Whether it is in the ancient world, the media, or everyday conversations, men often disappear from the stories of harmful and irresponsible behaviors related to sexual activity and/or reproductive justice. Because of this deflection of attention away from men, the burden, accusations, and blame often remain with women. The convenient invisibility of men in these stories obscures their decisions, actions, and accountability. I aim to demonstrate what would happen if one could re-locate and re-place men back in these stories and ask for culpability. This chapter argues that (Catholic) men can construct a better response to reproductive justice by imagining men in genuinely reciprocal relationships. More specifically, it 1) places reproductive justice in its historical context; 2) considers how Catholic teachings can contribute to that conversation via Pope Francis’s Amoris Laetitia and “genuine reciprocity;” 3) employs an exercise of imagination that reveals double standards and provides men tools (i.e., contact hypothesis) to build empathy in that conversation, and 4) suggests larger intersectional implications and responses for the future.

Lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNFs), implying lignin-containing cellulose fibers, maintain the properties of both lignin and cellulose, which are hydrophobic and hydrophilic, respectively. The presence of hydrophobic lignin in LCNFs is expected to be an economical and attractive option that can improve the thermal and mechanical properties of polymers. Thus, this study was conducted to produce lignin-rich LCNFs from sugar-rich waste obtained from rice husks after acidic pretreatment. The LCNFs were produced from the lignin-rich solid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, which were then incorporated as an additive into a chitosan-based film. The variations in lignin content in the range of approximately 50.6%–66.8% in differently obtained LCNFs gave significantly different optical strengths and mechanical properties. These controllable processes may allow for customized film formation. Additionally, the glucose-rich liquid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis were used as a substrate for ethanol fermentation to achieve total utilization of rice husk biomass waste. In conclusion, the lignin-rich biomass fraction holds promise as a suitable material for chitosan-LCNF film and has the potential to increase the economic feasibility of the biomaterial industry.

The residue characteristics, processing effects of washing and drying, and dietary risks of chlorantraniliprole (CAP) and flubendiamide (FBD) to Koreans were investigated using Aster scaber in a greenhouse. Following foliar application, the initial FBD residues were 3–10 times higher than those of CAP. However, the biological half-lives were similar at 6.0–8.3 and 6.8–9.9 days for CAP and FBD, respectively. The pre-harvest residue limits (PHRLs) 7 days before harvest, derived from the dissipation rates and maximum residue limits, were 12.2 and 33.2 mg/kg for CAP and FBD, respectively. For the removal of CAP and FBD from A. scaber, washing with a neutral detergent was more effective than running under or dipping in tap water (86.5 % and 66.2 %, respectively). Processing factors in fields I and II were 2.6 and 5.1 for CAP and 2.0 and 5.7 for FBD, respectively. Drying removal efficiencies in fields I and II averaged 46.4 % and 52.3 % for CAP and 48.4 % and 49.2 % for FBD, respectively. Chronic health risk assessments indicated that dietary exposure to CAP and FBD is acceptable for Korean health.

Purpose: Patients with cancer have a high risk of depression. However, a few studies have assessed differences in the incidence of depression among patients with prostate cancer (PC) based on whether they received radiotherapy (RTx) or surgical treatment. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Sharing Service database regarding the entire Korean adult population with PC (n=210,924) between 2007 and 2017. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of depression associated with treatment were estimated using propensity score-matched Cox proportional hazards models and Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Results: Our final cohort comprised 9,456 patients with PC; of which, 8,050 men underwent surgery. During a mean followup duration of 7.1 years, 503 (5.3%) patients were newly diagnosed with depression. A significant difference in the incidence of depression was noted between the RTx and surgery groups (RTx vs. surgery: 5.55% vs. 5.28%; p=0.011) in the unmatched cohort. The Korea retrospective dosimetry (KREDOS)–electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) group undertook an intercomparison investigation utilizing hydroxyapatite. This analysis involved four institutions: the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, Korean Association for Radiation Application, and Radiation Health Institute of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power. Following the irradiation of the hydroxyapatite sample, the recorded build-up was analyzed. To validate the reliability of the EPR dosimetry findings and enhance its operational performance, a hydroxyapatite dose–response curve was plotted and dosimetry was performed for a blind sample. The proficiency of each laboratory was assessed by employing an interlaboratory comparison methodology. This involved a comparative analysis of the measurement results by calculating the relative bias, z-score, and En value. The results submitted by the participating laboratories demonstrated satisfactory ratings for doses of 1.006, 3.999, and 6.993 Gy. Following the second intercomparison, efforts to optimize their hydroxyapatite-EPR dosimetry systems are underway in the participating laboratories. The current assessment of hydroxyapatite dose yielded the foundational data required to establish the parameters of dental dosimetry. In future, the third intercomparison experiment will be conducted for exploring other materials.

This study presents a large-scale green approach for synthesizing ultralong tellurium nanowires with diameters around 13 nm using a solution-based method. By adjusting key synthesis parameters such as the surfactant concentration, temperature, and reaction duration, we achieved high-quality, ultralong Te NWs. These nanowires exhibit properties suitable for use in semiconductor applications, particularly when employed as channel materials in thin-film transistors, displaying a pronounced gate effect with a high switch of up to 104 and a mobility of 0.9 cm2 V−1s−1. This study underscores the potential of solvent-based methods in synthesizing large-scale ultralong Te NWs as a critical resource for future sustainable nanoelectronic devices.

As the adoption of large-scale model-based AI grows, the field of robotics is undergoing significant changes. The emergence of cloud robotics, where advanced tasks are offloaded to fog or cloud servers, is gaining attention. However, the widely used Robot Operating System (ROS) does not support communication between robot software across different networks. This paper introduces ROS Gateway, a middleware designed to improve the usability and extend the communication range of ROS in multi-network environments, which is important for processing sensor data in cloud robotics. We detail its structure, protocols, and algorithms, highlighting improvements over traditional ROS configurations. The ROS Gateway efficiently handles high-volume data from advanced sensors such as depth cameras and LiDAR, ensuring reliable transmission. Based on the rosbridge protocol and implemented in Python 3, ROS Gateway is compatible with rosbridge-based tools and runs on both x86 and ARM-based Linux environments. Our experiments show that the ROS Gateway significantly improves performance metrics such as topic rate and delay compared to standard ROS setups. We also provide predictive formulas for topic receive rates to guide the design and deployment of robotic applications using ROS Gateway, supporting performance estimation and system optimization. These enhancements are essential for developing responsive and intelligent robotic systems in dynamic environments.

Human perceptual ability can be improved by perceptual learning through repeated exposure or training. Perceptual learning studies have focused on achieving accurate perception of stimuli by improving perceptual sensitivity. However, eliminating illusions can also be one of the ways of accurate perception. To determine whether the illusion can be attenuated by perceptual learning, the current study used a tilt illusion where the orientation of the grating presented in the center (central grating) was misperceived because of the orientation of the grating presented in the periphery (surrounding grating). In Experiment 1, participants were trained either in the illusion training condition, in which they trained with illusory stimuli presenting both surrounding and central gratings together, or in the control training condition, where only the central grating was presented. The results confirmed that the tilt illusion was reduced only in the illusion training condition. Experiment 2 tested the transfer effect of learning, which is not often observed in perceptual learning. During training, the orientation of the surrounding grating was fixed to see whether the elimination of the illusion also occurred in the surrounding grating with an orientation that was not used during training. A decrease in the illusion was found only in the case of a surrounding grating with trained orientations, and not in the case of surrounding gratings with untrained orientations. These results suggest that the reduction in tilt illusion through training is due to perceptual learning.

Organophosphates are widely used in the livestock industry. In this study, we developed a method for detecting 27 organophosphate insecticides in animal-derived foods, including beef, pork, chicken, milk, and eggs, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. A modified QuEChERS method was optimized for sample pretreatment. A mixture of acetonitrile and acetone was used as the extraction solvent, and MgSO4 and NaCl were used as salts. Among the five different dispersive solid-phase extraction systems, MgSO4, primary secondary amines, and C18 were selected for purification because they had the highest recovery rates and least matrix effects. The matrix-dependent limit of quantitation was 0.0005–0.005 mg/kg, and the correlation coefficient of the matrix-matched calibration curve was >0.99, which was acceptable for quantifying residues below 0.01 mg/kg—the default maximum residue limit in a positive list system. The recovery efficiencies ranged from 71.9 to 110.5%, with standard deviations ranging from 0.2% to 12.5%, satisfying the SANTE guidelines. The established analytical method was used to monitor organophosphates in animal-derived foods obtained from a local market, and no pesticides were detected. With respect to industry standards, our proposed method is recommended for practical organophosphate detection in animal-derived foods.

To prevent pesticides from exceeding maximum residue limits (MRLs) in crops during export and shipment, it is necessary to manage residue levels during the pre-harvest stages. Therefore, the Republic of Korea establishes pre-harvest residue limits (PHRLs) per crop and pesticide. This study was conducted to set PHRLs for penthiopyrad and tebufenpyrad in angelica leaves, where the exceedance rates of MRLs are expected to be high. The LOQ of the analytical method used was 0.01 mg/kg and it demonstrated good linearity, with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 or higher within the quantitation range of 0.005 to 0.5 mg/kg. The recovery and storage stability accuracy values were in the range of 94.5–111.1%, within the acceptable range (70–120%, RSD ≤ 20%). The matrix effect for both pesticides was in the medium-to-strong range, and it did not significantly impact the quantitative results as a matrix-matched calibration method was employed. Using the validated method, residue concentrations of penthiopyrad 20 (%) EC and tebufenpyrad 10 (%) EC were analyzed. Both pesticides exhibited a decreasing residue trend over time. In Fields 1–3 and their integrated results, the biological half-life was within 2.6–4.0 days for penthiopyrad and 3.0–4.2 days for tebufenpyrad. The minimum value of the regression coefficient in the dissipation curve regression equation was selected as the dissipation constant. The selected dissipation constants for penthiopyrad in Fields 1–3 and their integration were 0.1221, 0.2081, 0.2162, and 0.1960. For tebufenpyrad, the dissipation constants were 0.1451, 0.0960, 0.1725, and 0.1600, respectively. The dissipation constant was used to calculate PHRL per field. Following the principles of the PHRL proposal process, residue levels (%) on PHI dates relative to MRLs were calculated, and fields for proposing PHRLs were selected. For penthiopyrad, since the residue level (%) was less than 20%, the PHRL for Field 3 with the largest dissipation constant was proposed. For tebufenpyrad, as the residue level (%) exceeded 80%, the PHRL proposal could not established. It is deemed necessary to reassess the MRL and ‘guidelines for safe use’ for tebufenpyrad in angelica leaves.

Purpose: Recent studies have highlighted increasing infectious complications due to fluoroquinolone (FQ)-resistant organisms in men undergoing transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUSPB). This study investigated whether fosfomycin (FM)-based antibiotic prophylaxis reduces infections after TRUSPB and identified risk factors for infective complications. Materials and Methods: A multicenter study was conducted in the Republic of Korea from January 2018 to December 2021. Patients undergoing prostate biopsy with FQ or FM-based prophylaxis were included. The primary outcome was the post-biopsy infectious complication rate after FQ (group 1) or FM-based antibiotic prophylaxis with FM alone (group 2) or FQ and FM (group 3). Risk factors for infectious complications after TRUSPB were secondary outcomes. Results: Patients (n=2,595) undergoing prostate biopsy were divided into three groups according to the type of prophylactic antibiotics. Group 1 (n=417) received FQ before TRUSPB. Group 2 (n=795) received FM only and group 3 (n=1,383) received FM and FQ before TRUSPB. The overall post-biopsy infectious complication rate was 1.27%. The infectious complication rates were 2.4%, 1.9%, and 0.5% in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively (p=0.002). In multivariable analysis, predictors of post-biopsy infectious complications included an association with health care utilization (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 4.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.74–12.4; p=0.002) and combination antibiotic prophylaxis (FQ and FM) (adjusted OR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.09–0.69; p=0.007). Conclusions: In comparison with monotherapy with FM or FQ, combination antibiotic prophylaxis (FQ and FM) showed a lower rate of infectious complications after TRUSPB. Utilization of health care was an independent risk factor for infectious complications after TRUSPB.

Abstract Human sterile α motif and HD domain-containing protein 1 (SAMHD1) has deoxyribonucleoside triphosphohydrolase (dNTPase) activity that allows it to defend against human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) infections and regulate the cell cycle. Although SAMHD1 mutations have been identified in various cancer types, their role in cancer is unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the oncogenic role of SAMHD1 in human clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), particularly as a core molecule promoting cancer cell migration. We found that SAMHD1 participated in endocytosis and lamellipodia formation. Mechanistically, SAMHD1 contributed to the formation of the endosomal complex by binding to cortactin. Thereafter, SAMHD1-stimulated endosomal focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling activated Rac1, which promoted lamellipodia formation on the plasma membrane and enhanced the motility of ccRCC cells. Finally, we observed a strong correlation between SAMHD1 expression and the activation of FAK and cortactin in tumor tissues obtained from patients with ccRCC. In brief, these findings reveal that SAMHD1 is an oncogene that plays a pivotal role in ccRCC cell migration through the endosomal FAK-Rac1 signaling pathway.

The burgeoning interest in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and the widespread adoption of in-vehicle amenities like infotainment have spurred a heightened fascination with vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). Multi-hop routing protocols are pivotal in actualizing these in-vehicle services, such as infotainment, wirelessly. This study presents a novel protocol called multiple junction-based traffic-aware routing (MJTAR) for VANET vehicles operating in urban environments. MJTAR represents an advancement over the improved greedy traffic-aware routing (GyTAR) protocol. MJTAR introduces a distributed mechanism capable of recognizing vehicle traffic and computing curve metric distances based on two-hop junctions. Additionally, it employs a technique to dynamically select the most optimal multiple junctions between source and destination using the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. We implemented the proposed protocol using the network simulator 3 (NS-3) and simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) simulators and conducted performance evaluations by comparing it with GSR and GyTAR. Our evaluation demonstrates that the proposed protocol surpasses GSR and GyTAR by over 20% in terms of packet delivery ratio, with the end-to-end delay reduced to less than 1.3 s on average.

Dear Editor, Pyoderma gangrenosum(PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis that causes the development of painful ulcers on the skin, initially starting with nodules or abscesses, and quickly progressing at the peripheral regions into ulcers.1 The exact cause is not yet known, and 20-30% of patients are said to experience a pathergy phenomenon in which lesions occur in the sites of previous trauma.2 In addition, pyoderma gangrenosum is accompanied by systemic diseases, such as Crohn's disease or inflammatory colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and hyperthyroidism.3 Although numerous reports indicate that pyoderma gangrenosum is associated with systemic diseases,4 case reports on the association of pyoderma gangrenosum with skin diseases, especially blistering disorders, are very rare. Abstract This study aimed to determine the transfer factor (TF) of methidathion for cucumber harvesters in greenhouses using the dermal exposure rates (DERs) and dislodgeable foliar residues (DFRs) measured simultaneously in my previous works. The DERs recalculated using the reference body surface area for the Korean adult males were 31.5–1281.1 μg/h, and the DFR values were 12.1–222.5 ng/cm2 over 7 d after application. A strong correlation between the DERs and DFRs was observed, with a regression coefficient of 0.9982. The TF for cucumber harvesters in greenhouses was determined to be 6020.4 cm2/h, which was five times higher than that proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additionally, based on TF value of methidathion, the reentry intervals (REIs) with or without personal protective equipment (PPE) were estimated for 82 pesticides registered on cucumber. The REIs with PPE, obtained from acceptable operator exposure levels and TF value, were less than 0 d, indicating the lowest risk possibility. However, REIs without PPE were estimated between 0.04 and 4.4 d for seven pesticides, including chlorothalonil, emamectin benzoate, flubendiamide, fluquinconazole, iminoctadine tris(albesilate), propineb, and pyridaben. In conclusion, cucumber harvesters should wear PPE for health safety when they reenter the greenhouse to harvest cucumbers following application of pesticides.

Objective Pseudarthrosis and adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) are 2 common complications after multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). We aim to identify the potential biomechanical factors contributing to pseudarthrosis and ASD following 3-level ACDF using a cervical spine finite element model (FEM). Methods A validated cervical spine FEM from C2 to C7 was used to study the biomechanical factors in cervical spine intervention. The FEM model was used to simulate a 3-level ACDF with intervertebral spacers and anterior cervical plating with screw fixation from C4 to C7. The model was then constrained at the inferior nodes of the T1 vertebra, and physiological loads were applied at the top vertebra. The pure moment load of 2 Nm was applied in flexion, extension, and lateral bending. A follower axial force of 75 N was applied to reproduce the weight of the cranium and muscle force, was applied using standard procedures. The motion-controlled hybrid protocol was utilized to comprehend the adjustments in the spinal biomechanics. Results Our cervical spine FEM demonstrated that the cranial adjacent level (C3–4) had significantly more increase in range of motion (ROM) (+90.38%) compared to the caudal adjacent level at C7–T1 (+70.18%) after C4–7 ACDF, indicating that the cranial adjacent level has more compensatory increase in ROM than the caudal adjacent level, potentially predisposing it to earlier ASD. Within the C4–7 ACDF construct, the C6–7 level had the least robust fixation during fixation compared to C4–5 and C5–6, as reflected by the smallest reduction in ROM compared to intact spine (-71.30% vs. -76.36% and -77.05%, respectively), which potentially predisposes the C6–7 level to higher risk of pseudarthrosis. Conclusion Biomechanical analysis of C4–7 ACDF construct using a validated cervical spine FEM indicated that the C3–4 has more compensatory increase in ROM compared to C7–T1, and C6–7 has the least robust fixation under physiological loads. These findings can help spine surgeons to predicate the areas with higher risks of pseudarthrosis and ASD, and thus developing corresponding strategies to mitigate these risks and provide appropriate preoperative counseling to patients.

Abstract Although nereistoxin insecticides (NIs) are banned for animal husbandry operations, they are still used because of their high insecticidal activities. Therefore, a reliable residue analysis method for the simultaneous detection of cartap, bensultap, thiocyclam, and nereistoxin in foods of animal origins, including beef, pork, chicken, milk, and eggs, was developed using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HILIC–LC–MS/MS). The NIs were extracted with an acidic cysteine and formate buffer solution and hydrolyzed to nereistoxin. The molarity and pH of the buffer were optimized at 20 mM and 3, respectively, to keep the pH of the extracts at 4–5. pH-dependent acid–base partitioning coupled with salting-out-assisted liquid–liquid extraction using acetonitrile was performed for purification and for the direct introduction of the extracts to LC. The optimal pH values were 5 and 9 for the acid–base partitioning. Nereistoxin quantitation was achieved with consistent column retention (RSD 106). The matrix-dependent method limit of quantitation was 2 μg nereistoxin/kg, and the calibration curve showed good linearity (R2 > 0.998). The recovery efficiencies were in the range of 89.2–109.9% with relative standard deviations less than 10%, and matrix effects did not exceed ± 10%, which satisfied the criteria outlined in the European SANTE/12682/2019 guidelines.

Intersectional approaches aim to uncover the multidimensionality of multiply burdened victimhood rather than a single-axis analysis. When intersected with Asian and Asian American postcolonial experiences and perspectives, intersectionality exposes the global reach and colonial origins of white imperialism and ideological, systemic, and mutational nature of white supremacist logic of dominance connected to global capitalism, neocolonialism, class-ism, ableism, caste-ism, racism, etc. While limited and inadequate by itself, there is a family resemblance of intersectional method in the Catholic theological and intellectual tradition that is inclusive of ordinary and marginalized voices and secular disciplines. For Catholic theologians and the church, then, intersectional approach can be instrumental in dismantling white supremacy within the church as an institution and people. Indeed, the intersectional nature of Jesus’ ministry, personhood, and location further solidifies the case for using intersectional theology for ecclesial and personal introspection, growth, and development.

A method for the simultaneous analysis of pesticide multiresidues in three root/rhizome-based herbal medicines (Cnidium officinale, Rehmannia glutinosa, and Paeonia lactiflora) was developed with GC-MS/MS. To determine the concentrations of pesticide residues, 5 g of dried samples were saturated with distilled water, extracted with 10 mL of 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile/ethyl acetate (7:3, v/v), and then partitioned using magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride. The organic layer was purified with Oasis PRiME HLB plus light, followed by a cleanup with dispersive solid-phase extraction containing alumina. The sample was then injected into GC-MS/MS (2 μL) using a pulsed injection mode at 15 psi and analyzed using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) modes. The limit of quantitation for the 296 target pesticides was within 0.002-0.05 mg/kg. Among them, 77.7-88.5% showed recoveries between 70% and 120% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ≤20% at fortified levels of 0.01, and 0.05 mg/kg. The analytical method was successfully applied to real herbal samples obtained from commercial markets, and 10 pesticides were quantitatively determined from these samples.

Escherichia coli uses manganese [Mn(II)] as an essential trace element; thus, it has a genetic system that regulates cellular Mn(II) levels. Several genes in the mnt-operon of E. coli respond to intercellular Mn(II) levels, and transcription is regulated by a transcription factor (MntR) that interacts with Mn(II). This study aimed to develop Mn(II)-sensing biosensors based on mnt-operon genetic systems. Additionally, the properties of biosensors developed based on the promoter regions of mntS, mntH, and mntP were investigated. MntR represses the transcription of MntS and MntH after binding with Mn(II), while it induces MntP transcription. Thus, Mn(II) biosensors that decrease and increase signals could be obtained by fusing the promoter regions of mntS/mntH and mntP, with egfp encoding an enhanced green fluorescent protein. However, only the biosensor-based mntS:egfp responded to Mn(II) exposure. Further, E. coli harboring PmntS:egfp showed a concentration-dependent decrease in fluorescence signals. To enhance the sensitivity of the biosensor toward Mn(II), E. coli containing a deleted MntP gene that encodes Mn(II) exporter, was used as a host cell for biosensor development. The sensitivity toward Mn(II) increased by two times on using E. coli-mntP, and the biosensor could quantify 0.01–10 μM of Mn(II). Further, the applicability of Mn(II) in artificially contaminated water samples was quantified and showed >95% accuracy. The newly developed Mn(II) biosensors could detect and quantify the residual Mn(II) from mancozeb in soil samples, with the quantification accuracy being approximately 90%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Mn (II)-specific bacterial cell-based biosensor that serves as a valuable tool for monitoring and assessing the risks of Mn(II) in environmental systems.

Prurigo pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory skin disease characterized by an unexpected onset of diffuse erythematous papules and macules usually on the chest, neck, and back. These generally resolve, leaving reticular hyperpigmentation. Rarely, vesicular or bullous forms have been reported. We present a case of exfoliative vesiculobullous prurigo pigmentosa in a 13-year-old boy. He presented with symmetrical eruption of papules and vesicles on his back, neck, and chest in the last 10 days, causing pruritis and prickling sensation. Within a few days, the bullous lesions and all affected areas of the skin showed exfoliation. Histological study and clinical findings indicated the condition to be vesiculobullous prurigo pigmentosa with exfoliation. Treatment with doxycycline 200 mg/day and topical tacrolimus ointment showed a good response. The lesions resolved, leaving a light-brown reticulated hyperpigmentation. In conclusion, this was a case of exfoliative vesiculobullous prurigo pigmentosa in an adolescent man successfully treated with doxycycline and topical tacrolimus as an effective and safe treatment option.

The comprehensive and accurate assessment of the indoor air quality (IAQ) in large spaces, such as offices or multipurpose facilities, is essential for IAQ management. It is widely recognized that various IAQ factors affect the well-being, health, and productivity of indoor occupants. In indoor environments, it is important to assess the IAQ in places where it is difficult to install sensors due to space constraints. Spatial interpolation is a technique that uses sample values of known points to predict the values of other unknown points. Unlike in outdoor environments, spatial interpolation is difficult in large indoor spaces due to various constraints, such as being separated into rooms by walls or having facilities such as air conditioners or heaters installed. Therefore, it is necessary to identify independent or related regions in indoor spaces and to utilize them for spatial interpolation. In this paper, we propose a spatial interpolation technique that groups points with similar characteristics in indoor spaces and utilizes the characteristics of these groups for spatial interpolation. We integrated the IAQ data collected from multiple locations within an office space and subsequently conducted a comparative experiment to assess the accuracy of our proposed method in comparison to commonly used approaches, such as inverse distance weighting (IDW), kriging, natural neighbor interpolation, and the radial basis function (RBF). Additionally, we performed experiments using the publicly available Intel Lab dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed scheme outperformed the existing methods. The experimental results show that the proposed method was able to obtain better predictions by reflecting the characteristics of regions with similar characteristics within the indoor space.

Abstract Background Pulmonary artery catheter insertion is a routine practice in high-risk patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, pulmonary artery catheter insertion is associated with numerous complications that can be devastating to the patient. Incorrect placement is an overlooked complication with few case reports to date. Case presentation An 18-year-old male patient underwent elective mitral valve replacement due to severe mitral valve regurgitation. The patient had a history of synovial sarcoma, and Hickman catheter had been inserted in the right internal jugular vein for systemic chemotherapy. We made multiple attempts to position the pulmonary artery catheter in the correct position but failed. A chest radiography revealed that the pulmonary artery catheter was bent and pointed in the cephalad direction. Removal of the pulmonary artery catheter was successful, and the patient was discharged 10 days after the surgery without complications. Conclusions To prevent misplacement of the PAC, clinicians should be aware of multiple risk factors in difficult PAC placement, and be prepared to utilize adjunctive methods, such as TEE and fluoroscopy.

Study Design The study examined and compared four artificial cervical disks using validated finite element models. Purpose To compare and contrast the biomechanical behavior of four artificial cervical disks by determining the external (range of motion) and internal (facet force and intradiscal pressure) responses following cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and to elucidate any device design effects on cervical biomechanics. Overview of Literature Despite CDA’s increasing popularity most studies compare the CDA procedure with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. There is little comparative evaluation of different artificial disks and, therefore, little understanding of how varying disk designs may influence spinal biomechanics. Methods A validated C2–T1 finite element model was subjected to flexion-extension. CDAs were simulated at the C5–C6 level with the Secure-C, Mobi-C, Prestige LP, and Prodisc C prosthetic disks. We used a hybrid loading protocol to apply sagittal moments. Normalized motions at the index and adjacent levels, and intradiscal pressures and facet column loads were also obtained. Results The ranges of motion at the index level increased after CDA. The Mobi-C prosthesis demonstrated the highest amount of flexion, followed by the Secure-C, Prestige LP, and Prodisc C. The Secure-C demonstrated the highest amount of extension, followed by the Mobi-C, Prodisc C, and Prestige LP. The motion decreased at the rostral and caudal adjacent levels. Facet forces increased at the index level and decreased at the rostral and caudal adjacent levels following CDA. Intradiscal pressures decreased at the adjacent levels for the Mobi-C, Secure-C, and Prodisc C. Conversely, the use of the Prestige LP increased intradiscal pressure at both adjacent levels. Conclusions While all artificial disks were useful in restoring the index level motion, the Secure-C and Mobi-C translating abilities allowed for lower intradiscal pressures at the adjacent segments and may be the driving mechanism for minimizing adjacent segment degenerative arthritic changes. The facet joint integrity should also be considered in the clinical decision-making process for CDA selection.

While surgical resection is the gold standard treatment for solid tumors, cancer recurrence after surgery is common. Immunosurveillance of remnant tumor cells is an important protective mechanism. Therefore, maintenance of anti-tumor cell activity and proper levels of inflammatory mediators is crucial. An increasing body of evidence suggests that surgery itself and perioperative interventions could affect these pathophysiological responses. Various factors, such as the extent of tissue injury, perioperative medications such as anesthetics and analgesics, and perioperative management including transfusions and methods of mechanical ventilation, modulate the inflammatory response in lung cancer surgery. This narrative review summarizes the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in cancer recurrence after surgery and perioperative management related to cancer recurrence after lung cancer surgery.

Abstract Background Because of the indiscriminate use of opioids during the perioperative period, opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) has been increasingly required. Nevertheless, the studies on the detailed techniques and effects of OFA are not sufficient. The Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40) questionnaire is a validated assessment tool for measuring recovery from general anesthesia. However, no study has used the QoR-40 to determine if OFA leads to better recovery than standard general anesthesia. Therefore, we aim to perform this study to determine the effects of OFA using dexmedetomidine and lidocaine on the quality of recovery as well as the various postoperative outcomes. Methods The participants (n = 78) will be allocated to one of the two groups; the study group will receive bolus and infusion of dexmedetomidine and lidocaine, and the control group will receive remifentanil infusion during general anesthesia for gynecological laparoscopy. The other processes including anesthetic and postoperative care will be performed similarly in the two groups. Intraoperative hemodynamic, anesthetic, and nociceptive variables will be recorded. Postoperative outcomes such as QoR-40, pain severity, and opioid-related side effects will be assessed. Additionally, an ancillary cytokine study (inflammatory cytokine, stress hormone, and reactive oxygen species) will be performed during the study period. Discussion This will be the first study to determine the effect of OFA, using the combination of dexmedetomidine and lidocaine, on the quality of recovery after gynecological laparoscopy compared with standard general anesthesia using remifentanil. Unintentional pesticide contamination in rotational crops, often caused by soil contamination from pesticide use in the preceding crops, is a major concern in a positive list system. The residue and dissipation pattern of fluopyram in soil and scallions were investigated to evaluate the uptake of fluopyram from the soil by scallions. In addition, the management concentration in soil (MCsoil) was calculated based on bioconcentration factors (BCFs) and the maximum residue limit (0.2 mg/kg) in leaf-and-stem vegetables. In a field experiment, plots in two different trials, A and B, were treated with 0.06 g fluopyram/m2 and maintained for 30 days according to OECD guidelines. Scallion seedlings were cultivated for 48 days. Soil samples were taken at three different time points: DAP (Days after planting) 0, 34, and 48. Scallion samples were collected at five different time points: DAP 20, 27, 34, 41, and 48. The initial amounts of fluopyram in soil at DAP 0 were 0.94 ± 0.03 and 0.96 ± 0.04 mg/kg in trials A and B, respectively. The half-life of fluopyram in the soil was 87–231 days. Fluopyram uptake by the roots increased over time, but fluopyram residue in the scallions decreased due to the dilution effect caused by an increase in plant weight. The residues in the scallions at DAP 48 were 0.22 ± 0.01 and 0.15 ± 0.01 mg/kg in trials A and B, respectively. The BCFs of scallions for fluopyram were 0.21–0.24 (trial A) and 0.14–0.18 (trial B). The MCsoil was proposed as 0.8 mg/kg, and may be utilized as a safe management guideline for precautionary practices to cultivate safe rotational crops.

The matrix effect refers to the change in the analytical signal caused by the matrix in which the sample is contained, as well as the impurities that are co-eluted with the target analyte. In crop sample analysis using LC–MS/MS, the matrix effect can affect the quantification results. Chinese chives are likely to exhibit a strong matrix effect when co-extracted with bifenthrin and butachlor due to the presence of phytochemicals and chlorophyll. A novel analytical method was developed to reduce the matrix effects of bifenthrin and butachlor to a negligible level in Chinese chives. The established method had a limit of quantitation of 0.005 mg/kg and correlation coefficients greater than 0.999 within the range of 0.005–0.5 mg/kg. Matrix effects were found to be negligible, with values ranging from −18.8% to 7.2% in four different sources of chives and two leafy vegetables. Compared to conventional analytical methods for the LOQ and matrix effect, the established method demonstrated improved performances. The analytical method was further applied in a residual study in chive fields. The active ingredient of butachlor 5 granule (GR) was not detected after soil admixture application, while that of bifenthrin 1 emulsifiable concentrate (EC) showed a range from 1.002 to 0.087 mg/kg after foliar spraying. The dissipation rate constant (k) of bifenthrin was determined to be 0.115, thus its half-life was calculated to be 6.0 days. From the results, PHI and safety use standards of both pesticides were suggested. The developed analytical method can be applied to accurately determine bifenthrin and butachlor residues in Chinese chives and provides a foundation for further research on the fate and behavior of these pesticides in the environment.

Endosulfan is an endocrine disruptor that negatively affects the human central nervous system. Although perennial root vegetable crops have high risks of endosulfan absorption and transfer in soil, safety management studies addressing this problem are lacking. We evaluated endosulfan absorption and transition, as well as plant growth in ginseng cultivation soil, and developed a safety management method for field application. Total endosulfan residual concentrations in the soil and biochar 0.1–1.0% treatment groups were 52–73% after 532 d of spraying, and there was no reduction effect owing to biochar treatment. However, the endosulfan sulfate conversion rate decreased by 21.6–47.1% as the biochar amount increased. Further, there was a 47–95% reduction in the absorption and migration of endosulfan into ginseng in the biochar treatment compared to the control, demonstrating a reduction effect (p < 0.05). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate end-of-life resource utilization and costs for prostate cancer patients during the last year of life in Korea. Materials and Methods: The study used the National Health Information Database (NHIS-2017-4-031) of the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Healthcare claim data for the years 2002 through 2015 were collected from the Korean National Health Insurance System. Among 83,173 prostate cancer patients, we enrolled 18,419 after excluding 1,082 who never claimed for the last year of life. Results: From 2006 to 2015, there was a 3.2-fold increase the total number of prostate cancer decedents. The average cost of care during the last year of life increased over the 10-year period, from 14,420,000 Korean won to 20,300,000 Korean won, regardless of survival time. The cost of major treatments and medications, other than analgesics, was relatively high. Radiologic tests, opioids, pain control, and rehabilitation costs were relatively low. Multiple regression analysis identified age and living in rural area as negatively associated with prostate cancer care costs, whereas income level and a higher number of comorbidities were positively associated. Conclusions: Expenditure of prostate cancer care during the last year of life varied according to patient characteristics. Average costs increased every year. However, the results suggest underutilization of support services, likely due to lack of alternative accommodation for terminal prostate cancer patients. Further examination of patterns of utilization of healthcare resources will allow policymakers to take a better approach to reducing the burden of prostate cancer care.

Abstract Background Previous studies have reported the efficacy and safety of intravenous (IV) iron therapy during the perioperative period as an alternative and adjunct to allogeneic blood transfusion. Preemptive IV iron therapy provides noninferior hemoglobin levels on postoperative day (POD) 1 compared to autologous whole blood therapy (AWBT) in healthy patients who had undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Methods This was a prospective, patient-randomized, noninferiority trial. After excluding 2 patients, 64 patients were divided into two groups: the IV iron therapy group (patients received IV iron infusion 4 weeks before surgery; n = 32) and the AWBT group (2 units of autologous whole blood were collected 4 and 2 weeks before surgery; n = 32). The primary outcome was hemoglobin level on POD 1 and the prespecified noninferiority limit was − 1 g/dL. Results Baseline data were comparable, including hemoglobin and iron levels, between the two groups. Immediately before surgery, the levels of hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin were higher in the IV iron group than in the AWBT group. The mean treatment difference (iron group—whole blood group) in hemoglobin level on POD 1 between the two groups was 0.09 (95% CI = − 0.83 to 1.0). As the lower limit of the 95% CI (− 0.83) was higher than the prespecified noninferiority margin (δ = − 1), noninferiority was established. On POD 2, the hemoglobin level became lower in the iron group, which eventually led to greater requirement of allogeneic blood transfusion compared to the whole blood group. However, the iron group did not require allogeneic blood transfusion during or early after surgery, and the whole blood group showed continuously higher incidence of overt iron deficiency compared to the iron group. Conclusion As collection of autologous whole blood caused overt iron loss and anemia before surgery and intraoperative transfusion of whole blood was not able to prevent the occurrence of persistent iron deficiency after surgery, IV iron therapy was found to have potential benefits for iron homeostasis and subsequent erythropoiesis in healthy patients early after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. It was previously reported that a nanoparticle made of ultra pH‐sensitive peptides (pH‐NP) undergoes self‐dissolution in moderately acidic (pH ≤ 6.9) condition that mimics the pH in extracellular tumor environment, leading to release of drug cargo molecules. Herein, it is demonstrated that this peptide‐based nanodelivery platform can be used to formulate poorly water‐soluble small molecules to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment. Indocyanine green (ICG) encapsulated in pH‐NP (ICG‐pH‐NP) significantly increases tumor‐specific accumulation compared with “free” ICG, leading to excellent in vivo optical imaging contrast. An investigational cancer drug, OTS964, formulated in pH‐NP (OTS‐pH‐NP), sensitizes the drug‐resistant triple‐negative breast cancer to chemotherapy (paclitaxel), resulting in a remarkable tumor regression, whereas OTS964 in standard formulation does not (P = 0.0004). The potential immunogenicity and bone marrow toxicity of this nanoparticle are further investigated by administering drug‐free pH‐NP at nanoparticle dose regimens, representing 1.5× and 4.5×, respectively, of which are used in the treatment (OTS‐pH‐NP) study. The data show that the pH‐NP is not immunogenic and is well‐tolerated. Taken together, self‐dissolution and the release of drug cargo in response to the tumor's acidic extracellular pH faciliates drug delivery when mediated by the pH‐NP nano platform, making it a promising, clinical translational delivery platform for enhancing cancer detection and treatment.

This paper presents the results of the first intercomparison exercise performed by the Korea retrospective dosimetry (KREDOS) working group using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The intercomparison employed the alanine dosimeter, which is commonly used as the standard dosimeter in EPR methods. Four laboratories participated in the dose assessment of blind samples, and one laboratory carried out irradiation of blind samples. Two types of alanine dosimeters (Bruker and Magnettech) with different geometries were used. Both dosimeters were blindly irradiated at three dose levels (0.60, 2.70, and 8.00 Gy) and four samples per dose were distributed to the participating laboratories. Assessments of blind doses by the laboratories were performed using their own measurement protocols. One laboratory did not participate in the measurements of Magnettech alanine dosimeter samples. Intercomparison results were analyzed by calculating the relative bias, En value, and z-score. The results reported by participating laboratories were overall satisfactory for doses of 2.70 and 8.00 Gy but were considerably overestimated with a relative bias range of 10–95% for 0.60 Gy, which is lower than the minimum detectable dose (MDD) of the alanine dosimeter. After the first intercomparison, participating laboratories are working to improve their alanine-EPR dosimetry systems through continuous meetings and are preparing a second intercomparison exercise for other materials.

Objectives: To determine the effect of oral administration of porcine placental extract (PPE) on the menopausal symptoms of Korean women. Materials and methods: This study was a multicenter, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. A hundred menopausal Korean women were randomly allocated either to the PPE 400 mg per day or the control group during 12 weeks of the study period. Menopausal symptoms were evaluated using the Kupperman Index (KMI). Results: The KMI decreased after 12 weeks in both groups; however, the difference in the changes was not statistically significant. Among overweight or obese women whose body mass index (BMI) was 23 kg/m2 or higher, the KMI decreased more significantly in the PPE group than placebo group after 12 weeks (−18.52 ± 9.09 vs −11.40 ± 10.68, P

Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast that can be found in pigeon droppings, hay, and dust. Primary cutaneous cryptococcosis (PCC) without systemic involvement is recognized as a distinct clinical condition and is rarely reported in immunocompetent patients. A 78-year-old woman with no history of other diseases except for hypertension presented with a painful diffuse erythematous plaque along with oozing on left forearm that had lasted for 7 weeks. She was treated with cefoperazone/sulbactam for 3 weeks under suspicion of bacterial cellulitis, although the lesions aggravated without any improvement. We performed bacterial and fungal cultures as well as incisional biopsy. The pathogen was identified as Cryptococcus neoformans following sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer gene. The patient was treated with fluconazole 400 mg/day for 3 months, and there was no evidence of recurrence after 3 months of follow-up.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the usefulness of natural killer cell activity (NKA) in diagnosing prostate cancer (PC). Materials and Methods The medical records of patients who underwent transrectal prostate biopsy (TRBx) at Korea University Ansan Hospital between May 2017 and December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. NKA levels were measured using NK Vue® Tubes (ATgen, Sungnam, Korea). All blood samples were obtained at 8 AM on the day of biopsy. Patients with other malignancies, chronic inflammatory conditions, high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level (>20ng/mL), or history of taking 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor or testosterone replacement therapy were excluded. Results A total of 102 patients who underwent TRBx for PC diagnosis were enrolled. Among them, 50 were diagnosed with PC. Significant differences in age and NKA level were observed between the PC and no-PC groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the optimal cut-off of NKA level for the prediction of PC was 500pg/dL, with a sensitivity of 68.0% and a specificity of 73.1%. In addition, NKA level (0.630) had the greatest area under the ROC curve compared to those for the ratio of total PSA to free PSA (0.597) and PSA density (0.578). Conclusions The results of this pilot study revealed that low NKA and high PSA levels were likely to be associated with a positive TRBx outcome. NKA detection was easy and improved the diagnostic accuracy of PC.

Aims and Objectives: The human spine degenerates with age. Intervertebral disc degeneration occurs in the cervical spine. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of degenerative disc diseases on the range of motion (ROM) of the human cervical spinal column using a validated finite-element model. Materials and Methods: The validated intact and healthy C2–T1 finite-element model simulated the cortical shell, cancellous core, posterior elements of the vertebrae, and spinal ligaments (longitudinal, capsular, spinous and ligamentum flava, and nucleus and annulus of the discs). Three different stages of the disc disease, that is, mild, moderate, and severe, were simulated at the C5–C6, C6–C7, and C5–C6–C7 discs, respectively, and they were termed as upper single level, lower single level, and bi-level (BL) models, respectively. The material properties and geometry of the disc(s) were altered to simulate the different stages of degeneration. The external mechanical loading was applied in the sagittal mode, via flexion–extension motions and the magnitude was 2.0 Nm for each mode. They were applied to each of the healthy and disc degeneration models, and for each of the three severities of degeneration. The ROM at adjacent and index levels was extracted and normalized with respect to the healthy (baseline) spine. Results: A nonuniform distribution in the ROM was found for different disc degeneration states, segmental levels, and flexion–extension loading modes. The specific results for each and level are reported in the results section of the paper. Conclusion: Closer follow-up times may be necessary in symptomatic patients with progressive disease, especially with BL involvements.

Purpose: To evaluate if preoperative sterile pyuria can be a prognostic factor for intravesical recurrence (IVR) and overall survival (OS)in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) undergoing surgery. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with UTUC from October 2003 to December 2016 at Korea University Medical Center. Sterile pyuria was defined as urine containing five or more white blood cells per high-power field in the absence of bacteria in urine culture. We used a stepwise multivariable Cox proportional hazards model to assess the independent effects of the prognostic factors for IVR and OS. Results: We investigated a total of 176 patients who were diagnosed with UTUC. Among them, 91 (51.7%) patients had preoperative sterile pyuria. There were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics between the pyuria and non-pyuria groups concerning tumor grade, T stage, tumor multiplicity, and recurrence history. However, there was a significant difference in the IVR between the two groups. In the multivariable analysis, preoperative sterile pyuria, diabetes mellitus, high-grade tumor, and lymphovascular invasion were revealed as independent risk factors for IVR, and only lymphovascular invasion was identified as an independent risk factor for OS. Conclusions: Preoperative sterile pyuria is significantly associated with IVR in patients with UTUC undergoing surgery, but it is not associated with OS. Furthermore, diabetes mellitus, high-grade tumor, and lymphovascular invasion are also independent prognostic factors for these patients.

Pyrethroid insecticides are used in agriculture to treat parasites in livestock. This study developed a simultaneous residue analysis method to measure seventeen pyrethroid insecticides in foods of animal origin, including beef, pork, chicken, milk, and eggs. The method, which comprises instrumental analysis using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and a modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) method for pretreatment, was optimized to verify the applicability of the method. A mixture of acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, and original salt (MgSO4 4 g, NaCl 1 g) was used as the extraction solvent and salt. MgSO4 (150 mg) primary secondary amine (25 mg) and graphitized carbon black (25 mg) were selected for dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE). The method limit of quantitation was 0.01 mg/L, and the linearity of the matrix-matched calibration curves was reasonable (R2 > 0.99). Abstract Purpose Previous studies have suggested that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is associated with cerebral infarction. However, conflicting results have been reported by other researchers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between ADT and cerebral infarction in patients with prostate cancer (PC) using big data. Materials and Methods Using information from the National Health Insurance Service database representative of the entire Korean adult PC population (n = 206 735), data regarding ADT and cerebral infarction between 2009 and 2016 were analyzed. Adjusted hazard ratios for cerebral infarction associated with ADT were estimated using propensity score‐matched Cox proportional hazards models and Kaplan‐Meier survival analyses. Results The final cohort comprised 36 146 individuals with PC, including 24 069 men (66.6%) who underwent ADT. During the mean follow‐up of 4.1 years, 2792 patients were newly diagnosed with cerebral infarction. In the unmatched cohort, there was a significant difference in the annual incidence of cerebral infarction between the ADT and non‐ADT groups (22.8 vs 14.6 per 1000 person‐years, respectively). However, there was no significant difference between the ADT and non‐ADT groups in the matched cohort (14.9 vs 14.6 per 1000 person‐years). The adjusted hazard ratio for cerebral infarction for PC patients who underwent ADT was 1.045 (95% CI 0.943‐1.159; P = 0.401) compared with those who did not undergo ADT. In addition, the cumulative duration of ADT was also not associated with an increased risk for cerebral infarction. However, older age, hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, renal disease, dementia, and atrial fibrillation were revealed to be factors contributing to cerebral infarction. Conclusion This nationwide population‐based study revealed that ADT was not associated with cerebral infarction after adjusting for potential confounders.

Abstract Background A complete enumeration study was conducted to evaluate trends in national practice patterns and direct medical costs for prostate cancer (PCa) in Korea over a 10-year retrospective period using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Methods Reimbursement records for 874,924 patients diagnosed between 2002 and 2014 with primary PCa according to the International Classification of Disease (ICD) 10th revision code C61 were accessed. To assess direct medical costs for patients newly diagnosed after 2005, data from 68,596 patients managed between January 2005 and 31 December 2014 were evaluated. Results From 2005 to 2014, the total number of PCa patients showed a 2.6-fold increase. Surgery and androgen deprivation therapy were the most common first-line treatment, alone or within the context of combined therapy. Surgery as a monotherapy was performed in 23.5% of patients in 2005, and in 39.4% of patients in 2014. From 2008, the rate of robot-assisted RP rose sharply, showing a similar rate to open RP in 2014. Average total treatment costs in the 12 months post-diagnosis were around 10 million Korean won. Average annual treatment costs thereafter were around 5 million Korean won. Out-of-pocket expenditure was highest in the first year post-diagnosis, and ranged from 12 to 17% thereafter. Conclusions Between 2005 and 2014, a substantial change was observed in the national practice pattern for PCa in Korea. The present data provide a reliable overview of treatment patterns and medical costs for PCa in Korea.

Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous pollutants that are released by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials. The top soils of rice paddies were collected from Gyeonggi-do (18 sites), Ulsan (20 sites), and Pohang (19 sites) in Korea to assess the spatial distribution and potential sources of PAHs. The total concentrations of 15 PAHs in the soils were 19.53–672.93, 125.01–3106.27, and 51.94–8106.21 mg/kg in Gyeonggi province, Ulsan, and Pohang, respectively. The concentration of 7 key carcinogenic PAHs were followed the order: Pohang (38.54–4826.63 ng/g) > Ulsan (28.54–1561.39 ng/g) > Gyeonggi province (19.53–206.51 ng/g). Three-ring PAHs were predominant in the soils from Gyeonggi-do while 3–5 ring compounds were abundant in the agricultural soils from the two industrial regions (Ulsan and Pohang). The PAH isomeric diagnostic ratios indicated that PAH contamination in the two cities mainly originated from pyrogenic sources. The principal component analysis indicated that pyrogenic coal burning and residential biomass combustion were major contributors to the soil contamination in the two cities. The transportation of PAHs through the air from industrial complexes and high volume of traffic may influence the PAHs distribution in the soils of the two cities in Korea.

Purpose There are no established statistical data available for the comparison of different surgical methods adopted for the resection of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This study investigates the present status related to BPH surgery in Korea for the past 8 years. Methods National-level data from the National Health Insurance Service and National Statistical Office were analyzed in this study. From 2010 to 2017, the trends of surgeries for BPH were reviewed according to the procedure code including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), or high-power potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP), and this trend also analyzed by age, geographic distribution, and hospital type. Results Over the past 8 years, there was not much change in the total number of BPH-related surgeries (range, 10,393– 11,072). Although there was not much alteration in the number of conventional TURP (from 6,801 in 2010 to 6,645 in 2017), the number of HoLEP has dramatically increased (from 278 in 2010 to 3,805 in 2017). The number of HoLEP surgeries after 2011 exceeded the number of surgeries using KTP, and the gap is anticipated to rise. The number of surgeries by age group was most common in the 70s and the total number of surgeries is decreasing in all age groups; for HoLEP, the trend is steadily increasing over the age of 60 years. Most of the BPH surgeries were performed in metropolitan areas, such as Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Busan, and in larger hospitals compared to smaller hospital settings. Conclusions Through the data of the National Health Insurance Service, we could apprehend the present status of BPH-related surgery in Korea. Then, we could know about the trend according to several factors and we think these results will be valuable as academic references as well.

Purpose To describe our initial experience with a novel method of adenoma retrieval using a pneumovesicum (PNV) after Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). Methods From January 2016 to April 2018, a total of 93 consecutive patients treated with HoLEP were enrolled in this study. For tissue morcellation, we used the PNV morcellation technique for an initial series of 21 patients and the conventional technique (Lumenis VersaCut) for a consecutive series of 72 patients. We compared efficiency and safety between the novel technique and the traditional technique. Subgroup analysis was performed to assess the effectiveness of the current technique in the large prostate (>70 mL). Results There were significant differences in mean age and prostate volume between the 2 groups. However, there were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics and preoperative parameters in the subgroup analysis of large prostates (>70 mL). Purpose: In this study, we described our initial experience and analyze the learning curve of segmental renal artery branch clamping with hand-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (PN) using special instruments. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of consecutive cases of hand-assisted laparoscopic PN (LPN) between May 2015 and April 2018. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, perioperative details, postoperative complications, and warm ischemic time for segmental artery branch clamping were included in our analysis. We used the cumulative sum (CUSUM) method to generate learning curves. Results: Segmental renal artery branch clamping was successfully completed in 16 of 20 patients. The median tumor size was 2.9 cm (range, 1.7–7.0 cm), median operation time was 185 minutes (range, 140–245 minutes), median blood loss was 291 mL (range, 100–600 mL), and median hospital stay was 5 days (range, 4–7 days). The median selective ischemic time was 21 minutes (range, 16–35 minutes). No patient had postoperative complications, acute or delayed bleeding. The median pre- and postoperative serum creatinine levels (0.91 and 0.98 mg/dL, respectively), and the pre- and postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (89.7 and 79.6 mL/min per 1.73 m2, respectively) were similar. Upon visual assessment of the CUSUM plots, a downward inflection point for decreasing total operation time was observed in the 9th case and estimated blood loss in the 12th case. Conclusions: Our study shows that segmental renal artery branch clamping hand-assisted LPN for localized renal tumors is feasible, safe, and has a relatively short learning curve.

This paper proposes a method to extend a sensing range of a short-baseline stereo camera (SBSC). The proposed method combines a stereo depth and a monocular depth estimated by a convolutional neural network-based monocular depth estimation (MDE). To combine a stereo depth and a monocular depth, the proposed method estimates a scale factor of a monocular depth using stereo depth–mono depth pairs and then combines the two depths. Another advantage of the proposed method is that the trained MDE model may be utilized for different environments without retraining. The performance of the proposed method is verified qualitatively and quantitatively using the directly collected and open datasets.

Mycobacterium abscessus comprises rapidly growing mycobacteria, and the clinical manifestations of M. abscessus skin infection include papule, nodule, ulcer, scar and mixed form. The cutaneous infections have been reported due to minor trauma, cosmetic therapy, acupuncture and disseminated infection. A 75-year-old man presented with pruritic diffuse various sized erythematous papuloplaques and pustules on the neck and chest for 2 months. The cutaneous lesions were spread around the wound of the shaving on the neck. The histopathologic findings were consistent with abscess showing infiltrations of neutrophils and lymphocytes in the dermis and negative findings were observed on immunohistochemical stain including acid-fast bacilli stain. One month later, mycobacterial culture result showed positive findings, and the pathogen was identified by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction with hybridization. The patient was treated with combination of clarithromycin and ethambutol for 5 months and there is no evidence of recurrence after 6 months of follow-up. Herein, we report a case of M. abscessus cutaneous infection through minor trauma caused by shaving in the elderly.
