Abstract A method based on Gabor spectral mode transmissibility functions (GSMTFs) is proposed to detect local damage in a cantilevered structure under nonstationary ambient excitations. Gabor transformation and singular value decomposition are used to reduce the influences of other vibration modes on Gabor spectral mode transmissibility functions and process nonstationary structural responses, respectively. A new state characteristic based on the fundamental structure frequency is formulated on the basis of the GSMTFs, eventually leading to the development of a new damage indicator. The probability density functions of the damage indicator for healthy and damaged states can be estimated from the measured data, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve derived from these probability distributions and the corresponding area under the ROC curve (AUC) are used to determine the damage location. A six-degree-of-freedom system and a typical transmission tower are numerically studied, and the results show that the proposed method can estimate the structural damage location under nonstationary random loads. The proposed method is further validated with a planar frame in the laboratory, which exhibits multiple damage elements via random force hammer excitations. The results show that the AUC values computed for certain parts of the structure containing the damaged elements are greater than those for other parts of the structure, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Moreover, the proposed method is compared with the dot product difference (DPD) index, and the results from the laboratory planar frame demonstrate that the proposed method can better identify damage.

Abstract Circular utilization of distillery byproducts is crucial, and pyrolysis has emerged as a viable technology for converting them into fuels and high-value chemicals. This review investigates the thermochemical reactions of byproducts generated during the grain fermentation process. We begin by discussing the physicochemical properties of these byproducts as they relate to their potential conversion into fuels. Subsequently, we explore various thermochemical processes for biomass-to-energy conversion, including the influence of reaction conditions and catalysts. The intricate interactions between cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and protein during pyrolysis are then examined. These interactions, particularly the Maillard reaction between proteins and carbohydrates and vapor–solid interactions, significantly impact the reaction pathways and ultimately the yield and quality of bio-oil, a key product of the pyrolysis process. Understanding these interactions, as evidenced by studies demonstrating the influence of levoglucosan, furfural, and hydroxyacetic acid on product yields, is essential for optimizing pyrolysis processes of distillery byproducts and maximizing the efficiency of biomass energy conversion. By elucidating the theoretical foundation and scientific basis for optimizing the energy conversion of distillery byproducts, this review aims to contribute to the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices within the brewing industry.

Invasive tumors are difficult to be completely resected in clinical surgery due to the lack of clear resection margins, which greatly increases the risk of postoperative recurrence. However, chemotherapy and radiotherapy as the traditional means of postoperative adjuvant therapy, are limited in postoperative applications, such as multi-drug resistance and low sensitivity, etc. Therefore, an engineered magnesium alloy rod is designed as a postoperative implant to completely remove postoperative residual tumor tissue and inhibit tumor recurrence by gas and mild magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MMHT). As a reactive metal, magnesium alloy responds to the acidic tumor microenvironment by continuously generating hydrogen. The in-situ generation of hydrogen not only protects the surrounding normal tissue, but also enables the magnesium alloy to achieve MMHT under low-intensity alternating magnetic field (AMF). Furthermore, the numerous reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by heat stress will combine with nitric oxide (NO) generated in situ, to produce more toxic reactive nitrogen species (RNS) storm. In summary, engineered magnesium alloy can completely remove residual tumor tissue and inhibit tumor recurrence by MMHT and RNS storm under low-intensity AMF, and the biodegradability of magnesium alloy makes great potential for clinical application.

Biofoam products have attracted considerable attention lately because there is a growing demand for green/sustainable products. To this end, various biobased foams have either been developed or are currently in development, e.g., bio-based polyurethanes (PUs), polylactic acid (PLA), starch, and polyhydroxyalkanotates (PHAs). Indeed, significant progress has been made; however, challenges still persist, for example, biobased foam products have poor processability, inferior compatibility, thermal and strength properties. In this review, we focus on five biofoam products: namely bio-based PUs, PLA, starch, PHAs, and cellulose biofoam products, along with their properties and performance, as well as their manufacturing processes. Further efforts are still needed to unlock the full potential of these bio-based products and meet the goal of complementing and gradually replacing some of their fossil-based counterparts. Finally, the challenges, as well as arising opportunities of future research directions are discussed.

With the rapid development of biotechnology, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have shown promising potential for cancer treatment and may become novel therapeutic targets. This study aimed to explore the roles of lncRNAs in retinoblastoma (RB). It involves analysing differentially expressed lncRNAs in RB and normal tissues from the GSE111168 and GSE125903 datasets, further validating them in RB cells. Our findings determined that lncRNA MIMT1 was upregulated in RB cell lines and tissues. In WERI-Rb1 and Y79 cells, silencing MIMT1 significantly inhibited cell proliferation, whereas MIMT1 overexpression enhanced cell proliferation. Furthermore, in vivo xenograft experiments demonstrated that MIMT1 knockdown suppressed tumour volume and weight. Subsequent mechanistic investigations showed that MIMT1 upregulates fibroblast expression of FGF2 by binding to miR-153-5p, ultimately promoting RB cell proliferation. This suggest that MIMT1 functions as an oncogene in RB and potentially serves as a molecular marker for diagnostic and prognostic assessments. Thus, the MIMT1/miR-153-5p/FGF2 pathway is a promising therapeutic target for RB treatment.

Aiming at the technical problem of abnormal gas outflow caused by collapsed holes in the process of directional drilling and sleeve milling in broken-soft coal seams, a gas prevention technology was proposed for directional drilling and sleeve-milling salvage in broken-soft coal seams. On the basis of the existing casing milling salvage technology, the gas drainage pipeline system in the casing milling salvaging drilling tool is optimized, and a large amount of gas accumulated in the salvaging drilling tool during the casing milling salvage process is drained and relieved. The salvage orifice airtight gas pumping system and the sleeve milling salvage rod anti-gas device can realize negative pressure extraction, airtight slag discharge and sealing rod addition in the whole process of sleeve milling salvage. The technology was used to successfully deal with a directional drilling stuck accident of crushed soft coal seam with hole depth of 362 m. In the treatment of the accident, the gas gathered in the fishing drill was extracted and pressure relieved through the gas extraction pipeline system in the fishing drill, and the gas gushing out of the hole and the end of the fishing drill pipe was realized through the closed gas extraction system in the hole and the anti-gas device in the rod. There was no over-limit gas accident in the whole salvage process.

Relying on the low latency, high reliability, and large bandwidth of 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT) can more efficiently promote information interaction and data utilization across remote locations. However, publicly accessible IoT environments involve risks of data and privacy leakage, which threatens the security and feasibility of the cloud-assisted IoT system. Although attribute-based encryption technology provides a fine-grained and secure data sharing solution, it is still challenging to employ dynamic management of multiple groups when device nodes operate cooperatively in dynamic groups. Thus, we propose a dynamic multi-group-supporting policy-hidden secure data sharing scheme in 5G-enabled IoT. Specifically, we exploit a group key management scheme based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem to achieve efficient dynamic group management in IoT and implement concealment of data owners’ access policies to enhance privacy preservation. Moreover, an edge computing layer has been introduced in our 5G-enabled IoT system to entrust decryption to edge servers and cloud servers, thereby mitigating the calculation burden of data users and assisting to fortify resilience against potential collusion attacks. To improve the availability of our system, mechanisms for validating the correctness of the final ciphertext were also incorporated. We further proved the security of the proposed scheme and conducted experimental simulations, which affirm its efficiency and practicability.

Cardiac development requires precise gene expression programs at each developmental stage guided by multiple signaling pathways and transcription factors (TFs). MESP1 is transiently expressed in mesoderm, and is essential for subsequent cardiac development, while the precise mechanism regulating its own transcription and mesoderm cell fate is not fully understood. Therefore, we developed a high content screen assay to identify regulators of MESP1 expression in mesodermal cells differentiated from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). The screen identified CYT387, a JAK1/JAK2 kinase inhibitor, as a potent activator of MESP1 expression, which was also found to promote cardiomyocyte differentiation in vitro. Mechanistic studies found that JAK inhibition promotes MESP1 expression by reducing cytoplasmic calcium concentration and subsequently activating canonical WNT signaling. Our study identified a role of JAK signaling in early mesodermal cells, and sheds light on the connection between the JAK-STAT pathway and transcriptional regulation of MESP1, which expands our understanding of mesoderm and cardiac development.

Abstract Three‐way catalysts are widely used to control criterion pollutant emissions from the increasing gasoline engines. With the stringent requirements of automotive pollutant emission standards in various countries, Rh has become an irreplaceable component of three‐way catalysts due to its superior NOx elimination, high N2 selectivity, and simultaneous elimination of CO and hydrocarbons. In this review, we systematically review the recent development of Rh‐based three‐way catalysts in terms of potential supports and effective active center construction strategies. We further summarize the key role of Rh metal in the three‐way catalytic mechanism and reaction kinetics. Finally, we conclude the current challenges and future opportunities facing Rh‐based catalysts. It is believed that based on the deep understanding of Rh‐based three‐way catalysts, the design of Rh‐based catalysts with good low‐temperature catalytic performance and low cost is expected to be realized in the future.

Abstract Cell mechanotransduction signals are important targets for physical therapy. However, current physiotherapy heavily relies on ultrasound, which is generated by high‐power equipment or amplified by auxiliary drugs, potentially causing undesired side effects. To address current limitations, a robotic actuation‐mediated therapy is developed that utilizes gentle mechanical loads to activate mechanosensitive ion channels. The resulting calcium influx precisely regulated the expression of recombinant tumor suppressor protein and death‐associated protein kinase, leading to programmed apoptosis of cancer cell line through caspase‐dependent pathway. In stark contrast to traditional gene therapy, the complete elimination of early‐ and middle‐stage tumors (volume ≤ 100 mm3) and significant growth inhibition of late‐stage tumor (500 mm3) are realized in tumor‐bearing mice by transfecting mechanogenetic circuits and treating daily with quantitative robotic actuation in a form of 5 min treatment over the course of 14 days. Thus, this massage‐derived therapy represents a quantitative strategy for cancer treatment.

IntroductionCrohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disease. Approximately 50% of patients with CD progressed from inflammation to fibrosis. Currently, there are no effective drugs for treating intestinal fibrosis. Biologic therapies for CD such as ustekinumab have benefited patients; however, up to 30% of patients with CD have no response to initial treatment, and the effect of ustekinumab on intestinal fibrosis is still uncertain. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the predictive factors of ustekinumab treatment response and the effect of ustekinumab on intestinal fibrosis.Materials and methodsPublic datasets—GSE207465 (blood samples) and GSE112366 and GSE207022 (intestinal samples)—were downloaded and analyzed individually (unmerged) based on the treatment response. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by the “limma” R package and changes in immune cell infiltration were determined by the “CIBERSORT” R package in both blood and intestinal samples at week 0 (before treatment). To find predictive factors of ustekinumab treatment response, the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) R package was used to identify hub genes in GSE112366. Hub genes were then verified in GSE207022, and a prediction model was built by random forest algorithm. Furthermore, fibrosis-related gene changes were analyzed in ileal samples before and after treatment with ustekinumab.Results(1) Our analysis found that MUC1, DUOX2, LCN2, and PDZK1IP1 were hub genes in GSE112366. GSE207022 revealed that MUC1 (AUC:0.761), LCN2 (AUC:0.79), and PDZK1IP1 (AUC:0.731) were also lower in the response group. Moreover, the random forest model was shown to have strong predictive capabilities in identifying responders (AUC = 0.875). To explore the relationship between intestinal tissue and blood, we found that ITGA4 had lower expression in the intestinal and blood samples of responders. The expression of IL18R1 is also lower in responders’ intestines. IL18, the ligand of IL18R1, was also found to have lower expression in the blood samples from responders vs. non-responders. (2) GSE112366 revealed a significant decrease in fibrosis-related module genes (COL4A1, TUBB6, IFITM2, SERPING1, DRAM1, NAMPT, MMP1, ZEB2, ICAM1, PFKFB3, and ACTA2) and fibrosis-related pathways (ECM–receptor interaction and PI3K-AKT pathways) after ustekinumab treatment.ConclusionMUC1, LCN2, and PDZK1IP1 were identified as hub genes in intestinal samples, with lower expression indicating a positive prediction of ustekinumab treatment response. Moreover, ITGA4 and IL18/IL18R1 may be involved in the treatment response in blood and intestinal samples. Finally, ustekinumab treatment was shown to significantly alter fibrotic genes and pathways.

Mercury (Hg), as a global pollutant, is persistent, migratory, insidious, highly biotoxic and highly enriched, and is widely distributed in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. Wetland ecosystems, as active mercury reservoirs, have become the most important sources and sinks of heavy metal mercury. Distinguished from natural wetlands, artificial wetlands located in urban sections of rivers face problems such as diverse urban pollution sources and complex spatial and temporal changes. Therefore, in this study, five intermittently distributed artificial wetlands were selected from the upstream to the downstream of the Changchun section of the Yitong River, a tributary of the Songhua River basin in the old industrial base of Northeast China. The mercury levels in the water bodies, sediments and plants of the artificial wetlands were collected and tested in four quarters from April 2023 to analyse the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of total mercury. The results showed that the mercury levels in the water bodies, sediments and plants of the five wetlands showed a fluctuating trend with the river flow direction and had certain spatial and temporal distribution characteristics. This phenomenon was attributed to the sinking of external mercury pollution sources. In general, the wetland ecosystems showed a decreasing trend in the total Hg output of the downstream watershed. This may be due to the retention of particulate matter by aquatic plants in artificial wetlands to regular salvage of dead aquatic plants. At the same time urbanization and industrialization affect mercury levels in aquatic environments, so the risk of residential exposure needs to be looked at.

Right aortic arch with isolation of left brachiocephalic artery is a rare congenital aortic arch anomaly. Herein, we reported a case of this rare anomaly with ventricular septal defect in a 9-month-old infant. We successfully reconstructed the islolated left brachiocephalic artery and repaired the ventricular septal defect in one stage.

Adhesives have attracted a great deal of attention as an advanced modality in biomedical engineering because of their unique wound management behavior. However, it is a grand challenge for current adhesive systems to achieve robust adhesion due to their tenuous interfacial bonding strength. Moreover, the absence of dynamic adaptability in conventional chemical adhesives restricts neoblasts around the wound from migrating to the site, resulting in an inferior tissue-regeneration effect. Herein, an extracellular matrix-derived biocomposite adhesive with robust adhesion and a real-time skin healing effect is well-engineered. Liquid–liquid phase separation is well-harnessed to drive the assembly of the biocomposite adhesive, with the active involvement of supramolecular interactions between chimeric protein and natural DNA, leading to a robustly reinforced adhesion performance. The bioadhesive exhibits outstanding adhesion and sealing behaviors, with a sheared adhesion strength of approximately 18 MPa, outperforming its reported counterparts. Moreover, the engineered bioderived components endow this adhesive material with biocompatibility and exceptional biological functions including the promotion of cell proliferation and migration, such that the use of this material eventually yields real-time in situ skin regeneration. This work opens up novel avenues for functionalized bioadhesive engineering and biomedical translations.

Abstract Background The aberrant formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) has been implicated in ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic recurrent intestinal inflammation. Cyclosporine A (CsA) is now applied as rescue therapy for acute severe UC. In addition, it has been certained that CsA inhibits the formation of NETs in vitro and the mechanism of which was still vague. The study aimed to explore the mechanism CsA inhibits the NETs formation of colitis in vivo and in vitro. Methods NETs enrichment in clinical samples was analyzed using databases from Gene Expression Omnibus and verified in our center. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis mice model was used to investigate the effect of CsA on NETs of colonic tissue expression. To clarify the mechanism, intracellular energy metabolites were examined by Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were examined by fluorescence intensity in neutrophils treated with CsA after LPS stimulation. The transcriptional level and activity of G6PD of neutrophils were also assessed using qRT-PCR and WST-8. RNA Sequencing was used to detect differentially expressed genes of neutrophils stimulated by LPS with or without CsA. The expression levels of related proteins were detected by western blot. Results NETs enrichment was especially elevated in moderate-to-severe UC patients compared to HC. NETs expression in the colon from DSS colitis was decreased after CsA treatment. Compared with neutrophils stimulated by LPS, NETs formation and cellular ROS levels were decreased in LPS + CsA group. Cellular ribulose 5-phosphate and NADPH/NADP + related to the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) were reduced in LPS + CsA group. In addition, CsA could decrease G6PD activity in neutrophils stimulated with LPS, and the results were further verified by inhibiting G6PD activity. At last, P53 protein was highly expressed in LPS + CsA group compared with the LPS group. Intracellular G6PD activity, ROS level and NETs formation, which were downregulated by CsA, could be reversed by a P53 inhibitor. Conclusion Our results indicated CsA could alleviate the severity of colitis by decreasing the formation of NETs in vivo. In vitro, CsA reduced ROS-dependent NETs release via downregulating PPP and cellular ROS levels by decreasing G6PD activity directly by activating the P53 protein.

In recent years, with the increasing consumption of resources around the world, motors in various industries are also urgently added to the ranks of energy saving and emission reduction. High-speed permanent magnet air compressor is widely used in various new energy vehicles. The study on its loss can provide reference for motor manufacturing industry. In this paper, the 27 kW, 90000 r/min high-speed permanent magnet air compressor is studied and analyzed. Taking 0.1 mm thick silicon steel sheet as an example, two different kinds of silicon steel sheet materials were compared and analyzed through the study of stator core loss. At the beginning of the design of the motor, the material was tested, and the good performance, low carbon and environmentally friendly material was used in the design and manufacture of the motor, which played a good role in the stable operation of energy saving and emission reduction and the motor. The high-speed motor uses frequency converter for power supply, and its characteristics of large harmonic content and high frequency lead to the increase of rotor eddy current loss. Therefore, the analytical calculation method of rotor eddy current loss is derived. This method establishes the physical model in polar coordinate system, and considers the sub domains such as air gap, sheath and permanent magnet. A prototype and an experimental platform were made to study the influence of harmonics on the motor. In this paper, the actual output current harmonics with IGBT and SIC as controllers are studied by comparative method. The actual output current is collected and applied as excitation to the 2D finite element model of motor for analysis and calculation. Finally, the influence of motor loss is analyzed comprehensively, which has reference value for each motor manufacturing enterprise.

Abstract PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression, yet their molecular functions in neurobiology are unclear. While investigating neurodegeneration mechanisms using human α-syn(A53T)Tg and AβTg;α-syn(A53T)Tg pan-neuronal overexpressing strains, we unexpectedly observed dysregulation of piRNAs. RNAi screening revealed that knock down of piRNA biogenesis genes improved thrashing behavior; further, a tofu-1 gene deletion ameliorated phenotypic deficits in α-syn(A53T)Tg and AβTg;α-syn(A53T)Tg transgenic strains. piRNA expression was extensively downregulated and H3K9me3 marks were decreased after tofu-1 deletion in α-syn(A53T)Tg and AβTg;α-syn(A53T)Tg strains. Dysregulated piRNAs targeted protein degradation genes suggesting that a decrease of piRNA expression leads to an increase of degradation ability in C. elegans. Finally, we interrogated piRNA expression in brain samples from PD patients. piRNAs were observed to be widely overexpressed at late motor stage. In this work, our results provide evidence that piRNAs are mediators in pathogenesis of Lewy body diseases and suggest a molecular mechanism for neurodegeneration in these and related disorders.

To improve the forecast accuracy of heavy precipitation, re-forecasts are conducted for the Henan 21.7 rainstorm. The Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research Model (ICAR) and the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) with a 1 km horizontal grid spacing are used for the re-forecasts. The results indicate that heavy precipitation forecasted by ICAR primarily accumulates on the windward slopes of the mountains. In contrast, some severe precipitation forecasted by WRF is beyond the mountains. The main difference between ICAR and WRF is that ICAR excludes the “impacts of physical processes on winds and the nonlinear interactions between the small resolvable-scale disturbances” (briefed as the “physical–dynamical interactions”). Thus, heavy precipitation beyond the mountains is attributed to the “physical–dynamical interactions”. Furthermore, severe precipitation on the windward slopes of the mountains typically aligns with the observations, whereas heavy rainfall beyond the mountains seldom matches the observations. Therefore, severe precipitation on the windward slopes of (beyond) the mountains is more (less) predictable. Based on these findings and theoretical thinking about the predictability of severe precipitation, a scheme of using the ICAR’s prediction to adjust the WRF’s prediction is proposed, thereby improving the forecast accuracy of heavy rainfall.

Paper relics, as carrieres of historical civilization’s records and inheritance, could be severely acidic and brittle over time. In this study, the multi-functional dispersion of nanometer magnesium oxide (MgO) carried by 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane-modified bacterial cellulose (KH550-BC) was applied in the impregnation process to repair aged paper, aiming at solving the key problems of anti-acid and strength recovery in the protection of ancient books. The KH550-BC/MgO treatment demonstrated enhanced functional efficacy in repairing aged paper, attributed to the homogeneous and stable distribution of MgO within the nanofibers of BC networks, with minimal impact on the paper’s wettability and color. Furthermore, the treatment facilitated the formation of adequate alkali reserves and hydrogen bonding, resulting in superior anti-aging properties in the treated paper during prolonged preservation. Even after 30 days of hygrothermal aging tests, the paper repaired by KH550-BC/MgO was still in a gently alkaline environment (pH was about 7.56), alongside a 32.18% elevation compared to the untreated paper regarding the tear index. The results of this work indicate that KH550-BC/MgO is an effective reinforcement material for improving the long-term restoration of ancient books.

The treatment of neurological disease, such as epilepsy is rather complicated. Emerging therapies such as surgery, gene therapy, stem cell transplantation, and neurostimulation have been developed to replace traditional drug therapy. However, great challenges such as the difficult localization of epileptic foci (EF), incomplete excision of lesioned nerves, high drug resistance, and severe side effects limit their clinical applications. As an alternative, bioinorganic materials have been emerged and show great potentials for epilepsy theranostics. Their unique physical properties, including fluorescence, magnetic resonance effect, and surface‐enhanced Raman scattering effect (SERS), give them the ability to image the localization of EF. In addition, the fluorescence and conductivity of bioinorganic materials could be further used for studying pathogenesis. Moreover, bioinorganic materials could serve as intelligent systems to deliver drugs and cooperative therapy for epilepsy. Herein, this review highlights the design and application of bioinorganic materials in the imaging, diagnosis, and therapy of epilepsy. Furthermore, light is shown on the potential bottlenecks and future perspectives of bioinorganic materials in epilepsy theranostics.

Abstract Revealing the energy transfer (ET) process from excitons to rare earth ions in halide perovskites has great guiding value for designing optoelectronic materials. Here, the multiple ET channels in multi‐exciton emissive Sb3+/Nd3+ co‐doped Cs2ZrCl6 are explored to comprehend the ET processes. Förster–Dexter ET theory reveals that the sensitizer concentration rather than the overlap integral of the spectra plays the leading function in the comparison of the ET efficiency among multiple ET channels from the host self‐trapped excitons (STEs) and dopant triplet STEs to Nd3+ ions. Besides, Sb3+/Nd3+ co‐doped Cs2ZrCl6 enables varied color delivery and has great potential as anti‐counterfeiting material. Under X‐ray irradiation, Sb3+/Nd3+ co‐doped Cs2ZrCl6 presents a high light yield of ≈13300 photons MeV−1 and promising X‐ray imaging ability. This work provides new insight for investigating the ET efficiency among multiple ET processes and presents great potentiality of multi‐exciton emissive perovskites in the fields of anti‐counterfeiting and X‐ray imaging.

Abstract Near‐infrared (NIR) light is well‐suited for the optical imaging and wireless phototherapy of malignant diseases because of its deep tissue penetration, low autofluorescence, weak tissue scattering, and non‐invasiveness. Rare earth nanoparticles (RENPs) are promising NIR‐responsive materials, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties. The 4f electron subshell of lanthanides, the main group of rare earth elements, has rich energy‐level structures. This facilitates broad‐spectrum light‐to‐light conversion and the conversion of light to other forms of energy, such as thermal and chemical energies. In addition, the abundant loadable and modifiable sites on the surface offer favorable conditions for the functional expansion of RENPs. In this review, the authors systematically discuss the main processes and mechanisms underlying the response of RENPs to NIR light and summarize recent advances in their applications in optical imaging, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, photoimmunotherapy, optogenetics, and light‐responsive drug release. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for the application of RENPs in optical imaging and wireless phototherapy under NIR activation are considered.

Abstract Though palbociclib, a cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor has been approved for treating breast cancer, two major clinical challenges remain: (i) Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) appears to be more resistant to palbociclib, and (ii) Palbociclib-induced senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) has a pro-tumorigenic function. Here we report that combining palbociclib with the STAT3 inhibitor nifuroxazide uncouples SASP production from senescence-associated cell cycle exit. Moreover, we identified nifuroxazide as a CDK2 inhibitor that synergistically promotes palbociclib-induced growth arrest and senescence in TNBC cells. In vitro, the combination of nifuroxazide with palbociclib further inhibited the TNBC cell proliferation and enhanced palbociclib-induced cell cycle arrest and senescence. The modulation of palbociclib-induced SASP by nifuroxazide was associated with the reduction of phosphorylated-STAT3. Nifuroxazide also blocks SASP-dependent cancer cell migration. Furthermore, thermal shift assay and molecular docking of nifuroxazide with STAT3 and CDK2 revealed that it binds to their active sites and acts as a potent dual inhibitor. In vivo, the combination of nifuroxazide with palbociclib suppressed 4T1 tumor growth and lung metastasis. Our data suggest that nifuroxazide enhances the anticancer effects of palbociclib in TNBC by uncoupling SASP production from senescence-associated cell cycle exit and inhibiting CDK2 to promote tumor senescence.

Abstract The manipulation of internal interactions at the molecular level within biological fibers is of particular importance but challenging, severely limiting their tunability in macroscopic performances and applications. It thus becomes imperative to explore new approaches to enhance biological fibers’ stability and environmental tolerance and to impart them with diverse functionalities, such as mechanical recoverability and stimulus-triggered responses. Herein, we develop a dynamic imine fiber chemistry (DIFC) approach to engineer molecular interactions to fabricate strong and tough protein fibers with recoverability and actuating behaviors. The resulting DIF fibers exhibit extraordinary mechanical performances, outperforming many recombinant silks and synthetic polymer fibers. Remarkably, impaired DIF fibers caused by fatigue or strong acid treatment are quickly recovered in water directed by the DIFC strategy. Reproducible mechanical performance is thus observed. The DIF fibers also exhibit exotic mechanical stability at extreme temperatures (e.g., −196 °C and 150 °C). When triggered by humidity, the DIFC endows the protein fibers with diverse actuation behaviors, such as self-folding, self-stretching, and self-contracting. Therefore, the established DIFC represents an alternative strategy to strengthen biological fibers and may pave the way for their high-tech applications.

Abstract Rational integration of native enzymes and nanoscaffold is an efficient means to access robust biocatalyst, yet remains on-going challenges due to the trade-off between fragile enzymes and harsh assembling conditions. Here, we report a supramolecular strategy enabling the in situ fusion of fragile enzymes into a robust porous crystal. A c2-symmetric pyrene tecton with four formic acid arms is utilized as the building block to engineer this hybrid biocatalyst. The decorated formic acid arms afford the pyrene tectons high dispersibility in minute amount of organic solvent, and permit the hydrogen-bonded linkage of discrete pyrene tectons to an extended supramolecular network around an enzyme in almost organic solvent-free aqueous solution. This hybrid biocatalyst is covered by long-range ordered pore channels, which can serve as the gating to sieve the catalytic substrate and thus enhance the biocatalytic selectivity. Given the structural integration, a supramolecular biocatalyst-based electrochemical immunosensor is developed, enabling the pg/mL detection of cancer biomarker.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) based on five or more elements have caught worldwide attention due to the excellent properties endowed by their unique structures. Compared with traditional alloys, HEAs have high strength, thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance. In recent years, the rapid development of HEAs shed light on the designing of new alloy systems. Their mixed multi-metallic sites give rise to a great potential for catalytic applications. In this review, we briefly introduce the phase structures of HEAs and their four core effects. In addition, the latest advances regarding HEAs are systematically summarized, with emphasis on the synthesis methods and catalytic applications, such as thermal-driven catalysis and electrocatalysis. To sum up, the current progress, challenges and future prospects of HEAs are discussed, hoping to provide a valuable route to understand this research field.

Polypeptides consisting of amino acid (AA) sequences are suitable for high-density information storage. However, the lack of suitable encoding systems, which accommodate the characteristics of polypeptide synthesis, storage and sequencing, impedes the application of polypeptides for large-scale digital data storage. To address this, two reliable and highly efficient encoding systems, i.e. RaptorQ-Arithmetic-Base64-Shuffle-RS (RABSR) and RaptorQ-Arithmetic-Huffman-Rotary-Shuffle-RS (RAHRSR) systems, are developed for polypeptide data storage. The two encoding systems realized the advantages of compressing data, correcting errors of AA chain loss, correcting errors within AA chains, eliminating homopolymers, and pseudo-randomized encrypting. The coding efficiency without arithmetic compression and error correction of audios, pictures and texts by the RABSR system was 3.20, 3.12 and 3.53 Bits/AA, respectively. While that using the RAHRSR system reached 4.89, 4.80 and 6.84 Bits/AA, respectively. When implemented with redundancy for error correction and arithmetic compression to reduce redundancy, the coding efficiency of audios, pictures and texts by the RABSR system was 4.43, 4.36 and 5.22 Bits/AA, respectively. This efficiency further increased to 7.24, 7.11 and 9.82 Bits/AA by the RAHRSR system, respectively. Therefore, the developed hexadecimal polypeptide-based systems may provide a new scenario for highly reliable and highly efficient data storage.

Abstract Few‐shot action recognition aims to learn a classification model with good generalisation ability when trained with only a few labelled videos. However, it is difficult to learn discriminative feature representations for videos in such a setting. The Elastic Temporal Alignment (ETA) for few‐shot action recognition is proposed. First, a convolutional neural network is employed to extract feature representations of video frames sparsely sampled from videos. In order to obtain the similarity of two videos, a temporal alignment estimation function is utilised to estimate the matching score between each pair of frames from the two videos through an elastic alignment mechanism. The analysis shows that when we judge whether two frames from respective videos are matched, multiple adjacent frames in the videos should be considered, so as to embody the temporal information. Thus, before feeding per‐frame feature vectors of videos into the temporal alignment estimation function, a temporal message passing function is leveraged to propagate the information of per‐frame features in the temporal domain. The method has been evaluated on four action recognition datasets, including Kinetics, Something‐Something V2, HMDB51, and UCF101. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of ETA and show its superiority over state‐of‐the‐art methods.

Sargassaceae, the most abundant family in Fucales, was recently formed through the merging of the two former families Sargassaceae and Cystoseiraceae. It is widely distributed in the world’s oceans, notably in tropical coastal regions, with the exception of the coasts of Antarctica and South America. Numerous bioactivities have been discovered through investigations of the chemical diversity of the Sargassaceae family. The secondary metabolites with unique structures found in this family have been classified as terpenoids, phlorotannins, and steroids, among others. These compounds have exhibited potent pharmacological activities. This review describes the new discovered compounds from Sargassaceae species and their associated bioactivities, citing 136 references covering from March 1975 to August 2023.

Background Olive (Olea europaea L.) oil accumulate more diacylglycerols (DAG) than mostly vegetable oils. Unsaturated fatty acids-enriched DAG consumption enhanced wellness in subjects. However, the mechanism of DAG accumulation is not yet fully understood. Methods In this study, gene network of DAG accumulation and fatty acid composition in the two olive mesocarps (“Chenggu 32” (CG) and “Koroneiki” (QJ)) were investigated by integrating lipidome and transcriptome techniques. Results A total of 1,408 lipid molecules were identified by lipidomic analysis in olive mesocarp, of which DAG (DAG36:3, DAG36:4 and DAG36:5) showed higher content, and triacylglycerols (TAG54:3, TAG54:4) exhibited opposite trend in CG. Specifically, DAG was rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially C18:2) at the sn-2 position, which was inconsistent with TAG at the same positions (Primarily C18:1). Transcriptomic analysis revealed that phospholipase C (NPC, EC 3.1.4.3) were up-regulated relative to QJ, whereas diacylglycerol kinase (ATP) (DGK, EC 2.7.1.107), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT, EC 2.3.1.20), and phospholipid: diacylglycerol acyltransferase (PDAT, EC 2.3.1.158) were down-regulated. Conclusion We speculated that the non-acyl coenzyme A pathway played a significant role in DAG biosynthesis. Additionally, fatty acyl-ACP thioesterase B (FATB, EC 3.1.2.14), stearoyl [acyl-carrier-protein] 9-desaturase (SAD, EC 1.14.19.2) and omega-6 fatty acid desaturase (FAD2, EC 1.14.19.6) were highly expressed in CG and may be involved in regulating fatty acid composition. Meanwhile, phospholipase A1 (LCAT, EC 3.1.1.32) involved in the acyl editing reaction facilitated PUFA linkage at the sn-2 position of DAG. Our findings provide novel insights to increase the DAG content, improve the fatty acid composition of olive oil, and identify candidate genes for the production of DAG-rich oils.

Abstract Isodon amethystoides (Lamiaceae) is a popular plant in folk medicine in the southern provinces of China. Our phytochemical investigation of the twigs and leaves of this plant led to the discovery of five new diterpenoids with isopimarane and 3,4-seco isopimarane scaffolds [isoamethinols A–E (1–5)], along with the known compound 3,4-seco isopimara-4(18),7,15-triene-3-oic acid methylester (6). The chemical structures of these compounds, including the absolute configurations of the new diterpenoids, were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. These compounds were evaluated for their biological activities against a panel of human cancer cell lines, gram-positive bacterial strains and HIV. Notably, the 3,4-seco-isopimarane isoamethinol D (4) showed toxicity to the cervical Hela cancer (Hela) cells with an IC50 value of 27.21 μM and the lung (A549) cancer cells with an IC50 value of 21.47 μM. Compound 4 also exhibited mild antimicrobial activity against the oral bacterial strain Streptococcus mutans. These findings suggested that the diterpenoids with a 3,4-seco-isopimarane diterpenoids isolated from I. amethystoides could provide a novel structure scaffold for the discovery of anticancer and antimicrobial compounds. Abstract Background and aims Cholinergic output, which could modulate innate immune responses through stimulation of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR), might be a target to minimize tissue damage in autoimmune disease. GTS-21, a selective α7nAChR agonist, has previously demonstrated to inhibit synovium inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we investigated the effect of GTS-21 on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model and its potential mechanism. Methods Male BABL/c mice (n = 32) were randomly divided into four groups: normal control group, DSS-induced colitis group, GTS-21 treatment with or without α7nAChR antagonist α-BGT treatment group. Disease activity index (DAI), histological activity index (HAI) and colonic macroscopic damage were evaluated. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)–dextran assay was applied to measure intestinal permeability. The expressions of tight junction (TJ) proteins and NF-κB associated proteins were detected by Western blot. Results GTS-21 could decrease DAI scores, HAI scores, intestinal permeability and reduce the intestinal bacterial translocation in DSS-induced colitis group, whereas α7nAChR antagonist α-BGT could impair this protective influence. The expressions of TJ proteins were increased with administration of GTS-21 both in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, GTS-21 also inhibited the NF-қB activation in intestinal epithelial cells and colitis model, while α-BGT reversed the inhibitory effect. Conclusion The α7nAChR agonist GTS-21 attenuated DSS-induced colitis through increasing expressions of TJ proteins in colon tissues and improved intestinal barrier function, which might be due to modulating NF-қB activation in intestinal epithelial cells.

Investigation Progresses of Rare Earth Complexes as Emitters or Sensitizers in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract Brain diseases, including tumors and neurodegenerative disorders, are among the most serious health problems. Non-invasively high-resolution imaging methods are required to gain anatomical structures and information of the brain. In addition, efficient diagnosis technology is also needed to treat brain disease. Rare-earth based materials possess unique optical properties, superior magnetism, and high X-ray absorption abilities, enabling high-resolution imaging of the brain through magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography imaging, and fluorescence imaging technologies. In addition, rare-earth based materials can be used to detect, treat, and regulate of brain diseases through fine modulation of their structures and functions. Importantly, rare-earth based materials coupled with biomolecules such as antibodies, peptides, and drugs can overcome the blood-brain barrier and be used for targeted treatment. Herein, this review highlights the rational design and application of rare-earth based materials in brain imaging, therapy, monitoring, and neuromodulation. Furthermore, the development prospect of rare-earth based materials is briefly introduced.

Abstract Purpose Mucosal healing (MH) has become the treatment goal of patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). This study aims to develop a noninvasive and reliable clinical tool for individual evaluation of mucosal healing in patients with Crohn’s disease. Methods A multicenter retrospective cohort was established. Clinical and serological variables were collected. Separate risk factors were incorporated into a binary logistic regression model. A primary model and a simple model were established, respectively. The model performance was evaluated with C-index, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy. Internal validation was performed in patients with small intestinal lesions. Results A total of 348 consecutive patients diagnosed with CD who underwent endoscopic examination and review after treatment from January 2010 to June 2021 were composed in the derivation cohort, and 112 patients with small intestinal lesions were included in the validation cohort. The following variables were independently associated with the MH and were subsequently included into the primary prediction model: PLR (platelet to lymphocyte ratio), CAR (C-reactive protein to albumin ratio), ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), HBI (Harvey-Bradshaw Index) score and infliximab treatment. The simple model only included factors of PLR, CAR and ESR. The primary model performed better than the simple one in C-index (87.5% vs. 83.0%, p = 0.004). There was no statistical significance between these two models in sensitivity (70.43% vs. 62.61%, p = 0.467), specificity (87.12% vs. 80.69%, p = 0.448), PPV (72.97% vs. 61.54%, p = 0.292), NPV (85.65% vs. 81.39%, p = 0.614), and accuracy (81.61% vs. 74.71%, p = 0.303). The primary model had good calibration and high levels of explained variation and discrimination in validation cohort. Conclusions This model can be used to predict MH in post-treatment patients with CD. It can also be used as an indication of endoscopic surveillance to evaluate mucosal healing in patients with CD after treatment.

Abstract Background Intestinal immune dysfunction is involved in the onset of Crohn’s disease (CD). Dendritic cells (DCs), antigen-presenting cells, play a key role in the maintenance of intestinal immune homeostasis. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-dependent transcription factor widely expressed in various immune cells, including DCs. Although AhR plays an important role in immune tolerance, its role in the DCs is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the activation of AhR can induce tolerogenic DCs (tolDCs) and the differentiation of regulatory T (Treg) cells, as well as ameliorate experimental colitis. Results AhR activation in the DCs resulted in a lower expression of surface markers such as CD80, CD83, CD86, and pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and higher anti-inflammatory production (IL-1β, IL-23, and IL-12) compared to the control DCs. The surface dendrites in DCs were significantly reduced following AhR activation by 6-formylindolo [3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ). Such DCs with FICZ-mediated activation of AhR, namely tolDCs, promoted Treg cell differentiation. Adoptive transfer of tolDCs to a TNBS-induced colitis mouse model significantly alleviated the severity of inflammation by improving the colon length and decreasing the disease activity index (DAI) and histopathological score. Moreover, the transferred tolDCs decreased the frequency of Th17 cells and increased the frequency of Treg cells in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) in murine colitis models. Conclusions Activation of AhR in the DCs could induce tolDCs, and the transplantation of tolDCs may help in relieving intestinal inflammation and maintaining the Th17/Treg differentiation balance. Thus, our data suggest that AhR may be a potential therapeutic target for CD.

China’s automotive industry has been dedicated to a series of carbon-reduction efforts and has strived for comprehensive green and low-carbon transformation in order to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. On the basis of automobiles’ whole life-cycle (WLC) carbon emission accounting, this paper calculates life-cycle carbon emissions per vehicle, proposes green and low-carbon development path for China’s automotive industry, quantifies and analyzes implicated carbon-reduction potential, and puts forth suggestions for high-quality green and low-carbon development of China’s automotive industry. The first is to establish a sound standard and data management system; the second is to promote research, development and application of low-carbon materials and low-carbon technologies; the third is to accelerate the pace of fostering a new consumption model in the automotive industry. The research results can further support national policy-making regarding carbon emissions, promote corporations’ research, development and application of low-carbon technologies, encourage green and low-carbon consumption, and lead the automotive industry to achieve WLC neutrality.

As emerging markets, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) participating countries have great development room for automobile industries. Yet the greater climate change pressure may hinder the development of the upstream and downstream industries chain of domestic automobile industries. Therefore, a sound carbon emission standard system should be established to guide carbon emission accounting, emissions management and so on. This study selects Singapore, Indonesia, Poland, South Africa, Pakistan as the typical research objects, and thereby analyzes the development status of carbon emissions standards in BRI participating countries’ automobile industries from the perspective of standard type, standard name, vehicle model range, target value, accounting boundaries, etc. In this paper, standard types are categorized based on management objects, such as fuel standard and carbon emissions standard. The accounting boundary, namely, the scope included in management, is divided into driving phase, life cycle phase and so on. In the meanwhile, based on comparative analysis method, China, United States (US) and the European Union (EU) are selected as the control group to study the existing problems of the carbon emission standards in BRI participating countries. The results show that the automobile industry of the BRI participating countries is still facing several problems to be solved, such as the lack of low-carbon technology, technical standard system of carbon emission, and the targeted carbon reduction policy framework, etc. Based on the above analysis results, policy recommendations have been proposed based on two categories of BRI participating countries to give scientific and reasonable advice for the construction of carbon emission standards for automobile industry.

Plant pathogens present in soil cause severe losses to plants every year. Among them, Ralstonia solanacearum, because of its destructive nature, is the world’s second most damaging bacterial phytopathogen. Over 310 species of plants belonging to 42 plant families are infected by this deadly pathogen. Around the world, the bacterial wilt (BW) disease causes yield losses that range from 20 to 100%. Control measures for managing this pathogen comprises several diverse approaches. Regardless of whether several control methods are developed to manage the BW disease, efficient management strategies with eco-friendly effects and the desired level of effective control is still awaited and there is need to developed effective management methods to eliminate this fetal disease in several crops under field conditions. An analysis of development in the management strategies will provide an effective way to search and develop control methods with desirable level of effectiveness. In this review, we discussed and analyzed the information reported on the development of various management strategies for the management of R. solanacearum along with the comprehensive presentation on action mechanism of these management strategies. We have also made an effort to summarize the challenges that make hurdle in the effective management of this deadly pathogen. The analysis of the information in this review article will assist in future implications of management strategies and help in developing effective control measures with more efficacy.

Abstract Depicting Secondary Eyewall Formation (SEF) and Eyewall Replacement Cycle (ERC) in a numerical model is important for tropical cyclone (TC) forecasting. However, there is no consensus about what resolutions are appropriate to describe SEF/ERC within a full‐physics mesoscale model. In this study, numerical experiments are conducted to examine the impact of the horizontal and vertical resolutions on SEF/ERC. The mesoscale model is configured through nesting to the horizontal grid spacings of 6, 4, 2, 1.33, 0.67‐km, and with 27‐ and 54‐levels on an f‐plane in a quiescent environment. In addition, there are more levels below 1.5‐km to better describe the TC boundary layer (TCBL). The simulations with 6 and 4‐km grid spacings show no obvious SEF/ERC regardless of the number of vertical levels. When the horizontal grid spacings decrease to 2‐km or smaller, the simulations manifest SEF/ERC. These results are supported by a few simulations with the ARW model using similar configurations. Furthermore, the spectra of kinetic energy and vertical velocity from various resolutions confirm that the grid spacings should be smaller than 4‐km to resolve SEF/ERC. The impact of doubling vertical levels on the SEF/ERC is not as significant as doubling the horizontal resolutions. Finally, we discuss the coupling between the balanced/unbalanced flows (above/in the TCBL), and their effect on SEF. It is proposed that the coupled balanced/unbalanced processes that generate the quasi‐steady cooling zone in the primary eyewall and two warming regions inside and beyond the cooling zone are essential for SEF.

Abstract Gliomas are common and refractory primary tumors closely associated with the fine structures of the brain. Photothermal therapy (PTT) has recently shown promise as an effective treatment for gliomas. However, nonspecific accumulation of photothermal agents may affect adjacent normal brain structures, and the inflammatory response induced during PTT may result in an increased risk of brain tumor recurrence or metastasis. Here, the design and fabrication of an intelligent nanomachine is reported based on Gd2O3@Ir/TMB‐RVG29 (G@IT‐R) hybrid nanomaterials. These nanomaterials enable tumor‐specific PTT and eliminate inflammation to protect normal brain tissue. The mechanism involves the rabies virus glycopeptide‐29 peptide (RVG29) passing through the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and targeting gliomas. In the tumor microenvironment, Ir nanozymes can act as logic control systems to trigger chromogenic reaction amplification of 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for tumor‐specific PTT, whereas in normal brain tissues, they scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by poor therapy and function as protective agents. Autophagy inhibition of Gd2O3 enables excellent photothermal therapeutic effects on orthotopic gliomas and protection against inflammation in normal cells. The results of this study may prove useful in developing highly efficient nanomedicines for glioma treatment.

For a 120kW hydrogen fuel cell system, a centrifugal air compressor with fixed power of 22kW fuel cell is designed. Firstly, the theoretical calculation is carried out for the aerodynamic characteristics of a ultra-high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor, an air compressor, and an aerodynamic foil bearing. Then, a prototype is trial-produced and a related test bench is built for test verification. Finally, both the simulation and test results indicate that the designed centrifugal air compressor meets the overall requirements of the hydrogen fuel cell system, and the relevant conclusions provide both theoretical and experimental references for the subsequent series development and design of the centrifugal air compressor.

Two undescribed ent-kaurene diterpenes, named guidongnins I (1) and J (2), were isolated from the medicinal plant Isodon rubescens. Compound 1 was determined to contain an unprecedented 23 carbons in the skeleton by bearing an extra isopropyl group at C-17 out of the diterpenoid parent structure, and compound 2 was the first example of 6,7-seco-7,20-olide-ent-kaurenes with two fused-tetrahydrofuran rings formed between C-6 and C-19/C-20 through oxygen bridges. Their structures, including their absolute configurations, were determined using the analyses of the spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction data. Guidongnins I (1) and J (2) were assessed for their anti-cancer activities against the growth of various cancer cell lines, and 2 displayed cytotoxic potency against HepG2 at IC50 27.14 ± 3.43 μM.

Antarctica is of great importance in terms of global warming, the sustainability of resources, and the conservation of biodiversity. However, due to 99.66% of the continent being covered in ice and snow, geological research and geoscientific study in Antarctica face huge challenges. Geophysical surveys play a crucial role in enhancing comprehension of the fundamental structure of Antarctica. This study used bibliometric analysis to analyze citation data retrieved from the Web of Science for the period from 1982 to 2022 with geophysical research on Antarctica as the topic. According to the analysis results, the amount of Antarctic geophysical research has been steadily growing over the past four decades as related research countries/regions have become increasingly invested in issues pertaining to global warming and sustainability, and international cooperation is in sight. Moreover, based on keyword clustering and an analysis of highly cited papers, six popular research topics have been identified: Antarctic ice sheet instability and sea level change, Southern Ocean and Sea Ice, tectonic activity of the West Antarctic rift system, the paleocontinental rift and reorganization, magmatism and volcanism, and subglacial lakes and subglacial hydrology. This paper provides a detailed overview of these popular research topics and discusses the applications and advantages of the geophysical methods used in each field. Finally, based on keywords regarding abrupt changes, we identify and examine the thematic evolution of the nexus over three consecutive sub-periods (i.e., 1990–1995, 1996–2005, and 2006–2022). The relevance of using geophysics to support numerous and diverse scientific activities in Antarctica becomes very clear after analyzing this set of scientific publications, as is the importance of using multiple geophysical methods (satellite, airborne, surface, and borehole technology) to revolutionize the acquisition of new data in greater detail from inaccessible or hard-to-reach areas. Many of the advances that they have enabled be seen in the Antarctic terrestrial areas (detailed mapping of the geological structures of West and East Antarctica), ice, and snow (tracking glaciers and sea ice, along with the depth and features of ice sheets). These valuable results help identify potential future research opportunities in the field of Antarctic geophysical research and aid academic professionals in keeping up with recent advances.

Abstract Background The intestinal microbiota is thought to be involved in the occurrence of inflammatory bowel disease in remission with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-type symptoms, but the specific distinct profile of these bacteria remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the fecal microbiota profiling in patients with these diseases. Methods Fecal samples from 97 subjects, including Crohn’s disease patients in remission with IBS-type symptoms (CDR-IBS+) or without IBS-type symptoms (CDR-IBS−), ulcerative colitis patients in remission with IBS-type symptoms (UCR-IBS+) or without IBS-type symptoms (UCR-IBS−), IBS patients and healthy controls, were collected and applied 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) gene sequencing. The V4 hypervariable regions of 16S rDNA gene were amplified and sequenced by the Illumina MiSeq platform. The differences in the sample diversity index in groups were analyzed with R software.
