OBJECTIVE Achieving solid fusion of the lumbosacral junction continues to be a challenge in long-segment instrumentation to the sacrum. The purpose of this study was to test the condition of adding sacral anchors through an S1 alar screw (S1AS) and multirod construct relative to using S1 pedicle screws (S1PSs) alone with sacroiliac fixation in lumbosacral junction augmentation. METHODS Seven fresh-frozen human lumbar-pelvic spine cadaveric specimens were tested under nondestructive moments (7.5 Nm). The ranges of motion (ROMs) in extension, flexion, left and right lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR) of instrumented segments (L3–S1); the lumbosacral region (L5–S1); and the adjacent segment (L2–3) were measured, and the axial construct stiffness (ACS) was recorded. The testing conditions were 1) intact; 2) bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) fixation at L3–S1 (S1PS alone); 3) BPS and unilateral S2 alar iliac screw (U-S2AIS) fixation; 4) BPS and unilateral S1AS (U-S1AS) fixation; 5) BPS and bilateral S2AIS (B-S2AIS) fixation; and 6) BPS and bilateral S1AS (B-S1AS) fixation. Accessory rods were used in testing conditions 3–6. RESULTS In all directions, the ROMs of L5–S1 and L3–S1 were significantly reduced in B-S1AS and B-S2AIS conditions, compared with intact and S1PS alone. There was no significant difference in reduction of the ROMs of L5–S1 between B-S1ASs and B-S2AISs. Greater decreased ROMs of L3–S1 in extension and AR were detected with B-S2AISs than with B-S1ASs. Both B-S1ASs and B-S2AISs significantly increased the ACS compared with S1PSs alone. The ACS of B-S2AISs was significantly greater than that of B-S1ASs, but with greater increased ROMs of L2–3 in extension. CONCLUSIONS Adding sacral anchors through S1ASs and a multirod construct was as effective as sacropelvic fixation in lumbosacral junction augmentation. The ACS was less than the sacropelvic fixation but with lower ROMs of the adjacent segment. The biomechanical effects of using S1ASs in the control of long-instrumented segments were moderate (better than S1PSs alone but worse than sacropelvic fixation). This strategy is appropriate for patients requiring advanced lumbosacral fixation, and the risk of sacroiliac joint violation can be avoided.

(1) Background: The three-dimensional printing (3DP) technique has been reported to be of great utility in spine surgery. The purpose of this study is to report the clinical application of personalized preoperative digital planning and a 3DP guidance template in the treatment of severe and complex adult spinal deformity. (2) Methods: eight adult patients with severe rigid kyphoscoliosis were given personalized surgical simulation based on the preoperative radiological data. Guidance templates for screw insertion and osteotomy were designed and manufactured according to the planning protocol and used during the correction surgery. The perioperative, and radiological parameters and complications, including surgery duration, estimated blood loss, pre- and post-operative cobb angle, trunk balance, and precision of osteotomy operation with screw implantation were collected retrospectively and analyzed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of this technique. (3) Results: Of the eight patients, the primary pathology of scoliosis included two adult idiopathic scoliosis (ADIS), four congenital scoliosis (CS), one ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and one tuberculosis (TB). Two patients had a previous history of spinal surgery. Three pedicle subtraction osteotomies (PSOs) and five vertebral column resection (VCR) osteotomies were successfully performed with the application of the guide templates. The main cobb angle was corrected from 99.33° to 34.17°, and the kyphosis was corrected from 110.00° to 42.00°. The ratio of osteotomy execution and simulation was 97.02%. In the cohort, the average screw accuracy was 93.04%. (4) Conclusions: The clinical application of personalized digital surgical planning and precise execution via 3D printing guidance templates in the treatment of severe adult rigid deformity is feasible, effective, and easily generalizable. The preoperative osteotomy simulation was executed with high precision, utilizing personalized designed guidance templates. This technique can be used to reduce the surgical risk and difficulty of screw placement and high-level osteotomy.

The primary outcome was fusion rate. Secondary outcomes were VAS, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores, operation duration, incision length, estimated blood loss, drainage volume, radiological outcomes, and complications.Results: At the 6- and 12-month follow-up points, similar fusion rates were observed based on CT scans in both groups (P=0.583 and 0.583). CBT provided significantly better short-term functional status at 3 months postoperation on ODI and JOA scores (P=0.012 and 0) and similar improvements in pain intensity and functional status at other follow-up points. In addition, CBT resulted in significantly better surgical characteristics. Notably, CBT fixation led to lower incidence of screw loosening (P=0.006).Conclusion: CBT-screw fixation for single-level lumbar fusion in patients with osteoporosis provided improvement in clinical symptoms comparable to that of TLIF using PS fixation. Significantly better lumbar stability was found in the CBT group. A general machine learning (ML) framework of surface wetting is proposed by considering a broad range of factors, including solid surface topography, solid surface chemistry, liquid properties, and environmental conditions. In particular, an XGBoost-based ML model is demonstrated for learning the surface wetting behaviors processed by a laser-based surface functionalization process, namely nanosecond laser-based high-throughput surface nanostructuring (nHSN). This is the first known attempt to apply machine learning to surface wetting by considering both surface topography and surface chemistry properties. Novel microscale and nanoscale topography parameters viz., roughness, fractal, entropy, feature periodicity are defined with suitable computer algorithms to comprehensively describe the surface topography. A novel set of surface chemistry parameters such as polarity, volume, and amount of functional groups are also used as the machine learning model input. Upon analyzing the importance of each parameter for the nHSN process, surface chemistry shows the greatest importance in determination of surface wettability, while surface morphology also plays a part in influencing the wettability.

Enabling capillary wicking on bulk metal alloys is challenging due to processing complexity at different size scales. This work presents a laser-chemical surface treatment to fabricate superwicking patterns guided by a superhydrophobic region over a large-area metal alloy surface. The laser-chemical surface treatment generates surface micro/nanostructures and desirable surface chemistry simultaneously. The superhydrophobic surface was first fabricated over the whole surface by laser treatment under water confinement and fluorosilane treatment; subsequently, superwicking stripes were processed by a second laser treatment in air and cyanosilane treatment. The resultant surface shows superwicking regions surrounded by superhydrophobic regions. During the process, superwicking regions possess dual-scale structures and polar nitrile surface chemistry. In contrast, random nanoscale structures and fluorocarbon chemistry are generated on the superhydrophobic region of the aluminum alloy 6061 substrates. The resultant superwicking region demonstrates self-propelling anti-gravity liquid transport for methanol and water. The combination of the capillary effect of the dual-scale surface microgrooves and the water affinitive nitrile group contributes toward the self-propelling movement of water and methanol at the superwicking region. The initial phase of wicking followed Washburn dynamics, whereas it entered a non-linear regime in the later phase. The wicking height and rate are regulated by microgroove geometry and spacing.

Study Design: Modified Delphi study. Objective: The objective of this study was to establish expert consensus on the application of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) by using the modified Delphi study. Methods: From June 2019 to March 2020, Members of the Chinese Study Group for Lateral Lumbar Spine Surgery were selected to collect expert feedback using the modified Delphi method where 65 spine surgeons from all over China agreed to participate. Four rounds were performed: 1 face-to-face meeting and 3 subsequent survey rounds. The consensus was achieved with ≥a 70.0% agreement for each question. The recommendation of grade A was defined as ≥90.0% of the agreement for each question. The recommendation of grade B was defined as 80.0-89.9% of the agreement for each question. The recommendation of grade C was defined as 70.0-79.9% of the agreement for each question. Results: A total of 65 experts formed a panelist group, and the number of questionnaires collected was 63, 59, and 62 in the 3 rounds. In total, 5 sections, 71 questions, and 382 items achieved consensus after the Delphi rounds including summary; preoperative evaluation; application at the lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, adult degenerative scoliosis, postoperative adjacent segmental degeneration, and revision surgery; complications; and postoperative follow-up evaluation of LLIF. Conclusion: The modified Delphi method was utilized to ascertain an expert consensus from the Chinese Study Group for Lateral Lumbar Spine Surgery to inform clinical decision-making in the application of LLIF. The salient grade A recommendations of the survey are enumerated.

Ultrasonic metal welding (UMW) has been widely applied as a high throughput solid-state joining technology for multilayers of sheet metal. During a typical UMW process, multilayer work materials are mechanically compressed by a knurl-patterned horn (also known as a sonotrode) onto an anvil tool, and a simultaneous in-plane sliding is applied to the horn at an ultrasonic frequency (20 kHz or higher) to help form the weld at the material interfaces. There is a great challenge in modeling and simulating the dynamic behavior of the work material and the whole weld formation process is subject to ultrasonic mechanical loadings imposed by the knurl-patterned horn tool. In this work, finite element (FE) models are developed to simulate the multilayer UMW process using knurl-patterned tools by directly applying the ultrasonic vibration as a model input. For a short weld duration of 0.1∼0.5 s, a high-fidelity FE modeling approach is developed using ABAQUS/Explicit to simulate the dynamic material response under the 20 kHz horn vibration. For an extended long welding duration of approximately 1.0 s, a computationally efficient hybrid approach is developed using both ABAQUS/Explicit and DEFORM-3D in order to leverage the strengths of each software package. The developed models are validated using experimental data of dynamic welding force, temperature, and weld geometry from in-situ process measurements of UMW. The 3D FE models developed in this study are the most comprehensive solution to date to simulate the complex material response subject to UMW process conditions and provide engineering guidance for the design of UMW applications.

The industrial heritage has a huge potential value. At present, China strongly called people to pay attention on protection and development of the industrial heritage. The project is closely to the call of national development industrial culture, in Guangyuan city Dahua mills as the foothold to study the protection and reuse of industrial heritage, improve production and living environment, promote the development of regional economy, finally realization of industrial heritage protection and sustainable development goals. This project uses SketchUp, Photoshop and other design softwares to express the graphic representation of the reuse design of Dahua Yarn factory, and to explore and study the protection and reuse design of industrial heritage. In the author’s opinion, in the protection and reuse design of industrial heritage, the occurrence of “formalization” should be avoided, and the reuse design scheme should be formulated according to the characteristics of specific industrial heritage. In combination with the project itself, tourism mode or other modes may not be necessary. There are many problems, and we need new thinking in this area, as well as more practice.

Surface wettability plays an important role in heterogeneous electrocatalysis. Here we report a facile laser ablation strategy to directly modify the wettability of the silver catalyst surface and investigate its effect on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A broad range tuning of 2e−/4e− ORR pathways was achieved, with hydrophilic silver surfaces (contact angle (θw) 31.1° ± 0.6°) showing high activity and selectivity towards 4e− reduction of oxygen to water.

Aims The aim of this study was to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to investigate changes in diffusion metrics in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) up to five years after decompressive surgery. We correlated these changes with clinical outcomes as scored by the Modified Japanese Orthopedic Association (mJOA) method, Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Methods We used multi-shot, high-resolution, diffusion tensor imaging (ms-DTI) in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) to investigate the change in diffusion metrics and clinical outcomes up to five years after anterior cervical interbody discectomy and fusion (ACDF). High signal intensity was identified on T2-weighted imaging, along with DTI metrics such as fractional anisotropy (FA). MJOA, NDI, and VAS scores were also collected and compared at each follow-up point. Spearman correlations identified correspondence between FA and clinical outcome scores. Results Significant differences in mJOA scores and FA values were found between preoperative and postoperative timepoints up to two years after surgery. FA at the level of maximum cord compression (MCL) preoperatively was significantly correlated with the preoperative mJOA score. FA postoperatively was also significantly correlated with the postoperative mJOA score. There was no statistical relationship between NDI and mJOA or VAS. Conclusion ms-DTI can detect microstructural changes in affected cord segments and reflect functional improvement. Both FA values and mJOA scores showed maximum recovery two years after surgery. The DTI metrics are significantly associated with pre- and postoperative mJOA scores. DTI metrics are a more sensitive, timely, and quantifiable surrogate for evaluating patients with CSM and a potential quantifiable biomarker for spinal cord dysfunction. Extreme wetting activities of laser-textured metal alloys have received significant interest due to their superior performance in a wide range of commercial applications and fundamental research studies. Fundamentally, extreme wettability of structured metal alloys depends on both the surface structure and surface chemistry. However, compared with the generation of physical topology on the surface, the role of surface chemistry is less explored for the laser texturing processes of metal alloys to tune the wettability. This work introduces a systematic design approach to modify the surface chemistry of laser textured metal alloys to achieve various extreme wettabilities, including superhydrophobicity/superoleophobicity, superhydrophilicity/superoleophilicity, and coexistence of superoleophobicity and superhydrophilicity. Microscale trenches are first created on the aluminum alloy 6061 surfaces by nanosecond pulse laser surface texturing. Subsequently, the textured surface is immersion-treated in several chemical solutions to attach target functional groups on the surface to achieve the final extreme wettability. In this work, we conduct a systematic experimental investigation of surface integrity for steel and aluminum alloys processed via nanosecond laser-based high-throughput surface nanostructuring (nHSN) process. nHSN surface morphology and surface chemistry are first experimentally characterized, and the results show that surface nanostructure with proper surface chemistry is generated due to the combined effect of chemical etching and attachment of functional groups of low surface energy. Desired surface wetting behavior is achieved using a proper silane reagent during the nHSN chemical immersion treatment phase, while surface nanostructure can be finely modulated by adjusting the laser processing parameters. nHSN nanostructures with fluorosilane chemistry exhibit strong capability to repel water, leading to superhydrophobicity achieved on two important engineering metal alloys, namely steel and aluminium alloys. It is further experimentally demonstrated that the microhardness and anti-corrosion performance of the nHSN surface can be significantly enhanced compared with the untreated surface, indicating that the nHSN process is very effective for enhancing the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of these important metal alloys. These results show that nHSN simultaneously creates random nanostructures, attains desirable surface chemistry and enhances surface integrity over large-area metal alloy surfaces.

The incidence of distraction spinal cord injury (DSCI), which results from spinal cord ischemia due to vascular compromise and spinal cord tract disturbances, remains high. Furthermore, because no ideal animal model that mimics DSCI in clinical settings is available thus far, the related molecular mechanisms underlying DSCI remain unclear. Thus, this study aimed to establish a porcine model of DSCI and investigate the neuroinflammation and apoptosis mechanisms in these pigs. Before surgery, all pigs were randomly divided into three groups: sham group, osteotomy surgery only; the incomplete distraction spinal cord injury (IDSCI) and complete distraction spinal cord injury (CDSCI) group, osteotomy plus DSCI surgery with a motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitude decreased by approximately 75% and 100%, respectively. After surgery, modified Tarlov scoring and MRC muscle strength scoring were used to evaluate neurologic function in each group. We observed the distracted spinal cord using MRI, and then all pigs were sacrificed. Inflammatory cytokine levels in the spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were also analyzed. We used immunofluorescence staining to assess the neuronal and microglial structure and function and astrocyte hyperplasia in the central DSCI lesions (T15). Western blotting was used to determine the expression of apoptosis-related proteins. Results showed that the modified Tarlov scoring and muscle strength decreased significantly in the two DSCI groups. T2-MRI showed a relative enhancement at the center of the DSCI lesions. H&E and Lxol fast blue staining revealed that spinal cord distraction destroyed the normal structure of spinal cord tissues and nerve fiber tracts, exacerbating inflammatory cell infiltration, hyperemia, and edema. The IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α levels increased in the spinal cord and CSF following DSCI. Immunofluorescence staining results indicated the GFAP, Iba-1 expression increased following DSCI, whereas the NeuN expression reduced. Moreover, DSCI promoted the protein expression of P53, Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), and Caspase-3 in the spinal cord tissues, whereas it reduced the Bcl-2 expression. This study successfully established a porcine DSCI model that closely mimics DSCI in clinical settings, and clarified the mechanisms underlying DSCI-associated neuroinflammation and apoptosis; thus, our findings highlight potential DSCI-treatment strategies for further establishing suitable drug therapies.

Objective To compare the safety and accuracy of cortical bone trajectory screw placement between the robot-assisted and fluoroscopy-assisted approaches. Methods This retrospective study was conducted between November 2018 and June 2020, including 81 patients who underwent cortical bone trajectory (CBT) surgery for degenerative lumbar spine disease. CBT was performed by the same team of experienced surgeons. The patients were randomly divided into two groups—the fluoroscopy-assisted group (FA, 44 patients) and the robot-assisted group (RA, 37 patients). Robots for orthopedic surgery were used in the robot-assisted group, whereas conventional fluoroscopy-guided screw placement was used in the fluoroscopy-assisted group. The accuracy of screw placement and rate of superior facet joint violation were assessed using postoperative computed tomography (CT). The time of single screw placement, intraoperative blood loss, and radiation exposure to the surgical team were also recorded. The χ2 test and Student’s t-test were used to analyze the significance of the variables (P Results A total of 376 screws were inserted in 81 patients, including 172 screws in the robot-assisted group and 204 pedicle screws in the fluoroscopy-assisted group. Screw placement accuracy was higher in the RA group (160, 93%) than in the FA group (169, 83%) (P = 0.003). The RA group had a lower violation of the superior facet joint than the FA group. The number of screws reaching grade 0 in the RA group (58, 78%) was more than that in the FA group (56, 64%) (P = 0.041). Screw placement time was longer in the FA group (7.25 ± 0.84 min) than in the RA group (5.58 ± 1.22 min, P P = 0.313). The radiation time of the FA group (0.43 ± 0.07 min) was longer than the RA group (0.37 ± 0.10 min, P = 0.001). Furthermore, the overall learning curve tended to decrease. Conclusions Robot-assisted screw placement improves screw placement accuracy, shortens screw placement time, effectively improves surgical safety and efficiency, and reduces radiation exposure to the surgical team. In addition, the learning curve of robot-assisted screw placement is smooth and easy to operate.

We sought to assess the elasticity change of the paravertebral fascia and muscle in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients with Lenke Type 1, 2, or 3 curves after posterior selective fusion surgery.The shear wave elasticity imaging system was used to assess the elasticity of the thoracic paravertebral muscles and fascia both on the concave and convex sides. Three regions of interest, including the apex, upper end, and lower end of the main curve, were tested.Ten female patients, with an average age of 16.6 ± 2.7 years old, were included. The average post-operation follow-up period was 9.0 ± 2.4 months. The Cobb angle was significantly corrected from 63.6 ± 12.0° to 10.7 ± 5.4° (p 0.05). The length of the trunk increased from 40.4 ± 2.5 cm to 46.0 ± 2.8 cm (p 0.05). The elasticity of deep fascia didn't show a significant change post-operation (p 0.05). The elasticity of the paravertebral muscle on the concave side had a significant increase at the final follow-up (p 0.05). The elasticity of the paravertebral muscle on the convex side also increased at the upper end (p 0.05). The elasticity asymmetry of the deep fascia decreased, but the elasticity asymmetry of the paravertebral muscle increased at the upper end of the curve (p 0.05).The paravertebral muscle on the concave side is stiffer after surgery. Elastic asymmetry of paravertebral muscle increased and elastic asymmetry of the deep fascia decreased at the upper end of the curvature. Further study is needed to elucidate the mechanism by which the paravertebral soft tissue responds after surgery.

Study Design: Retrospective case-control study. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the value of 3-dimensional printing (3DP) spine model in the surgical treatment of severe spinal deformity since the prosperous development of 3DP technology. Methods: Severe scoliosis or hyper-kyphosis patients underwent posterior fixation and fusion surgery using the 3DP spine models were reviewed (3DP group). Spinal deformity surgeries operated by free-hand screw implantation during the same period were selected as the control group after propensity score matching (PSM). The correction rate, pedicle screw accuracy, and complications were analyzed. Class A and B screws were defined as accurate according to Gertzbein and Robbins criteria. Results: 35 patients were enrolled in the 3DP group and 35 matched cases were included in the control group. The perioperative baseline data and deformity correction rate were similar between both groups ( P > .05). However, the operation time and blood loss were significantly less in the 3DP group (296.14 ± 66.18 min vs. 329.43 ± 67.16 min, 711.43 ± 552.28 mL vs. 1322.29 ± 828.23 mL, P < .05). More three-column osteotomies (Grade 3-6) were performed in the 3DP group (30/35, 85.7% vs. 21/35, 60.0%. P = .016). The screw placement accuracy was significantly higher in the 3DP group (422/582, 72.51% vs. 397/575, 69.04%. P = .024). The screw misplacement related complication rate was significantly higher in the free-hand group (6/35 vs. 1/35, P = .046). Conclusions: The study provided solid evidence that 3DP spine models can enhance surgeons’ confidence in performing higher grade osteotomies and improve the safety and efficiency in severe spine deformity correction surgery. 3D printing technology has a good prospect in spinal deformity surgery.

The machining performance of a high-energy nanosecond pulse laser with a near-infrared wavelength is investigated for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) with two different fiber arrangements. This research work demonstrates for the first time that a keyhole mode cutting can be achieved for CFRP materials using a high-energy nanosecond pulse laser of a Long Pulse mode (120 ns). Specifically, it is shown that the short-duration Q-Switch mode (8 ns) results in ineffective material removal for CFRP, despite much higher peak laser power intensity than the Long Pulse mode. In Long Pulse mode, multi-pass straight line and contour cutting experiments are further performed to investigate the effect of laser processing parameters and resultant machined surface integrity. Plasma absorption effects using both pulse modes are discussed. The results show that a 2.2 mm thick cross-ply CFRP panel can be cut through using as few as 6 laser passes, and a high-quality machined surface can be produced with a limited heat-affected zone and minimal fiber pull-out using Argon assist gas. The successful outcomes from this work provide the key to enable efficient CFRP laser machining using high-energy nanosecond pulse lasers, and offer insight into the unique energy absorption mechanisms for CFRP laser machining.

An experimental study was conducted to characterize the laser-textured surfaces fabricated by using a novel nanosecond Laser-based High-throughput Surface Nanostructuring (nHSN) method. While the two-step nHSN approach (i.e., water-confined nanosecond laser texturing and chemical immersion treatment) in producing superhydrophobicity over metal surfaces is described in great details, a throughput analysis of different laser-based surface texturing methods is also performed in the term of Specific Laser Scanning Time (SLST). It is found that the nHSN process significantly increases the processing rate from hundreds of minutes per square inch to seconds in comparison to the existing ultrashort laser-based surface texturing techniques. In order to examine the performance of the novel nHSN-treated surfaces in the term of “water-/ice-repellency”, a series of experiments were performed in the present study to not only characterize the surface structures and wettability of the nHSN-treated aluminum surfaces, but also evaluate the effects of the nHSN treatment on the dynamics of water droplet during the impacting process (i.e., spreading, receding, and rebounding), as well as their capability in reducing ice adhesion strength. It is found that, while the untreated bare aluminum surface and the only laser-textured aluminum surface are hydrophilic with the static contact angle being smaller than 90° and the contact angle hysteresis being larger than 90°, the nHSN-treated surfaces appear to be superhydrophobic with a significantly larger static contact angle (i.e., ~170°) and a much smaller contact angle hysteresis (i.e., ~20°). The superhydrophobicity of the nHSN surfaces is further promoted to “ice-repellency” by the complete droplet rebounding phenomenon in the dynamic water droplet impacting process and the reduced ice adhesion strength.

In this work, an innovative high-throughput laser surface nanostructuring process was developed to enhance the hydrophobicity and reduce the reflectivity of the Ti-6Al-4V surface using a nanosecond pulse laser. The laser textured Ti-6Al-4V surfaces exhibit combined anti-reflective, highly hydrophobic and mechanically enhanced effects. In the meantime, the anti-reflective Ti-6Al-4V surfaces show different colors when treated by different laser processing parameters. Compared with the existing ultra-short laser-based surface-texturing methods which often rely on the generation of micro-scale patterns using a focused laser spot and very fine spatial resolution, this innovative laser surface treatment method significantly increases the processing speed and reduces the production cost. This novel process will bring a new avenue for controlling the surface color, wettability and mechanical property of the important engineering surfaces.

Ultrasonic welding (UW) process offers the ability to create highly efficient solid-state joints for lightweight metal alloys with low power consumption. During the process, a distinct diffusion layer is observed at the joint interface that undergoes severe plastic deformation at elevated temperature. A hierarchical multiscale method is proposed in this study to predict the diffusion behavior of the UW process of dissimilar materials. The method combines molecular dynamics and classical diffusion theory to calculate the thickness of the diffusion layer at the welded interface. A molecular dynamics model is developed for the first time that considers the effect of transverse ultrasonic vibration to simulate the evolution of the diffusion layer. The effect of ultrasonic vibration at the atomic level is assumed to provide thermal energy at the joint interface and the mechanical movement of atoms. The influence of sinusoidal velocity change during ultrasonic vibration is incorporated by numerically time integrating the diffusivity at different ultrasonic velocity. The simulation result shows that the solid-state diffusivity depends on temperature, pressure, and transverse ultrasonic velocity. Higher temperature, pressure, and ultrasonic velocity result in higher diffusivity leading to larger diffusion layer thickness. This article provides a comprehensive review of the diffusion bonding behavior and its dependence on process variables. It also presents a numerical approach combining molecular dynamics and hierarchical multiscale calculation to predict the diffusion layer thickness for the UW process of dissimilar materials.

Terahertz (THz) imaging has attracted much attention within the past decade as an emerging nondestructive evaluation technique. In this paper, we present a novel Laser-based Metamaterial Fabrication (LMF) process for high-throughput fabrication of transparent conducting surfaces on dielectric substrates such as glass, quartz and polymers to achieve tunable THz bandpass characteristics. The LMF process comprises two steps: (1) applying ultrathin-film metal deposition, with a typical thickness of 10 nm, on the dielectric substrate; (2) creating a ~100-micron feature pattern on the metal film using nanosecond pulsed laser ablation. Our results demonstrate the use of laser-textured ultra-thin film with newly integrated functional capabilities: (a) highly conductive with ~20 Ω/sq sheet resistance, (b) optically transparent with ~70% transmittance within visible spectrum, and (c) tunable bandpass filtering effect in the THz frequency range. A numerical analysis is performed to help determine the fundamental mechanism of THz bandpass filtering for the LMF-built samples. The scientific findings from this work render an economical and scalable manufacturing technique capable of treating large surface area for multi-functional metamaterials.

An ultrasonic-vibration-assisted laser annealing method was developed to enhance the performance of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) thin films. The influences of ultrasonic vibration, laser scan line overlapping rate (LOR) and laser spot overlapping rate (SOR) on surface morphology, FTO layer thickness, RMS roughness, crystal structure and photoelectric properties of the FTO films were investigated. The results indicated that the presence of ultrasonic vibration during laser annealing could significantly enhance the film compactness, and using moderate LOR and SOR values resulted in significantly decreased FTO layer thicknesses and RMS roughnesses as well as slightly increased crystallite sizes, thus yielding significantly improved optical transmittance values and slightly enhanced electrical conductivity values. It was found that the optimal LOR and SOR values for ultrasonic-vibration-assisted laser annealing of the FTO films were 80% and 90%, respectively. The as-obtained film possessed the best overall photoelectric property with an average transmittance (400–800 nm) of 85.9%, a sheet resistance of 8.7 Ω/sq and a figure of merit of 2.51 × 10–2 Ω–1. This work may be of great significance in terms of performance optimization of transparent conducting oxide (TCO) thin films.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is a friction stir-based material processing method for enhancement of material microstructural and surface properties. As FSP is a multi-physics problem coupled with severe plastic deformation, material flow, heat flow, and microstructure evolution, modeling of the FSP process can be very complicated and challenging. Few research work has been reported on modeling and simulations of FSP for material modification. In this study, a computation-efficient process model is developed using ABAQUS/Explicit based on coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) formulation to simulate FSP of aluminum alloy 5083. The three-dimensional (3D) finite element model simulates the entire process of FSP including tool plunging, dwelling, and stirring phases. Simulations are performed to evaluate the effects of tool-rotational speed and tool pin profile during the FSP process. The computational efficiency of the developed model is also evaluated in comparison with other existing models for friction stir–welding processes. FSP experiment is performed with measurements of process force and temperature for model validation. This study shows that the CEL model can be a powerful numerical tool to simulate the complex process mechanics and optimize the FSP process parameters for industrial applications.

A preliminary experimental study on “warm ultrasonic impact-assisted laser metal deposition” (WUI-LMD) is reported, and such a study is rare in literature to the authors’ knowledge. In WUI-LMD, an ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) tip is placed near the laser spot for in-situ treatment of laser-deposited warm solid material, and the UIT and LMD processes proceed simultaneously. Under the conditions investigated, it is found that in-situ UIT during WUI-LMD can be much more effective in reducing porosity than a post-process UIT. Possible underlying mechanisms are analyzed. WUI-LMD has great potential to reduce defects and improve mechanical properties without increasing manufacturing time.

Objective. We aimed to evaluate the value of 3-dimensional printing (3DP) spine model in the surgical treatment of severe spinal deformity since the prosperous development of 3DP technology.Materials and Methods. Severe scoliosis or hyper-kyphosis patients underwent posterior fixation and fusion surgery using the 3DP spine models were reviewed (3DP group). Spinal deformity surgeries operated by free-hand screw implantation during the same period were selected as the control group after propensity score matching (PSM). The correction rate, pedicle screw accuracy, and complications were analyzed. Class A and B screws were defined as accurate according to Gertzbein and Robbins criteria.Results. 35 patients were enrolled in the 3DP group and 35 matched cases were included in the control group. The perioperative baseline data and deformity correction rate were similar between both groups (P>0.05). However, the operation time and blood loss were significantly less in the 3DP group (296.14±66.18 min vs. 329.43±67.16 min, 711.43±552.28 mL vs. 1322.29±828.23 mL, PConclusion. The study provided solid evidence that 3DP spine models can enhance surgeons' confidence in performing higher grade osteotomies and improve the safety and efficiency in severe spine deformity correction surgery. 3D printing technology has a good prospect in spinal deformity surgery.

ObjectiveTo characterize the safety and effectiveness during one surgeon’s initial phases of performing a Midline lumbar fusion by freehand technique based on perioperative parameters.MethodsThe first 90 consecutive patients underwent single level MIDLF, utilized a consistent technique, performed by one surgeon were retrospectively studied. A piecewise regression analysis was performed to evaluate the operation duration based on case number, and to estimate the breakpoint. The early learning period and the late steady phase was divided according to the case number of the breakpoint. Perioperative parameters and clinical data of 2 groups were compared then to elucidate if improvement in operative duration was accompanied by better patient prognosis.ResultsThe inflectional asymptote of the surgeon’s learning curve for MIDLF was achieved at the 40th case. The demographics parameters were similar between the early group of 40 patients and the latter 50. Average surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, length of incision, duration of drainage, postoperative drainage and post-operative hospitalization were significantly less in the late cohort (p.05), and lateral cortical breach was observed in 35/360 cases (24 vs.11, P.05). The overall complication incidence decreased alone with the learning curve, and statistical difference was achieved. Furthermore, there was no difference in clinical improvement between the two groups.ConclusionsOur result indicated that technical proficiency in MIDLF was achieved after 40 surgeries. And it is effective to significantly improve the patients’ functional status and relief the pain during one surgeon’s learning process of MIDLF in the treatment of lumbar degenerative disease, even in the initial phase. As the surgeon gains surgical proficiency and familiarity with MIDLF procedure, potential complications could be minimized. Furthermore, our results provided evidence to the excellent performance as an alternative option to traditional pedicle screw fixation.

Terahertz (THz) optoelectronics have great potentials in communication, imaging, sensing and security applications. However, the state-of-the-art fabrication processes for THz devices are costly and time-consuming. In this work, we present a novel laser-based metamaterial fabrication (LMF) process for high-throughput fabrication of transparent conducting surfaces on dielectric substrates such as quartz and transparent polymers to achieve tunable THz bandpass filtering characteristics. The LMF process comprises two steps: (1) applying ultrathin-film metal deposition, with a typical thickness of 10 nm, on the dielectric substrate; (2) creating periodic surface pattern with a feature size of ~100 microns on the metal film using nanosecond pulsed laser ablation. Our results demonstrate the LMF-fabricated ultra-thin metal film exhibits newly integrated functionalities: (a) highly conductive with sheet resistance of ~20 Ω/sq; (b) optically transparent with visible transmittance of ~70%; (c) tunable bandpass filtering effect in the THz frequency range; and (d) extraordinary mechanical durability during repeated fatigue bending cycles. The scientific findings from this work will render an economical and scalable manufacturing technique capable of treating large surface area for multi-functional THz metamaterials.

Flexible optoelectronic devices have attracted considerable attention due to their low weight, portability, and ease of integration with other devices. However, major issues still exist: they are subject to repeated stresses, which often leads to damage; and the current fabrication methods such as photolithography and nano-imprint lithography can be very time-consuming or costly. This work aims to develop a novel cost-effective and time-efficient laser metasurface fabrication (LMF) technique for production of flexible optoelectronic devices. The experimental results have shown that the laser patterned flexible surfaces exhibit high visible transmittance, low sheet resistance, and extraordinary mechanical durability under repeated bending cycles. The laser patterned flexible surfaces have also demonstrated the potential to be utilized as heaters, which renders them new de-icing or de-fogging applications. This innovative laser patterning method will provide a new avenue for fabrication of multifunctional optoelectronic devices.

A novel selective laser melting (SLM) process is presented for fabrication of glass fiber-reinforced metal (GFRM) matrix composite material. The SLM experiments are conducted using aluminum powders as matrix material and S-2 glass fibers as reinforcement. Laser heating turns the aluminum powders into a molten viscous flow which encapsulates the S-2 glass fibers. The glass fibers are not melted during the SLM process as the glass transition temperature is significantly higher than the melting point of aluminum powder. After the process, a mechanically enhanced glass fiber-reinforced metal matrix composite is produced with intact glass fibers embedded in the aluminum matrix.

STUDY DESIGN This was a retrospective observational study. OBJECTIVE We aimed to characterize the feasibility of assessing the accuracy of cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screw placement in midline lumbar interbody fusion using a traditional pedicle screw insertion accuracy evaluation system based on computed tomography (CT). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Since Santoni and colleagues proposed CBT as an alternative approach for the treatment of lumbar degenerative disease, CBT has been biomechanically and clinically investigated in detail. The reported misplacement rate was 0%-12.5%. Therefore, these cortical screws may result in severe complications, such as nerve root, vascular, and spinal cord injuries. However, to the best of our knowledge, the accuracy of the current assessment system of cortical bone screw placement has not been described clearly. MATERIALS AND METHODS Overall, 342 cortical screws of 69 consecutive patients with lumbar degenerative disease who underwent midline lumbar interbody fusion surgery in one surgeon's initial phase were examined retrospectively. A comprehensive and detailed pedicle screw accuracy classification and grading system was introduced in our study, including 5 types of misplacement: (1) medial and (2) lateral cortical bone perforation (MCP and LCP) of the corresponding pedicle, (3) anterior cortical bone perforation of the vertebral body, (4) endplate perforation, and (5) foraminal perforation (FP). The degree of interobserver and intraobserver agreement with regard to the screw positions based on CT were used as indicators of the reliability of the modified classification system. All patients were retrospectively assessed for screw placement-related complications throughout the entire treatment course to evaluate the relationship between the procedure adequacy and neurological symptoms. RESULTS The interobserver and intraobserver agreements were substantial-to-almost perfect (κ=0.78 and 0.88, respectively) in distinguishing the acceptable-placed pedicle screws from those with partial or complete cortical perforation. In the MCP and LCP-the most common types of misplacement-the interobserver agreement was substantial (κ=0.70 and 0.76, respectively), and the intraobserver agreement was almost perfect (κ=0.85 and 0.89, respectively). In total, there are 7 (2.05%) MCP and 65 (19.01%) LCP screws. The screw placement-related complication rate is significantly higher in the MCP and FP groups than that in the LCP group. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that using a pedicle screw classification and grading system based on CT to assess the accuracy of CBT screw placement is feasible and practical. MCP and FP screws are more likely to cause neurological deficits with statistical significance, especially grade 2 MCP. We recommend inexperienced surgeons choose a lateral trajectory rather than a medial one if they cannot ensure accurate screw insertion. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III.

In this paper, an extension of the result of Wang et al. (“Modeling pulsed laser ablation of aluminum with finite element analysis considering material moving front,” Int. J. Heat & Mass Transfer, 113, 1246–1253, 2017) concerning the problem of uncertainty quantification for pulsed laser ablation (PLA) of aluminum is considered, when the source of uncertainty is due to an inherent randomness of the temperature-dependent absorption coefficient. In particular, we use a generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) method to incorporate the parameter uncertainty for the temperature-dependent absorption coefficient within the representation of the laser heat conduction phenomena. Furthermore, numerical simulation studies for the PLA of aluminum, with nanosecond Nd:YAG 266 nm pulsed laser, that demonstrate the proposed gPC predictions are presented. Finally, a sensitivity study is performed to identify whether small changes in the lower and/or upper parameter values of the absorption coefficient provide the most variance in the thermal and ablation responses.

Microholes in a metal with diameters varying unusually at different hole depths (e.g., microholes with a decreasing and then increasing diameter with the depth) have important applications. This paper reports studies on a novel method of drilling such microholes in a metal, which is through “double-pulse” percussion laser drilling followed by laser-induced plasma (from a backing plate placed behind the workpiece) – hole interaction. Using this method, a through microhole has been produced in a metal workpiece, which has similar diameters at the hole entrance and exit, but a much smaller diameter at a certain waist section inside the hole.
