Abstract

Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide health benefits when administered in appropriate amounts by improving or restoring the balance of intestinal microbiota. Various functional probiotic products have been developed due to the growing interest in the health-promoting and anti-aging effects of enhancing the gut microbiome. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum species are known for their potential to extend lifespan. However, this activity is strain or isolation source specific, necessitating the identification of individual strain functionalities. This study used the C. elegans model to screen probiotics for life-extension effects and analyze their functions. The 43 lactic-acid bacteria strains isolated from fermented foods, breast milk, and human feces were subjected to longevity assays, and L. plantarum DS1800 was selected to demonstrate the most effective lifespan extension. The average lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans fed DS1800 increased by 17.36% compared with those fed Escherichia coli OP50. Further analysis of the expression of key genes related to longevity revealed the high expression of the skinhead-1 (skn-1), antibacterial, and heat stress resistance genes via the p38 MAPK pathway. These expression patterns suggest that DS1800 extends the lifespan of C. elegans by enhancing its stress resistance and protecting it against pathogens. Additionally, DS1800 exhibited excellent intestinal adhesion, with 7.56% adhesion to HT-29 cells. 27. Yb Substitution and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of the Ca3–xYbxAlSb3(0 ≤ x≤ 0.81(1)) System

Abstract

A series of Yb-substituted Zintl phases in the Ca3–xYbxAlSb3(0 ≤ x≤ 0.81(1)) system has been synthesized by initial arc melting and post-heat treatment, and their isotypic crystal structures were characterized by both powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All four title compounds adopted the Ca3AlAs3-type structure (space group Pnma, Pearson code oP28, Z= 4). The overall structure can be described as a combination of the 1-dimensional (1D) infinite chain of ∞1[Al(Sb2Sb2/2)] formed by two vertices sharing [AlSb4] tetrahedral moieties and three Ca2+/Yb2+mixed sites located in between these 1D chains. The charge balance and the resultant independency of the 1D chains in the title system were explained by the Zintl-Klemm formalism [Ca2+/Yb2+]3[(4b-Al1–)(1b-Sb2–)2(2b-Sb1–)2/2]. A series of DFT calculations proved that (1) the band overlap between the d-orbital states from two types of cations and the p-orbital states from Sb at the high symmetry Γ point implied a heavily doped degenerate semiconducting behavior of the quaternary Ca2YbAlSb3model and (2) the site preference of Yb for the M1 site was due to the electronic-factor criterion based on the Q values of each atomic site. The electron localization function calculations also proved that the two different shapes of lone pairs of the Sb atoms─the “umbrella-shape” and the “C-shape”─are determined by local geometry and the coordination environment on the anionic frameworks. Thermoelectric measurements of the quaternary title compound Ca2.19(1)Yb0.81AlSb3showed an approximately two times larger ZTvalue than that of ternary Ca3AlSb3at 623 K due to increased electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity originated from Yb substitution for Ca.

Three Zintl phase solid solutions in the Yb5 − xRExAl2Sb6 (RE = Pr, Nd, Sm) system have successfully been synthesized by arc melting followed by annealing. The isotypic crystal structure of these compounds was characterized by PXRD and SXRD analyses, and their Ca5Al2Bi6‐type structure (space group Pbam, Z = 2) was described as a combination of (1) the 3‐dimensional anionic [Al2(Sb4Sb4/2)] frameworks and (2) the space‐filling cations Yb2+ and RE3+ located in between the anionic frameworks. In particular, the anionic frameworks were originally built from the two neighboring tetrahedral [AlSb4] moieties via the Sb1‐Sb1 bridges. The site‐preference of RE3+ for the Yb3/RE‐site with the mixed occupation ratio between ca. 9% and 16% of RE3+ was elucidated by the size‐factor criterion based on the size match between the cationic size and the site volume. The band structures, density of states, and crystal orbital Hamilton population curve analyses were conducted by the tight‐binding linear muffin‐tin orbital method, and the results proved that the RE3+‐doping increased the band degeneracies and the number of resonance peaks near the Fermi level resulting in the improved Seebeck coefficients. The electrical transport property measurements proved that despite the successful addition of n‐type RE3+ dopants in the title Yb5 − xRExAl2Sb6 system, the electrical conductivity decreased due to the canceling off of the newly added n‐type carriers by the already existing p‐type carriers resulting in still the p‐type character. However, the enhanced Seebeck coefficients predicted by the increased effective mass from the DFT calculations eventually improved the overall power factor of the RE3+‐doped title compounds.
