Abstract

We continue the study of the Erd\H{o}s-Dushnik-Miller theorem (A graph with an uncountable set of vertices has either an infinite independent set or an uncountable clique) in set theory without the axiom of choice. We show that there are three inequivalent versions of this theorem and we give some results about the positions of these versions in the deductive hierarchy of weak choice principles.

3. Maximal \delta-separated sets in separable metric spaces and weak forms of choice

Abstract

We show that the statement ``In every separable pseudometric space there is a maximal non-strictly \delta-separated set.'' implies the axiom of choice for countable families of sets. This gives answers to a question of Dybowski and G\'{o}rka in [M. Dybowski and P. G\'{o}rka, The axiom of choice in metric measure spaces and maximal \delta-separated sets, Archive for Mathematical Logic 62, 735-749, 2023.]. We also prove several related results.

Abstract

This thesis explores the notion of opposition in the Sonetti romaneschi by the Roman poet Giuseppe Gioachino Belli (1791-1863). It sees the poet as a warring rebel on the literary scene and examines his poetics and rhetoric of war through his choice of form (the hallowed sonnet structure), language (the ‘rotten’ vernacular) and subject (the downtrodden, previously voiceless underclass); it shows that these cornerstones of Belli’s opus are in polemical response to literary stimuli and intimately connected to the political, religious and sociological upheavals in and beyond Rome in the troubled run-up to Unification. Chapter one, entitled ‘Breaking the mould’, draws on Belli’s explicit declaration of war on his literary predecessors, and considers the influence of the Milanese writer Carlo Porta, arguing that Belli is more inimical than amicable, and not the simple imitator as thought to date. Chapter two, ‘A passage of arms: possessing the dialogue sonnet’, maintains that the fulcrum of Belli’s antagonistic poetics and his realist enterprise lies in his unprecedented use of the dialogue sonnet form and the staging of direct debate. Chapter three, entitled ‘The Battle of the Sexes’, treats opposition at a thematic level, applying gender studies and related theory to Belli for the first time. Chapter four, ‘War and peace: the silent revolution’, examines Belli’s creation of a totally new literary language, fulfilling the criteria for what Deleuze and Guattari, within broadly Marxist parameters, would identify as a ‘minor literature’ in the work of Kafka, in which a major language is somehow wrested from its anchors of power, or ‘deterritorialized’, to subvert the literary world from within. The thesis shows that Belli is more revolutionary than previously thought as a literary innovator, and an understudied giant of modern European literature as opposed to the marginal figure the historiography is wont to maintain.

36. Development and Validation of a Measure to Assess Readiness to Advance Health and Equity: The Assessment for Advancing Community Transformation (AACT).

Abstract

Multi-sector partnerships are core in efforts to improve population health but are often not as fully developed or positioned to advance health and equity in their communities as believed to be. Therefore, measuring the collaborations multi-sector partnerships undertake is important to document the inputs, processes, and outcomes that evolve as they work together towards achieving their goals, which ultimately creates a greater sense of shared accountability. In this study we present the development and validation of the Assessment for Advancing Community Transformation (AACT), a new tool designed to measure readiness to advance health and health equity. Development of the AACT included initial item pool creation, external evaluation from five subject matter experts, and pilot testing (including user feedback surveys) among 103 individuals. Validation of the AACT was performed using a series of confirmatory factor analyses on an expanded dataset representing 352 individuals from 49 multi-sector collaboratives across the United States. The results of our study indicate the items in the AACT align to six domains created during the scale development process, and that the tool demonstrates desirable measurement characteristics for use in research, evaluation, and practice. Abstract

Products today must satisfy all customer requirements, particularly relating to Quality, performance and cost, if they are to survive in their respective markets. Against such a background of global competitiveness, it is universally accepted that the design process has the greatest influence on overall product success. In this thesis design has been explored from within an industrial environment, developing a methodology simultaneously with that of commercially successful products. Systematic design approaches have been proven to produce superior products, particularly where team working in large organisations is involved. In support of this activity, matrices offer a mechanism by which multi-variant problems can be evaluated. As part of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) approach, the 'House of Quality' matrix has been established as a viable means of translating customer needs into Quality products. Built upon the requirement to further develop a process known as self-pierce riveting, elements of performance, energy usage and statistical data have been effectively combined into a single measure of objective function. This has led to the development of a new form of correlation matrix, permitting the selection of factor combinations, through the introduction of Quantitative and Qualitative measures into the matrix 'roof. Understanding and dealing with cost issues is one of the most demanding challenges facing manufacturing industry today. Established as the activity most influential on final product cost, the design process must be structured to take account of financial considerations. By expanding the scope of matrices, cost data has been integrated in a quantitative manner into the product selection procedure.

Abstract

The objective of this guideline is to provide up-to-date, evidence-based recommendations for the management of SLE that builds upon the existing treatment guideline for adults living with SLE published in 2017. This will incorporate advances in the assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, non-pharmacological and pharmacological management of SLE. General approaches to management as well as organ-specific treatment, including lupus nephritis and cutaneous lupus, will be covered. This will be the first guideline in SLE using a whole life course approach from childhood through adolescence and adulthood. The guideline will be developed with people with SLE as an important target audience in addition to healthcare professionals. It will include guidance related to emerging approved therapies and account for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Technology Appraisals, National Health Service England clinical commissioning policies and national guidance relevant to SLE. The guideline will be developed using the methods and rigorous processes outlined in 'Creating Clinical Guidelines: Our Protocol' by the British Society for Rheumatology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
