To be white in Hawaii is to experience the alienation and subtle ostracism that other minorities experience all the time. Removed from the dominant white culture, a white person feels a loss of power and sense of victimization. The ethnic diversity of Hawaii is not a source of multicultural unity, as its boosters would have it. Rather, Hawaiian society is made up of many groups that each feel victimized for their own reasons. One finds it necessary to rely on one's own ethnic group for identity and support.

A growing movement in Hawaii calls for restoring the sovereignty of the Hawaiian nation. The group Ka Lahui Hawai'i believes the criterion for citizenship in such a state should be the possession of at least 50% Hawaiian blood, while activist Poka Laenui believes race is less important than relationship to the land in determining national allegiance.
