Bakgrunn for denne rapporten var at regjeringen ønsket å gjennomføre en risikoanalyse for norske havområder av direkte og indirekte virkninger av klimaendringer på marine økosystemer under ulike utslippsscenarier. Risikoanalysen skulle gjennomføres som en del av forvaltningsplanarbeidet for de tre forvaltningsplanområdene: Nordsjøen-Skagerrak, Norskehavet og Barentshavet-Lofoten. Oppdraget fra Miljødirektoratet til Havforskningsinstituttet bestod i én del for modellering og én del for risikoanalyse av utvalgte nøkkelarter innen plankton, fisk og skalldyr. Modelleringen inkluderer dynamisk nedskalering av tre ulike utslippsscenarier fra en global klimamodell, samt økosystemmodellering for de samme nedskalerte scenariene. Resultatene fra disse modellstudiene sammen med ekspertvurderinger om hvordan modellerte endringer i klima vil påvirke ulike bestander i Nordsjøen, Norskehavet og Barentshavet utgjør risikoanalysen. Basert på modellerte endringer i fysiske og biogeokjemiske variabler samt kunnskapen om 13 forskjellige bestanders habitater og respons til klimavariasjoner, har vi vektet klimapåvirkningene og retningene disse har i fremtidige klimascenarier. Resultatene viser at det er dagens bestander av sild, torsk, og raudåte i Nordsjøen samt polartorsk i Barentshavet som vil bli mest negativt påvirket av klimaendringene. Bestander som kan migrere nordover og inn i våre havområder eller bestander som befinner seg nær midten av det foretrukne temperaturintervallet slik som nordøstatlantisk makrell, norsk vårgytende sild, nordøstarktisk torsk er de som er vinnerne i et fremtidig varmere klima. Kunnskapsgrunnlaget for hvor mye og hvordan ulike arter responderer på ytre påvirkninger vil endre seg med tiden, og analysen bør derfor gjentas når ny kunnskap blir tilgjengelig. Coastal seas receive large amounts of terrestrially derived organic carbon (OC). The fate of this carbon, and its impact on the marine environment, is however poorly understood. Here we combine underway CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) measurements with coupled 3-D hydrodynamical–biogeochemical modelling to investigate whether remineralization of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (tDOC) can explain CO2 supersaturated surface waters in the Gulf of Bothnia, a subarctic estuary. We find that a substantial remineralization of tDOC and a strong tDOC-induced light attenuation dampening the primary production are required to reproduce the observed CO2 supersaturated waters in the nearshore areas. A removal rate of tDOC of the order of 1 year, estimated in a previous modelling study in the same area, gives a good agreement between modelled and observed pCO2. The remineralization rate is on the same order as bacterial degradation rates calculated from published incubation experiments, suggesting that bacteria has the potential to cause this degradation. Furthermore, the observed high pCO2 values during the ice-covered season argue against photochemical degradation as the main removal mechanism. All of the remineralized tDOC is outgassed to the atmosphere in the model, turning the northernmost part of the Gulf of Bothnia into a source of CO2 to the atmosphere.

High inputs of nutrients and organic matter make coastal seas places of intense air-sea CO2 exchange. Due to their complexity, the role of coastal seas in the global air-sea CO2 exchange is, however, still uncertain. Here, we investigate the role of phytoplankton stoichiometric flexibility and extracellular DOC production for the seasonal nutrient and CO2 partial pressure (pCO(2)) dynamics in the Gulf of Bothnia, Northern Baltic Sea. A 3-D ocean biogeochemical-physical model with variable phytoplankton stoichiometry is for the first time implemented in the area and validated against observations. By simulating non-Redfieldian internal phytoplankton stoichiometry, and a relatively large production of extracellular dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the model adequately reproduces observed seasonal cycles in macronutrients and pCO(2). The uptake of atmospheric CO2 is underestimated by 50% if instead using the Redfield ratio to determine the carbon assimilation, as in other Baltic Sea models currently in use. The model further suggests, based on the observed drawdown of pCO(2), that observational estimates of organic carbon production in the Gulf of Bothnia, derived with the 14C method, may be heavily underestimated. We conclude that stoichiometric variability and uncoupling of carbon and nutrient assimilation have to be considered in order to better understand the carbon cycle in coastal seas.

Newly developed ecosystem model NEMO-Nordic-SCOBI was applied to Skagerrak - Kattegat area to investigate the variability of some indicators of the ecosystem. Also, two sensitivity runs were performed to investigate possible effect of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and a river loads reduction scenario on the Skagerrak - Kattegat area. The performed investigation could be used “to provide a basis to assist with the interpretation of measurement data before the Intermediate Assessments Eutrophication status assessment”. Comparison of simulation results with observations indicates acceptable model performance. Modeled sea surface salinity, temperature and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) are in good agreement with observations. At the same time, the model has a bias in certain areas of the investigated region for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved silicate during the winter season. However, the model in its current state shows good enough results for the performed investigation. Results of the two sensitivity studies show a decrease of sea surface nutrients concentrations during winter period in both regions. In the Skagerrak area the decrease is due to reduction in river nutrient loads in North Sea. In the Kattegat area there is a decrease of dissolved phosphate due to the implementation of BSAP. At the same time, in both scenarios, no significant changes were obtained for near bottom oxygen or surface layer Chl-a. Den nyligen utvecklade ekosystemmodellen NEMO-Nordic-SCOBI användes för att studera variabiliteten av några indikatorer för ekosystemet i Skagerrak- kattegatt området. Även två känslighetsstudier gjordes för att undersöka möjliga effekter av Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) och en reduktion scenario av närsaltstillförsel på Skagerrak-Kattegatt området. Den utförda studien kan användas som underlag och stöd vid tolkningen av observationsdata inför utvärderingen ”Intermediate Assessments Eutrophication status assessment”. Jämförelsen mellan modelldata och observationer indikerar att modellens resultat är acceptabla. Modellerade ytvärden av salthalt, temperatur och löst fosfat (DIP) visar god överenskommelse med observerade värden. Samtidigt har modellresultaten avvikelser i vissa delområden vad gäller löst oorganiskt kväve (DIN) och löst kisel under vitertid. Dock visar modellen i sitt nuvarande tillstånd tillräckligt goda resultat för den aktuella studien. Resultaten från de två känslighetsstudierna visar en minskning av näringskoncentrationer i ytan under vintern i båda havsområdena. I Skagerrak är minskningen orsakad av reducerad närsaltstillförsel i Nordsjön. I Kattegatt minskar lösta fosfatet på grund av genomförandet av BSAP. Ingen av scenarierna visade någon signifikant påverkan på syre vid havsbotten eller på ytkoncentratiner av Chl-a.
