Abstract Background In the information age of health care, nurses often face information overload, leading to negative emotions, e.g., anxiety that may impede the adoption of evidence-based practice and clinical decision-making process. Nurses with higher digital health literacy can effectively process and manage information. Despite this, no research has explored the relationship between information anxiety, digital health literacy, and core competency among nurses. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the mediating effects of digital health literacy on information anxiety and core competency among nurses. Methods From July to October 2023, the data for this cross-sectional study were collected. The study surveyed a total of 608 nurses from three tertiary hospitals in Fujian Province, and the survey instruments included a sociodemographic information questionnaire, Chinese revision version of the Digital Health Literacy Instrument (CR-DHLI), Information Anxiety Scale (IAS), and Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses (CIRN). Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS 29.0, and the mediating effect of digital health literacy was examined using Mplus. Results The mean score of nurses’ information anxiety, digital health literacy, and core competency was 3.03 ± 0.91, 2.46 ± 0.56, 2.72 ± 0.88, respectively. And the mediation model of information anxiety on core competency for nurses showed a good model fit index (χ²/df = 2.207, CFI = 0.985, TLI = 0.982, RMSEA = 0.045, SRMR = 0.035). Digital health literacy was positively correlated with nurses’ core competency but negatively correlated with information anxiety. The results of path analysis revealed that information anxiety had negative and significant direct effects on NCC (β = -0.119, P = 0.004) and DHL (β = -0.297, P < 0.001). DHL had a positive effect on NCC (β = 0.306, P < 0.001). Digital health literacy played a partial mediating role, accounting for 43.54% of the relationship between information anxiety and nurses’ core competency. Conclusions Information anxiety among nurses was at relatively high levels, which had a negative impact on the core competency of nurses. This issue requires attention from nursing managers. The mediating role of digital health literacy in the relationship between information anxiety and core competency among nurses has been established. Nursing managers should strengthen the evaluation of nurses’ DHL and devise effective support strategies to enhance DHL, thus improving the core competence of nurses in information age.

Abstract Cytokine storm (CS) emerges as an exacerbated inflammatory response triggered by various factors such as pathogens and excessive immunotherapy, posing a significant threat to life if left unchecked. Quercetin, a monomer found in traditional Chinese medicine, exhibits notable anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. This study endeavors to explore whether quercetin intervention could mitigate CS through a combination of network pharmacology analysis and experimental validation. First, common target genes and potential mechanisms affected by quercetin and CS were identified through network pharmacology, and molecular docking experiments confirmed quercetin and core targets. Subsequently, in vitro experiments of Raw264.7 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed that quercetin could effectively inhibit the overexpression of pro-inflammatory mediators and regulate the AKT1-FoxO1 signaling pathway. At the same time, quercetin can reduce ROS through the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway. In addition, in vivo studies of C57BL/6 mice injected with LPS further confirmed quercetin's inhibitory effect on CS. In conclusion, this investigation elucidated novel target genes and signaling pathways implicated in the therapeutic effects of quercetin on CS. Moreover, it provided compelling evidence supporting the efficacy of quercetin in reversing LPS-induced CS, primarily through the regulation of the AKT1-FoxO1 and Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathways.

Abstract In this multicenter, non-inferiority, randomized trial, we randomly assigned 992 women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with a good prognosis (aged 20-40, ≥3 transferrable cleavage-stage embryos) to strategies of blastocyst-stage (n = 497) or cleavage-stage (n = 495) single embryo transfer. Primary outcome was cumulative live-birth rate after up to three transfers. Secondary outcomes were cumulative live-births after all embryo transfers within 1 year of randomization, pregnancy outcomes, obstetric-perinatal complications, and livebirths outcomes. Live-birth rates were 74.8% in blastocyst-stage group versus 66.3% in cleavage-stage group (relative risk 1.13, 95%CI:1.04-1.22; Pnon-inferiority 3 days. Among good prognosis women, a strategy of single blastocyst transfer increases cumulative live-birth rates over single cleavage-stage transfer. Blastocyst transfer resulted in higher preterm birth rates. This information should be used to counsel patients on their choice between cleavage-stage and blastocyst-stage transfer (NCT03152643, https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT03152643 ).

AIM: To describe the practice patterns of intravitreal injections (IVIs) among ophthalmologists in China. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional online survey. Ophthalmologists who had performed accumulated more than 100 injections were contacted by the Brightness Center, a hospital-based national network, to complete an anonymous, 24-question, internet-based survey. They were surveyed on practices in injection techniques, pre-, and post-injections procedures. RESULTS: A total of 333 ophthalmologists from 28 provinces/municipalities/autonomous regions responded to the survey (50.68% response rate). The 91.29% of the respondents evaluated systemic risk factors by medical history, electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood test. All the respondents used pre-injection prophylactic antibiotics. Most checked intraocular pressure (IOP, 99.1%) and blood pressure (96.1%) before injections. A majority of the respondents performed injections in the operating room (98.8%), wore masks (99.7%), gloves (99.4%) and sterile surgical clothing (96.1%), performed topical anesthetics (97.9%), and applied povidone-iodine (95.8%) pre-injection. The 61.26% of the respondents dilated pupil. About half of the respondents (51.05%) performed bilateral injections in the same setting. Superior temporal quadrant (40.54%) was the most frequent site of injection. Around three quarters used 30-gauge needles. Most respondents (97.9%) measured the site of injection from limbus. More than half (53.45%) performed conjunctiva displacement prior to injection. The 32.43% of the respondents checked IOP post-injection and 87.99% physicians checked hand motion (HM) or counting fingers (CF) after injection, while 36.94% observed optic nerve perfusion. All participants used topical antibiotics post-injections. Most physicians (91.89%) reviewed patients on the following day. CONCLUSION: This study provides a description of the real-world practice patterns in IVIs in China and offers critical information regarding education and training of ophthalmologists and amendment of local society guidelines.

The Yangtze River is the mother river of China. To promote the aquatic ecosystem protection of the great river, the Project of Yangtze Fisheries Resources and Environment Investigation (2017–2021) supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, P. R. China carried out by 24 institutes and universities that located in the Yangtze River basin surveys the status of (1) fish species composition and spatial distribution, (2) current fish abundance, (3) endangered fishes, (4) Yangtze finless porpoise, (5) aquatic eco-environments, (6) water-level fluctuation areas, (7) capture fisheries and recreational fisheries of the Yangtze River mainstream and 10 of its main tributaries, including Yalong River, Heng River, Min River (including Dadu River), Chishui River, Tuo River, Jialing River, Wu River, Han River, Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake. The results showed that there were 443 fish species (belonging to 163 genus, 37 families, and 18 orders) before 2017, but only 323 fish species (including 15 new recorded exotic species) were recorded in the project of 2017–2021. Among them, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, Coilia brachygnathus, Silurus asotus, Saurogobio dabryi, Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Pelteobagrus nitidus, Hemiculter leucisculus, Siniperca chuatsi, Coreius heterodon, Culter alburnus, Parabramis pekinensis, and Aristichthys nobilis were the dominant species across the whole Yangtze River system. It is estimated that there were 886 million individuals weighing 124.8 million kg, merely equivalent to 27.3% of the resources in 1950s, 30.9% of the resources in 1960s, or 58.7% of the resources in 1980s. In the new list of protected fishes that recorded in the Yangtze River system, only 15 of 29 were collected in this project of 2017–2021. Psephurus gladius has been affirmed to be Extinct by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The wild individuals of Tenualosa reevesii and Luciobrama macrocephalus have disappeared for many years and maybe have been extinct already. Acipenser dabryanus has been affirmed to be Extinct in the Wild by IUCN. The natural propagations of A. sinensis, Myxocyprinus asiaticus and Trachidermus fasciatus have been interrupted for many years. The populations of Yangtze finless porpoise in the Yangtze River mainstream, Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake have steadily rising sizes and expanding distributions in 2017–2021. Parts of them migrate from one region to another with the seasons, which would result in the fluctuation of Yangtze finless porpoise population within some regions. The conventional indicators of water quality in the Yangtze River system were good and conformed to the water quality criteria of fishery in 2017–2021. In the last 40 years, the maximum surface water area in the Yangtze River basin extended to approximately 63,360 km2, the minimum surface water area covered approximately 26,396 km2, and the seasonal water-level fluctuation areas occupied approximately 36,964 km2. Compared with 1984–2000 period, the 2001–2020 period witnessed an overall decreasing trend in the frequency of surface water occurrence within about 25,869 km2 of aquatic areas. From 1984 to 2000 period to 2001–2020 period, permanent surface water has decreased by nearly 8,750 km2. In 2017, the fishermen were mainly 40–60 years old and their educational levels were mainly lower than junior high school. In 2017, most anglers were older than 40 and used hand rod and/or sea rod. Their average catch of each time was mainly less than 1 kg. Results suggested that the fishing ban in key waters of the Yangtze River basin is not only an ecological project of aquatic ecosystem conservation, but also a livelihood project for the fisherman to embrace industrial transformation and improve their living conditions. After the implementation of the fishing ban, the fisheries resources would gradually recover, and the Yangtze finless porpoise population size would also see a steady increase. However, the endangered species would remain threatened for a long time. The degraded waterbodies and water-level fluctuation areas would be the key restrictive factors for future aquatic ecosystem recovery in the Yangtze River basin. Since this survey was carried out before the fishing ban, the current results could provide a baseline for future evaluation of the effect of the Yangtze River fishing ban.

Abstract Background Academic pressure and frustration stimulation are significant stressors in college students, and response to the prolonged stimuli would cause adverse mental and physical outcomes. However, more is needed to know about the stress response and its predictors among undergraduate nursing students retaking failed course under the background of the abolition of the Final Supplementary Examination in China. This study aimed to investigate the stress response and its predictive factors of nursing student repeaters who are retaking at least one failed course. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, utilizing convenience sampling to recruit 120 nursing student repeaters from four 4-year undergraduate medical universities in China between September 2020 and May 2021. Data collection instruments included a general information questionnaire, a stress response questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson resilience scale, a self-control scale, and a academic self-efficacy questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple linear regression. Results The average scores of the total stress response, emotional response, physical response, and behavioral response were 58.07 ± 26.72, 86.97 ± 17.12, 57.69 ± 9.75, 67.16 ± 9.22, respectively. Stress response was predicted by psychological resilience, self-control ability, academic self-efficacy and the number of retaking courses. Conclusions The stress response among nursing student repeaters is relatively active. Higher psychological resilience, self-control ability, and academic self-efficacy predict lower levels of stress response. In order to help nursing students with failing and repeating course release their psychological stress and maintain well-being, nursing educators could adopt self-control promotion strategies and emphasize the cultivation of psychological resilience and academic self-efficacy as parts of health promotion programs for this particular student group.

Abstract Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human brain, has long been considered essential in human behavior in general and learning in particular. GABA concentration can be quantified using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Using this technique, numerous studies have reported associations between baseline GABA levels and various human behaviors. However, regional GABA concentration is not fixed and may exhibit rapid modulation as a function of environmental factors. Hence, quantification of GABA levels at several time points during the performance of tasks can provide insights into the dynamics of GABA levels in distinct brain regions. This review reports on findings from studies using repeated measures (n = 41) examining the dynamic modulation of GABA levels in humans in response to various interventions in the perceptual, motor, and cognitive domains to explore associations between GABA modulation and human behavior. GABA levels in a specific brain area may increase or decrease during task performance or as a function of learning, depending on its precise involvement in the process under investigation. Here, we summarize the available evidence and derive two overarching hypotheses regarding the role of GABA modulation in performance and learning. Firstly, training-induced increases in GABA levels appear to be associated with an improved ability to differentiate minor perceptual differences during perceptual learning. This observation gives rise to the ‘GABA increase for better neural distinctiveness hypothesis’. Secondly, converging evidence suggests that reducing GABA levels may play a beneficial role in effectively filtering perceptual noise, enhancing motor learning, and improving performance in visuomotor tasks. Additionally, some studies suggest that the reduction of GABA levels is related to better working memory and successful reinforcement learning. These observations inspire the ‘GABA decrease to boost learning hypothesis’, which states that decreasing neural inhibition through a reduction of GABA in dedicated brain areas facilitates human learning. Additionally, modulation of GABA levels is also observed after short-term physical exercise. Future work should elucidate which specific circumstances induce robust GABA modulation to enhance neuroplasticity and boost performance.

Abstract Background Delirium, marked by acute cognitive decline, poses a life-threatening issue among older individuals, especially after cardiac surgery, with prevalence ranging from 15 to 80%. Postoperative delirium is linked to increased morbidity and mortality. Although clinical trials suggest preventability, there is limited research on intranasal insulin (INI) for cardiac surgery-related delirium. INI has shown promise in managing cognitive disorders. It rapidly elevates brain hormone levels, enhancing memory even in non-impaired individuals. While effective in preventing delirium in gastrointestinal surgery, its impact after cardiac surgery remains understudied, especially for middle-aged patients. Method This is a prospective randomized, double-blind, single-center controlled trial. A total of 76 eligible participants scheduled for elective on-pump cardiac surgery will be enrolled and randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either receive Intranasally administered insulin (INI) or intranasally administered normal saline. The primary outcome of our study is the incidence of postoperative delirium (POD). Secondary outcomes include duration of ICU, postoperative hospital length of stay, all in-hospital mortality, the change in MMSE scores pre- and post-operation, and incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after operation. Moreover, we will subjectively and objectively evaluate perioperative sleep quality to investigate the potential impact of nasal insulin on the development of delirium by influencing sleep regulation. Discussion Our study will aim to assess the impact of intranasal administration of insulin on the incidence of postoperative delirium in middle-aged patients undergoing on-pump elective cardiac surgery. If intranasal insulin proves to be more effective, it may be considered as a viable alternative for preventing postoperative delirium. Trial registration ChiCTR ChiCTR2400081444. Semiaquilegia danxiashanensis is currently known only from the type locality, Danxia Mountain, characterized by its spectacular red sandstone cliffscape. In this study, we assembled the complete chloroplast genome sequence of S. danxiashanensis and inferred its phylogenetic relationships. Total length of the chloroplast genome was 160,548 bp, with an overall GC content of 39%. The chloroplast genome had typical quadripartite structure and contained one LSC region (89,882 bp) and one SSC region (17,386 bp), which were separated by two IRs regions (26,640 bp, respectively). It comprised 133 genes, including 84 protein coding genes, 41 tRNA genes and eight rRNA genes. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis indicated that S. danxiashanensis was sister to S. adoxoides; meanwhile, Semiaquilegia was closely related to both Urophysa and Aquilegia in Ranunculaceae. This study sheds light on the evolutionary history of Semiaquilegia and provides preliminary data for future comparative analysis of chloroplast genomes.

Abstract TGF-β1 activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), transcriptional activator 3 (Stat3) activation and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), metabolite of intestinal bacteria, is closely associated with hepatic fibrosis. Previous studies have shown that Lactucin has significant anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects; however, the mechanism of Lactucin's role in liver fibrosis associated with SCFAs remains unknown. This study was intended to investigate whether effect of Lactucin on liver fibrosis was mediated by TGF-β1/Stat3 and SCFAs. We found that Lactucin induced apoptosis in HSC-T6 cells, and inhibition of nuclear translocation of Stat3 and p-Stat3. And Smad3 and TGF-β1 protein expression was significantly inhibited, while TLR4 and Smad7 protein expression was significantly enhanced. For in vivo experiments, we demonstrated that Lactucin alleviated liver fibrosis in mice, as evidenced by a reduction in inflammatory factors, collagen deposition, liver injury and fibrosis-related factors expression, especially the expression of Smad3 and TGF-β1 proteins was significantly suppressed and Smad7 protein expression was significantly increased in the liver. In addition, the levels of acetic acid, butyric acid and valeric acid in the intestine of Lactucin-treated mice were significantly higher than those in the intestine of liver fibrosis mice. In conclusion, based on the results of in vivo and in vitro experiments, preventive mechanism of Lactucin against liver fibrosis in mice may be to improve the enterohepatic circulation by regulating the metabolites of intestinal microorganisms, acetic acid and butyric acid, and to further regulate the Stat3 and TGF-β1 signaling pathway through the "gut-liver axis" to combat liver fibrosis.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the prognostic utility of Activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) expression in Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) inpatients with Non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) undergoing Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT). A prospective cohort of 74 bladder cancer patients and 22 non-cancer controls were enrolled. The expression of ADNP mRNA was detected by immunomagnetic beads-droplet digital PCR. The ADNP mRNA expression was evaluated in patients with high-risk NMIBC and those with indeterminate invasion depth post 2nd TURBT. Primary cultured bladder cancer cells and PBMCs from healthy donors were immunofluorescence stained. Our findings suggest that baseline ADNP mRNA level in CTCs shows potential as a prognostic marker for NMIBC with a sensitivity of 83.33% and a specificity of 73.58%. In comparison to baseline, ADNP mRNA expression increased post 2nd TURBT in 5 patients, where 2 experienced recurrence. Meanwhile, among the 12 patients with decreased levels, only one patient relapsed. A considerable limitation of this study entails the small sample size. The Immuno-magnetic beads-ddPCR technique provided a viable method for ADNP mRNA detection in CTCs from bladder cancer patients. The preoperative ADNP mRNA level in CTCs was identified as a prognostic indicator for NMIBC. Longitudinal monitoring of ADNP mRNA in CTCs of bladder cancer patients shows promise in evaluating treatment responses and predicting prognosis.

Abstract Ischemic stroke poses significant challenges in terms of mortality and disability rates globally. A key obstacle to the successful treatment of ischemic stroke lies in the limited efficacy of administering therapeutic agents. Leveraging the unique properties of nanoparticles for brain targeting and crossing the blood–brain barrier, researchers have engineered diverse nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems to improve the therapeutic outcomes of ischemic stroke. This review provides a concise overview of the pathophysiological mechanisms implicated in ischemic stroke, encompassing oxidative stress, glutamate excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, and cell death, to elucidate potential targets for nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems. Furthermore, the review outlines the classification of nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems according to these distinct physiological processes. This categorization aids in identifying the attributes and commonalities of nanoparticles that target specific pathophysiological pathways in ischemic stroke, thereby facilitating the advancement of nanomedicine development. The review discusses the potential benefits and existing challenges associated with employing nanoparticles in the treatment of ischemic stroke, offering new perspectives on designing efficacious nanoparticles to enhance ischemic stroke treatment outcomes. Abstract Egg-laying performance is of great economic importance in poultry, but the underlying genetic mechanisms are still elusive. In this work, we conduct a multi-omics and multi-tissue integrative study in hens with distinct egg production, to detect the hub candidate genes and construct hub molecular networks contributing to egg-laying phenotypic differences. We identifiy three hub candidate genes as egg-laying facilitators: TFPI2, which promotes the GnRH secretion in hypothalamic neuron cells; CAMK2D, which promotes the FSHβ and LHβ secretion in pituitary cells; and OSTN, which promotes granulosa cell proliferation and the synthesis of sex steroid hormones. We reveal key endocrine factors involving egg production by inter-tissue crosstalk analysis, and demonstrate that both a hepatokine, APOA4, and an adipokine, ANGPTL2, could increase egg production by inter-tissue communication with hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Together, These results reveal the molecular mechanisms of multi-tissue coordinative regulation of chicken egg-laying performance and provide key insights to avian reproductive regulation.

Abstract Background Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are the prominent cell type in the tumor microenvironment (TME), and CAF subsets have been identified in various tumors. However, how CAFs spatially coordinate other cell populations within the liver TME to promote cancer progression remains unclear. Methods We combined multi-region proteomics (6 patients, 24 samples), 10X Genomics Visium spatial transcriptomics (11 patients, 25 samples), and multiplexed imaging (92 patients, 264 samples) technologies to decipher the expression heterogeneity, functional diversity, spatial distribution, colocalization, and interaction of fibroblasts. The newly identified CAF subpopulation was validated by cells isolated from 5 liver cancer patients and in vitro functional assays. Results We identified a liver CAF subpopulation, marked by the expression of COL1A2, COL4A1, COL4A2, CTGF, and FSTL1, and named F5-CAF. F5-CAF is preferentially located within and around tumor nests and colocalizes with cancer cells with higher stemness in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Multiplexed staining of 92 patients and the bulk transcriptome of 371 patients demonstrated that the abundance of F5-CAFs in HCC was associated with a worse prognosis. Further in vitro experiments showed that F5-CAFs isolated from liver cancer patients can promote the proliferation and stemness of HCC cells. Conclusions We identified a CAF subpopulation F5-CAF in liver cancer, which is associated with cancer stemness and unfavorable prognosis. Our results provide potential mechanisms by which the CAF subset in the TME promotes the development of liver cancer by supporting the survival of cancer stem cells.

Abstract The association between serum copper and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) lacks definitive conclusions, and the intricate interactions with in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle characteristics in infertility remain insufficiently explored. This retrospective study included 560 patients with tubal infertility (no‐PCOS) and 266 patients with PCOS undergoing IVF at the Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from January 2018 to December 2022. Patients' basic characteristics, hormonal and metabolic parameters, essential trace elements, and IVF cycle characteristics were measured and analyzed. Abstract There is no effective and noninvasive solution for thrombolysis because the mechanism by which certain thrombi become tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)-resistant remains obscure. Endovascular thrombectomy is the last option for these tPA-resistant thrombi, thus a new noninvasive strategy is urgently needed. Through an examination of thrombi retrieved from stroke patients, we found that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), ε-(γ-glutamyl) lysine isopeptide bonds and fibrin scaffolds jointly comprise the key chain in tPA resistance. A theranostic platform is designed to combine sonodynamic and mechanical thrombolysis under the guidance of ultrasonic imaging. Breakdown of the key chain leads to a recanalization rate of more than 90% in male rat tPA-resistant occlusion model. Vascular reconstruction is observed one month after recanalization, during which there was no thrombosis recurrence. The system also demonstrates noninvasive theranostic capabilities in managing pigs’ long thrombi (>8 mm) and in revascularizing thrombosis-susceptible tissue-engineered vascular grafts, indicating its potential for clinical application. Overall, this noninvasive theranostic platform provides a new strategy for treating tPA-resistant thrombi.

Abstract Hydrogen production from seawater remains challenging due to the deactivation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrode under high current density. To overcome the activity-stability trade-offs in transition-metal sulfides, we propose a strategy to engineer sulfur migration by constructing a nickel-cobalt sulfides heterostructure with nitrogen-doped carbon shell encapsulation (CN@NiCoS) electrocatalyst. State-of-the-art ex situ/in situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal the restructuring of the CN@NiCoS interface, clearly identifying dynamic sulfur migration. The NiCoS heterostructure stimulates sulfur migration by creating sulfur vacancies at the Ni3S2-Co9S8 heterointerface, while the migrated sulfur atoms are subsequently captured by the CN shell via strong C-S bond, preventing sulfide dissolution into alkaline electrolyte. Remarkably, the dynamically formed sulfur-doped CN shell and sulfur vacancies pairing sites significantly enhances HER activity by altering the d-band center near Fermi level, resulting in a low overpotential of 4.6 and 8 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline freshwater and seawater media, and long-term stability up to 1000 h. This work thus provides a guidance for the design of high-performance HER electrocatalyst by engineering interfacial atomic migration.

Abstract The molecular mechanisms by which FoxO transcription factors mediate diametrically opposite cellular responses, namely death and survival, remain unknown. Here we show that Mst1 phosphorylates FoxO1 Ser209/Ser215/Ser218/Thr228/Ser232/Ser243, thereby inhibiting FoxO1-mediated transcription of proapoptotic genes. On the other hand, Mst1 increases FoxO1-C/EBP-β interaction and activates C/EBP-β by phosphorylating it at Thr299, thereby promoting transcription of prosurvival genes. Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury is larger in cardiac-specific FoxO1 knockout mice than in control mice. However, the concurrent presence of a C/EBP-β T299E phospho-mimetic mutation reduces infarct size in cardiac-specific FoxO1 knockout mice. The C/EBP-β phospho-mimetic mutant exhibits greater binding to the promoter of prosurvival genes than wild type C/EBP-β. In conclusion, phosphorylation of FoxO1 by Mst1 inhibits binding of FoxO1 to pro-apoptotic gene promoters but enhances its binding to C/EBP-β, phosphorylation of C/EBP-β, and transcription of prosurvival genes, which stimulate protective mechanisms in the heart.

Abstract Background Compared with moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has at least a comparable effect on inhibiting an increase in fat. However, few studies have been conducted to examine the effects of detraining on body fat in rats fed a high-fat diet. The present study aimed to compare the effects of 10 weeks of HIIT or MICT as well as 6 weeks of detraining on body fat in rats fed a high-fat diet. Methods After being fed a high-fat diet for 8 weeks, 54 female rats were randomly assigned to six groups: (1) CON-10, sedentary control for 10 weeks; (2) MICT-10, 10 weeks of MICT; (3) HIIT-10, 10 weeks of HIIT; (4) CON-16, sedentary control for 16 weeks; (5) MICT-16, 10 weeks of MICT followed by 6 weeks of training cessation; and (6) HIIT-16, 10 weeks of HIIT followed by 6 weeks of training cessation. The training was performed 5 days/week. The subcutaneous adipose tissue (inguinal; SCAT), visceral adipose tissue (periuterine; VAT) and serum lipid profile were analysed after 10 or 16 weeks. Adipose tissue triglyceride lipase (ATGL) protein expression in VAT was assessed by western blotting. Results HIIT-10 and MICT-10 prevented the increase in SCAT, VAT and serum lipid levels seen in the CON group. During the 6-week detraining period, HIIT continued to prevent the increase in adipose tissue mass observed in the CON group, whereas MICT at least maintained this inhibition. The inhibition of fat mass increase was mainly the result of preventing adipocyte hypertrophy. The HIIT-10 and HIIT-16 groups showed the highest ATGL protein expression. Conclusions HIIT has a comparable effect to MICT on inhibiting fat accumulation in female rats; however, the inhibition of SCAT and VAT increase by HIIT is superior to MICT after short-term training cessation. Abstract Breast muscle growth rate and intramuscular fat (IMF) content show apparent differences between fast-growing broilers and slow-growing indigenous chickens. However, the underlying genetic basis of these phenotypic characteristics remains elusive. In this study, we investigate the dynamic alterations of three-dimensional genome architecture and chromatin accessibility in breast muscle across four key developmental stages from embryo to starter chick in Arbor Acres (AA) broilers and Yufen (YF) indigenous chickens. The limited breed-specifically up-regulated genes (Bup-DEGs) are embedded in breed-specific A compartment, while a majority of the Bup-DEGs involving myogenesis and adipogenesis are regulated by the breed-specific TAD reprogramming. Chromatin loops allow distal accessible regions to interact with myogenic genes, and those loops share an extremely low similarity between chicken with different growth rate. Moreover, AA-specific loop interactions promote the expression of 40 Bup-DEGs, such as IGF1, which contributes to myofiber hypertrophy. YF-specific loop interactions or distal accessible regions lead to increased expression of 5 Bup-DEGs, including PIGO, PEMT, DHCR7, TMEM38B, and DHDH, which contribute to IMF deposition. These results help elucidate the regulation of breast muscle growth and IMF deposition in chickens.

Abstract The study aims to explore the influence of parental over-protection on academic entitlement of nursing students, and examine the mediating roles of external locus of control and psychological entitlement. The study sampled two medical universities in Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, China. Participants were nursing students in grades one to four (N = 1003; mean age = 19.51 years; 81.95% female). Using a structural equation model, we examined the mediating effect of external locus of control and psychological entitlement on parental over-protection and academic entitlement. The results show that there was a significant correlation between all variables, and external locus of control and psychological entitlement played a serial mediating role between parental over-protection and academic entitlement. Our findings suggest that academic entitlement of nursing students can be reduced by adjusting parental rearing behaviors, reducing students’ psychological entitlement, and teaching them how to form a healthier attribution style.

Abstract Pregnane X receptor (PXR) has been reported to regulate glycolipid metabolism. The dysfunction of intestinal barrier contributes to metabolic disorders. However, the role of intestinal PXR in metabolic diseases remains largely unknown. Here, we show that activation of PXR by tributyl citrate (TBC), an intestinal-selective PXR agonist, improves high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. The metabolic benefit of intestinal PXR activation is associated with upregulation of β-1,3 galactosyltransferase 5 (B3galt5). Our results reveal that B3galt5 mainly expresses in the intestine and is a direct PXR transcriptional target. B3galt5 knockout exacerbates HFD-induced obesity, insulin resistance and inflammation. Mechanistically, B3galt5 is essential to maintain the integrity of intestinal mucus barrier. B3galt5 ablation impairs the O-glycosylation of mucin2, destabilizes the mucus layer, and increases intestinal permeability. Furthermore, B3galt5 deficiency abolishes the beneficial effect of intestinal PXR activation on metabolic disorders. Our results suggest the intestinal-selective PXR activation regulates B3galt5 expression and maintains metabolic homeostasis, making it a potential therapeutic strategy in obesity.

Abstract Background Compared to traditional thoracotomy, transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) surgery offers reduced trauma and faster recovery, fostering the adoption of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols in cardiac surgery. Despite these advancements, postoperative pain management has received insufficient attention. The potential effects of multi-mode analgesia, including ultrasound-guided serratus anterior plane block (SAPB), on postoperative pain and early quality of recovery have not been widely studied, lacking comprehensive prospective evidence. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of SAPB combined with general anesthesia on early recovery quality and analgesic efficacy in transapical TAVI patients. Methods This prospective, randomized controlled study will enroll 70 patients undergoing transapical TAVI, randomly allocated to either the SAPB group or the control group. The primary outcome, assessed using Quality of Recovery-40 (QOR-40) scale, focuses on the quality of recovery at 24 h and 48 h postoperatively. Secondary outcomes include the visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores at rest and during coughing at 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 48 h after surgery, frequency of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) utilization at 24 h and 48 h, opioid consumption at 24 h and 48 h, time and frequency of rescue analgesia and severe pain at 24 h and 48 h, incidence of nausea and vomiting at 48 h after surgery, and dosage of antiemetic drugs. Discussion The purpose of our study is to evaluate the effects of ultrasound-guided SAPB combined with general anesthesia on postoperative early quality of recovery and analgesia in transapical TAVI patients. The results obtained may provide valuable insight for the implementation of multi-mode analgesia and enhanced ERAS in this specific patient population. Abstract Background Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) presents distinct hemodynamic characteristics, yet the relationship between intraoperative hypotension and short-term adverse outcomes remains clear. Our study aims to investigate association between intraoperative hypotension and postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI), mortality and length of stay in OPCABG patients. Methods Retrospective data of 494 patients underwent OPCABG from January 2016 to July 2023 were collected. We analyzed the relationship between intraoperative various hypotension absolute values (MAP > 75, 65 65 mmHg emerges as a significant independent protective factor for AKI in OPCABG and IOH is related to length of hospital stay. Proactive intervention targeting intraoperative hypotension may provide a potential opportunity to reduce postoperative renal injury and hospital stay. Trial registration ChiCTR2400082518. This paper develops a new approach for reliability-based design (RBD) of tunnel face support pressure from a quantile value perspective. A surrogate model is constructed to calculate the collapse pressures of the random samples generated by a single run of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). The cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the collapse pressure is then obtained and the support pressure aiming at a target failure probability is chosen as the upper quantile value of the collapse pressures. The proposed approach does not require repetitive reliability analyses compared to the existing methods. Moreover, a direct relationship between the target failure probability and the required support pressure is established. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the implementation procedure. The accuracy of the reliability-based support pressures is verified by direct MCS incorporating with three-dimensional numerical simulations. Finally, the influencing factors, including the sample size of MCS, the correlation coefficient between random variables, the choice of experimental points, and the surrogate model, are investigated. This method can play a complementary role to available approaches due to its advantages of simplicity and efficiency.

Introduction To investigate the toxicity of combretastatin A4 phosphate (CA4P) hyaluronic acid (HA) gel nanoparticles (HA-CA4P-NPs) in OSCC (oral squamous cell carcinoma). Methods Toxicity was investigated using fluorescence microscopy, MTT as-say, flow cytometry, and OSCC xenograft mouse models. Results Compared with CA4P, HA-CA4P-NPs generated nearly 10 times more fluorescence in OSCC cells. Cytotoxicity assays showed that HACA4P-NPs were more toxic to SCC-4 cells but not to HNECs. Remarkable necrosis was induced in SCC-4 cells after exposure to HA-CA4P-NPs, and related proteins were upregulated. Furthermore, HA-CA4P-NPs significantly reduced the tu-mour size. Conclusions HA-CA4P-NPs improved drug release and delivery, and in-creased cytotoxicity to cancer cells.

BackgroundPer- and polyfuoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are categorized as persistent organic pollutants and commonly detected in humans, and their toxicity has attracted widespread attention. However, few studies have reported comparison of PFAS levels and potential factors between women pregnant using assisted reproduction technology (ART) and women pregnant naturally. ObjectiveTo analyze and compare serum concentrations and sociodemographic determinants of PFAS in pregnant women conceiving through ART and conceiving naturally from Shanghai. MethodsBased on the China National Birth Cohort (CNBC) in Shanghai from 2017 to 2019, 333 pregnant women conceiving through ART and 689 pregnant women conceiving naturally were recruited during the same period as study subjects. The concentrations of 32 PFAS were measured in early-pregnancy serum of all pregnant women, and four PFAS with the highest co-exposure levels in both groups were included in the subsequent analysis. Multiple linear regression models were performed to evaluate the associations of sociodemographic factors with serum PFAS concentrations in the two groups respectively. Beta coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were exponentiated to calculate the ratio of the geometric mean (GM) of PFAS concentrations after each unit change in the independent variable.ResultsPerfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), 6∶2 chlorinated polyfluoroethersulfonic acid (6∶2 Cl-PFESA), and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) were four major PFAS in serum of pregnant women conceiving through ART and conceiving naturally, and the concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, and 6∶2 Cl-PFESA were higher in pregnant women conceiving through ART than in pregnant women conceiving naturally (P 300000 CNY had lower serum concentrations of PFOA [GM ratio (95%CI): 0.82 (0.72, 0.95) and 0.89 (0.81, 0.97), respectively] and PFHxS [GM ratio (95%CI): 0.66 (0.51, 0.86) and 0.77 (0.66, 0.90), respectively] than those women whose household annual income

Abstract Objective To compare the impact of telerehabilitation versus conventional rehabilitation on the recovery outcomes of patients with chronic respiratory disease (CRD). Methods The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Web of Science and Embase were searched to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on telerehabilitation for the rehabilitation of patients with chronic respiratory system diseases since the establishment of the database to November 14, 2023. Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted valid data according to the inclusion criteria. The quality assessment of included studies was conducted individually by using the RoB 2(Risk of Bias 2) tool, followed by meta-analysis using RevMan5.3 software. Results Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 RCTs were included, comprising 3030 participants, with 1509 in the telerehabilitation group and 1521 in the conventional rehabilitation group. Meta-analysis results indicated that compared to conventional rehabilitation, video conference-based telerehabilitation demonstrated significant improvements in short-term (≤ 6 months) outcomes, including 6-min walk distance (6MWD) (MD = 7.52, 95% CI: 2.09, 12.94), modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRC) (MD = -0.29, 95% CI: -0.41, -0.18), COPD assessment test (CAT) (MD = -1.77, 95% CI: -3.52, -0.02), HADS (MD = -0.44, 95% CI: -0.86, -0.03), and St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ’s) activity, impact, and symptom scores. In the long term (> 6 months), although improvements persisted in 6WMD [MD = 12.89, 95% CI (-0.37, 26.14)], mMRC [MD = -0.38, 95% CI (-0.56, -0.21)], CAT [MD = -1.39, 95% CI (-3.83, 1.05)], Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) [MD = -0.34, 95% CI (-0.66, -0.03)], and SGRQ’s Activity, Impact, and Symptom scores between intervention and control groups, statistically significant differences were observed only for mMRC and HADS. Without considering time factors, the intervention group exhibited some improvement in FEV1% predicted and the forced expiratory volume in the first one second (FEV1)/ forced vital capacity (FVC) (%) without statistical significance compared to the control group. Conclusion Telerehabilitation therapy demonstrates short-term benefits in enhancing patients’ daily activity capacity, improving respiratory function, and enhancing mental health status, thereby improving patients’ quality of life. However, further high-quality, large-sample RCTs are required to ascertain its long-term effectiveness conclusively. Abstract Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing technology with high practical value. In order to improve the quality of the fabricated parts, process monitoring has become a crucial solution, offering the potential to ensure manufacturing stability and repeatability. However, a cardinal challenge involves discerning a precise correlation between process characteristics and potential defects. This paper elucidates the integration of an off-axis vision monitoring mechanism via a high-speed camera focused on capturing the single-track melting phenomenon. An innovative image processing method was devised to segment the plume and spatters, while Kalman filter was employed for multi-object tracking of the spatters. The features of both the plume and spatters were extracted, and their relationship with molten states was investigated. Finally, the PSO-XGBoost algorithm was utilized to identify five molten states, achieving an accuracy of 92.16%. The novelty of this approach resides in its unique combination of plume characteristics, spatter features, and computationally efficient machine learning models, which collectively address the challenge of limited field of view prevalent in real production scenarios, thereby enhancing process monitoring efficacy. Relative to existing methodologies, the proposed PSO-XGBoost approach offers heightened accuracy, convenience, and appropriateness for the monitoring of the LPBF process. This work provides an effective and novel approach to monitor the LPBF process and evaluate the part fabrication quality for complex and changeable working conditions.

Abstract Shuttling of lithium polysulfides and slow redox kinetics seriously limit the rate and cycling performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this study, Fe3O4-dopped carbon cubosomes with a plumber’s nightmare structure (SP-Fe3O4-C) are prepared as sulfur hosts to construct cathodes with high rate capability and long cycling life for Li-S batteries. Their three-dimensional continuous mesochannels and carbon frameworks, along with the uniformly distributed Fe3O4 particles, enable smooth mass/electron transport, strong polysulfides capture capability, and fast catalytic conversion of the sulfur species. Impressively, the SP-Fe3O4-C cathode exhibits top-level comprehensive performance, with high specific capacity (1303.4 mAh g− 1 at 0.2 C), high rate capability (691.8 mAh gFe3O4 1 at 5 C), and long cycling life (over 1200 cycles). This study demonstrates a unique structure for high-performance Li-S batteries and opens a distinctive avenue for developing multifunctional electrode materials for next-generation energy storage devices.

Abstract Background Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma (AFS) is a rare malignant odontogenic tumor, commonly occurring in young adults and typically affecting the mandibular region. We report an exceptionally rare and highly atypical case of AFS in an elderly female patient originating from the maxillary bone. Case presentation A 66-year-old woman was admitted with a two-week history of a lump in her left upper molar. CT scans suggested a cyst in the maxillary bone. An incisional biopsy revealed a spindle cell neoplasm. MRI showed abnormalities in the left maxilla, indicating a possible tumorous lesion. The patient underwent a subtotal maxillectomy, wide tumor excision, intraoral epithelial flap transplantation, and dental extraction. Histology identified atypical tumor cells with visible mitotic figures. Immunohistochemistry showed negative for PCK and CD34 expression, but positive for Vimentin and SMA expression. The Ki-67 proliferation index ranged from 30 to 50%. These findings suggested a potentially malignant soft tissue tumor in the left maxilla, leaning towards a diagnosis of AFS. The patient received postoperative radiotherapy. There was no recurrence during the six-month follow-up. Conclusion Based on repeated pathological evidence, we report a rare case of an elderly female with AFS originating from the maxillary bone. Surgery and postoperative radiotherapy resulted in a favorable outcome.

The current study analyzed the chromosomal karyotype of Quasipaa spinosa David, 1875 from Hunan Province, China. The karyotype, C-banding, BrdU-banding pattern were characterized using direct preparation of bone-marrow cells and hemocyte cultures. The findings indicated that Q. spinosa was a diploid species (2n = 26) that lacked heteromorphic chromosomes and secondary constrictions. C-banding analysis revealed an abundance of positive signals in the centromere regions, while the BrdU-banding pattern showed three phases in both male and female, occurring consistently and in chronological sequence during S-phase. Notably, there was no asynchronous replication in the late phase. This study enhanced our understanding of the karyotypic structure of Q. spinosa by conventional cytogenetic techniques, thus providing essential scientific insights into the cytogenetics of Q. spinosa.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of immunocyte associated with bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpn). Methods Patients with BSI-Kpn were included from 2015 to 2022 in our hospital. Immunocyte subpopulations of enrolled BSI-Kpn patients were tested on the same day of blood culture using multicolor flow cytometry analysis. Antibiotic susceptibility test was determined by agar dilution or broth dilution method. All included isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing and comparative genomics analysis. Clinical and genetic data were integrated to investigate the risk factors associated with clinical outcome. Results There were 173 patients with non-duplicate BSI-Kpn, including 81 carbapenem-resistant Kpn (CRKP), 30 extended-spectrum β-lactamases producing Kpn (ESBL-Kpn), 62 none CRKP or ESBL-Kpn (S-Kpn). Among 68 ST11-CRKP isolates, ST11-O2v1:KL64 was the most common serotypes cluster (77.9%, 53/68), followed by ST11-OL101: KL47 (13.2%, 9/68). Abstract Background We aimed to explore the association and potential causality between polyunsaturated fatty acids concentrations and the risk of periodontal disease. Materials and methods Data were collected from the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Weighted logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were used to analyse the associations of the concentrations of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio with the risk of periodontitis. E-value and propensity score matching (PSM) analyses were used for sensitivity analyses. In addition, two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses were performed to assess the potential causal impact of the concentrations of those fatty acids on periodontitis risk. Results A total of 2462 participants from the NHANES were included. Logistic regression analysis revealed that high omega-3 fatty acids levels were negatively associated with the risk of developing periodontitis (P 0.05). Conclusion Although omega-3 fatty acids and the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio were associated with the risk of periodontitis in cross-sectional studies, the MR results did not support a causal relationship between them. Therefore, there is no indication that an increase in the omega-3 fatty acids concentration or a decrease in the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio may be beneficial for preventing periodontitis.

In order to study the effects of different lactic acid bacteria on the quality of pickled radish, pickled radish was prepared with Leuconostoc mesenteroides AP7, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus LP10 and AP7-LP10 combination. The changes in physicochemical indicators, color differences, texture properties and sensory indicators during the fermentation process were analyzed. In order to improve the safety and preservability of fermented vegetables, strain Leuconostoc mesenteroides AP7, with potent inhibitory effects on foodborne pathogens and bacteria causing paocai over-acidification, was selected from 8 Leuconostoc strains derived from traditional fermented vegetables in Yunnan, China. The main antimicrobial substance of AP7 was determined by eliminating the effects of organic acid and H2O2 and through protease sensitivity. The acid stability and thermal stability were analyzed and potential bacteriocin gene clusters were mined from the whole genome sequence of AP7. The results showed that the culture supernatant still had obvious antibacterial activity after excluding the influence of acid and H2O2, and after protease treatment, the antibacterial effect decreased significantly. It was speculated that the antibacterial substance in the concentrated culture supernatant was bacteriocin. The bacteriocin was sensitive to pH changes, had high thermal stability, and had a molecular weight of 6.51~14.4 kDa. Whole genome sequencing showed that the whole genome of AP7 contained 1 chromosome (1948310 bp) and 2 plasmids (37366 and 20698 bp), with a GC content of 37.7%. There was a gene cluster with Enterocin_X_chain_beta bacteriocin as the core. Its encoded product was predicted to be a positively charged hydrophilic stable protein, the secondary structure was dominated by α-helix, and the tertiary structure was mainly composed of loose peptide chains at both ends and an α-helix in the middle. In summary, the bacteriocin-producing Leuconostoc mesenteroides AP7 has excellent antibacterial properties and has the potential to be applied to the fermentation and preservation of acidic foods.

Abstract Charge, spin and Cooper-pair density waves have now been widely detected in exotic superconductors. Understanding how these density waves emerge — and become suppressed by external parameters — is a key research direction in condensed matter physics. Here we study the temperature and magnetic-field evolution of charge density waves in the rare spin-triplet superconductor candidate UTe2 using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We reveal that charge modulations composed of three different wave vectors gradually weaken in a spatially inhomogeneous manner, while persisting to surprisingly high temperatures of 10–12 K. We also reveal an unexpected decoupling of the three-component charge density wave state. Our observations match closely to the temperature scale potentially related to short-range magnetic correlations, providing a possible connection between density waves observed by surface probes and intrinsic bulk features. Importantly, charge density wave modulations become suppressed with magnetic field both below and above superconducting T c in a comparable manner. Abstract Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor that primarily inflicts the youth. It often metastasizes to the lungs after chemotherapy failure, which eventually shortens patients’ lives. Thus, there is a dire clinical need to develop a novel therapy to tackle osteosarcoma metastasis. Methionine dependence is a special metabolic characteristic of most malignant tumor cells that may offer a target pathway for such therapy. Herein, we demonstrated that methionine deficiency restricted the growth and metastasis of cultured human osteosarcoma cells. A genetically engineered Salmonella, SGN1, capable of overexpressing an L-methioninase and hydrolyzing methionine led to significant reduction of methionine and S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM) specifically in tumor tissues, drastically restricted the growth and metastasis in subcutaneous xenograft, orthotopic, and tail vein-injected metastatic models, and prolonged the survival of the model animals. SGN1 also sharply suppressed the growth of patient-derived organoid and xenograft. Methionine restriction in the osteosarcoma cells initiated severe mitochondrial dysfunction, as evident in the dysregulated gene expression of respiratory chains, increased mitochondrial ROS generation, reduced ATP production, decreased basal and maximum respiration, and damaged mitochondrial membrane potential. Transcriptomic and molecular analysis revealed the reduction of C1orf112 expression as a primary mechanism underlies methionine deprivation-initiated suppression on the growth and metastasis as well as mitochondrial functions. Collectively, our findings unraveled a molecular linkage between methionine restriction, mitochondrial function, and osteosarcoma growth and metastasis. A pharmacological agent, such as SGN1, that can achieve tumor specific deprivation of methionine may represent a promising modality against the metastasis of osteosarcoma and potentially other types of sarcomas as well.

Abstract Background Decitabine (DAC), a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor, has shown efficacy combined with chemotherapy for relapsed or refractory (R/R) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults, but less is known about its efficacy in children. Accordingly, we conducted a study which involved a priming regimen consisting of DAC with cladribine, cytarabine, and granulocyte-stimulating factor (DAC-CLAG) and compared the efficacy and safety of this regimen with CLAG alone. Methods A total of 39 R/R AML children who received the CLAG or DAC-CLAG regimen in Shanghai Children’s Hospital were retrospectively enrolled in this non-randomized study. These regimens were studied sequentially over time. Twenty-two patients received CLAG from 2015, while 17 patients were administered epigenetic priming with DAC before CLAG from 2020. Patients were subsequently bridged to stem cell transplantation (SCT) or consolidation chemotherapy. Complete remission (CR) and adverse effects were analyzed by Fisher’s exact test, and survival was analyzed by the Kaplan–Meier method. Results DAC-CLAG conferred a numerically higher CR compared to CLAG (70.59% vs 63.64%; P = 0.740). High CR rates occurred in patients with good cytogenetics (P = 0.029) and prior induction without cladribine (P = 0.099). The 1-year event-free survival (EFS) was 64.71% ± 11.59% and 63.31% ± 10.35% in the DAC-CLAG and CLAG group (P = 0.595), and 1-year overall survival (OS) was 81.45% ± 9.72% and 77.01% ± 9.04%, respectively (P = 0.265). The 1-year OS and EFS after SCT were higher in the DAC-CLAG than in the CLAG cohort (100% vs 92.31% ± 7.39%, P = 0.072; 92.31% ± 7.39% vs 85.71% ± 9.35%, P = 0.158). Abstract Objective The objective of the meta-analysis was to determine the influence of uterine fibroids on adverse outcomes, with specific emphasis on multiple or large (≥ 5 cm in diameter) fibroids. Materials and methods We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and SinoMed databases for eligible studies that investigated the influence of uterine fibroids on adverse outcomes in pregnancy. The pooled risk ratio (RR) of the variables was estimated with fixed effect or random effect models. Results Twenty-four studies with 237 509 participants were included. The pooled results showed that fibroids elevated the risk of adverse outcomes, including preterm birth, cesarean delivery, placenta previa, miscarriage, preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), fetal distress, malposition, intrauterine fetal death, low birth weight, breech presentation, and preeclampsia. However, after adjusting for the potential factors, negative effects were only seen for preterm birth, cesarean delivery, placenta previa, placental abruption, PPH, intrauterine fetal death, breech presentation, and preeclampsia. Subgroup analysis showed an association between larger fibroids and significantly elevated risks of breech presentation, PPH, and placenta previa in comparison with small fibroids. Multiple fibroids did not increase the risk of breech presentation, placental abruption, cesarean delivery, PPH, placenta previa, PPROM, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restriction. Meta-regression analyses indicated that maternal age only affected the relationship between uterine fibroids and preterm birth, and BMI influenced the relationship between uterine fibroids and intrauterine fetal death. Other potential confounding factors had no impact on malposition, fetal distress, PPROM, miscarriage, placenta previa, placental abruption, and PPH. Conclusion The presence of uterine fibroids poses increased risks of adverse pregnancy and obstetric outcomes. Fibroid size influenced the risk of breech presentation, PPH, and placenta previa, while fibroid numbers had no impact on the risk of these outcomes.

In order to explore the effects of co-fermentation of Leuconostoc mesenteroides L5 and Kazachstania exigua M1 on the physicochemical properties of low-salt and low-acid fermented mustard during fermentation process and storage period, the co-fermentation group was compared with a natural fermentation group and a fermentation group solely with the lactic acid bacterium L5. The pH, total acid, total ester and nitrite content etc. during the fermentation process and storage period were measured. The texture and color difference of fermented mature paocai and accelerated preserved paocai were analyzed alongside sensory evaluation. Abstract Electrochemical-mechanical coupling poses enormous challenges to the interfacial and structural stability but create new opportunities to design innovative all-solid-state batteries from scratch. Relying on the solid-solid constraint in the space-limited domain structure, we propose to exploit the lithiation-induced stress to drive the active materials creep, thereby improving the structural integrity. For demonstration, we fabricate the creep-type all-solid-state cathode using creepable Se material and an all-in-one rigid ionic/electronic conducting Mo6Se8 framework. As indicated by the in-situ experiment and numerical simulation, this cathode presents unique capabilities in improving interparticle contact and avoiding particle fracture, leading to its superior electrochemical performance, including a superior long-cycle life of more than 3000 cycles at 0.5 C and a high volumetric energy density of 2460 Wh/L at the cathode level. We believe this innovative strategy to utilize mechanics to boost the electrochemical performance could shed light on the future design of all-solid-state batteries for practical applications.

Electromagnetic pollution prevention and military stealth technology requirements for wave absorbing materials gradually increased, therefore, the research and development of absorbing materials with the merits of low reflection loss, wide effective absorption bandwidth, and lightweight is of great significance. In this work, Air@Co@Co7Fe3@Fe3O4 hollow spherical particles have been successfully synthesized via a simple chemical plating method combined with a post heat treatment. It reveals that the Air@Co@Co7Fe3@Fe3O4 particles with a loading of 50 wt % exhibits an optimum reflection loss (RL) value of −20.77 dB at 15.52 GHz and broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL ≤ −10 dB) of 4.56 GHz with a thickness of 1.4 mm. Compared to Air@Co hollow spherical particles, Air@Co@Co7Fe3@Fe3O4 particles with natural resonance and eddy current loss, as well as the interlayer interfacial polarization mechanism of the multilayer structure, exhibit superior electromagnetic wave(EMW) absorption capabilities. The Air@Co@Co7Fe3@Fe3O4 hollow spherical particles could be a new highly efficient absorbing material for electromagnetic waves.

Introduction Despite the existence of numerous studies highlighting the adverse effects of smoking on kidney function, the investigation of the correlation between serum cotinine and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains inconclusive due to insufficient evidence. Consequently, the primary objective of this study was to ascertain the association between serum cotinine levels and CKD. Methods This study analyzed data from 10900 Americans participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2016. The independent variable under investigation was log serum cotinine, while the dependent variable was the presence of CKD. To investigate the potential linear and non-linear correlations between serum cotinine and CKD, logistic regression models and generalized additive models (GAM) were employed. Furthermore, stratified analyses and interaction tests were conducted to evaluate potential disparities in the relationship between serum cotinine and CKD, based on sex. Results The median age in the study participants was 49.28 ± 17.96 years, and the median log serum cotinine (ng/mL) was -0.54 ± 1.68. The prevalence of CKD was found to be 17.04%. Multifactorial regression analysis did not show a statistically significant association between log serum cotinine and CKD (OR=1.02; 95% CI: 0.98–1.06, p=0.4387). A statistically significant non-linear association between log serum cotinine and CKD was also not observed in the GAM analysis (p nonlinear value=0.091). Subgroup analyses revealed sex differences in the association between log serum cotinine and CKD. Briefly, males had a positive association between log serum cotinine and incident CKD (OR=1.08; 95% CI: 1.02–1.15, p=0.0049). In females, there was a U-shaped association between log serum cotinine and CKD, with an optimal inflection point for log serum cotinine of -0.30 (serum cotinine=0.5 ng/mL). Conclusions Cross-sectional analyses of NHANES data showed gender differences in the association between serum cotinine and the development of CKD.

Abstract Background Patients with immunocompromise were suspected to encounter a high risk for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection on early period; however, data is lacking nowadays and immune response remain unclear. Methods In this retrospective study, internet questionnaire survey and medical records were acquired in pediatric hematology oncology patients. Clinical severity, immunological characteristics, and outcomes were analyzed from December 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023 at the 3rd year of pandemic in China. Results A total of 306 patients were included, with 21 patients (6.9%) asymptomatic, 262 (85.6%) mild severity, 17 (5.6%) moderate severity, 5 (1.6%) severe severity, and 1 (0.3%) critical severity. Objective: Flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) has become a widely accepted and effective technique for treating kidney stones. With the development of new laser systems, the fURS approach has evolved significantly. This literature review aims to examine the current state of knowledge on fURS treatment of kidney stones, with a particular focus on the impact of the latest laser technologies on clinical outcomes and patient safety. Methods: We conducted a search of the PubMed/PMC, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, Embase (Ovid), and Cochrane Databases for all randomized controlled trial articles on laser lithotripsy in September 2023 without time restriction. Results: We found a total of 22 relevant pieces of literature. Holmium laser has been used for intracavitary laser lithotripsy for nearly 30 years and has become the golden standard for the treatment of urinary stones. However, the existing holmium laser cannot completely powder the stone, and the retropulsion of the stone after the laser emission and the thermal damage to the tissue have caused many problems for clinicians. The introduction of thulium fiber laser and Moses technology brings highly efficient dusting lithotripsy effect through laser innovation, limiting pulse energy and broadening pulse frequency. Conclusion: While the holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser remains the primary choice for endoscopic laser lithotripsy, recent technological advancements hint at a potential new gold standard. Parameter range, retropulsion effect, laser fiber adaptability, and overall system performance demand comprehensive attention. The ablation efficacy of high-pulse-frequency devices relies on precise targeting, which may pose practical challenges.

AbstractZanthoxylum ailanthoides is a deciduous tree, with important medicinal and economic values. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Z. ailanthoides was assembled and the phylogenetic relationship to other species was inferred in this study. The chloroplast genome is 157,209 bp in length, including two inverted repeats of 26,408 bp, a large single-copy of 86,099 bp and a small single copy of 18,294 bp. Moreover, the chloroplast genome contains 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the chloroplast genome is 38.4%. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that Z. ailanthoides was grouped with a clade containing the species of Z. multijugum, Z. calcicola, Z. oxyphyllum, Z. stenophyllum, and the genus was closely related to Phellodendron. This study contributes to a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among Zanthoxylum species.

In low-resolution remote sensing images under complex lighting conditions, there is a similarity in spectral characteristics between non-landslide areas and landslide bodies, which increases the probability of misjudgment in the identification process of shallow landslide bodies. In order to further improve the accuracy of landslide identification, a shallow landslide remote sensing identification method based on an improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold is proposed for the temporary treatment project of the Yangjunba disaster site in Leshan City. Using Retinex theory, remote sensing images are enhanced with local linear models and guided filtering; then, multi-feature scales and sliding window calculations of opening and closing transformations identify potential landslide areas, which are finally segmented using the Otsu algorithm. Through experimental verification, the method proposed in this article can clearly segment the target object and background after binary segmentation of remote sensing images. The recognition rate of shallow landslide bodies is not less than 95%, indicating that the method proposed in this article is relatively accurate in identifying shallow landslide bodies in the research area and has good application effects.

Background: Neonatal respiratory failure (NRF) is a critical condition with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to develop a nomogram prediction model to early predict the risk of death in Chinese neonates with NRF. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on NRF neonates from 21 tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across 13 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu Province, China, from March 2019 to March 2022. NRF neonates from one random NICU were selected as the external validation set, while those from the remaining 20 NICUs were divided into the training set and the internal validation set at a 7:3 ratio. Death was the primary outcome. LASSO regression and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify the predictive factors from the training set and then the nomogram was constructed. Results: A total of 5387 neonates with NRF were included in the analysis. Among them, 3444 were in the training set, 1470 were in the internal validation set, and 473 were in the external validation set. The nomogram was constructed based on the eight predictors of the 1-min Apgar score, birth weight, gestational age, the relationship between birth weight and gestational age, mode of first respiratory support, inhaled nitric oxide, antenatal corticosteroids, and vasoactive drugs. The area under the curve of the nomogram in the training set, internal validation set, and external validation set was 0.763, 0.733, and 0.891, respectively. The P-values of the Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test were 0.638, 0.273, and 0.253, respectively. Brier scores were 0.066, 0.072, and 0.037, respectively. The decision curve analysis demonstrated a significant net benefit in all cases. These data indicate the good performance of the nomogram. Conclusions: This nomogram can serve as a reference for clinicians to identify high-risk neonates early and reduce the incidence of neonatal mortality.
