Titanium alloys gain increasing importance in industry due to the expansion of advanced manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing. Conventional titanium alloys processed by such technologies suffer from formation of large primary grains and anisotropy of mechanical properties. Therefore, novel alloys are required. Herein, the effect of ternary alloying elements Fe and Cr on the Ti–6.4(wt%)Ni eutectoid system is investigated. Both elements act as eutectoid formers. Fe and Cr show sluggish transformation behavior, whereas Ni is an active eutectoid-forming element. Thereby, sluggish refers to slow and active to fast transformation kinetics. The focus of this work is on the combined addition of such elements studied under different heat-treatment conditions. It is shown in the results that largely varying microstructures can be generated resulting in hardness values ranging from 239 to 556 HV₀.₁. Moreover, the formation of a substructure within the α phase of direct aged alloys is observed. The formation mechanism of this substructure is investigated in detail. The mechanical properties are discussed based on the microstructural characteristics. The presence of intermetallic Ti₂Ni phase increases the Young's modulus, whereas the presence of ω phase results in embrittlement. The results shed light upon the complex phase formation and decomposition behavior of titanium alloys based on Ti–6.4Ni.

In this study, several biodegradable Mg alloys (Mg5Zn, Mg5Zn0.3Ca, Mg5Zn0.15Ca, and Mg5Zn0.15Ca0.15Zr, numbers in wt%) were investigated after thermomechanical processing via high-pressure torsion (HPT) at elevated temperature as well as after additional heat treatments. Indirect and direct analyses of microstructure revealed that the significant strength increases arise not only from dislocations and precipitates but also from vacancy agglomerates. By contrast with former low-temperature processing routes applied by the authors, a significant ductility was obtained because of temperature-induced dynamic recovery. The low initial values of Young's modulus were not significantly affected by warm HPT-processing. nor by heat treatments afterwards. Also, corrosion resistance did not change or even increase during those treatments. Altogether, the study reveals a viable processing route for the optimization of Mg alloys to provide enhanced mechanical properties while leaving the corrosion properties unaffected, suggesting it for the use as biodegradable implant material.

Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt verschiedene Aspekte des mechanischen Verhaltens nanostrukturierter Materialien, die mittels Hochdruck-Torsion (HPT) hergestellt wurden. Außerdem werden unterschiedliche experimentelle Aufbauten vorgestellt, die zur Messung mechanischer Eigenschaften von Proben mit kleinen Dimensionen entwickelt wurden. Zugversuche an HPT Cu und Cu-Al-Legierungen und deren Analyse mithilfe der Taylor-Gleichung zeigen, dass die Festigkeit dieser Materialien in erster Linie der hohen Versetzungsdichte zuzuschreiben ist und nicht allein der limitierten Korngröße. Die Versetzungen befinden sich außerdem in einer spannungsarmen Anordnung, welche sich ihrerseits positiv auf die Duktilität auswirkt. Durch Vergleich mit Literaturdaten wird gezeigt, dass die Versetzungsanordnung, die hauptsächlich durch die Prozessparameter bestimmt wird, einen größeren Einfluss auf die Duktilität hat als andere Materialparameter wie die Stapelfehlerenergie oder die Dichte der Zwillingskorngrenzen. Weitere Experimente untersuchen das Wechselverformungsverhalten sowie das Ermüdungsrisswachstum in HPT Cu unterschiedlicher Reinheit bzw. thermischer Stabilität. Diese dynamischen mechanischen Eigenschaften werden außerdem an hochreinem HPT Cu mit einer bimodalen Korngrößenverteilung studiert. Die nanostrukturierten HPT Materialien zeigen durchwegs eine gegenüber dem unprozessierten grobkörnigen Zustand verbesserte zyklische Dauerfestigkeit. Allerdings wird diese in hochreinem HPT Cu durch eine bei hoher Lastwechselzahl auftretende Kornvergröberung stark beeinträchtigt. Andererseits ist das Ermüdungsrisswachstum in nanostrukturiertem HPT Cu erhöht, auch der Schwellwert des Spannungsintensitätsfaktors ist kleiner im Vergleich zu grobkörnigem Cu. Im Bereich sehr niedriger Risswachstumsraten kommt es auch hier zu einer Kornvergröberung im Bereich um die Rissspitze. Diese führt zu einer Verlangsamung des Risswachstums und tritt unabhängig von der Reinheit auf. Allerdings scheint ein bestimmtes Ausmaß an gespeicherter Energie, die mit einer bestimmten Dichte an Verformungsdefekten verbunden ist, Voraussetzung für dieses Verhalten zu sein., This thesis deals with different aspects concerning the mechanical behaviour of nanostructured materials processed by High-Pressure Torsion (HPT). Furthermore, different experimental set-ups which have been developed to measure mechanical properties of small-scaled samples are presented. Tensile tests of HPT Cu and Cu-Al alloys and their analysis using the Taylor equation reveal that the strength of these materials is to be ascribed mainly to the high dislocation density, and not only to the limited grain size. Moreover, the dislocations are in a low-stress arrangement. It is shown that such an arrangement is beneficial for the ductility. A comparison with literature data reveals that the dislocation arrangement, which is mainly determined by the processing parameters, has more influence on the ductility than the stacking fault energy or the twin density of the material. Further experiments investigate cyclic deformation behaviour in the high cycle fatigue regime as well as crack growth in HPT Cu of different purity and thermal stability. These dynamic mechanical properties are also studied in a high purity HPT Cu with bimodal grain size distribution. Nanostructured HPT Cu generally shows an enhanced fatigue strength compared to its coarse grained counterpart. However, in case of high purity HPT processed material, grain coarsening at high number of loading cycles occurs which markedly deteriorates the fatigue strength. As concerns the fatigue crack growth rate, that of HPT Cu is increased compared to the coarse grained material. Also the threshold stress intensity factor range is lower. At low crack propagation rates, grain coarsening also occurs during crack growth near the crack tip. This phenomenon leads to a retardation of fatigue crack growth and takes place irrespective of the purity of the HPT material. However, a certain level of stored energy being connected to a certain density of deformation-induced defects seems to be a condition for this behaviour.

Im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit ist es gelungen, Lebensdauerkurven (S/N-Kurven) von hochdruck-tordiertem, ultafeinkörnigem Kupfer (HPT-Cu) aufzunehmen. Durch Einsatz eines Ultraschallresonanzsystems zur Wechselbelastung mit einer Frequenz von 20 kHz war es möglich, bis zu sehr hohen Zyklenzahlen (10 hoch 9) zu messen. Neben hochreinem und kommerziell reinem, HPT-Cu wurde bei gleicher Geometrie auch hochreines, geglühtes sowie kommerziell reines, ECAP-verformtes Kupfer untersucht. Zusätzlich zu den Lebensdauermessungen wurde die ermüdete Mikrostruktur sowie der Rissverlauf untersucht.
