1. Aggravated Uncertainties, Researcher Resilience, and Ambiguous Positionality Doing Fieldwork in China Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: This paper aims to answer the research questions of ‘How did COVID-19 aggravate the uncertainties in geographical fieldwork, and how could the researchers cope with the challenges?’ Referring to the case study method in scrutinising a fieldwork case that has been conducted by the researchers on Chinese rural-urban migrants in 2020–2021, this research explores the multi-layers of increased uncertainties amid COVID-19. It reveals that that recent COVID-19 pandemic and its knocking-on effects have profound impacts on fieldwork in Chinese context: not only aggravating the scale of uncertainties, but also extending the uncertainties through several dimensions, including harder access to the field, more severe surveillance, which lead to fragile trust between informants and field researcher. The article further posits the significance of researcher’s resilience and reflectivity in fieldwork to address the emerging challenges, proposing adjusted positionality for researchers under the similar context of doing fieldwork in China amid COVID-19 pandemic.

2. The Magellanic Clouds Are Very Rare in the IllustrisTNG Simulations

Abstract: The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) form the closest interacting galactic system to the Milky Way, therewith providing a laboratory to test cosmological models in the local Universe. We quantify the likelihood for the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) to be observed within the ΛCDM model using hydrodynamical simulations of the IllustrisTNG project. The orbits of the MCs are constrained by proper motion measurements taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and Gaia. The MCs have a mutual separation of dMCs=24.5kpc and a relative velocity of vMCs=90.8kms−1, implying a specific phase-space density of fMCs,obs≡(dMCs·vMCs)−3=9.10×10−11km−3s3kpc−3. We select analogues to the MCs based on their stellar masses and distances in MW-like halos. None of the selected LMC analogues have a higher total mass and lower Galactocentric distance than the LMC, resulting in >3.75σ tension. We also find that the fMCs distribution in the highest resolution TNG50 simulation is in 3.95σ tension with observations. Thus, a hierarchical clustering of two massive satellites like the MCs in a narrow phase-space volume is unlikely in ΛCDM, presumably because of short merger timescales due to dynamical friction between the overlapping dark matter halos. We show that group infall led by an LMC analogue cannot populate the Galactic disc of satellites (DoS), implying that the DoS and the MCs formed in physically unrelated ways in ΛCDM. Since the 20∘ alignment of the LMC and DoS orbital poles has a likelihood of P=0.030 (2.17σ), adding this χ2 to that of fMCs gives a combined likelihood of P=3.90×10−5 (4.11σ).

3. Wind regime and sand transport in the mid-course of ten tributaries of the Yellow River, Inner Mongolia of China

Abstract: Better understanding the wind regimes and dune activity criteria are pre-requisites for the successful planning of any sand dune fixation project and hence have a high priority. To fully understand wind energy conditions and the intensity of aeolian activity, we investigated the wind conditions, sand-transporting potential, and sand-transporting capacity of the basins of mid-course ten tributaries of the Yellow River through field observations and indoor analyses. 1) The analysis of wind energy, which is based on sand transport potential, demonstrates that there is substantial spatial variation within the study area. The western part, which is located near the Kubuqi Desert, qualifies as a high wind energy zone. In contrast, the central part belongs to the medium wind energy zone, whereas the eastern part is categorized as a low wind energy zone. Even though there are notable differences in the sand transport potential characteristics across different time scales, the direction of the synthesized sand transport potential tends to be consistent, predominantly leaning towards the southeast. This orientation provides the requisite energy for the sand material to be transported into the river. 2) The prevailing sand-producing wind direction at various timescales in the research area was dominated by westward (W, WNW, NW) and northward (NNW, N) winds, with distinct seasonality. This seasonal variability was especially prominent in spring, which saw the highest frequency of aeolian activity and the largest volume of sand transport. Autumn and winter exhibited similar patterns, and, in the summer, it was the lowest 3) The relationship between sand-transporting potential and sand-transporting capacity, which is a crucial aspect of aeolian geomorphology, could be adequately depicted using a fitting function based on the temporal patterns of wind speed. During periods of high wind, the sand-transporting potential and sand-transporting capacity of the basins of the ten tributaries followed a power function relationship. Conversely, during periods of low wind, they followed an exponential function relationship. These results imply that spring should be deemed as the crucial period for wind-sand prevention and control. 4. Energy Evolution in the Progenitor of Galaxy Shells: A Semi-analytical Model

Abstract: The stellar shells surrounding an elliptical galaxy, as remnants of a dwarf galaxy disrupted during merging, reveal the distribution of energy and angular momentum of the progenitor dwarf galaxy. We develop a semi-analytical model to describe the changes in energy Δ E _i and angular momentum Δ Lz _i for particles during the first infall. We show that these changes, induced by the self-gravity of the progenitor, are important in broadening the initial energy distribution of the Plummer or Hernquist progenitor model. Consequently, these changes are crucial in shaping the shells. In the freefall stage following the disintegration of the progenitor potential, particles are no longer bound by self-gravity but move within the gravitational potential of the target galaxy. We investigate the relationship between the radial period and the energy of particles undergoing radial motion. We show that an accurate model of the energy range of the dwarf galaxy at disruption is essential to predict the number of observable shells.

5. Accommodation capacity evaluation of renewable energy in power systems considering peak and frequency regulation

Abstract: With the fast growth of renewable energy, the modern power systems are transitioning to the renewable energy dominated energy systems. However, the intrinsic intermittence and volatility of renewable energy also impose considerable challenges on the power system operation. Hence, it is of great significance to accurately evaluate the renewable energy accommodation capacity (REAC) in power system so as to effectively instruct the sustainable development of renewable energy and to alleviate the ongoing operational burdens. This paper proposes a novel evaluation method of REAC in power system comprehensively considering peak and frequency regulation. First, the mechanism and cost of deep peak regulation of thermal power units are deeply analyzed, and then the frequency dynamics response is modeled explicitly and simplified effectively. Next, a synthetic interaction model of “source-network-storage” is developed with diversified generation units, network and energy storage constraints. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization model is established considering both economic and technical issues, and a REAC evaluation method is developed by integrating an incremental capacity augment approach with the proposed multi-objective model. Finally, the proposed REAC evaluation method is tested on the modified IEEE 39-bus system, and the numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals are thought to play major roles in virus transmission. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of asymptomatic carriers with COVID-19 to control the spread of the virus. We retrospectively investigated the clinical characteristics of 648 consecutive subjects who were enrolled in the study and were divided into asymptomatic carriers, mild cases, ordinary cases, severe or critical cases, and evaluated their impact on disease severity by means of Spearman correlation and multiple regression analyses. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was conducted to determine the optimum cutoff levels of laboratory findings for diagnostic predictors of asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19. In our study, a total of 648 subjects on admission with a mean age of 45.61 y including 345 males and 303 females were enrolled in our study. The leukocyte, lymphocyte, eosinophil, platelet, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, CD3+, CD4+, and CD8 + T lymphocyte levels, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate differed significantly among the groups (all p ≤ 0.05). Abstract: As smart grid develops and renewables advance, challenges caused by uncertainties of renewables have been seriously threatening the energy system’s safe operation. Nowadays, the integrated electric-gas system (IEGS) plays a significant role in promoting the flexibility of modern grid owing to its great characteristic in accommodating renewable energy and coping with fluctuation and uncertainty of the system. And hydrogen, as an emerging and clean energy carrier, can further enhance the energy coupling of the IEGS and promote carbon neutralization with the development of power-to-hydrogen (P2H) technology and technology of blending hydrogen in the natural gas system. Dealing with the uncertainty of renewables, a robust schedule optimization model for the integrated electric and gas systems with blending hydrogen (IEGSH) considering the dynamics of gas is proposed and the iterative solving method based on column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm is implemented to solve the problem. Case studies on the IEGSH consisting of IEEE 39-bus power system and 27-node natural gas system validate the effectiveness of the dynamic energy flow model in depicting the transient process of gas transmission. The effectiveness of the proposed robust day-ahead scheduling model in dealing with the intra-day uncertainty of wind power is also verified. Additionally, the carbon emission reduction resulting from the blending of hydrogen is evaluated.

8. Multi-objective coordination control of distributed power flow controller

Abstract: In this paper, distributed power flow controller (DPFC) constraints are analyzed. The energy balance relationship between fundamental wave and third harmonic in series and shunt-side converter is deduced. A proportional integral (PI) controller of the DPFC is constructed. The PI controller uses the voltage amplitude and phase angle injected into the system in the series side, along with the modulation ratio of the three-phase converter on the shunt side as the control variables. A multi-objective coordinated control equation is proposed, which factors the constraints of the energy balance between series and shunt side, device capacity limit, safe operation limit, fundamental component, as well as third harmonic component of the injection voltage at the series side. The equation minimizes the variance between the actual value of the control target and its given value to ensure that the DC capacitor voltage, both in the series and shunt side, is stable at target value. Simulations are conducted to verify correctness and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

9. From Galactic Bars to the Hubble Tension: Weighing Up the Astrophysical Evidence for Milgromian Gravity

Abstract: Astronomical observations reveal a major deficiency in our understanding of physics—the detectable mass is insufficient to explain the observed motions in a huge variety of systems given our current understanding of gravity, Einstein’s General theory of Relativity (GR). This missing gravity problem may indicate a breakdown of GR at low accelerations, as postulated by Milgromian dynamics (MOND). We review the MOND theory and its consequences, including in a cosmological context where we advocate a hybrid approach involving light sterile neutrinos to address MOND’s cluster-scale issues. We then test the novel predictions of MOND using evidence from galaxies, galaxy groups, galaxy clusters, and the large-scale structure of the universe. We also consider whether the standard cosmological paradigm (ΛCDM) can explain the observations and review several previously published highly significant falsifications of it. Our overall assessment considers both the extent to which the data agree with each theory and how much flexibility each has when accommodating the data, with the gold standard being a clear a priori prediction not informed by the data in question. Our conclusion is that MOND is favoured by a wealth of data across a huge range of astrophysical scales, ranging from the kpc scales of galactic bars to the Gpc scale of the local supervoid and the Hubble tension, which is alleviated in MOND through enhanced cosmic variance. We also consider several future tests, mostly at scales much smaller than galaxies.

Abstract: SiC/MoSi2-SiC-Si coatings for nuclear graphite spheres with different Si-Mo ratios were prepared through two-step pack cementation. XRD, SEM and EDS techniques were used to analyze the composition and microstructure of the coatings. The oxidation resistance performance of the composites at 1773 K, in static air, was investigated. The results showed that the SiC-MoSi2-Si coating could be divided into a denser inner layer and a loose outer layer, as free Si would infiltrate into the inner micropores of the coating under capillary force. When the Si/Mo ratio of the second pack cementation was 7:1, the thickness of the denser inner layer basically reached the maximum and exhibited excellent oxidation resistance ability, with a weight gain of 0.19% after 200 h oxidation. The performance improvement was analyzed as a result of the addition of SiC and C powder in the pack cementation process, effectively increasing the phase interfaces to relax the thermal stress in the coating. With different Si-Mo ratios, the content of residual Si and the formation rate of SiO2 glass layer on the coating surface were also different, thus affecting the anti-oxidation performance. The main reactions occurring at different stages of the oxidation curve were also discussed.

Abstract: Abstract Background Evidence concerning the efficacy and safety of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in patients with influenza A (H7N9) has been was limited to case reports. Our study is aimed to investigate the current application, efficacy and safety of ECMO in for severe H7N9 pneumonia-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in the Chinese population. Methods A multicentre retrospective cohort study was conducted at 20 hospitals that admitted patients with avian influenza A (H7N9) viral pneumonia patients’ admission from 9 provinces in China between October 1, 2016, and March 1, 2017. Data from the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China, including general conditions, outcomes and ECMO management, were analysed. Then, successfully weaned and unsuccessfully weaned groups were compared. Results A total of 35 patients, aged 57 ± 1 years, were analysed; 65.7% of patients were male with 63% mortality. All patients underwent invasive positive pressure ventilation (IPPV), and rescue ventilation strategies were implemented for 23 cases (65.7%) with an average IPPV duration of 5 ± 1 d, PaO2/FiO2 of 78 ± 23 mmHg, tidal volume (VT) of 439 ± 61 ml and plateau pressure (Pplat) of 29 ± 8 cmH2O pre-ECMO. After 48 h on ECMO, PaO2 improved from 56 ± 21 mmHg to 90 ± 24 mmHg and PaCO2 declined from 52 ± 24 mmHg to 38 ± 24 mmHg. Haemorrhage, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and barotrauma occurred in 45.7%, 60% and 8.6% of patients, respectively. Abstract: Abstract The Photovoltaic (PV) plants are significantly different from the conventional synchronous generators in terms of physical and electrical characteristics, as it connects to the power grid through the voltage-source converters. High penetration PV in power system will bring several critical challenges to the safe operation of power grid including transient stability. To address this problem, the paper proposes a control strategy to help the PVs work like a synchronous generator with variable inertia by energy storage system (ESS). First, the overall control strategy of the PV-based virtual synchronous generator (PV-VSG) is illustrated. Then the control strategies for the variable inertia of the PV-VSG are designed to attenuate the transient energy of the power system after the fault. Simulation results of a simple power system show that the PV-VSG could utilize the energy preserved in the ESS to balance the transient energy variation of power grid after fault and improve the transient stability of the power system.

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plays an important role in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the lack of adequate and scientifically rigorous evidence has limited its application in this disorder. Sanbai melon seed oil (SMSO) is used in folk medicine to treat DM; however, only few literature reports exist regarding its mechanism. Herein, we aimed to confirm the antidiabetic activity of SMSO in a T2DM model and further elucidate its possible mechanisms. The T2DM rat model was induced by high-fat and sugar diet and streptozocin (STZ, 40 mg/kg). SMSO was administered at doses of 0.7 g/kg, 1.4 g/kg, and 2.8 g/kg. Several biochemical parameters and antioxidant protein levels were measured to evaluate the hyperglycemic and antioxidant activities of SMSO. 14. Testing the equivalence principle via the shadow of black holes

Abstract: We study the equivalence principle, regarded as the cornerstone of general relativity, by analyzing the deformation observable of black hole shadows. Such deformation can arise from new physics and may be expressed as a phenomenological violation of the equivalence principle. Specifically, we assume that there is an additional background vector field that couples to the photons around the supermassive black hole. This type of coupling yields impact on the way the system depends on initial conditions and affects the black hole shadow at different wavelengths by a different amount, and therefore observations of the shadow in different wavelengths could constrain such couplings. This can be tested by future multiband observations. Adopting a specific form of the vector field, we obtain constraints on model parameters from Event Horizon Telescope observations and measurements of gas/stellar orbits.

15. The Electric Current Effect on Electrochemical Deconsolidation of Spherical Fuel Elements

Abstract: For High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor in China, fuel particles are bonded into spherical fuel elements by a carbonaceous matrix. For the study of fuel failure mechanism from individual fuel particles, an electrochemical deconsolidation apparatus was developed in this study to separate the particles from the carbonaceous matrix by disintegrating the matrix into fine graphite powder. The deconsolidated graphite powder and free particles were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and ceramography. The results showed that the morphology, size distribution, and element content of deconsolidated graphite matrix and free particles were notably affected by electric current intensity. The electrochemical deconsolidation mechanism of spherical fuel element was also discussed.

16. A Study on Neutral-Point Potential in Three-Level NPC Converters

Abstract: This paper proposes an accurate mathematical model of three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converters that can accurately represent the midpoint potential drift of the DC link with parameter perturbation. The mathematical relationships between the fluctuation in neutral-point voltage, the parametric perturbation, and the capacitance error are obtained as mathematical expressions in this model. The expressions can be used to quantitatively analyze the reason for the neutral-point voltage imbalance and balancing effect based on a zero-sequence voltage injection. The injected zero-sequence voltage, which can be used to balance the DC-side voltages with the combined action of active current, can be easily obtained from the proposed model. A balancing control under four-quadrant operation modes is proposed by considering the active current to verify the effectiveness of this model. Both the simulation and experiment results validate the excellent performance of the proposed model compared to the conventional model.

Abstract: This paper theoretically analyzes the optical transmission characteristics of an optical waveguide when coupling to a micro cavity array. The results showed that not only were there sharp peaks on the transmission and reflection spectra, but also that a certain system configuration can produce a backward wave to obtain a phase shift in the small detuning range between the incident wave and the micro cavities. Based on a discussion of the relationship between the transmission and the number and the dissipation coefficients of each coupled micro cavity, the paper proposes a high efficiency all-optical switch model.

Abstract: We conduct hydrodynamical MOND simulations of isolated disc galaxies over the stellar mass range $M_{\star}/M_\odot = 10^7 - 10^{11}$ using the adaptive mesh refinement code \textsc{phantom of ramses} (\textsc{por}), an adaptation of the \textsc{ramses} code with a Milgromian gravity solver. The scale lengths and gas fractions are based on observed galaxies, and the simulations are run for 5~Gyr. The main aim is to see whether existing sub-grid physics prescriptions for star formation and stellar feedback reproduce the observed main sequence and reasonably match the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation that captures how the local and global star formation rates relate to other properties. Star formation in the models starts soon after initialisation and continues as the models evolve. The initialized galaxies indeed evolve to a state which is on the observed main sequence, and reasonably matches the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. The available formulation of sub-grid physics is therefore adequate and leads to galaxies that largely behave like observed galaxies, grow in radius, and have flat rotation curves $-$ provided we use Milgromian gravitation. Furthermore, the strength of the bars tends to be inversely correlated with the stellar mass of the galaxy, whereas the bar length strongly correlates with the stellar mass. Irrespective of the mass, the bar pattern speed stays constant with time, indicating that dynamical friction does not affect the bar dynamics. The models demonstrate Renzo's rule and form structures at large radii, much as in real galaxies. In this framework, baryonic physics is thus sufficiently understood to not pose major uncertainties in our modelling of global galaxy properties., 22 pages, 23 figures. Abstract: Background: Current management practices and outcomes in weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation are poorly understood. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, management, timings, risk for failure, and outcomes of weaning in patients requiring at least 2 days of invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods: WEAN SAFE was an international, multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study done in 481 intensive care units in 50 countries. Eligible participants were older than 16 years, admitted to a participating intensive care unit, and receiving mechanical ventilation for 2 calendar days or longer. We defined weaning initiation as the first attempt to separate a patient from the ventilator, successful weaning as no reintubation or death within 7 days of extubation, and weaning eligibility criteria based on positive end-expiratory pressure, fractional concentration of oxygen in inspired air, and vasopressors. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients successfully weaned at 90 days. Key secondary outcomes included weaning duration, timing of weaning events, factors associated with weaning delay and weaning failure, and hospital outcomes. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03255109. Findings: Between Oct 4, 2017, and June 25, 2018, 10 232 patients were screened for eligibility, of whom 5869 were enrolled. 4523 (77·1%) patients underwent at least one separation attempt and 3817 (65·0%) patients were successfully weaned from ventilation at day 90. 237 (4·0%) patients were transferred before any separation attempt, 153 (2·6%) were transferred after at least one separation attempt and not successfully weaned, and 1662 (28·3%) died while invasively ventilated. The median time from fulfilling weaning eligibility criteria to first separation attempt was 1 day (IQR 0-4), and 1013 (22·4%) patients had a delay in initiating first separation of 5 or more days. Abstract: As the basis of land resource allocation and land use planning, land-use functions (LUFs) are important indicators for evaluating the sustainable development of land and environments. It is essential to evaluate the LUFs of a specific area from the perspective of land-use comprehensive functions. This paper takes 38 districts and counties in Chongqing, China, as an example to construct a state-space model from three aspects, production factors, living factors, and ecological factors, which affect the functions of land resources. The paper continues to construct an evaluation index system and determine indicators by entropy methods to calculate and evaluate the spatial differentiation of land-use functions in Chongqing. The results show that the value of land-use multi-functions in Chongqing can be divided into three levels. The results are characterized by the gradual weakening of the main urban area and the polarization effect is strong. The distribution characteristics of this result are caused by the differences in traffic conditions, geographical location, the quality of natural conditions, economic levels, planning policies, etc. In the end, this paper proposes relative suggestions for the facet of eco-friendly production and development to strengthen future policy guidance. Future studies can continue to improve the index system and study the spatio-temporal effects of LUFs from a microscopic perspective to make the results more accurate.

Abstract: GRO J1008-57, as a Be/X-ray transient pulsar, is considered to have the highest magnetic field in known neutron star X-ray binary systems. Observational data of the X-ray outbursts in GRO J1008-57 from 2017 to 2020 were collected by the Insight-HXMT satellite. In this work, the spin period of the neutron star in GRO J1008-57 was determined to be about 93.28 seconds in August 2017, 93.22 seconds in February 2018, 93.25 seconds in June 2019 and 93.14 seconds in June 2020. GRO J1008-57 evolved in the spin-up process with a mean rate of − ( 2.10 ± 0.05 ) × 10−4 s/d from 2009 – 2018, and turned into a spin down process with a rate of ( 6.7 ± 0.6 ) × 10−5 s/d from Feb 2018 to June 2019. During the type II outburst of 2020, GRO J1008-57 had the spin-up torque again. During the torque reversals, the pulse profiles and continuum X-ray spectra did not change significantly, and the cyclotron resonant scattering feature around 80 keV was only detected during the outbursts in 2017 and 2020. Based on the observed mean spin-up rate, we estimated the inner accretion disk radius in GRO J1008-57 (about 1 - 2 times of the Alfven radius) by comparing different accretion torque models of magnetic neutron stars. During the spin-down process, the magnetic torque should dominate over the matter accreting inflow torque, and we constrained the surface dipole magnetic field B ≥ 6 × 10 12 G for the neutron star in GRO J1008-57, which is consistent with the magnetic field strength obtained by cyclotron line centroid energy.

Abstract: Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD), a deadly symptom in sepsis patients, is mainly caused by cardiovascular inflammation. However, it remains unclear how systemic inflammation triggers and aggravates cardiovascular inflammation in the pathogenesis of SIMD. This study found that proinflammatory cytokines and H2 O2 concentrations were significantly induced in SIMD-mice. In particular, a microarray analysis of CD63+ exosomes isolated from sham- and SIMD-monocytes revealed a significant induction of thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) and NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3). We proved that oxidative stress caused the disassociation of the TXNIP-TRX2 (thioredoxin 2) complex and the assembly of the TXNIP-NLRP3 complex. In addition, this finding showed that the latter complex could be embedded into CD63+ exosomes and traffic from monocytes to the resident heart macrophages, where it activated caspase-1 and cleaved inactive interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and IL-18. Furthermore, using an amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay (Alpha) with GST-TXNIP and His-NLRP3, we obtained a small molecule named PSSM1443 that could disrupt the TXNIP-NLRP3 interaction in vitro, impairing NLRP3 downstream events. Of note, after administering PSSM1443 to the SIMD-mice, we found the small molecule could significantly suppress the activation of caspase-1 and the cleavage of pro-IL-1β and pro-IL-18, reducing inflammation in the SIMD-mice. Collectively, our results reveal that monocyte-derived exosomes harbor the overexpressed TXNIP-NLRP3 complex, which traffics from circulating monocytes to local macrophages and promotes the cleavage of inactive IL-1β and IL-18 in the macrophages, aggravating cardiovascular inflammation. PSSM1443 functions as an inhibitor of the TXNIP-NLRP3 complex and its administration can decrease inflammation in SIMD-mice.

Abstract: Introduction: Obese patients are often accompanied by hyperleptinemia and prone to develop liver fibrosis. Accumulating data including those obtained from human studies suggested the promotion role of leptin in liver fibrosis. The remodeling of the DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism for regulating gene expression and is essential for hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation, a key step in liver fibrogenesis. Leptin increases the expression of methionine adenosyltransferase 2A (MAT2A) which is associated with DNA methylation and HSC activation. Curcumin, an active polyphenol of the golden spice turmeric, inhibits leptin-induced HSC activation and liver fibrogenesis. Thus, the present research aimed to investigate the influence of curcumin on the roles of leptin in MAT2A expression in HSCs. Methods: The in vivo experiments were conducted by using leptin-deficient obese mice. The gene expressions were examined by Western blot, real-time PCR, promoter activity assay, and immunostaining analysis. Results: Curcumin reduced leptin-induced MAT2A expression. JNK signaling contributed to leptin-induced increase in MAT2A level, which could be interrupted by curcumin treatment. Curcumin inhibited leptin-induced MAT2A promoter activity by influencing MAT2A promoter fragments between −2,847 bp and − 2,752 bp and between −2,752 bp and +49 bp. The effect of curcumin on leptin-induced MAT2A expression paralleled the reductions in leptin-induced activated HSCs and liver fibrosis. Conclusion: These results might have implications for curcumin inhibition of the liver fibrogenesis in obese patients with hyperleptinemia.

Abstract: Engineering the composition and structure of Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts has exhibited great promise for enhancing activity and durability in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). However, it remains a great challenge to completely achieve this goal because of sluggish kinetics and surface CO poisoning. Herein, we successfully constructed trimetallic PtNiCo branched nanocages via a simple etching treatment. The trimetallic PtNiCo nanocages exhibited outstanding activity and durability in both acidic ORR and MOR. Strikingly, the mass activity of the catalyst in ORR and MOR reached 1.03 A mgPt−1 and 2.82 A mgPt−1, with 13.8- and 5.6-times enhancement of specific activity compared to Pt/C. Detailed investigations reveal that the most optimized electronic structure for the d-band center (a 0.17 eV downshift compared to pure Pt) by the alloying effect of Co and Ni contributed to the enhanced performances and great CO-tolerance of such unique Pt-based catalysts, which provide a new perspective for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for commercial fuel cells.

Abstract: Background We studied patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a virus that originated in Wuhan, China, and is spreading over the country including Jiangsu Province. We studied the clinical characteristics and therapies of severe cases in Jiangsu Province. Methods A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze clinical, laboratory data and treatment of 60 severe cases with COVID-19 infection in Jiangsu Province between January 24, 2020 and April 20, 2020. The improvement and deterioration subgroups were compared to identify predictors of disease progression. Results A total of 653 infected cases with COVID-19 were reported in Jiangsu Province, of which 60 severe cases were included in this study. Up until April 20, 2020, the mortality of severe patients was 0%. The median age was 57 years. The average body mass index (BMI) of these patients was 25 kg/m². White blood cell counts decreased in 45.0% of patients, lymphopenia in 63.3%, thrombocytopenia in 13.3%, and procalcitonin levels in 88.3% of the patients were less than 0.5 ng/mL. There were no statistically significant differences in immunoglobulin therapy and glucocorticoids therapy between the improvement and deterioration subgroups. Logistic regression analysis identified higher levels of troponin T (odds ratio [OR]: 1.04; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.00-1.08; P=0.04), antiviral therapy with aerosol inhalation of interferon (OR: 6.33; 95% CI: 1.18-33.98; P=0.03), and the application of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (OR: 1.99; 95%CI: 1.17-3.41; P=0.01) as predictors of disease progression, whereas higher lymphocyte count (OR: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.02-0.57; P=0.01) and early prone ventilation were associated with improvement (OR: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.01-0.98; P=0.04). Conclusions COVID-19 infection had a low mortality rate in Jiangsu Province, China. The higher levels of troponin T and lower lymphocyte count were predictors of disease progression. Early prone ventilation may be an effective treatment for severe cases.

Abstract: A new black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) MAXI J1535-571 was discovered by MAXI during its outburst in 2017. Using observations taken by the first Chinese X-ray satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT), we perform a joint spectral analysis (2-150 keV) in both energy and time domains. The energy spectra provide the essential input for probing the intrinsic Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) fractional rms spectra (FRS). Our results show that during the intermediate state, the energy spectra are in general consistent with those reported by Swift/XRT and NuSTAR. However, the QPO FRS become harder and the FRS residuals may suggest the presence of either an additional power-law component in the energy spectrum or a turn-over in the intrinsic QPO FRS at high energies.

Abstract: We study the 2018 outburst of Aql X-1 via the monitor of all sky X-ray image (MAXI) data. We show that the outburst starting in February 2018 is a member of short-low class in the frame of outburst duration and the peak count rate although the outburst morphology is slightly different from the other fast-rise-exponential-decay (FRED) type outbursts with a milder rising stage. We study the partial accretion in the weak propeller stage of Aql X-1 via the MAXI data of the 2018 outburst. We report on the spectral analysis of 3 observations of Aquila X-1 obtained by Insight – hard X-ray modulation telescope (Insight-HXMT) during the late decay stage of the 2018 outburst. We discuss that the data taken by Insight-HXMT is just after the transition to the weak propeller stage. Our analysis shows the necessity of a comptonization component to take into account the existence of an electron cloud resulting photons partly up-scattered.

40. The NCOA1-CBP-NF-κB transcriptional complex induces inflammation response and triggers endotoxin-induced myocardial dysfunction

Abstract: Inflammatory pathways represented by TLR4/NF-κB (Toll-like receptor 4/Nuclear factor-κB) axis signaling are activated in the pathogenesis of endotoxin-induced myocardial dysfunction (EIMD). However, the underlying mechanism by which NF-κB coordinates with other transcriptional coactivators/corepressors to regulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokine genes remains unclear. We established an EIMD-mouse model by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and we discovered that NCOA1 (nuclear receptor coactivator 1) assembled with CBP (CREB binding protein) and NF-κB subunits to form a transcriptional complex that specifically bound to promoters of proinflammatory cytokine genes to activate their expression. LPS treatment also inhibited DNMT1 (DNA methyltransferase 1) expression, thereby decreasing DNA methylation of a CpG island located on the promoter of NCOA1 and causing NCOA1 overexpression. Screening small molecules that abolished NCOA1-CBP interaction in a yeast system identified a compound PSSM2126 that effectively blocked the NCOA1-CBP interaction in vitro and in vivo. Administration of PSSM2126 to EIMD mice significantly alleviated the inflammation response and improved cardiac function. Collectively, our results reveal that an NCOA1-dependent transactivation mechanism can regulate proinflammatory cytokine expression, thereby improving our understanding of the activation of NF-κB targets. The promising inhibition of the NCOA1-CBP interaction by PSSM2126 may provide a new therapeutic option for EIMD.

Abstract: Due to their low surface brightness, dwarf galaxies are particularly susceptible to tidal forces. The expected degree of disturbance depends on the assumed gravity law and whether they have a dominant dark halo. This makes dwarf galaxies useful for testing different gravity models. In this project, we use the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) dwarf galaxy catalogue to compare the properties of dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster with those predicted by the Lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) standard model of cosmology and Milgromian dynamics (MOND). We construct a test particle simulation of the Fornax system. We then use the MCMC method to fit this to the FDS distribution of tidal susceptibility $\eta$ (half-mass radius divided by theoretical tidal radius), the fraction of dwarfs that visually appear disturbed as a function of $\eta$, and the distribution of projected separation from the cluster centre. This allows us to constrain the $\eta$ value at which dwarfs should get destroyed by tides. Accounting for an $r'$-band surface brightness limit of 27.8 magnitudes per square arcsec, the required stability threshold is $\eta_{\textrm{destr}} = 0.25^{+0.07}_{-0.03}$ in $\Lambda$CDM and $ 1.88^{+0.85}_{-0.53}$ in MOND. The $\Lambda$CDM value is in tension with previous $\textit{N}$-body dwarf galaxy simulations, which indicate that $\eta_{\textrm{destr}} \approx 1$. Our MOND $\textit{N}$-body simulations indicate that $\eta_{\textrm{destr}} = 1.70 \pm 0.30$, which agrees well with our MCMC analysis of the FDS. We therefore conclude that the observed deformations of dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster and the lack of low surface brightness dwarfs towards its centre are incompatible with $\Lambda$CDM expectations but well consistent with MOND., Comment: 35 pages, 24 figures, 4 tables, 7.5 MB. Abstract: We present hydrodynamical star-forming simulations in the Milgromian dynamics (MOND) framework of a gas-rich disc galaxy with properties similar to AGC 114905, which has recently been argued to have a rotation curve (RC) that is inconsistent with the MOND prediction. Our first model considers the galaxy in isolation, while our second model includes an external field of $0.05 \, a_{_0}$, the estimated gravitational field from large-scale structure. We show that isophotes in the face-on view can differ from circular at the 50% level. This could mislead observers into overestimating the inclination $i$ between disc and sky planes. Because RCs require a correction factor of $1/\sin i$, the actual RC could be much higher than reported by observers. Abstract: SiC/YSiC composite coating was prepared on the surface of matrix graphite sphere by pack cementation and molten salt process to improve the anti-oxidation property of the matrix graphite. According to the experiment results, the composition of the composite coatings prepared with different Y content is the same. While, the crushing model and strength is different. The maximum crushing strength is 1716.2 N when Y content is 1 g. The different coating structure were analyzed according to the results. The coating is composed of inner original SiC layer and outer new formed Si layer when Y content is 0.25 g. When the addition of Y were 0.5 g and 0.75 g, the coating consists of a newly formed YC2 layer inside, a SiC layer in the middle and an external Si layer. The final coating structure is composed of SiC layer and residual Si and YC2 layers when Y content is 1 g.

Abstract: A dense SiC coating was prepared by fluidized-bed chemical vapor deposition (FB-CVD) process to protect matrix graphite sphere of high temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel element from oxidation. The effect of deposition temperature, atmosphere and the formation mechanisms of the SiC coatings were analyzed. Results show that deposition temperature has a significant influence on coating composition. At lower temperature, the co-deposition of Si occurs; while the co-deposition of C occurs at higher temperature. The atmosphere also can influence the coating phase composition. When the deposition is processed at 1773 K, there appears free Si in the SiC coating with the increase of the concentration of H2 in the atmosphere. The density of the deposited coatings can reach up to 90% of the theoretical density of SiC. The research results show that FB-CVD is an ideal choice for preparing dense SiC coating on the surface of high temperature gas-cooled reactor matrix graphite spheres.

Abstract: Astronomical observations reveal a major deficiency in our understanding of physics $-$ the detectable mass is insufficient to explain the observed motions in a huge variety of systems given our current understanding of gravity, Einstein's General theory of Relativity (GR). This missing gravity problem may indicate a breakdown of GR at low accelerations, as postulated by Milgromian dynamics (MOND). We review the MOND theory and its consequences, including in a cosmological context where we advocate a hybrid approach involving light sterile neutrinos to address MOND's cluster-scale issues. We then test the novel predictions of MOND using evidence from galaxies, galaxy groups, galaxy clusters, and the large-scale structure of the Universe. We also consider whether the standard cosmological paradigm ($\Lambda$CDM) can explain the observations and review several previously published highly significant falsifications of it. Our overall assessment considers both the extent to which the data agree with each theory and how much flexibility each has when accommodating the data, with the gold standard being a clear $a~priori$ prediction not informed by the data in question. Our conclusion is that MOND is favoured by a wealth of data across a huge range of astrophysical scales, ranging from the kpc scales of galactic bars to the Gpc scale of the local supervoid and the Hubble tension, which is alleviated in MOND through enhanced cosmic variance. Abstract: (Abridged) Dynamical friction can be used to distinguish Newtonian gravity and modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) because it works differently in these frameworks. This concept, however, has yet to be explored very much with MOND. Previous simulations showed weaker dynamical friction during major mergers for MOND than for Newtonian gravity with dark matter. Analytic arguments suggest the opposite for minor mergers. In this work, we verify the analytic predictions for MOND by high-resolution $N$-body simulations of globular clusters (GCs) moving in isolated ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). We test the MOND analog of the Chandrasekhar formula for the dynamical friction proposed by S\'anchez-Salcedo on a single GC. We also explore whether MOND allows GC systems of isolated UDGs to survive without sinking into nuclear star clusters. The simulations are run using the adaptive-mesh-refinement code Phantom of Ramses. The mass resolution is $20\,M_\odot$ and the spatial resolution $50\,$pc. The GCs are modeled as point masses. Simulations including a single GC reveal that, as long as the apocenter of the GC is over about 0.5 effective radii, the S\'anchez-Salcedo formula works excellently, with an effective Coulomb logarithm increasing with orbital circularity. Once the GC reaches the central kiloparsec, its sinking virtually stops, likely because of the core stalling mechanism. In simulations with multiple GCs, many of them sink toward the center, but the core stalling effect seems to prevent them from forming a nuclear star cluster. The GC system ends up with a lower velocity dispersion than the stars of the galaxy. Abstract: In High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR)s, coated fuel particles are dispersed in a graphite matrix, which forms both compact and spherical fuel elements. As for the post irradiation examination (PIE) of HTGR irradiated fuels, the electrochemical deconsolidation method in which graphite matrix is disintegrated into graphite powder is one of the feasible processing methods. The graphite matrix is composed of natural graphite, artificial graphite and glassy carbon from carbonized resin, which have different effects on electrochemical deconsolidation. In this work, synthesized graphite matrix specimens were produced by intentionally varying the resin binder content in the graphite matrix raw materials from 5% to 50%, in order to investigate the electrochemical deconsolidation mechanism of graphite matrix in HTGR fuel elements. The results showed that increasing the glassy carbon content increased the degree of chemical oxidation, with more pronounced production of graphite oxide. The driving force for graphite matrix deconsolidation is proposed to be a synergetic effect of the expansion stress around closed- and through-hole microstructure originating from oxidatively destroyed graphite layers. This work will not only help to more thoroughly understand the electrochemical deconsolidation procedure of HTGR fuels, but also contribute to the development of a feasible method to manage radioactive graphite waste.
