5. The Dynamics of the India‐Eurasia Collision: Faulted Viscous Continuum Models Constrained by High‐Resolution Sentinel‐1 InSAR and GNSS Velocities.

Abstract

The distribution and magnitude of forces driving lithospheric deformation in the India‐Eurasia collision zone have been debated over many decades. Here we test a two‐dimensional (2‐D) Thin Viscous Shell approach that has been adapted to explicitly account for displacement on major faults and investigate the impact of lateral variations in depth‐averaged lithospheric strength. We present a suite of dynamic models to explain the key features from new high‐resolution Sentinel‐1 Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar as well as Global Navigation Satellite System velocities. Comparisons between calculated and geodetically observed velocity and strain rate fields indicate: (a) internal buoyancy forces from Gravitational Potential Energy acting on a relatively weak region of highest topography (>2,000 m) contribute to dilatation of the high plateau and contraction on the margins; (b) a weak central Tibetan Plateau (∼1021 Pa s compared to far‐field depth‐averaged effective viscosity of at least 1022–1023 Pa s) is required to explain the observed long‐wavelength eastward velocity variation; (c) localized displacement on fault systems enables strain concentration and clockwise rotation around the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis. We discuss the tectonic implications for rheology of the lithosphere, distribution of geodetic strain, and partitioning of active faulting and seismicity. Plain Language Summary: The collision of the Indian Plate with Eurasia has created the Tibetan Plateau, one of the largest deforming regions in the continents. The mode of deformation has been a focus for heated debate and has inspired two contrasting tectonic models: (a) The deformation is localized on major faults separating "blocks" or (b) the strain is distributed throughout a "continuum." We approximate the India‐Eurasia collision by treating the continent as a thin viscous shell with regional variations in strength, explicitly accounting for displacements on selected major faults. We present a suite of models to explain the key features of new geodetic measurements from satellites. The best‐fit model involves a weak Tibetan Plateau, a particularly weaker central plateau, and four strong regions outside the plateau, and allows displacements on major faults. This represents the deformation field of the India‐Eurasia collision zone as a combination of continuous distributed deformation and focused strain on major faults. Abstract

Following earthquakes, faults are often observed to continue slipping aseismically. It has been proposed that this afterslip occurs on parts of the fault with rate-strengthening friction that are stressed by the main shock, but our understanding has been limited by a lack of immediate, high-resolution observations. Here we show that the behavior of afterslip following the 2014 South Napa earthquake in California varied over distances of only a few kilometers. This variability cannot be explained by coseismic stress changes alone. We present daily positions from continuous and survey GPS sites that we remeasured within 12 h of the main shock and surface displacements from the new Sentinel-1 radar mission. This unique geodetic data set constrains the distribution and evolution of coseismic and postseismic fault slip with exceptional resolution in space and time. We suggest that the observed heterogeneity in behavior is caused by lithological controls on the frictional properties of the fault plane.

Abstract

In the continents, the importance of earthquakes that occur away from major block‐bounding faults is still debated. The 21 May 2021 MW ∼ 7.4 Maduo earthquake occurred on a secondary fault away from previously‐identified major block boundaries. Here we use 7 years of Sentinel‐1 Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series (between October 2014 and November 2021) to determine the distribution of coseismic slip and early postseismic afterslip following the Maduo earthquake, and the preceding interseismic strain accumulation. We devised a 13‐segment 3‐D fault geometry constrained by the SAR range offsets and the distribution of relocated aftershocks and used a Bayesian method incorporating von Karman regularization to solve for coseismic slip and afterslip models. We also used teleseismic waveforms as a standalone inversion to show the rupture evolution in space and time during the earthquake, finding that it propagates bilaterally with three notable rupture episodes. Our preferred coseismic self‐similar slip model shows a moderate shallow slip deficit, with the majority of moment release occurring in the depth interval of 1–10 km. The coseismic slip deficit is taken up in part by afterslip at shallow (<4 km) depths that grows linearly with time during the first ∼6 months, and at >10 km depths where afterslip grows logarithmically with time. We suggest that this heterogeneity is likely controlled by spatial variations in fault friction related to lithology. We discuss the implications for seismic hazard away from major tectonic block boundaries in light of our observations of the earthquake cycle on this intrablock fault. Plain Language Summary: Collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates has created the largest deforming region on the planet. Part of the resultant deformation is accommodated by movements on block‐bounding faults where major earthquakes usually occur. A large earthquake ruptured a slow‐moving fault away from the major pre‐identified block boundaries on 21 May 2021. We used 7 years of satellite radar images to measure the deformation that occurred before, during, and after the earthquake. We also used seismic observations to investigate the temporal evolution of the earthquake rupture. Our model agrees with the results from field mapping. Postseismic deformation at shallow and deep depths shows different temporally varying behavior, which is likely caused by the frictional properties of the fault associated with different physical characteristics of rocks. The causative fault was accumulating relatively subtle strain before the earthquake. We observed the strain being localized on one of the faults in the block interior, highlighting elevated earthquake potential in the future. Abstract

For the past five years, the 2-satellite Sentinel-1 constellation has provided abundant and useful Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, which have the potential to reveal global ground surface deformation at high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, for most users, fully exploiting the large amount of associated data is challenging, especially over wide areas. To help address this challenge, we have developed LiCSBAS, an open-source SAR interferometry (InSAR) time series analysis package that integrates with the automated Sentinel-1 InSAR processor (LiCSAR). LiCSBAS utilizes freely available LiCSAR products, and users can save processing time and disk space while obtaining the results of InSAR time series analysis. In the LiCSBAS processing scheme, interferograms with many unwrapping errors are automatically identified by loop closure and removed. Reliable time series and velocities are derived with the aid of masking using several noise indices. The easy implementation of atmospheric corrections to reduce noise is achieved with the Generic Atmospheric Correction Online Service for InSAR (GACOS). Abstract

This paper provides a compact overview of Harmony, an Earth Explorer 10 mission candidate dedicated to the observation of dynamic deformations of ice, solid earth and ocean surfaces. Harmony consists of two receive-only small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites using Sentinel-1 as illuminator, which will alternate close formation phases, dedicated to single-pass cross-track interferometry, with StereoSAR phases dedicated to the study of ocean surface motion and 3-D land surface deformations. In addition the payload includes a compact Thermal Infrared (TIR) camera.

Abstract

Trabajo presentado en la European Geosciences Union General Assembly, celebrada en Viena (Austria), del 23 al 28 de abril de 2017, EPOS, the European Plate Observing System, is a long-term plan to facilitate the integrated use of data, data products, software and services, available from distributed Research Infrastructures (RI), for solid Earth science in Europe. Indeed, EPOS integrates a large number of existing European RIs belonging to several fields of the Earth science, from seismology to geodesy, near fault and volcanic observatories as well as anthropogenic hazards. The EPOS vision is that the integration of the existing national and trans-national research infrastructures will increase access and use of the multidisciplinary data recorded by the solid Earth monitoring networks, acquired in laboratory experiments and/or produced by computational simulations. The establishment of EPOS will foster the interoperability of products and services in the Earth science field to a worldwide community of users. Accordingly, the EPOS aim is to integrate the diverse and advanced European Research Infrastructures for solid Earth science, and build on new e-science opportunities to monitor and understand the dynamic and complex solid-Earth System. One of the EPOS Thematic Core Services (TCS), referred to as Satellite Data, aims at developing, implementing and deploying advanced satellite data products and services, mainly based on Copernicus data (namely Sentinel acquisitions), for the Earth science community. This work intends to present the technological enhancements, fostered by EPOS, to deploy effective satellite services in a harmonized and integrated way. In particular, the Satellite Data TCS will deploy five services, EPOSAR, GDM, COMET, 3D-Def and MOD, which are mainly based on the exploitation of SAR data acquired by the Sentinel-1 constellation and designed to provide information on Earth surface displacements. In particular, the planned services will provide both advanced DInSAR products (deformation maps, velocity maps, deformation time series) and value-added measurements (source model, 3D displacement maps, seismic hazard maps). Moreover, the services will release both on-demand and systematic products. The latter will be generated and made available to the users on a continuous basis, by processing each Sentinel-1 data once acquired, over a defined number of areas of interest; while the former will allow users to select data, areas, and time period to carry out their own analyses via an on-line platform. The satellite components will be integrated within the EPOS infrastructure through a common and harmonized interface that will allow users to search, process and share remote sensing images and results. This gateway to the satellite services will be represented by the ESA- Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP), a new cloud-based platform for the satellite Earth Observations designed to support the scientific community in the understanding of high impact natural disasters. Satellite Data TCS will use GEP as the common interface toward the main EPOS portal to provide EPOS users not only with data products but also with relevant processing and visualisation software, thus allowing users to gather and process on a cloud-computing infrastructure large datasets without any need to download them locally

Abstract

There are three basic designs for protection of power systems. A fully rated system allows all the circuit breakers to operate independently giving reliable protection but at the cost of varying continuity of service. Selectively co-ordinated systems maximise continuity by isolating the fault at the nearest circuit breaker. This is the most expensive type of design. Series rated systems rely on the furthest breaker to protect the others. Continuity is less good than other designs but this is the cheapest method. All three systems give high levels of safety.

Abstract

Torfajökull is the largest silicic volcanic centre in Iceland lying at the intersection of the rift zone (MidAtlantic Ridge) and the transform zone that connects to Reykjanes peninsula. It erupts infrequently,with only two eruptions in the last 1200 years, the latest of which was over 5 centuries ago. Yet, itsactive tectonic setting, persistent high and low frequency seismicity, deformation and geothermalactivity within its large caldera (18x12 km diameter) indicate the continued presence of a long-lasting magma chamber. Here we speculate on possible geometry, size and depth of the Torfajökullmagma chamber by using radar interferometry (InSAR) and seismic interferometry (SI).Using InSAR time series analysis we detect a surface subsidence pattern at rates of up to ~13 mm yr-1in the SW region of Torfajökull ́s caldera, on-going since at least 1993. The subsidence rate isconstant in time, and perhaps due to a cooling magma chamber. The data can be fit reasonably wellusing a model of a NE-SW oriented spheroidal body at ~5 km depth. As the deflating area correlatesspatially with the area of geothermal activity, deflation may also be the surface response due to anactive hydrothermal circulation.To gain more insight into the geometry of Torfajökull’s magmatic system and rock properties of thesubsurface, we apply ambient noise seismic interferometry (SI) by cross-correlation of ambient noise.With this technique we can detect velocity variations, which can correspond to the edges of dikes ormolten magma bodies. Our tomographic results give reliable results of velocity variations within adepth range of 2 km to 7.5 km. We find high velocity zones that we interpret as old dike intrusions.Low velocity anomalies (>5%), which usually indicate the presence of warmer material, are locatedon the southeast and southwest part of the volcano, outside the volcano caldera.Finally we compare both InSAR and SI results. The hypothesis of a magma chamber under thesubsidence area detected by InSAR does not seem to fit the tomographic results, as the expectededges of a magma body modelled by InSAR are not clearly identified by the SI results. If there is anestablished magma chamber within Torfajökull caldera this is likely to be bellow 7km depth.

Abstract

Nyamulagira, located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the western branch of the East African rift, is Africa's most active volcano, with an average of one eruption every 3 years since 1938. Owing to the socio-economical context of that region, the volcano lacks ground-based geodetic measurements but has been monitored by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) since 1996. A combination of 3D Mixed Boundary Element Method and inverse modelling, taking into account topography and source interactions, is used to interpret InSAR ground displacements associated with eruptive activity in 1996, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010. These eruptions can be fitted by models incorporating dyke intrusions, and some (namely the 2006 and 2010 eruptions) require a magma reservoir beneath the summit caldera. We investigate inter-eruptive deformation with a multi-temporal InSAR approach. We propose the following magma plumbing system at Nyamulagira by integrating numerical deformation models with other available data: a deep reservoir (c. 25 km depth) feeds a shallower reservoir (c. 4 km depth); proximal eruptions are fed from the shallow reservoir through dykes while distal eruptions can be fed directly from the deep reservoir. A dyke-like conduit is also present beneath the upper southeastern flank of Nyamulagira.
