In the extreme polar marine environment, safety risks pose a significant threat to drilling vessels. By conducting a safety risk assessment, potential hazards can be predicted and identified, thereby significantly reducing the frequency of accidents and promoting the sustained stability of economic activities. This paper investigates a Bayesian-network-based risk assessment model for polar drilling operations. Grey relational analysis was employed to identify the main risk factors. The model is trained using 525 valid incident sample data and is combined with expert knowledge. The accuracy rate is above 88%. Additionally, corresponding decision-making recommendations are provided through sensitivity analysis. The three most sensitive elements to fire nodes are human error, other causes, and equipment damage, with sensitivity coefficients of 0.046, 0.042, and 0.022, respectively. In terms of deck/handrail collision nodes, the highly sensitive elements are related to lifting (totally more than 0.1). For the events that have already transpired, the probabilities of most related nodes are 0.73 and 0.74, both of which are above 0.5, thereby validating the accuracy of forward and backward reasoning. Risk assessments based on Bayesian networks can offer pertinent decision-making recommendations and preventive measures.

Purpose: To observe the clinical and imaging characteristics of radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 43 patients (69 eyes) who were diagnosed with RION at the Chinese PLA General Hospital from 2010 to 2021. Results: The latency from radiotherapy to onset of visual loss ranged from 1 to 132 (36.33 ​± ​30.48) months. Optic disc pallor and optic disc edema were found in 27.0% (10/37) and 8.1% (3/37) of the eyes, respectively, within 2 months. After treatment, the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was restored in 24.6% (17/69) of the eyes and the final BCVA improved in 13.0% (9/69) of the eyes. An 82.5% (33/40) of the eyes with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed enhancement of the affected optic nerve, mostly (69.7%) in the intracranial segment, and 36.4% (12/33) of the eyes with expansion and T2-high signals also showed enhancement of the affected optic nerve. The superior retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and the outer circle superior quadrant (OS) of the inner limiting membrane to retinal pigment epithelium (ILM-RPE) layer thinned significantly during the first month. The center of the ILM-RPE layer thickened significantly during the first two months and the inner circle temporal quadrant (IT) of the ILM-RPE layer thickened significantly from the third to sixth month. The RNFL thinned significantly after 6 months except for the temporal quadrant, and the average inner circle superior quadrant (IS) and outer circle of the ILM-RPE layer thinned significantly after 6 months. There was no significant difference between hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) therapy in improving BCVA recovery or final BCVA (P ​> ​0.05). Conclusions: The structural damage of the RNFL and ILM-RPE layer occurred during the first month, the RNFL showed progressive thinning during the follow-up period, while the ILM-RPE layer showed thinning during the first month, thickening from the third to sixth month, and thinning after 6 months. There was a discrete region of enhancement of the optic nerve, often with expansion and high-T2 signals on MRI. HBOT and high-dose IVMP therapy were hardly effective for treating RION in the non-acute stage.

With the continuous operation of a water transfer project, especially under the general trend of global climate change in recent years, extreme weather occurs frequently, and the project's operation process will be tested by natural disasters, structural damage, electromechanical equipment failure, water pollution and other risks. Therefore, the risk management of the water transfer project is of great significance to ensure the long-term operation of the project. As one of the four largest cross-century projects in China, the operation risk of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project has attracted great attention. In this paper, a system dynamic model (SDM) for simulating real-time risk is presented. Based on the linear and directional characteristics of water transfer project and the known risk level of single buildings, DYNAMO language is embedded to connect the risks of various points on the line, and a model for real-time monitoring the risk changes along the line is constructed. The what-if analysis performed by the SDM shows the importance of human intervention to the deterioration and spread of dangerous situations in the process of engineering damage. BackgroundC-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12) is a chemokine that performs many functions. Studies have shown that CXCL12 can aggravate inflammatory symptoms in the central nervous system (CNS). Evidence also indicates that CXCL12 can promote the repair of myelin sheaths in the CNS in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Here, we investigated the function of CXCL12 in CNS inflammation by upregulating CXCL12 in the spinal cord and subsequently inducing EAE.Materials and methodsCXCL12 upregulation in the spinal cords of Lewis rats was induced by the injection of adeno-associated virus 9 (AAV9)/eGFP-P2A-CXCL12 after intrathecal catheter implantation. Twenty-one days after AAV injection, EAE was induced and clinical score was collected; Immunofluorescence staining, WB and LFB-PAS staining were used to evaluate the effect of CXCL12 upregulation. In the in vitro study, oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) were harvested, cultured with CXCL12 and AMD3100, and subjected to immunofluorescence staining for functional assessment.ResultsCXCL12 was upregulated in the lumbar enlargement of the spinal cord by AAV injection. In each stage of EAE, upregulation of CXCL12 significantly alleviated clinical scores by inhibiting leukocyte infiltration and promoting remyelination. In contrast, the addition of AMD3100, which is a CXCR4 antagonist, inhibited the effect of CXCL12. In vitro, 10 ng/ml CXCL12 promoted the differentiation of OPCs into oligodendrocytes.ConclusionAAV-mediated upregulation of CXCL12 in the CNS can alleviate the clinical signs and symptoms of EAE and significantly decrease the infiltration of leukocytes in the peak stage of EAE. CXCL12 can promote the maturation and differentiation of OPCs into oligodendrocytes in vitro. These data indicate that CXCL12 effectively promotes remyelination in the spinal cord and decreases the signs and symptoms of EAE.

The stability of surrounding rock is an important concern in the investigation, design, and construction of mountain integrated pipe gallery. On the basis of the DK6+180 section of the Winter Olympics Integrated Pipe Gallery, the stability of surrounding rock was analyzed by using the deformation modulus of surrounding rock obtained by inversion. The results show that with the increase of reduction factor, the strength parameters of surrounding rock decrease gradually, the vault settlement and clearance convergence increase gradually, and the plastic zone range of surrounding rock increases linearly. When the reduction factor reaches 3.5, the plastic zone has penetrated to the surface. At this time, the vault settlement and clearance convergence of surrounding rock are infinite, indicating that the surrounding rock has reached the limit stable state. On the basis of the plastic zone distribution of surrounding rock and the calculation and analysis results of surrounding rock deformation, the stability safety factor of surrounding rock in this section is determined to be 3.5. The research results have reference value for the stability analysis of surrounding rock of similar mountain integrated pipe gallery.

The torsion spring of a carrier-based aircraft landing gear is a key component, which is normally manufactured out of AerMet100 ultra-high-strength steel. The takeoff and landing performance is greatly influenced by its bearing capacity and structural durability. To carry out the structure anti-fatigue design, it is necessary to investigate the influence of the spring structure features on its fatigue life, based on which the strain fatigue analysis and parameter optimization design of the torsion spring are executed. Through the finite element analysis conducted with ABAQUS, it was determined that there exists serious stress concentration in the relief groove. Based on the theory of strain fatigue, the fatigue life of the torsion spring was obtained, and the fracture position and lifecycle were consistent with the test results. A structure optimization platform based on a parametric method was established. Samples were selected through the DOE (design of experiment), and a surrogate model was established based on RBF (radial basis functions), followed by optimization using MIGA (multi-island genetic algorithms). With the parameter optimization of the relief groove, the structure was reconstituted and reanalyzed. From the simulation results, the peak strain was reduced by 30.7%, while the fatigue life was increased by 86.2% under the same loads and constraints. Moreover, laboratory tests were performed on the torsion spring after reconstruction, which showed that the fatigue life increases by 85.6% after optimization. The method presented in this paper can provide theoretical support and technical guidance for the application and structural optimization of ultra-high-strength steel structures.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the clinical spectra and outcomes in pregnancy-related optic neuritis (ON).MethodsWe analyzed the clinical subtype and prognosis of women with pregnancy-related ON in the neuro-ophthalmology department of the First Medical Center at the Chinese PLA General Hospital from January 2014 to December 2019.ResultsA total of 54 patients, including 21 (38.9%) with idiopathic ON (ION), 27 (50.0%) with aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-ON, and 6 (11.6%) with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-ON, who experienced 58 informative pregnancies and 67 episodes of pregnancy-related ON were assessed. Among the ON attacks, there were 11 (16.4%) during pregnancy and 56 (83.6%) within 1 year postpartum (PP1) or after abortion, including 33 (49.3%) in the first trimester. In total, 14 (25.9%) patients with ON onset before pregnancy had a higher relapse rate during PP1 than within 1 year before pregnancy (p = 0.021), and 24 (85.7%) eyes with ION and nine (100%) with MOG-ON had significantly better visual outcomes (p ≥ 0.5) than those with AQP4-ON (14, 35%) (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Two AQP4-ON patients had premature birth and low baby weight, respectively. There were no birth defects or stillbirths.ConclusionThe significantly increased relapse rate and numerous cases of ON after pregnancy suggest that delivery adversely affects the course of ON.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a central nervous system inflammatory demyelinating disease, the pathogenesis of which involves autoantibodies targeting the extracellular epitopes of aquaporin-4 on astrocytes. We neutralized the AQP4-IgG from NMOSD patient sera using synthesized AQP4 extracellular epitope peptides and found that the severe cytotoxicity produced by aquaporin-4 immunoglobin (AQP4-IgG) could be blocked by AQP4 extracellular mimotope peptides of Loop A and Loop C in astrocyte protection and animal models. ACT001, a natural compound derivative, has shown anti-tumor activity in various cancers. In our study, the central nervous system anti-inflammatory effect of ACT001 was investigated. The results demonstrated the superior astrocyte protection activity of ACT001 at 10 µM. Furthermore, ACT001 decreases the behavioral score in the mouse NMOSD model, which was not inferior to Methylprednisolone Sodium Succinate, the first-line therapy of NMOSD in clinical practice. In summary, our study showed that astrocytes are protected by specific peptides, or small molecular drugs, which is a new strategy for the treatment of NMOSD. It is possible for ACT001 to be a promising therapy for NMOSD.

To solve the problem of the high cost of transient temperature simulation in the whole construction process of an asphalt-concrete core wall, a novel adaptive degree of freedom condensation algorithm for simulating transient temperature is proposed. This method establishes the judgment criterion of degree of freedom condensation based on the error estimator of mesh and the artificial energy added by degree of freedom condensation. In this method, the transformation matrix between the master and slave degrees of freedom is constructed based on the shape function interpolation relationship between the initial coarse mesh and the multi-level refined mesh. In the transient calculation process, this method can automatically identify the positions where temperature distribution and value are stable and condense the considered slave degrees of freedom to master degrees of freedom through the transformation matrix at any time to reduce the unnecessary degrees of freedom. In this paper, three numerical examples show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the cost of matrix factorization and the solving the equation in the finite element method at the cost of small precision loss in the long-term transient temperature simulation.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), as a Gram-positive bacterium, can cause severe bacterial pneumonia, and result in high morbidity and mortality in infected people. Meanwhile, isolated drug-resistant S. pneumoniae is growing, which raises concerns about strategies for combatting S. pneumoniae infection. To disturb S. pneumoniae pathogenicity and its drug-resistance, developing novel anti-infective strategies or compounds is urgent. In this study, the anti-infective effect of shionone was explored. A minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay and growth curve determination were performed to evaluate the effect of the tetracyclic triterpenoid compound shionone against S. pneumoniae. Hemolysis tests, western blotting, oligomerization inhibition assays, and molecular docking were carried out to explore the anti-infective mechanism of shionone. Moreover, the protective effect of shionone was also confirmed in a mousepneumonia model. The results showed that the excellent hemolytic inhibitory activity of shionone was observed at less than 8 μg/mL. Meanwhile, shionone could disturb the oligomerization of pneumolysin (PLY) but did not interfere with PLY expression at less than 4 μg/mL. Molecular docking suggested that shionone targeted the ASP-59, ILE-60, THR-57, PHE-344, and ASN-346 amino acid sites to reduce S. pneumoniae pathogenicity. Furthermore, shionone alleviated lung histopathologic injury and decreased lung bacterial colonization in vivo. The above results showed that shionone could bind to the PLY active pocket under the concentrations of 8 μg/mL and neutralize PLY hemolysis activity to reduce S. pneumoniae pathogenicity in vitro and in vivo.

Sortase A (SrtA)-catalyzed anchorage of surface proteins in most Gram-positive bacteria is indispensable for their virulence, suggesting that this transpeptidase is a promising target for antivirulence therapy. Here, an oligopeptide, LPRDA, was identified as an effective inhibitor of SrtA via virtual screening based on the LPXTG substrate sequence, and it was found to inhibit SrtA activity in vitro and in vivo (IC50 = 10.61 μM) by competitively occupying the active site of SrtA. Further, the oligopeptide treatment had no anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity, but it provided protection against S. aureus-induced mastitis in a mouse model. These findings indicate that the oligopeptide could be used as an effective anti-infective agent for the treatment of infection caused by S. aureus or other Gram-positive bacteria via the targeting of SrtA.

Alpha-hemolysin (α-HL) is a self-assembling, channel-forming toxin produced by most Staphylococcus aureus strains as a 33.2-kDa soluble monomer. Upon binding to a susceptible cell membrane, the monomer self-assembles to form a 232.4-kDa heptamer that ultimately causes host cell lysis and death. Consequently, α-HL plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of S. aureus infections, such as pneumonia, mastitis, keratitis and arthritis. In this paper, experimental studies show that oroxylin A (ORO), a natural compound without anti-S. aureus activity, can inhibit the hemolytic activity of α-HL. Molecular dynamics simulations, free energy calculations, and mutagenesis assays were performed to understand the formation of the α-HL-ORO complex. This combined approach revealed that the catalytic mechanism of inhibition involves the direct binding of ORO to α-HL, which blocks the conformational transition of the critical "Loop" region of the α-HL protein thereby inhibiting its hemolytic activity. This mechanism was confirmed by experimental data obtained from a deoxycholate-induced oligomerization assay. It was also found that, in a co-culture system with S. aureus and human alveolar epithelial (A549) cells, ORO could protect against α-HL-mediated injury. These findings indicate that ORO hinders the lytic activity of α-HL through a novel mechanism, which should facilitate the design of new and more effective antibacterial agents against S. aureus.

BACKGROUND: α-toxin is one of the major virulence factors secreted by most Staphylococcus aureus strains, which played a central role in the pathogenesis of S. aureus pneumonia. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of capsaicin on the production of α-toxin by community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strain USA 300 and to further assess its performance in the treatment of CA-MRSA pneumonia in a mouse model. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The in vitro effects of capsaicin on α-toxin production by S. aureus USA 300 were determined using hemolysis, western blot, and real-time RT-PCR assays. The influence of capsaicin on the α-toxin-mediated injury of human alveolar epithelial cells was determined using viability and cytotoxicity assays. Mice were infected intranasally with S. aureus USA300; the in vivo protective effects of capsaicin against S. aureus pneumonia were assessed by monitoring the mortality, histopathological changes and cytokine levels. Low concentrations of capsaicin substantially decreased the production of α-toxin by S. aureus USA 300 without affecting the bacterial viability. The addition of capsaicin prevented α-toxin-mediated human alveolar cell (A549) injury in co-culture with S. aureus. Furthermore, the in vivo experiments indicated that capsaicin protected mice from CA-MRSA pneumonia caused by strain USA 300. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Capsaicin inhibits the production of α-toxin by CA-MRSA strain USA 300 in vitro and protects mice from CA-MRSA pneumonia in vivo. However, the results need further confirmation with other CA-MRSA lineages. This study supports the views of anti-virulence as a new antibacterial approach for chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenicity of staphylococcus aureus is dependent largely upon its ability to secrete a number of virulence factors, therefore, anti-virulence strategy to combat S. aureus-mediated infections is now gaining great interest. It is widely recognized that some plant essential oils could affect the production of staphylococcal exotoxins when used at subinhibitory concentrations. Perilla [Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton], a natural medicine found in eastern Asia, is primarily used as both a medicinal and culinary herb. Its essential oil (perilla oil) has been previously demonstrated to be active against S. aureus. However, there are no data on the influence of perilla oil on the production of S. aureus exotoxins. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of perilla oil against S. aureus strains. Hemolysis, tumour necrosis factor (TNF) release, Western blot, and real-time RT-PCR assays were performed to evaluate the effects of subinhibitory concentrations of perilla oil on exotoxins production in S. aureus. The data presented here show that perilla oil dose-dependently decreased the production of α-toxin, enterotoxins A and B (the major staphylococcal enterotoxins), and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) in both methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The production of α-toxin, SEA, SEB, and TSST-1 in S. aureus was decreased by perilla oil. These data suggest that perilla oil may be useful for the treatment of S. aureus infections when used in combination with β-lactam antibiotics, which can increase exotoxins production by S. aureus at subinhibitory concentrations. Furthermore, perilla oil could be rationally applied in food systems as a novel food preservative both to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and to repress the production of exotoxins, particularly staphylococcal enterotoxins.

Preferential adsorption occurs during interaction between humic substances (HS) and metal (hydr)oxides, however, the preferential adsorption and thermal stability mechanism remains poorly understood. Here we show that solution pH can modify the configuration of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA), and thereby altering their fractionation and thermal stability in relation to goethite. At pH 5–7, particles with a molar mass of 3.5–15 kDa were preferentially adsorbed for both fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA). These particles enriched in aromatic moieties and carboxylic groups (-COOH), which enhanced the stability of HS by facilitating the formation of inner-sphere complexes. Conversely, at pH levels exceeding 9.2, large particles (> 50 kDa) and those rich in aliphatic moieties were preferentially adsorbed for both HA and FA, attributed to the increased significance of hydrophobic interactions. However, this stabilization effect on HS was limited under these conditions. FA particles exhibit a lower degree of chemical heterogeneity compared to HA particles. For FA, the variations in aromatic structures (-COOH) and aliphatic moieties were coupled, following a consistent trend in preferential adsorption as pH changed. In contrast, HA demonstrated an opposite pH dependency, with aromatic (-COOH) and aliphatic moieties displaying divergent patterns of preferential adsorption. These innovative discoveries clarify the behavior of organic matter in various environmental conditions and its interactions with minerals surfaces, thereby establishing a critical theoretical foundation for understanding the sequestration of soil organic carbon, emphasizing the dual roles of aromatic and aliphatic moieties in the preferential adsorption and stability of humic substances on goethite.

Cadmium (Cd) is a hazardous heavy metal that poses a serious risk to human health through the food chain, with rice being a significant vector because of its tendency to accumulate Cd. Nitrogen (N), an essential element for plant growth, also affects the Cd absorption and accumulation in crops. This study investigated the effects of N application on Cd absorption and accumulation in Cd-contaminated soils. Potting experiment showed that increasing N concentrations significantly increased the plant biomass and Cd contents in rice tissues. Ammonium (NH4+) transporter gene OsAMT1.1 knockout led to a substantial reduction in Cd absorption and accumulation in all rice tissues compared to that in the wild-type plants. Specifically, osamt1.1 mutants increased the Cd content in culm tissues, whereas it was reduced in brown rice. In addition, OsAMT1.1 knockout reduced Cd2+ influx in roots under NH4+-N addition, although OsAMT1.1 lacked Cd transport ability when expressed in yeast. Gene expression analysis revealed that OsAMT1.1 knockout reduced Cd absorption-related genes (OsIRT1, OsNRAMP1, and OsNRAMP5) expression levels. These finding highlight the critical role of N supply and OsAMT1.1 in regulating the Cd content in rice, offering insights into the molecular mechanisms of Cd transportation in plants.

Abstract Background Selenium (Se) fertilizer and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to modulate cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plants. However, the effects of their co-application on wheat growth and soil microbial communities in Cd-contaminated soil are unclear. Results A pot experiment inoculation with two types of AMF and the application of Se fertilizer under Cd stress in wheat showed that inoculation AMF alone or combined with Se fertilizer significantly increased wheat biomass. Se and AMF alone or in combination significantly reduced available Cd concentration in wheat and soil, especially in the Se combined with Ri treatment. High throughput sequencing of soil samples indicated that Se and AMF application had stronger influence on bacterial community compared to fungal community and the bacterial network seemed to have more complex interconnections than the fungal network, and finally shaped the formation of specific microflora to affect Cd availability. Conclusion These results indicate that the application of Se and AMF, particularly in combination, could successfully decrease soil Cd availability and relieve the harm of Cd in wheat by modifying rhizosphere soil microbial communities.

Abstract Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging is an important tool for mapping tissue microstructure and structural connectivity non‐invasively in the in vivo human brain. Numerous diffusion signal models are proposed to quantify microstructural properties. Nonetheless, accurate estimation of model parameters is computationally expensive and impeded by image noise. Supervised deep learning‐based estimation approaches exhibit efficiency and superior performance but require additional training data and may be not generalizable. A new DIffusion Model OptimizatioN framework using physics‐informed and self‐supervised Deep learning entitled “DIMOND” is proposed to address this problem. DIMOND employs a neural network to map input image data to model parameters and optimizes the network by minimizing the difference between the input acquired data and synthetic data generated via the diffusion model parametrized by network outputs. DIMOND produces accurate diffusion tensor imaging results and is generalizable across subjects and datasets. Moreover, DIMOND outperforms conventional methods for fitting sophisticated microstructural models including the kurtosis and NODDI model. Importantly, DIMOND reduces NODDI model fitting time from hours to minutes, or seconds by leveraging transfer learning. In summary, the self‐supervised manner, high efficacy, and efficiency of DIMOND increase the practical feasibility and adoption of microstructure and connectivity mapping in clinical and neuroscientific applications.

During minimal invasive surgery (MIS), the laparoscope only provides a single viewpoint to the surgeon, leaving a lack of 3D perception. Many works have been proposed to obtain depth and 3D reconstruction by designing a new optical structure or by depending on the camera pose and image sequences. Most of these works modify the structure of the conventional laparoscopes and cannot provide 3D reconstruction of different magnification views. In this study, we propose a laparoscopic system based on double liquid lenses, which provide doctors with variable magnification rates, near observation, and real-time monocular 3D reconstruction. Our system composes of an optical structure that can obtain auto magnification change and autofocus without any physically moving element, and a deep learning network based on the Depth from Defocus (DFD) method, trained to suit inconsistent camera intrinsic situations and estimate depth from images of different focal lengths. The optical structure is portable and can be mounted on conventional laparoscopes. The depth estimation network estimates depth in real-time from monocular images of different focal lengths and magnification rates. Experiments show that our system provides a 0.68-1.44x zoom rate and can estimate depth from different magnification rates at 6fps. Monocular 3D reconstruction reaches at least 6mm accuracy. The system also provides a clear view even under 1mm close working distance. Ex-vivo experiments and implementation on clinical images prove that our system provides doctors with a magnified clear view of the lesion, as well as quick monocular depth perception during laparoscopy, which help surgeons get better detection and size diagnosis of the abdomen during laparoscope surgeries.

Background Different glial-autoantibodies-related paediatric optic neuritis (ON) are associated with different clinical characteristics and prognosis that require different treatments. Because glial autoantibody detection is not available in some parts of the world and there is often a delay in obtaining results, clinical factors that can be used to predict the subtype of paediatric ON are needed. Methods This was a single-centre retrospective cohort study. Children who presented with their first ON attack and with complete clinical data were included in the analysis. Single and multiple parameters for predicting paediatric myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobin-associated ON (MOG-ON) and aquaporin4 immunoglobin-related ON (AQP4-ON) were calculated. Results 78 paediatric patients had their first ON attack from January 2016 to December 2019, of whom 69 were included in the final analysis, including 33 MOG-ON cases, 17 AQP4-ON cases and 19 Seronegative-ON cases. For predicting paediatric MOG-ON, the most sensitive predictors were ‘male or optic disc swelling (ODS) or bilateral’ (sensitivity 0.97 (95% CI 0.82 to 1.00)) and ‘follow-up visual acuity (VA) ≤0.1 logMAR or ODS’ (sensitivity 0.97 (95% CI 0.82 to 1.00)), and the most specific factor was ‘Age ≤11 y and simultaneous CNS involvement’ (specificity 0.97 (95% CI 0.84 to 1.00)). For predicting paediatric AQP4-ON, the most sensitive predictor was ‘Female or without ODS’ (sensitivity 1.00 (95% CI 0.77 to 1.00)), and the most specific factors were Neurological history (sensitivity 0.94 (95% CI 0.83 to 0.98)) and follow-up VA >1.0 logMAR (sensitivity 0.96 (95% CI 0.86 to 0.99)). Conclusion According to our data from a Chinese paediatric cohort, using multiple parameters increases the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosing paediatric MOGON and AQP4-ON. Summary: Background: Effective monitoring and management are crucial during long-term home noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in patients with hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study investigated the benefit of Internet of Things (IOT)-based management of home NPPV. Methods: This multicenter, prospective, parallel-group, randomized controlled non-inferiority trial enrolled patients requiring long-term home NPPV for hypercapnic COPD. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1), via a computer-generated randomization sequence, to standard home management or IOT management based on telemonitoring of clinical and ventilator parameters over 12 months. The intervention was unblinded, but outcome assessment was blinded to management assignment. The primary outcome was the between-group comparison of the change in health-related quality of life, based on severe respiratory insufficiency questionnaire scores with a non-inferiority margin of −5. This study is registered with Chinese Clinical Trials Registry (No. ChiCTR1800019536). Findings: Overall, 148 patients (age: 72.7 ± 6.8 years; male: 85.8%; forced expiratory volume in 1 s: 0.7 ± 0.3 L; PaCO2: 66.4 ± 12.0 mmHg), recruited from 11 Chinese hospitals between January 24, 2019, and June 28, 2021, were randomly allocated to the intervention group (n = 73) or the control group (n = 75). Numerous studies have explored the effects of background music on reading comprehension, however, little is known about how native language (L1) lyrics and second language (L2) lyrics in background music influence reading comprehension performance for college students. The present study used a mixed experimental design to examine the effects of listening habits (between-participants variable: non-listeners or listeners), music type (between-participants variable: L1 (Mandarin) pop music, L2 (English) pop music or no music) and text language (within-participants variable: L1 or L2) on reading comprehension of college students in East China. A total of 90 participants (50 females) were screened into non- listeners (n = 45) and listeners (n = 45), and then were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Mandarin pop music group (n = 30), English pop music group (n = 30) and no music group (n = 30). The results showed that reading comprehension performance was negatively affected by music with lyrics compared to the no music condition. Furthermore, Chinese/English reading comprehension was reduced more by pop music in the same language as the written texts. As expected, non-listeners were more negatively affected by music with lyrics than listeners. For both listeners and non-listeners, average reading comprehension accuracy rates were the lowest in the condition of music with native language lyrics. Overall, our research findings indicate that listening to pop music with lyrics reduces reading comprehension performance. However, listening to background music cause much less distraction if the students commonly listen to music while reading. The current study supports the duplex-mechanism account of auditory distraction.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils has emerged as a significant concern, particularly due to its potential impact on plant-based food. Soil pH reductions can exacerbate Cd mobility, leading to excessive accumulation in crops. While liming has been demonstrated as an effective method to mitigate Cd accumulation in rice grains in acid soils of southern China, its efficacy in remediating acid soils in northern China remains unclear. In this study, a multi-year field experiment was conducted on farmland impacted by zinc ore smelting at coordinates of 33.92° N 112.46° E to investigate the use of limestone for controlling Cd accumulation in wheat and maize grains. The results indicated that applying 7.5 t ha−1 of limestone significantly raised the soil pH from 4.5 to 6.8 as anticipated. Different rates of limestone application (2.25, 4.45, and 7.50 t ha−1) reduced Cd bioavailability in the soil by 20–54%, and Cd accumulation in wheat grains by 5–38% and maize grains by 21–63%, without yield penalty. The remediation effects were sustained for at least 27 months, highlighting limestone as a promising ameliorant for smelting-affected farmland in northern China.

Abstract Background Selenium (Se) deficiency causes a series of health disorders in humans, and Se concentrations in the edible parts of crops can be improved by altering exogenous Se species. However, the uptake, transport, subcellular distribution and metabolism of selenite, selenate and SeMet (selenomethionine) under the influence of phosphorus (P) has not been well characterized. Results The results showed that increasing the P application rate enhanced photosynthesis and then increased the dry matter weight of shoots with selenite and SeMet treatment, and an appropriate amount of P combined with selenite treatment increased the dry matter weight of roots by enhancing root growth. With selenite treatment, increasing the P application rate significantly decreased the concentration and accumulation of Se in roots and shoots. P1 decreased the Se migration coefficient, which could be attributed to the inhibited distribution of Se in the root cell wall, but increased distribution of Se in the root soluble fraction, as well as the promoted proportion of SeMet and MeSeCys (Se-methyl-selenocysteine) in roots. With selenate treatment, P0.1 and P1 significantly increased the Se concentration and distribution in shoots and the Se migration coefficient, which could be attributed to the enhanced proportion of Se (IV) in roots but decreased proportion of SeMet in roots. With SeMet treatment, increasing the P application rate significantly decreased the Se concentration in shoots and roots but increased the proportion of SeCys2 (selenocystine) in roots. Conclusion Compared with selenate or SeMet treatment, treatment with an appropriate amount of P combined with selenite could promote plant growth, reduce Se uptake, alter Se subcellular distribution and speciation, and affect Se bioavailability in wheat.

Over the years, microbial community composition in the rhizosphere has been extensively studied as the most fascinating topic in microbial ecology. In general, plants affect soil microbiota through rhizodeposits and changes in abiotic conditions. However, a consensus on the response of microbiota traits to the rhizosphere and bulk soils in various ecosystems worldwide regarding community diversity and structure has not been reached yet. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of 101 studies to investigate the microbial community changes between the rhizosphere and bulk soils across various plant species (maize, rice, vegetables, other crops, herbaceous, and woody plants). Our results showed that across all plant species, plant rhizosphere effects tended to reduce the rhizosphere soil pH, especially in neutral or slightly alkaline soils. Beta-diversity of bacterial community was significantly separated between into rhizosphere and bulk soils. Moreover, r-strategists and copiotrophs (e.g. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) enriched by 24-27% in the rhizosphere across all plant species, while K-strategists and oligotrophic (e.g. Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadete, Nitrospirae, and Planctomycetes) decreased by 15-42% in the rhizosphere. Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi are also depleted by in the plant rhizosphere compared with the bulk soil by 7-14%. The Actinobacteria exhibited consistently negative effect sizes across all plant species, except for maize and vegetables. In Firmicutes, both herbaceous and woody plants showed negative responses to rhizosphere effects, but those in maize and rice were contrarily enriched in the rhizosphere. With regards to Chloroflexi, apart from herbaceous plants showing a positive effect size, the plant rhizosphere effects were consistently negative across all other plant types. Verrucomicrobia exhibited a significantly positive effect size in maize, whereas herbaceous plants displayed a negative effect size in the rhizosphere. Overall, our meta-analysis exhibited significant changes in microbial community structure and diversity responding to the plant rhizosphere effects depending on plant species, further suggesting the importance of plant rhizosphere to environmental changes influencing plants and subsequently their controls over the rhizosphere microbiota related to nutrient cycling and soil health.
