Abstract

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Abstract

We present a characterization of the sensitivity of TES X-ray micro-calorimeters to environmental conditions under frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) readout. In the FDM scheme, each TES in a readout chain is in series with a LC band-pass filter and AC biased with an independent carrier at MHz range. Using TES arrays, cold readout circuitry and warm electronics fabricated at SRON and SQUIDs produced at VTT Finland, we characterize the sensitivity of the detectors to bias voltage, bath temperature and magnetic field. We compare our results with the requirements for the Athena X-IFU instrument, showing the compliance of the measured sensitivities. We find in particular that FDM is intrinsically insensitive to the magnetic field because of TES design and AC readout., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physics

Abstract

We have measured and characterized the thermal crosstalk in two different arrays of transition-edge sensor (TES) X-ray micro-calorimeters with frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) readout. The TES arrays are fabricated at SRON and are a 8$\times$8 and a 32$\times$32 "kilo-pixel" uniform array. The amount of crosstalk is evaluated as the ratio between the averaged crosstalk signal and the X-ray pulse amplitudes. The crosstalk ratios (CR) for our detectors are compliant with the requirements for future X-ray space missions, such as Athena X-IFU (CR$< 10^{-3}$ for first-neighbour pixels): we measured a nearest-neighbour thermal crosstalk ratio at a level of $10^{-4}$, with a highest crosstalk ratio of $4\times 10^{-4}$ for the kilo-pixel array (worst case, center of array) and $1\times 10^{-4}$ for the 8$\times$8 array, with a margin of improvement achievable by optimizing the Cu metallization and the width of the Si supporting structures (muntins) in the backside of the TES array chip. Based on the measured crosstalk ratios, we have estimated the impact on the spectral resolution by means of noise equivalent power (NEP) considerations and a Monte Carlo simulation, finding an average degradation in quadrature of less than 40~meV, compliant with the < 0.2~eV requirement for Athena X-IFU.

5. Single pixel performance of a 32$\times$32 Ti/Au TES array with broadband X-ray spectra

Abstract

We are developing a kilo-pixels Ti/Au TES array as a backup option for Athena X-IFU. Here we report on single-pixel performance of a 32$\times$32 array operated in a Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) readout system, with bias frequencies in the range 1-5 MHz. We have tested the pixels response at several photon energies, by means of a $^{55}$Fe radioactive source (emitting Mn-K$\alpha$ at 5.9 keV) and a Modulated X-ray Source (MXS, providing Cr-K$\alpha$ at 5.4 keV and Cu-K$\alpha$ at 8.0 keV). First, we report the procedure used to perform the detector energy scale calibration, usually achieving a calibration accuracy better than $\sim$ 0.5 eV in the 5.4 - 8.9 keV energy range. Then, we present the measured energy resolution at the different energies (best single pixel performance: $\Delta$E$_{FWHM}$ = 2.40 $\pm$ 0.09 eV @ 5.4 keV; 2.53 $\pm$ 0.10 eV @ 5.9 keV; 2.78 $\pm$ 0.16 eV @ 8.0 keV), investigating also the performance dependency from the pixel bias frequency and the count rate. Thanks to long background measurements ($\sim$ 1 day), we finally detected also the Al-K$\alpha$ line at 1.5 keV, generated by fluorescence inside the experimental setup. We analyzed this line to obtain a first assessment of the single-pixel performance also at low energy ($\Delta$E$_{FWHM}$ = 1.91 eV $\pm$ 0.21 eV @ 1.5 keV), and to evaluate the linearity of the detector response in a large energy band (1.5 - 8.9 keV)., Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity for ASC2020 special issue

Abstract

The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. Abstract

The SWIR module of the TROPOMI instrument on board ESA's Sentinel-5p mission has been very stable during its five years in orbit. Calibration was performed on-ground, complemented by measurements during inflight instrument commissioning. The radiometric response and general performance of the SWIR module are monitored by onboard calibration sources. We show that after five years in orbit, TROPOMI-SWIR has continued to show excellent performance with degradation of at most 0.1 % in transmission and having lost less than 0.3 % of the detector pixels. Independent validation of the instrument calibration, via vicarious calibration, can be done through comparisons with ground-based reflectance data. In this work, measurements at the Railroad Valley Playa are used to perform vicarious calibration of the TROPOMI-SWIR measurements, using both dedicated measurement campaigns, as well as automated reflectance measurements through RADCALNET. As such, TROPOMI-SWIR is an excellent test case to explore the methodology of vicarious calibration applied to infrared spectroscopy. Using methodology developed for the vicarious calibration of the OCO-2 and GOSAT missions, the absolute radiometry of TROPOMI-SWIR performance is independently verified to be stable down to ~ 6–10 % using the Railroad Valley, both on the absolute and, thus, relative radiometric calibration. Differences with the onboard calibration originate from the BRDF effects of the desert surface, the large variety in viewing angles, and the different sizes of footprints of the TROPOMI pixels. However, vicarious calibration is shown to be an additional valuable tool in validating radiance-level performances of infra-red instruments such as TROPOMI-SWIR in the field of atmospheric composition. A three-channel heterodyne balloon-based spectrometer is developed for measuring a variety of atmospheric constituents within the lower stratosphere by Terahertz and submm Limb Sounder, a cooperative European project. This channel is based on a phase-locked Superconducting Integrated Receiver (SIR), the on-chip combination of a low-noise SIS mixer with quasioptical antenna, a superconducting Flux Flow Oscillator (LO) and an SIS harmonic mixer (HM) for FFO phase locking.

However, existing emission estimates based on fire inventories are uncertain4, and vary by up to a factor of four for this event. Here we constrain emission estimates with the help of satellite observations of carbon monoxide5, an analytical Bayesian inversion6 and observed ratios between emitted carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide7. We estimate emissions of carbon dioxide to be 715 teragrams (range 517–867) from November 2019 to January 2020. This is more than twice the estimate derived by five different fire inventories8–12, and broadly consistent with estimates based on a bottom-up bootstrap analysis of this fire episode13. Although fires occur regularly in the savannas in northern Australia, the recent episodes were extremely large in scale and intensity, burning unusually large areas of eucalyptus forest in the southeast13. The fires were driven partly by climate change14,15, making better-constrained emission estimates particularly important. Abstract

During its first year in operation the SWIR module of the TROPOMI instrument was calibrated in-flight and its performance was monitored. In this paper we present the results of the in-flight calibration and the ongoing instrument monitoring. This includes the determination of the background signals, noise performance, ISRF stability and stray-light stability. From these results, the number of incurred dead and bad pixels due to cosmic-ray impacts is determined. The light-path transmission is checked by monitoring internal lamp and diffuser stabilities. Due to its high sensitivity for Earth radiation on the eclips side, the calibration strategy for the background (i.e. dark flux and offset) monitoring was adjusted. Trends over the first full year of nominal operations reveal a very stable SWIR module with little to no degradation. The number of newly incurred dead and bad pixels is negligible since the start of operations. Assuming linear degradation of various component, the SWIR module is expected to keep performing within expected parameters for the full operational lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) is the single instrument on board of the ESA Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite. TROPOMI is a nadir-viewing imaging spectrometer with bands in the ultraviolet and visible, the near infrared and the short-wave infrared (SWIR). An accurate instrument spectral response function (ISRF) is required in the SWIR band where absorption lines of CO, methane and water vapor overlap. Therefore a novel method for ISRF determination for an imaging spectrometer was developed and applied to the TROPOMI-SWIR band. The ISRF of all detector pixels of the SWIR spectrometer has been measured during an on-ground calibration campaign. The accuracy of the derived ISRF is well within the requirement for accurate trace-gas retrievals. Long-term in-flight monitoring of the ISRF is guaranteed by the presence of five SWIR diode lasers. Abstract

The short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectrometer module of the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), on board the ESA Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite, is used to measure atmospheric CO and methane columns. For this, calibrated radiance measurements are needed in which the stray light is reduced strongly. Therefore, a method has been developed and applied in an on-ground calibration campaign to characterize stray light in detail using a monochromatic quasi-point light source. The dynamic range of the signal was extended to more than seven orders by combining saturated and unsaturated measurements. An algorithm was then devised to correct in-flight observations in near-real time, based on Van Cittert deconvolution. A fraction of 4.4 % of the detected light is correctable stray light, reducing the stray-light signal for example in a dark forest scene close to bright clouds by a factor of about 10. It is expected that this reduces the stray-light error sufficiently for accurate gas-column retrievals. In addition, the instrument contains five SWIR diode lasers that enable long-term in-flight monitoring of the stray-light distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
