is a multisystem inflammatory illness of infants and young children that can result in acute vasculitis. The mechanism of coronary artery aneurysms (CAA) in KD despite intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) treatment is not known. We performed a Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) association analysis in a racially diverse cohort of KD patients treated with IVIG, both using AHA guidelines. We defined coronary aneurysm (CAA) (N = 234) as coronary z ≥ 2.5 and large coronary aneurysm (CAA/L) (N = 92) as z ≥ 5.0. We conducted logistic regression models to examine the association of genetic variants with CAA/L during acute KD and with persistence >6 weeks using an additive model between cases and 238 controls with no CAA.
