The Galton board is a desktop probability machine traditionally used to visualize the principles of statistical physics with classical particles. Here, we demonstrate a photonic Galton board that enables on-chip observation of single-photon interference. The photonic Galton board, which can be considered as a simplified Boson sampler, consists of a directional coupler matrix terminated by an array of superconducting nanowire detectors to provide spatiotemporal resolution. This design also allows for photon-number-resolving capability, making it suitable for high-speed photon counting. Our results demonstrate the compatibility between single-photon detector array and photonic integrated circuits, paving the way for implementing on-chip large-scale quantum optics experiments and photonic quantum computing., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Second harmonic generation (SHG) extensively employs periodically poled nonlinear crystals through forward quasi-phase-matching to achieve efficient frequency conversion. As poling periods approach sub-micrometers, backward quasi-phase-matching has also been demonstrated, albeit by utilizing pulsed laser drives. The realization of symmetric second harmonic generation, characterized by counterpropagating pumps, however, has remained elusive despite theoretical predictions. The main challenge lies in achieving strong nonlinear coupling with poling period below half the wavelength of the second-harmonic light. The recent emergence of high-quality ferroelectric lithium niobate thin films provides an opportunity for achieving precise domain control at submicron dimensions. In this article, we demonstrate reliable control of ferroelectric domains in thin film lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period down to 370nm, thereby realizing highly efficient continuous-wave pumped symmetric SHG. This demonstration not only validates the feasibility of achieving subwavelength periodic poling on waveguides but also opens new avenues for leveraging submicron ferroelectric domain structures in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics research.

The demand for high-performance electromechanical resonators is ever-growing across diverse applications, ranging from sensing and time-keeping to advanced communication devices. Among the electromechanical materials being explored, thin-film lithium niobate stands out for its strong piezoelectric properties and low acoustic loss. However, in nearly all existing lithium niobate electromechanical devices, the configuration is such that the electrodes are in direct contact with the mechanical resonator. This configuration introduces an undesirable mass-loading effect, giving rise to spurious modes and additional damping. Here, we present an electromechanical platform that mitigates this challenge by leveraging a flip-chip bonding technique to separate the electrodes from the mechanical resonator. By offloading the electrodes from the resonator, our approach yields a substantial increase in the quality factor of these resonators, paving the way for enhanced performance and reliability for their device applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The relation between charge order, its quantum fluctuations and optical phonon modes in cuprate superconductors remains an unsolved problem. The exploration of these excitations is however complicated by the presence of twinned domains. Here, we use uniaxial strain in combination with ultra-high-resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K- and copper L3-edges to study the excitations stemming from the charge ordering wave vector in La1.875Sr0.125CuO4. By detwinning stripe ordering, we demonstrate that the optical phonon anomalies do not show any stripe anisotropy. The low-energy charge excitations also retain an in-plane four-fold symmetry. As such, we find that both phonon and charge excitations are decoupled entirely from the strength of static charge ordering. The almost isotropic character of charge excitations remains a possible source for the strange metal properties found in the normal state of cuprate superconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Nitride ferroelectrics have recently emerged as promising alternatives to oxide ferroelectrics due to their compatibility with mainstream semiconductor processing. ScAlN, in particular, has exhibited remarkable piezoelectric coupling strength ($K^2$) comparable to that of lithium niobate (LN), making it a valuable choice for RF filters in wireless communications. Recently, ScAlN has sparked interest in its use for nanophotonic devices, chiefly due to its large bandgap facilitating operation in blue wavelengths coupled with promises of enhanced nonlinear optical properties such as a large second-order susceptibility ($\chi^{(2)}$). It is still an open question whether ScAlN can outperform oxide ferroelectrics concerning the Pockels effect -- an electro-optic coupling extensively utilized in optical communications devices. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration of ScAlN's Pockels effect. Our findings reveal that the electro-optic coupling of ScAlN, despite being weak at low Sc concentration, may be significantly enhanced at high levels of Sc doping, which points the direction of continued research efforts to unlock the full potential of ScAlN.

Sapphire is a promising wideband substrate material for visible photonics. It is a common growth substrate for III-nitride light-emitting diodes and laser structures. Doped sapphires are important gain media foundational to the development of titanium-sapphire and ruby lasers. For lasers operating at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, a photonic platform that minimizes loss while maximizing gain material overlap is crucial. Here, we introduce a novel low-loss waveguiding strategy that establishes high-performance integrated photonics on sapphire substrates. This platform achieves a high intrinsic quality factor of 5.6 million near 780 nm and features direct compatibility with a range of solid-state laser gain media.

We demonstrate optomechanics in the sub-terahertz regime. An optical racetrack resonator, patterned from thin-film lithium niobate, is suspended to support mechanical structures oscillating at these extremely high frequencies, which are read out through cavity optomechanical coupling. Our hybrid platform paves the way for advancing mechanical systems in the quantum regime at elevated temperatures.

First-principles calculations have been used to investigate the electronic and topological properties of the two-dimensional C6-2x(BN)x biphenylene network, a graphene-like structure composed of not only hexagonal ring but also octagonal and square rings. Nontrivial topological properties have been found in two of them, with a stoichiometry of C4BN and C2(BN)2. The former C4BN is predicted to be a type-II Dirac semimetal with a superconducting critical temperature Tc=0.38K, which is similar to the pure carbon biphenylene network (C-BPN). The latter shows a novel isolated edge state exists between the conduction and valence bands. By regulation of strains and virtual-crystal approximation calculations, we found the annihilation of two pairs of Dirac points (DPs) in the non-high symmetric region (non-HSR) causes the two corresponding edge states stick together to generate this isolated edge state. In addition, we found that one pair of DPs arises from the shift of DPs in the C-BPN, while another new pair of DPs emerges around the Time Reversal Invariant Momenta (TRIM) point X due to the doping of boron and nitrogen. We constructed a tight-binding (TB) model to reveal the mechanism of forming the isolated edge state from the C-BPN to C2(BN)2. U-based binary alloys have been widely adopted in fast nuclear reactors, but their stability under extreme conditions of high-pressure is almost unknown, mounting up to latent risk in applications. Here, possible ordered phases in U-Zr system up to 200 GPa are comprehensively investigated by unbiased first-principles structure prediction. Stable U2Zr, metastable U3Zr and U4Zr phases are discovered for the first time, which exhibit strong stability under compression. They all are metallic, with 5f electrons of uranium dominating the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. Prominent ionic interactions between U and Zr atoms, as well as covalent interactions between adjacent uranium atoms, are found. The same strategy is applied to explore the stability of ordered phases in other U-based binary transition metal alloys, U-X (X= Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Y, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W). Stable and metastable ordered phases similar to U-Zr alloy are unveiled, all with similar electronic structures. For these alloys, we find that the structure of U2X (X=Zr, Ti, Hf) hosts a unique hybrid phase transition similar to U2Nb, which is a superposition of a first-order transition and a second-order transition. The prediction of these novel phases not only refutes the stability of the long-believed ordered phase I4/mmm-U2Mo, but also rewrites the phase diagrams of U-X (X= Zr, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta) alloys under high pressure. Microwave-to-optical transducers are integral to the future of superconducting quantum computing, as they would enable scaling and long-distance communication of superconducting quantum processors through optical fiber links. However, optically-induced microwave noise poses a significant challenge in achieving quantum transduction between microwave and optical frequencies. In this work, we study light-induced microwave noise in an integrated electro-optical transducer harnessing Pockels effect of thin film lithium niobate. We reveal three sources of added noise with distinctive time constants ranging from sub-100 nanoseconds to milliseconds. Our results gain insights into the mechanisms and corresponding mitigation strategies for light-induced microwave noise in superconducting microwave-optical transducers, and pave the way towards realizing the ultimate goal of quantum transduction.

Although low-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly detected in the X-ray light curves of accreting black hole X-ray binaries, their origin still remains elusive. In this study, we conduct phase-resolved spectroscopy in a broad energy band for LFQPOs in MAXI J1820+070 during its 2018 outburst, utilizing Insight-HXMT observations. By employing the Hilbert-Huang transform method, we extract the intrinsic quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) variability, and obtain the corresponding instantaneous amplitude, phase, and frequency functions for each data point. With well-defined phases, we construct QPO waveforms and phase-resolved spectra. By comparing the phase-folded waveform with that obtained from the Fourier method, we find that phase folding on the phase of the QPO fundamental frequency leads to a slight reduction in the contribution of the harmonic component. This suggests that the phase difference between QPO harmonics exhibits time variability. Phase-resolved spectral analysis reveals strong concurrent modulations of the spectral index and flux across the bright hard state. The modulation of the spectral index could potentially be explained by both the corona and jet precession models, with the latter requiring efficient acceleration within the jet. Furthermore, significant modulations in the reflection fraction are detected exclusively during the later stages of the bright hard state. These findings provide support for the geometric origin of LFQPOs and offer valuable insights into the evolution of the accretion geometry during the outburst in MAXI J1820+070., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Broadband, energy-efficient signal transfer between cryogenic and room-temperature environment has been a major bottleneck for superconducting quantum and classical logic circuits. Photonic links promise to overcome this challenge by offering simultaneous high bandwidth and low thermal load. However, the development of cryogenic electro-optic modulators -- a key component for photonic readout of electrical signals -- has been stifled by the stringent requirements of superconducting circuits. Rapid single flux quantum circuits (RSFQ), for example, operate with a tiny signal amplitude of only a few millivolts (mV), far below the volt-level signal used in conventional circuits. Here, we demonstrate the first direct optical readout of an RSFQ circuit without additional electrical amplification enabled by a novel superconducting electro-optic modulator (SEOM) featuring a record-low half-wave voltage V{\pi} of 42 mV on a 1 m-long SEOM. Leveraging the low ohmic loss of superconductors, we break the fundamental V{\pi}-bandwidth trade-off and demonstrate electro-optic bandwidth up to 17 GHz on a 0.2 m-long SEOM at cryogenic temperatures. Our work presents a viable solution toward high-bandwidth signal transfer between future large-scale superconducting circuits and room-temperature electronics.

Parametric down-conversion is a widely exploited technique in optics to produce entangled states of photons for quantum information processing and quantum sensing. In the microwave domain, devices based on Josephson junctions, such as Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) and voltage-biased Josephson junctions, have been successfully utilized to generate such states. However, their high susceptibility to magnetic fields has posed challenges in many applications. Here we demonstrate the generation of two-mode squeezed states via four-wave-mixing in a superconducting nanowire resonator patterned from NbN. The NbN nanowire exhibits a strong Kerr nonlinearity, resulting in the emission of a signal-idler pair with a cross-correlation of $g^{(2)}(0) = 11.9$. Owing to the magnetic resilience and high critical temperature ($T_c$) of NbN, our microwave parametric sources based on kinetic inductance promise an expanded range of potential applications.

Superconducting microwave amplifiers are essential for sensitive signal readout in superconducting quantum processors. Typically based on Josephson Junctions, these amplifiers require operation at milli-Kelvin temperatures to achieve quantum-limited performance. Here we demonstrate a quantum microwave amplifier that employs radiative cooling to operate at elevated temperatures. This kinetic-inductance-based parametric amplifier, patterned from a single layer of high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ NbN thin film\cmt{in the form of a nanobridge}, maintains a high gain and meanwhile enables low added noise of 1.3 quanta when operated at 1.5 Kelvin. Remarkably, this represents only a 0.2 quanta increase compared to the performance at a base temperature of 0.1 Kelvin. By uplifting the parametric amplifiers from the mixing chamber without compromising readout efficiency, this work represents an important step for realizing scalable microwave quantum technologies.

UV and visible photonics enable applications ranging from spectroscopic sensing to communication and quantum information processing. Photonics structures in these wavelength regimes, however, tend to experience higher loss than their IR counterpart. Particularly in the near-UV band, on-chip optical microresonators have not yet achieved a quality factor beyond 1 million. Here we report ultra-low-loss photonic waveguides and resonators patterned from alumina thin films prepared by a highly scalable atomic layer deposition process. We demonstrate ultra high Q factor of 1.5$\,\times\,$10$^6$ at 390nm, a record value at UV bands, and 1.9$\,\times\,$10$^6$ at 488.5nm.

ScAlN is an emerging ferroelectric material that possesses large band gap, strong piezoelectricity, and holds great promises for enhanced \chi^{(2)} nonliearity. In this study, we demonstrate high-fidelity ferroelectric domain switching and periodic poling of Al-polar ScAlN thin film epitaxially grown on on c-axis sapphire substrate using gallium nitride as a buffer layer. Uniform poling of ScAlN with periods ranging from 2 um to 0.4 um is realized. The ability to lithographically control the polarization of epitaxial ScAlN presents a critical advance for its further exploitation in ferroelectric storage and nonlinear optics applications., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Frequency conversion of dissipative solitons associated with the generation of broadband optical frequency combs having a tooth spacing of hundreds of giga-hertz is a topical challenge holding the key to practical applications in precision spectroscopy and data processing. The work in this direction is underpinned by fundamental problems in nonlinear and quantum optics. Here, we present the dissipative two-colour bright-bright and dark-dark solitons in a quasi-phase-matched microresonator pumped for the second-harmonic generation in the near-infrared spectral range. We also found the breather states associated with the pulse front motion and collisions. The soliton regime is found to be typical in slightly phase-mismatched resonators, while the phase-matched ones reveal broader but incoherent spectra and higher-order harmonic generation. Soliton and breather effects reported here exist for the negative tilt of the resonance line, which is possible only via the dominant contribution of second-order nonlinearity., Comment: 6 figures

Many proposals to scale quantum technology rely on modular or distributed designs where individual quantum processors, called nodes, are linked together to form one large multinode quantum computer (MNQC). One scalable method to construct an MNQC is using superconducting quantum systems with optical interconnects. However, a limiting factor of these machines will be internode gates, which may be two to three orders of magnitude noisier and slower than local operations. Surmounting the limitations of internode gates will require a range of techniques, including improvements in entanglement generation, the use of entanglement distillation, and optimized software and compilers, and it remains unclear how improvements to these components interact to affect overall system performance, what performance from each is required, or even how to quantify the performance of each. In this paper, we employ a `co-design' inspired approach to quantify overall MNQC performance in terms of hardware models of internode links, entanglement distillation, and local architecture. In the case of superconducting MNQCs with microwave-to-optical links, we uncover a tradeoff between entanglement generation and distillation that threatens to degrade performance. We show how to navigate this tradeoff, lay out how compilers should optimize between local and internode gates, and discuss when noisy quantum links have an advantage over purely classical links. Using these results, we introduce a roadmap for the realization of early MNQCs which illustrates potential improvements to the hardware and software of MNQCs and outlines criteria for evaluating the landscape, from progress in entanglement generation and quantum memory to dedicated algorithms such as distributed quantum phase estimation. Rare earth emitters enable critical quantum resources including spin qubits, single photon sources, and quantum memories. Yet, probing of single ions remains challenging due to low emission rate of their intra-4f optical transitions. One feasible approach is through Purcell enhanced emission in optical cavities. The ability to modulate cavity-ion coupling in real time will further elevate the capacity of such systems. Here, we demonstrate direct control of single ion emission by embedding erbium dopants in an electro-optically active photonic crystal cavity patterned from thin-film lithium niobate. Purcell factor over 170 enables single ion detection, which is verified by second-order autocorrelation measurement. Dynamic control of emission rate is realized by leveraging electro-optic tuning of resonance frequency. Using this feature, storage and retrieval of single ion excitation is further demonstrated, without perturbing the emission characteristics. These results promise new opportunities for controllable single photon sources and efficient spin-photon interfaces.

Hybrid superconducting-photonic microresonators are a promising platform for realizing microwave-to-optical transduction. However, the absorption of scattered photons by the superconductors leads to unintended microwave resonance frequency variation and linewidth broadening. Here, we experimentally study the dynamics of this effect and its impact on microwave-to-optics conversion in an integrated lithium niobate-superconductor hybrid resonator platform. We unveiled an adiabatic frequency shifting of the intracavity microwave photons induced by the fast photo-responses of the thin-film superconducting resonator. As a result, the temporal and spectral responses of electro-optics transduction are modified and well described by our theoretical model. This work provides important insights on the light-induced conversion dynamics which must be considered in future designs of hybrid superconducting-photonic system.

Superconducting parametric amplifiers are crucial components in microwave quantum circuits for enabling quantum-limited signal readout. The best-performing such amplifiers are often based on Josephson junctions, which however are sensitive to magnetic fields. Therefore, they require magnetic shields and are not easily integratable with other quantum systems that operates within magnetic fields, such as spin ensemble quantum memories. To tackle this challenge, we have developed a kinetic inductance-based parametric amplifier featuring a NbN nanobridge instead of Josephson Junctions, which provides the desired nonlinearity for a strong parametric gain up to 42 dB. The added noise of this nanobridge kinetic-inductance parametric amplifier (hereby referred as NKPA) is calibrated and found to be $0.59\pm 0.03$ quanta for phase-preserving amplification, approaching the quantum limit of 0.5 quanta. Most importantly, we show that such excellent noise performance is preserved in an in-plane magnetic field up to 427 mT, the maximum field available in our experiment. This magnetic field-resilient parametric amplifier presents an opportunity towards addressing single electron-spin resonance and more efficient search for Axions as well as Majorana Fermions., Comment: Article, 8 pages, 3 figures

We present a nonlinear multimode superconducting electroacoustic system, where the interplay between superconducting kinetic inductance and piezoelectric strong coupling establishes an effective Kerr nonlinearity among multiple acoustic modes at 10 GHz that could hardly be achieved via intrinsic mechanical nonlinearity. By exciting this multimode Kerr system with a single microwave tone, we further demonstrate a coherent electroacoustic frequency comb and provide theoretical understanding of multimode nonlinear interaction in the superstrong coupling limit. This nonlinear superconducting electroacoustic system sheds light on the active control of multimode resonator systems and offers an enabling platform for the dynamic study of microcombs at microwave frequencies.

Single-photon detectors are ubiquitous in quantum information science and quantum sensing. They are key enabling technologies for numerous scientific discoveries and fundamental tests of quantum optics. Photon-number-revolving detectors are the ultimate measurement tool of light. However, few detectors to date can provide high-fidelity photon number resolution at few-photon levels. Here, we demonstrate an on-chip detector that can resolve up to 100 photons by spatiotemporally multiplexing an array of superconducting nanowires along a single waveguide. The unparalleled photon number resolution paired with the high-speed response exclusively allows us to unveil the quantum photon statistics of a true thermal light source for the first time, which is realized by direct measurement of high-order correlation function g^(N) with N up to 15, observation of photon-subtraction-induced photon number enhancement, and quantum-limited state discrimination against a coherent light source. Our detector provides a viable route towards various important applications, including photonic quantum computation and quantum metrology.

Quantum transduction is an essential ingredient in scaling up distributed quantum architecture and is actively pursued based on various physical platforms. However, demonstrating a transducer with positive quantum capacity is still practically challenging. In this work, we discuss a new approach to relax the impedance matching condition to half impedance matching condition, which is achieved by introducing two-photon drive in the electro-optic transducer. We show the quantum transduction capacity can be enhanced and can be understood in a simple interference picture with the help of Bloch-Messiah decomposition. The parameter regimes with positive quantum capacity is identified and compared with and without the drive, indicating that the parametric drive-induced enhancement is really promising in demonstrating quantum state conversion, and is expected to boost the performance of transduction with various physical platforms.

Advances in microresonator-based soliton generation promise chip-scale integration of optical frequency comb for applications spanning from time keeping to frequency synthesis. Miniaturized cavities harness Kerr nonlinearity and enable terahertz soliton repetition rates. However, such high repetition rates are not amenable to direct electronic detection. Here, we demonstrate hybrid Kerr and electro-optic microcombs using the lithium niobate thin film that exhibits both Kerr and Pockels nonlinearities. By interleaving the high-repetition-rate Kerr soliton comb with the low-repetition-rate electro-optic comb on the same waveguide, the wide Kerr soliton mode spacing is divided within a single chip, allowing for subsequent electronic detection and feedback control of the soliton repetition rate. Our work establishes an integrated electronic interface to Kerr solitons of terahertz repetition rates, paving the path towards chipscale optical-to-microwave frequency division and comb locking.

The study of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ sits at the confluence of simplicity and complexity: on one hand, the model for Ising chains -- the building blocks of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ -- in a transverse field, can be exactly solved and, thus, serves as an archetype of quantum criticality; on the other hand, the weak but nonzero interchain coupling adds geometric frustration to the stage, substantially complicating the phase diagram. Here we utilize low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements to study the low-lying magnetic excitations in CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and its spin-1 analogue NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The thermal conductivity is found to be suppressed around the quantum critical point, where the specific heat is enhanced due to gapless magnetic excitations, pointing to the localized nature of the latter. These results highlight the predominant role of frustration in determining the quantum critical magnetic excitations of spin chains, which may furthermore underlie the remarkable similarities between the phenomenology of these spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract The magneto-optical trap (MOT) is an essential tool for collecting and preparing cold atoms with a wide range of applications. We demonstrate a planar-integrated MOT by combining an optical grating chip with a magnetic coil chip. The flat grating chip simplifies the conventional six-beam configuration down to a single laser beam; the flat coil chip replaces the conventional anti-Helmholtz coils of a cylindrical geometry. We trap 10^{4} cold ^{87}\text{Rb} atoms in the planar-integrated MOT, at a point 3-9 mm above the chip surface. This novel configuration effectively reduces the volume, weight, and complexity of the MOT, bringing benefits to applications including gravimeter, clock and quantum memory devices.

Thin film lithium niobate (LN) has recently emerged as a playground for chip-scale nonlinear optics and leads to highly efficient frequency conversions from near infrared to near-visible bands. For many nonlinear and quantum photonics applications, it is desirable to operate deep into the visible band within LN's transparency window. However, the strong material dispersion at short wavelengths makes phase-matching difficult, necessitating sub-micron scale control of domain structures for efficient quasi-phase-matching (QPM). Here we report the operation of thin film LN in the blue wavelength and high fidelity poling of thin-film LN waveguide to this regime. As a result, quasi-phase matching is realized between IR (871nm) and blue (435.5nm) wavelengths in a straight waveguide and prompts strong blue light generation with a conversion efficiency $2900\pm400\%W^{-1}cm^{-2}$, Comment: 5 Pages, 2 figures

Cavity magnonics deals with the interaction of magnons - elementary excitations in magnetic materials - and confined electromagnetic fields. We introduce the basic physics and review the experimental and theoretical progress of this young field that is gearing up for integration in future quantum technologies. Much of its appeal is derived from the strong magnon-photon coupling and the easily-reached nonlinear regime in microwave cavities. The interaction of magnons with light as detected by Brillouin light scattering is enhanced in magnetic optical resonators, which can be employed to manipulate magnon distributions. Integrated photonics is at the heart of many classical technologies, from optical communications to biosensors, LIDAR, and data center fiber interconnects. There is strong evidence that these integrated technologies will play a key role in quantum systems as they grow from few-qubit prototypes to tens of thousands of qubits. The underlying laser and optical quantum technologies, with the required functionality and performance, can only be realized through the integration of these components onto quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPICs) with accompanying electronics. In the last decade, remarkable advances in quantum photonic integration and a dramatic reduction in optical losses have enabled benchtop experiments to be scaled down to prototype chips with improvements in efficiency, robustness, and key performance metrics. The reduction in size, weight, power, and improvement in stability that will be enabled by QPICs will play a key role in increasing the degree of complexity and scale in quantum demonstrations. In the next decade, with sustained research, development, and investment in the quantum photonic ecosystem (i.e. PIC-based platforms, devices and circuits, fabrication and integration processes, packaging, and testing and benchmarking), we will witness the transition from single- and few-function prototypes to the large-scale integration of multi-functional and reconfigurable QPICs that will define how information is processed, stored, transmitted, and utilized for quantum computing, communications, metrology, and sensing. Materials with strong $\chi^{(2)}$ optical nonlinearity, especially lithium niobate, play a critical role in building optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). However, chip-scale integration of low-loss $\chi^{(2)}$ materials remains challenging and limits the threshold power of on-chip $\chi^{(2)}$ OPO. Here we report the first on-chip lithium niobate optical parametric oscillator at the telecom wavelengths using a quasi-phase matched, high-quality microring resonator, whose threshold power ($\sim$30 $\mu$W) is 400 times lower than that in previous $\chi^{(2)}$ integrated photonics platforms. An on-chip power conversion efficiency of 11% is obtained at a pump power of 93 $\mu$W. The OPO wavelength tuning is achieved by varying the pump frequency and chip temperature. With the lowest power threshold among all on-chip OPOs demonstrated so far, as well as advantages including high conversion efficiency, flexibility in quasi-phase matching and device scalability, the thin-film lithium niobate OPO opens new opportunities for chip-based tunable classical and quantum light sources and provides an potential platform for realizing photonic neural networks.

Superconducting cavity electro-optics (EO) presents a promising route to coherently convert microwave and optical photons and distribute quantum entanglement between superconducting circuits over long-distance through an optical network. High EO conversion efficiency demands transduction materials with strong Pockels effect and excellent optical transparency. Thin-film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) offers these desired characteristics however so far has only delivered unidirectional conversion with efficiencies on the order of $10^{-5}$, largely impacted by its prominent photorefractive (PR) effect at cryogenic temperatures. Here we show that, by mitigating the PR effect and associated charge-screening effect, the device's conversion efficiency can be enhanced by orders of magnitude while maintaining stable cryogenic operation, thus allowing a demonstration of conversion bidirectionality and accurate quantification of on-chip efficiency. With the optimized monolithic integrated superconducting EO device based on TFLN-on-sapphire substrate, an on-chip conversion efficiency of 1.02% (internal efficiency, 15.2%) is realized. Our demonstration indicates that with further device improvement, it is feasible for TFLN to approach unitary internal conversion efficiency.

Frequency microcombs, successors to mode-locked laser and fiber combs, enable miniature rulers of light for applications including precision metrology, molecular fingerprinting, and exoplanet discoveries. To enable the frequency ruling function, microcombs must be stabilized by locking their carrier-envelop offset frequency. So far, the microcomb stabilization remains compounded by the elaborate optics external to the chip, thus evading its scaling benefit. To address this challenge, here we demonstrate a nanophotonic chip solution based on aluminum nitride thin films, which simultaneously offer optical Kerr nonlinearity for generating octave soliton combs and Pockels nonlinearity for enabling heterodyne detection of the offset frequency. The agile dispersion control of crystalline III-Nitride photonics permits high-fidelity generation of solitons with features including 1.5-octave comb span, dual dispersive waves, and sub-terahertz repetition rates down to 220 gigahertz. These attractive characteristics, aided by on-chip phase-matched aluminum nitride waveguides, allow the full determination of the offset frequency. Thin-film lithium niobate is an attractive integrated photonics platform due to its low optical loss and favorable optical nonlinear and electro-optic properties. However, in applications such as second harmonic generation, frequency comb generation, and microwave-to-optics conversion, the device performance is strongly impeded by the photorefractive effect inherent in thin-films. In this paper, we show that the dielectric cladding on lithium niobate microring resonator has a significant influence on the photorefractive effect. By removing the dielectric cladding layer, the photorefractive effect in lithium niobate ring resonators can be effectively mitigated. Our work presents a reliable approach to control the photorefractive effect on thin-film lithium niobate and will further advance the performance of integrated classical and quantum photonic devices based on thin-film lithium niobate.

Single-mode high-index-contrast waveguides have been ubiquitously exploited in optical, microwave, and phononic structures for achieving enhanced wave-matter interactions. Although micro-scale optomechanical and electro-optical devices have been widely studied, optomagnonic devices remain a grand challenge at the microscale. Here, we introduce a planar optomagnonic waveguide platform based on a ferrimagnetic insulator that simultaneously supports single transverse mode of spin waves (magnons) and highly confined optical modes. The co-localization of spin and light waves gives rise to enhanced inverse Faraday effect, and as a result, magnons are excited by an effective magnetic field generated by interacting optical photons. Moreover, the strongly enhanced optomagnonic interaction allows us to observe such effect using low-power (milliwatt level) light signals in the continuous-wave form, as opposed to high-intensity (megawatt peak power) light pulses that are typically required in magnetic bulk materials or thin films. The optically-driven magnons are detected electrically with preserved phase coherence, showing the feasibility for launching spin waves with low-power continuous optical fields.
