ABSTRACTDiopside-anorthite glass-ceramics were prepared by direct sintering with extracted titanium slag (ETS), coal fly ash (CFA) and quartz sand (SA), the effect of sintering temperature (1120–1180°C) and the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (1.85–2.63) on the phase transitions, physical characteristics and microstructure was examined by adding CFA (28.5–40%) and SA (0–12.5%) to ETS (60%). The results revealed that the sintering temperature and the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 have a substantial impact on the sintering and processing properties of glass-ceramics. When the sintering temperature is lower than 1160°C, the sample sintering is incomplete, and when the sintering temperature is higher than 1170°C, the sample is prone to over-sintering and foaming. With the increase of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, anorthite content increases, while diopside content decreases. When SiO2/Al2O3 ratio is 2.13, 1160°C sintering 1 h, the better performance of diopside-anorthite-based glass-ceramics was prepared. The linear shrinkage, bulk density, water absorption and bending strength of the obtained glass-ceramics are 9.96%, 2.52 g/cm3, 0.943%, and 96.1 MPa, respectively. The results show that the prepared glass-ceramics are industrially applicable.

In this study, a glaze slurry was prepared with different contents of tricalcium phosphate. It was then applied to a fly ash microcrystalline ceramic billet and sintered at 1180 °C for 30 min to prepare the complex. The aim was to obtain a high value-added application of fly ash in order to reduce environmental pollution. The study systematically investigated the influence of the Ca3(PO4)2 content on the crystal phase evolution, physical-mechanical properties, and micro-morphology of the complex. The results showed that products sintered at 1180 °C with 8 wt% Ca3(PO4)2 demonstrated better performance, with a water absorption of 0.03% and a Vickers microhardness of 6.5 GPa. Additionally, the study observed a strong correlation between the Ca3(PO4)2 content and the opacity effect. A feasible opacity mechanism was also proposed to explain the variation of glaze colors and patterns with different contents of Ca3(PO4)2.

In this report, the case of a 65-year-old immunosuppressed female who presented with recurring redness and irritation in her right eye for 2 months is described. Ocular examination revealed conjunctival congestion, feather-like greyish-white corneal deep stromal infiltrate, white, floccular material sprawling from the anterior chamber angle and hypopyon. The in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) instantly confirmed fungal keratitis, and empirical antifungal therapy was thus administered. The patient exhibited therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty, however, due to the progression of infection and the lack of identified pathogens. The fungal isolate was identified as Corynespora cassiicola by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of the host cornea. The patient responded well to intensive conservative therapy and subsequent surgical therapy. To our knowledge, this case represents the first case of C. cassiicola infection from China, highlighting the emergence of a rare fungus that causes keratitis. Furthermore, mNGS has the capability to facilitate prompt identification and timely management of challenging ocular infections that are difficult to diagnose.

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high β _P has been significantly extended ( H _98y2 > 1.3, β _P ∼ 4.0, β _N ∼ 2.4 and n _e / n _GW ∼ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q _95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. Recent experimental results from the EAST superconducting tokamak with a full metal wall (without Li-coating) provide strong support for the ITER startup scheme with electron cyclotron wave (ECW) assistance. Detailed investigations were performed on the impact of different magnetic field geometries, including quadrupolar field configuration (QFC), wide null field configuration (NFC), and trapped particle configuration (TPC). All three configurations enabled the breakdown of neutral gas with ECW pre-ionization. However, in most discharges with QFC, the absence of closed flux surfaces after the breakdown was associated with unsuccessful plasma startups. Conversely, both NFC and TPC achieved successful plasma startups under normal conditions, with TPC demonstrating higher robustness against high impurity levels compared to NFC. Experiments found that the minimum ECW power required for a successful TPC startup is approximately 0.48 MW. Plasma startup failed if the prefill gas pressure exceeded optimal levels for a given ECW power ( $ \unicode{x2A7E} {\text{0}}{\text{.48}}$ MW), with the critical gas pressure linearly dependent on the ECW power. Additionally, higher ECW power was required with increased impurity levels. With ECW assistance, the toroidal electric field at $R = 1.85{\text{ m}}$ in EAST routine operations ( ${{ < }}0.15{\text{ V}}\,{{\text{m}}^{ - 1}}$ ) is significantly lower than ITER’s maximum value (0.3 V m ^−1 ), suggesting the possibility of reducing flux consumption and lowering demands on coils and power supplies for ITER.

The fly ash was used as raw material to prepare glass ceramic base body, on which a layer of glaze slurry was applied, then, the complex was successfully prepared by sintering at 1180 °C through single-sinter process. Influences of quartz sand content on crystal phase evolution, physical–mechanical properties, and surface morphology of products were studied systematically. Finally, an opaque glaze with 15 wt% quartz sand fitting on glass ceramic base body had been produced, exhibiting a unique main phase, mullite, which ensured a significant Vickers microhardness of 8.1 GPa, improving the mechanical properties of solid waste glass ceramic base body. It was also found that the water absorption of the product was .66%, which greatly enhanced the waterproof function of the base surface. The complex products developed in this study were expected to be used as building decoration materials and provided new ideas for effective reuse of other similar solid wastes.

The direct sintering process of coal fly ash for the preparation of glass-ceramics is the liquid-phase sintering process, from non-densification to densification. When the temperature exceeds the densification temperature point, the porosity of glass-ceramics on the contrary increases and the pore diameter increases. This provides a basis to prepare porous glass-ceramics by direct overfiring. Adding borax to coal fly ash can reduce the temperature of liquid phase formation, reduce the preparing temperature of porous glass-ceramics, achieve the purpose of energy saving. The effects of borax on the structure, properties and sintering kinetics of porous glass-ceramics prepared from coal fly ash by overfiring were investigated. It is found that the introduction of B-O bond can change the network structure of non-crystalline vitreous in coal fly ash, reduce the melting temperature, promote the formation of liquid phase, and thus increase the porosity of porous glass-ceramics. This paper provides a certain experimental basis for the preparation of porous glass-ceramics by direct overfiring of coal fly ash at low temperature without adding pore-forming agent, and provides a new possibility for the high-value resource utilization of coal fly ash.

In this study, the effect of citric acid on iron leaching from titanium gypsum (TiG) was systematically investigated. The conditions for the leaching of valuable metals were optimized while varying such parameters as the leaching time, citric acid mass fraction, leaching temperature, and the liquid–solid ratio. It was found that under the conditions of a citric acid mass fraction of 10%, at a 80 °C leaching temperature, a leaching duration of 80–90 min and a liquid–solid ratio of 8, the whiteness of titanium gypsum (TiG) increased from 8.1 to 36.5, and the leaching efficiencies of iron reached 84.37%. The kinetic analysis indicated that the leaching process of iron from TiG was controlled by the reaction product layer from 0–20 min, while the leaching process of iron from TiG was controlled by internal diffusion from 20–90 min. The apparent activation energy of the leaching reactions was 33.91 kJ/mol and 16.59 kJ/mol, respectively. High-value-added calcium oxalate and ferrous oxalate were prepared from the calcium and iron in the filtrate of the oxalic acid extraction. The leaching liquid could be recycled, which will provide a new way to utilize titanium gypsum.

The structure and activity of vermiculite can be maintained by expanding vermiculite (Vrm) with hydrogen peroxide. However, it is time-consuming. In past studies, little attention has been paid to the catalytic properties of manganese dioxide on hydrogen peroxide to improve the swelling efficiency of vermiculite. In this experiment, this catalytic effect was utilized to swell Vrm in a short time. The samples were then used to adsorb Cd from the solution. Through a series of characterization tests. The results showed that the exothermic rate was 1960.42–2089.164 J/min and the total exothermic heat was 39,208.4–41,783.28 J when expanding 10 gVrm, which could have a good expansion effect. The expansion was completed in about 40 min. Compared with Vrm, the adsorption of Cd is enhanced by about 30%. It is consistent with the proposed secondary kinetic adsorption model. This study provides a new perspective and theoretical guidance for improving the efficiency of Vrm stripping by hydrogen peroxide. A kind of expanded Vrm with better Cd adsorption efficiency was also prepared.

Ti-extraction blast furnace slag (EBFS) is a secondary slag produced by titanium extraction of titanium-bearing blast furnace slag (TBBFS), which is challenging to be used directly because of its residual carbon and chlorine. This study was performed to recover the residual carbon and remove chlorine from EBFS by froth flotation. The finely ground EBFS (FEBFS) contained graphitized carbon and khamrabaevite and had a 10.19% loss on ignition (LOI) and 5.52% Cl. The graphitized carbon was mainly recovered by flotation rather than khamrabaevite. Graphitized carbon appeared as flakes embedded in or stacked on the surface of the concentrate grains. The irregular-shaped particles were amorphous aluminosilicate glasses, whose presence adversely affected the quality and performance of the flotation concentrate. The Cl contents of the flotation concentrate and tailings obtained under the optimized flotation conditions were significantly reduced to 1.17% and 0.4%, respectively. The dechlorination efficiency reached 71.56%. Meanwhile, the LOI of flotation tailing was reduced to 1.32% and the carbon recovery was 84.79%. Froth flotation could recover residual carbon and remove chlorine from EBFS simultaneously, a novel way to deal with EBFS as a resource and harmless process.

To solve the environmental problems caused by the deposition of Ti-extraction blast furnace slag (EBFS) and to develop the functionality of the slag ceramics, photocatalytic EBFS ceramics were prepared via powder sintering at different temperatures. The phase composition dramatically changed in ceramics sintered at 1,000–1,150°C, but remained constant in samples treated at 1,150–1,200°C, just revealing the variations in the relative content of each phase. The photocatalytic performance of the samples was assessed through the catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Furthermore, it was shown to strongly depend on the relative Fe-bearing diopside content, achieving a maximum in EBFS-1180 ceramic. In this ceramic, the Fe-bearing diopside was found to degrade up to 77% of RhB under UV light irradiation at pH = 2, and its acid corrosion ratio after 24 h was only 0.03%, indicating that EBFS-1180 ceramic had the ability to degrade pollutants in an acidic environment.

Context: Paeoniflorin is reported to possess numerous pharmacological activities. Paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizin are always used together for the treatment of disease in China clinics; however, the drug–drug interaction between glycyrrhizin and paeoniflorin is still unknown. Objective: This study investigates the effects of glycyrrhizin on the pharmacokinetics of paeoniflorin in rats. Materials and methods: The pharmacokinetics of orally administered paeoniflorin (20 mg/kg) with or without glycyrrhizin pre-treatment (at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day for 7 days) were investigated in male Sprague–Dawley rats using LC-MS/MS. Additionally, Caco-2 cell transwell model and rat liver microsome incubation experiments were also conducted to investigate its potential mechanism. Results: The results showed that when the rats were pre-treated with glycyrrhizin, the Cmax of paeoniflorin decreased from 59.57 ± 10.24 to 45.36 ± 8.61 ng/mL, and AUC0-inf also decreased from 282.02 ± 35.06 to 202.29 ± 28.28 μg·h/L. To effectively prevent the accumulation of copper tailings from producing acid mine drainage (AMD) and maximize the comprehensive utilization of copper tailings, the process of oxidation roasting was adopted to release sulfur in the form of SO2 to achieve the purpose of sulfur recovery later. Based on the AMD risk assessment, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis, the influences of roasting temperature, residence time, and air flow in the roasting process were investigated. The thermal stability, reaction equilibrium, mineral transformation, and residual S content were characterized by TG-DSC, HSC chemical software 6.0, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and combustion neutralization, respectively. The optimum conditions for sulfur release in the roasting process were shown with a temperature of 1200°C, a residence time of 60 min, and an air flow of 0.8 L/min. Under these conditions, the sulfur release rate was 99.82%, and the residual S content was 0.05%. Subsequently, the process of sulfur release was proposed as four steps: oxidative decomposition of pyrrhotite, formation of ferric sulfate, decomposition of ferric sulfate, and formation of hematite. All of the findings could propose a theoretical and experimental reference for the recovery of the sulfur component from tailings rich in sulfide minerals.

Nano-TiO2 (T), TiO2/montmorillonite mixture (Mix), and TiO2/montmorillonite composite (Com) were prepared by using TiOSO4•2H2O as the precursor of TiO2 and montmorillonite as the matrix. The phase transition process of TiO2 and the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in T, Mix, and Com were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectrum (IR), scanning electron microscopy with energy spectrum (SEM-EDS), and other methods. The results show that, except for the fact that the heating temperature has a great influence on the phase transition and grain growth of TiO2, the introduction of montmorillonite has an obvious inhibition effect on the phase transition and grain growth of TiO2, and the inhibition effect of the Com is obviously stronger than Mix. In Com, Ti–O–Si chemical bond was formed between TiO2 and oxygen atoms with negative charge on the bottom of the structure layer of montmorillonite, which is the main reason for inhibition effect. However, in Mix, TiO2 only covers the surface of montmorillonite without breaking the degree of order of montmorillonite and forming no chemical bond with montmorillonite, so the inhibition effect is small. From degradation of MB, it was found that before the structure of montmorillonite was destroyed (400–600°C), the total degradation percentage in Mix (85.3–99.5%) was higher than T and Com. At high temperature (above 700°C), because of the inhibition effect, the total degradation percentage of MB in Com is much larger than T and Mix, even above 1,100°C, the total degradation percentage can still reach at 47%. Therefore, in industrial applications, Mix and Com can be selected to degradation MB, according to the actual application temperature range.

A series of graphite oxide samples were prepared using the modified Hummers method. Flake graphite was used as the raw material and the reaction temperature of the aqueous solution was changed (0 °C, 30 °C, 50 °C, 60 °C, 70 °C, 80 °C, and 100 °C). X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectral analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and contact angle tests were performed to characterize the structure, chemical bonding, type, and content of oxygen-containing functional groups of the graphite oxide samples. The results showed that the type and content of each oxygen-containing functional group could be controlled by changing the reaction temperature with the addition of water. As the temperature of the system increased, the degree of oxidation of the graphite oxide samples first increased and then decreased. Too high a temperature (100 °C) of the system led to the formation of epoxy groups by the decomposition of some hydroxyl groups in the samples, causing the reduction of oxygen-containing functional groups between the graphite layers, poor hydrophilic properties, and low moisture content. When the system temperature was 50 °C, the interlayer spacing of the graphite oxide samples was at its highest, the graphite was completely oxidized (C/O = 1.85), and the oxygen-containing functional groups were mainly composed of hydroxyl groups (accounting for approximately 28.88% of the total oxygen-containing functional groups). The high content of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups had good hydrophilic ability and showed the highest moisture content. The sample at 50 °C had better sensitivity to ammonia because of its high hydroxyl group and carboxyl group content, with the sample showing an excellent profile when the ammonia concentration was 20⁻60 ppm.

Sea urchins have long been used as research model organisms for developmental biology and evolutionary studies. Some of them are also important aquaculture species in East Asia. In this work, we report the construction of RAD-tag based high-density genetic maps by genotyping F1 interspecific hybrids derived from a crossing between a female sea urchin Strongylocentrotus nudus and a male Strongylocentrotus intermedius. With polymorphisms present in these two wild individuals, we constructed a female meiotic map containing 3,080 markers for S. nudus, and a male meiotic map for S. intermedius which contains 1,577 markers. Using the linkage maps, we were able to anchor a total of 1,591 scaffolds (495.9 Mb) accounting for 60.8% of the genome assembly of Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. A genome-wide scan resulted in the identification of one putative QTL for body size which spanned from 25.3 cM to 30.3 cM. This study showed the efficiency of RAD-Seq based high-density genetic map construction using F1 progenies for species with no prior genomic information. The genetic maps are essential for QTL mapping and are useful as framework to order and orientate contiguous scaffolds from sea urchin genome assembly. The integration of the genetic map with genome assembly would provide an unprecedented opportunity to conduct QTL analysis, comparative genomics, and population genetics studies.

Using p-phenylene diamine (PPD) as a modifier and nitrogen resource, nitrogen-doping reduced graphene oxide was prepared by one-step refluxing method. The influence of PPD-GO (graphene oxide) mass ratio X on surface functional groups, layer structure, and electroconductivity of nitrogen-doping reduced grapheme oxide (NRGO-X) was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption spectrum, and electrical measurement. The results showed that GO can be simultaneously reduced and nitrogen-doped by PPD. When PPD-GO mass ratio X ≤ 6, there existed three types of N configurations in NRGO-X, including pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, and graphitic N. However, when X > 6, the pyridinic N disappeared in a six-membered ring. Further, the reduction process of NRGO as well as the nitrogen doping level and type can be regulated by changing the mass ratio X. With the increase of X, the d-spacing of NRGO-X layers increased first and then decreased, while the electrical conductivity increased gradually.

The fish gill, as one of the mucosal barriers, plays an important role in mucosal immune response. The fish swimbladder functions for regulating buoyancy. The fish swimbladder has long been postulated as a homologous organ of the tetrapod lung, but the molecular evidence is scarce. In order to provide new information that is complementary to gill immune genes, initiate new research directions concerning the genetic basis of the gill immune response and understand the molecular function of swimbladder as well as its relationship with lungs, transcriptome analysis of the fugu Takifugu rubripes gill and swimbladder was carried out by RNA-Seq. Approximately 55,061,524 and 44,736,850 raw sequence reads from gill and swimbladder were generated, respectively. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway analysis revealed diverse biological functions and processes. Transcriptome comparison between gill and swimbladder resulted in 3,790 differentially expressed genes, of which 1,520 were up-regulated in the swimbladder while 2,270 were down-regulated. In addition, 406 up regulated isoforms and 296 down regulated isoforms were observed in swimbladder in comparison to gill. By the gene enrichment analysis, the three immune-related pathways and 32 immune-related genes in gill were identified. In swimbladder, five pathways including 43 swimbladder-enriched genes were identified. This work should set the foundation for studying immune-related genes for the mucosal immunity and provide genomic resources to study the relatedness of the fish swimbladder and mammalian lung.

The non-metallic catalyst graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted a significant amount of attention due to its excellent photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 has been further enhanced by the incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) as a composite catalyst. However, the enrichment and recovery of these two-dimensional composites after photocatalysis is still a difficult challenge. In this work, a visible light responsive graphene oxide/graphitic carbon nitride coated sponge three-dimensional composite (PU-GO/g-C3N4) was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly using polyurethane sponge (PU) as a skeleton and g-C3N4 as a photocatalyst. The degradation rate of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light was used as an index to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of PU-GO/g-C3N4. The results demonstrate that during the photocatalytic degradation of RhB by PU-GO/g-C3N4, g-C3N4 is the main photocatalyst, while the holes and the superoxide radicals generated by electron excitation are the main agents. As a bridge connecting PU and g-C3N4, GO improves the agglomeration phenomenon of g-C3N4 on PU. Meanwhile, GO has excellent carrier mobility and inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the presence of GO enhances the absorption of light and dyes. Overall, the addition of GO effectively enhances the photocatalytic performance of PU-GO/g-C3N4 due to it enhances dye absorption, improves light energy utilization rate, and expedites transfer of photogenerated electrons. After 5 cycles, PU-GO/g-C3N4 still exhibits an RhB degradation rate of 92.06%, demonstrating good stability and recycling performance. Physical and/or chemical changes such as refinement, component dissolution, exchange/adsorption, structural evolution and recombination of phyllosilicate minerals occur continuously in a naturally weakly acidic water environment. To compare the differential dissolution of cations that occupy various sites in vermiculite, trioctahedral vermiculite was dissolved in various concentrations of oxalate for 24 h and in 0.2 M oxalate for various durations. The concentration of ions in the leaching solution and the phase, structure and morphology of the original samples and acid-leached samples were analysed. Structural analysis showed that the 001 reflections of vermiculite gradually shifted to a higher angle and eventually disappeared after the dissolution of interlayer cations caused by acid leaching. The amount and rate of dissolution of each cation in the vermiculite showed that the octahedral cation Mg2+ is more soluble than Fe2+ and Fe3+. The dissolution rates of Al3+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were greatest in the first 4 h and then decreased gradually. Amorphous silicon dioxide and calcium oxalate were formed during acid leaching, and calcium oxalate was formed in the first 4 h. After leaching with oxalate for various periods, the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of the samples first increased and then decreased. Micromorphology analysis showed that the acid erosion process started from the edges. The results of this work contribute to our understanding of many natural geochemical processes, and they will be useful for several applications such as soil improvement, ecological restoration and environmental protection.
