In 1996 and 1997 the Galileo Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) obtained the first measurements of Jupiter's nightside midultraviolet (MUV) polar auroral spectrum from 1620 to 3231 A at 13 A resolution.

In 1996 during the first four orbits of the satellite tour the Galileo ultraviolet spectrometer (UVS) (1130-4320 A) and extreme ultraviolet spectrometer (EUVS)(540-1280 A) performed near-simultaneous observations of the Jupiter aurora in both the north and south polar regions.

The Galileo Ultravilet Spectrometer Experiment (UVS) obtained a partial celestial sphere map of interplanetary Lyman-alpha (IP L alpha) on 13-14 December 1990 during the first Earth encounter. The Galileo spacecraft was near the downwind axis of the local interstellar medium flow. These UVS measurements sampled the downwind, anti-sunward hemisphere. The data were modeled using a hot model of the interplanetary hydrogen density distribution with the goal of studying multiple scattering effects in the inner solar system. The derived ratio in the downwind direction of the observed brightness and a single scattering model brightness, both normalized to unity in the upwind direction, is 1.82 +/- 0.2. This brightness ratio requires a multiple scattering correction which is 36% larger than can be accounted for by theoretical calculations. The hot model may require: (1) a temperature perturbation of the interstellar wind velocity distribution or (2) an additional downstream source of interplanetary hydrogen. However, a more likely exlanation which affects the hot model is the latitude dependence of the radiation pressure. This dependence, based on the known solar L alpha flux latitude variation at solar maximum, causes a downwind brightness enhancement by preferential focusing of H-atoms with trajectory planes containing the solar poles. This result implies that radiation pressure near the solar poles is nearly independent of solar cycle and is insufficient to lead to a net repulsion of hydrogen atoms by the sun, as can occur near the ecliptic plane during the solar maximum. In addition, the UVS performed 13 observations of IP L alpha while in cruise between Venus and the Earth in 3 directions fixed in ecliptic coordinates.

In its December 1990 fly-by of Earth, the Galileo spacecraft found evidence of abundant gaseous oxygen, a widely distributed surface pigment with a sharp absorption edge in the red part of the visible spectrum, and atmospheric methane in extreme thermodynamic disequilibrium; together, these are strongly suggestive of life on Earth. Moreover, the presence of narrow-band, pulsed, amplitude-modulated radio transmission seems uniquely attributable to intelligence. These observations constitute a control experiment for the serach for extraterrestrial life by modern interplanetary spacecraft.

Solar Ly-alpha latitude variation at solar maximum is examined on the basis of interplanetary Ly-alpha observations made during the Galileo and Pioneer Venus UV spectrometer experiments. A comparison is made of the latitude variation of the interplanetary (IP) Ly-alpha signal in 1986 at solar minimum from Pioneer Venus and in 1990 at solar maximum from Galileo. The Galileo EUV spectrometer shows that a large enhancement of the IP Ly-alpha emission occurred over the intervening four years near the solar equator. An IP Ly-alpha model is developed which considers the latitude variation of the solar Ly-alpha flux. The model fit to the data shows a 25-percent decrease of the full disk solar Ly-alpha flux from solar equator to solar pole in 1990. A detailed study of the Galileo IP Ly-alpha observations on day-of-year 190, 193, 197, and 200 in 1990 reveals that large variations occur in response to the 27-d solar variation. Analysis of these data shows that a maximum variation of 20 percent can be expected in the IP Ly-alpha upwind intensity over this 27-d period.

The Galileo ultraviolet spectrometer experiment uses data obtained by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) mounted on the pointed orbiter scan platform and from the Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EUVS) mounted on the spinning part of the orbiter with the field of view perpendicular to the spin axis. The UVS is a Ebert-Fastie design that covers the range 113-432 nm with a wavelength resolution of 0.7 nm below 190 and 1.3 nm at longer wavelengths. The UVS spatial resolution is 0.4 deg x 0.1 deg for illuminated disk observations and 1 deg x 0.1 deg for limb geometries. The EUVS is a Voyager design objective grating spectrometer, modified to cover the wavelength range from 54 to 128 nm with wavelength resolution 3.5 nm for extended sources and 1.5 nm for point sources and spatial resolution of 0.87 deg x 0.17 deg. The EUVS instrument will follow up on the many Voyager UVS discoveries, particularly the sulfur and oxygen ion emissions in the Io torus and molecular and atomic hydrogen auroral and airglow emissions from Jupiter. The UVS will obtain spectra of emission, absorption, and scattering features in the unexplored, by spacecraft, 170-432 nm wavelength region. The UVS and EUVS instruments will provide a powerful instrument complement to investigate volatile escape and surface composition of the Galilean satellites, the Io plasma torus, micro- and macro-properties of the Jupiter clouds, and the composition structure and evolution of the Jupiter upper atmosphere.

Voyager 2 UV-photopolarimeter occultation observations toward Gamma Peg, obtained on the nightside of Uranus at planetocentric latitude 68.9 deg N on January 24, 1986, are used to probe the structure of the Uranian atmosphere. The data are presented graphically and compared with the predictions of model atmospheres. The temperature profile for an aerosol-free atmosphere ranges from 85 + or - 2.3 K at 2.7 mbar to 96 + or - 13 K at 370 microbar, and the 1-mbar radius is found to be 25,219 + or - 6.3 km. The extinction coefficient for an aerosol haze layer at 1 mbar or higher is shown to be less than or equal to about 0.0001/km, but it is suggested that a well-mixed haze layer consisting of meteor or ring dust and/or photochemical condensates may well be present below 3 mbar.

The results of Voyager 2 photopolarimetry (PPS) surveys of Uranus, the ring system, occultation experiments and observations of the Uranian moons are reported. Dual-channel photometry and polarimetry data obtained of the atmosphere at various emission and phase angles are delineated and compared with characteristics of the Saturn and Jupiter atmospheres. The results of temperature, UV absorption and density profile calculations are also discussed. Extensive ring dimensional data, based on two occultation experiments, are provided in tabular form noting that the rings contain no dust. Finally, the geometric albedos of the five major moons and the phase curve of the moon Titania are presented. The latter data indicate that Titanian surface features are not the result of recent events such as volcanism or ice slurry outflows.

Multiple-scattering radiative transfer calculations were used to deduce the vertical cloud structure (VCS) of Jupiter's equatorial region. The VCS model of the equatorial plumes is obtained through an analysis of Voyager images of the 6190-A methane band and the 6000-A continuum, and ground-based 8900-A methane band images. The VCS of the equatorial plumes is found to be consistent with the hypothesis that the plumes are caused by upwelling at the ammonia condensation level produced by buoyancy due to latent heat release from the condensation of water clouds nearly three scale heights below the plumes.

Voyager 2 photometric and polarimetric data are reduced and tabulated, with spatially resolved limb-to-terminator scans across Saturn's equatorial zone providing information on the altitude distribution of UV-absorbing hazes, together with the phase function and polarizing properties of stratospheric and tropospheric aerosols. It is found that the UV photometry and polarimetry are best fit by Rayleigh's phase matrix. A stratospheric haze of small particles is allowed as long as the optical depth is near unity or less, and the center of the haze layer is in the 30 to 70 mbar region. The altitudes presently derived for three latitudes agree with those obtained by ground-based methane band studies and analyses from Pioneer 11. A high altitude absorber is abundant in the polar regions.

On Aug. 25, 1981, the Voyager 2 photopolarimeter system observed a stellar occultation by Saturn's rings. A brief description of this experiment along with details of the data reduction are presented. The occultation results are given in tabular and graphical form at a resolution of 60 km. Histograms of the frequency of optical depth show dominantly unimodal distributions in each of the classical ring elements. The frequency distribution of the entire ring system shows three modes at tau values of about 0.08, 0.5, and more than 2.5.

Observations of Titan's whole-disk polarization at 2460 and 7500 A are presented and analyzed in terms of model scattering atmospheres. If the Titan aerosols are spherical or nearly spherical, no single combination of refractive index and size distribution is able to fit data at both wavelengths. However, a vertically inhomogeneous distribution suggested by Tomasko and Smith (1980), characterized by a size gradient with altitude, fits the data at 2640 A moderately well but must be modified at intermediate and large optical depths to fit the 7500-A data. Results for synthetic phase functions indicate that the single-scattering polarization must be 70 percent or larger in the UV and 78 percent or larger in the near-IR at 90-deg phase angle, depending on the phase function. If the correct phase function is similar to that for 0.5-micron-radius spheres, the UV single-scattered polarization must be 84 percent and the near-IR single-scattered polarization must be over 90 percent. Such large polarizations are impossible for 0.5-micron-radius spheres but may be possible for nonspherical particles with effective radii near 0.5 micron, although the existence of nonspherical particles with the scattering properties required by these and other observations has not been demonstrated.

The Voyager 2 photopolarimeter experiment observed the intensity and polarization of scattered sunlight from the atmospheres of Saturn and Titan in the near-UV at 2640 A and in the near-IR at 7500 A. Measurements of Saturn's limb brightening and polarization at several phase angles up to 70 deg indicate that a significant optical depth of UV absorbers are present in the top 100 mbar of Saturn's atmosphere in the equatorial zone and north polar region, and possibly at other latitudes as well. UV absorbers are prominent in polar regions, suggesting that charged particle precipitation from the magnetosphere may be important in their formation. The whole-body polarization of Titan is strongly positive in both the UV and near IR. If spherical particles are responsible for the polarization, no single size distribution or refractive index can account for the polarization at both wavelengths. The model atmosphere proposed by Tomasko and Smith (1982), characterized by a gradient in particle size with altitude, seems capable of explaining the Voyager observations.

During both Voyager encounters with the saturnian system, the Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment detected strong discrete episodic bursts of radio emission, termed Saturn electrostatic discharges (SED). An examination of Voyager 2 photopolarimeter data now reveals a narrow feature (possibly a gap) in Saturn's B ring. A single, unique object appears to be responsible for both the SED and this feature.

The Voyager 2 photopolarimeter was reprogrammed prior to the August 1981 Saturn encounter to perform orthogonal-polarization, two-color measurements on Saturn, Titan, and the rings. Saturn's atmosphere has ultraviolet limb brightening in the mid-latitudes and pronounced polar darkening north of 65 deg N. Titan's opaque atmosphere shows strong positive polarization at all phase angles (2.7 deg to 154 deg), and no single-size spherical particle model appears to fit the data. A single radial stellar occultation of the darkened, shadowed rings indicated a ring thickness of less than 200 meters at several locations and clear evidence for density waves caused by satellite resonances. Multiple, very narrow strands of material were found in the Encke division and within the brightest single strand of the F ring.

Voyager 2 photometric observations of Jupiter at four phase angles between 20 and 80 deg and at various illumination angles are used to determine the altitude distribution and scattering properties of the material responsible for Jupiter's low geometric albedo at 2400 A. Center-to-limb measurements at midlatitudes indicate that most of the absorbing material lies deeper than 100 mbar, while the latitudinal distribution of stratospheric absorbers suggests that energy deposition from the magnetosphere is important in the formation of the absorbers. Scattering properties of model atmospheres containing three distinct aerosol size distributions are examined, and an upper limit to the column abundance of particles larger than the 0.05 micron radius in the north tropical zone and equatorial belt are derived. Rayleigh scattering fits the variation of intensity with phase angles between 20 and 80 deg better than any of the considered particle phase functions, although the Rayleigh scattering from the top 100 mbar obscures effects due to scattering from deeper absorbing particles.

Analysis of the bright-limb profiles obtained by the Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer during the December 1971 dust storm on Mars shows that the dust extended to an altitude of plus or minus 10 km, with a sharp cutoff in altitude distribution. Above the dust layer, the reflected signal is characterized by Rayleigh scattering in the wavelength interval 2100 to 3500 A. Detached haze layers were detected at an altitude of 70 plus or minus 10 km at the top of the dust layer. The haze layers have a nominal optical thickness of about 0.0001 and a geometrical thickness of 3 to 10 km and are probably a condensate of small CO2 or H2O ice particles (mean radius less than 0.1 micron). Similar features were revealed in Mariner 9 TV pictures of the limb.

Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer observations of the 1971 dust clouds obscuring the surface of Mars have been analyzed by matching the observed dust phase function with Mie scattering calculations for size distributions of homogeneous and isotropic material. Preliminary results indicate an effective particle radius of not less than 0.2. The real component of the index of refraction is not less than 1.8 at both 268 and 305 nm; corresponding values for the imagery component are 0.02 and 0.01. These values are consistent with those found by Mead (1970) for the visible and near-visible wavelengths. The refractive index and the absorption coefficient increase rapidly with decreasing wavelength in going from the visible to the ultraviolet, indicating the presence of an ultraviolet absorption band which may shield organisms from ultraviolet irradiation.

Ultraviolet spectrometer measurements of the reflectance at 3050 A are modeled to give pressure-altitudes for Mars assuming a quiescent atmosphere. Ultraviolet light that is Rayleigh-scattered by the Mars molecular atmosphere, with allowance for uniform turbidity, is proportional to surface pressure independent of atmospheric temperature structure. All model constants except the over-all scaling factors are found by requiring ultraviolet spectrometer pressures of 47 locations on the planet to be the same when measured at different geometries. The overall scaling factor is found by intercomparison with Mariner 9 occultation pressures. Comparison with other Mars pressure-altitude measurements show deviations from the assumption of uniform turbidity to occur over the Hesperia plateau for ultraviolet measurements obtained during the 13-26 February 1972 time period.

The paper describes the NASA Solar Mesosphere Explorer mission which will study mesospheric ozone and the processes which form and destroy it, measure the ozone density and its altitude distribution from 30 to 80 km, monitor incoming solar UV radiation, and provide a rigorous test of the photochemical equilibrium theory of the mesospheric oxygen-hydrogen system. Five instruments will be carried on the polar-orbiting spacecraft: UV ozone, IR airglow, and visible NO2 programmable Ebert-Fastie spectrometers, a four-channel IR radiometer, and a solar UV spectrometer. Atmospheric measurements will be made of the mesospheric and stratospheric ozone density distribution, water vapor density distribution, temperature profile, ozone photolysis rate, and NO2 density distribution. In addition, the solar UV monitor will measure both the 0.2-0.31 micron spectral region and the Lyman-alpha (0.1216 micron) contribution to the solar irradiance.

The photopolarimeter instrument on Voyager 2 was used to obtain a map of Jupiter at an effective wavelength of 2400 angstroms. Analysis of a typical north-south swath used to make this map shows strong absorption at high latitudes by a molecular or particulate constituent in the Jovian atmosphere. At 65 deg north latitude, the absorbing constituent extends to altitudes above the 50-millibar pressure level

Results are reported for optical-wavelength photopolarimetry of Ganymede from Voyager 1. A phase coefficient of 0.011 + or - 0.001 mag/deg and an opposition effect of 0.17 + or - 0.03 mag are derived. It is shown that Ganymede's surface is probably more porous than Callisto's and that micrometeoroids may continuously roughen the surface of Ganymede.

The vertical distribution of ozone in the atmosphere of Mars is computed from ultraviolet spectra obtained by the Mariner 9 spacecraft. In the Northern Hemisphere the ozone scale height is much smaller than the atmospheric scale height in midlatitudes and increases rapidly to a maximum farther north. At high latitudes (above 60 deg) there is no significant difference between the scale heights of ozone in the Northern (winter) Hemisphere and the Southern (summer) Hemisphere. Comparison of the ozone distribution with atmospheric temperature structure indicates that at some locations in the North, the density of water vapor increases with altitude, and the time for vertical mixing is about 3 days or more.

A general purpose filter photometer/polarimeter capable of measuring the intensity and linear polarization of scattered light at eight wavelengths in the 2350-7500 A spectral region has been adopted for the Voyager mission photopolarimeter experiment. Objectives of the experiment include determination of the vertical atmospheric aerosol distributions for Jupiter, Saturn and Titan, definition of cloud micro- and macro-structures, and identification of any regular crystalline particles in the clouds. In addition, the density of the satellite atmospheres will be assessed, and the sodium vapor distributions near Io and in the Jovian magnetosphere will be mapped. Particle size and optical depth of Saturn's rings will also be investigated.

Selected results are presented for an analysis of Mariner 9 1304-A data from the first 100 passes. Based on a comparison of limb data, the exospheric temperature appears lower on several Mariner 9 passes than when Mariner 6 and 7 encountered the planet in 1969. Temperatures of 300 and 350 K are considered in the atmospheric modeling. At 300 K, derived values of the atomic oxygen concentration are typically between 0.5 and 1 percent of the total density at 135 km, based on fitting theoretical intensities to limb data from several passes. Structure in the limb data below 200 km suggests the possibility that approximately 0.2 kR of the observed approximately 0.8 kR near 150 km is due to dissociative excitation of CO2. There is variability in limb profiles indicating changes in the O distribution with time. The variability does not appear to follow a recognizable pattern. Interpretation of the 1304-A disc data shows a correlation in intensity with the 10.7 cm solar flux and larger O concentrations in the afternoon than in the morning. The correlation in intensity with the 10.7 cm flux is probably due largely to variation in the solar 1304-A fluxes. Selected disc data show localized and random enhancements in the intensity.

The UV airglow spectrum of Mars has been measured from an orbiting spacecraft during a 30-day period in November and December 1971. Significant variations in the scale height of the CO Cameron band airglow have been observed during a period of variable solar activity. The atomic oxygen and hydrogen airglow lines are present during all the observations. Measurements of the reflectance of the lower atmosphere of Mars show the spectral characteristics of particle scattering and a magnitude that is about 50% of that measured during the Mariner 6 and 7 experiments in 1969.

Review of some of the results of the Mariner 7 ultraviolet spectrometer observations of the south polar cap of Mars. The near ultraviolet polar spectrum shows the predominance of surface reflection over atmospheric scattering. The intensity of the reflected radiation decreased steeply for a change in solar elevation of only about 10 deg. Neither a haze layer nor ground inhomogeneity is considered a likely explanation for this observation. An unusual photometric function of the surface is more probable. An analysis of reflected radiation intensity as a function of incidence and emission angles was made, assuming a photometric function for the surface. The angular inversion revealed a 'smoothness factor' suggestive of an icy or glazed surface. A hypothesis is advanced to explain the observed phenomena and associated polar features.

Mariner 9 ultraviolet morning terminator data indicate the presence of a high, optically thin scattering layer in the equatorial region of Mars extending to 50S. This is consistent with the afternoon terminator results, which showed the presence of a scattering layer for latitudes as far north as 50N. For both types of terminator observations, the magnitude of the reflectivity for large shadow heights and the apparent scale height of the signal are too large to be explained by a homogeneous atmosphere. The terminator observations poleward of 50S were modeled by a homogeneous atmosphere of molecular and particulate scatterers. As the lower atmosphere began to clear from the dust storm, a progressive change was noted in the magnitude of the terminator reflectivity which is attributed to a changing albedo for single scattering. The shape of the morning terminator reflectivity measured as a function of shadow height indicates larger apparent scale heights than were observed in the afternoon. The difference is attributed to an increase in thickness of the scattering layer during the night.

The original scientific objectives and the achieved results are discussed. The upper atmosphere was found to have a variable temperature, with a mean exospheric temperature of 325 K; composed predominantley of CO2. Measurements of hydrogen and ozone are analyzed.

On Mars, the Mariner observations show a twenty-fold variation in the amount of ozone, depending on the presence or absence of another minor constituent, water vapor, in the atmosphere. In the evolution of earth's primitive atmosphere, the formation of an ozone layer may have played an important role in the prebiotic chemistry that took place on the surface. The seasonal formation and disappearance of ozone in the contemporary Martian atmosphere may be of consequence in any prebiotic chemistry that may be occurring there.
