- Abstract
A photograph of an oil painting, painted by artists Andrew Blair (a landscape painter of Dunfermline) and William Geddes (a portrait painter of Blairgowrie) between 1881 and 1882. This painting hangs in the foyer of the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum, Dunfermline. The painting depicts the celebration of Andrew Carnegie's return to Dunfermline on July 27th, 1881 to lay the memorial stone of the first Carnegie Free Library. Andrew Carnegie is seen at the front of the first carriage to the right of the painting, raising his hat to the crowd that is gathered on High Street. His mother is seen beside the carriage conversing with a man and woman. The foreground middle and background features pedestrians along the street and the middle and background of the painting features buildings on both sides of the street. An American flag, Union Jack and Lion Rampant are seen hanging from the third floor of a building on the right side of the painting. There is a decorative frame surrounding the painting.
