The Time-Domain And MultiMessenger (TDAMM) Communications Science Analysis Group (TDAMMCommSAG) was formulated to describe the unique technical challenges of communicating rapidly to and from NASA astrophysics missions studying the most variable, transient, and extreme objects in the Universe. This report describes the study of if and how the transition from current NASA-operated space and ground relays to commercial services will adequately serve these missions. Depending on the individual mission requirements and Concept of Operations (ConOps), TDAMM missions may utilize a rapid low-rate demand access service, a low-rate continuous contact service, low-latency downlink upon demand, or a higher-latency but regular relay service. The specific implementations can vary via space relay or direct to Earth, but requires flexibility and adaptability using modern software infrastructure. The study team reviewed the current state of NASA communications services and future commercial and NASA communications services under study and in development. Lightcurves of many classical novae deviate from the canonical "fast rise - smooth decline" pattern and display complex variability behavior. We present the first TESS-space-photometry-based investigation of this phenomenon. We use TESS Sector 41 full-frame images to extract a lightcurve of the slow Galactic nova V606 Vul that erupted nine days prior to the start of the TESS observations. The lightcurve covers the first of two major peaks of V606 Vul that was reached 19 days after the start of the eruption. The nova reached its brightest visual magnitude V=9.9 in its second peak 64 days after the eruption onset, following the completion of Sector 41 observations. To increase the confidence level of the extracted lightcurve, we performed the analysis using four different codes implementing the aperture photometry (Lightkurve, VaST) and image subtraction (TESSreduce, tequila_shots) and find good agreement between them. We performed ground-based photometric and spectroscopic monitoring to complement the TESS data. The TESS lightcurve reveals two features: periodic variations (0.12771d, 0.01mag average peak-to-peak amplitude) that disappeared when the source was within 1mag of peak optical brightness and a series of isolated mini-flares (with peak-to-peak amplitudes of up to 0.5mag) appearing at seemingly random times. We interpret the periodic variations as the result of azimuthal asymmetry of the photosphere engulfing the nova-hosting binary that was distorted by and rotating with the binary. Whereas we use spectra to associate the two major peaks in the nova lightcurve with distinct episodes of mass ejection, the origin of mini-flares remains elusive., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, submitted to ApJ; comments welcome

The 135 classical novae that we have discovered in M87 with two $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ imaging surveys appear to be strongly concentrated along that galaxy's jet. Detailed simulations show that the likelihood that this distribution occurred by chance is of order $0.3\%$. The novae near the jet display outburst characteristics (peak luminosities, colors and decline rates) that are indistinguishable from novae far from the jet. We explore whether the remarkable nova distribution could be caused by the jet's irradiation of the hydrogen-rich donors in M87's cataclysmic binaries. This explanation, and others extant in the literature which rely on increased binary mass transfer rates, fail by orders of magnitude in explaining the enhanced nova rate near the jet. An alternate explanation is the presence of a genuine surplus of nova binary systems near the jet, perhaps due to jet-induced star formation. This explanation fails to explain the lack of nova enhancement along M87's counterjet. M87 has been monitored with a cadence of 5 days over a 9 month-long span through the near-ultraviolet (NUV:F275W) and optical (F606W) filters of the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) of the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$. This unprecedented dataset yields the NUV and optical light and color curves of 94 M87 novae, characterizing the outburst and decline properties of the largest extragalactic nova dataset in the literature (after M31 and M81). We test and confirm nova modelers' prediction that recurrent novae cannot erupt more frequently that once every 45 days; show that there are zero rapidly recurring novae in the central $\sim$ 1/3 of M87 with recurrence times $ < $ 130 days; demonstrate that novae closely follow the K-band light of M87 to within a few arcsec of the galaxy nucleus; show that nova NUV light curves are as heterogeneous as their optical counterparts, and usually peak 5 to 30 days after visible light maximum; determine our observations' annual detection completeness to be 71 - 77\%; and measure the rate Rnova of nova eruptions in M87 as $352_{-37}^{+37}$/yr. The corresponding luminosity-specific classical nova rate for this galaxy is $7.91_{-1.20}^{+1.20}/yr/10^{10}L_\odot,_{K}$. These rates confirm that ground-based observations of extragalactic novae miss most faint, fast novae and those near the centers of galaxies. An annual M87 nova rate of 300 or more seems inescapable. We present 307 Type Ia supernova (SN) light curves from the first four years of the TESS mission. We use this sample to characterize the shapes of the early time light curves, measure the rise times from first light to peak, and search for companion star interactions. Using simulations, we show that light curves must have noise $<$10% of the peak to avoid biases in the early time light curve shape, restricting our quantitative analysis to 74 light curves. We find that the mean power law index $t^{\beta_1}$ of the early time light curves is 1.93$\pm$ 0.57 and the mean rise time to peak is 15.7 $\pm$ 3.5 days. We also estimate the underlying population distribution and find a Gaussian component with mean $\beta_1 = 2.29$, width 0.34, and a tail extending to values less than 1.0. We use model comparison techniques to test for the presence of companion interactions. In contrast to recent results in the literature, we find that the data can rarely distinguish between models with and without companion interactions, and caution is needed when claiming detections of early time flux excesses. Nevertheless, we find three high-quality SN light curves that tentatively prefer the addition of a companion interaction model, but the statistical evidence is not robust. We also find two SNe that disfavor the addition of a companion interaction model to a curved power law model. Taking the 74 SNe together, we calculate 3$\sigma$ upper limits on the presence of companion signatures to control for orientation effects that can hide companions in individual light curves. Our results rule out common progenitor systems with companions having Roche lobe radii $>$ 31 R$_{\odot}$ (99.9% confidence level) and disfavor companions having Roche lobe radii $>$ 10 R$_{\odot}$ (95% confidence level). Gamma-ray bursts produce afterglows that can be observed across the electromagnetic spectrum and can provide insight into the nature of their progenitors. While most telescopes that observe afterglows are designed to rapidly react to trigger information, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) continuously monitors sections of the sky at cadences between 30 minutes and 200 seconds. This provides TESS with the capability of serendipitously observing the optical afterglow of GRBs. We conduct the first extensive search for afterglows of known GRBs in archival TESS data reduced with the TESSreduce package, and detect 11 candidate signals that are temporally coincident with reported burst times. We classify 3 of these as high-likelihood GRB afterglows previously unknown to have been detected by TESS, one of which has no other afterglow detection reported on the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network. We classify 5 candidates as tentative and the remainder as unlikely. Using the afterglowpy package, we model each of the candidate light curves with a Gaussian and a top hat model to estimate burst parameters; we find that a mean time delay of $740\pm690\,$s between the explosion and afterglow onset is required to perform these fits. The high cadence and large field of view make TESS a powerful instrument for localising GRBs, with the potential to observe afterglows in cases when no other backup photometry is possible., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables

We motivate the cosmological science case of measuring Type Ia supernovae with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as part of the High Latitude Time Domain Survey. We discuss previously stated requirements for the science, and a baseline survey strategy. We discuss the various areas that must still be optimized and point to the other white papers that consider these topics in detail. Overall, the baseline case should enable an exquisite measurement of dark energy using SNe Ia from z=0.1 to z>2, and further optimization should only strengthen this once-in-a-generation experiment.

The current reference High-latitude time domain survey increases the completeness of transients with prism temporal time series data by adjusting the ratio of prism-to-imaging time. However, there are two other nobs that allow for a more complete prism coverage: prism cadence and exposure time. In this white paper, we discuss how changes to the prism cadence and exposure time -- in order to increase the fraction of observed transients with spectral time series -- affect supernova cosmology, transient typing and template building, and the study of rare transients., Comment: Submitted to the Roman Core Community Survey call for white papers

In this white paper, we review five top considerations for selecting locations of the fields of the Roman High-latitude Time Domain Survey. Based on these considerations, we recommend Akari Deep Field South (ADFS)/Euclid Deep Field South (EDFS) in the Southern Hemisphere has it avoids bright stars, has minimal Milky Way dust, is in Roman Continuous viewing zone, overlaps with multiple past and future surveys, and minimal zodiacal background variation. In the North, Extended Groth Strip (EGS) is good except for its zodiacal variation and Supernova/Acceleration Probe North (SNAP-N) and European Large Area Infrared Space Observatory Survey-North 1 (ELAIS N-1) are good except for their synergistic archival data., Comment: Submitted to the Roman Core Community Survey call for white papers

The current proposal for the High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS) is two tiers (wide and deep) of multi-band imaging and prism spectroscopy with a cadence of five days (Rose et al., 2021). The five-day cadence is motivated by the desire to measure mid-redshift SNe where time dilation is modest as well as to better photometrically characterize the transients detected. This white paper does not provide a conclusion as to the best cadence for the HLTDS. Rather, it collects a set of considerations that should be used for a careful study of cadence by a future committee optimizing the Roman survey. This study should optimize the HLTDS for both SN Ia cosmology and other transient science.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's (RST) Wide Field Imager (WFI) is equipped with a slitless prism that can be used for spectroscopic discovery and follow-up of explosive transients at high redshift as part of its High Latitude Time Domain Survey. This is new and unique spectroscopic capability, not only for its original purpose for cosmology, but also for other types of explosive transients. This white paper is intended to help make this new capability more clear to the community. The depth of the RST prism compared to ground-based spectrographs is explored, showing that the RST prism will be unrivaled in the observer-frame NIR. The influence of the selected sky locations on the speed and homogeneity of a RST prism survey is also estimated. This unique new capability should be considered when balancing the HLTDS time devoted to cadenced imaging and spectroscopy.

While the sample of confirmed exoplanets continues to increase, the population of transiting exoplanets around early-type stars is still limited. These planets allow us to investigate the planet properties and formation pathways over a wide range of stellar masses and study the impact of high irradiation on hot Jupiters orbiting such stars. We report the discovery of TOI-615b, TOI-622b, and TOI-2641b, three Saturn-mass planets transiting main sequence, F-type stars. The planets were identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and confirmed with complementary ground-based and radial velocity observations. TOI-615b is a highly irradiated ($\sim$1277 $F_{\oplus}$) and bloated Saturn-mass planet (1.69$^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$$R_{Jup}$ and 0.43$^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$$M_{Jup}$) in a 4.66 day orbit transiting a 6850 K star. TOI-622b has a radius of 0.82$^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$$R_{Jup}$ and a mass of 0.30$^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$~$M_{Jup}$ in a 6.40 day orbit. Despite its high insolation flux ($\sim$600 $F_{\oplus}$), TOI-622b does not show any evidence of radius inflation. TOI-2641b is a 0.39$^{+0.02}_{-0.04}$$M_{Jup}$ planet in a 4.88 day orbit with a grazing transit (b = 1.04$^{+0.05}_{-0.06 }$) that results in a poorly constrained radius of 1.61$^{+0.46}_{-0.64}$$R_{Jup}$. Additionally, TOI-615b is considered attractive for atmospheric studies via transmission spectroscopy with ground-based spectrographs and $\textit{JWST}$. KT Eridani was a very fast nova in 2009 peaking at V=5.42 mag. We marshal large data sets of photometry to finally work out the nature of KT Eri. From the TESS light curve, as confirmed with our radial velocity curve, we find an orbital period of 2.61595 days. With our 272 spectral energy distributions from simultaneous BVRIJHK measures, the companion star has a temperature of 6200$\pm$500 K. Our century-long average in quiescence has V=14.5. With the Gaia distance (5110$^{+920}_{-430}$ parsecs), the absolute magnitude is +0.7$\pm$0.3. We converted this absolute magnitude (corrected to the disc light alone) to accretion rates, with a full integration of the alpha-disc model. This accretion rate is very high at 3.5x10$^{-7}$ solar masses per year. Our search and analysis of archival photographs shows that no eruption occurred from 1928--1954 or after 1969. With our analysis of the optical light curve, the X-ray light curve, and the radial velocity curve, we derive a white dwarf mass of 1.25$\pm$0.03 solar masses. With the high white dwarf mass and very-high accretion rate, KT Eri must require a short time to accumulate the required mass to trigger the next nova event. Our detailed calculations give a recurrence time-scale of 12 years with a total range of 5--50 years. When combined with the archival constraints, we conclude that the recurrence time-scale must be between 40--50 years. So, KT Eri is certainly a recurrent nova, with the prior eruption remaining undiscovered in a solar gap of coverage from 1959 to 1969., Comment: MNRAS in press

This work presents a set of studies addressing the use of the low-dispersion slitless prism on Roman for SN spectroscopy as part of the Roman High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS). We find SN spectral energy distributions including prism data carry more information than imaging alone at fixed total observing time, improving redshift measurements and sub-typing of SNe. The Roman field of view will typically include ~ 10 SNe Ia at observable redshifts at a range of phases (the multiplexing of host galaxies is much greater as they are always present), building up SN spectral time series without targeted observations. We show that fitting these time series extracts more information than stacking the data over all the phases, resulting in a large improvement in precision for SN Ia subclassification measurements. A prism on Roman thus significantly enhances scientific opportunities for the mission, and is particularly important for the Roman SN cosmology program to provide the systematics-controlled measurement that is a focus of the Roman dark energy mission. Optimizing the prism parameters, we conclude that the blue cutoff should be set as blue as the prism image quality allows (~ 7500A), the red cutoff should be set to ~ 18000A to minimize thermal background, and the two-pixel dispersion should be >~ 70., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present results from simulating slitless spectroscopic observations with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's (Roman) Wide-Field Instrument (WFI) P127 prism spanning 0.75 $\mu m$ to 1.8 $\mu m$. We quantify the efficiency of recovered Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) redshifts, as a function of P127 prism exposure time, to guide planning for future observing programs with the Roman prism. Generating the two-dimensional dispersed images and extracting one-dimensional spectra is done with the slitless spectroscopy package pyLINEAR along with custom-written software. From the analysis of 1698 simulated SN Ia P127 prism spectra, we show the efficiency of recovering SN redshifts to $z\lesssim3.0$, highlighting the exceptional sensitivity of the Roman P127 prism. Redshift recovery is assessed by setting a requirement of $\sigma_z = (\left|z - z_\mathrm{true} \right|)/(1+z) \leq 0.01$. We find that 3 hr exposures are sufficient for meeting this requirement, for $\gtrsim 50\%$ of the sample of mock SNe Ia at $z\approx2$ and within $\pm5$ days of rest-frame maximum light in the optical. We also show that a 1 hr integration of Roman can achieve the same precision in completeness to a depth of $24.4 \pm 0.06$ AB mag (or $z\lesssim 1$). NASA will launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) in the second half of this decade, which will allow for a generation-defining measurement of dark energy through multiple probes, including Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). To improve decisions on survey strategy, we have created the first simulations of realistic Roman images that include artificial SNe Ia injected as point sources in the images. Our analysis combines work done on Roman simulations for weak gravitational lensing studies as well as catalog-level simulations of SN samples. We have created a time series of images over two years containing $\sim$ 1,050 SNe Ia, covering a 1 square degree subarea of a planned 5 square degree deep survey. We have released these images publicly for community use along with input catalogs of all injected sources. We create secondary products from these images by generating coadded images and demonstrating recovery of transient sources using image subtraction. We perform first-use analyses on these images in order to measure galaxy-detection efficiency, point source-detection efficiency, and host-galaxy association biases. We simulate the scientific performance of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) High Latitude Survey (HLS) on dark energy and modified gravity. The 1.6 year HLS Reference survey is currently envisioned to image 2000 deg$^2$ in multiple bands to a depth of $\sim$26.5 in Y, J, H and to cover the same area with slit-less spectroscopy beyond z=3. The combination of deep, multi-band photometry and deep spectroscopy will allow scientists to measure the growth and geometry of the Universe through a variety of cosmological probes (e.g., weak lensing, galaxy clusters, galaxy clustering, BAO, Type Ia supernova) and, equally, it will allow an exquisite control of observational and astrophysical systematic effects. In this paper we explore multi-probe strategies that can be implemented given WFIRST's instrument capabilities. We model cosmological probes individually and jointly and account for correlated systematics and statistical uncertainties due to the higher order moments of the density field. We explore different levels of observational systematics for the WFIRST survey (photo-z and shear calibration) and ultimately run a joint likelihood analysis in N-dim parameter space. We find that the WFIRST reference survey alone (no external data sets) can achieve a standard dark energy FoM of >300 when including all probes. This assumes no information from external data sets and realistic assumptions for systematics. Our study of the HLS reference survey should be seen as part of a future community driven effort to simulate and optimize the science return of WFIRST., Comment: comments welcome

While Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) are one of the most mature cosmological probes, the next era promises to be extremely exciting in the number of different ways SNe Ia are used to measure various cosmological parameters. Here we review the experiments in the 2020s that will yield orders of magnitudes more SNe Ia, and the new understandings and capabilities to constrain systematic uncertainties at a level to match these statistics. We then discuss five different cosmological probes with SNe Ia: the conventional Hubble diagram for measuring dark energy properties, the distance ladder for measuring the Hubble constant, peculiar velocities and weak lensing for measuring sigma8 and strong-lens measurements of H0 and other cosmological parameters. For each of these probes, we discuss the experiments that will provide the best measurements and also the SN Ia-related systematics that affect each one., Comment: Science White paper submitted to Astro2020 Decadal Survey. We report a multiwavelength (X-ray, ultraviolet/optical/infrared, radio) analysis of the relativistic tidal disruption event candidate Sw J2058+05 from 3 months to 3 yr post-discovery in order to study its properties and compare its behavior with that of Sw J1644+57. Our main results are as follows. (1) The long-term X-ray light curve of Sw J2058+05 shows a remarkably similar trend to that of Sw J1644+57. After a prolonged power-law decay, the X-ray flux drops off rapidly by a factor of $\gtrsim 160$ within a span of $\Delta$$t$/$t$ $\le$ 0.95. Associating this sudden decline with the transition from super-Eddington to sub-Eddington accretion, we estimate the black hole mass to be in the range of $10^{4-6}$ M$_{\odot}$. (2) We detect rapid ($\lesssim 500$ s) X-ray variability before the dropoff, suggesting that, even at late times, the X-rays originate from close to the black hole (ruling out a forward-shock origin). (3) We confirm using HST and VLBA astrometry that the location of the source coincides with the galaxy's center to within $\lesssim 400$ pc (in projection). (4) We modeled Sw J2058+05's ultraviolet/optical/infrared spectral energy distribution with a single-temperature blackbody and find that while the radius remains more or less constant at a value of $63.4 \pm 4.5$ AU ($\sim 10^{15}$ cm) at all times during the outburst, the blackbody temperature drops significantly from $\sim$ 30,000 K at early times to a value of $\sim$ 15,000 K at late times (before the X-ray dropoff).
