High chromium superalloys have good overall mechanical properties and are widely used in critical hot-end components. The current manufacturing process still faces the problem of low forming efficiency. Extreme high-speed laser metal deposition (EHLMD) is a new and efficient additive manufacturing technology that can quickly and directly shape the direct forming of difficult-to-process materials. However, EHLMD still possesses some inter-layer defects in EHLMD alloy due to its excessively fast scanning speed, implying that there is potential for further improvement in its properties. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as a post-heat treatment is primarily used for the removal of defects in additive manufacturing components. In this study, the defects, microstructure, and properties of the EHLMD K648 superalloy using Micro-CT, XRD, SEM and TEM under HIP treatment were investigated. The results show that the porosity of the HIP EHLMD K648 superalloy decreased, and slender needle-shaped α-Cr phase, γ′ phase and coarse M6C carbides were precipitated. The tensile strength of the HIP EHLMD K648 superalloy increased by about 240 MPa. However, its plasticity was reduced. To further improve the plasticity of the HIP EHLMD K648 superalloy, subsequent heat treatment was carried out. The outcomes of this study are expected to promote the manufacturing of high-quality chromium superalloys and the development of EHLMD technology.

The single individual capability and insufficient endurance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have always been problems in power inspection operations. This article is based on the new development needs of UAV inspection and proposes a new model of multi-UAVs collaborative inspection. On this basis, this article studies the decoupling and intelligent matching technology between airports and UAVs, task merging and splitting technology in complex multi-task situations, and proposes a safety inspection strategy for multi-UAVs collaborative operations to ensure the safety of operations in the multi-UAVs multi-nests collaborative inspection mode. Finally, a complete multi-UAV, multi-nests collaborative inspection strategy is constructed.

We consider typical environmental conditions, such as different shooting backgrounds, lighting, and shooting distances, and study adaptive shooting algorithms for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on-site environments under typical working conditions to achieve high-quality acquisition of UAV inspection images and reduce the technical difficulty of artificial intelligence recognition of inspection images. Based on the collected high-quality images and the characteristics of unmanned aerial vehicle inspection images, a deep learning technology framework is adopted to study the intelligent identification method of hidden dangers in transmission line equipment and channel environment, achieving the intelligent recognition of pin level fine particle defects.

The hot deformation behavior of AZ42 alloy was observed using thermal compression tests at a temperature scope of 250–400 °C and strain rate scope of 0.001–1 s−1. True stress-strain curves exhibited a combination of work hardening and dynamic softening features. A Northern Goshawk algorithm (NGO)-optimized artificial neural network (ANN) model was proposed. The established NGO-ANN model demonstrated impressive prediction accuracy, achieving a high determination coefficient of 0.991, a mean absolute percentage error of 3.51 %, and a root mean square error of 2.73. Subsequently, three-dimensional (3D) hot processing map based on the dynamic material model (DMM) theory was created. There were three different regions within the processing maps: the flow instability region (region A: 250–260 °C, 0.02–1 s−1, and region B: 300–400 °C, 0.01–0.1 s−1), high-power dissipation coefficient region (region C: 350–400 °C, 0.001–0.02 s−1, and region D: 300–350 °C, 0.5–1 s−1), and low power dissipation efficiency safety region (region E: the rest ones). Microstructural analysis revealed significant local plastic flow features in the flow instability region and a combination of coarse initial deformation grains and fine dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grains in the low power dissipation efficiency safety region. Fine and uniform grains were observed in the high-power dissipation efficiency region with DRX degree VDRX as high as 85.6 %, resulting in the best mechanical properties. Based on the established 3D hot processing map, the optimal process domains were determined.

Non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a critical neurosurgical emergency with a high mortality rate, imposing a significant burden on both society and families. Accurate prediction of the risk of death within 7 days in SAH patients can provide valuable information for clinicians, enabling them to make better-informed medical decisions. In this study, we developed six machine learning models using the MIMIC III database and data collected at our institution. These models include Logistic Regression (LR), AdaBoosting (AB), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Bagging (BAG), Gradient Boosting Machines (GBM), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). The primary objective was to identify predictors of death within 7 days in SAH patients admitted to intensive care units. We employed univariate and multivariate logistic regression as well as Pearson correlation analysis to screen the clinical variables of the patients. The initially screened variables were then incorporated into the machine learning models, and the performance of these models was evaluated. Furthermore, we compared the performance differences among the six models and found that the MLP model exhibited the highest performance with an AUC of 0.913. In this study, we conducted risk factor analysis using Shapley values to identify the factors associated with death within 7 days in patients with SAH. The risk factors we identified include Gcsmotor, bicarbonate, wbc, spo2, heartrate, age, nely, glucose, aniongap, GCS, rbc, sysbp, sodium, and gcseys. To provide clinicians with a useful tool for assessing the risk of death within 7 days in SAH patients, we developed a web calculator based on the MLP machine learning model.

Abstract Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) were found to gradually accumulate in the orthotopic esophageal cancer mouse model during tumor progression. Although the roles of MDSCs in promoting tumor growth and inhibiting immune response have been extensively explored, currently, there are still no effective means for targeting MDSCs clinically. The deficiency of specific markers of MDSCs was responsible for the limited strategy to eliminating in clinic. This study identified that GPR84 was exclusively overexpressed on MDSCs. It was further found that GPR84 was prominently expressed on MDSCs in clinical samples and tumor mouse models, which drives the immunosuppression on CD8+T cells by inhibiting PD-L1 degradation in lysosomes. Furthermore, G-CSF and GM-CSF were found to induce GPR84 expression through the STAT3/C/EBPβ signaling pathway. In addition, GPR84+MDSCs and PD-L1+MDSCs were highly accumulated in anti-PD-1 therapy-resistant patients with esophageal cancer, and high GPR84 signature risk was verified as a negative factor for the overall survival of patients with anti-PD-1 treatment. Finally, GPR84 antagonism combined with an anti-PD-1 antibody enhanced the antitumor responses. Therefore, targeting GPR84 enhanced anti-PD-1 efficacy in esophageal cancer and other malignant tumors. This combination therapy has the potential for tumor therapy in clinics.

This study is a multiscale experimental investigation into the embrittlement of Al-Zn-Mg aluminum alloy (7075-T6) caused by liquid metal gallium. The results of the experiment demonstrate that the tensile strength of the 7075-T6 aluminum alloy significantly weakens with an increase in the embrittlement temperature and a prolonged embrittlement time, whereas it improves with an increase in the strain rate. On the basis of the analysis of the experimental data, the sensitivity of the embrittlement of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy by liquid gallium to the loading strain rate is significantly higher compared to other environmental factors. In addition, this study also includes several experiments for microscopic observation, such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observation, Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) spectroscopy, and Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The experimental observations confirmed the following: (1) gallium is enriched in the intergranular space of aluminum; (2) the fracture mode of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy changes from ductile to brittle fracture; and (3) the infiltration of liquid gallium into aluminum alloys and its enrichment in the intergranular space result in the formation of new dislocation nucleation sites, in addition to the original dislocations cutting and entanglement. This reduces the material’s ability to undergo plastic deformation, intensifies stress concentration at the dislocation nucleation point, and, ultimately, leads to the evolution of dislocations into cracks.

ObjectiveCaring for older adults with disabilities is a source of stress for family caregivers, and the lack of social support and the pressure of social exclusion might aggravate family caregiver burden. This study aimed to examine the association between caring load and family caregivers’ burden, as well as the mediating effects of social support and social exclusion.MethodsData used in this study was derived from the nationally representative database of the aged population in China, and 3,125 households with disabled old adults and their home-bound caregivers were eventually selected for this analysis. Regression methods and mediation analysis methods were employed in this study.ResultsThe results indicated that there was a significant positive association between caring load and the caregiver burden, and specifically, social support intensity (rather than social support breadth) and passive social exclusion (rather than active social exclusion) played partial mediating effects. Furthermore, the contributions of mediating effects of social support intensity and passive social exclusion were 13–15 and 27–29%, respectively, and the total contribution of mediating effects was about 35–38%.ConclusionFamily caregivers’ burden should be paid more attention to in the large population with rapidly aging speed like China, and more guidance services as well as support should be provided to family caregivers. In addition, it is crucial to focus on the community’s social support and social exclusion in public policy innovation.

High-performance flexible actuators, integral components of soft robotics, hold promise for advancing applications in safe human–robot interactions, healthcare, and various other fields. Notable among these actuators are flexible electrochemical systems, recognized for their merits in low-voltage manipulation, rapid response speed, and cost-effectiveness. However, the optimization of output strain, response speed, and stability presents a significant challenge in this domain. Despite the application of diverse electrochemically active materials to enhance actuation performance, a critical need persists for corresponding electrical-mechanical models to comprehensively grasp actuation mechanisms. In this study, we introduce a novel electrochemical actuator that utilizes conductive polymer ionogel as active electrodes. This ionogel exhibits exceptional properties, including high conductivity, flexibility, and electrochemical activity. Our electrochemical actuators exhibit noteworthy bending strain capabilities and rapid response rates, achieving frequencies up to 10 Hz at a modest voltage of 1 V. An analytical model integrating ion migration and dynamic processes has been established to elucidate actuator behavior. Simulation results highlight that electrodes characterized by low resistance and high capacitance are optimal for simultaneous enhancement of bending strain and blocking force. However, the augmentation of Young’s modulus, while increasing blocking force, compromises bending strain. Furthermore, a larger aspect ratio proves beneficial for unidirectional stress output, leading to increased bending strain, while actuator blocking force diminishes with greater length. These findings underscore the intricate interplay between material properties and dimensions in optimizing the performance of flexible electrochemical actuators. This work provides important practical and theoretical guidance for the manufacture of high-performance flexible actuators and the search for new smart materials.

Abstract Background To reveal the changes of intestinal microbial abundance and composition, as well as the microbiota metabolic levels of bile acids and short chain fatty acids of healthy preschool children during their growth. Methods Feces of 120 healthy newborns and 150 healthy children aged 6 months to 6 years were collected. Then the composition of intestinal flora was analyzed by 16S rRNA, and the contents of bile acids and short chain fatty acids in feces were detected by LC-MS and GS methods, respectively. Results The composition and function of intestinal microflora were not stable in neonatal period but significantly improved at 6 months after birth, and gradually stabilized and tended to adult-like formation after 2–3 years old. The levels of short chain fatty acids and secondary bile acids were consistent with the development of gut microbiota. Conclusion The age of 6 months may be a critical period for the development of intestinal microflora in children.

Multifunctional fiber materials play a key role in the field of smart textiles. Temperature sensing and active thermal management are two important functions of smart fabrics, but few studies have combined both functions in a single fiber material. In this work, we demonstrate a temperature-sensing and in situ heating functionalized conductive polymer microfiber by exploiting its high electrical conductivity and thermoelectric properties. The conductive polymer microfibers were prepared by wet-spinning the PEDOT:PSS aqueous dispersion with ionic liquid additives, which was used to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the final microfibers. The thermoelectric properties of these microfibers were further studied. Due to their excellent flexibility and mechanical properties, these fibers can be easily integrated into commercial fabrics for the manufacture of smart textiles through knitting. We further demonstrated a smart glove with integrated temperature-sensing and in situ heating functions, and further explored thermoelectric fiber-based temperature-sensing array fabric. These works combine the thermoelectric properties and heating function of conductive polymer fibers, providing new insights that enable further development of high-performance, multifunctional wearable smart textiles.

Abstract Background Tumor necrosis factor-associated apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) was initially considered an immunity guard; however, its function remains controversial. Besides immune cells, lung and colon cancer cells have also been reported to express TRAIL, which can promote tumor invasion and metastasis. However, the biological function and underlying mechanism of action of TRAIL in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain poorly elucidated. Methods The ESCC cells stemness, migration, and proliferation ability was assessed by sphere formation, Transwell, and CCK8 assay. The stemness- and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)- related genes expression levels were analyzed by Western blot and RT-qPCR. The signal activation was conducted by Western blot. The xenograft mouse experiments and lung metastasis model were performed to confirm our findings in vitro. Results Herein, we found that TRAIL is a negative predictor in patients with ESCC. To further investigate the biological function of TRAIL, we established TRAIL knockdown and overexpression ESCC cell lines and found that TRAIL induced EMT and promoted tumor aggressiveness. Furthermore, we demonstrated that TRAIL- overexpressing cells upregulated PD-L1 expression, which was dependent on the p-ERK/STAT3 signaling pathway. We obtained similar results when using recombinant human TRAIL. Finally, we validated the biological role and mechanism of action of TRAIL in vivo. Conclusions These findings demonstrate that TRAIL promotes ESCC progression by enhancing PD-L1 expression, which induces EMT. This may explain the failure of TRAIL preclinical trials.

Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) is one of social protection programs providing unconditional financial assistance to poor women. The present study was conducted to explore the role of BISP in empowering women. This quantitative research was conducted in two districts of Punjab randomly selected out of 36 using face-to-face interviews with a sample size of 160 women beneficiaries of BISP. Research findings show that the majority of beneficiaries (78.8%) were married, with rural background (88%). A huge number (80%) of beneficiaries were illiterate. Similarly, overwhelming majority (81.9%) of respondents has labor as source of income. Most of the respondents were strongly agree (65%) and agree (95%) that the assistance should be more than Rs.5000/month or Rs.10000/month. Similarly, 69.4% and 71.3% of respondents agreed that female adults should take household decision and children should attend school regardless of gender. The government should provide appropriate assistance allowance for needy families especially for the empowerment of women. Moreover, the government should also launch massive programs to maximize girls' education with motive to empower women.

Abstract Background Hearing loss is highly prevalent and associated with reduced well-being in older adults. But little is known about the role of social factors in the association of hearing difficulty and its health consequences. This study aims to examine the association between self-reported hearing loss and health-related quality of life (HRQoL, consisted of physical and mental component summary, PCS and MCS), and to investigate whether social engagement mediates this association. Method Data on 4035 older adults aged 60 years or above from a cross-sectional nationally representative database in China were obtained to address this study. HRQoL was measured by the Short Form 12 Health Survey (SF-12). Hearing loss was defined by a dichotomized measure of self-reported hearing difficulty, which has been proved to be sensitive and displayed moderate associations with audiometric assessment in elderly population. Social engagement was measured by the Index of Social Engagement Scale. Bootstrap test was applied to test for the significance of the mediating role of social engagement. Results Self-reported hearing loss was found negatively associated with HRQoL in older adults, and hearing loss was much more related to reduced mental well-being. Social engagement played a partial mediating role in the association of hearing loss and HRQoL. Social engagement account for 4.14% of the variance in the change of PCS scores and 13.72% for MCS, respectively. Conclusion The study lends support to the hypothesis that hearing loss is associated with aging well beings, and the use of hearing aid or proper social engagement intervention may improve the quality of life among the elderly.

Objectives: Gait and balance disturbances are common symptoms of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate gait and balance parameters after external lumbar drainage (ELD) using APDM inertial sensors.Methods: Two-minute walkway tests were performed in 36 patients with suspected iNPH and 20 healthy controls. A total of 36 patients underwent ELD. According to clinical outcomes, 20 patients were defined as responders, and the other 16 as non-responders. The gait parameters were documented, and the corresponding differences between responders and non-responders were calculated.Results: When compared with healthy controls, patients with suspected iNPH exhibited decreased cadence, reduced gait speed, a higher percentage of double support, decreased elevation at mid-swing, reduced foot strike angle, shorter stride length, difficulty in turning, and impaired balance functions. After the ELD, all these manifestations, except elevation at mid-swing and balance functions, were significantly improved in responders. The change of Z-score absolute value in the six parameters, except for foot strike angle, was >1. No significant improvement was observed in non-responders.Conclusion: APDM inertial sensors are useful for the quantitative assessment of gait impairment in patients with iNPH, which may be a valuable tool for identifying candidates that are suitable for shunting operations.

Mindfulness has been found to have many positive effects on life outcomes, including mental health and educational achievement. However, less is known about the antecedents of mindfulness, particularly in Chinese college students. This study examines the effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on mindfulness among Chinese college students in September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that ACEs negatively affected students' mindfulness. The data were collected from 1,871 college students from 12 colleges across China. The results aligned with our hypothesis that ACEs was negatively associated with mindfulness. In particular, emotional abuse and neglect in childhood appear to have the most negative effects on mindfulness compared to other dimensions of ACEs such as physical abuse and household challenges.

Abstract Background The inequity of healthcare utilization in rural China is serious, and the urban-rural segmentation of the medical insurance system intensifies this problem. To guarantee that the rural population enjoys the same medical insurance benefits, China began to establish Urban and Rural Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URRBMI) nationwide in 2016. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to compare the healthcare utilization inequity between URRBMI and New Cooperative Medical Schemes (NCMS) and to analyze whether the inequity is reduced under URRBMI in rural China. Methods Using the data from a national representative survey, the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which was conducted in 2015, a binary logistic regression model was applied to analyze the influence of income on healthcare utilization, and the decomposition of the concentration index was adopted to compare the Horizontal inequity index (HI index) of healthcare utilization among the individuals insured by URRBMI and NCMS. Results There is no statistically significant difference in healthcare utilization between URRBMI and NCMS, but in outpatient utilization, there are significant differences among different income groups in NCMS; high-income groups utilize more outpatient care. The Horizontal inequity indexes (HI indexes) in outpatient utilization for individuals insured by URRBMI and NCMS are 0.024 and 0.012, respectively, indicating a pro-rich inequity. Meanwhile, the HI indexes in inpatient utilization under the two groups are − 0.043 and − 0.028, respectively, meaning a pro-poor inequity. For both the outpatient and inpatient care, the inequity degree of URRBMI is larger than that of NCMS. Conclusions This paper shows that inequity still exists in rural areas after the integration of urban-rural medical insurance schemes, and there is still a certain gap between the actual and the expected goal of URRBMI. Specifically, compared to NCMS, the pro-rich inequity in outpatient care and the pro-poor inequity in inpatient care are more serious in URRBMI. More chronic diseases should be covered and moral hazard should be avoided in URRBMI. For the vulnerable groups, special policies such as reducing the deductible and covering these groups with catastrophic medical insurance could be considered.

Glypican-3 (GPC3), the cellular membrane proteoglycan, has been established as a tumor biomarker for early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). GPC3 is highly expressed in more than 70% HCC tissues detected by antibody-based histopathological systems. Recently, aptamers, a short single-strand DNA or RNA generated from systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX), were reported as potential alternatives in tumor-targeted imaging and diagnosis. In this study, a total of 19 GPC3-bound aptamers were successfully screened by capillary electrophoresis (CE)-SELEX technology. After truncated, AP613-1 was confirmed to specifically target GPC3 with a dissociation constant (KD) of 59.85 nM. When modified with a phosphorothioate linkage, APS613-1 targeted GPC3 with a KD of 15.48 nM and could be used as a specific probe in living Huh7 and PLC/PRF/5 imaging, GPC3-positive cell lines, but not in L02 or A549, two GPC3-negative cell lines. More importantly, Alexa Fluor 750-conjugated APS613-1 could be used as a fluorescent probe to subcutaneous HCC imaging in xenograft nude mice. Our results indicated that modified AP613-1, especially APS613-1, was a potential agent in GPC3-positive tumor imaging for HCC early diagnosis. For VR systems, one of its core parts is to present people with a real and immersive 3D simulation environment. This paper uses real-time computer graphics technology, three-dimensional modeling technology, and binocular stereo vision technology to study the multivisual animation character objects in virtual reality technology; designs a binocular stereo vision animation system; designs and produces a three-dimensional model; and develops a virtual multivisual animation scene application. The main research content and work performed in the text include the research of the basic graphics rendering pipeline process and the analysis and research of each stage of the rendering pipeline. It mainly analyzes the 3D graphics algorithm used in the three-dimensional geometric transformation of computer graphics and studies the basic texture technology, basic lighting model, and other image output processes used in the fragment processing stage. Combined with the development needs of the subject, the principles of 3D animation rendering production software and 3D graphics modeling are studied, and the solid 3D model displayed in the virtual reality scene is designed and produced. This article also reflects the application of virtual reality in multivisual animation character design from the side, so it has realistic value and application prospects.

Abstract Objectives Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV), previously known as Henoch–Schönlein purpura, is the most common vasculitis that has a classical skin manifestation of palpable purpuric rash. Factors pertinent to IgAV remain inadequately understood. Here, we aimed to examine the gut microbiome shifts associated with IgAV and its recovery. Methods Stool samples were collected from 10 children with IgAV (6–14 years old) before and after a multi‐drug therapy, along with 9 age‐matched healthy children. The samples were subjected to metagenomic analyses to investigate the taxonomic and functional shifts of the gut microbiome. Results The analyses revealed that compared with healthy controls, treatment‐naïve patients exhibited substantial taxonomic and functional alterations of gut microbiota, including 104 IgAV‐depleted species and 7 IgAV‐elevated species (FDR 0.1) between the patients and healthy controls. The treatment‐responsive features included Weissella, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum and three components of a putative glutamine transport system. Importantly, gram‐positive bacteria accounted for over 85% of the numbers and total relative abundance of the species that were associated with IgAV and responsive to the treatment. In addition, of the 122 IgAV‐depleted bacterial genes, 82 were mainly contributed by gram‐positive bacteria and 12 by gram‐negative bacteria. Conclusions Gram‐positive bacteria are the main drivers underlying the gut microbiome shifts of IgAV, which may assist rational management of the disease.

This paper establishes a mathematic model of a CO2 two-phase ejector to investigate flow distribution in the components of a mixing chamber and diffuser. The suction chamber was modeled using the characteristic line method to describe the development process of the supersonic expansion wave, and the mixing chamber, as well as diffuser models, were built based on the double-flow model. The reliability of the model was verified by experimental data. The distributions of flow parameters along the axis of the mixing chamber and diffuser were analyzed under different expansion ratios of the ejector. Structure optimizations of the mixing chamber and diffuser were conducted. The results showed that the primary flow temperature gradually increased along the axis of the mixing chamber and diffuser, but the Mach number distribution decreased for a certain ejector expansion ratio. The temperature and Mach number of the secondary flow showed the opposite trend. Moreover, at the initial stage of mixing, the fluid pressure increased rapidly, and the Mach number of the primary flow decreased rapidly. The gas-phase fraction of primary flow increased gradually in the mixing chamber and was stable in the diffuser. When the length–diameter ratio of the mixing chamber was about 10.8–12, it was beneficial to mix uniformity, and when the expansion angle of the diffuser was 4–6°, the ejector had a better ejector efficiency.

Background: Some bereaved parents experience a decreasing trajectory of grief, while others fail to adapt over the long term and persistently suffer from negative health consequences. This study investigates the mediating role of social integration in the relationship between losing an only child and parental health in a family-oriented society. Method: A sample of 1828 bereaved parents and 4739 non-bereaved parents was drawn from a 10-city survey in China. Regression methods were used to examine the impact of child loss on parental health, and Sobel test was applied to examine the mediating role of social integration. Results: Bereaved parents who lost their only child have worse self-rated health and more negative affect than the non-bereaved parents, which lasted for years after the death of the only child. The Sobel test shows that 24.8% of the total effects on self-rated health and 6.7% of the total effects on negative affect can be explained via decreased social integration. The gender of parents and child as well as fertility intentions are important sources of heterogeneity in the Chinese culture. Limitation: The results based on cross-sectional data may only reveal correlation rather than causality. The data was retrieved from self-reported questionnaires and there is a lack of objective measures of parental health. Moreover, the detailed mechanisms behind how child loss resulted in less social integration should be further explored. Conclusions: Significant disparities in health outcomes and social integration were found for bereaved parents relative to the non-bereaved parents. Future work is needed to assess the health of bereaved parents, identify the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, and design inclusive intervention programs.

Abstract Background Despite decades of study, debates exist surrounding the relationship between education and functional health status transition among elderly populations. This study aims to add evidence to the debates using China as a case study. Specifically, this study analysed the association of education with functional health status transition and then the mechanism behind that association using the budget constraint relax hypothesis and the efficiency improvement hypothesis among elderly population in China. Methods Based on data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Surveys from 2008 and 2011, this study focussed on adults aged 65 years and above, with a final sample size of 12,112. A generalised structural equation model was used to analyse the relationship between education and functional health status transition and the mechanism behind that association. Results During the three examined years, among elderly adults who were nondisabled at baseline, 53.1% stayed nondisabled, 14.6% became disabled, and 32.3% died; among those disabled in 2008, 8.1% recovered, 21.6% stayed disabled, and 70.3% died. Compared with older adults without any education, those who had attended primary schools had both lower mortality and disability, whereas those who had attended high schools and above only had a lower mortality rate. The budget constraint relax hypothesis and the efficiency improvement hypothesis explained the majority of the relationship between education and transition from non-disability to death, but hardly explained the transition from non-disability to disability. Furthermore, once a person was disabled, education had no significant relationship with functional ability recovery or mortality. Conclusions Attending primary school seems to provide the highest benefit to functional health status transition among older and nondisabled persons in China. Those who attended high schools and above are expected to live a longer life with disability. The mechanism between education and the onset of disability needs more discussion.

Abstract Background Children who suffer from parental migration have been manifested to exhibit physical and mental impairments at higher rates. This current study aims to explore unintentional injury disparity among schooling left-behind children, migrant children and residential children in China, and to examine the risk factors of unintentional injury among the three types of children based on a multi-level system framework. This study will fill the gaps of this topic for China and contribute to the world literature in the context of countries with frequent population migration. Methods Data for 4479 children aged 6–16 of a representative population sample were obtained from a survey conducted in China in 2017. Child’s unintentional injury in this survey was measured based on the definition and classification of ICD-10. Descriptive analysis, multivariable logistic regression and zero-inflated negative binomial regression were employed in this study. Results Left-behind children showed higher prevalence of total unintentional injury than migrant and residential children, as well as in 14 specific unintentional injuries. There was a statistical difference between left-behind and residential children’s unintentional injuries, but no significant difference was found between migrant and residential children. Results also indicated that both individual and environmental factors constructed as a multi-level system were associated with children’s unintentional injuries. Conclusions Family migration may have contributed to the increased unintentional injury risks among children. Left-behind children were more vulnerable to suffer from unintentional injuries than migrant and residential children, and specific attentions should be paid to unique group of children, especially the left-behind children. Given the importance and serious consequences of children’s unintentional injuries, the findings may provide implications for necessary intervention.

In this study, the reciprocity theorem for elastodynamics is transformed into integral representations, and the fundamental solutions of wave motion equations are obtained using Green’s function method that yields the integral expressions of sound beams of both bulk and Rayleigh waves. In addition to this, a novel surface integral expression for propagating Rayleigh waves generated by angle beam wedge transducers along the surface is developed. Simulation results show that the magnitudes of Rayleigh wave displacements predicted by this model are not dependent on the frequencies and sizes of transducers. Moreover, they are more numerically stable than those obtained by the 3-D Rayleigh wave model. This model is also applicable to calculation of Rayleigh wave beams under the wedge when sound sources are assumed to radiate waves in the forward direction. Because the proposed model takes into account the actual calculated sound sources under the wedge, it can be applied to Rayleigh wave transducers with different wedge geometries. This work provides an effective and general tool to calculate linear Rayleigh sound fields generated by angle beam wedge transducers.

Porosity is an important characteristic of porous material, which affects mechanical and material properties. In order to solve the problem that the large distribution range of pore size of porous materials leads to the large detection errors of porosity, the non-linear ultrasonic testing technique is applied. A graphite composite was used as the experimental object in the study. As the accuracy of porosity is directly related with feature extraction, the dynamic wavelet fingerprint (DWFP) technology was utilized to extract the feature parameter of the ultrasonic signals. The effects of the wavelet function, scale factor, and white slice ratio on the extraction of the nonlinear feature are discussed. The SEM photos were conducted using gray value to identify the aperture. The relationship between pore diameter and detection accuracy was studied. Its results show that the DWFP technology could identify the second harmonic component well, and the extracted nonlinear feature could be used for the quantitative trait of porosity. The larger the proportion of the small diameter holes and the smaller the aperture distribution range was, the smaller the error was. This preliminary research aimed to improve the nondestructive testing accuracy of porosity and it is beneficial to the application of porous material in the manufacturing field.

The ultrasonic phased array total focusing method (TFM) has the advantages of full-range dynamic focusing and high imaging resolution, but the problem of long imaging time limits its practically industrial applications. To reduce the imaging calculation demand of TFM, the locations of active array elements in the sparse array are optimized by combining almost different sets with the genetic algorithm (ADSGA), and corrected based on the consistency of the effective aperture with the equivalent point diffusion function. At the same time, to further increase the imaging efficiency, a sparse-TFM image with lower resolution is obtained by reducing the number of focus points and then interpolated by the new edge-directed interpolation algorithm (NEDI) to obtain a high quality sparse-TFM image. Compared with TFM, the experimental results show that the quantitative accuracy of the proposed method is only decreased by 1.09% when the number of sparse transmitting elements reaches 8 for a 32-element transducer, and the imaging speed is improved by about 16 times with the same final pixel resolution.

This article explores the effects of SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (S/A) on sintering characteristics and provides guidance for alleviating ash depositions in a large-scale circulation fluidized bed. Five synthetic coal ash (SCA) samples with different S/As were treated in a muffle furnace for 12 h at different temperatures (from 773 K to 1373 K, in 100 K intervals). The morphological and chemical results of the volume shrinkage ratio (VSR), thermal deformation analysis by dilatometer (DIL), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were combined to describe the sintering characteristics of different samples. The results showed that the sintering procedure mainly occurred in the third sintering stage when the temperature was over 1273 K, accompanied with significant decreases in the VSR curve. Excess SiO2 (S/A = 4.5) resulted in a porous structure while excess Al2O3 (S/A = 0.5) brought out large aggregations. The other three samples (S/A = 1.5, 2.5, 3.5) are made up of an amorphous compacted structure and are composed of low fusion temperature materials (e.g., augite and wadsleysite.). Sintering temperatures first dramatically decrease to a low level and then gradually rise to a high level as S/A increases, suggesting that Al2O3-enriched additives are more effective than SiO2enriched additives in alleviating depositions.

Hydraulic turbine runner has a complex structure, and traditional location methods can't meet its requirement. This paper describes a source location of cracks in turbine blades by combining kernel independent component analysis (KICA) with wavelet neural network (WNN). The research shows that the location accuracy of WNN combined with KICA feature extraction is the best comparing with the results of WNN and back propagation neural network (BPNN). The method decreases the dimension of input parameters and improves the accuracy of location as well.

Catecholamine metabolism plays an important role in the determination of insect body color and cuticle sclerotization. To date, limited research has focused on these processes in silkworm. In the current study, we analyzed the interactions between catecholamines and melanin genes and their effects on the pigmentation patterns and physical properties of sclerotized regions in silkworm, using the melanic mutant melanism (mln) silkworm strain as a model. Injection of β-alanine into mln mutant silkworm induced a change in catecholamine metabolism and turned its body color yellow. Further investigation of the catecholamine content and expression levels of the corresponding melanin genes from different developmental stages of Dazao-mln (mutant) and Dazao (wild-type) silkworm revealed that at the larval and adult stages, the expression patterns of melanin genes precipitated dopamine accumulation corresponding to functional loss of Bm-iAANAT, a repressive effect of excess NBAD on ebony, and upregulation of tan in the Dazao-mln strain. During the early pupal stage, dopamine did not accumulate in Dazao-mln, since upregulation of ebony and black genes led to conversion of high amounts of dopamine into NBAD, resulting in deep yellow cuticles. Scanning electron microscope analysis of a cross-section of adult dorsal plates from both wild-type and mutant silkworm disclosed the formation of different layers in Dazao-mln owing to lack of NADA, compared to even and dense layers in Dazao. Analysis of the mechanical properties of the anterior wings revealed higher storage modulus and lower loss tangent in Dazao-mln, which was closely associated with the altered catecholamine metabolism in the mutant strain. Based on these findings, we conclude that catecholamine metabolism is crucial for the color pattern and physical properties of cuticles in silkworm. Our results should provide a significant contribution to Lepidoptera cuticle tanning research.

In order to address the problem of poor imaging detection of internal defects caused by the multi-layer curved surface structure and strongly attenuating material of composite insulators, the total focusing method (TFM) with two-layer curved surface correction was investigated, Virtual source (VS) technology was introduced to improve the transmitted energy of the single-element transmission, combined with the delay multiply and sum (DMAS) algorithm to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and ultrasonic imaging detection of defects of different sizes of side-drilled holes (SDHs) in the sheath layer and core rod layer. An examination ofthe delamination defects at the core rod layer of the composite insulators was also carried out. The results show that the double-layer surface correction method is able to calibrate the propagation time of the ultrasonic wave to accurately localise the defects. Moreover, the VS technique is able to effectively detect SDI-15 and delamination defects in the core rod layer that cannot be detected using the conventional TFM. After incorporating the DMAS technique, the average SNRs of the TFM and virtual source total focusing method (VSTFM) are improved by 12.75 dB and 13.77 dB, respectively. This shows that the DMAStechnique can significantly improve the SNR of detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
