Abstract Background Compared with aerial plant tissues (such as leaf, stem, and flower), root-associated microbiomes play an indisputable role in promoting plant health and productivity. We thus explored the similarities and differences between rhizosphere and root endosphere bacterial community in the grafted apple system. Results Using pot experiments, three microhabitats (bulk soil, rhizosphere and root endosphere) samples were obtained from two-year-old apple trees grafted on the four different rootstocks. We then investigated the bacterial community composition, diversity, and co-occurrence network in three microhabitats using the Illumina sequencing methods. Only 63 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) out of a total of 24,485 were shared in the rhizosphere and root endosphere of apple grafted on the four different rootstocks (M9T337, Malus hupehensis Rehd., Malus robusta Rehd., and Malus baccata Borkh.). The core microbiome contained 8 phyla and 25 families. From the bulk soil to the rhizosphere to the root endosphere, the members of the phylum and class levels demonstrated a significant enrichment and depletion pattern. Co-occurrence network analysis showed the network complexity of the rhizosphere was higher than the root endosphere. Most of the keystone nodes in both networks were classified as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidetes and were low abundance species. Conclusion The hierarchical filtration pattern existed not only in the assembly of root endosphere bacteria, but also in the core microbiome. Moreover, most of the core ASVs were high-abundance species, while the keystone ASVs of the network were low-abundance species.

This study develops an analytical framework that takes a dynamic game approach to links between water markets and payments for watershed services (PWS). Using a case study of the eastern route of China's South-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP-ER), this study explores the changing behavior of various stakeholders in the water market in different PWS scenarios and the economic rationality driving these behaviors. This study argues that linking water markets and PWS would improve the benefits for each stakeholder, thus making it an economic rationale that drives water suppliers to provide water quality maintenance and improvement services. In addition, introducing intensive incentives for PWS in water markets can make it possible to improve profitability and water quality simultaneously. Finally, linking water markets and PWS remains challenging because the differences in the nature of the two markets lead to divergent views on the distribution of their profits.

Abstract A novel 1440‐V 4H‐SiC accumulation mode MOSFET (ACCUFET) with ultra‐low specific on‐resistance and improved reverse recovery performance is proposed in this article. As for the proposed SiC ACCUFET, the channel region can be completely depleted by the P‐type heavily doped polysilicon gate to build an electron barrier and realize a normally‐off device. And a Schottky barrier diode (SBD) is integrated below the trench gates on both sides, which brings the feasibility of realizing reverse conduction function of the proposed ACCUFET. Also, the p‐shield regions under the Schottky contact metal provide a good electric field shielding effect for the gate oxide. Compared with the conventional SiC trench MOSFET, the numerical simulation results show that the specific on‐resistance (Ron,sp) of the proposed ACCUFET is reduced by more than 64%. The high‐frequency figures‐of‐merit HFOM [Ron,sp × Cgd] and HFOM [Ron,sp × Qgd] of the proposed device are improved by 53.19% and 58.74%, respectively. The reverse recovery time (trr), and reverse recovery charge (Qrr) are reduced by 23.28% and 82.73%, respectively. In addition, the results also indicate that the proposed device has a better latch‐up immunity compared with the conventional SiC trench MOSFET. The excellent device performance and the simple manufacturing process provide a good prospect for the application of the proposed device.

Ecological engineering (EE) has a profound impact on land-use dynamics, leading to alterations in ecosystem services (ESs). However, an appropriate EE implementation intensity that can balance the tradeoffs associated with altered ESs well has always been a concern for researchers and policymakers. In this study, we set the transition probability of farmland, bare land, and desertification land to forest and natural shrub, with 2010–2020 as the natural implementation scenario, as 10% for the low-intensity implementation scenario (LIS), 30% for the medium-intensity scenario, and 50% for the high-intensity scenario. The patch-generating land-use simulation (PLUS) model was used to project land-use patterns and the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Service and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model was used to simulate changes in the quality of ESs under four EE implementation intensities in 2030. We then performed a quantitative tradeoff analysis on the dominant ESs under four scenarios and used the production possibility frontier (PPF) curve to identify the optimal EE implementation intensity scenario. Our results indicated that an increase in EE implementation intensity would lead to an increase in soil retention, water purification, habitat quality, and carbon storage, but also to a decrease in water yield, aggravating the tradeoffs between water yield and other ESs. In all EE implementation intensity scenarios, the LIS had the lowest tradeoff intensity index and balanced ESs well, and thus was the optimal EE implementation scenario in Qinghai province. Our results provide knowledge to help decision makers select the appropriate EE intensity to maintain sustainable development. The integrated methodology can also be applied in other conservation regions to carry out practical land management.

Abstract Background Overaccumulation of chloride (Cl) when plants suffer NaCl causes cell damage and death, and is regulated by Cl – channel protein (CLC). Apple roots are very sensitive to Cl – , but information associated with CLC is limited in apple crop that widely cultivated in the world. Results We identified 9 CLCs from the apple genome and divided them into two subclasses. Among them, MdCLC-c1 promoter contained the largest number of cis-acting elements associated with NaCl stress, and only the MdCLC-c1, MdCLC-d, and MdCLC-g were predicted that may be Cl– antiporters or channels. Expression analysis of MdCLCs homologs in the roots of Malus hupehensis showed that most of the MhCLCs expression were response to NaCl stress, especially MhCLC-c1 expression was upregulated continuously and rapidly expressed during NaCl treatment. Therefore, we isolated MhCLC-c1 and observed it was a plasma membrane-localized protein. The MhCLC-c1 suppression significantly increased sensitivity, reactive oxygen species content, and cell death of apple calli; while MhCLC-c1 overexpression decreased sensitivity, reactive oxygen species content, and cell death of apple calli and Arabidopsis by inhibiting intracellular Cl– accumulation under NaCl stress. Conclusions The study selected and isolated a CLC-c gene MhCLC-c1 from Malus hupehensis based on identification of CLCs gene family in apple, and their homologs MhCLCs expression patterns during NaCl treatments, revealing that MhCLC-c1 alleviates NaCl-induced cell death by inhibiting intracellular Cl– accumulation. Our findings confer the comprehensive and in-depth upstanding of the mechanism that plants resist salt stress, and might also confer genetic improvement of salt tolerance in horticultural crops and the development and utilization of saline–alkali land.

Abstract The deposition of different atmospheric mercury (Hg) species into oceans determines the atmospheric Hg lifetime and the production of neurotoxin methylmercury. Yet, the relative contribution of atmospheric Hg(II) and Hg(0) is largely unconstrained. Here, we report the concentrations of total Hg and methylmercury, as well as Hg isotope composition in living corals collected from the tropical South China Sea (SCS). The results show that the Hg in corals is mainly present as inorganic Hg, exhibiting slightly negative δ202Hg and small yet significant Δ199Hg and Δ200Hg. These isotope features closely resemble those of pelagic waters, suggesting that shallow‐water corals that are widely distributed in oligotrophic waters could be used to trace atmospheric Hg deposition pathways. A mixture model based on coral Δ200Hg indicates that approximately 49% of the seawater Hg in the tropical SCS, a region characterized by high rainfall, originates from atmospheric gaseous Hg(0), much larger than previous estimates.

The development of new energy sources is imminent for solving the crucial problems in resources and environment fields. Due to national resource endowment, the consumption of energy in developing countries is inevitably increasing. This paper predicts new energy electricity generation for representatives of developing countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). A new compound accumulation grey model is proposed by introducing two adjusting factors. The parameters of the model are obtained by using particle swarm optimization algorithm. The accuracy and applicability of the model are verified by four cases. The new energy electricity generation of these countries from 2023 to 2030 is predicted based on the new energy generation data from 2014 to 2022 released by British Petroleum. The results show that these countries have a certain degree of growth in new energy generation. Among them, China has the largest amount of new energy generation. By 2030, the wind power in China will reach 1560 TW-hours, solar power generation will reach 1240 TW -hours. The results of prediction can provide reference for related departments.

Objective: To evaluate the prognostic ability of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) combine with quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) criteria in predicting the 28-day mortality of sepsis. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, with the population comprised in whom sepsis was confirmed. Clinical and laboratory data recorded were analyzed. The score of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), SII, qSOFA were calculated. Multivariable regression, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and Kaplan-Meier method were used to identify and compared the predictors of prognosis among SOFA, qSOFA, and the combination of SII with qSOFA. Results: A total of 349 patients admitted from December 2020 and December 2022 were included in the cohort. 95 (27.2%) of whom had died by day 28. The SII, SOFA, and qSOFA scores were significant higher in the non-survivors than that of survivors (P 1.7668) and qSOFA (>1) represented a high risk level in 28-day mortality of sepsis, were performed and identified in Kaplan-Meier survival curves (log-rank test, HR: 6.942, 95% CI: 3.976–12.121; P

Objective: Reyanning mixture has been demonstrated to be effective in treating infected patients during the outbreak pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Shanghai 2022. The aim of this study is to further investigate the role of Reyanning mixture specifically in the treatment of elderly patients.Methods: This study enrolled 1,102 elderly patients who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant. Of these, 291 patients received Reyanning mixture in conjunction with conventional Western medicine treatment were assigned to the treatment group, while 811 patients only received conventional Western medicine treatment were assigned to the control group. Clinical parameters including hospitalization duration, viral shedding time, and Cycle Threshold (Ct) values of novel coronavirus nucleic acid tests, as well as adverse events were recorded and analyzed in both groups.Results: There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics between two groups. In comparison to the control group, the treatment group demonstrated a substantial difference in hospitalization duration (median: 8 days vs. 10 days, HR: 0.638, 95% CI: 0.558–0.731, p < 0.001). The treatment group also showed a significantly shorter viral shedding time compared to the control group (median: 7 days vs. 8 days, HR: 0.754, 95% CI: 0.659–0.863, p < 0.001). Multivariate Cox proportional-hazards model analysis indicated that the use of Reyanning mixture was closely associated with a reduction in hospitalization duration (HR: 1.562, 95% CI: 1.364–1.789, p < 0.001) and viral shedding time (HR: 1.335, 95% CI: 1.166–1.528, p < 0.001). In addition, during the treatment process, no serious adverse event occurred in either group.Conclusion: The improvement of clinical parameters in the treatment group indicate a promising therapeutic benefit of Reyanning mixture for elderly patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in the present study. Further investigations are required to validate this finding by examining the underlying mechanism and function of Reyanning mixture.

There are some concerns about the safety of live attenuated yellow fever vaccines (YF–live), particularly viscerotropic adverse events, which have a high mortality rate. The cellular production of the vaccine will not cause these adverse effects and has the potential to extend applicability to those who have allergic reactions, immunosuppression, and age. In this study, inactivated yellow fever (YF) was prepared and adsorbed with Alum/CpG. The cellular and humoral immunities were investigated in a mouse model. The results showed that Alum/CpG (20 μg/mL) could significantly increase the binding and neutralizing activities of the antibodies against YF. Moreover, the antibody level at day 28 after one dose was similar to that of the attenuated vaccine, but significantly higher after two doses. At the same time, Alum/CpG significantly increased the levels of IFN-γ and IL-4 cytokines.

IntroductionMulti-walled nanotubes (MWCNTs) consist of multiple rolled layers of graphene. Nitrogen plays an important role in apple growth. The effect of MWCNTs on nitrogen utilization in apple needs to be further investigated.MethodsIn this study, the woody plant Malus hupehensis seedlings were used as plant materials, the distribution of MWCNTs in the roots was observed, and the effects of MWCNTs on the accumulation, distribution, and assimilation of nitrate by the seedlings were explored.ResultsThe results showed that MWCNTs could penetrate the roots of Malus hupehensis seedlings, and the 50, 100, and 200 µg·mL-1 MWCNTs significantly promoted the root growth of seedlings, increased root number, root activity, fresh weight, and nitrate content of seedlings, and also increased nitrate reductase activity, free amino acid, and soluble protein content of roots and leaves. 15N tracer experiments indicated that MWCNTs decreased the distribution ratio of 15N-KNO3 in Malus hupehensis roots but increased its distribution ratio in stems and leaves. MWCNTs improved the utilization ratio of 15N-KNO3 in Malus hupehensis seedlings, with the values being increased by 16.19%, 53.04%, and 86.44% following the 50, 100, and 200 µg·mL-1 MWCNTs, respectively. The RT-qPCR analysis showed that MWCNTs significantly affected the expression of genes (MhNRTs) related to nitrate uptake and transport in roots and leaves, and MhNRT1.4, MhNRT1.7, MhNRT1.8, MhNRT2.1, MhNRT2.5, and MhNRT2.7 were notably up-regulated in response to 200 µg·mL-1 MWCNTs. Raman analysis and transmission electron microscopy images indicated that MWCNTs could enter the root tissue of Malus hupehensis and were distributed between the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane. Pearson correlation analysis showed that root tip number, root fractal dimension, and root activity were the main factors affecting root uptake and assimilation of nitrate.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that MWCNTs promoted root growth by entering the root, stimulated the expression of MhNRTs, and increased NR activity, thereby enhancing the uptake, distribution, and assimilation of nitrate by root, and ultimately improved the utilization of 15N-KNO3 by Malus hupehensis seedlings.

Abstract Background Calcium (Ca) deficiency can cause apple bitter pit, reduce the quality and shelf life. WRKY transcription factors play essential role in plant response to multiple disorders. However, the underlying mechanisms causing bitter pit in apple fruit due to Ca deficiency during storage is extremely limited. Results In the present study, the nutritional metabolites and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were compared in Ca-deficient and healthy apple fruit (CK) during storage. Results showed that Ca-deficient apples sustained significantly higher production of ROS, PPO activity, flavonoids, total phenol, total soluble solids (TSS), and sucrose contents, but the contents of Ca, H2O2, titratable acids (TA), glucose and fructose were significantly lower than those of CK during storage. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that TSS, •O2 −, PPO, malondialdehyde (MDA) and Ca were the main factors, and TSS had a positive correlation with sucrose. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis revealed that WRKYs were co-expressed with sucrose metabolism-related enzymes (SWEETs, SS, SPS). qRT-PCR and correlation analysis indicated that MdWRKY75 was correlated positively with MdSWEET1. Moreover, transient overexpression of MdWRKY75 could significantly increase the sucrose content and promote the expression of MdSWEET1 in apple fruit. Conclusions Calcium deficiency could decrease antioxidant capacity, accelerate nutritional metabolism and up-regulate the expression of WRKYs in apple with bitter pit. Overexpression of MdWRKY75 significantly increased sucrose accumulation and the expression of MdSWEET1. These findings further strengthened knowledge of the basic molecular mechanisms in calcium deficiency apple flesh and contributed to improving the nutritional quality of apple fruit.

An ultra-low specific on-resistance 4H-SiC power laterally diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) device is proposed for 1200V-class applications. In the proposed SiC LDMOS device, a double-trench gate is introduced to reduce the channel region resistance. And a p-type variation lateral doping (VLD) region is also employed in the drift region, which not only optimizes the surface electric field and improves the breakdown voltage, but also increases the doping concentration of the N-drift region, resulting in a low drift region resistance. So that, the proposed device achieves an ultra-low specific on-resistance ( ${R} _{\mathrm{ on,sp}}$ ). Numerical Simulation results show that the ${R} _{\mathrm{ on,sp}}$ of the proposed SiC LDMOS is 3.5 $\text{m}\boldsymbol{\Omega }\cdot {\mathrm{ cm}}^{2}$ with a breakdown voltage of ~1460V, which is reduced by more than 46% compared with the conventional field-plate SiC LDMOS with a ${R} _{\mathrm{ on,sp}}$ of 6.6 $\text{m}\boldsymbol{\Omega }\cdot {\mathrm{ cm}}^{2}$ and a breakdown voltage of ~1210V. The transconductance of the proposed device is improved greatly. And the trade-off relationship between the ${R} _{\mathrm{ on,sp}}$ and the breakdown voltage is also significantly improved compared with those of the conventional device and the previous literature.

Backgrounds: Ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) reduces healthcare cost and increases hospital bed capacity. Currently, there is no consensus on patient selection for ambulatory LC. Evaluation of risk factors for ambulatory discharge is essential. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent LC in our centre throughout 2019 were collected. We evaluated the discharge fitness using the Post-Anaesthetic Discharge Scoring System at 8 h after the operation. The relations between pre-operative variables and dischargeable possibilities were analysed for screening risk factors. Furthermore, we performed a literature review to summarise all published information. Results: Six hundred and forty-one cases were included in this study. American Society of Anaesthesiologist (ASA) grading (odds ratio OR = 0.415, P = 0.001) and leucocytes (OR = 0.80, P < 0.001) significantly predicted the fitness of discharge. ASA contributed to lower activity (P = 0.002) and intake/output (P = 0.006) scores. Leucocytes influence the vital sign (P < 0.001) and pain or post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) (P < 0.001) scores. The prolonged operation could predict the inabilities of discharge with a cut-off value of 55 min by dropping vital signs (P = 0.011), activity (P < 0.001) and pain or PONV (P = 0.012) scores. Male sex (OR: 1.702, P = 0.010), body mass index (BMI) (OR: 1.087, P = 0.008), leucocytes (OR: 1.075, P = 0.017) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (OR: 1.018, P = 0.003) were predictors for prolonged operation (>55 min). Conclusions: We suggest that pre-operative ASA grading III and leucocytes are risk factors for the fitness of ambulatory discharge after LC and intraoperative time. Male, BMI and CRP predict complicated surgery, and they should be considered preoperatively.

Although coral bleaching caused by high temperatures has attracted great concern, the response of the coral microbiome to bleaching has not been thoroughly explored. In this study, bacterial communities from 26 genera of semi-bleached coral in the South China Sea were studied using high-throughput sequencing during El Niño. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) indicated that the effect of early bleaching exceeded the effect of coral species on the bacterial communities. Bleaching caused significant changes in coral bacterial communities. Burkholderiales, Caulobacterales, Pseudomonadales, Cytophagales, Oceanospirillales, and Rhodobacterales, were significantly enriched in bleaching coral, whereas Rhizobiales, Cyanobacteria, Microtrichales, Thermoanaerobaculales, Lachnospirales, Rickettsiales, and Lactobacillales, decreased in abundance. Core bacterial OTUs (operational taxonomic units) showed that high temperatures facilitated potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as Alcaligenes, Escherichia, Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, and Enterobacteriaceae to occupy core positions. Further bleaching resulted in a significant reduction of potential core probiotics in corals. This could increase the risk of corals contracting diseases and reduce their environmental adaptability. Network analysis indicated that the bacterial interactions in bleaching coral were more complex than unbleached coral. Bacteroidales, Burkholderiales, Caulobacterales, Lactobacillales and Rhizobiales were the main taxa that interacted with other bacteria in bleaching and unbleached corals. The presence of these dominant taxa resulted in an increase in chemoheterotrophy, hydrocarbon degradation, nitrogen respiration, and denitrification, which led to great changes in the coral microenvironment. This study comprehensively revealed the response mechanism of coral bacteria during the bleaching process.

ObjectiveTo evaluate determinants of prolonged viral RNA shedding in hospitalized patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infection.Materials and methodsHospitalized patients tested SARS-CoV-2 positive by nasopharyngeal real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were included in the single-center, retrospective study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the timing of viral clearance (≤ 8 days, “early clearance” and ≥15 days, “late clearance”).Results4,084 patients were included in the study (1,023 late clearance, 3,061 early clearance), with median age of 50 years and a higher proportion (61.4%) of male. Univariate analyses showed that comorbidities (including hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart disease), receiving vaccine, the number of vaccinations, cycle threshold (Ct) open reading frame 1ab (ORF 1ab), and nucleocapsid protein (N) gene values on admission were associated with late viral clearance. In the multivariable analysis, the number of vaccinations (P = 0.010) and Ct ORF 1ab gene (P < 0.001) values on admission were significantly associated with late viral clearance. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) analysis showed that the Ct value of ORF 1ab gene and N gene remained unchanged within 3 days, and showed progressively higher values with increasing days during late viral RNA clearance.ConclusionThe number of vaccinations and Ct values of ORF 1ab gene were independently associated with a prolonged SARS-CoV-2 RNA shedding.

The contribution of forestry to achieving carbon neutrality lies in offsetting carbon emissions by implementing certified emission reduction through afforestation projects. However, measurable carbon sinks from China's national key forestry ecology projects have not been able to offset carbon emissions and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality. To promote successful trading of forest carbon sinks in carbon market, we conducted a review to highlight difficulties in project cycle and indicators in measuring climate effectiveness. The results of the current review showed that forestry has the advantage of achieving higher emission reduction targets at a low cost. The initial goals of increasing carbon sinks and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are prerequisites for forestry projects to enter the carbon market. The offset ratio is significant for ensuring the additionality of forest carbon sinks and reducing the risk of crowding out. It should be noted the carbon trading mechanism plays a positive role in mobilizing private sector to reduce emissions, but it may ignore forestry protection in remote areas that have high emission reduction costs and are far from market.

Background and aim: Presently, over-the-counter drugs that can treat upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) are rarely effective and safe. Chaiqin Qingning Capsule (CQQNC), a Chinese patent medicine, which has been verified by long-term clinical practice is recommended by Chinese experts for the treatment of URTI with fever. This study conducted a prospective, double-blinded, randomized, multicenter controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CQQNC in the treatment of URTI. Methods: The study was conducted at 4 clinical centers in China. Eligible subjects were recruited and randomized 1:1 to the CQQNC group and Qingkailing Capsule (QKLC) group. Both groups were administered orally three times a day for three consecutive days. Primary outcomes were the antipyretic onset time and the temperature recovery time. Secondary outcomes included the symptom disappearance rate, symptom score, and drug safety assessment. Results: A total of 269 subjects were analyzed (134 subjects in the CQQNC group, 135 subjects in the QKLC group). The mechanism of reducing deforestation emissions in developing countries (REDD+) could play an increased role in climate mitigation by determining country-specific emission baselines. An impact evaluation able to assess the baselines change in response to carbon payments must be considered in order to highlight effective baselines. In this study, we proposed dynamic baselines and developed a forest-carbon-economy system-dynamic model to assess reduced deforestation emissions and payments for emission reductions. We conducted a comparative analysis from five countries, which were representatives of four forest country types. The results showed that the average dynamic baselines were lower than static baselines in Brazil, Cameroon, Guyana and Indonesia. It implied, in the context of limited climate funding, use of dynamic baselines will help REDD+ achieve more cost-efficient emissions reductions in these countries. Furthermore, the uncertainty analysis of the key parameters showed that different data sources of carbon density, carbon prices and changes in agricultural product prices affect emission reductions. Thus, when a country has high flexibility in determining data sources, it may choose profitable data under alternative data sources, which can compromise the climate effectiveness and cost efficiency of the entire REDD+ mechanism.

International trade of goods is also flows of CO2. As a key exporter of harvested wood products (HWPs), China emits a large amount of CO2 to meet the consumption of other countries. This article uses an MRIO model to quantify the embodied CO2 emissions of China’s HWP sectors in international trade based on the WIOD database. China’s CO2 emissions from a production perspective were 121.25 Mt, more than four times those from a consumption perspective. China was a net exporter for embodied CO2 in HWP sectors, while the US was China’s largest importer. In addition, the furniture sector exported more embodied CO2 by international trade than those from the wood and paper sectors. Based on the unbalances of exports and imports, establishing a common international standard to share the responsibility for CO2 emissions is of great urgency in HWP sectors. This article facilitates promoting CO2 emission reduction in HWP sectors and references China’s future participation in international trade and environmental negotiations.

Harvested wood products (HWP) play an important role in global climate change mitigation. The Production Approach, an internationally accepted HWP carbon accounting approach by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has been revised several times to enhance the accuracy of the accounting results. This study compared the methodological differences in the Production Approach elaborated in the 2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol (PA2013) and 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (PA2019). We used PA2019 to calculate the HWP carbon stock in China under different wood utilization scenarios. In terms of recycling and reusing of recovered paper, we found that PA2019 has a more accurate representation of the increasing proportion of paper and paperboard materials produced using recovered paper in the world. In 2019, the HWP carbon stock in China was 815.94 Mt (1 Mt = 106 t) using PA2019. In detail, the carbon stock of sawnwood, wood-based panels, and paper and paperboard were 208.52 Mt, 559.73 Mt, and 47.69 Mt, respectively. Scenario simulation results show that half-life was an important factor that affecting HWP carbon stock. China can improve HWP carbon stock by increasing the recovered paper utilization rate for paper products or increasing the utilization rate of HWP with long half-life in construction (structural material). The additional carbon stock obtained by changing the utilization structure of wood and improve the half-life of HWP will not be large until decades later but nonetheless important.

Reducing emissions due to deforestation is considered a low-cost option for mitigating climate change. However, the recent literature suggests higher opportunity costs because of specific deforestation drivers, which render reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) for mitigating climate change an uncertain, less attractive, and controversial option. Indonesia is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters. Since 1989, 53.80% of its oil palm expansion has come from forestlands, which has generated a significant amount of carbon emissions. This study uses official data and results from the relevant literature to estimate the costs of oil palm-based deforestation under various scenario assumptions, including different output prices, yields, time horizons, and discount rates. We also calculate the additional cost to preserve a 1-ha forest. We demonstrate that the average opportunity cost from avoiding oil palm-based deforestation is 24.42 USD/tCO2eq in Indonesia, approximately 1.3 times the 2011 EUA carbon price. Additional sums of around 5,466.90–11,042.96 USD/ha should be provided to landowners for the deforestation avoidance caused by oil palm expansion. Special attention should be given to the extensive oil palm expansion in Indonesia and the resulting high opportunity costs for achieving the REDD+ ​target.

The role of microbial ecology in aquaculture is becoming increasingly significant; however, studies on the changes in microbial ecology driven by the culture environment are limited. In the present study, high-throughput sequencing and chemical analysis was used to explore changes in physicochemical factors, bacterial communities, and their relationships between a water source (Bay) and an aquaculture area located in a reclaimed area. Statistical analysis results revealed that operational taxonomic units levels in inlet water and pond water varied significantly (p < 0.05). Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis revealed the distribution characteristics of bacterial communities with water properties. The abundance of Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Flavobacteria in pond water increased significantly when compared to inlet water. The abundance of heterotrophic bacteria, such as Candidatus Actinomarina, Candidatus Aquiluna, Marivita, and Vibrio genera in pond water was significantly higher (Welch’s t-tests, p < 0.05) than inlet water. Functional prediction analysis primarily revealed an increase in the function that was associated with carbon and nitrogen metabolism in the pond environment. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that the bacterial communities was predominantly influenced by inorganic nutrients. Nitrate-nitrogen (N), nitrite-N, ammonium-N, and phosphate-phosphorous (P) were the key factors influencing bacterial communities in pond environment. A significant correlation was observed between inorganic N and phosphorus (P), and dominant bacterial genera (p < 0.05), demonstrating the potential mechanism of regulation of nutrients in bacterial communities. The present study described the microbial ecology of aquaculture ponds in detail and provides a scientific basis for the management of aquacultural environments.

Sulfur is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development. Sulfate transporters (Sultrs) are critical for sulfate (SO42-) uptake from the soil by the roots in higher plants. However, knowledge about Sultrs in apples (Malus domestica) is scarce. Here, nine putative MdSultrs were identified and classified into two groups according to the their phylogenetic relationships, gene structures, and conserved motifs. Various cis-regulatory elements related to abiotic stress and plant hormone responsiveness were found in the promoter regions of MdSultrs. These MdSultrs exhibited tissue-specific expression patterns and responded to low sulfur (S), abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), wherein MdSultr3;1a was especially expressed in the roots and induced by low S. The uptake of SO42- in cultivated apples depends on the roots of its rootstock, and MhSultr3;1a was isolated from Malus hupehensis roots used as a rootstock. MhSultr3;1a shared 99.85% homology with MdSultr3;1a and localized on the plasma membrane and nucleus membrane. Further function characterization revealed that MhSultr3;1a complemented an SO42- transport-deficient yeast mutant and improved the growth of yeast and apple calli under low S conditions. The MhSultr3;1a-overexpressing apple calli had a higher fresh weight compared with the wild type (WT) under a low-S treatment because of the increased SO42- and cysteine (Cys) content. These results demonstrate that MhSultr3;1a may increase the content of SO42- and Cys to meet the demands of S-containing compounds and improve their growth under S-limiting conditions.

Malus is an economically important plant that is widely cultivated worldwide, but it often encounters saline–alkali stress. The composition of saline–alkali land is a variety of salt and alkali mixed with the formation of alkaline salt. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been reported to have positive effects on plant responses to abiotic stresses. Our previous study showed that H2S pretreatment alleviated the damage caused by alkaline salt stress to Malus hupehensis Rehd. var. pingyiensis Jiang (Pingyi Tiancha, PYTC) roots by regulating Na+/K+ homeostasis and oxidative stress. In this study, transcriptome analysis was used to investigate the overall mechanism through which H2S alleviates alkaline salt stress in PYTC roots. Simultaneously, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were explored. Transcriptional profiling of the Control-H2S, Control-AS, Control-H2S + AS, and AS-H2S + AS comparison groups identified 1618, 18,652, 16,575, and 4314 DEGs, respectively. Further analysis revealed that H2S could alleviate alkaline salt stress by increasing the energy maintenance capacity and cell wall integrity of M. hupehensis roots and by enhancing the capacity for reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism because more upregulated genes involved in ROS metabolism and sulfur-containing compounds were identified in M. hupehensis roots after H2S pretreatment. qRT-PCR analysis of H2S-induced and alkaline salt-response genes showed that these genes were consistent with the RNA-seq analysis results, which indicated that H2S alleviation of alkaline salt stress involves the genes of the cell wall and sulfur-containing compounds in PYTC roots.

Excessive cadmium (Cd) damages plants by causing cell death. The present study discusses the function of natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (NRAMP) on cell death caused by Cd in Malus hupehensis. MhNRAMP1 was isolated from M. hupehensis roots, and its protein was located in the cell membrane as a transmembrane protein characterized by hydrophobicity. MhNRAMP1 expression in the roots was induced by Cd stress and calcium (Ca) deficiency. MhNRAMP1 overexpression increased Cd concentration in yeasts and enhanced their sensitivity to Cd. Phenotypic comparisons of plants under Cd stress revealed that the growth of transgenic tobacco and apple calli overexpressing MhNRAMP1 was worse than that of the wild type (WT). The Cd2+ influx of transgenic tobacco roots and apple calli was higher, and the recovery time of the Cd2+ influx to a stable state in transgenic apple calli was longer than that of the WT. Cd accumulation and the percentage of apoptotic cells in transgenic lines were higher. Correspondingly, the caspase-1-like and vacuolar processing enzyme (VPE) activities and MdVPEγ expression were higher in transgenic apple calli, but the expression levels of genes that inhibit cell death were lower than those in the WT under Cd stress. Moreover, the Cd translocation from the roots to leaves was increased after MhNRAMP1 overexpression, but the Cd translocation from the leaves to seeds was not affected. These results suggest that MhNRMAP1 exacerbated Cd-induced cell death, which was accomplished by mediating Cd2+ uptake and accumulation, as well as stimulating VPE.

Vacuolar processing enzymes (VPEs) play an important role in stress resistance and development of plants. Despite their diverse roles, little information is available in apple (Malus × domestic). This study firstly presents the genome-wide identification of VPE family genes in apple, resulting in 20 family members those are unevenly distributed across six out of the 17 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis assigned these genes into four groups. Analysis of exon–intron junctions and motifs of each candidate gene revealed high levels of conservation within and between phylogenetic groups. Cis-element including w box, ABRE, LTR, and TC-rich repeats were found in promoters of MdVPEs. NCBI-GEO database shown that the expression of MdVPEs exhibited diverse patterns in different tissues as well as the infection of Pythium ultimum and Apple Stem Grooving Virus. Furthermore, qRT-PCR showed that MdVPE genes were responsive to salt, cadmium, low-temperature, and drought. Overexpression of MDP0000172014, which was strongly induced by salt and drought stress, significantly decreased Arabidopsis tolerance to salt stress. The genome-wide identification and characterization of MdVPEs in apple provided basic information for the potential utilization of MdVPEs in stress resistance.

With the abnormal rise in ocean temperatures globally in recent years, coral bleaching is becoming common and serious. However, the response mechanisms and processes of coral symbionts to bleaching are not well understood. In this study, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics were used to explore the composition of coral symbionts and their functions in response to coral bleaching. All four bleaching coral species displayed a significant reduction of the abundance and function of Dinophyceae-like eukaryotes at the DNA and RNA levels. However, different species of bleaching coral have their own characteristic symbiotic components. Bleaching Acropora tenuis and Goniastrea minuta corals exhibited a very high abundance of prokaryotes and associated gene functions, especially for opportunistic bacteria. In contrast, algae and fungi were identified as the main microbial associate components and had relatively high RNA abundance in bleaching Pocillopora verrucosa and Pocillopora meandrina. Different coral species, whether unbleached or bleaching, have the same symbiotic taxa that perform the same biological functions in vivo. Different stages of bleaching, or transitional states, were identified by different genome content and functional gene abundance among bleaching corals. These stages should be considered in future coral bleaching studies to accurately determine symbiont structure and function. An implicit hypothesis is that there is a causal relationship between the stability of eukaryotic communities and coral bleaching.

The China-France Oceanography SATellite (CFOSAT), launched on 29 October 2018, is a joint mission developed by China and France. To evaluate the CFOSAT wind product, L2B swath data with a spatial resolution of 25 × 25 km were compared with in situ measurements between December 2018 and December 2020. The in situ measurements were collected from 217 buoys. All buoy winds were adjusted to 10 m height using a simple logarithmic correction method. The temporal and spatial separations between the CFOSAT and in situ measurements were restricted to less than 30 min and 0.25°. The results indicate that the CFOSAT wind retrievals agree well with the buoy measurements. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) of wind vectors were 1.39 m s−1 and 34.32° and negligible biases were found. In the near shore under rain-free conditions, the RMSEs were enhanced to 1.42 m s−1 and 33.43°. Similarly, the RMSEs were reduced to 1.16 m s−1 and 30.41° offshore after the rain effect was removed. After winds less than 4 m s−1 were removed, the RMSE of wind directions was reduced to 19.69°. The effects of significant wave height, air-sea temperature difference, sea surface temperature, atmospheric pressure and ocean surface current on the wind residuals were assessed. The performance of wind retrievals under the passage of tropical cyclones was evaluated. The evaluation results show that the CFOSAT wind retrievals satisfy the accuracy requirements of scientific research, although some improvements are needed to enhance the performance.

To explore the expression levels of galectin-3 in colorectal cancer and the association between galectin-3 and its clinical pathological parameters, as well as the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients.

China boasts a large production, import, and export volume of harvested wood products (HWP). The production, trade volume, and carbon stock of HWP can be used as valuable reference data for the economic growth and the participation of China in climatic negotiation. This research counts the production of major Chinese HWP between 1961 and 2012 according to the HWP classification standards of the Food and Agricultural Organization. The total forestry production value of China reached RMB 3,950 billion in 2012. The total forestry production value and the HWP production of China have been rising steadily. By applying the carbon accounting model of HWP under the stock change approach, this research estimates and analyzes the carbon stock of Chinese HWP from 1961 to 2012. The development of Chinese HWP inventories within this period can be roughly divided into three phases, which show a general uptrend. In 2012, the total carbon stock of Chinese HWP reached 888.01 million tons, whereas the annual increment of Chinese HWP reached 50.78 million tons. Therefore, HWP significantly contributes to the positive growth of Chinese carbon stock.

Life cycle analysis on wood-based panels in terms of CO2 flux can be used to quantitatively assess the climate change contributions of these materials. In this study, the annual CO2 flux between 1990 and 2015 was calculated through gate-to-gate life cycle analysis of wood-based panels. As implied by the energy consumption standards, China’s wood-based panels used to be carbon sources during the period 1990–2007, with the average contribution to CO2 emissions of 9.20 Mt/year. The implementation of new standards and the development of Cleaner production technologies in China, decreased the energy consumption per panel. China’s wood-based panels acted as a carbon sink between 2008 and 2015, with the average contribution to CO2 removal of 31.71 Mt/year. Plywood produced the largest contributions to the emission and removal of CO2, and was followed by fiberboard and particleboard. China’s wood-based panels, with good prospects and strong demands projected in the future, can potentially contribute to climate change mitigation.

Illegal logging, with its related trade of illegally harvested timber, is one of the main environmental and economic problems worldwide. Eliminating illegal timber consumption and production are two practical means to reduce illegal logging. However, the problem of determining which of the two means is more economical remains to be analyzed. In this study, an input–output analysis was conducted to evaluate the consumption and production of illegal timber in different countries. The Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) was employed to analyze the effects of eliminating illegal timber consumption and production on the added value of the forest sector at global and national levels. Results indicated that eliminating illegal timber production is more economical than eliminating consumption at the global level. The former is estimated to decrease the added value of the global forest sector only by 3.37% compared to 7.31% by the latter in 2030. Eliminating the production of illegal timber will result in uneven distribution of social wealth in the forest sector, and will pass the cost of reducing illegal logging onto developing countries. Developed countries would gain more added value and market scale than the global average, whereas developing countries would suffer a loss if illegal timber production is eliminated. Hence, developed countries are encouraged to provide financial support to help developing countries reduce illegal logging.

State-owned forestry enterprises are important elements of the forestry economy in China. The operational efficiency of such enterprises depends on technological progress and other input factors. Total factor productivity (TFP) is an important means to evaluate the efficiency of technical elements. The growth of production efficiency can be classified into efficiency variation and technical variation. The TFP of 135 key state-owned forestry enterprises in the northeast, southwest, and northwest regions of China in 2001–2011 was measured through Malmquist–data envelopment analysis. The technological progress of the state-owned forestry enterprises positively affected TFP variation, but technical efficiency only slightly increased and scale efficiency even negatively affected TFP variation. The average growth rate of TFP in the northwest region is higher than those in the northeast and southwest regions. The Western Development Program of China increasingly contributes to the economic development of western areas. The increasing investment of the government in science and technology accelerates the development of forestry economy in China.
