Abstract

This paper presents the design and technical progress of a precision X-Y stage for detector dithering and flexure compensation. The stage is being developed for use in the Magellan InfraRed Multi-Object Spectrograph, MIRMOS. MIRMOS is a very large Nasmyth mounted spectrograph containing a combination of refractive, reflective and diffractive optics mounted on a long cryogenic optical bench. The instrument utilizes five science cameras, each having a custom x-y stage to control the in-plane detector position within each camera, providing both dithering capability for improved sampling, and flexure compensation to correct for image motion that results from the gravity variant operation of the instrument. Designed to operate at 120~K, the stage will accurately control detector position in two orthogonal degrees of freedom, and have manual fine adjustment features to set detector tip, tilt and piston. The piezo-driven flexure stage provides high-resolution backlash-free motion of the detector and is very compact along the optical path, keeping camera length to a minimum. A magnetoresistive bridge provides position feedback in each degree of freedom, greatly reducing hysteresis, which is common in piezoelectric actuators. The system is designed to operate in open loop using a lookup table keyed to the Nasmyth rotator angle for flexure control. Abstract

The Magellan InfraRed Multi-Object Spectrograph (MIRMOS) is a planned next generation multi-object and integral field spectrograph for the 6.5m Magellan telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. MIRMOS will perform R$\sim$3700 spectroscopy over a simultaneous wavelength range of 0.886 - 2.404$\mu$m (Y,J,H,K bands) in addition to imaging over the range of 0.7 - 0.886$\mu$m. The integral field mode of operation for MIRMOS will be achieved via an image slicer style integral field unit (IFU) located on a linear stage to facilitate movement into the beam during use or storage while operating in multi-object mode. The IFU will provide a $\rm \sim20"\times26"$ field of view (FoV) made up of $\rm0.84"\times26"$ slices. This will be the largest FoV IFS operating at these wavelengths from either the ground or space, making MIRMOS an ideal instrument for a wide range of science cases including studying the high redshift circumgalactic medium and emission line tracers from ionized and molecular gas in nearby galaxies. In order to achieve the desired image quality and FoV while matching the focal ratio to the multi-object mode, our slicer design makes use of novel freeform surfaces for the pupil mirrors, which require the use of high precision multi-axis diamond milling to manufacture. Abstract

We describe the design and performance of the SuMIRe Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) visible camera cryostats. SuMIRe PFS is a massively multi-plexed ground-based spectrograph consisting of four identical spectrograph modules, each receiving roughly 600 fibers from a 2394 fiber robotic positioner at the prime focus. Each spectrograph module has three channels covering wavelength ranges 380~nm -- 640~nm, 640~nm -- 955~nm, and 955~nm -- 1.26~um, with the dispersed light being imaged in each channel by a f/1.07 vacuum Schmidt camera. The cameras are very large, having a clear aperture of 300~mm at the entrance window, and a mass of $\sim$280~kg. In this paper we describe the design of the visible camera cryostats and discuss various aspects of cryostat performance.

Abstract

PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope, is a very wide-field, massively multiplexed, optical and near-infrared spectrograph. Exploiting the Subaru prime focus, 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed over the 1.3 deg field of view. The spectrograph has been designed with 3 arms of blue, red, and near-infrared cameras to simultaneously observe spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure at a resolution of ~1.6-2.7A. An international collaboration is developing this instrument under the initiative of Kavli IPMU. The project is now going into the construction phase aiming at undertaking system integration in 2017-2018 and subsequently carrying out engineering operations in 2018-2019. Abstract

The Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is an optical/near-infrared multifiber spectrograph with 2394 science fibers distributed across a 1.3-deg diameter field of view at the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. The wide wavelength coverage from 0.38 {\mu}m to 1.26 {\mu}m, with a resolving power of 3000, simultaneously strengthens its ability to target three main survey programs: cosmology, galactic archaeology and galaxy/AGN evolution. A medium resolution mode with a resolving power of 5000 for 0.71 {\mu}m to 0.89 {\mu}m will also be available by simply exchanging dispersers. We highlight some of the technological aspects of the design. To transform the telescope focal ratio, a broad-band coated microlens is glued to each fiber tip. A higher transmission fiber is selected for the longest part of the cable system, optimizing overall throughput; a fiber with low focal ratio degradation is selected for the fiber-positioner and fiber-slit components, minimizing the effects of fiber movements and fiber bending. Fiber positioning will be performed by a positioner consisting of two stages of piezo-electric rotary motors. The positions of these motors are measured by taking an image of artificially back-illuminated fibers with the metrology camera located in the Cassegrain container; the fibers are placed in the proper location by iteratively measuring and then adjusting the positions of the motors. Target light reaches one of the four identical fast-Schmidt spectrograph modules, each with three arms. Abstract

We present details of the design for the CCD readout electronics for the Subaru Telescope Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS). The spectrograph is comprised of four identical spectrograph modules, each collecting roughly 600 spectra. The spectrograph modules provide simultaneous wavelength coverage over the entire band from 380 nm to 1260 nm through the use of three separate optical channels: blue, red, and near infrared (NIR). A camera in each channel images the multi-object spectra onto a 4k x 4k, 15 um pixel, detector format. The two visible cameras use a pair of Hamamatsu 2k x 4k CCDs with readout provided by custom electronics, while the NIR camera uses a single Teledyne HgCdTe 4k x 4k detector and ASIC Sidecar to read the device. The CCD readout system is a custom design comprised of three electrical subsystems: the Back End Electronics (BEE), the Front End Electronics (FEE), and a Pre-amplifier. The BEE is an off-the-shelf PC104 computer, with an auxiliary Xilinx FPGA module. The computer serves as the main interface to the Subaru messaging hub and controls other peripheral devices associated with the camera, while the FPGA is used to generate the necessary clocks and transfer image data from the CCDs. The FEE board sets clock biases, substrate bias, and CDS offsets. It also monitors bias voltages, offset voltages, power rail voltage, substrate voltage and CCD temperature. The board translates LVDS clock signals to biased clocks and returns digitized analog data via LVDS. Monitoring and control messages are sent from the BEE to the FEE using a standard serial interface. The Pre-amplifier board resides behind the detectors and acts as an interface to the two Hamamatsu CCDs. We present the detailed design of the near infrared camera for the SuMIRe (Subaru Measurement of Images and Redshifts) Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) being developed for the Subaru Telescope. The PFS spectrograph is designed to collect spectra from 2394 objects simultaneously, covering wavelengths that extend from 380 nm - 1.26 um. The spectrograph is comprised of four identical spectrograph modules, with each module collecting roughly 600 spectra from a robotic fiber positioner at the telescope prime focus. Each spectrograph module will have two visible channels covering wavelength ranges 380 nm - 640 nm and 640 nm - 955 nm, and one near infrared (NIR) channel with a wavelength range 955 nm - 1.26 um. Dispersed light in each channel is imaged by a 300 mm focal length, f/1.07, vacuum Schmidt camera onto a 4k x 4k, 15 um pixel, detector format. For the NIR channel a HgCdTe substrate-removed Teledyne 1.7 um cutoff device is used. In the visible channels, CCDs from Hamamatsu are used. These cameras are large, having a clear aperture of 300 mm at the entrance window, and a mass of ~ 250 kg. Like the two visible channel cameras, the NIR camera contains just four optical elements: a two-element refractive corrector, a Mangin mirror, and a field flattening lens. This simple design produces very good imaging performance considering the wide field and wavelength range, and it does so in large part due to the use of a Mangin mirror (a lens with a reflecting rear surface) for the Schmidt primary. In the case of the NIR camera, the rear reflecting surface is a dichroic, which reflects in-band wavelengths and transmits wavelengths beyond 1.26 um. PFS takes the role for the spectroscopic part of the Subaru Measurement of Images and Redshifts project, while Hyper Suprime-Cam works on the imaging part. To transform the telescope plus WFC focal ratio, a 3-mm thick broad-band coated glass-molded microlens is glued to each fiber tip. A higher transmission fiber is selected for the longest part of cable system, while one with a better FRD performance is selected for the fiber-positioner and fiber-slit components, given the more frequent fiber movements and tightly curved structure. Each Fiber positioner consists of two stages of piezo-electric rotary motors. Its engineering model has been produced and tested. Fiber positioning will be performed iteratively by taking an image of artificially back-illuminated fibers with the Metrology camera located in the Cassegrain container. The camera is carefully designed so that fiber position measurements are unaffected by small amounts of high special-frequency inaccuracies in WFC lens surface shapes. Target light carried through the fiber system reaches one of four identical fast-Schmidt spectrograph modules, each with three arms. Prototype VPH gratings have been optically tested. Abstract

International audience; This paper presents thermal system and imaging performance test results from the first of four near infrared cameras for the SuMIRe (Subaru Measurement of Images and Redshifts) Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) being developed for the Subaru Telescope. The PFS near infrared camera is a large (330 mm entrance aperture to accommodate a 275 mm collimated beam diameter) cryogenically cooled vacuum Schmidt camera with a 300 mm focal length that images dispersed light onto a 4k x 4k, 15 µm pixel, HgCdTe substrate-removed Teledyne 1.7 µm detector. The 230 kg camera contains just four optical elements: a two-element refractive corrector, a Mangin mirror, and a field flattening lens. This simple optical design produces good imaging performance considering the wide field and wavelength range, and it does so in large part due to the use of a Mangin mirror for the Schmidt primary. Thermal background, both in-band and out-of-band, is reduced to a scientifically acceptable level using cryogenically cooled optics, very black geometrically optimized baffling, and a pair of thermal rejection coatings that reject photons between the edge of the science bandpass and the detector cutoff. System operating temperature is achieved by a pair of closed-cycle cryocoolers, one dedicated to cooling the optics, and one dedicated to cooling the detector. Here we discuss the lab performance of the near infrared camera, both from the perspective of the thermal system and the optical system, including in-band and out-of-band performance.

Abstract

The James Webb Space Telescope will undergo a full system test in the cryogenic vacuum chamber A at the Johnson Spaceflight Center in order to verify the overall performance of the combined telescope and instrument suite. This will be the largest and most extensive cryogenic test ever undertaken. Early in the test system development, it was determined that precise position measurements of the overall hardware would enhance the test results. Various concepts were considered before selecting photogrammetry for this metrology. Photogrammetry has been used in space systems for decades, however cryogenic use combined with the size and the optical/thermal sensitivity of JWST creates a unique set of implementation challenges. This paper provides an overview of the JWST photogrammetric system and mitigation strategies for three key engineering design challenges: 1) the thermal design of the viewing windows to prevent excessive heat leak and stray light to the test article 2) cost effective motors and mechanisms to provide the angle diversity required, and 3) camera-flash life and reliability sufficient for inaccessible use during the number and duration of the cryogenic tests.

24. Einstein diffusion-mobility relations in semiconductors

Transport equations for semiconductors can be written with the diffusion term eD1Vn or eV(D2n), where D1 and D2 are diffusion coefficients. In Chapter 1 the issues arising from this ambiguity are clarified and convenient macroscopic transformation formulae between the two formulations, for application in semiconductor devices at low electric fields, are developed. A number of new macroscopic formulae for the Soret coefficient, the thermoelectric power and the thermal conductivity are derived. A consistent macroscopic scheme of equations is developed, which also include the Einstein diffusion - mobility ratio eD1u 2nnlrJ (1) T,V and a corresponding D2-Einstein relation. Transformation formulae between the D1 D2 formulations for application at high fields in the Gunn effect are given in Appendix H. In Chapter 2, (1) and the D2-Einstein relation are obtained microscopically from the Boltzmann transport equation for both zero and non-zero magnetic fields and for an arbitrary density of states. This is a steady state nonequilibrium linear argument valid, for low fields. In Chapter 3 generalised macroscopic theory is given and kept general enough to incorporate the effects of two types of non-linearity: (a) The ensemble average of the particle density operator is represented by a simple power series expansion, valid for equilibrium conditions, in the electrostatic potential ¢(r) up to terms in ~2(r). (b) For strong fields (E) and carriergradients (Vn) terms in E2, (Vn)2, V2n and EVn are considered in the total current. Thus one obtains new macroscopic non-linear Einstein-type equations valid for equilibrium situations, in terms of the coefficients occuring in the expansion (a), in addition to (1). The amendment (a) is of importance for weak non-uniformly-doped semiconductors even when the effect of (b) is negligible. Both (a) and (b) may be neglected in uniformly-doped semiconductors. In Chapter 4, using an equilibrium density matrix, a Kubo-formalism i.e. response theory is employed to obtain microscopic expressions for the coefficients occuring in the expansion in (a). The Einstein relation (1) and the non-linear relations obtained macroscopically in Chapter 3 are now given microscopic interpretations, in the sense that the coefficients in the expansion (a) are now known. In Section 4.5, which deals with heavily non-uniformly-doped crystals, it is suggested that (1) may no longer be valid. In Section 5.1 response theory is again used and integral expressione are obtained for the conductivity a, the diffusivity Dl and the coefficients of proportionality of the driving forces in amendment (b) which are seen to satisfy the Einstein relations given in Chapters 3 and 4. In Chapter 6 the main conclusions of the thesis are given. and various avenues for future research are discussed.

Abstract

PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph) is a next generation facility instruments on the Subaru telescope. 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed in the 1.3 degree field of view, and the spectrograph has 3 arms (blue, red, and near-infrared) to simultaneously observe spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure. In 2018, Metrology Camera System was delivered to the observatory and successfully tested on the telescope. Now in Nov 2019 the first spectrograph module with visible cameras is being shipped to Hawaii. The other subsystems are actively being developed to start on-sky engineering observation in 2020, and science operation in 2022. In this contribution, an overview of the current status and future perspectives will be presented.
