1. Variants of the slacks-based measure with assurance region and zeros in input-output data

Abstract

Incorporating an assurance region (AR) into the slacks-based measure (SBM) improves practicality; however, its efficiency measure may not have desirable properties, such as monotonicity. We incorporate a closer target setting approach into the SBM with AR and a variant of the SBM with AR. We demonstrate that the efficiency measure with the hybrid approach has the same desirable properties as that without AR, and we also show that the efficiency scores can be computed by solving linear programming problems. Our proposed approach can handle zeros in the observed input-output data without any data transformation or additional model modification.

3. A method for multi-leader-multi-follower games by smoothing the followers' response function

Abstract

The multi-leader--multi-follower game (MLMFG) involves two or more leaders and followers and serves as a generalization of the Stackelberg game and the single-leader--multi-follower game (SLMFG). Although MLMFG covers wide range of real-world applications, its research is still sparse. Notably, fundamental solution methods for this class of problems remain insufficiently established. A prevailing approach is to recast the MLMFG as an equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints (EPEC) and solve it using a solver. Meanwhile, interpreting the solution to the EPEC in the context of MLMFG may be complex due to shared decision variables among all leaders, followers' strategies that each leader can unilaterally change, but the variables are essentially controlled by followers. To address this issue, we introduce a response function of followers' noncooperative game that is a function with leaders' strategies as a variable. Employing this approach allows the MLMFG to be solved as a single-level differentiable variational inequality using a smoothing scheme for the followers' response function. We also demonstrate that the sequence of solutions to the smoothed variational inequality converges to a stationary equilibrium of the MLMFG. Finally, we illustrate the behavior of the smoothing method by numerical experiments and confirm its validity.

4. Accelerating MPI Collectives with Process-in-Process-based Multi-object Techniques

Abstract

In the exascale computing era, optimizing MPI collective performance in high-performance computing (HPC) applications is critical. Current algorithms face performance degradation due to system call overhead, page faults, or data-copy latency, affecting HPC applications' efficiency and scalability. To address these issues, we propose PiP-MColl, a Process-in-Process-based Multi-object Inter-process MPI Collective design that maximizes small message MPI collective performance at scale. PiP-MColl features efficient multiple sender and receiver collective algorithms and leverages Process-in-Process shared memory techniques to eliminate unnecessary system call, page fault overhead, and extra data copy, improving intra- and inter-node message rate and throughput. Our design also boosts performance for larger messages, resulting in comprehensive improvement for various message sizes. Experimental results show that PiP-MColl outperforms popular MPI libraries, including OpenMPI, MVAPICH2, and Intel MPI, by up to 4.6X for MPI collectives like MPI_Scatter and MPI_Allgather., Comment: Accepted by ACM HPDC 2023

Abstract

The stochastic variational inequality problem (SVIP) is an equilibrium model that includes random variables and has been widely applied in various fields such as economics and engineering. Expected residual minimization (ERM) is an established model for obtaining a reasonable solution for the SVIP, and its objective function is an expected value of a suitable merit function for the SVIP. However, the ERM is restricted to the case where the distribution is known in advance. We extend the ERM to ensure the attainment of robust solutions for the SVIP under the uncertainty distribution (the extended ERM is referred to as distributionally robust expected residual minimization (DRERM), where the worst-case distribution is derived from the set of probability measures in which the expected value and variance take the same sample mean and variance, respectively). Under suitable assumptions, we demonstrate that the DRERM can be reformulated as a deterministic convex nonlinear semidefinite programming to avoid numerical integration.

Abstract

Background: Carnitine is essential for fatty acid metabolism. Free carnitine (FCA) is excreted in the urine in the glomerulus, but is partly reabsorbed by a carnitine transporter. The mechanism underlying the decrease in serum carnitine level during pregnancy is unclear. Objective: To investigate whether low carnitine level is associated with increased renal excretion in pregnant women. Methods: We recruited 43 healthy pregnant and 25 non-pregnant women. Total carnitine (TCA) and FCA levels were measured using the enzymatic cycling method, and the acylcarnitine (ACA) level was calculated. Fractional excretion (FE) was calculated as carnitine clearance divided by creatinine clearance. Results: The mean TCA, FCA, and ACA levels were lower at 12 weeks of gestation in pregnant than non-pregnant women (P <.001); the levels decreased further at 36 weeks, reaching 39%, 36%, and 52% of those in non-pregnant women, respectively (P <.001). The FEs were 3–4-fold higher in pregnant women than non-pregnant women. Pregnant women had a lower serum FCA/TCA ratio than non-pregnant women (0.788 ± 0.098 vs 0.830 ± 0.074, respectively; P <.05), whereas the urine FCA/TCA ratio was similar between the groups. Abstract

Seizures are increasingly being recognized as the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Neuronal hyperactivity can be a consequence of neuronal damage caused by abnormal amyloid β (Aß) depositions. However, it can also be a cell-autonomous phenomenon causing AD by Aß-independent mechanisms. Various studies using animal models have shown that Ca2+ is released from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) via type 1 inositol triphosphate receptors (InsP3R1s) and ryanodine receptors (RyRs). To investigate which is the main pathophysiological mechanism in human neurons, we measured Ca2+ signaling in neural cells derived from three early-onset AD patients harboring Presenilin-1 variants (PSEN1 p.A246E, p.L286V, and p.M146L). Of these, it has been reported that PSEN1 p.A246E and p.L286V did not produce a significant amount of abnormal Aß. We found all PSEN1-mutant neurons, but not wild-type, caused abnormal Ca2+-bursts in a manner dependent on the calcium channel, Ryanodine Receptor 2 (RyR2). Indeed, carvedilol, an RyR2 inhibitor, and VK-II-86, an analog of carvedilol without the β-blocking effects, sufficiently eliminated the abnormal Ca2+ bursts. In contrast, Dantrolene, an inhibitor of RyR1 and RyR3, and Xestospongin c, an IP3R inhibitor, did not attenuate the Ca2+-bursts. The Western blotting showed that RyR2 expression was not affected by PSEN1 p.A246E, suggesting that the variant may activate the RyR2. The RNA-Seq data revealed that ER-stress responsive genes were increased, and mitochondrial Ca2+-transporter genes were decreased in PSEN1A246E cells compared to the WT neurons. Thus, we propose that aberrant Ca2+ signaling is a key link between human pathogenic PSEN1 variants and cell-intrinsic hyperactivity prior to deposition of abnormal Aß, offering prospects for the development of targeted prevention strategies for at-risk individuals. Abstract

Two-stage distributionally robust stochastic noncooperative games with continuous decision variables are studied. In such games, each player solves a two-stage distributionally robust optimization problem depending on the decisions of the other players. Existing studies in this area have been limited with strict assumptions, such as linear decision rules, and supposed that each player solves a two-stage linear distributionally robust optimization with a specifically structured ambiguity set. This limitation motivated us to generalize and analyze the game in a nonlinear case. The contributions of this study are (ⅰ) demonstrating the conditions for the existence of two-stage Nash equilibria under convexity and compactness assumptions, and (ⅱ) consideration of a two-stage distributionally robust Cournot–Nash competition as an application, as well as an investigation into the conditions for the existence of market equilibria in an economic sense. We also report some results of numerical experiments to illustrate how distributional robustness affects the decision of each player in the Cournot–Nash competition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
