In the scope of energy management systems (EMSs) for microgrids, the forecasting module stands out as an essential element, significantly influencing the efficacy of optimal solution policies. Forecasts for consumption, generation, and market prices play a crucial role in both day-ahead and real-time decision-making processes within EMSs. This paper aims to develop a machine learning-based multivariate forecasting methodology to account for the intricate interplay pertaining to these variables from the perspective of day-ahead energy management. Specifically, our approach delves into the dynamic relationship between load demand variations and electricity price fluctuations within the microgrid EMSs. The investigation involves a comparative analysis and evaluation of recurrent neural networks' performance to recognize the most effective technique for the forecasting module of microgrid EMSs. This study includes approaches based on Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks (LSTMs), with architectures ranging from Vanilla LSTM, Stacked LSTM, Bi-directional LSTM, and Convolution LSTM to attention-based models. The empirical study involves analyzing real-world time-series data sourced from the Australian Energy Market (AEM), specifically focusing on historical data from the NSW state. The findings indicate that while the Triple-Stacked LSTM demonstrates superior performance for this application, it does not necessarily lead to more optimal operational costs, with forecast inaccuracies potentially causing deviations of up to forty percent from the optimal cost. Transmission lines, the core part of the transmission and distribution system in the smart grid, require effective, efficient, and reliable protective measures against faults to avoid severe damage to physical infrastructure and financial losses. Due to their growing popularity, machine learning models are used in fault detection and classification, whose performances can be severely affected by cyber‐attacks due to their data dependency, posing a critical concern. Hence, this paper introduces false data injection attacks to address the vulnerability of machine learning‐based fault detectors and classifiers. A comparative study of 9 detection models and 6 classification models under normal conditions and during a combination of two models of false data injection attacks is presented to evaluate the severity of cyber‐attacks. Experimental results show that highly accurate models in normal conditions are more susceptible to cyber‐attacks, with up to 69% and 28% degradations in accuracy for fault detectors and classifiers, respectively. Furthermore, the detection models are found to be more vulnerable to cyber‐attacks than the classification models. With no robust detectors and classifiers being found, this work addresses the importance of developing attack‐resilient fault detection and classification schemes considering their academic and industrial significance. The speed of an induction machine drive (IMD) in the electrified powertrain of an electric vehicle (EV) suffers from thermal degradation caused by EV loading, driving cycle schedules, EV operating conditions, traffic state and temperature. It is necessary to estimate this thermal degradation in order to design appropriate control methodologies to address this significant issue that directly affects the EV performance. This study proposes a robust linear parameter varying (LPV) observer to estimate this degradation in IMD as well as EV speed under various thermal and loading conditions in steady state and during large transients. The stability and robustness of LPV methodology is ensured by optimal gains of H∞ ${\mathrm{H}}_{\infty }$ control and linear matrix inequalities using convex optimisation techniques. The weighting functions in LPV design are optimised by genetic algorithms. The proposed observer performance is compared with that of conventional sensorless field‐oriented control and sliding mode observer. An improved speed performance during EV operation is also presented to validate the robustness of the proposed LPV observer against New European Driving Cycle.
