In this article, I examine the meaning of the use of force for military professionals by analyzing the US Navy’s
Crossing the Line ceremony. Ambiguity surrounds the initiation ritual for crossing the equator onboard naval warships, especially as it comes to its form prior to the late 1990s. All the while, the US Navy has maintained that the ceremony is part of a long tradition for teaching the values of honor, commitment and courage. Inspired by Max van Manen’s approach to phenomenological writing ([1984]. “Practicing Phenomenological Writing.”Phenomenology + Pedagogy 2 (1): 36–69; [2016].Writing in the Dark: Phenomenological Studies in Interpretive Inquiry . London: Routledge), I explicate the idea that the ceremony, in its former form, did indeed teach the value of honor, but through inversion, acting out the worst possible behavior imaginable for military professionals in the form of ablack mass , while the ceremony in its current form teaches the value of individual dignity as a professional obligation. The inquiry concludes with a reflective stance of honor and dignity as moral principles for enabling and constraining the use of force. Derived from the experience of a particular military practice, the stance also has general significance, helping navigate the line between thoughtlessness and thoughtful actions within a social framework, not unlike the just war tradition. SELF-esteem , *DIGNITY , *CROSS-cultural differences , *STOICISM , *ETHICS , *CULTURAL studies , *SOCIABILITY - Abstract
This study explores culturally shared connotations of honor and dignity in North India and Germany. Both, honor and dignity refer to the worth of a person but have distinct psychological implications. Honor as both an independent and interdependent phenomenon varies greatly across cultural groups. Yet, a relatively large volume of research is focused on Middle Eastern, Muslim cultures. Moreover, though a rich body of literature shows that dignity can have different meanings across cultural contexts, its nuanced understanding, particularly in relation to honor, remains underexplored in cross-cultural settings. Given this, the current study expands both these concepts to India with its unique religious and structural characteristics and studies it along with the responses of participants in Germany, examining their cultural differences. Eleven focus group discussions were conducted in North India and Germany where participants discussed their personal associations of both honor and dignity. These discussions were transcribed and later thematically analyzed. The findings indicated unique themes for honor (duty, morality, status, sociability, and stoicism) and dignity (individuality, self-governance, resistance, and enrichment) with some dimensional similarities for both cultural groups, despite dissimilar language usage. Furthermore, the five themes for honor were seen to affect differently depending on its enhancement or loss and its eventual impact on the target of honor, self, or group. As for dignity, participants in both groups had difficulties distinguishing it from honor but had a clear understanding of its intrinsic nature, especially when seen in contradiction with honor. These findings have theoretical and practical implications, particularly while studying different cultural groups together. Moreover, they contribute to the literature on self-worth by refining the idea of dignity, while also expanding our multidimensional understanding of honor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ODDS ratio , *PROFESSIONAL practice , *CHARITIES , *VIOLENCE - Abstract
‘Honour’-based abuse (HBA) studies tend to focus on survivors’ lived experience, with less emphasis on perpetrator characteristics. This study aims to investigate whether various HBA characteristics correlate with different types of perpetrators, based on their relationship with survivors. Savera UK, a charity specialising in HBA and harmful practices, provided 107 cases which were coded for 66 variables. Three main perpetrator types were identified: 1. “Intimate Partner”, 2. “Family” and 3. “Intimate Partner and Family”. Chi-squared analyses were conducted and odds ratios of any significant associations were calculated. The distinct profile of survivor, perpetrator and abuse characteristic for each type was presented. The average number of abuse characteristics reported for the “Intimate partner and Family” perpetrator type was 19, much higher than the other two sub-samples. The implications for professional practice are discussed, highlighting the importance of increasing understanding into ‘honour’-based abuse to improve investigative, safeguarding and prevention interventions. BIBLICAL studies , *FOLLOWERSHIP - Abstract
Using Philippians 1:27–2:4 as an example, this article will explore the role of positionality in biblical studies. Although the process of reflecting on one's positionality is more prevalent in empirical-based research, one's positionality is also relevant in text-based research, such as in biblical studies. This article will demonstrate this by observing the following: first, how some analyses of the collectivistic cultural context of Philippians have been inappropriately influenced by certain implicit individualistic perspectives; and second, how an interpretive lens derived from my positionality as a scholar from an explicitly collectivistic culture is able to highlight a mostly ignored intrinsic correlation between social relations and virtue. While gender inequality remains to be a phenomenon that impacts women globally, the different challenges women are facing in the Mediterranean region where cultural values of honor function as barrier to women’s emancipation beyond the patriarchal structure is often overlooked in the academic literature. This article investigated the representation of two Mediterranean women in the films Mine (1982) and Malena (2000) by examining the problematic effects of patriarchal fantasy, internalized sexism, and female rivalry on the two main characters within the sociocultural framework on gender. Representation of social norms, and their relationship to codes of honor were analyzed in how they reflect the protagonists’ oppression under the patriarchal structure. Through narrative analysis of the two films, the study investigated whether the codes of honor play a role in the maintenance of gender inequality in the Mediterranean region.

The article examines the issues of glocalization and regulation of communicative interaction based on the material of the speech act of defamation. It is shown that countries, when legislating public relations in this area, proceed from the interests dictated by their own information security policy. Using the example of some post-Soviet states, which historically have common sources of law, evidence is presented of the refusal of states to unify legal norms in the field of regulating public communication activity: the speech act of defamation as an illegal and criminally punishable act is excluded from the legislation of Estonia; in Azerbaijan, Latvia, Lithuania, Tajikistan it does not have the status of a serious crime, unlike The Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation. However, this approach does not exclude the emergence of problems, primarily of a methodological nature. As an actual example, fragments of Belarusian legislation are analyzed, which reveal a terminological lacuna in understanding the categories of honor, dignity and business reputation as a triad of intangible subject rights, the attempt on which is realized through a speech act of defamation. The relevance of the legal linguistic interpretation of the designated content of the concepts is substantiated: honor as moral and ethical qualities of a person in the assessment of others; the introverted phenomenon of dignity as a social self-esteem of a person; business reputation as a set of professional and/or service qualities of a person. Based on the material of the Belarusian legislation, a meaningful detailing of the signs of the implementation of a speech act of defamation is given according to the parameters 1) factual nature, 2) object composition, 3) type of information and 4) channel of information dissemination.

21. School Honor Cultures and Violence: The Role of Cultural Orientation and Dispersion.

- Abstract
AbstractWe examine whether adolescents attending schools with honor-oriented cultures are more likely to engage in violence, net of their own honor attitudes. Studies typically estimate a culture’s strength by averaging the residents’ attitudes, but this cannot adequately account for variation among residents. Recent research in cultural sociology suggests that a culture’s orientation
and dispersion are influential. Using data from the Second International Self-Reported Delinquency Study (ISRD-2), we disentangle the honor orientation and homogeneity of school cultures and examine their additive and multiplicative effects on violent offending. We find that adolescents who attend schools with stronger honor-oriented cultures are more likely to engage in violence, irrespective of their own honor attitudes. This relationship is stronger in schools with greater homogeneity. These results suggest that accounting for the honor orientation of school cultures as well as their level of dispersion is important for understanding cultural processes. SEMIOTICS , *FOURTEENTH century , *POETS , *SEMANTICS - Abstract
This article responds to the following problem: why does Arveragus's abandonment of his wife to pursue honor go unquestioned by everyone in the Franklin's Tale, including the wife herself? Chaucer imagines a fictional past in which criticizing honor is impossible. Endeavoring to understand the impossibility, this article draws upon the work of the semiotician A. J. Greimas, which illuminates how the tale's structure forecloses anti-honor discourse. Greimas's theory of history explains how the poet could use foreclosure to simulate the distant past. But the consequences of Dorigen's response to the black rocks suggest how history can modulate from one foreclosure to another—something Greimas does not address. Unlike the tale's Brittany, late-fourteenth-century England was a realm where the negative aspects of honor were increasingly obvious. Chaucer's bracketing of anti-honor discourse might have procured some relief from contemporary anxieties, but his tale also reveals the instability of the historical closure it contrives. SHORT story collections ,VALUES (Ethics) - Abstract
This paper analyzes and interprets the prose of Ernest Koliqi including his short story collections Hija e maleve (“The Shadow of the Mountains”, 1929), published in Zadar; Pasqyrat e Narçizit (“The Mirrors of Narcissus”, 1934), published in Bari and Rome; Tregtar flamujsh (“Flag Merchant”, 1935), published in Tirana; and the novel Shija e bukës së mbrume (“The Taste of Leavened Bread”, 1960), published in Rome. Pasqyrat e Narçizit/“The Mirrors of Narcissus” (1934) is written in a style between poetry and prose. In Hija e maleve/“The Shadow of the Mountains” (1929), the author remains truthful about Albanian traditions. The theme of this collection portrays the main elements of the Albanian way of living and their mentality. The central aspect of Koliqi’s works deals with the drama of the homeland, the struggles of the Albanian intellectuals in general and those of Shkodër in particular. Most stories present cohabitation with mythological creatures; however, there is also Tregtar flamujsh/“Flag Merchant” (1935) which shows modern symbolism with an element of psychoanalysis. In Shija e bukës së mbrume/“The Taste of Leavened Bread” (1960) Koliqi writes about life, the struggles, and the atmosphere of Albanian life. This novel is filled with patriotic, social, and moral values of the Albanian people, even though the main character of the story lives in Albania and abroad. Ernest Koliqi’s characters are typical Albanian people, and the spirit of his works is also of the typical Albanian spirit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This Article considers how the ranking of states, as perpetuated by the international legal order, may play a role in the considerations of those targeted by global naming and shaming campaigns. To do so, it examines Qatar’s response to being shamed in the lead up to and during the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Drawing from international relations literature on status and adopting a critical approach to unpack the prevalence of the hierarchal structuring of states in the contemporary international legal order, the Article claims that the practice of shaming, as a human rights enforcement strategy, inevitably pushes target states to question their status within the international legal community. This could, counterproductively, lead to negative outcomes for the rights of the very individuals these campaigns seek to protect. Furthermore, the Article sketches out a theoretical argument for why certain states may consider the enactment of cosmetic legal reforms to be an attractive strategy for countering a global shaming campaign.

PARENTS , *VIRTUES , *HONOR , *ISLAM , *MUSLIMS , *PARADISE - Abstract
This research examines the importance of honoring and avoiding disobedience to parents in Islam. Islam considers honoring parents as fundamental values and ethical principles emphasized by the religion. Honoring parents is seen as a significant duty in Islam that requires commitment and great respect from Muslims. On the other hand, disobedience to parents is considered reprehensible and a major sin in Islam. The research emphasizes that Allah has made honoring parents among the noble acts of righteousness and good character agreed upon by all divine religions. It includes Quranic verses that encourage honoring parents and describe it as a virtue, highlighting that the Quran has granted rights to parents, even if they are polytheists. The research also examines Prophetic traditions that emphasize the importance of honoring parents and consider it as an act of worshiping Allah after monotheism. It emphasizes that honoring parents entails treating them with kindness, forgiveness, and improving one's behavior towards them. The research clarifies that obedience and respect towards parents are a means to enter Paradise, enhance affection, and love among individuals. It also mentions that respecting and honoring parents is a way of expressing gratitude to them for raising and caring for a person, and that a child's kindness towards their parents can lead to their own children honoring them in the future. The aim of this research is to explore the virtues of honoring parents and the sin of disobedience from an Islamic perspective. The research relied on the descriptive analytical method. - Abstract
The scientific article examines the peculiarities of the philosophical and legal category “human dignity”. In particular, within the framework of this study, the views of ancient thinkers, thinkers of the Middle Ages and the New Age were analyzed, and their interpretation of the category “human dignity” was given accordingly. In the views of Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Gianozzo Manetti, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Immanuel Kant, the essence, meaning and features of human dignity are revealed from various approaches. But at the same time, these views complement each other and allow us to clearly outline the essence of the “human dignity” category. At the same time, it is determined that this is not an exhaustive list of thinkers who research this category, but special attention is paid to it in their works. Special attention is paid to human dignity as a philosophical and legal category, since it is determined that at first “human dignity” was considered as a philosophical category, and later it was considered as a legal category. This was a consequence of the establishment of the category “human dignity” in international legal acts and acts of national legislation, including in Ukraine. The process of research, it was determined that human dignity has been considered by thinkers for many millennia, but at the same time, during the entire existence of this category, it has practically not evolved, which indicates the stability of this category. This is important in view of the fact that human society has reached a unified understanding of human dignity, which is especially important for the modern generation. Also, within the framework of this study, the signs inherent in human dignity were considered. Conclusions have been made and a proper interpretation of the definition of the concept of “human dignity” has been given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the mistreatment of rape victims in Morocco and the risks women face in reporting rape. The stigmatization and categorization of rape victims by Islamic religion and law pose significant challenges, as they prohibit consensual sex outside of marriage. Additionally, the Moroccan Penal Code considers the loss of virginity an aggravating circumstance in rape cases, which could lead to a biased ideology in rape trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The article analyzes the rhetoric of Volhynian court records based on accusations of criminal offences. The focus is on how these sources were constructed by the interested parties, and on how the szlachta culture of violence affected this process. The author explores the arguments that the noblemen presented to reclassify criminal offences as “regular offences.” Concomitantly, she analyzes the performativity of trials as the public stage where the values treasured by the community were articulated, debated and relayed to the interested parties. This constructed “reality” formed the vision of the norm and possible life strategies of noblemen. Circulating in the court and the community, it affected the proceedings of trials and the actors’ actions outside courtroom, for example, by forcing the accused whose honor was insulted by the accusations to react according to the conventions accepted by the community. In the culture where any offence, be it real or imagined, demanded defending one’s honor, a trial was just a part of a conflict and its resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MYSTERY fiction - Abstract
This research paper examines Seishi Yokomizo's first postwar detective novel, The Honjin Murders (1946), which scrutinizes Japanese culture and society, specifically the rural area. This study engages in a thematic analysis of the novel within the context of Japan's experience with the Meiji Enlightenment, the decline of feudalism, the import of Western detective literature, and Japan's postwar shift to democracy. By placing the murder mystery genre in a feudal milieu as the characters struggle to grapple with changing times, Yokomizo enacts the transition of a traditional society into its progression to a modern one. Looking at honor entwined with the act of hara-kiri or seppuku and the contention between traditional and contemporary values, it is found that tradition itself has broken down with the family structure of the Ichiyanagi family as its symbolic representation. While the head of the family, Kenzo Ichiyanagi, has the appearance of a rational individual, he is wrought with the ambivalence of his rural and urban identities; thus, the only true herald of modernity present within the rural boundary is the detective Kosuke Kindaichi. This Article considers how the ranking of states, as perpetuated by the international legal order, may play a role in the considerations of those targeted by global naming and shaming campaigns. To do so, it examines Qatar's response to being shamed in the lead up to and during the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup. This paper asserts that honor-based peoples have and maintain a distinct cultural identity that is valid for at least eighty-five percent of the world population. It is necessarily considered relative to dignity-based societies which make up the other fifteen percent. Practically all dignity-based cultures originated during the Enlightenment; modern honor-based groups will oftentimes through diffusion manifest some dignity-based traits or observe fewer of the traditional honor-based features. This paper will survey both traditional and modern forms of the honor-based culture.

States have always been concerned with regulating in the Constitution or in other domestic normative acts the most important coordinates according to which the good administration of the country is carried out. Depending on specific values and traditions, all states develop in normative acts what they consider most important to express their national identity. The topic we propose started from the curiosity to know whether references are made to divinity or to Christian values in national law, but also in comparative law, in main normative acts. A potential topic of debate would be that of finding out if there is unitary regulation in the Constitution, but also in other normative acts, in what concerns the inclusion of the religious wording in the content of the oath. From this point of view, we consider that the topic is of interest due to the fact it provides additional information both to law specialists and to persons that could find themselves, at some point, in the situation to fulfill the formality of the oath, when assuming the mandate or public office. In order to fulfill the proposed research scope, several normative acts shall be analyzed, both from national legislation, but also from comparative law, in the light of the proposed research topic. The final part of the study shall consist of the conclusions and de lege ferenda proposals.
