Abstract

When it comes to the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and the effectiveness of measures against the disease, many citizens worldwide do not trust their governments or health authorities. This brief essay discusses several psychological mechanisms which, under certain conditions, lead people to ignore important sources of information and hinder effective management of the epidemic. 11. Perspective-Taking Does Not Reduce Victim Blaming in Work-Related Situations.

Abstract

According to the just-world theory, people tend to blame innocent victims for the misfortune they experienced to preserve the belief in a just world. Our preregistered experimental study (N = 404; a university participants pool) employed work-related scenarios to test the possibility of reducing victim-blaming by taking a victim’s perspective. We also explored whether “victim-blaming” occurs for both undeserved negative and positive outcomes, i.e. attributions of blame or virtue in scenarios including demotions, dismissals, public reprimands, and removal of responsibilities as negative outcomes; and bonuses, promotions, salary raises, and job hirings as positive outcomes. We found that victim-blaming followed from the just-world belief only in scenarios where an individual gains unjust benefit. The belief in a just world could thus lead to the misattribution of positive work outcomes and could result in biased human resources management. Taking the victim’s perspective did not reduce attributions of blame and virtue. However, participants considered the outcomes more deserved when they took the perpetrator’s perspective. This finding may be a warning that if a perpetrator’s perception framework is more accessible for assessing a particular situation, the victims will be blamed more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

On the 1st of April 2006, an amendment to the Act on State Social Support came into force in the Czech Republic. This amendment more than doubled the value of the one-off birth grant. The increase was announced less than nine months ahead of implementation and only mothers from low-income households were eligible. We explored whether the change of the birth grant provided enough financial incentive to affect the timing of childbirths. We utilized time fixed-effects regression models to capture the effect of the intervention on the number of births using an official dataset which covers daily births between the years of 2000 and 2018. The 1st of April saw the largest value of the adjusted relative number of births for the entire year 2006 and our findings show that between 100 and 244 births were postponed to the first week of April. We found evidence that part of the shift was caused by postponing C-section deliveries, which were overrepresented in the first week of April, and accounted for 40% of the birth-shifts. Abstract

Providing people with more information and more options may seem as a good policy. However, because of limited attention and cognitive resources, people are not able to use all available information and freedom of choice effectively to achieve their own best interests. When cognitive resources and attention are depleted, decision making becomes shallow and intuitive, often unable to take important aspects of given situations into account - even though this information is readily available. An intuitive decision making may lead to suboptimal outcomes by overestimating the importance of the most salient cues and disregarding the less obvious future consequences. Although this creates a demand for decision making aides that could be satisfied by markets, policy regulation may be necessary in some areas. Abstract

This essay discusses the fraud triangle, or how factors such as opportunity to cheat, motivation to cheat or ability to rationalize or justify dishonest behavior lead to dishonesty. The fraud triangle is applied on behavior of professionals active in fields such as medicine, education, research and science or clergy. Evidence shows that even in these fields, which attract more altruistic individuals, the fraud triangle factors predicts emergence of behavior in breach of ethical standards. In the conclusion several measures for reducing dishonesty are discussed. Abstract

The article presents an application of the cost-benefit analysis to human sexual behavior. We suggest that an event or occasion which lowers the costs of sex - such as increasing free time, decreasing health risks of sexually transmitted diseases or lowering the probability of parenthood (or costs connected with parenthood) - usually leads to an increase in sexual activity. Although the reviewed studies concerning these effects confirm our predictions, findings are not robust, e.g. a vaccination against STDs does not always lead to an increase in sexual activity. Abstract

This experimental field-study aims to test the effect of selection in a cheating-enabling or cheating-prohibiting environment on the intensity of cheating. By using a real-world situation, we aim to examine the external validity of our previous laboratory findings (Houdek et al., 2020). The field experiment will be conducted in cooperation with a Prague based company that creates software products using machine-learning technology. For these purposes, the company hires temporary employees for a so-called "annotation," that is, marking of specific objects in photographs, which are then used for training of neural networks. Employees are paid by the hour. In this study, we will analyze choices and behavior of employees hired to perform the annotation task. Employees will be given an option to choose on which one of two projects they want to work. The projects will differ only in the way in which the time spent on the task is reported. In the manual reporting (MR) project, the participants will write a statement of hours worked and they will send it to a project manager after their work is completed. As they will be able to misreport the number of hours, cheating is enabled in the MR project. In the automatic reporting (AR) project, the hours will be counted automatically and the participants will only confirm the hours worked via email to a project manager. Cheating will therefore not be possible in the AR project. One-third of employees will not be given the option to choose and will be assigned directly to the MR and thus serve as a control group. Otherwise, all work requirements will be the same for all employees.
