8th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion; 1469-1472, Solar water pumping combines solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, hydraulic engineering, and high-efficiency technology to provide water management techniques and optimise irrigated farming. Within the context of the SolaQua project, a solar photovoltaic system design for water pumping was developed and implemented in Montes Velhos Pumping Station, located in Aljustrel, Portugal. This pumping station has 2.813 MW of total installed pumping power and a maximum flow rate of 3.08 m3 /s. The designed PV system has 320 kWp installed on 1-axis North-South horizontal sun-trackers in a hybridised configuration with the electricity grid. This work aims to analyse the real operation data from that hydro-agricultural system from 2019 to May 2022. It is intended to analyse data regarding the electrical conversion efficiency of the pumping station, to calculate the annual performance ratio (PR) and other equally relevant variables for the pumping station and solar photovoltaic plants, such as self-consumption rates and annual savings. The designed system allowed the cost reduction of the pressurised pumped water and increased the share of renewable energy (RE), presenting a cost-effective alternative to the previous energy sources, diesel generators or electric grid for water pumping.

One year after the first case reported by a new coronavirus (COVID-19), the evidence has shown a series of persistent signs and symptoms once the acute process has been overcome. Under the WHO’s framework for health and disability, these impairments at cardiorespiratory, cognitive, and musculoskeletal body functions and structures lead, at least in the short and mid-term, to activity limitations and participation restriction. In this review, we discussed the main alterations generating disability and the challenges of implementing effective evaluation strategies in this disease. Along with their role in the health emergency, rehabilitation teams are challenged to design and deliver timely intervention strategies to reduce post-COVID-19 disability.

EGU2020: Sharing Geoscience Online, 4-8 May, 2020, EPOS (European Plate Observing System) is an ESFRI Landmark and European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). The EPOS Thematic Core Service Multi-scale laboratories (TCS MSL) represents a community of European solid Earth sciences laboratories including high temperature and pressure experimental facilities, electron microscopy, micro-beam analysis, analogue tectonic and geodynamic modelling, paleomagnetism, and analytical laboratories. Participants and collaborating laboratories from Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the UK are already organized in the TCS MSL. Unaffiliated European solid Earth sciences laboratories are welcome and encouraged to join the growing TCS MSL community. Members of the TCS MSL are also represented in the EPOS Sustainability Phase (SP). Laboratory facilities are an integral part of Earth science research. The diversity of methods employed in such infrastructures reflects the multi-scale nature of the Earth system and is essential for the understanding of its evolution, for the assessment of geo-hazards, and for the sustainable exploitation of geo-resources. Although experimental data from these laboratories often provide the backbone for scientific publications, they are often only available as supplementary information to research articles. As a result, much of the collected data remains unpublished, inaccessible, and often not preserved for the long term. The TCS MSL is committed to make Earth science laboratory data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). For this purpose the TCS MSL has developed an online portal that brings together DOI-referenced data publications from research data repositories related to the TCS MSL context (https://epos-msl.uu.nl/). In addition, the TCS MSL has developed a Trans-national access (TNA) program that allows researchers and research teams to apply for physical or remote access to the participating EPOS MSL laboratories. Three pilot calls were launched in 2017, 2018, and 2019, with a fourth call scheduled for 2020. The pilot calls were used to develop and refine the EPOS wide TNA principles and to initialize an EPOS brokering service, where information on each facility offering access will be available for the user and where calls for proposals are advertised. Access to the participating laboratories is currently supported by national funding or in-kind contribution. Based on the EPOS Data policy & TNA General Principles, access to the laboratories is regulated by common rules and a transparent policy, including procedures and mechanisms for application, negotiation, proposal evaluation, user feedback, use of laboratory facilities and data curation. Access to EPOS Multi-scale laboratories is a unique opportunity to create new synergy, collaboration and innovation, in a framework of trans-national access rules.

The genetic structure of populations of the tick Amblyomma ovale from five distinct areas of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest was evaluated via DNA sequencing and associated with the presence of domestic dogs acting as hosts at the edge of forest fragments. Ticks were collected from domestic dogs and from the environment between 2015 and 2017. Four collection areas were located in the surroundings and within the Serra do Mar State Park, SAo Paulo State (23 degrees 3721"S, 45 degrees 2443"W), where dogs were bimonthly monitored along 2 years using camera traps and GSM trackers. To determine the spatial limits of genetic structure, ticks collected upon dogs living near the Serra do Baturie, Ceara State (4 degrees 1540"S, 38 degrees 5554"W) were included as well. A total of 39 haplotypes of 16S rRNA and Cox 1 mitochondrial genes sequences were observed, with 27 of them coming from areas within the Serra do Mar State Park. No haplotype was shared between the Serra do Mar and the Serra do Baturie indicating isolation of tick populations at the scale of 2000km. Although three different haplotype lineages of A. ovale occurred within the Serra do Mar State Park, no genetic structure was found across the study sites within this park, suggesting high tick gene flow across a range of 45km. Monitoring data from domestic dogs and wild carnivores showed that these species share the same habitats at the forest edge, with dogs playing a likely limited role in tick dispersal. Our findings have important implications for understanding the genetic structure of wide spread A. ovale along Brazilian rainforest remnants, which can further be associated to tick-borne infectious agents, such as Rickettsia parkeri, and used for predicting future patterns of tick diversity in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest.

La indicación médica de caminar más se ha demostrado poco eficaz y, en nuestro medio, se desconoce el beneficio del uso de los contadores de pasos en la EPOC. Objetivo: Determinar el efecto de los contadores de pasos para incentivar la actividadfísica en la EPOC. Método: 55 Pacientes con EPOC fueron incorporados a un programa de tres meses destinado a aumentar su actividad física y fueron asignados aleatoriamente a dos grupos: en uno el paciente autocontroló su actividad con un contador de pasos (grupo experimental) y en el otro se siguió el manejo habitual (grupo control). Al comienzo y al final del estudio se realizaron las siguientes mediciones: promedio de pasos caminados por día medidos en una semana, espirometría, caminata de seis minutos (C6M), disnea con escala de la Medical Research Council Modificada (mMRC) y calidad de vida mediante cuestionario de Saint George (SGRQ) y COPD Assessment Test (CAT). Resultados: 69% de los pacientes eran hombres, edad promedio 68 años, VEF1ICVF = 55%, VEF(1)63%predicho. El grupo experimental (n = 29) y el control (n = 26) presentaron características basales comparables. El grupo experimental presentó una diferencia significativa en el incremento de los pasos por día en comparación con el grupo control (mediana de 2073,5 versus -68, p < 0,001). También hubo diferencia en la reducción del componente síntomas del SGRQ (promedio de -9,65 versus 0,05 puntos, grupo experimental versus control, p = 0,048). Conclusión: Un programa de incentivo de la actividad física apoyado con contadores de pasos es útil para incentivar la actividad física en la EPOC.

Humans are genuinely social beings. For the majority of our time, we dwell in social situations or think about self in relation to others. Our social thoughts and actions are directed towards understanding and responding to the thoughts and actions of others. Examples of prosocial interactions in everyday life include experiencing others’ emotional distress, volunteering time to help others, offering comfort towards others in physical pain, reciprocating favors, cooperating and sharing goods, or making charitable donations.

Introduction: The level of daily physical activity is reduced in COPD and has a negative effect on the morbidity and mortality of this condition. Usual advice is not sufficient to reverse the sedentary condition. Pedometers are widely used but their effects in COPD have not been tested in our country. Aim: To determine the effect of pedometers on physical activity in COPD patients. Method: 55 COPD patients were recruited for a 3 months individual program promoting daily physical activity enhancement and were randomly assigned either to a pedometer-based program (experimental group) or to usual care (control group). At the beginning and at the end of the intervention period we measured the average daily steps over one week, exercise capacity using the six-minute walking test (6MWT), the MMRC dyspnoea score, the Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and the COPD assessment Test (CAT) to estimate quality of life. Results: 69% of the subjects were male, mean age 68 years, mean FEV1IFVC 55%, mean FEV(1)63% of predicted value. Experimental (n = 29) and control group (n = 26) had comparable baseline characteristics. There was a significant difference in the increase of steps/day in the experimental group in comparison with the control group (median value = 2073.5 versus -68, p < 0.001). Also, a significant difference was observed in the symptoms subscale score of the SGRQ (reduction of 9.65 versus 0.05points, experimental versus control group, p = 0.048). Conclusions: Pedometers are a useful tool to increase physical activity level in COPD.

La educación es considerada un componente central de la rehabilitación pulmonar. En vez de entregar educación orientada a la mera entrega de conocimientos la tendencia actual es propiciar la autoeficacia del paciente dando especial énfasis a la enseñanza de las habilidades del autocuidado (calidad de la evidencia B, fuerza de la recomendación moderada). Los principales componentes de la educación en el autocuidado son: el reconocimiento y tratamiento precoz de las exacerbaciones agudas mediante el uso de su propio "plan de acción", las técnicas de respiración y de drenaje bronquial y la enseñanza orientada a fortalecer la adherencia a los programas de ejercicio en el hogar. Aún faltan estudios que demuestren cuales son los mecanismos más efectivos para lograr que la educación en el autocuidado tenga efectos perdurables en el tiempo. Education is considered a core component of pulmonary rehabilitation. Rather than to simply provide didactic education, the recommendation now is to promote self-efficacy through teaching self-management skills (quality evidence B, moderate recommendation). The main components of self-management education are the use of action plan for early treatment of exacerbations, breathing strategies and bronchial hygiene techniques and the adherence to exercise at home. There still need of evidence about which mechanisms of self-management education have the most perdurable effects.

Tese dout., Biologia, Universidade do Algarve, 2006 Phytophthora cinnamomi, oomiceta parasita das raízes de Quercus suber, excreta abundantemente cinamominas, proteínas da família das elicitinas. Foi demonstrada a interacção destas proteínas com vários tipos de moléculas lipídicas mas desconhece-se o seu papel biológico. Neste trabalho foi induzido o silenciamento do gene codificante para a β-cinamomina, após transformação genética de protoplastos por meios químicos (lipossomas e CaCl2/PEG) com uma sequência anti-sentido do gene βcin. A selecção dos transformantes foi realizada através da co-transformação com um gene que conferiu resistência à higromicina B. A presença dos transgenes foi certificada por PCR. A ausência da proteína em meios de cultura foi confirmada através de western blotting, aplicando anticorpos monoclonais anti-b- cinamomina, e a ausência do respectivo RNAm foi comprovada com quantificação por RTPCR em tempo real, observando-se também uma diminuição na expressão de genes codificantes para outras elicitinas. Testes de patogenicidade realizados em Q. suber com o único co-transformante estável obtido (resistente ao antibiótico e com gene βcin silenciado), com um transformante simples (resistente ao antibiótico) e com os respectivos isolamentos selvagens revelaram uma diminuição de patogenicidade na estirpe com o gene βcin silenciado, que não pode ser atribuída à simples presença do gene de resistência. Perfis de expressão genética obtidos por cDNA-AFLP revelaram diferenças marcantes entre co-transformante e isolamento selvagem e a sequenciação de alguns fragmentos diferencialmente transcritos revelou que estes estão potencialmente associados à expressão do gene cinβ, destacando-se entre eles um gene associado ao metabolismo de ácidos gordos. RESUMO Todos sabemos que as crianças não são meramente pequenos adultos. Em comparação com aqueles, estas apresentam uma relação superfície cutânea/ peso corporal aumentada que contribui, por um lado, para aumentar a susceptibilidade à irritação, por outro, para maximizar a absorção percutânea com consequente aumento do risco de toxicidade sistémica. Tendo em atenção os aspectos particulares da pele da criança, os autores fazem uma revisão das principais terapêuticas tópicas usadas em Dermatologia Pediátrica, nomeadamente corticosteróides, anti-infecciosos, imunossupressores, emolientes, esfoliantes, cremes barreira, adstringentes, antissépticos, anti-histaminicos, antiacneicos, antipsoriáticos, anestésicos e protectores solares. ABSTRACT We all know that children are not just small adults. Children have a bigger cutaneous surface / corporal weight relation. This contributs, on one hand, to increase the irritation susceptibility, and on the other to maximize transcutaneous absortion, leading to a greater risk of systemic toxicity. Considering the particular characteristics of children’s skin, the authors review the main topical treatments used in Pediatric Dermatology, namely corticosteroids, antimicrobials, imunossupressors, emollients, exfoliants, protective creams, adstringents, antiseptics, antipruritics, antiacneics, antipsoriatics, anesthetics, sun protectors.
