Abstract

Aim Ecological and anthropogenic factors shift the abundances of dominant and rare tree species within local forest communities, thus affecting species composition and ecosystem functioning. To inform forest and conservation management it is important to understand the drivers of dominance and rarity in local tree communities. We answer the following research questions: (1) What are the patterns of dominance and rarity in tree communities? (2) Which ecological and anthropogenic factors predict these patterns? And (3) what is the extinction risk of locally dominant and rare tree species? Location Global. Time period 1990–2017. Major taxa studied Trees. Methods We used 1.2 million forest plots and quantified local tree dominance as the relative plot basal area of the single most dominant species and local rarity as the percentage of species that contribute together to the least 10% of plot basal area. We mapped global community dominance and rarity using machine learning models and evaluated the ecological and anthropogenic predictors with linear models. Extinction risk, for example threatened status, of geographically widespread dominant and rare species was evaluated. Results Community dominance and rarity show contrasting latitudinal trends, with boreal forests having high levels of dominance and tropical forests having high levels of rarity. Increasing annual precipitation reduces community dominance, probably because precipitation is related to an increase in tree density and richness. Additionally, stand age is positively related to community dominance, due to stem diameter increase of the most dominant species. Surprisingly, we find that locally dominant and rare species, which are geographically widespread in our data, have an equally high rate of elevated extinction due to declining populations through large-scale land degradation. Abstract

Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system1. Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests2–5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced6 and satellite-derived approaches2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151–363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets.

Abstract

1. Biodiversity is an important component of natural ecosystems, with higher species richness often correlating with an increase in ecosystem productivity. Yet, this relationship varies substantially across environments, typically becoming less pronounced at high levels of species richness. However, species richness alone cannot reflect all important properties of a community, including community evenness, which may mediate the relationship between biodiversity and productivity. If the evenness of a community correlates negatively with richness across forests globally, then a greater number of species may not always increase overall diversity and productivity of the system. Theoretical work and local empirical studies have shown that the effect of evenness on ecosystem functioning may be especially strong at high richness levels, yet the consistency of this remains untested at a global scale. 2. Here, we used a dataset of forests from across the globe, which includes composition, biomass accumulation and net primary productivity, to explore whether productivity correlates with community evenness and richness in a way that evenness appears to buffer the effect of richness. Specifically, we evaluated whether low levels of evenness in speciose communities correlate with the attenuation of the richness–productivity relationship. 3. We found that tree species richness and evenness are negatively correlated across forests globally, with highly speciose forests typically comprising a few dominant and many rare species. Furthermore, we found that the correlation between diversity and productivity changes with evenness: at low richness, uneven communities are more productive, while at high richness, even communities are more productive. 4. Abstract

Hypothesis / aims of study Alpha-blockers are the cornerstone for the medical treatment of male LUTS [1]. Despite the positive recommendation in all relevant guidelines, the efficacy of these drugs has been debated [2]. The Dutch general practitioners guideline Male LUTS recommends the discontinuation of α-blockers after a successful period of treatment for 3 to 6 months [3]. No evidence is provided to support that recommendation. The 2015 EAU guideline Treatment of Non-neurogenic Male LUTS recommends that the discontinuation of the α1-blocker after six months might be considered in men with moderate LUTS, who are treated with combination therapy [1]. This reommendation is based on one randomised controlled trial and one open label study. In this study, we systematically reviewed the literature for studies evaluating the effect of discontinuation of α-blockers in uncomplicated male LUTS. We were particularly interested in the effect of discontinuation on symptom severity and urinary flow rates. Study design, materials and methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. The review protocol was registered at the PROSPERO database (number blinded to allow anonymous review of abstract). On January 15th 2016, The PUBMED, EMBASE and COCHRANE databases were searched without limitations on study design or time limits. The following search terms were used: Adrenergic alpha blockers [MeSH] AND (LUTS OR BPH OR lower urinary tract symptoms OR benign prostate hypertrophy OR benign prostate enlargement) AND (discontinu∗ OR interrup∗ OR cessa∗ OR stop∗ OR withdra∗ OR intermit∗). We included all studies in which the discontinuation of α-blocker treatment in men with LUTS was assessed with at least one of the following outcomes: symptom score (International Prostate Symptom Score [IPSS], or other), quality of life outcomes, uroflowmetric assessment, post voided residual urine volume (PVR). Two reviewers independently selected the studies and extracted all data; in case of disagreement consensus was found. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaborations tool for assessing risk of bias. Results We included 16 studies out of 876 potential publications. Nine studies (with 1,440 patients) reported on α-blocker monotherapy discontinuation (2 double-blind RCTs, 3 open label RCTs and 4 cohort studies). Seven other studies (with 1,148 participants) reported on discontinuation of an α-blocker following combination of α-blocker and 5- α-reductase inhibitors therapy (1 blinded RCT, 4 open label RCTs and 2 cohort studies). All studies were performed in secondary or tertiary care centres. The 10 RCTs are further discussed. The quality of the 10 RCTs was generally poor, with high risk of selection bias, performance bias and detection bias (Figure 1). Pooling of data was possible for IPSS outcomes and urinary flow rates (Qmax) at 3 and 6 months after discontinuation. At 3 months, men who continued α-blocker treatment had lower IPSS scores than those who discontinued (3 studies, 157 participants): mean difference (CI95%) -3.65 (-5.04, -2.25). At 6 months (4 studies, 226 participants) this difference was -3.25 (-5.74, -0.76). At 3 months (3 studies, 157 participants), Qmax did not differ between discontinuation and continuation groups 1.20 ml/sec (- 1.10, 3.50). At 6 months, in men who were on combination therapy, discontinuation of α-blocker therapy did not result in a change in Qmax, when compared to men who continued therapy (See Figure 2). Interpretation of results Only a small number of studies were found on the effect of (dis)continuation of α-blocker use, and only short-term outcomes are reported. The methodological quality of these studies was generally poor, especially with respect to selection, randomisation and blinding. Mean difference in symptom scores was 3.65 and 3.25 at 3 and 6 months, respectively. This difference is around the effect that patients may note as 'slight change'. Differences in Qmax were noted in men who discontinued α-blocker monotherapy, but not in those on combination therapy. Concluding message Discontinuation of α-blocker therapy results in a slight symptom deterioration, when compared to continuation of treatment. This supports both the Dutch GP guideline Male LUTS [3], as well as the EAU guideline Treatment of Non-neurogenic Male LUTS [1]. We believe, however, that strong conclusions cannot be drawn, because only a few studies of generally poor methodological quality were available, reporting on short-term outcomes only. Abstract

Succession is a fundamental concept in ecology because it indicates how species populations, communities, and ecosystems change over time on new substrate or after a disturbance. A mechanistic understanding of succession is needed to predict how ecosystems will respond to land-use change and to design effective ecosystem restoration strategies. Yet, despite a century of conceptual advances a comprehensive successional theory is lacking. Here we provide an overview of 19 successional theories ('models') and their key points, group them based on conceptual similarity, explain conceptual development in successional ideas and provide suggestions how to move forward. Four groups of models can be recognised. The first group (patch & plants) focuses on plants at the patch level and consists of three subgroups that originated in the early 20th century. One subgroup focuses on the processes (dispersal, establishment, and performance) that operate sequentially during succession. Another subgroup emphasises individualistic species responses during succession, and how this is driven by species traits. A last subgroup focuses on how vegetation structure and underlying demographic processes change during succession. A second group of models (ecosystems) provides a more holistic view of succession by considering the ecosystem, its biota, interactions, diversity, and ecosystem structure and processes. The third group (landscape) considers a larger spatial scale and includes the effect of the surrounding landscape matrix on succession as the distance to neighbouring vegetation patches determines the potential for seed dispersal, and the quality of the neighbouring patches determines the abundance and composition of seed sources and biotic dispersal vectors. A fourth group (socio-ecological systems) includes the human component by focusing on socio-ecological systems where management practices have long-lasting legacies on successional pathways and where regrowing vegetations deliver a range of ecosystem services to local and global stakeholders. The four groups of models differ in spatial scale (patch, landscape) or organisational level (plant species, ecosystem, socio-ecological system), increase in scale and scope, and reflect the increasingly broader perspective on succession over time. They coincide approximately with four periods that reflect the prevailing view of succession of that time, although all views still coexist. The four successional views are: succession of plants (from 1910 onwards) where succession was seen through the lens of species replacement; succession of communities and ecosystems (from 1965 onwards) when there was a more holistic view of succession; succession in landscapes (from 2000 onwards) when it was realised that the structure and composition of landscapes strongly impact successional pathways, and increased remote-sensing technology allowed for a better quantification of the landscape context; and succession with people (from 2015 onwards) when it was realised that people and societal drivers have strong effects on successional pathways, that ecosystem processes and services are important for human well-being, and that restoration is most successful when it is done by and for local people. Our review suggests that the hierarchical successional framework of Pickett is the best starting point to move forward as this framework already includes several factors, and because it is flexible, enabling application to different systems. The framework focuses mainly on species replacement and could be improved by focusing on succession occurring at different hierarchical scales (population, community, ecosystem, socio-ecological system), and by integrating it with more recent developments and other successional models: by considering different spatial scales (landscape, region), temporal scales (ecosystem processes occurring over centuries, and evolution), and by taking the effects of the surrounding landscape (landscape integrity and composition, the disperser community) and societal factors (previous and current land-use intensity) into account. Such a new, comprehensive framework could be tested using a combination of empirical research, experiments, process-based modelling and novel tools. Applying the framework to seres across broadscale environmental and disturbance gradients allows a better insight into what successional processes matter and under what conditions., (© 2023 The Authors. Abstract

Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system 1 . Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests 2-5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced 6 and satellite-derived approaches 2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151-363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea 2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets., (© 2023. 9. Discontinuation of alpha-blocker therapy in men with lower urinary tract symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract

Objectives: We aimed to synthesise the available data for the effect of stopping alpha-blocker therapy among men with lower urinary tract symptoms. The focus was on symptom, uroflowmetry and quality of life outcomes, but we also reviewed the adverse events (AEs) and the number of patients who restarted therapy., Data Sources: We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE/Ovid and The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to May 2018., Eligibility Criteria: We selected studies regardless of study design in which men were treated with an alpha-blocker for at least 3 months and in which the effects of alpha-blocker discontinuation were subsequently studied. Only controlled trials were used for the primary objective., Data Extraction and Synthesis: Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias for the controlled studies only using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias. Data were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses., Results: We identified 10 studies (1081 participants) assessing the primary objective. Six studies (733 participants) assessed differences in AEs between continuation and discontinuation, and six studies (501 participants) reported the numbers of subjects that restarted treatment after discontinuation. No studies in primary care were identified. After discontinuing monotherapy, symptom scores increased and peak flow rates decreased at 3 and 6 months, but not at 12 months; however, neither parameter changed when alpha-blockers were stopped during combination therapy. Small differences in post-void residual volumes and quality of life scores were considered clinically irrelevant. We also found that 0%-49% of patients restarted after stopping alpha-blocker therapy and that AEs did not increase with discontinuation., Conclusions: Discontinuing alpha-blocker monotherapy leads to a worsening compared with continuing therapy. Discontinuing the alpha-blocker after combination therapy had no significant effects on outcomes in either the short or long term. Discontinuation may be appropriate for the frail, elderly or those with concomitant illness or polypharmacy. 11. Understanding climate change from a global analysis of city analogues.

Abstract

Combating climate change requires unified action across all sectors of society. However, this collective action is precluded by the 'consensus gap' between scientific knowledge and public opinion. Here, we test the extent to which the iconic cities around the world are likely to shift in response to climate change. By analyzing city pairs for 520 major cities of the world, we test if their climate in 2050 will resemble more closely to their own current climate conditions or to the current conditions of other cities in different bioclimatic regions. Even under an optimistic climate scenario (RCP 4.5), we found that 77% of future cities are very likely to experience a climate that is closer to that of another existing city than to its own current climate. In addition, 22% of cities will experience climate conditions that are not currently experienced by any existing major cities. As a general trend, we found that all the cities tend to shift towards the sub-tropics, with cities from the Northern hemisphere shifting to warmer conditions, on average ~1000 km south (velocity ~20 km.year-1), and cities from the tropics shifting to drier conditions. We notably predict that Madrid's climate in 2050 will resemble Marrakech's climate today, Stockholm will resemble Budapest, London to Barcelona, Moscow to Sofia, Seattle to San Francisco, Tokyo to Changsha. Our approach illustrates how complex climate data can be packaged to provide tangible information. The global assessment of city analogues can facilitate the understanding of climate change at a global level but also help land managers and city planners to visualize the climate futures of their respective cities, which can facilitate effective decision-making in response to on-going climate change., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.
