Abstract

Interannual variability in the global land carbon sink is strongly related to variations in tropical temperature and rainfall. This association suggests an important role for moisture-driven fluctuations in tropical vegetation productivity, but empirical evidence to quantify the responsible ecological processes is missing. Such evidence can be obtained from tree-ring data that quantify variability in a major vegetation productivity component: woody biomass growth. Here we compile a pantropical tree-ring network to show that annual woody biomass growth increases primarily with dry-season precipitation and decreases with dry-season maximum temperature. The strength of these dry-season climate responses varies among sites, as reflected in four robust and distinct climate response groups of tropical tree growth derived from clustering. Using cluster and regression analyses, we find that dry-season climate responses are amplified in regions that are drier, hotter and more climatically variable. These amplification patterns suggest that projected global warming will probably aggravate drought-induced declines in annual tropical vegetation productivity. Our study reveals a previously underappreciated role of dry-season climate variability in driving the dynamics of tropical vegetation productivity and consequently in influencing the land carbon sink.

2. Differential growth responses to water balance of coexisting deciduous tree species are linked to wood density in a Bolivian tropical dry forest.

Abstract

A seasonal period of water deficit characterizes tropical dry forests (TDFs). There, sympatric tree species exhibit a diversity of growth rates, functional traits, and responses to drought, suggesting that each species may possess different strategies to grow under different conditions of water availability. The evaluation of the long-term growth responses to changes in the soil water balance should provide an understanding of how and when coexisting tree species respond to water deficit in TDFs. Furthermore, such differential growth responses may be linked to functional traits related to water storage and conductance. We used dendrochronology and climate data to retrospectively assess how the radial growth of seven coexisting deciduous tree species responded to the seasonal soil water balance in a Bolivian TDF. Linear mixed-effects models were used to quantify the relationships between basal area increment and seasonal water balance. We related these relationships with wood density and sapwood production to assess if they affect the growth responses to climate. The growth of all species responded positively to water balance during the wet season, but such responses differed among species as a function of their wood density. For instance, species with a strong growth response to water availability averaged a low wood density which may facilitate the storage of water in the stem. By contrast, species with very dense wood were those whose growth was less sensitive to water availability. Coexisting tree species thus show differential growth responses to changes in soil water balance during the wet season. Our findings also provide a link between wood density, a trait related to the ability of trees to store water in the stem, and wood formation in response to water availability.

Abstract

Seasonally, dry tropical forests (SDTFs) are among the most diverse and threatened biomes in America. Several tree species coexist in these forests but their long-term growth responses to climate are unknown, and this is needed to make growth forecasts as a function of climate scenarios. We investigated the responses to climate, drought and ocean-atmosphere patterns of three tree species (Acosmium cardenasii H.S. Irwin & Arroyo, Centrolobium microchaete (Mart. ex Benth.) H.C. de Lima ex G.P. Lewis and Zeyheria tuberculosa (Vell.) Bureau coexisting in a Bolivian dry tropical forest. Species chronologies of ring-width indices were related to temperature, precipitation, drought indices and sea temperatures. A growth model was also used to forecast growth variability. C. microchaete and A. cardenasii presented similar year-to-year growth variability. Cool and wet conditions enhanced growth. Shorter droughts constrained more growth of C. microchaete and A. cardenasii, whilst longer droughts negatively impacted Z. tuberculosa. These different growth responses to climate and drought contribute to explain the coexistence of tree species in SDTFs. The growth patterns of the study species are valuable climate proxies for Bolivia. Forecasted warmer conditions after the 2050s will differently affect the growth variability of these species depending on their responses to climate and drought.

4. Drivers of the diversity of diatoms in an oligotrophic Andean stream

Abstract

An in situ experiment determined that the addition of ammonia N-NH4+, nitrate N-NO3– and phosphate P-PO43– to an oligotrophic Andean stream significantly affected diatom composition and diversity. Over a nine-month period, fertilized and non-fertilized sections of the stream were studied for their environmental characteristics and diatom composition. Nutrient concentrations were increased three times in a downstream section with respect to those occurring naturally upstream. Alpha diversity (Shannon-Wiener [H”] and Simpson [S] indices) were determined monthly. In the non-fertilized control section, diatom diversity was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) related to water flow and P and N concentrations. In the fertilized section diversity was associated to the enhanced ammonia and phosphorus. A redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that conductivity, water flow and nutrient concentrations contributed to the diatom assemblage composition (83% along the first two axes). Achnanthidium minutissimum, Cocconeis placentula, and Epithemia sorex occurrence was related to low phosphorus concentration. Epithemia adnata var. minor, Nitzschia dissipata, and Reimeria sinuata were associated with high P concentrations, high water flow and low conductivity Navicula rynchocephala, Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula capitatoradiata, and Melosira varians were associated with high P.

Abstract

Climate-growth relationships are strong in seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs). To better understand the ecological processes controlling these relationships we need to assess the long-term responses of wood anatomy and radial growth to year-to-year climate variability. We assessed how wood-anatomical traits (mean vessel area –MVA– and vessel density –VD–, percentage of conductive area –CA–, xylem-specific estimated hydraulic conductivity –Ks–) and growth responded to local climate (mean temperature, total precipitation, estimated moisture) variability and teleconnections (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) between 1970 and 2011 in two Fabaceae tree species (Centrolobium microchaete and Cenostigma pluviosum) coexisting in a Bolivian SDTF. We found that C. microchaete produced wider vessels and was more responsive to both local climate conditions and teleconnections than C. pluviosum. In C. microchaete VD positively responded to average temperature in the late-wet season and in the previous dry season, and CA and Ks were higher in years with warmer wet and previous early-dry seasons, as well as in years with higher PDO values. These responses were independent from ring-width variability only for C. microchaete. For C. pluviosum, vessel chronologies were more responsive to local temperature variability, and only MVA and CA positively and negatively responded to moisture in the early-dry and the previous dry seasons, respectively. Our results show that wood hydraulic structure in SDTFs is responsive to climate fluctuations. The combined study of ring width and wood anatomy allows having a more complete picture of the influence of climate on growth, particularly in species as C. microchaete which show low collinearity of tree-ring width and wood plasticity in response to climate variability.

Doi.: 10.7818/ECOS.2016.25-2.08 Neotropical dry forests (TDFs) are characterized by a dry season which allows some tree species forming annual rings. In TDFs the study of tree rings using dendrochronology involves their identification, dating and measurement. In this way, we gain a retrospective view of tree growth at a temporal scale in agreement with tree longevity. Having a good knowledge of wood anatomy and phenology is necessary to perform dendrochronological studies in TDFs. For instance, most angiosperm tree species which have been studied in TDFs from a dendrochronological point of view present ring boundaries characterized by a band of marginal parenchyma. The information recorded in tree rings has allowed (i) quantifying how growth of TDF trees responds to climatic variables (mainly precipitation) and determining if it is related to large scale atmospheric patterns (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) (dendroclimatology); (ii) reconstructing the dynamics of many TDFs (dendroecology) by improving our knowledge of tree ages and growth rates. Dendroecology will provide forest managers with objective tools to quantify and forecast cutting cycles, making the management of TDFs more sustainable.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-04-28 The seasonal climate drivers of the carbon cycle in tropical forests remain poorly known, although these forests account for more carbon assimilation and storage than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Based on a unique combination of seasonal pan-tropical data sets from 89 experimental sites (68 include aboveground wood productivity measurements and 35 litter productivity measurements), their associated canopy photosynthetic capacity (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) and climate, we ask how carbon assimilation and aboveground allocation are related to climate seasonality in tropical forests and how they interact in the seasonal carbon cycle. We found that canopy photosynthetic capacity seasonality responds positively to precipitation when rainfall is < 2000ĝ€-mmĝ€-yrĝ'1 (water-limited forests) and to radiation otherwise (light-limited forests). On the other hand, independent of climate limitations, wood productivity and litterfall are driven by seasonal variation in precipitation and evapotranspiration, respectively. Consequently, light-limited forests present an asynchronism between canopy photosynthetic capacity and wood productivity. First-order control by precipitation likely indicates a decrease in tropical forest productivity in a drier climate in water-limited forest, and in current light-limited forest with future rainfall < 2000ĝ€-mmĝ€-yrĝ'1. Abstract

The seasonal climate drivers of the carbon cycle in tropical forests remain poorly known, although these forests account for more carbon assimilation and storage than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Based on a unique combination of seasonal pan-tropical data sets from 89 experimental sites (68 include aboveground wood productivity measurements and 35 litter productivity measurements), their associate canopy photosynthetic capacity (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) and climate, we ask how carbon assimilation and aboveground allocation are related to climate seasonality in tropical forests and how they interact in the seasonal carbon cycle. We found that canopy photosynthetic capacity seasonality responds positively to precipitation when rainfall is < 2000 mm.yr−1 (water-limited forests) and to radiation otherwise (light-limited forests); on the other hand, independent of climate limitations, wood productivity and litterfall are driven by seasonal variation in precipitation and evapotranspiration respectively. Consequently, light-limited forests present an asynchronism between canopy photosynthetic capacity and wood productivity. Precipitation first-order control indicates an overall decrease in tropical forest productivity in a drier climate.

© 2015 Elsevier B.V. Assessing the effects of climate on leaf phenology and xylem development will improve our understanding of how wood formation and carbon uptake occur in tropical tree species. Wood formation depends on how tree stems enlarge, shrink or swell at multiple temporal scales. To address these issues we analyzed climate data, leaf phenology, xylogenesis and radial increment at hourly to monthly scales of ten tree species in two tropical dry forests with different drought seasonality and severity (the wet Tuluá site is located in Colombia and the dry INPA site is situated in Bolivia). Leaf flushing and radial growth occurred during the wet season at both sites, reflecting the influence of high precipitation, a positive water balance and low vapor pressure deficit on the development of new leaves and xylem cells. In Tuluá, the xylem growing season was associated with low air temperatures, while in INPA it was related to high air temperatures. At both sites, the high air temperatures registered throughout the day negatively affected radial-increment rates at hourly scales, probably by rising vapor pressure deficit and enhancing evapotranspiration rates. Tree species could face adverse dry conditions by growing in periods of the day when temperatures decrease and water loss due to evapotranspiration is reduced, particularly at dry INPA site. Stem shrinkage and swelling were observed at hourly to daily scales in all tree species, but most INPA species also registered strong reversible shrinkage at monthly scales. The strength of the positive association between leaf flushing and radial-increment rates was species-specific and it related to sapwood density. Thus, Cedrela fissilis, a pioneer deciduous species with low sapwood density showed the strongest associations between leaf flushing and radial-increment rates, whereas Acosmium cardenasii, a shade-tolerant deciduous species showed the reverse characteristic. Abstract

We analyzed the effects of climate and drought on radial growth using dendrochronology in seven deciduous tree species coexisting in a Bolivian tropical dry forest subjected to seasonal drought. Precipitation, temperature and a multiscalar drought index were related to tree-ring width data at different time-scales (from one month to 42 years). Precipitation affected positively tree growth in all species, mainly during the wet season, while temperature affected it negatively in five species. Tree growth responses to precipitation and temperature were species-specific and peaked at short-time scales, specifically from one to nine months. At inter-annual scales tree growth always responded positively to less dry conditions at short-time scales, particularly from two to seven months, and also at long-time scales from six to 30 years. Tree growth was mainly sensitive to multi-annual droughts and such sensitivity differed among species. Our findings suggest that tree species of the studied tropical dry forest are predominantly sensitive in terms of growth reduction to long-lasting droughts. Abstract

A seasonal period of water deficit characterizes tropical dry forests (TDFs). There, sympatric tree species exhibit a diversity of growth rates, functional traits, and responses to drought, suggesting that each species may possess different strategies to grow under different conditions of water availability. The evaluation of the long-term growth responses to changes in the soil water balance should provide an understanding of how and when coexisting tree species respond to water deficit in TDFs. Furthermore, such differential growth responses may be linked to functional traits related to water storage and conductance. We used dendrochronology and climate data to retrospectively assess how the radial growth of seven coexisting deciduous tree species responded to the seasonal soil water balance in a Bolivian TDF. Linear mixed-effects models were used to quantify the relationships between basal area increment and seasonal water balance. We related these relationships with wood density and sapwood production to assess if they affect the growth responses to climate. The growth of all species responded positively to water balance during the wet season, but such responses differed among species as a function of their wood density. For instance, species with a strong growth response to water availability averaged a low wood density which may facilitate the storage of water in the stem. By contrast, species with very dense wood were those whose growth was less sensitive to water availability. Coexisting tree species thus show differential growth responses to changes in soil water balance during the wet season.
