An oligopoly model is used to forecast the need for container handling services in Hong Kong. Hong Kong container handling services, Singapore container handling services and Hong Kong midterm services are evaluated.

Research is given using the model of Sell et al to determine the potential impacts of Route 3 in Hong Kong. The research showed that people's perceptions on travel were influenced by personal attributes the most, whereas Route 3 primarily influenced teenagers travel behavior.

This article discusses the development of transportation infrastructure in Hong Kong to meet the demands of a mobile and growing population. The West Rail, a project of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, is about 49 mile rail system consisting of 40 percent in tunnels, links the country's existing railway systems.

This paper reports on the findings of pedestrian flow characteristics for different types of walking facilities in Hong Kong. Surveys were conducted during peak hours at indoor and outdoor walkways, signalized crosswalks with and without midblock, signalized and nonsignalized crosswalks leading to light-rail transit stations, and five types of walking facilities in railway stations. The collected data were used to develop speed/flow relationships and to calibrate the travel time function for each type of pedestrian facility. Pedestrian flow characteristics on various walking facilities are also compared. The collected data and the established relationships could be used as a basis for the development of pedestrian simulation models for Hong Kong and/or other Asian cities with similar pedestrian characteristics.

This paper is concerned with the modeling of the complex demand-supply relationship in urban taxi services. A neural network model is developed, based on a taxi service situation observed in the urban area of Hong Kong. The input consists of several exogenous variables including number of licensed taxis, incremental charge of taxi fare, average occupied taxi journey time, average disposable income, and population and customer price index; the output consists of a set of endogenous variables including daily taxi passenger demand, passenger waiting time, vacant taxi headway, average percentage of occupied taxis, taxi utilization, and average taxi waiting time. Comparisons of the estimation accuracy are made between the neural network model and the simultaneous equations model. The results show that the neutral network-based macro taxi model can obtain much more accurate information of the taxi services than the simultaneous equations model does. Although the data set used for training the neural network is small, the results obtained thus far are very encouraging. The neural network model can he used as a policy tool by regulator to assist with the decisions concerning the restriction over the number of taxi licenses and the fixing of the taxi fare structure as well as a range of service quality control.

The ventilation system design for better environment in the passenger train vehicles in Hong Kong is discussed. Mean air speed is an important factor on thermal comfort. Macroscopic flow numbers including the Archimedes number, the Reynolds number, and the throw of diffusers are recommended to be design parameters, for determining the mean air speed in the occupied zone of the train compartment. Empirical equations derived earlier are recommended to be used in the design of air diffusion terminal devices for providing a better environment in the passenger train vehicles. It is found that the supply inlet air jet would not sufficiently penetrate into the occupied zone when passengers are closely packed together in a train vehicle. For maintaining an acceptable mean air speed of 0.15 m [s.sup.-1] at the occupied zone in this example, supply air inlet jet of high inlet velocity (15.2 m [s.sup.-1]) and low temperature (6 [degrees] C) should be provided. Air diffusion terminal devices have to be selected carefully in order to improve the indoor air quality inside train vehicles. Diffusers of thinner width are recommended, and they should be placed closely together (0.406 m).

Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MST) was constructed in 1979 to improve public transportation in the region which exhibited limited land area for roads and parking. The MTR was composed of a railway network that connected major urban residential and commercial regions and played a major role in Hong Kong's economic transformation. Improved transportation and accessibility to Hong Kong's major business districts due to the MTR also increased employment rates.

China's adoption of an open-door policy has triggered heavy inflows of investment and technology from Hong Kong. Extensive relocation of manufacturing facilities and the shipment of raw materials, components and finished products between the British colony and Southern China have resulted in very heavy traffic in the region. Massive infrastructure projects are now underway to meet the area's transportation requirements. Accommodating the rapidly expanding Hong Kong population on a rugged terrain of limited area demands a solution to many transportation issues and problems. The old urban area is growing and being modernized. In addition, many new towns are planned in formerly rural areas. A sophisticated transport system has been developed during the past three decades that helps to integrate the old and new communities together as well as to improve the quality of life in this dynamic metropolitan city. The system comprises several major traffic modes that complement one another, including a high-capacity road network, an electrified suburban railway, a busy underground metro, a modern light rail, and a traditional street tramway. Many major bridges and tunnels are built with advanced technology, many of which can be considered a challenging project of its own.

Road transport networks that exist within Eastern Asia are experiencing ever-increasing levels of demand due to rapid population growth within the region. This is especially so for interregional travel because of a continuous dispersion of the population as it expands. Within Hong Kong, new transport infrastructure is required to cater to the demands emerging from growth and decentralization of the population distribution. Initiatives such as park-and-ride schemes can assist transport networks to operate more efficiently and are worthy of assessment as a demand management technique for inclusion in the future transit system. As a result of a comprehensive survey conducted on a trial park-and-ride facility in Hong Kong, lessons have been learned for the implementation of future schemes within Hong Kong and Eastern Asia. This paper provides a description of the data assembled as a result of the survey, and it identifies reasons and factors contributing to the success of the park-and-ride facility in Hong Kong.
