Abstract

After a rapid multiphase evolution and a transition from passive to active rifting during late Early Miocene to Pliocene times, the Pannonian Basin has been subjected to compressional stresses leading to gradual basin inversion during Quaternary times. Stress modelling demonstrates the significance of the interaction of external plate-boundary forces and the effect of gravitational stresses caused by continental topography and crustal thickness variation. Flexural modelling and fission-track studies have elucidated the complex interplay of flexural downloading during collision, followed by rapid unroofing by unflexing and isostatic rebound of the lithosphere. The stretching and subsidence history of the Pannonian Basin, the temporal and spatial evolution of the flexure of the Carpathian lithosphere, and the lithospheric strength of the region reflect a complex history of this segment of the Eurasia-Africa collision zone. The polyphase evolution of the Pannonian-Carpathian system has resulted in strong lateral and temporal variation in thermomechanical properties in the area. Modelling results suggest that, as a whole, the Pannonian Basin has been an area of pronounced lithospheric weakness since Cretaceous time, shedding light on the high degree of strain localization in this region. This basin, the hottest in continental Europe, has a lithosphere of extremely low rigidity, making it prone to multiple tectonic reactivations. Another feature is the noticeable absence of lithospheric strength in the mantle lithosphere of the Pannonian Basin. Modelling studies suggest pronounced lateral variations in lithospheric strength along the Carpathians and their foreland, which have influenced the thrust load kinematics and post-collisional tectonic history. The inferences and models discussed in this paper are constrained by a large geophysical database, including seismic profiles, gravity and heat-flow data. © The Geological Society of London 2006.

Abstract

Continental topography is at the interface of processes taking place at depth in the Earth, at its surface, and above it. Topography influences society, not only in terms of slow processes of landscape change and earthquakes, but also in terms of how it affects climate. The Pannonian Basin-Carpathian Orogen System in Central and Eastern Europe represents a key natural laboratory for the development of a new generation of models for ongoing orogeny and its effect on continental topography development (Figure l). This system comprises some of the best documented sedimentary basins in the world, located within the Alpine orogenic belt, at the transition between the western European lithosphere and the East European Craton. It includes one of the most active seismic zones in Europe, with intermediate depth (50–220 km) mantle earthquakes of significant magnitude occurring in a geographically restricted area in theVrancea zone of southeastern Romania.

Abstract

Kcv (K+ Chlorella virus) is a miniature virus-encoded K+ channel. Its predicted membrane–pore–membrane structure lacks a cytoplasmic C-terminus and it has a short 12 amino acid (aa) cytoplasmic N-terminus. Kcv forms a functional channel when expressed in human HEK 293 cells. Deletion of the 14 N-terminal aa results in no apparent differences in the subcellular location and expression level of the Kcv protein. However, the truncated protein does not induce a measurable current in transfected HEK 293 cells or Xenopus oocytes. We conclude that the N-terminus controls functional properties of the Kcv channel, but does not influence protein expression.

Abstract

TOPO-EUROPE addresses the 4-D topographic evolution of the orogens and intra-plate regions of Europe through a multidisciplinary approach linking geology, geophysics, geodesy and geotechnology. TOPO-EUROPE integrates monitoring, imaging, reconstruction and modelling of the interplay between processes controlling continental topography and related natural hazards. Until now, research on neotectonics and related topography development of orogens and intra-plate regions has received little attention. TOPO-EUROPE initiates a number of novel studies on the quantification of rates of vertical motions, related tectonically controlled river evolution and land subsidence in carefully selected natural laboratories in Europe. From orogen through platform to continental margin, these natural laboratories include the Alps/Carpathians–Pannonian Basin System, the West and Central European Platform, the Apennines–Aegean–Anatolian region, the Iberian Peninsula, the Scandinavian Continental Margin, the East-European Platform, and the Caucasus–Levant area. TOPO-EUROPE integrates European research facilities and know-how essential to advance the understanding of the role of topography in Environmental Earth System Dynamics. The principal objective of the network is twofold. Namely, to integrate national research programs into a common European network and, furthermore, to integrate activities among TOPO-EUROPE institutes and participants. Key objectives are to provide an interdisciplinary forum to share knowledge and information in the field of the neotectonic and topographic evolution of Europe, to promote and encourage multidisciplinary research on a truly European scale, to increase mobility of scientists and to train young scientists. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of continental topography research, and of the challenges to TOPO-EUROPE researchers in the targeted natural laboratories

Abstract

Nodular thyroid pathology weighs heavily for 4-5% of the general population, being the most common among the endocrinopathies. Because of this these diagnostic methods have gained more and more importance as FNA able to select already in the pre-operation phase the malignant nodules from the benign ones and to decide on the most suitable surgical intervention. In the period of time between January 1989 and June 1992 in the Institute of the III Surgical Clinic in Rome there have been performed 403 FNA. From the whole total we have extrapolated 221 patients. In this study we stressed how the FNA method has a sensibility of 80%, a specificity of 93% and afterwards an accurate diagnosis of 92%. Besides we have verified that sonography and radionuclide scanning have a truth worthiness respectively of 64% and 52%. The FNA in our opinion allows us to have in the pre-operation phase a much more accurate diagnosis as regards that obtained with only sonography and radionuclide scanning therefore the latter methods must be considered complementary to FNA.

Abstract

Benign formations in the liver constitute a heterogeneous group of pathology lesions that are rarely found clinically. In the period between January 1985 and June 1992, 81 patients, affected by benign formations of the liver, were observed at the Institute of the III Surgical Clinic of Rome "La Sapienza". Most of these lesions are asymptomatic and their diagnosis is mostly casual. Among these we found 48 cases of echinococcus cystis, 13 cases of congenital cystic formations, 2 amoebiasis cases, and 1 case the ecografic exam, which shows an hepatic formation to the fifth segment, was not in conformity with the cytologic exam which proved negative because of cellular abnormalities of any nature, therefore it's constituted by normal parenchyma. Consequently the patient was discharged. We operated on 65 patients. The complications found in the patient operated on were not important and we had the death of only 1 patient affected by hepatic abscess on the 3rd day after surgery because of septicemia and cardio-circulatory problems. The follow-up made after a certain time has resulted negative because of relapses if we exclude 1 case of echinococcus cystis wherein we found a serological relapsing. In our experience and according to most of the authors, the operation must take place always in cases such as: adenoma, cystoadenoma, hemangiomas having a diameter higher than 3 cm, echinococcus cysts, syntomatic formations and when we have complications. For all other cases we must limit ourselves to observation over a certain period both the dimensions and morphological modification of the lesions.

47. Role of topography-induced gravitational stresses in basin inversion: the case study of the Pannonian basin

Abstract

Numerical stress models suggest that gravitational body forces associated with elevated topography around sedimentary basins can significantly influence the stress and strain pattern in basin interiors. In the absence of tectonic forces, basins surrounded by high-altitude mountain ranges experience net horizontal compression. Owing to gravitational forces pointing from areas of high gravitational potential energy to subsided basin areas, further lithospheric extension can eventually terminate, leading to a gradual late stage inversion of the entire basin system. Modeling results suggest that the state of recent stress in the Pannonian basin, particularly in its western part, is controlled by the interplay of plate boundary forces, i.e., the counterclockwise rotation and northward indentation of the Adriatic microplate against the Alpine-Dinaric belt, and buoyancy forces associated with the elevated topography and related crustal thickness variation of the Alpine-Dinaric belt. Model calculations show that uplifted regions surrounding the basin system can exert compression on the thinned Pannonian lithosphere of ~ 40-60 MPa that is of the order of the assumed far-field tectonic stress magnitudes. The combined analysis of stress sources of tectonic and gravitational origin helps estimating the magnitude of maximum horizontal compression. High levels of compressional stresses (up to >100 MPa) are concentrated in the elastic core of the lithosphere, consistent with the ongoing structural inversion of the Pannonian basin system.
