With the increasing concern about global warming, many technologies have been developed to help mitigate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the atmosphere. The primary motivation for this research has been to investigate the mitigation technology of sequestering the CO2 in deep geological formations, particularly saline aquifers. The displacement of water by CO2    is critically dependent on the physical property known as relative permeability.  By measuring the relative permeability of CO2 gas and water in an experimental apparatus, we were able to determine that the phenomena of CO2 solution and dissolution have very significant effect on the displacement of CO2 gas into water.

The scientific and engineering challenges of research on porous media have gained substantial attention in recent decades. These intricate issues span different disciplines and fields, manifesting in natural and industrial systems like soils, oil and gas reservoirs, tissues, plants, etc. Meanwhile, digital core analysis technology has rapidly developed, proving invaluable not just in oil and gas reservoirs development, but also in geothermal energy, carbon and hydrogen storage. The China InterPore Chapter and the Research Center of Multiphase Flow in Porous Media at China University of Petroleum (East China) have established a conference platform for global scholars to exchange ideas and research in porous media utilizing digital core analysis technology. The 6th International Conference on Digital Core Analysis & the 2023 China Interpore Conference on Porous Media was successfully held in Qingdao from July 5 to 7, 2023. The conference facilitated discussions among 150 participants, including over 20 invited experts from academia and industry, and the recent advances in research of fluid flow in porous media using digital core analysis technology were thoroughly presented. Subsurface environments host diverse microorganisms in fluid-filled fractures; however, little is known about how geological and hydrological processes shape the subterranean biosphere. Here, we sampled three flowing boreholes weekly for 10 mo in a 1478-m-deep fractured rock aquifer to study the role of fracture activity (defined as seismically or aseismically induced fracture aperture change) and advection on fluid-associated microbial community composition. We found that despite a largely stable deep-subsurface fluid microbiome, drastic community-level shifts occurred after events signifying physical changes in the permeable fracture network. The community-level shifts include the emergence of microbial families from undetected to over 50% relative abundance, as well as the replacement of the community in one borehole by the earlier community from a different borehole. Null-model analysis indicates that the observed spatial and temporal community turnover was primarily driven by stochastic processes (as opposed to deterministic processes). We, therefore, conclude that the observed community-level shifts resulted from the physical transport of distinct microbial communities from other fracture(s) that outpaced environmental selection. Given that geological activity is a major cause of fracture activity and that geological activity is ubiquitous across space and time on Earth, our findings suggest that advection induced by geological activity is a general mechanism shaping the microbial biogeography and diversity in deep-subsurface habitats across the globe.
