Tiivistelmä. Kandidaatin tutkielmani käsittelee talouskasvun ja terveyden välistä yhteyttä. Talouskasvun ja terveyden välistä yhteyttä on syytä tarkastella ajankohtaisista syistä; koronapandemia on väistämättä vaikuttanut sekä kansantalouteen että -terveyteen. Aihe on merkityksellinen niin yksilöllisestä, yhteisöllisestä, yhteiskunnallisesta kuin globaalistakin näkökulmasta. Terveyttä ja taloutta koskevaa päätöksentekoa pitäisikin käsitellä samoissa yhteyksissä, jotta talouskasvu ei tapahtuisi ihmisten terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin kustannuksella. Tutkielman tavoitteena onkin taloudellisen näkökulman lisäksi korostaa inhimillisen näkökulman merkitystä. Tutkimuskysymys: Millainen yhteys talouskasvulla ja terveydellä on? Tutkielmani vastaa siihen, millä tavalla talouskasvu vaikuttaa terveyteen. Ruhm (2009) toteaa, että on tärkeää olla tekemättä oletuksia siitä, että talouden taantuma automaattisesti heijastuisi terveyteen negatiivisesti tai päinvastoin, että talouskasvun terveysvaikutukset ovat automaattisesti positiivisia. Hänen yllättävä johtopäätöksensä asian suhteen onkin se, että keskimäärin talouden heikentyminen heijastuu fyysisen terveyden kohentumisena ja talouden tilanteen paraneminen puolestaan heikompana fyysisenä terveytenä. Valitsemaani aihetta voidaan tarkastella myös tutkimuskysymyksen kannalta vastakkaisesta näkökulmasta eli siitä, miten esimerkiksi laskusuhdanteet tai taantumat vaikuttavat terveyteen. Vaihtoehtoisesti voidaan myös etsiä vastauksia sille, onko taloudellisten kriisien aikaan poikkeavuuksia kansanterveydessä verrattuna talouden kasvuvaiheeseen. Tutkielmassani keskityn kuitenkin pääasiassa tarkastelemaan juuri talouskasvun vaikutuskanavia terveyteen nähden. Esimerkiksi tällainen vaikutuskanava voi alkaa talouskasvusta, joka parantaa tulotasoa ja heijastuu siten muuttuneiden elintapojen kautta terveyteen. Tärkeää onkin huomata, että itsessään talouskasvu ei välittömästi vaikuta terveyteen, vaan muutokset tapahtuvat nimenomaan näiden vaikutuskanavien välityksellä. Yksi keino etsiä vastausta tutkimuskysymykseen on tarkastella bruttokansantuotteen ja terveyden yhteyttä. BKT, joka kertoo kansantaloudessa tiettynä ajanjaksona tuotettujen hyödykkeiden yhteenlasketun arvon, on talouskasvun mittareista yleisimmin käytetty. Tarkemmin ottaen talouskasvun mittaamisessa käytetään tavallisesti henkeä kohden laskettua BKT:n määrän reaalista muutosta (Hyytinen ja Rouvinen, 2005, s. 18). BKT/asukas -lukua käytetään myös yleisenä hyvinvoinnin mittarina. Talouskasvun ja terveyden yhteyttä voidaan tarkastella myös esimerkiksi kuolleisuuden ja sairastavuuden tilastoja seuraamalla. Vaikka BKT:n avulla voidaankin kuvata talouden suuntauksia, ei sen avulla kyetä kuitenkaan tekemään aukottomia päätelmiä esimerkiksi kotitalouksien taloudellisesta hyvinvoinnista, saati sitten terveydestä. Taloudellisen hyvinvoinnin analysointiin sopivat paremmin esimerkiksi työttömyyden, reaalitulojen, konkurssien tai rahoituslaitosten luottotappioiden seuraaminen. BKT ei myöskään kerro tuotannon hyödyllisyydestä tai negatiivisista ulkoisvaikutuksista, jotka ovat erittäin merkityksellisiä etenkin pidemmällä aikavälillä (Tilastokeskus, 2022). (Tilastokeskus, 2020.) Tutkielma jakautuu makro- ja mikrotaloustieteellisiin lukuihin. Luvussa 2 käsitellään talouskasvun ja terveyden yhteyttä makrotaloustieteellisestä näkökulmasta kuolleisuuden, itsemurhien ja työttömyyden kautta. Luku 3 taas on mikrotaloustieteellinen kuvaus talouskasvun ja terveyden yhteydestä. Se pitää sisällään tietoa terveydestä, mielenterveydestä, elintavoista ja alkoholista sekä tulotasosta. Lopuksi yhteenvedossa on tuotu esille tutkielman keskeisimmät asiat, johtopäätökset ja jatkotutkimusehdotukset.

We examined how bees solve a visual discrimination task with stimuli commonly used in numerical cognition studies. Bees performed well on the task, but additional tests showed that they had learned continuous (non-numerical) cues. A network model using biologically plausible visual feature filtering and a simple associative rule was capable of learning the task using only continuous cues inherent in the training stimuli, with no numerical processing. This model was also able to reproduce behaviours that have been considered in other studies indicative of numerical cognition. Our results support the idea that a sense of magnitude may be more primitive and basic than a sense of number. Our findings highlight how problematic inadvertent continuous cues can be for studies of numerical cognition. This remains a deep issue within the field that requires increased vigilance and cleverness from the experimenter. We suggest ways of better assessing numerical cognition in non-speaking animals, including assessing the use of all alternative cues in one test, using cross-modal cues, analysing behavioural responses to detect underlying strategies, and finding the neural substrate.

Photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) is a modern spectral imaging technique utilizing photon-counting detectors (PCDs). PCDs detect individual photons and classify them into fixed energy bins, thus enabling energy selective imaging, contrary to energy integrating detectors that detects and sums the total energy from all photons during acquisition. The structure and composition of the articular cartilage cannot be detected with native CT imaging but can be assessed using contrast-enhancement. Spectral imaging allows simultaneous decomposition of multiple contrast agents, which can be used to target and highlight discrete cartilage properties. Here we report, for the first time, the use of PCD-CT to quantify a cationic iodinated CA4+ (targeting proteoglycans) and a non-ionic gadolinium-based gadoteridol (reflecting water content) contrast agents inside human osteochondral tissue (n = 53). We performed PCD-CT scanning at diffusion equilibrium and compared the results against reference data of biomechanical and optical density measurements, and Mankin scoring. PCD-CT enables simultaneous quantification of the two contrast agent concentrations inside cartilage and the results correlate with the structural and functional reference parameters. With improved soft tissue contrast and assessment of proteoglycan and water contents, PCD-CT with the dual contrast agent method is of potential use for the detection and monitoring of osteoarthritis.

Simultaneous poisoning of sulfur + phosphorus on a platinum-based diesel oxidation catalyst was studied to gain a deeper understanding on the catalyst deactivation. Compared to a single poisoning (sulfur or phosphorus), the simultaneous poisoning had a severe effect on the catalyst activation: light-off temperature for 90% conversion of propene was not reached, this of carbon monoxide was much higher than expected, and the maximum conversion of nitrogen monoxide collapsed. With very comprehensive structural characterization by various methods (e.g. STEM-EDS, XPS, DRIFTS) used, we achieved to conclude an explanation for this. In the case of the S + P-poisoning of the catalyst, formed aluminum phosphate was found to block adsorption sites for sulfur species on alumina and sulfur adsorbs mainly on cerium oxides. In addition, sulfur species remain with and in the vicinity of the platinum particles blocking active sites.

The goal for this thesis was to study the effects of carbon mineralization to the desulfurization slag based mortar and paste samples using autoclave carbonation procedure. During the study, the effects of different carbonation conditions to the compressive strength and crystal structure of a slag brick were tested. Additionally, a number of different mixtures of sand, slag and water were tested to find the most durable and workable composition. In the first phase of the study, bricks made with different ratios of sand and slag were tested for their compressive strength, in order to find the most durable composition. The results of this phase were used to find the optimal mixture and process conditions to produce as durable bricks as possible with mild reaction conditions and short carbonation time. In the second phase, the most durable mixture was carbonated for varying time periods to test the effect of the reaction time to the durability of the brick. The effect of the carbonation in general was also tested, by doing control batches of the identical mixtures with nitrogen pressurizing. Another test parameter was the slag type used, for which basic oxygen furnace slag was tested as a substitute for desulfurization slag. After these optimization tests were done, three different mixtures were analyzed using TGA, XRD and SEM imaging for phase composition analysis. As a result of this study, bricks with compressive strength of over 20 MPa were produced. Samples without carbon dioxide had almost ten times lower compressive strength in otherwise identical conditions. This master’s thesis was part of the FLOW-project. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia hiilidioksidin sitouttamista rikinpoistokuonaan ja näin syntyneen materiaalin toimivuutta betonin korvaamisessa rakennusaineena. Työn aikana selvitettiin erilaisten autoklaavi-karbonointiolosuhteiden vaikutusta materiaalin kestävyyteen ja mikrorakenteeseen, sekä haettiin optimaalista hiekan, kuonan ja veden suhdetta mahdollisimman kestävän kuonapohjaisen materiaalin valmistamiseksi. Työn ensimmäisessä vaiheessa tutkittiin eri hiekan ja kuonan suhteilla valmistettujen näytteiden puristuskestävyyttä lujimman seoksen löytämiseksi. Tulosten perusteella valittiin jatkotutkimuksiin lupaavimmat näytteet, tavoitteena saada mahdollisimman kestävä lopputulos mahdollisimman lyhytkestoisella karbonointireaktiolla ja suurella kuonaosuudella. Työn toisessa vaiheessa kestävintä seostyyppiä karbonoitiin eri aikamääriä, tarkoituksena testata reaktioajan vaikutusta lopputuotteen kestävyyteen. Karbonoinnin vaikutusta ylipäätään lopputuotteeseen tutkittiin tekemällä kontrollinäytteitä typpipaineistetussa reaktorissa. Myös vaihtoehtoista kuonatyyppiä kokeiltiin raaka-aineena rikinpoistokuonan tilalla. Lopuksi kolmen eri seoksen näytteitä tutkittiin lujuuden lisäksi lämpöstabiiliuden osalta TGA-analyysillä ja kiderakenteen osalta XRD-analyysillä ja elektronimikroskoopilla. Suoritetun tutkimuksen perusteella saatiin tuotettua näytepaloja, joiden puristuslujuus oli 20 MPa. Puristuslujuus oli noin kymmenen kertaa lujempi, kuin vastaavalla näytteellä ilman hiilidioksidia. Diplomityö oli osa FLOW-projektia, jossa Oulun yliopiston kuitu- ja partikkelitekniikan tutkimusyksikkö tutkii kiertotalouden ratkaisuja teräksenvalmistuksen sivuvirtojen jatkokäyttöön.

Objective: To investigate the feasibility of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy (NIRS) for evaluation of human articular cartilage biomechanical properties during arthroscopy. Design: A novel arthroscopic NIRS probe designed in our research group was utilized by an experienced orthopedic surgeon to measure NIR spectra from articular cartilage of human cadaver knee joints (ex vivo, n = 18) at several measurement locations during an arthroscopic surgery. Osteochondral samples (n = 265) were extracted from the measurement sites for reference analysis. NIR spectra were remeasured in a controlled laboratory environment (in vitro), after which the corresponding cartilage thickness and biomechanical properties were determined. Hybrid multivariate regression models based on principal component analysis and linear mixed effects modeling (PCA-LME) were utilized to relate cartilage in vitro spectra and biomechanical properties, as well as to account for the spatial dependency. Additionally, a k-nearest neighbors (kNN) classifier was employed to reject outlying ex vivo NIR spectra resulting from a non-optimal probe-cartilage contact. Model performance was evaluated for both in vitro and ex vivo NIR spectra via Spearman’s rank correlation (ρ) and the ratio of performance to interquartile range (RPIQ). Results: Regression models accurately predicted cartilage thickness and biomechanical properties from in vitro NIR spectra (Model: 0.77 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.87, 2.03 ≤ RPIQ ≤ 3.0; Validation: 0.74 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.84, 1.87 ≤ RPIQ ≤ 2.90). When predicting cartilage properties from ex vivo NIR spectra (0.33 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.57 and 1.02 ≤ RPIQ ≤ 2.14), a kNN classifier enhanced the accuracy of predictions (0.52 ≤ ρ ≤ 0.87 and 1.06 ≤ RPIQ ≤ 1.88). Conclusion: Arthroscopic NIRS could substantially enhance identification of damaged cartilage by enabling quantitative evaluation of cartilage biomechanical properties. The results demonstrate the capacity of NIRS in clinical applications.

Zn and ZnFe coated 22MnB5 and 34MnB5 steels were subjected to the direct press hardening process in order to investigate the influence of steel composition on the resulting phase structures. Microstructures were characterized using advanced methods of microscopy. In addition, X-ray diffraction, glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and thermodynamic calculations with Thermo-Calc® were carried out to support the analysis. The results indicate that the steel composition has a clear effect on the phase development within coating and interface regions. Whereas the behavior of the 22MnB5 was comparable to earlier investigations, a clearly non-conventional behavior of the 34MnB5 was observed: the formation of martensitic micro constituents, designated here as α′-Fe(Zn), were identified after die-quenching. The regions of the α′-Fe(Zn) formed mainly in vicinity of steel/coating interface and were emerged into the steel by sharing martensitic morphology with the base steel. The thermodynamic calculations suggest that carbon is effective in stabilizing the γ-Fe(Zn) phase, which enables the formation of the α′-Fe(Zn) in fast cooling. Therefore, the higher initial C content of the 34MnB5 may result in the kinetic stabilization of the γ-Fe(Zn) as the inter-diffusion between Zn and Fe occurs during annealing. Simultaneously occurring carbon partitioning from α-Fe(Zn) to γ-Fe(Zn) could explain a clearly increased C content of the coating/steel interface as well as higher Zn contents in the α′-Fe(Zn) phase compared to 22MnB5. Actually, the present study shows that the same phenomenon occurs also in 22MnB5 steels, but in a much smaller scale. In Zn and ZnFe coated 34MnB5, the thickness of the α′-Fe(Zn) layer was increased with longer annealing times and at higher temperatures. The morphology of the α′-Fe(Zn) layer resembled plate-like martensite and can be assumed to be brittle. Regarding this, the formation of α′-Fe(Zn) interface layer needs to be taken into account in press hardening of 34MnB5 steels.

Sulfur deactivation and regeneration behavior of the Pd/Al₂O₃ catalyst has been investigated via experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. During the sulfur exposure, PdO crystallites grow slightly while bulk Al₂(SO₄)₃ forms on the support. DFT calculations indicate that SOₓ species interact strongly with the catalyst surface making it chemically inactive in agreement with the experimental results. During the regeneration treatment (CH₄ conditions), PdO particles reduce, Al₂(SO₄)₃ is partially removed, and the activity for CH₄ conversion is increased. No full recovery can be observed due to remaining Al₂(SO₄)₃, the formation of encapsulating sulfur species, and the partial reduction of PdO particles. To reoxidize Pd, the catalyst is further regenerated (O₂ conditions). The resulting CH₄ conversion is at the same level than with the regenerated catalyst. Thus, a small amount of Al₂(SO₄)₃ appears to have a stronger effect on the performance than the state of Pd.

In this study, the pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) technique was used on titanium in deionized water at different laser powers to understand its effect on the synthesis yield of nanoparticles. A 500-ns 1062-nm fiber laser at 25 kHz was used to effect PLAL of titanium to produce nanoparticles. TEM images of the synthesized nanoparticles showed spherical particles ranging from 3 32 nm in diameter. The electron diffraction pattern and high peaks in the wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) pattern indicated high crystallinity of nanoparticles. WAXS results showed nanoparticles were allotropes of titania: rutile and anatase. Synthesis yield measurements indicated an increase in yield with the increase in laser power as long as the increase in laser fluence remains proportional to the increase in laser power. However, the yield increased proportionally with the increase in laser fluence. The analysis of the chosen laser pulse duration and repetition rate showed an increase in the yield with longer pulse duration and higher repetition rate. publishedVersion

Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli tutkia muurahaishapon toimivuutta vedynluovuttajana ligniinin depolymerisoinnissa ilman erillisen katalyytin käyttöä. Korkeissa lämpötiloissa ligniinin tiedetään kondensoituvan korkeasti polymerisoituneeksi hiileksi, mutta vedyn avulla tätä reaktiota voidaan ehkäistä. Muurahaishappo tunnetusti vapauttaa vetyä hajoamistuotteenaan. Työn toisena tavoitteena oli tuottaa teollisuuden sovelluksille käyttökelpoisia tuloksia. Tästä johtuen reaktiolämpötilat (250 °C ja 300 °C) ja liuoksen happamuus (8,82 m-% ja 17,64 m-%) pidettiin suhteellisen matalina. Tutkimus suoritettiin kahdessa osassa, joista ensimmäisessä keskityttiin löytämään reaktio-olosuhteet, joissa ligniiniä saataisiin depolymerisoitua mahdollisimman tehokkaasti. Reaktioissa syntyneet kaasumaiset ja nestemäiset reaktiotuotteet analysoitiin kaasukromatografilla. Reaktiossa käytettyä lämpötilaa sekä liuoksen happamuutta muunneltiin eri kokeiden välillä, jotta voitiin arvioida näiden tekijöiden vaikutusta reaktiotuotteiden koostumukseen. Tavoitteena oli tuottaa mahdollisimman paljon kaasua annettujen määreiden rajoissa, sillä teoreettisesti suurempi kaasuntuotto muurahaishapon hajotessa viittaa suurempaan vedyn määrään tuotteissa. Vety puolestaan on tärkeässä roolissa ligniinin polymerisaatiota ajatellen. Tutkimuksen toisessa vaiheessa ligniiniä lisättiin liuokseen olosuhteissa, jotka olivat ensimmäisen vaiheen tulosten mukaisesti parhaat ligniinin depolymerisoitumiseen. Kaikkien kokeiden aikana syntyneiden kaasu- ja nesteseoksien koostumukset analysoitiin kaasukromatografilla. Työn tuloksena saatiin jatkotutkimukseen hyödyllistä dataa matalan lämpötilan ja laimean hapon reaktiotoiminnoista ligniinille. Toistaiseksi juuri kyseisiä laimeita olosuhteita on tutkittu suhteellisen vähän. Vastoin aiempaa tietämystä, myös laimealla happoliuoksella kyettiin tuottamaan suhteellisen suuria määriä kaasua, mikä viittaa myös merkittävään vedyn määrään. Myös lämpötilan havaittiin vaikuttavan reaktioihin enemmän kuin alkuun oletettiin: korkeassa lämpötilassa suoritetut kokeet nostattivat reaktorin paineen huomattavasti korkeammaksi kuin matalan lämpötilan kokeet, jolloin myös kaasua syntyi enemmän. Kaasun CO/CO₂-suhde käyttäytyi painetta epäjohdonmukaisemmin, sillä sen arvo vaihteli riippumatta reaktio-olosuhteista. Yleisesti ottaen tulokset viittasivat vedyn määrän kasvamiseen lämpötilan noustessa. Molemmissa ligniinikokeissa syntyi sama määrä tuhkaa (noin 2 g). Tuhkan korkean koheesion vuoksi kunnollisen näytteen kerääminen osoittautui hyvin vaikeaksi, eikä sen tarkkaa massaa voitu siten mitata. Muurahaishappo osoittautui testien perusteella lupaavaksi vedynluovuttajaksi ligniinin depolymerisointiin. Ligniinitestien aikana onnistuttiin tuottamaan selkeästi suurempi hiilidioksidimäärä kuin pelkillä ensimmäisten testien muurahaishapon hajoamisreaktioilla. Tämä viittaisi ligniinin osittaiseen dekarboksylaatioon reaktioiden aikana. Jatkotutkimuksen kohteina voisi olla ligniinin depolymerisoinnin tarkastelu pidemmillä reaktioajoilla, eri vedynluovuttajien käyttö tai lisätutkimus laimean happoliuoksen riittävyydestä ligniinin rakenteen pilkkomiseen. The basis for this thesis was to explore how formic acid performs as a hydrogen donor in lignin depolymerization, when no additional catalyst is used. It is known that at high temperatures, lignin tends to recondense into highly polymerized fractions (char), and active hydrogen can cap these reactions to hinder char formation. Formic acid is known to release active hydrogen during its decomposition. Another goal was to make the results usable for the industrial applications. To succeed in this, only relatively low temperatures (250 °C and 300 °C) and acid content (8.82 wt % and 17.64 wt %) were used. The research was conducted in two stages, the first of which concentrated on finding the optimal reaction conditions for depolymerizing lignin into smaller fractions. The gas and liquid produced by the reactions were analysed by gas chromatography. The reaction temperature and acid content were changed to see how it affected the composition of the gas and liquid products. The goal was to achieve the greatest possible amount of gas within the defined parameters, because in principle more gas produced in the decomposition of formic acid suggests more potential hydrogen present in the product. The hydrogen in turn is essential for lignin depolymerization. In the second stage lignin was added to the reaction mixture at the conditions determined during the first stage. The products were analysed by gas chromatography. The research resulted in some useful data about the reactions occurring at low temperatures and acid contents. These conditions have remained relatively scarcely researched. Contrary to earlier knowledge, significant amounts of carbon dioxide could be produced even by using low acid content, which suggests that also notable amount of hydrogen was present. The temperature was also observed to affect the results more than was initially thought: the runs done at higher temperature saw an exponential increase in pressure and a greater gas yield than the ones done at low temperature. However, the CO/CO₂-ratio did not seem to be consistent, as it changed regardless of the conditions. These indicators suggested that more hydrogen was released by the reactions at higher temperature. Both depolymerisation experiments yielded about the same amount of char (ca. 2 g). However, due to the difficulty of char recovery given its high cohesion, the weight could not be accurately measured. Formic acid proved to be a promising hydrogen donor. During the lignin solvolysis experiments, a significantly larger amount of carbon dioxide was released than during the formic acid decomposition experiments. This suggests that lignin was partially decarboxylated during the reactions. Additional research should be conducted by using longer reaction times, having a different hydrogen donor or looking into the sufficiency of mild acid solution to depolymerize lignin.
