We address a question whether the observed light curves of X-ray flares originating deep in galactic cores can give us independent constraints on the mass of the central supermassive black hole. To this end we study four brightest flares that have been recorded from Sagittarius A*. They all exhibit an asymmetric shape consistent with a combination of two intrinsically separate peaks that occur at a certain time-delay with respect to each other, and are characterized by their mutual flux ratio and the profile of raising/declining parts. Such asymmetric shapes arise naturally in the scenario of a temporary flash from a source orbiting near a super- massive black hole, at radius of only 10-20 gravitational radii. An interplay of relativistic effects is responsible for the modulation of the observed light curves: Doppler boosting, gravitational redshift, light focusing, and light-travel time delays. We find the flare properties to be in agreement with the simulations (our ray-tracing code sim5lib). The inferred mass for each of the flares comes out in agreement with previous estimates based on orbits of stars; the latter have been observed at radii and over time-scales two orders of magnitude larger than those typical for the X-ray flares, so the two methods are genuinely different. eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of about 0.9 m^2 and 0.6 m^2 at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering <180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of about 3.4 m^2, between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution <250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm^2 at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees FoV. The eXTP international consortium includes mostly major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. We explore some properties of twin kilohertz quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in a simple toy-model consisting of two oscillation modes coupled by a general nonlinear force. We examine resonant effects by slowly varying the values of the tunable, and nearly commensurable, eigenfrequencies. The behavior of the actual oscillation frequencies and amplitudes during a slow transition through the 3:2 resonance is examined in detail and it is shown that both are significantly affected by the nonlinearities in the governing equations. In particular, the amplitudes of oscillations reflect a resonant exchange of energy between the modes, as a result the initially weaker mode may become dominant after the transition. We note that a qualitatively similar behavior has been recently reported in several neutron star sources by Torok (2008, arXiv:0812.4751), who found that the difference of amplitudes in neutron star twin peak QPOs changes sign as the observed frequency ratio of the QPOs passes through the value 3:2., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by A&A

We construct a new family of analytic models of black hole accretion disks in dynamical equilibria. Our construction is based on assuming distributions of angular momentum and entropy. For a particular choice of the distribution of angular momentum, we calculate the shapes of equipressure surfaces. Two inter-related peaks occur in high-frequency power spectra of X-ray lightcurves of several black-hole candidates. We further explore the idea that a non-linear resonance mechanism, operating in strong-gravity regime, is responsible for these quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). By extending the multiple-scales analysis of Rebusco, we construct two-dimensional phase-space sections, which enable us to identify different topologies governing the system and to follow evolutionary tracks of the twin peaks. This suggests that the original (Abramowicz and Kluzniak) parametric-resonance scheme can be viewed as an ingenuous account of the QPOs model with an internal resonance. We show an example of internal resonance in a system with up to two critical points, and we describe a general technique that permits to treat other cases in a systematical manner. A separatrix divides the phase-space sections into regions of different topology: inside the libration region the evolutionary tracks bring the observed twin-peak frequencies to an exact rational ratio, whereas in the circulation region the observed frequencies remain off resonance. Our scheme predicts the power should cyclically be exchanged between the two oscillations. Likewise the high-frequency QPOs in neutron-star binaries, also in black-hole sources one expects, as a general property of the non-linear model, that slight detuning pushes the twin-peak frequencies out of sharp resonance., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 11 pages, 6 figures

We study polarization from scattering of light on a cloud in radial motion along the symmetry axis of an accretion disk. Radiation drag from the disk and gravitational attraction of the central black hole are taken into account, as well as the effect of the cloud cooling in the radiation field. This provides us with a self-consistent toy-model for predicted lightcurves, including the linear polarization that arises from the scattering. Strong gravitational lensing creates indirect images; these are formed by photons that originate from the disk, get backscattered onto the photon circular orbit and eventually redirected towards an observer. Under suitable geometrical conditions the indirect photons may visibly influence the resulting magnitude of polarization and light-curve profiles. In the resonance model, high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are supposed to be a consequence of nonlinear resonance between modes of oscillations occurring within the innermost parts of an accretion disk. Several models with a prescribed mode--mode interaction were proposed in order to explain the characteristic properties of the resonance in QPO sources. In this paper, we examine nonlinear oscillations of a system having two degrees of freedom and we show that this case could be particularly relevant for QPOs. We present a very convenient way how to study autoparametric resonances of a fully general system using the method of multiple scales. We study linear polarization due to scattering of light on a cloudlet of particles, taking into account the radiation drag and the gravitational pull exerted on them by a central body. Effects of special and general relativity are included by connecting a model of Beloborodov (1998) for the local polarization of scattered light with Abramowicz, Ellis & Lanza (1990) formalism for the particle motion near an ultra-compact star. Compactness of the central body and its luminosity are two critical parameters of the model. We discuss the polarization magnitude of photons, which are Thomson-scattered into direct and higher-order images. Importance of the latter is only moderate under typical conditions, but they may give rise to distinct features, which we explore in terms of a toy model. The scattered signal exhibits variations of intensity and of polarization with mutual time-lags depending on the beaming/focusing effects and the light travel time., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 16 pages, 13 figures

Double peak kHz QPO frequencies in neutron star sources varies in time by a factor of hundreds Hz while in microquasar sources the frequencies are fixed and located at the line \nu_2 = 1.5 \nu_1 in the frequency-frequency plot. The crucial question in the theory of twin HFQPOs is whether or not those observed in neutron-star systems are essentially different from those observed in black holes. In black hole systems the twin HFQPOs are known to be in a 3:2 ratio for each source. At first sight, this seems not to be the case for neutron stars. For each individual neutron star, the upper and lower kHz QPO frequencies, \nu_2 and \nu_1, are linearly correlated, \nu_2=A \nu_1 + B, with the slope A < 1.5, i.e., the frequencies definitely are not in a 1.5 ratio. In this contribution we show that when considered jointly on a frequency-frequency plot, the data for the twin kHz QPO frequencies in several (as opposed to one) neutron stars uniquely pick out a certain preferred frequency ratio that is equal to 1.5 for the six sources examined so far., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, Astronomische Nachrichten, in press

The origin of quasi periodic modulations of flux in the kilohertz range (kHz QPOs), observed in low-mass X-ray binaries, is usually assumed to be physically distinct from that of the ``normal branch oscillations'' (NBOs) in the Z-sources. We show that a low-frequency modulation of the kHz QPOs is a natural consequence of the non-linear relativistic resonance suggested previously to explain the properties of the high-frequency twin peaks. The theoretical results discussed here are reminiscent of the 6 Hz variations of frequency and amplitude of the kHz QPOs reported by Yu, van der Klis and Jonker (2001)., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ; 4 pages, 1 figure
