The Bibliographical Society of America (BSA) is the oldest scholarly society in North America dedicated to the study of books and manuscripts as physical objects. It was organized in 1904 and incorporated in 1927 with the principal objectives of promoting bibliographical research and issuing bibliographical publications. These objectives have been and continue to be accomplished through a broad array of activities, including meetings, lectures, and fellowship programs, as well as the publishing of books and the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America [PBSA], North America’s leading bibliographical journal. The society is open to all those interested in bibliographical problems and projects, and its membership includes bibliographers, librarians, professors, students, and collectors worldwide. For access to medieval manuscript sources scholars have traditionally relied on hard-copy book-format catalogues. Recently however there has been considerable interest in creating computerized manuscript catalogues or databases of manuscripts, and several innovative if mutually incompatible systems have been developed for this purpose. In the library world, computerized calaloguing systems utilizing the MARC format have been widely used for the past two decades, and databases and networks based on this format offer a well-tested means of communicating bibliographical information. Using two manuscripts from the Huntington Library as examples, this paper explores in detail the possibilities and limitations of cataloguing medieval codices in MARC format.

Form, genre, and physical characteristics are basic elements in the description of archival material. Either alone or in combination with such other information as name of originating agency, subject, place, and date, they are a powerful retrieval tool that is only beginning to be exploited. The authors summarize the value of access by type of material, describe the vocabulary lists currently in use by archivists and other special collections communities, and outline benefits of distinguishing subject headings from form headings. They focus on catalog entries in systems using the USMARC bibliographic format, with special attention to retrieval issues in catalogs shared by archival, rare book, and visual material collections. Their conclusion calls for increased use of form headings and more cooperation to ensure effective access.
