Microplastic (MP) pollution has reached the remotest areas of the globe, including the polar regions. In the Arctic Ocean, MPs have been detected in ice, snow, water, sediment, and biota, but their temporal dynamics remain poorly understood. To better understand the transport pathways and drivers of MP pollution in this fragile environment, this study aims to assess MPs (≥ 11 μm) in sediment trap samples collected at the HAUSGARTEN observatory (Fram Strait) from September 2019 to July 2021. MP fluxes determined by μ-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging ranged from 0 to 2.9 MP m -2 d -1 , peaking in April 2020 and April 2021, with all detected MPs being <300 μm in size. There was no strong correlation between MPs and any of the recorded biogeochemical and physical variables, as each MP flux event was associated with different variables such as biogenic matter, sea ice concentration, or origin. Sea ice is a key element of the global Earth system, with a major impact on global climate and regional weather. Unfortunately, accurate sea ice modeling is challenging due to the diversity and complexity of underlying physics happening there, and a relative lack of ground truth observations. This is especially true for the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), which is the area where sea ice is affected by incoming ocean waves. Waves contribute to making the area dynamic, and due to the low survival time of the buoys deployed there, the MIZ is challenging to monitor. In 2022-2023, we released 79 OpenMetBuoys (OMBs) around Svalbard, both in the MIZ and the ocean immediately outside of it. OMBs are affordable enough to be deployed in large number, and gather information about drift (GNSS position) and waves (1-dimensional elevation spectrum). This provides data focusing on the area around Svalbard with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. The ice-ocean drag coefficient C w and turning angle θ w are crucial parameters in ice-ocean coupled simulations, determining the transfer of momentum between the two media. These parameters are often treated as constants regardless of the static stability at the ice-ocean interface. This study investigates the variability of C w and θ w based on direct observations of thermal and kinetic energy balance. The observations were conducted beneath multiyear ice packs widely across the central Arctic during a period transitioning from ablation to refreezing, indicating significant variability of C w  = 1-130 × 10 -3 and θ w  =  - 19-1° at 5 m depth. Comparing different stations, the observations suggest a pronounced dependence of C w on the stability parameter ( μ ) resulting from mechanical and buoyant forcing. C w rapidly decays with increasing μ , indicating that the ice-to-ocean momentum transfer is enhanced for neutral or unstable conditions, while it is weakened for stable conditions. In addition, observed vertical profiles of currents revealed that | θ w | tends to be smaller for unstable and larger for stable conditions. We present light measurements in Arctic sea ice obtained during the year-long MOSAiC drift through the central Arctic Ocean in 2019-2020. Such measurements are important as sea ice plays a fundamental role in the Arctic climate and ecosystem. The partitioning of solar irradiance determines the availability of radiation energy for thermodynamic processes and primary productivity. However, observations of light partitioning along the vertical path through the ice are rare. The data we present were collected by two measurement systems, the lightharp and the lightchain, both measuring autonomously multi-spectral light intensity in different depths within the ice. We present the dataset, retrieval methods for derived optical properties, and the conversion into the final, freely available data product, following standardized conventions. We particularly focus on the specifications of the newly developed lightharp system. Combined with the interdisciplinary and multi-instrument setup of MOSAiC, we expect great potential of the dataset to foster our understanding of light transmission and reflection in the sea-ice cover and interactions with physical sea-ice properties and the polar ecosystem., (© 2024. Arctic microbial communities (i.e., protists and bacteria) are increasingly subjected to an intrusion of new species via Atlantification and an uncertain degree of ocean warming. As species differ in adaptive traits, these oceanic conditions may lead to compositional changes with functional implications for the ecosystem. In June 2021, we incubated water from the western Fram Strait at three temperatures (2 °C, 6 °C, and 9 °C), mimicking the current and potential future properties of the Arctic Ocean. Our results show that increasing the temperature to 6 °C only minorly affects the community, while an increase to 9 °C significantly lowers the diversity and shifts the composition. A higher relative abundance of large hetero- and mixotrophic protists was observed at 2 °C and 6 °C compared to a higher abundance of intermediate-sized temperate diatoms at 9 °C. The compositional differences at 9 °C led to a higher chlorophyll a:POC ratio, but the C:N ratio remained similar. Our results contradict the common assumption that smaller organisms and heterotrophs are favored under warming and strongly indicate a thermal limit between 6 °C and 9 °C for many Arctic species. Consequently, the magnitude of temperature increase is a crucial factor for microbial community reorganization and the ensuing ecological consequences in the future Arctic Ocean.

Ocean turbulent mixing is a key process in the global climate system, regulating ocean circulation and the uptake and redistribution of heat, carbon, nutrients, oxygen and other tracers. In polar oceans, turbulent heat transport additionally affects the sea ice mass balance. Due to the inaccessibility of polar regions, direct observations of turbulent mixing are sparse in the Arctic Ocean. During the year-long drift expedition "Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate" (MOSAiC) from September 2019 to September 2020, we obtained an unprecedented data set of vertical profiles of turbulent dissipation rate and water column properties, including oxygen concentration and fluorescence. Nearly 1,700 profiles, covering the upper ocean down to approximately 400 m, were collected in sets of 3 or more consecutive profiles every day, and complemented with several intensive sampling periods. This data set allows for the systematic assessment of upper ocean mixing in the Arctic, and the quantification of turbulent heat and nutrient fluxes, and can help to better constrain turbulence parameterizations in ocean circulation models., (© 2022. Objective: Biochemical failure after radical prostatectomy (RP) for localized prostate cancer (PC) is the first evidence of disease recurrence. If residual benign prostatic glands are left behind on RP a theoretical PSA production from benign glands or residual neoplastic tissue could explain PSA failure. This study investigates the prediction and impact on disease outcome of residual benign glands at the urethrovesical anastomosis., Material and Methods: 802 patients who underwent RP were retrospectively evaluated with special focus on residual benign glands (B+) at the urethrovesical anastomosis. B-status was defined from a biopsy of the urethral stump at 9, 12 and 3 o'clock position., Results: From 802 patients 73.6% were classified as B+, 26.4% B0. 92.0% of B+ patients demonstrated only isolated glands (B1), 8.0% showed abundant glands (B2). There was no difference in disease outcome for B0 and B+ patients. Patients with early PC who are candidates for nerve sparing procedures are more likely for B+ status., Conclusions: Benign prostatic glands at the apical margin of the RP specimen are a common finding, but neither isolated nor abundant glands have an impact on disease outcome. We think that a precise apical dissection to improve continence rates is possible, although these patients are at risk for residual benign tissue at the apex.
