The primary outcome was the mean change in systolic blood pressure (SBP) from baseline to week 8.Results: The placebo-corrected SBP reductions of the half-dose, third-dose, quarter-dose combination, amlodipine 10 mg, amlodipine 5 mg and losartan 100 mg treatments were − 17.2, − 19.5, − 14.9, − 18.5, − 11.3 and − 9.9 mmHg, respectively. The BP control and response rates were significantly higher in the half-dose, third-dose, and quarter-dose combination groups than in the placebo group (all p < 0.01). Despite no intergroup differences in study drug-related adverse events, ankle circumference increased significantly in the amlodipine group compared to those in the combination treatment groups. The quarter-dose combination, amlodipine 5 mg, and losartan 100 mg groups showed similar SBP reduction and BP response rates. The SBP reduction and BP response rate in the third-dose and half-dose combination groups were not significantly different from those in the amlodipine 10 mg group but superior to those in the losartan 100 mg group.Conclusion: Low-dose triple combination therapies could be effective as antihypertensive therapies.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03897868.Keywords: hypertension, blood pressure, combination therapy, low-dose, amlodipine, losartan, chlorthalidone

Treatments lasted 8 weeks.Results: Efficacy was analyzed using data from 276 patients. Sitting systolic and diastolic blood pressures differed between the NEBI/RSV and RSV groups (LSmean difference = − 5.89 and − 5.99 mmHg; 95% confidence interval [CI] = − 9.88 to − 1.90 mmHg and − 8.13 to − 3.84 mmHg, respectively). Reductions in the two pressures did not differ between the NEB/RSV and NEB groups. The percent reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol differed between the NEBI/RSV and NEBI groups (LSmean difference = − 47.76%, 95% CI = − 52.69 to − 42.84%) but not between the NEBI/RSV and RSV groups. The blood pressure (BP) control rate was higher in the NEBI/RSV group than in the RVS group (51.09% vs 29.67%, p = 0.003). The LDL cholesterol goal achievement rate was higher in the NEBI/RSV group than in the NEBI group (85.87% vs 11.83%, p < 0.001). The incidence of adverse drug reactions in the NEBI/RSV, RSV, and NEBI groups was 8.51%, 7.45%, and 8.60%, respectively (p = 0.950).Conclusion: Nebivolol plus rosuvastatin treatment is effective in reducing BP and LDL cholesterol levels and is safe in patients with hypertension and hypercholesterolemia without the loss of BP or the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect of each drug.Trial Registration: CRIS registration number KCT0002148.Keywords: hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, nebivolol, rosuvastatin

In order to analyze the connection between CFS and the facet joint hypertrophy, we devised a new morphological parameter, called the cervical facet joint cross-sectional area (CFJA). The CFJA has not yet been investigated for its association with CFS. We hypothesized that the CFJA is an important morphologic parameter in the diagnosis of CFS.Patients and methods: All patients over 50 years of age were included. Data regarding the CFJA were collected from 160 subjects with CFS. A total of 162 control individuals underwent cervical spine magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) as part of a routine medical examination. Axial T2-weighted CMRI images were acquired from all subjects. We used a picture archiving system to analyze the cross-sectional area of the bone margin of the cervical facet joint at the level of the most stenotic cervical spine in the axial plane.Results: The average CFJA was 109.07±20.91 mm2, in the control group, and 126.75±22.59 mm2, in the CFS group. Using an impact-parameter tag to select an enriched sample of Z0bb» events, we have measured the difference between the average charged multiplicity of bb» and all hadronic Z0 decays to be 2.11.8(stat) 0.6(syst) tracks per event. The resulting total (nonleading) charged multiplicity for Z0 bb» events is 23.1(12.0)1.8 0.6 tracks. A comparison of this nonleading multiplicity to hadronic multiplicity data in the range of 10 to 60 GeV supports the hypothesis of flavor-independent hadronic fragmentation, and yields a measurement of the average energy fraction of bottom hadrons in Z0 decays of xEb=0.620.100.04. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have measured the fraction of bb» events in hadronic Z0 decays, Rbb», using the vertex detector system of the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We tag bb» events by requiring the coincidence of three or more tracks with significant impact parameters. This tag is 50% efficient and results in a sample of 85% purity. We find Rbb»=0.251+0.049+0.030, in good agreement with other measurements and the standard model prediction. © 1991 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A search for pair production of stable charged particles from Z decay has been performed with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. Particle masses are determined from momentum, ionization energy loss, and time-of-flight measurements. A limit excluding pair production of stable fourth-generation charged leptons and stable mirror fermions with masses between the muon mass and 36.3 GeV/c2 is set at the 95% confidence level. Pair production of stable supersymmetric scalar leptons with masses between the muon mass and 32.6 GeV/c2 is also excluded. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have searched for supersymmetric particles in 528 Z decays with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We place 95%-confidence-level lower mass limits on degenerate squarks, nondegenerate up-type squarks, nondegenerate down-type squarks, charginos, pair-produced unstable neutralinos, and neutralinos from associated production. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Using the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider, we search for decays of the Z boson to a pair of nonminimal Higgs bosons (ZHs0Hp0), where one of them is relatively light (10 GeV). We find no evidence for these decays and we obtain limits on the ZHs0Hp0 coupling as a function of the Higgs-boson masses. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We describe a search for the decay of the Z boson into pairs of doubly charged Higgs bosons with the Mark II detector operating at the SLAC Linear Collider. Each Higgs boson is assumed to decay into a same-sign leptonic pair. No event candidates are found in a sample of 528 Z decays. At the 95% confidence level, this result excludes the region of leptonic coupling gll3×10-7 and Higgs-boson mass 6.5MH 36.5 GeV/c2 for isotriplet (left-handed) Higgs bosons. Isosinglet (right-handed) Higgs bosons are excluded in the same gll interval and in the mass interval 7.3 MH 34.3 GeV/c2. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Using the sample of neutral vector bosons (Z's) produced at the SLAC Linear Collider and detected with the Mark II detector, we search for the decay of the Z to a pair of particles, one of which decays to two charged particles. The observed number of Z decays with this signature excludes, at a confidence level greater than 95%, the decay of the Z to a pair of fourth-generation Dirac neutrinos with mass between 2.5 and 22 GeV, a decay length less than about 1 cm, and coupling to any of the first three generations of charged leptons. This is the first time the existence of such a lepton coupling to the ± has been excluded by a direct search. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have measured inclusive distributions for charged particles in hadronic decays of the Z boson. The variables chosen for study were charged-particle multiplicity, scaled momentum, and momenta transverse to the sphericity axes. The distributions have been corrected for detector effects and are compared with data from ee- annihilation at lower energies and with the predictions of several QCD-based models. The data are in reasonable agreement with expectations. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We search for events in the Mark II detector at SLAC Linear Collider with the topology of a Z boson decaying into a pair of long-lived massive particles. No events that are consistent with the search hypothesis are found. Interpreting the long-lived particle as a sequential Dirac neutrino 4 of the fourth generation, we exclude at the 95% confidence level a significant range of mixing-matrix elements of 4 to other-generation neutrinos for a 4 mass from 10 to 43 GeV/c2. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Introduction Neurofilament light (NfL), chitinase-3-like protein 1 (YKL-40), and neurogranin (Ng) are biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) to monitor axonal damage, astroglial activation, and synaptic degeneration, respectively. Methods We performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using DNA and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from the EMIF-AD Multimodal Biomarker Discovery study for discovery, and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative study for validation analyses. GWAS were performed for all three CSF biomarkers using linear regression models adjusting for relevant covariates. Results We identify novel genome-wide significant associations between DNA variants in TMEM106B and CSF levels of NfL, and between CPOX and YKL-40. We confirm previous work suggesting that YKL-40 levels are associated with DNA variants in CHI3L1. Discussion Our study provides important new insights into the genetic architecture underlying interindividual variation in three AD-related CSF biomarkers. In particular, our data shed light on the sequence of events regarding the initiation and progression of neuropathological processes relevant in AD.

Abstract

Introduction: The airway microbiota has been linked to specific paediatric respiratory diseases, but studies are often small. It remains unclear whether particular bacteria are associated with a given disease, or if a more general, non-specific microbiota association with disease exists, as suggested for the gut. We investigated overarching patterns of bacterial association with acute and chronic paediatric respiratory disease in an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences from published respiratory microbiota studies. Methods: We obtained raw microbiota data from public repositories or via communication with corresponding authors. Cross-sectional analyses of the paediatric (<18 years) microbiota in acute and chronic respiratory conditions, with >10 case subjects were included. Sequence data were processed using a uniform bioinformatics pipeline, removing a potentially substantial source of variation. Microbiota differences across diagnoses were assessed using alpha- and beta-diversity approaches, machine learning, and biomarker analyses. Results: We ultimately included 20 studies containing individual data from 2624 children. Disease was associated with lower bacterial diversity in nasal and lower airway samples and higher relative abundances of specific nasal taxa including Streptococcus and Haemophilus. Machine learning success in assigning samples to diagnostic groupings varied with anatomical site, with positive predictive value and sensitivity ranging from 43 to 100 and 8 to 99%, respectively. Conclusion: IPD meta-analysis of the respiratory microbiota across multiple diseases allowed identification of a non-specific disease association which cannot be recognised by studying a single disease. Whilst imperfect, machine learning offers promise as a potential additional tool to aid clinical diagnosis.

25. Chemosensory device assisted-estimation of the quality of edible oils with repetitive frying

Abstract

This study investigated chemosensory degradations of soybean and canola oils with repeated frying in order to estimate the quality of the oils. Methods: Chemical parameters including oxygen induction time, acid value, p-anisidine value, malondialdehyde, and total polar compounds were measured. Electronic nose and electronic tongue analyses were performed to assess sensory properties. Multivariate analyses were employed to investigate relationships among tastes and volatile compounds using principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson’s correlation analysis. Results: All chemical parameters increased with repeated frying in both oils. Electronic nose analysis found ethyl butyrate, 2-heptenal, and 2,4-pentanedione as major volatiles for soybean oil and ethyl butyrate and linalool for canola oil. As the numbers of frying increased, all volatiles showed an increased concentration in various extents. In multivariate analyses, ethyl butyrate revealed strong positive correlations with sourness, umami, and sweetness, and umami showed strong positive correlations with sourness and saltiness (p < 0.05). PCA confirmed that in PC1 with 49% variance, sourness, saltiness, and umami were at similar rates while acetyl pyrazine, 2,4-pentadieone, and 1-octanol were found at similar rates. Canola oil was chemically more stable and less susceptible to deterioration in all chemical parameters compared to soybean oil, resulting in a relatively better quality oil when repeatedly fried. Conclusion: The results suggested that minimum repeated frying (5 times) degrades chemosensory characteristics of both oils, thereby compromising their quality. The findings of this study will be utilized as a foundation for quality control of fried foods in food industry, fried food development, and fast-food industry.

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia in the elderly. Susceptibility to AD is considerably determined by genetic factors which hitherto were primarily identified using case-control designs. Elucidating the genetic architecture of additional AD-related phenotypic traits, ideally those linked to the underlying disease process, holds great promise in gaining deeper insights into the genetic basis of AD and in developing better clinical prediction models. To this end, we generated genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping data in 931 participants of the European Medical Information Framework Alzheimer's Disease Multimodal Biomarker Discovery (EMIF-AD MBD) sample to search for novel genetic determinants of AD biomarker variability. Specifically, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses on 16 traits, including 14 measures derived from quantifications of five separate amyloid-beta (A beta) and tau-protein species in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In addition to confirming the well-established effects of apolipoprotein E (APOE) on diagnostic outcome and phenotypes related to A beta 42, we detected novel potential signals in the zinc finger homeobox 3 (ZFHX3) for CSF-A beta 38 and CSF-A beta 40 levels, and confirmed the previously described sex-specific association between SNPs in geminin coiled-coil domain containing (GMNC) and CSF-tau. Utilizing the results from independent case-control AD GWAS to construct polygenic risk scores (PRS) revealed that AD risk variants only explain a small fraction of CSF biomarker variability. In conclusion, our study represents a detailed first account of GWAS analyses on CSF-A beta and -tau-related traits in the EMIF-AD MBD dataset. In subsequent work, we will utilize the genomics data generated here in GWAS of other AD-relevant clinical outcomes ascertained in this unique dataset.

Abstract

This study investigated nutritional, physicochemical, and sensory characteristics of coffee brewed with conventional and high-oleic peanut extracts. Compared to normal coffee, peanut coffee exhibited more diverse amino acids compositions. In constituent amino acids composition, peanut coffee exhibited increased proportions of glutamic and aspartic acids but decreased phenylalanine. Peanut coffee had higher thiamin, niacin, and sugar contents, improved antioxidant capacity, and lower caffeine contents. In electronic tongue analysis, peanut coffee showed an increased intensity of sweetness and umami taste but decreased bitterness, corresponding to the result of amino acids compositions and caffeine and sugar contents. In volatile compounds analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with the sniffing test, peanut coffee had high concentrations of 2-ethyl-3,6-dimethylpyrazine, 2,2′-methylenebis-furan, and furfuryl propionate, which were perceived as peanut and roasted odors in the sniffing test. This study will provide informative data in extending the application of peanut to coffee and developing novel coffee, with added peanut, that is nutritionally beneficial.

We have observed hadronic final states produced in the decays of Z bosons. In order to study the parton structure of these events, we compare the distributions in sphericity, thurst, aplanarity, and number of jets to the predictions of several QCD-based models and to data from lower energies. Abstract

The Mark II detector has been upgraded in preparation for its role as the first detector to take data at the Stanford Linear Collider. The new detector components include the central drift chamber, the time-of-flight system, the coil, the endcap electromagnetic calorimeters and the beam energy and luminosity measuring devices. There have also been improvements in detector hermeticity. All of the major components were installed for a test run at the PEP storage ring (√s = 29 GeV) in 1985. This paper describes the upgraded detector, including its trigger and data acquisition systems, and gives performance figures for its components. Future improvements are also discussed. © 1989.

Abstract

We have measured the mass of the Z boson to be 91.14±0.12 GeV/c2, and its width to be 2.42-0.35+0.45 GeV. If we constrain the visible width to its standard-model value, we find the partial width to invisible decay modes to be 0.46±0.10 GeV, corresponding to 2.8±0.6 neutrino species, with a 95%-confidence-level upper limit of 3.9. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have searched for events with new-particle topologies in 390 hadronic Z decays with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We place 95%-confidence-level lower limits of 40.7 GeV/c2 for the top-quark mass, 42.0 GeV/c2 for the mass of a fourth-generation charge -(1/3 quark, and 41.3 GeV/c2 for the mass of an unstable Dirac neutral lepton. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present measurements by the Mark II experiment of the ratios of the leptonic partial widths of the Z boson to the hadronic partial width. The results are ee/had=0.037-0.012+0.016, &=0.053-0.0150.020, and /had=0.066-0.017+0.021, in good agreement with the standard-model prediction of 0.048. From the average leptonic width result, ll/had=0.053-0.009+0.010, we derive had=1.56-0.24+0.28 GeV. We find for the vector coupling constants of the tau and muon v2=0.310.31-0.30+0.43 and v2=0.050.30-0.23+0.34. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

40. Initial measurements of Z-boson resonance parameters in e+e- annihilation

Abstract

We have measured the mass of the Z boson to be 91.110.23 GeV/c2, and its width to be 1.61-0.43+0.60 GeV. If we constrain the visible width to its standard-model value, we find the partial width to invisible decay modes to be 0.620.23 GeV, corresponding to 3.81.4 neutrino species. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

42. Perilla frutescens britton: A comprehensive study on flavor/taste and chemical properties during the roasting process

Abstract

This study investigated changes of volatile compounds, sniffing test-assisted sensory properties, taste associated-constituent and free amino acid compositions, taste description by electronic-tongue, and chemical characteristics in Perilla frutescens Britton var. acuta Kudo after roasting at 150 °C for 0 8 min. A total of 142 volatile compounds were identified, among which methyl benzoate and limonene were predominant, regardless of roasting time, and these were also detected as the major compounds in the sniffing test by GC-olfactometry. For constituent amino acids analyzed by the acid hydrolysis method using hydrochloric acid (HCl), the concentration of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and leucine showed an increase pattern with increased roasting time, which results in umami taste, sour taste, and bitter taste, respectively. For free amino acids, valine and hydroxylysine eliciting bitter and bitter and sweet tastes, respectively, also tend to increase by roasting. The pattern of amino acid concentration by roasting was readily matched to the taste description by electronic-tongue but that of sweetness and sourness by electronic-tongue did not coincide with the amino acid composition. For the chemical properties, total phenolic content, antioxidative capacity, and browning intensity tend to increase with roasting but decreased by 8 min. The results of this study provide fundamental information on perilla in both the food industry and cooking environment for the sake of increasing the utilization of perilla as a food source and ingredient.

Abstract

Obesity is a chronic inflammatory state and adipose tissue serves as a source of inflammatory mediators. This study compared plasma levels of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in 20 morbidly obese patients (group O) undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and in 20 non-obese control patients (group C) undergoing laparascopic gastrectomy. Blood was sampled preoperatively and at 3 and 24 h postoperatively. Postoperative IL-6 levels increased significantly in both groups, but were significantly lower in group O than in group C. Age- and anaesthetic time-adjusted IL-6 levels showed a significant increase at 24 h postoperatively compared with preoperative values in both groups; changes were significantly greater in group C. TNF-α levels did not change significantly over time, but were significantly lower in group O at 3 h postoperatively compared with group C. In conclusion, postoperative changes in IL-6 and TNF-α levels in morbidly obese patients were lower than in non-obese patients. Adipose tissue appears not to contribute to the acute postoperative inflammatory response.
