Welding fumes contain various metals. Past studies, however, mainly focused on Manganese (Mn)-related neurotoxicity. This study investigated welding-related mixed metal exposure effects on MRI metrics in the basal ganglia (BG) and their dose–response relationship. Subjects with (N  = 23) and without (N  = 24) a welding exposure history were examined. Metal exposure was estimated with an exposure history questionnaire and whole blood metal levels. T1 (weighted-intensity and relaxation time; estimates of brain Mn accumulation), diffusion tensor imaging (axial [AD], mean [MD], radial diffusivity, and fractional anisotropy [FA]; estimates of microstructural differences) metrics in BG (caudate nucleus, putamen, and globus pallidus [GP]), and voxel-based morphometry (for volume) were examined and related with metal exposure measures. Compared with controls, welders showed higher GP R1 (1/T1; P  = 0.034) but no differences in blood metal and T1-weighted (T1W) values in any ROIs (P 's > 0.120). They also had higher AD and MD values in the GP (P 's < 0.033) but lower FA values in the putamen (P  = 0.039) with no morphologic differences. In welders, higher blood Mn and Vanadium (V) levels predicted higher BG R1 and T1W values (P 's < 0.015). There also were significant overall metal mixture effects on GP T1W and R1 values. Moreover, GP AD and MD values showed nonlinear associations with BG T1W values: They increased with increasing T1W values only above certain threshold of T1 values. The current findings suggest that Mn and V individually but also metal mixtures jointly predict GP T1 signals that may in turn contribute to altered DTI metrics in the BG after certain exposure threshold levels. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of long COVID in a community-based representative sample of patients with COVID-19 aged 19–64 years. Methods: A total of 975 participants completed online or telephone surveys at 1 and 3 months post-diagnosis, covering persistent symptoms, daily activity limitations, vaccination status, and underlying diseases. Results: Long COVID, as defined by the WHO criteria, had a prevalence of 19.7–24.9% in females and 12.7% in males. Logistic regression revealed that the odds of having long COVID symptoms were higher among females compared to males (OR, 2.43; 95% CI, 1.53–3.87), and higher in those aged ≥ 30 years compared to those aged 19–29 years: 30–39 years (OR, 2.91; 95% CI, 1.59–5.33), 40–49 years (OR, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.51–4.89), and 50–64 years (OR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.10–3.49). Additionally, patients with underlying diseases had higher odds of long COVID symptoms compared to those without underlying diseases (OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.24–2.64). Among those with long COVID, 54.2% experienced daily activity limitations, and 40.6% received treatment. Furthermore, lower income groups faced greater daily activity limitations but had similar treatment rates to higher income groups. High blood pressure (BP) is a significant risk factor for heart and brain diseases. Previous studies have suggested that heavy metals including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) contribute to hypertension. This study examined the combined effects of heavy metals on blood pressure, considering sex differences. A health impact survey was conducted among 561 residents living near waste incineration facilities in Cheongju, Korea. Blood samples were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations and blood pressure was measured. Multiple linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) methods were used to evaluate the relationship between heavy metal exposure and BP. Men had higher blood Hg and Pb concentrations, whereas women had higher Cd levels. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed no significant association between heavy metals and systolic blood pressure. However, Cd was significantly associated with increased diastolic blood pressure for the total group and women, whereas Pb was associated with increased diastolic blood pressure in men. In the BKMR analysis, the joint effect of the three metals was significantly associated with diastolic blood pressure for individuals below the 45th percentile and above the 55th percentile in men. Soil contamination is associated with a high potential for health issues. This study aimed to investigate the bioaccumulation of heavy metals and its associated health impact among residents near a mining area. We performed environmental monitoring by analyzing lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) levels in soil and rice samples, as well as biomonitoring by analyzing blood and urine samples from 58 residents living near the mine. Additionally, concentration trends were investigated among 26 participants in a 2013 study. The Cd and As levels in the soil samples and Cd levels in the rice samples exceeded the criteria for concern. The geometric mean blood Cd level (2.12 μg/L) was two times higher than that in the general population aged > 40 years. The blood Cd level showed decreasing trends from the previous measurements of 4.56–2.25 μg/L, but was still higher than that in the general population. The blood and urine Cd levels were higher in those with a low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) than in those with normal eGFR. In conclusion, heavy metals from mining areas can accumulate in soil and rice, adversely impacting human health. Continuous environmental monitoring and biomonitoring are required to ensure the safety of residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
