Two new muricids are described from southern Oman. Favartia (Pygmaepterys) dhojarensis n. sp. is not related to any other species from the same area but is compared to Favartia (Pygmaepterys) alfredensis (Bartsch, 1915) and F. (P.) maraisi (Yokes, 1978) from South Africa. Typhinellus mirbatensis n. sp. is compared with T. amoenus (Houart, 1994) from South Africa and Madagascar, Bozzetti, 2007 from Madagascar and the Gulf of Aden (new locality) and T. labiatus Cristofori & Jan, 1832 from the Mediterranean and northeastern Atlantic.

There are seven known living species of Typhinellus. Five species occur in the Indo-West Pacific: T. amoenus Houart, 1994 ranges from Natal, South Africa to Somalia with other records off Quissico, southern Mozambique (MNHN); T. androyensis Bozzetti, 2007, described from south Madagascar and also present in the Gulf of Aden (RH coll.); T. bicolor Bozzetti, 2007 described from and presently restricted to southern Madagascar; T. insolitus Houart, 1991 from the Loyalty Ridge and T. occlusus (Garrard, 1963) described from Queensland, Australia and also recorded from southern Philippine Islands. A single species, Typhinellus labiatus (Cristofori & Jan, 1832), occurs throughout the Mediterranean and off the Atlantic coasts of Morocco and southern Spain (Houart, 2001). This species was also recorded from the Canary Islands (Nordsieck & Garcia Talavera, 1979) and off Dakar, Senegal (MNHN and Marche Marchad, 1958). The specimen recorded from the Gulf of Oman in Houart (2001: 114) turned out to be T. androyensis (see above) while the one from Somalia, also in Houart (2001: 114) probably also refers to this species. Another species, Typhinellus lamyi Garrigues & Merle, 2014, was recently described from Guadeloupe. It seems that only one fossil species, T. chipolanus (Gertman, 1969) from late lower Miocene (Burdigalian) of Florida occurs in the Western Atlantic. Two additional species will be described from south Madagascar (Houart & Héros, in press).

Four new species of Muricidae are described from New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and compared with related species. One Timbellus species was collected in New Caledonia. Two other species are described from Papua New Guinea, respectively in Chicopinnatus and Dermomurex. The fourth species, also belonging in Chicopinnatus, originates from Indonesia.

We used a molecular phylogenetic approach to investigate species delimitations and diversification in the mussel drills of the Ocinebrina edwardsii complex by means of a combination of nuclear (internal transcribed spacer 2, ITS2) and mitochondrial [cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S] sequences. Our sample included 243 specimens ascribed to seven currently accepted species from 51 sites. Five of the samples were from either the type locality of a nominal species or a close nearby locality (O. edwardsii from Corsica, O. carmelae and O. piantonii from the Kerkennah Islands, O. hispidula from the Gulf of Gabès and O. leukos from the Canary Islands), one from the inferred original locality (O. ingloria from Venice Lagoon), and specimens assigned in the recent literature to O. nicolai. We used a combination of distance- and tree-based species delimitation methods to identify Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs) to compare with the a?priori species identifications. The consensus tree obtained by BEAST on the COI alignment allows the recognition of several distinct clades supported by the three species delimitation methods employed. The eight-MOTUs scenario, shared by the Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD) and Generalized Mixed Yule-Coalescent (GMYC) methods, comprises the following major clades: clade A contains the south Tunisian species Ocinebrina piantonii Cecalupo, Buzzurro & Mariani from which the sympatric taxon O. carmelae Cecalupo, Buzzurro & Mariani (new synonym) cannot be separated; clades B and C bring together all populations from the Aegean Sea and some from the Ionian Sea, respectively; clade D groups, on the one hand, the south Tunisian samples morphologically assigned to O. hispidula Pallary and, on the other, Atlantic and Alboran Sea samples (including the Canarian taxon O. leukos Houart); clade E includes a sample from the type locality of O. edwardsii and several samples from the Tyrrhenian Sea; clades F and G correspond to a few samples from the Venice Lagoon and the Tyrrhenian Sea, respectively; clade H groups the bulk of samples from the Adriatic Sea, including samples from the Venice Lagoon morphologically identified as Ocinebrina ingloria (Crosse), and some from the Ionian Sea. No final conclusions could be reached to reconcile the currently recognized morphological taxa with the clades suggested by the COI data. The geographical structure proposed by the mitochondrial markers is similar to that found in other marine invertebrates and partially corresponds to the species defined by shell characters. We propose here a framework for the revision of the Ocinebrina edwardsii species complex, suggesting a geographical pattern for the diversification of this group in the studied area.

The validity of the muricid subfamily Ergalataxinae has recently been confirmed with molecular data, but its composition and the relationships among its constituent genera remain unclear. In order to investigate this, we use four genes (28S rRNA, 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) to construct a Bayesian phylogeny of 52 ergalataxine species in 18 genera, representing c. 40% of the currently accepted species and 86% of the genera. This is the most complete phylogeny of this taxonomically confusing subfamily yet produced. Our results indicate the polyphyly of many traditional genera, including Morula, Pascula and Orania. In order to improve the correspondence between classification and phylogeny, we restrict the definition of Morula, resurrect Tenguella and elevate Oppomorus to full genus, but describe no new genera. Several species in this analysis could not be identified and may be new, but we do not describe them. Further molecular and morphological analyses, in the context of this framework, should help to resolve the remaining ambiguities in the classification of this subfamily. The oldest fossil member of the Ergalataxinae known to us is of Early Oligocene age.

The northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean small mussel drills of the Ocinebrina aciculata complex are here revised and consist of at least 3 species. The type species, Ocinebrina aciculata (Lamarck, 1822), characterized by a slender shell with rounded whorls and primary and secondary spiral cords of approximately similar size, lives throughout the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea at depths usually ranging between 0 and 105 m. Its synonymy is here stabilized by a neotype selection for Murex corallinus Scacchi, 1836. Ocinebrina corallinoides Pallary, 1912 (=Ocinebrina buzzurroi Cecalupo and Mariani, 2008, new synonymy), characterized by a strongly elongate and weakly convex shell and primary and secondary spiral cords of approximately similar size, is endemic to the Gulf of Gabès and is here considered a distinct species, pending genetic studies. Ocinebrina reinai n. sp. is here described from the central Mediterranean Sea (where it is sympatric with O. aciculata) on the basis of morphological diagnostic features of shell (rarest presence of labral tooth, commoner presence of infrasutural apertural denticle, dark spots on the ribs and spiral sculpture with differently sized primary and secondary cords and smaller threads) and radula, confirmed by genetic data. Divergence in COI sequences with sympatric samples of O. aciculata (>7%), confirm their status as a distinct species. A comparative table reporting diagnostic features of the congeneric species of the complex and those with which the new species was previously misidentified is offered.

Gastropods are among the most studied group in Antarctica, and taxa with an advanced status of systematic knowledge can be used as a model to study how oceanographic and climatic patterns shaped Recent faunal assemblages. Within the ongoing study of the muricid phylogeny, we have analysed molecular and morphological data from species traditionally ascribed to the muricid subfamily Trophoninae. Particularly, the availability of specimens collected in the Southern Ocean and surrounding basins allowed to demonstrate as the genera Pagodula, Xymenopsis, Xymene and Trophonella, which are traditionally classified in the Trophoninae, actually belong to a distinct lineage, for which the new subfamily Pagodulinae is herein introduced. We propose and discuss a possible framework for the origin and radiation of Antarctic muricids.

A small muricid collected at 414 m off the Hawaiian Island of Oahu is described and compared, on the basis of shell characters only, with a syntype and two other specimens of Scabrotrophon kamchatkanus (Dall, 1902) (new combination) from the Northern Pacific. SEM images of the operculum, radula, and of the penis are illustrated for the new species.

Fifty-eight muricid species were collected during recent expeditions to Fiji, including 3 new species. A review of the literature added another 37 species reliably recorded from the archipelago, bringing the total muricid fauna of Fiji to 95 species. Twenty-five species, including 14 shared with Fiji, are reported from Tonga. Bouchetia n. gen. is described for Poirieria (Paziella) vaubanensis Houart,1986, originally described from New Caledonia and now recorded from Fiji. Conchatalos spinula n. sp. and Prototyphis gracilis n. sp. are described from Fiji; Murexsul merlei n. sp. is described from Fiji and Tonga. Attiliosa caledonica (Jousseaume, 1881), formerly treated as a synonym or subspecies of Attiliosa nodulifera (Sowerby, 1841), is recognized as a valid species, as both species co-occur in Fiji without intermediates. Pascula ambonensis Houart, 1996, Tritonidea lefevreiana Tapparone Canefri, 1880 and Pentadactylus paucimaculatus Sowerby, 1903 are reclassified in Cytharomorula Kuroda, 1953.

Ergalatax junionae nomen novum is proposed as replacement name for Morula martensi Dall, 1923, from the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. The latter name is a junior secondary homonym of Pentadactylus martensi Schepman,1892, from the Red Sea, of which E. obscura Houart, 1996, is here considered as junior synonym. Ergalatax,junionae nomen novum is compared with Ergalatax martensi (Schepman) and E. margariticola (Broderip, 1833). The geographical distribution of E. junionae and E. martensi is updated and the introduced Mediterranean species is identified as E. junionae.

Typhisopsis Jousseaume, 1880, and Typhisala Jousseaume, 1881, are redescribed and the included species reviewed. Typhisopsis coronatus (Broderip, 1833) is considered as the senior synonym of T quadratus (Hinds, 1843), Murex siphoniferus, Lesson, 1844, and Typhis martyria Dall, 1902. Ill addition, Typhisopsis carolskoglundae new species is described from, western Panama. Its range extends to Sonora, Mexico. The new species is compared with Typhisopsis coronatus, Typhisala grandis (A. Adams, 1855) and T clarki (Keen and Campbell, 1964).

Scabrotrophon inspiratum new species is described from Vanuatu and compared with S. scarlatoi (Golikov and Sirenko, 1992) from the Kurile Islands and with S. regina (Houart, 1985) from the Philippine Islands. The three species are illustrated.

Eight Recent species and two subspecies are included in Haustellum. The species are described and discussed. A new species, Haustellum bondarevi n. sp. is described from Saya de Malha Bank, Western Indian Ocean. Fourteen species and three subspecies from the Indo-West Pacific are included in Vokesimurex Petuch, 1994.

Two new species of the family Muricidae are described. Chicoreus (Siratus) colellai, from off Veracruz, eastern Mexico, is compared with C. (S.) articulates (Reeve, 1845), and differs from this latter species in many aspects. C. (S.) caudacurta, from off Puerto Rico, is somewhat similar to C. (S.) beauii (Fischer & Bernardi, 1857), but differs in having a broad, paucispiral protoconch, a higher spire, and a shorter siphonal canal.

The following new species of Muricidae are described, and compared with related species Attiliosa edingeri and Favartia eastorum from Western Australia, Favartia deynzeri from the Red Sea, Apixystus rippingalei from Queensland, Trophonopsis bassetti from New South Wales and Queensland, Omnia rosadoi from Mozambique, Ergalatax dattilioi from the Philippine Islands, Indonesia, and Japan, and Thais herberti from South Africa.

Trophon larae n. sp. is described and compared with T. plicatus (Lightfoot, 1786), T. acanthodes Watson, 1883, T. varians (d'Orbigny, 1841), and T. geversianus (Pallas, 1774).

The revision of the French Polynesian Muricidae is addended and a new species, Morula cernohorskyi, is described from the Tuamotu and Society Archipelagos.

Pterynotus laurae n. sp. is described. The species is currently restricted to the Sulu Sea in the Philippine Islands. It is compared with P. albobrunneus Bertsch & D'Attilio, 1980 from the Indian Ocean. Two other species, P. pinnatus (Swainson, 1822) and P. pellucidus (Reeve, 1845) are illustrated for further comparison.

Sixteen species of Muricidae were collected during the French-Indonesian KARUBAR cruise. Most of them are new records for the region. Leptotrophon kastoroaesp.nov. is decribed and compared to three similar species from New Caledonia.

Drupa denticulata n. sp. is described. The species is restricted to Northeast Madagascar and to Réunion, and is compared with Drupa morum morum (Röding, 1798) from the Indo-West Pacific and Drupa morum iodostoma (Lesson, 1840), a subspecies endemic to the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia).

Morula martensi Dall, 1923 differs from the similar species Ergalatax margariticola (Broderip, 1833) by having a smaller, narrower and white shell. The species erroneously identified as Ergalatax or Cronia martensi (Dall, 1923) in recent literature is named here as Ergalatax obscura n.sp.

This report deals with the species of Muricidae collected during the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition on Ambon. At 44 stations, a total of 58 species in 23 genera of the prosobranch gastropod family Muricidae were obtained. The identity and the classification of several nominal taxa is revised. Four species are new to science and are described here: Pygmaepterys cracentis spec. nov. (Muricopsinae), Pascula ambonensis spec. nov. (Ergalataxinae), Thais hadrolineae spec. nov. and Morula rumphiusi spec. nov. (Rapaninae). Some comments are included on the Muricidae described by Rumphius and on their identification. In his "Amboinsche Rariteitkamer" (1705) 21 species of muricids were included, of which 16 were illustrated by Rumphius or Schijnvoet. The identity of those species is determined. During the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition seven of these species have been refound.

Sixty-six species of Muricidae from West Africa are revised, with most of the types examined and illustrated. Forty-five species are endemic to West Africa, nine species also live in the Mediterranean, eight species are amphiatlantic, one species occurs mainly in the northeastern Atlantic, three species are endemic to the Island of Saint Helena.

Five new species of Muricidae are described. Poirieria (Actinotrophon) fragilis from the New Caledonia region and Western Australia, Dermomurex (Takia) gofasi from the Northeast Atlantic, Attiliosa nithae from the Philippine Islands, Ocenebra (Ocenebra) chavesi from the Azores, and Pterotyphis ryalli from Ghana. Poirieria (Actmotrophon) actinophorus (Dall, 1889) is reported for the first time from the Northeast Atlantic.

Murexiella andamanensis n. sp. is described. It is compared with Murexiella interserratus (Sowerby, 1879) and ?Muricopsis (?Murexsul) multispinosus (Sowerby, 1904).

New Caledonian representatives of the muricid subfamily Trophoninae are revised. Two new genera are described and a total of 32 species are recorded, of which 24 are new to science. One species is refered to Apixystus Iredale, 1929, four to Trophonopsis Bucquoy & Dautzenberg, 1882, twenty-two to Leptotrophon n. gen., four to Conchatalos n. gen., and one to Litozamia Iredale, 1929. Two species formerly described in Poirieria (Paziella) (Muricinae) are transfered to Trophoninae. Three species are also known from SE and E Australia, and/or from Indonesia. The others are known only from the New Caledonian region. Most species live between 250 and 775 meters; only one species occurs in 105-110 m and three range deeper than 1000 m.

Two new genera of Muricidae are named: Pterymarchia n. gen. and Vaughtia n. gen. They include species formerly classified in Pterynotus Swainson, 1833 (Muricinae), Ocenebra Gray, 1847, and Urosalpinx Stimpson, 1865 (Ocenebrinae). Following new synonyms are listed: Tritonalia semidisjuncta Turton, 1932 and T. aedicularum = Vaughtia babingtoni (Sowerby, 1892); Ocenebra hayesi Lorenz, 1995 = V. jucunda (Thiele, 1925); Ocenebra newmanni Lorenz, 1990 = V. dunkeri (Krauss, 1848); Cominella fuscopicta Turton, 1932 = V. fenestrata (Gould, 1860); Purpura cribrosa Krauss, 1859 = V. scrobiculata (Dunker, 1846).

Chicoreus (Triplex) dodongi n. sp. is named from Samar, in the Philippine Islands. It is compared with C. (T.) strigatus (Reeve, 1849), C. (T.) akritos Radwin & D'Attilio, 1976, and with young specimens of C. (T.) torrefactus (Sowerby, 1841) and C. (T.) saulii (Sowerby, 1834) .
