This paper is a literature review, aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the collaboration between the hospitality higher educational sector and the industry to prepare work-ready graduates. A scoping review of 111 research papers published between April 2000 and September 2021 in reputable hospitality and tourism journals was conducted. Research revealed different perceptions between industry employers, educators, and students about competencies required of entry-level hospitality employees. Previous studies confirmed the positive impact of the industry-university collaboration on enhancing hospitality graduates’ employability. The work-integrated model has been widely implemented to develop hospitality students’ skill sets. Thus, hospitality higher education institutions need to adapt to the constantly changing business environment and present graduates with sufficient industry knowledge and skills. This study adds to the current literature on hospitality competencies expected from tertiary education graduates and highlights the appropriate methods to ensure effective industry-academia partnership. Generally, hospitality students and educators place more value on industry knowledge and technical skills. Hospitality tertiary educators should, thus, seek industry inputs more proactively to redesign their education programs, and industry professionals should engage and offer more support to higher education institutions to raise the quality of potential candidates.

Background: The Beta-3 adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) gene codes for the β3 adrenergic receptor involved in control of energy balance by altering lipolysis and thermogenesis in adipocytes. A missense mutation in codon 64 of this gene caused the replacement Trp with Arg (Trp64Arg/rs4994). A cross-sectional study was performed with the joining of 708 non-obese children and 304 obese children in Hanoi. The objective of our study was to find out the association between rs4994 polymorphism of ADRB3 and obesity in Hanoi preschool-age children, considering their eating behaviors. Results: The frequency of C allele in obese group was 16.4%, higher than that in the control group (11.7%, p = 0.003). After conducting univariate analysis, and multivariate analysis adjusted for eating behaviors, a significant association between rs4994 polymorphism and obesity was observed (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study indicated that ADRB3-rs4994 polymorphism can be considered as an independent risk factor for obesity in Vietnamese preschool children.

PurposeIn many countries, innovation in building design for improving energy performance, reducing CO2 emissions and minimizing life cycle cost has received much attention for sustainable development. This paper investigates the importance of optimization tools for enhancing the design performance in the early stages of Vietnam's cooling-dominated buildings in hot and humid climates using an integrated building design approach.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology of this study exploits the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) optimization algorithm coupled with building simulation to research a trade-off between the optimization of investment cost and energy consumption. Our approach focuses on the whole optimization problem of thermal envelope, glazing and energy systems from preliminary design phases. The methodology is then tested for a case study of a non-residential building located in Hanoi.FindingsThe results show a considerable improvement in design performance by our method compared to current building design. The optimal solutions present the trade-off between energy consumption and capital cost in the form of a Pareto front. This helps architects, engineers and investors make important decisions in the early design stages with a large view of impacts of all factors on energy performance and cost.Originality/valueThis is one of the original research to study integrated building design applying the simulation-based genetic optimization algorithm for cooling-dominated buildings in Vietnam. The case study in this article is for a non-residential building in the north of Vietnam but the methodology can also be applied to residential buildings and other regions.

A method using solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) has been optimized for thesimultaneousdeterminationof notoginsenoside R1 and three ginsenosides Rg1, Re, Rb1 in solid, oil, and liquid dietarysupplements. The substances were separated by an InertSustain C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mmi.d.; particle size 5 μm) with a gradient program composed of acetonitrile and water. Linearitieswere in the range of 4.0 - 400 μg/mL with the coefficients of determination were more than0.999. The limits of detection and limits of quantitation were 2.13 - 6.89 μg/g and 7.11 - 22.98μg/g, respectively. The recovery values of the compounds were in the range of 87.2 - 103.5%.The precision study showed the intra-day relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.41 - 2.91%, andinter-day RSD of 1.87 - 4.85%, which meet the AOAC International requirements. The methodwas applied to determine the content of notoginsenoside R1, ginsenoside Rg1, ginsenoside Re,and ginsenoside Rb1 in 20 dietary supplement samples containing Ginseng andPseudoginseng.

This study seeks to contribute to the existing business strategy and the environment literature by examining the effect of governance structures on Chinese firms' environmental performance, and consequently ascertain the extent to which the financial performance–environmental performance nexus is moderated by governance mechanisms. Using a sample of Chinese companies from heavily polluting industries over a 5-year period, our baseline findings suggest that, on average, board size and governing board meetings are positively associated with Chinese firms' environmental performance, whilst board independence and gender diversity have positive, but insignificant association with firms' environmental performance. Our evidence suggests further that the examined internal governance mechanisms have a mixed moderating effect on the link between financial performance and environmental performance. Our findings have important implications for company executives, environmental activists, policy-makers, and regulators. Our results support insights drawn from agency, resource dependence, stakeholder, and legitimacy theories.

A growing literature indicates that untreated wastewater from leaky sewers stands among major sources of pollution to water resources of urban systems. Despite that, the quantification and allocation of sewer exfiltration are often restricted to major pipe areas where inspection data are available. In large-scale urban models, the emission from sewer exfiltration is either neglected (particularly from private sewers) or represented by simplified fixed values, and as such its contribution to the overall urban emission remains questionable. This study proposes an extended model framework which incorporates sewer exfiltration pathway in the catchment model for a better justified pollution control and management of urban systems at a nationwide scale. Nutrient emission from urban areas is quantified by means of the Modelling of Nutrient Emissions in River Systems (MONERIS) model. Exfiltration is estimated for public and private sewers of different age groups in Germany using the verified methods at local to city scales, upscaling techniques, and expert knowledge. Results of this study suggest that the average exfiltration rate is likely to be less than 0.01 L/s per km, corresponding to approximately 1 mm/m/year of wastewater discharge to groundwater. Considering the source and age factors, the highest rate of exfiltration is defined in regions with significant proportions of public sewers older than 40 years. In regions where public sewers are mostly built after 1981, the leakage from private sewers can be up two times higher than such from public sewers. Overall, sewer exfiltration accounts for 9.8% and 17.2% of nitrate and phosphate loads from urban systems emitted to the environment, which increases to 11.2% and 19.5% in the case of no remediation scenario of projected defective sewer increases due to ageing effects. Our results provide a first harmonized quantification of potential leakage losses in urban wastewater systems at the nationwide scale and reveal the importance of rehabilitation planning of ageing sewer pipes in public and private sewer systems. The proposed model framework, which incorporates important factors for urban sewer managers, will allow further targeting the important data need for validating the approach at the regional and local scales in order to support better strategies for the long-term nutrient pollution control of large urban wastewater systems. Camellia hakodae Ninh (CHN) is an ornamental plant of Vietnam, whose extracts is used as a potential phytotherapeutic beverage due to its good improvement in the immune system, reduction of inflammation and assisting the treatment of some chronic diseases. CHN production may be useful for health during this coronavirus epidemic period. This study aimed to evaluate the safety, acute and sub-chronic toxicity of aqueous extracts of CHN leaf in mice. In the acute toxicity study, CHN leaf at doses from 24.0 to 120.0 g/kg/day was given to 5 groups of Swiss mice by oral administration (equivalent in humans is 0.2 to 10 g/kg/day). Mice were observed for general behavioral changes, adverse effects and mortality up to 7 days post-treatment to find the highest dose that did not kill mice (the dose of death 0% (LD0)), the lowest dose that completely killed the mice (the dose of death 100% (LD100)) and the intermediate doses (LD50). In sub-chronic toxicity studies, CHN was given orally to 2 groups of Wistar rats at doses of 2.8 and 14 g CHN/kg/day (equivalent in humans is 0.4 and 2 g/kg) for 28 days taking CHN daily. After 28 days of taking CHN, mice were operated to observe the whole organ for histopathology. The microscopic structure of the liver, spleen, and kidney of at least 30% of mice in each group was randomly checked. The acute toxicity study in all the doses used did not cause any significant change as no LD50 was found. In addition, the sub-chronic toxicity study did not show any treatment-related abnormalities with regard to hematological and biochemical parameters. These results demonstrated that the CHN leaf aqueous extract is safe and does not appear to exert toxicity. Background and Objectives: Streptococcus mutans is a major pathogen that initiates dental plaque and dental caries due to its strong acid production and biofilm-forming ability. Recent studies showed that lactic acid bacteria (LAB), exert useful properties which make them become potential tools to fight against S. mutans and its relating diseases. The current study aimed to isolate and screen for LAB strains that could inhibit S. mutans growth as well as its biofilm production. Methods and Results: Using the spread plate technique, fifty-one LAB strains were isolated from fermented vegetables and healthy human saliva. From that, fourteen isolates showed the inhibitory effect on S. mutans growth in well-diffusion assay. These strains were then screened on the ability in reducing S. mutans biofilm formation by colorimetric assay. Next, potential LAB was evaluated on some probiotic characteristics including saliva amylase tolerance, acid tolerance, bile tolerance as well as antibiotic susceptibility properties. As a result, four strains showed the most promising features were further tested for the ability to reduce Streptococcus mutans biofilm by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation and by expression analysis of biofilm-forming genes (gtfB and luxS) using RT-qPCR method. Finally, these four strains were identified to species level using API® 50 CHL kit and 16S rDNA sequencing method. The result showed that two strains belong to L. plantarums, one belongs to L. brevis and the other is Weisella confusa. Conclusion: This study was successful in isolating LAB that showed promising probiotic effects against S. mutans.

Simultaneous determination of rutin, hesperidin and quercetin contents in several solid dietary supplement samples is possible by HPLC method. The analysis process usedthe Agilent Zorbax Eclipse XDB C18 column (250 x 4.6 mm; 5 µm), a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile - phosphoric acid solution 0.1% with gradient program. The detection was carried out on a DAD detector at 280 nm for hesperidin and at 254 nm for rutin and quercetin. The limit of quantitation of method was at a low level of concentration (0.021g/100g with rutin, 0.047g/100g with hesperidin and 0.0054g/100g with quercetin); the accuracy of the method was within 97.0 - 101.33%; the precision showed 1.11 - 1.92% of relative standard deviation which showed high repeatability of the method. The method was applied to 20 dietary supplements samples, the results indicated a high level for the selectivity and reliability of the method to be applied.

In this study, an integrated model is developed for studying the Sanchi oil spill event, which occurred in the East China Sea in January 2018. The results of the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF-ARW) as well as the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) are used for meteorological forecasting and the hydrodynamic simulations, respectively. These data are adopted as inputs for the OpenOil, a sub-module of OpenDrift, for the oil spill model. Some reference experiments are examined for short-term hindcast. The satellite image is used to validate the numerical result. The oil slicks of the satellite image and the numerical result are of similar shapes. Quantitatively, the simulated oil slick and that from the satellite image are located closely and have similar dimensions of 56 km by 34 km and 54 km by 29 km, respectively. It is found that the accurate results can be obtained by the proposed integrated model with the high-frequency (hourly) and high-spatial-resolution data as inputs, and the wind drift factor has to be added. The long-term 1-month simulation showed that most of the oil particles would move to the northeast of the sinking location and be trapped by the Kuroshio current.

The present study focused on investigating the contamination and risk assessment for 16 metals in street dust from Ha Noi highway, Ho Chi Minh City. The results indicated that the concentrations of metals (mg/kg) were found, in decreasing order, to be Ti (676.3 ± 155.4) > Zn (519.2 ± 318.9) > Mn (426.6 ±113.1) > Cu (144.7 ± 61.5) > Cr (81.4 ± 22.6) > Pb (52.2 ± 22.9) > V (35.5 ± 5.6) > Ni (30.9 ± 9.5) > Co (8.3 ± 1.2) > As (8.3 ± 2.5) > Sn (7.0 ± 3.6) > B (5.7 ± 0.9) > Mo (4.1 ± 1.7) > Sb (0.8 ± 0.3) > Cd (0.6 ± 0.2) > Se (0.4 ± 0.1). The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) showed moderate contamination levels for Pb, Cd, Cu, Sn, Mo, and Zn. The enrichment factor (EF) values revealed moderate levels for Cd, Cu, Mo, and Sn but moderate–severe levels for Zn. The pollution load index of the heavy metals was moderate. The potential ecological risk (207.43) showed a high potential. Notably, 40.7% and 33.5% of the ecological risks were contributed by Zn and Mn, respectively. These findings are expected to provide useful information to decision-makers about environmental quality control strategies.
