Abstract Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have garnered significant attention in biomedical research due to their pivotal roles in gene expression regulation and their association with various human diseases. Among these lncRNAs, ArfGAP With RhoGAP Domain, Ankyrin Repeat, And PH Domain 1 - Antisense RNA 1 (ARAP1-AS1) has recently emerged as an novel oncogenic player. ARAP1-AS1 is prominently overexpressed in numerous solid tumors and wields influence by modulating gene expression and signaling pathways. This regulatory impact is realized through dual mechanisms, involving both competitive interactions with microRNAs and direct protein binding. ARAP1-AS1 assumes an important role in driving tumorigenesis and malignant tumor progression, affecting biological characteristics such as tumor expansion and metastasis. This paper provides a concise review of the regulatory role of ARAP1-AS1 in malignant tumors and discuss its potential clinical applications as a biomarker and therapeutic target. We also address existing knowledge gaps and suggest avenues for future research. ARAP1-AS1 serves as a prototypical example within the burgeoning field of lncRNA studies, offering insights into the broader landscape of non-coding RNA molecules. This investigation enhances our comprehension of the complex mechanisms that govern the progression of cancer.

Over the past decades, cancer immunotherapy has encountered challenges such as immunogenicity, inefficiency, and cytotoxicity. Consequently, exosome-based cancer immunotherapy has gained rapid traction as a promising alternative. Exosomes, a type of extracellular vesicles (EVs) ranging from 50 to 150 nm, are self-originating and exhibit fewer side effects compared to traditional therapies. Exosome-based immunotherapy encompasses three significant areas: cancer vaccination, co-inhibitory checkpoints, and adoptive T-cell therapy. Each of these fields leverages the inherent advantages of exosomes, demonstrating substantial potential for individualized tumor therapy and precision medicine. This review aims to elucidate the reasons behind the promise of exosome-based nanoparticles as cancer therapies by examining their characteristics and summarizing the latest research advancements in cancer immunotherapy.

Liver cancer is one of the most lethal gastrointestinal malignancies. Emerging evidence has underscored the pivotal role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in tumorigenesis, with ST8SIA6-AS1 identified as a novel oncogenic lncRNA contributing to liver cancer progression. ST8SIA6-AS1 is consistently upregulated in hepatic cancer tissues and is strongly associated with unfavorable prognosis. Moreover, it demonstrates high diagnostic efficacy in detecting HCC. ST8SIA6-AS1 is involved in various cellular processes including proliferation, migration, and invasion, primarily through its function as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), thereby facilitating hepatocarcinogenesis and disease advancement. This review provides a detailed examination of the molecular functions and regulatory mechanisms of ST8SIA6-AS1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and highlights its potential as a promising biomarker for liver cancer, aiming to propel the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for HCC management.

Abstract Recent studies have increasingly highlighted the aberrant expression of SLC16A1-AS1 in a variety of tumor types, where it functions as either an oncogene or a tumor suppressor in the pathogenesis of different cancers. The expression levels of SLC16A1-AS1 have been found to significantly correlate with clinical features and the prognosis of cancer patients. Furthermore, SLC16A1-AS1 modulates a range of cellular functions, including proliferation, migration, and invasion, through its interactions with diverse molecules and signaling pathways. This review examines the latest evidence regarding the role of SLC16A1-AS1 in the progression of various tumors and explores its potential clinical applications as a novel prognostic and diagnostic biomarker. Our comprehensive review aims to deepen the understanding of SLC16A1-AS1’s multifaceted role in oncology, underscoring its potential as a significant biomarker and therapeutic target.

Approximately one-third of the patients with diabetes worldwide suffer from neuropathic pain, mainly categorized by spontaneous and stimulus-induced pain. Microglia are a class of immune effector cells residing in the central nervous system and play a pivotal role in diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP). Microglia specifically respond to hyperglycemia along with inflammatory cytokines and adenosine triphosphate produced during hyperglycemic damage to nerve fibers. Because of the presence of multiple receptors on the microglial surface, microglia are dynamically and highly responsive to their immediate environment. Following peripheral sensitization caused by hyperglycemia, microglia are affected by the cascade of inflammatory factors and other substances and respond accordingly, resulting in a change in their functional state for DNP pathogenesis. Inhibition of receptors such as P2X reporters, reducing cytokine expression levels in the microglial reactivity mechanisms, and inhibiting their intracellular signaling pathways can effectively alleviate DNP. A variety of drugs attenuate DNP by inhibiting the aforementioned processes induced by microglial reactivity. In this review, we summarize the pathological mechanisms by which microglia promote and maintain DNP, the drugs and therapeutic techniques available, and the latest advances in this field.

Abstract Background Chemoresistance presents a significant obstacle in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), yet the molecular basis underlying CRC chemoresistance remains poorly understood, impeding the development of new therapeutic interventions. Elongation factor Tu GTP binding domain containing 2 (EFTUD2) has emerged as a potential oncogenic factor implicated in various cancer types, where it fosters tumor growth and survival. However, its specific role in modulating the sensitivity of CRC cells to chemotherapy is still unclear. Methods Public dataset analysis and in-house sample validation were conducted to assess the expression of EFTUD2 in 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy-resistant CRC cells and the potential of EFTUD2 as a prognostic indicator for CRC. Experiments both in vitro, including MTT assay, EdU cell proliferation assay, TUNEL assay, and clone formation assay and in vivo, using cell-derived xenograft models, were performed to elucidate the function of EFTUD2 in sensitivity of CRC cells to 5-FU treatment. The molecular mechanism on the reciprocal regulation between EFTUD2 and the oncogenic transcription factor c-MYC was investigated through molecular docking, ubiquitination assay, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), dual luciferase reporter assay, and co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP). Results We found that EFTUD2 expression was positively correlated with 5-FU resistance, higher pathological grade, and poor prognosis in CRC patients. We also demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo that knockdown of EFTUD2 sensitized CRC cells to 5-FU treatment, whereas overexpression of EFTUD2 impaired such sensitivity. Mechanistically, we uncovered that EFTUD2 physically interacted with and stabilized c-MYC protein by preventing its ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation. Intriguingly, we found that c-MYC directly bound to the promoter region of EFTUD2 gene, activating its transcription. Leveraging rescue experiments, we further confirmed that the effect of EFTUD2 on 5-FU resistance was dependent on c-MYC stabilization. Conclusion Our findings revealed a positive feedback loop involving an EFTUD2/c-MYC axis that hampers the efficacy of 5-FU chemotherapy in CRC cells by increasing EFTUD2 transcription and stabilizing c-MYC oncoprotein. This study highlights the potential of EFTUD2 as a promising therapeutic target to surmount chemotherapy resistance in CRC patients.

Abstract Gamma-butyrobetaine hydroxylase 1 antisense RNA 1 (BBOX1-AS1), located on human chromosome 11 p14, emerges as a critical player in tumorigenesis with diverse oncogenic effects. Aberrant expression of BBOX1-AS1 intricately regulates various cellular processes, including cell growth, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, migration, invasion, metastasis, cell death, and stemness. Notably, the expression of BBOX1-AS1 was significantly correlated with clinical-pathological characteristics and tumor prognoses, and it could also be used for the diagnosis of lung and esophageal cancers. Through its involvement in the ceRNA network, BBOX1-AS1 competitively binds to eight miRNAs in ten different cancer types. Additionally, BBOX1-AS1 can directly modulate downstream protein-coding genes or act as an mRNA stabilizer. The implications of BBOX1-AS1 extend to critical signaling pathways, including Hedgehog, Wnt/β-catenin, and MELK/FAK pathways. Moreover, it influences drug resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma. The present study provides a systematic review of the clinical significance of BBOX1-AS1’s aberrant expression in diverse tumor types. It sheds light on the intricate molecular mechanisms through which BBOX1-AS1 influences cancer initiation and progression and outlines potential avenues for future research in this field.

Mechanosensitive ion channel protein 1 (Piezo1) is a large homotrimeric membrane protein. Piezo1 has various effects and plays an important and irreplaceable role in the maintenance of human life activities and homeostasis of the internal environment. In addition, recent studies have shown that Piezo1 plays a vital role in tumorigenesis, progression, malignancy and clinical prognosis. Piezo1 is involved in regulating the malignant behaviors of a variety of tumors, including cellular metabolic reprogramming, unlimited proliferation, inhibition of apoptosis, maintenance of stemness, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis. Moreover, Piezo1 regulates tumor progression by affecting the recruitment, activation, and differentiation of multiple immune cells. Therefore, Piezo1 has excellent potential as an anti-tumor target. The article reviews the diverse physiological functions of Piezo1 in the human body and its major cellular pathways during disease development, and describes in detail the specific mechanisms by which Piezo1 affects the malignant behavior of tumors and its recent progress as a new target for tumor therapy, providing new perspectives for exploring more potential effects on physiological functions and its application in tumor therapy.

LINK-A, also recognized as LINC01139, has emerged as a key oncological lncRNA in cancer. LINK-A is upregulated in solid and liquid tumor samples, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, glioma, non-small-cell lung cancer, and mantle cell lymphoma. Notably, LINK-A is involved in regulating critical cancer-related pathways, such as AKT and HIF1α signaling, and is implicated in a range of oncogenic activities, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cell invasion and migration, and glycolysis reprogramming. LINK-A’s differential expression and its correlation with clinical features enable it to be a promising biomarker for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and the stratification of tumor progression. Additionally, LINK-A’s contribution to the development of resistance to cancer therapies, including AKT inhibitors and immunotherapy, underscores its potential as a therapeutic target. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the available data on LINK-A, focusing on its molecular regulatory pathways and clinical significance. By exploring the multifaceted nature of LINK-A in cancer, the review aims to offer a valuable resource for future research directions, potentially guiding the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting this lncRNA in cancer treatment.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents a leading and fatal malignancy within the gastrointestinal tract. Recent advancements highlight the pivotal role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in diverse biological pathways and pathologies, particularly in tumorigenesis. LINC01134, a particular lncRNA, has attracted considerable attention due to its oncogenic potential in hepatoma. Current research underscores LINC01134’s potential in augmenting the onset and progression of HCC, with notable implications in drug resistance. This review comprehensively explores the molecular functions and regulatory mechanisms of LINC01134 in HCC, offering a fresh perspective for therapeutic interventions. By delving into LINC01134’s multifaceted roles, we aim to foster novel strategies in HCC management.

The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R), a non-selective cation channel modulated by adenosine triphosphate (ATP), localizes to microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and neurons in the central nervous system, with the most incredible abundance in microglia. P2X7R partake in various signaling pathways, engaging in the immune response, the release of neurotransmitters, oxidative stress, cell division, and programmed cell death. When neurodegenerative diseases result in neuronal apoptosis and necrosis, ATP activates the P2X7R. This activation induces the release of biologically active molecules such as pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, proteases, reactive oxygen species, and excitotoxic glutamate/ATP. Subsequently, this leads to neuroinflammation, which exacerbates neuronal involvement. The P2X7R is essential in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. This implies that it has potential as a drug target and could be treated using P2X7R antagonists that are able to cross the blood-brain barrier. This review will comprehensively and objectively discuss recent research breakthroughs on P2X7R genes, their structural features, functional properties, signaling pathways, and their roles in neurodegenerative diseases and possible therapies.

Toddlerhood (aged 13~36 months) is a period of dietary transition, with water intake being significantly influenced by parental feeding patterns, cultural traditions, and the availability of beverages and food. Nevertheless, given the lack of applicable data, it is challenging to guide and evaluate the water intake of toddlers in China. In this study, our objectives were to assess the daily total water intake (TWI), evaluate the consumption patterns of various beverages and food sources contributing to the TWI, determine the conformity of participants to the adequate intake (AI) recommendation of water released by the Chinese Nutrition Society, and analyze the various contributors to the daily total energy intake (TEI). The data for the assessment of water and dietary intake were obtained from the cross-sectional dietary intake survey of infants and young children (DSIYC, 2018–2019). A total of 1360 eligible toddlers were recruited in the analysis. The differences in related variables between two age groups were compared by Mann–Whitney U test and Chi-Square test. The potential correlation between water and energy intake was examined utilizing age-adjusted partial correlation. Toddlers consumed a median daily TWI of 1079 mL, with 670 mL (62.3%, r = 0.752) derived from beverages and 393 mL (37.7%, r = 0.716) from foods. Plain water was the primary beverage source, contributing 300 mL (52.2%, r = 0.823), followed by milk and milk derivatives (MMDs) at 291 mL (45.6%, r = 0.595). Notably, only 28.4% of toddlers managed to reach the recommended AI value. Among these, toddlers obtain more water from beverages than from foods. The median daily TEI of toddlers was 762 kcal, including 272 kcal from beverages (36.4%, r = 0.534) and 492 kcal from foods (63.6%, r = 0.894). Among these, the median daily energy intake from MMDs was 260 kcal, making up 94.6% of the energy intake from beverages (r = 0.959). As the pioneer survey on TWI of toddlers in China based on nationally representative data, attention to the quality and quantity of water intake and actions to better guide parents by both individuals and authorities are eagerly anticipated. Additionally, the revision of the reference value of TWI for Chinese toddlers is urgently required.

The system of gas-liquid two-phase bubbly flows is widely found in many industrial fields, such as nuclear energy, chemical, petroleum, and refrigeration. Bubbly two-phase flows measuring including detection and tracking affects the specific engineering problem solving to a great extent. The particle tracking velocity (PTV) algorithm is generally used for the tracking of the particles in the flow field. However, it does not take the shape change of particles into account in the process of flow. In this paper, a kind of bubble feature matching method based on ORB algorithm is proposed, and the edge detection method of findContours in OpenCV is used to extract the bubble contour in the image. The proposed algorithm implements the trajectory tracking of the bubbles with shape change when moving up in liquid. The feasibility of bubble trajectory tracking is shown by displaying of different bubble tracks in the plan, 3D plots and contour changing plots.

Regional energy systems are designed to contribute to a green and “carbon neutral” economy of localities. In this system, the engine combustion is significant for power generation. Therefore, this study mainly investigated the effect of throttle openings on the combustion characteristics of hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) mixtures to achieve high efficiency. Throttle opening has a strong relationship with combustion performance, particularly for power output and efficiency. Therefore, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 100% throttle openings were tested to obtain higher efficiency for power generation. Combustion characteristics of CH4 and CH4+H2 were also compared. With H2 addition, the volume percentage of H2 varied between 10%, 30%, and 50%. The ratio of air to gas fuel was controlled to determine λ varying from 1.0 to 1.4. Subsequently, the effect of throttle openings under different λ with H2 addition was examined. Finally, brake thermal efficiency (BTE), power output, brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) were compared. Moreover, the maximum value of the cylinder pressure in cycles (Pmax) and the coefficient of variation (COV) in Pmax were discussed. The results showed that the torque and power output decreased slightly from full throttle opening to 40% throttle opening. The 30% H2 addition in Case # 5 (full opening under lean-burn conditions) is the best working condition to satisfy both the power generation and energy-saving requirements in this study. Furthermore, Pmax decreased with smaller throttle opening, and H2 addition increased Pmax. In addition, H2 addition decreased COV, but throttle opening had less effect on COV.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a fatal disease with high mortality and poor prognosis that triggers multiple severe brain injuries associated with an inflammatory cascade response that cannot be treated with any effective medication. Atorvastatin (ATO) suppresses inflammation, alleviates brain trauma, and eliminates subdural hematoma. Dexamethasone (DXM) also has the capacity to inhibit inflammation. Thus, we combined ATO with low-dose DXM to treat ICH mice in vivo to examine whether the combined treatment can inhibit secondary inflammation around the cerebral hemorrhage and decrease overall mortality. Compared to the monotherapy by either ATO or DXM, the combined treatment significantly improves the survivorship of the ICH mice, accelerates their recovery of impaired neurological function, and modulates the circulating cytokines, oxidative products, and apoptosis. Moreover, the benefit of ATO-DXM combination therapy was most pronounced on day 3 after dosing compared to ATO or DXM alone. Thus, early administration of ATO combined with low-dose-DXM promotes better survival of ICH and improves neurological function by reducing neuroinflammation and brain edema in their early phase.

BackgroundGenomic instability (GI) is a critical feature of cancer which plays a key role in the occurrence and development of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD). Long non-coding RNA (LncRNA) is an emerging prognostic biomarker because it is involved in regulating GI. Recently, researchers used such GI-related LncRNAs (GILncRNAs) to establish a prognostic signature for patients with cancer and helped in predicting the overall prognosis of the patients. However, it is evident that patients with PAAD still lack such prognostic signature constructed with GILncRNA.MethodsThe present study screened GILncRNAs from 83 patients with PAAD. Prognosis-related GILncRNAs were identified by univariate Cox regression analysis. The correlation coefficients of these GILncRNAs were obtained by multivariate Cox regression analysis and used to construct a signature. The signature in the present study was then assessed through survival analysis, mutation correlation analysis, independent prognostic analysis, and clinical stratification analysis in the training set and validated in the testing as well as all TCGA set. The current study performed external clinical relevance validation of the signature and validated the effect of AC108134.2 in GILncSig on PAAD using in vitro experiments. Finally, the function of GILncRNA signature (GILncSig) dependent on Gene Ontology enrichment analysis was explored and chemotherapeutic drug sensitivity analysis was also performed.ResultsResults of the present study found that a total of 409 GILncRNAs were identified, 5 of which constituted the prognostic risk signature in this study, namely, AC095057.3, AC108134.2, AC124798.1, AL606834.1, and AC104695.4. It was found that the signature of the present study was better than others in predicting the overall survival and applied to patients with PAAD of all ages, genders, and tumor grades. Further, it was noted that the signature of the current study in the GSE102238, was correlated with tumor length, and tumor stage of patients with PAAD. In vitro, functional experiments were used in the present study to validate that AC108134.2 is associated with PAAD genomic instability and progression. Notably, results of the pRRophetic analysis in the current study showed that the high-risk group possessed reverse characteristics and was sensitive to chemotherapy.ConclusionsIn conclusion, it was evident that the GILncSig used in the present study has good prognostic performance. Therefore, the signature may become a potential sensitive biological indicator of PAAD chemotherapy, which may help in clinical decision-making and management of patients with cancer.

Abstract Background The nutritional status of lactating mothers (LMs) is related to their own health and significantly impacts the secretion of breast-milk, and subsequently the growth and development of infants. Due to the influence of regional economy, traditional habits, and lack of nutrition knowledge, the problem of poor dietary nutrition among Chinese LMs is prominent. We aimed to evaluate and compare the dietary and nutrient intakes in LMs from urban and rural areas in China to provide baseline data for the implementation of relevant health guidance and strategies. Methods A multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit urban and rural LMs from 13 provinces and municipalities in China. An online dietary record using food photographs was employed to keep track of what the LMs had eaten in 2 days in the form of face-to-face interview. Abstract Subdural haematomas (SDHs) are characterized by rapidly or gradually accumulated haematomas between the arachnoid and dura mater. The mechanism of haematoma clearance has not been clearly elucidated until now. The meningeal lymphatic vessel (mLV) drainage pathway is a novel system that takes part in the clearance of waste products in the central nervous system (CNS). This study aimed to explore the roles of the mLV drainage pathway in SDH clearance and its impacting factors. We injected FITC-500D, A488-fibrinogen and autologous blood into the subdural space of mice/rats and found that these substances drained into deep cervical lymph nodes (dCLNs). FITC-500D was also observed in the lymphatic vessels (LYVE+) of the meninges and the dCLNs in mice. The SDH clearance rate in SDH rats that received deep cervical lymph vessel (dCLV) ligation surgery was significantly lower than that in the control group, as evaluated by haemoglobin quantification and MRI scanning. The drainage rate of mLVs was significantly slower after the SDH model was established, and the expression of lymphangiogenesis-related proteins, including LYVE1, FOXC2 and VEGF-C, in meninges was downregulated. In summary, our findings proved that SDH was absorbed through the mLV drainage pathway and that haematomas could inhibit the function of mLVs.

Background Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and microwave ablation (MWA) are regarded as effective therapies for treating unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We conducted this study to compare the efficiency and safety of TACE combined with RFA (TR group) or MWA (TM group). Method PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Ovid Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar were searched. The primary endpoints were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), response rates, and complications. Result Eight cohort studies and one randomized controlled trial were included. The TM group had better OS (Hazard ratio [HR]: 1.55; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09–2.21, p = 0.01) and a better 2- and 3-year OS rate, 24-month PFS rate (Risk ratio [RR]: 0.67; 95% CI: 0.46–0.96, p = 0.03), and complete response rate (RR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.79–0.96, p = 0.003) than the TR group. Furthermore, the TM and TR groups did not show significant differences in PFS, the disease control rate or complications. Tumor invasion, metastasis, and recrudescence remain a considerable challenge in the treatment of gastric cancer (GC). Herein we first identified that RNA binding protein fox-1 homolog 3 (RBFOX3) was markedly overexpressed in GC tissues and negatively linked to the survival rate of GC patients. RBFOX3 promoted cell division and cell cycle progression in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, RBFOX3 increased the cell invasion and migration ability. The suppression of GC cell multiplication and invasion, caused by silencing of RBFOX3, was rescued by HTERT overexpression. Additionally, RBFOX3 augmented the resistance of GC cells to 5-fluorouracil by repressing RBFOX3. Mechanistically, the exogenous up-regulation of RBFOX3 triggered promoter activity and HTERT expression, thereby enhancing the division and the development of GC cells. Further co-immunoprecipitation tests revealed that RBFOX3 bound to AP-2β to modulate HTERT expression. In conclusion, our study indicates that a high expression of RBFOX3 promotes GC progression and development and predicts worse prognosis. Collectively, these results indicate that the RBFOX3/AP-2β/HTERT signaling pathway can be therapeutically targeted to prevent and treat GC recurrence and metastasis.

Faciogenital Dysplasia 1 (FGD1) has been involved in a variety of biological processes, including cytoskeleton restructuring, cell morphology, cell cycle progression, and cell polarity. Abnormal expression of FGD1 was also identified in several types of cancers, indicating its critical role in the development of cancers. However, little is known about the role of FGD1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, the expression of FGD1 in HCC was mined with the RNA sequencing data from the cancer genome atlas. By over-expressing or knocking down of FGD1, the effects of FGD1 on the malignant behavior of HCC were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. We find that FGD1 is up-regulated in HCC and correlated with the development and prognosis of HCC. By over-expressing or knocking down of FGD1, the effects of FGD1 on the malignant behavior of HCC were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of FGD1 remarkably inhibits the malignant behaviors and causes morphological disorder of pseudopodia, autophagy inhibition and mitochondrial dyfunction in HCC cells. Further investigation shows that Cdc42, a Rho GTPase, plays a role in these processes. Overexpression of FGD1 significantly promotes the oncogenic properties of HCC cells. Collectively, these findings reveal that FGD1 exhibits oncogenic properties in HCC through regulating cell morphology, autophagy and mitochondrial function, suggesting that FGD1 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for HCC.

BackgroundThe incidence of symptomatic chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is increasing in Chinese aging population, but its clinical and demographic knowledge is still lacking. This study sought to outline the clinical and demographic data of CSDH patients from two medical centers in Tianjin and Chongqing to provide a better understanding for CSDH treatment in China.MethodsAge, sex, etiologies, conscious level on admission, treatment strategies, outcome at discharge, recurrence, and concomitant disease of enrolled patients were recorded. The data were further analyzed after the patients were sub-grouped into young/middle (less than 60 years old) and old (over than 60 years old) age groups.ResultsA total of 1281 CSDH patients were enrolled. Of these, 85.01% were male and 51.91% were aged between 60 and 80 years. 57.61% patients encountered head trauma before diagnosing CSDH. The top three clinical symptoms at admission were headache (58.55%), dyskinesia (36.92%), and dizziness (33.96%). Headache as well as dizziness often happened in young/middle age group, while dyskinesia often occurred in the old age group. The most common concomitant diseases were cardio-cerebrovascular system diseases (41.14%). The concomitant respiratory diseases in aged patients led to unfavorable outcomes (p = 0.049, OR:0.357). The prognosis of old age subgroup receiving conservative treatment was better than those who received burr-hole drainage treatment (p < 0.015, OR:4.091).ConclusionCSDH mostly occurs in aged and male population with a history a head trauma. The respiratory disease often results in unfavorable outcomes in aged patients. Conservative treatment might benefit some patients.

Background: Relevant serum tumor markers have been indicated to be associated with peritoneal dissemination (PD) of gastric cancer (GC). Fibrinogen has been shown to play an important role in the systemic inflammatory response (SIR) and in tumor progression. However, the clinical significance of the fibrinogen-to-lymphocyte ratio (FLR) in GC with PD has not been studied.Methods: The clinical data of 391 patients with GC were collected, including 86 cases of PD. Then, 1:3 matching was performed by propensity score matching (PSM), and the clinical data of the matched 344 patients were analyzed by univariate and multivariate conditional logistic regression. Classification tree analysis was used to obtain the decision rules and a random forest algorithm to extract the important risk factors of PD in GC. A nomogram model for risk assessment of PD in GC was established by using the rms package of R software.Results: Univariate analysis showed that the factors related to PD in GC were: carbohydrate antigen (CA) 125 (P < 0.0001), CA19-9 (P < 0.0001), CA72-4 (P < 0.0001), FLR (P < 0.0001), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (P < 0.0001), albumin-to- lymphocyte ratio (ALR) (P < 0.0001), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (P = 0.013), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (P = 0.031). Conditional logistic regression found that CA125 (OR: 1.046; P < 0.0001), CA19-9 (OR: 1.002; P < 0.0001), and FLR (OR: 1.266; P = 0.024) were independent risk factors for GC with PD. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the decision rules for detecting PD of GC were 89.5, 77.4, 94.0, 82.8, and 91.8%, respectively. According to the important variables identified by the classification tree and random forest algorithm, the risk assessment model of PD in GC was established. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the model were 91, 89.5, and 79.5%, respectively.Conclusion: CA125 > 17.3 U/ml, CA19-9 > 27.315 U/ml, and FLR > 2.555 were the risk factors for GC with PD. The decision rules and nomogram model constructed by CA125, CA19-9, CA72-4, and FLR can correctly predict the risk of PD in GC.

Background: Adequate water intake in pregnant women plays an important role in their health and in fetal growth and development. However, there is insufficient applicable data to guide and evaluate the water intake of pregnant women in China. Based on a nationwide sample of pregnant women, we mainly aimed to investigate the daily total water intake (TWI) and the contribution of different beverages and food sources to the TWI, to assess the percentage of participants who comply with the adequate intake (AI) value of water set by the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and to analyze the contribution of different water sources to the daily total energy intake (TEI). Methods: A multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit pregnant women from 11 provinces and two municipalities in China. A 4-day online diary with a food atlas was used to assess water and dietary intake. Finally, 653 pregnant women were included in the analysis. The Mann–Whitney U test and the independent-sample t-test were used to compare the differences between related variables in different age groups or different gestational periods, and partial correlation was used to explore the correlation between water and energy intake. Results: The median daily TWI of pregnant women was 2190 mL, of which water from beverages and foods accounted for 52.9% and 47.1%, respectively. Approximately 80.5% of the water from beverages was mainly from plain water (r = 0.973), while in the part of the water from foods, dishes (32.4%) were the main contributors (r = 0.663). Only 16.4% and 43.8% of the total population met the TWI recommendation set by the CNS and EFSA, respectively. Among these, the contribution of the water from beverages was higher than that of the water from food. For those whose TWI did not reach the recommended level, the contribution of the water from beverages was almost equal to that of food. The median daily TEI of pregnant women was 1589 kcal, of which beverages accounted for 9.7%. Milk and milk derivatives (71.3%) were the main contributors to energy from beverages, accounting for 71.3% (r = 0.444). Although sugar-sweetened drinks only accounted for 10.1% of the energy from beverages, they were highly correlated with energy from beverages (r = 0.836). Through grouping analysis, age and gestational period had no significant effect on the above main results. Conclusions: This was the beginning of a nationwide study on the TWI of pregnant women in China, and the results provide evidence of the need for interventions to improve water intake among pregnant women and the revision of reference values for AI of TWI in pregnant women in China.

Background: Several treatment strategies are used for management of resectable colorectal liver metastases. We performed a Bayesian network meta-analysis to compare preoperative, postoperative, or perioperative treatments, identifying the optimal approach.Methods: We searched reports of randomized controlled trials through the relevant databases. The primary outcome criterion was overall survival (OS). The secondary outcome measure was disease-free survival (DFS). We calculated the hazard ratio (HR) with the 95% credible interval (Crl) of the time-to-event data. Rank probabilities were evaluated by the probability of treatment rankings. Multiple treatment comparisons based on a Bayesian network integrated the efficacy of all included approaches.Results: Twenty-two eligible randomized controlled trials with 6,115 patients were included in the network meta-analysis. One treatment that resulted in a significant improvement in OS compared with surgery alone was hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) plus postoperative chemotherapy (CT) [HR = 0.74 with 95% Crl: (0.60, 0.94)]. With regard to the secondary outcome measure, three approaches that led to a significant improvement in DFS compared with surgery alone were HAI plus postoperative CT [HR = 1.44 with 95% Crl: (1.19, 1.75)], postoperative CT [HR = 1.14 with 95% Crl: (1.01, 1.29)], preoperative hepatic and regional arterial chemotherapy (PHRAC) plus preoperative CT [HR = 1.41 with 95% Crl: (1.03, 1.89)]. According to the results for the rank probabilities of the 11 treatments, the combination of HAI and bevacizumab plus postoperative CT showed the highest probability of benefitting OS, and PHRAC plus preoperative CT was most likely to benefit DFS.Conclusions: The combination of HAI and bevacizumab plus postoperative CT exhibited the greatest odds of being the most effective treatment for improving OS, and PHRAC plus preoperative CT exhibited the greatest odds of improving DFS. Further clinical studies are needed and justified.

There is a small but growing literature on large-scale statistical modeling of Chinese language texts. Ouyang analyzed a corpus of over 40,000 ancient documents downloaded from multiple sources. This was used to plot the temporal distributions of word frequencies and geographic distributions of authors. Huang and Yu modeled the SongCi poetry corpus, first converting it to tonally marked pinyin to conserve poetically important pronunciation information. Nichols and colleagues reported initial modeling of the Chinese Text Project corpus1 in a conference paper. (Further below, we describe differences between this corpus and the Handian.) With additional collaborators, this group has now conducted two studies that are currently unpublished but under review. In the first, they apply topic models to address scholarly questions about the relationships among important texts of Ancient Chinese philosophy. In the second, they use topic modeling to investigate the concepts of mind and body in ancient Chinese philosophy. Although we share similar scholarly objectives with these researchers, our approach in this paper is unique in that for the first time anywhere we bring the benefits of computational modeling of ancient Chinese texts to a robust public platform that is mirrored on both sides of the Pacific. Besides being just a useful portal to the texts, our approach foregrounds the interpretive issues surrounding topic models, and makes more sophisticated exploration and analysis of interpretive questions possible for experts and novices alike.
