- Abstract
Generation of quasi-monoenergetic ion pulse by laser-driven acceleration is one of the hot topics in laser plasma physics. In this study, we present a new method for the in situ deposition of an ultra-thin D
2 O layer on the surface of an aluminum foil target utilizing a spherical D2 O capsule. Employing a 1019 W/cm2 laser, we achieve the acceleration of 10.8 MeV deuterons with an energy spread of ΔE/E = 4.6% in the most favorable shot. The energy spread depends on the exposure time of the D2 O capsule in the vacuum chamber. This method has the potential to extend its applicability to other ion species. Introduction: This study evaluated the clinical outcomes of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for both pathologically diagnosed (PD) and clinically diagnosed (CD) early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and explored the significance of accurate expert computed tomography (CT) interpretation. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 95 patients with early‐stage NSCLC who received SBRT at our institution. Patients were classified into CD and PD groups. Two chest radiologists retrospectively interpreted the pre‐SBRT CT images to determine the tumor subtype and probability of malignancy (PM). Clinical findings, CT features, and treatment outcomes were compared between the two groups. The survival rate of the CD group was analyzed separately according to the PM grade. Results: Median overall survival for the CD and PD groups was 6.0 and 5.4 years (P = 0.57), respectively. Median cause‐specific survival was 10.2 years in the CD group and not reached in the PD group (P = 0.76). In the CD group, lung cancer mortality was lower in the low PM group (25% [1 of 4]) than in the high PM group (47.4% [9 of 19]). Conclusion: It may be desirable to evaluate the PM of the nodule using expert CT interpretation to decide whether SBRT is indicated in CD early‐stage NSCLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research Article - Abstract
Background/Aim: To investigate the clinical outcomes of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in patients with cervical esophageal carcinoma and analyze the prognostic factors. Patients and Methods: Thirty-nine patients with cervical esophageal carcinoma were retrospectively identified among consecutive patients who received CCRT between November 2009 and September 2019 at our institution. The patients were treated by intensity-modulated radiation therapy (N=13) or three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (N=26). Results: The median follow-up period was 35 months (range=2-158 months). There were 32 men and 7 women with a median age of 66 years (range=50-83 years). Clinical stages were I in 6 patients, II in 4, III in 19, and IV in 10. Hypopharyngeal invasion was noted in 8 patients. The initial treatment responses were evaluated 3-6 weeks after the final session of CCRT: a complete response (CR) in 24 patients, a partial response (PR) in 13, and stable disease (SD) in 2. Two- and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 73.8 and 59.4%, respectively. Two- and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 57.8 and 48.0%, respectively. A univariate analysis identified the initial treatment response (CR or non-CR) as a significant factor for OS (p=0.0002) and PFS (p=0.0026). The CR rate was 81.0% in patients with T1-3 and 33.3% in those with T4 (p=0.0038). Conclusion: Patients with cervical esophageal carcinoma in Nagasaki University Hospital in Japan achieved superior outcomes compared with previous studies. CR rate was higher in patients with T1-3 and correlated with better OS.

Research Article - Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to clarify the usefulness of the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) for predicting a patient’s prognosis after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with radiofrequency ablation (TACE-RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of Barcelona-Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage 0 or A. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed cases of patients with HCC who underwent TACE-RFA (Jan 2005 to Dec 2015). Nodules were categorized based on their LI-RADS v2018 core. The LI-RADS category was assigned to each nodule using dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography. LR-3, LR-4 and LR-5 nodules were extracted. The overall (OS) and recurrence-free (RFS) survival was assessed among patients with BCLC 0 and BCLC A disease. Results: Of the 64 nodules extracted, 22 were LR-3 or -4 (mean±standard deviation=14.8±6.7 mm) and 42 were LR-5 (17.1±6.9 mm). Regarding OS, there was no significant difference between those with LR-3 or -4 and LR-5 (p=0.278). In terms of RFS, there was a significant difference between those with LR-3 or -4 and those with LR-5 (p=0.03). In particular, patients with BCLC A with LR-5 nodules had significantly poorer RFS than those with LR-3 or -4 (p=0.016) nodules. Conclusion: For patients with BCLC A, LR-3 or -4 nodules are associated with a better prognosis than LR-5 nodules.

- Abstract
In Southeast Asia, history has it in the past few decades or so that fishing operations were simple and conducted in nearshore areas using non-motorized or non-mechanized fishing vessels. Fish landings were barely enough for domestic consumption, but some countries dared to explore the export market with their fishery products that gave them in return, not only additional economic advantage but also the inspiration to enhance their fishing capabilities. Adapting the fishing technologies learned from more advanced countries, e.g. trawl fisheries, many Southeast Asian countries were able to increase their fish landings. Causing a domino effect, many fishing vessels were deployed to sea using a great variety of fishing gears, not minding their possible impacts on the fishery resources. Eventually, their catch started to get smaller not only in terms of quantity but also in size, prompting the governments to look for the ways and means of properly managing the fishery resources. In an effort to address the issues at hand, one of the major decisions made by the governments of the Southeast Asian countries was to agree on the establishment of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in December 1967. With an initial task of promoting fisheries as means of improving the food situation in Southeast Asia, SEAFDEC has since then served as a catalyst for the transformation of the region’s fisheries towards sustainability. To enable SEAFDEC to carry out such gigantic tasks, the Southeast Asian governments also agreed to establish the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) in 1968 in Samut Prakan, Thailand, with an initial task of training the officers and technical staff from the region to enhance their capabilities in directing and managing fishing activities. As the SEAFDEC responsibilities in the region progressed, TD in mid-1970s redirected its focus on the development of responsible fishing technologies and practices, and the promotion of marine and coastal fis

- Abstract
The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) has been working incessantly for the sustainability of fisheries in the Southeast Asian region. Such efforts had been clearly manifested in the progress and development of fisheries in the region that prompted the ASEAN Member States (AMSs) to adopt the series of decennial ASEAN-SEAFDEC Resolutions and Plans of Action on Sustainable Fisheries for Food Security for the ASEAN Region in 2001, 2011, and 2020, which have served as policy frameworks and priority actions for the AMSs to support their efforts towards attaining sustainability in fisheries development and enhancing the contribution of fisheries to food security and socioeconomic advancement. As a result from such efforts, many Southeast Asian countries have become major exporters of fish and fishery products to the world’s fish market. Nonetheless, it is feared that such feat might not be sustained in the long run considering the fate of marine capture fisheries, where its production had been dwindling due to the unhealthy condition of the marine fishery resources brought about by uncontrollable non-responsible fishing activities resulting in their over-exploitation and devastation. In order to address such concerns, it had become necessary to institute reforms within SEAFDEC as well as in the regional arena, which could include harnessing the potentials of aquaculture and inland fisheries towards sustainable development. Amidst such a situation, SEAFDEC and the AMSs are not feeling desperate as these other fisheries sub-sectors could provide the gleam of hope because of their potentials that could be tapped to sustain the region’s fishery production and eventually supply the rising demand for food fish by the increasing population. In view of the potentials that such sub-sectors could offer, SEAFDEC has always made sure that the sustainability of inland fisheries and aquaculture is embedded in its plans, programs and activities, as indicated in the 2

An analysis of the molecular structure of Saccharomycopsis fibuligera alpha-amylase (Sfamy) reveals a tyrosine 83 (Y83) residue and a tryptophan 84 (H84) residue located at the Y83 and W84 sites in Sfamy's active center, respectively. Leucine (L) and asparagine (N) Y83 mutants and W84's L mutant promote transglycosylation and retard hydrolysis. Y83's phenylamine (F) mutant and W84's F and Y mutants retard hydrolysis activity. The substitution of the mutants with nonaromatic residues increase Sfamy's affinity for transglycosylation.

Substitution of the 210th lysine residue in the Saccharomycopsis alpha-amylase (Sfamy) with arginine and asparagine resulted in the alteration of the major cleavage sites of the enzyme's substrates. The original Sfamy specifically hydrolyzed the second hydrogen bond from the reducing end of maltotetraose, but both mutations shifted the preferential cleavage site to the primary glycosidic bond from the reducing end of the saccharide.

NON-alcoholic fatty liver disease ,FATTY degeneration ,ANIMAL disease models ,CARNITINE palmitoyltransferase ,VITAMIN E ,PROTEIN expression - Abstract
Aim: Antioxidant therapy for with vitamin E appears to be effective for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the mechanism of action and optimal therapeutic dosage is unclear. The present study was undertaken to examine whether the effects of α‐tocopherol (α‐Toc) on NAFLD are dose‐dependent in a diet‐induced obese model. Methods: Male mice were fed standard chow, high‐fat (HF) diet, HF diet with low‐dose, or with high dose of α‐Toc supplementation. Histological findings, triglyceride content, and the levels of protein expression related to fatty acid synthesis/oxidation such as carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT‐1) of liver were evaluated. In addition, 2‐tetradecylglycidic acid (TDGA), a CPT‐1 inhibitor, was administered to mice fed HF diet with low‐dose of α‐Toc. Finally, HepG2 cells in fat‐loaded environment were treated with 0–50 μM α‐Toc. Results: Treatment of low‐dose of α‐Toc decreased HF‐induced hepatic fat accumulation, but this finding was not observed in treatment of high dose of α‐Toc. HF‐induced reduction of CPT‐1 was attenuated with low‐dose of α‐Toc but not with high dose of α‐Toc. TDGA suppressed the improvement of histological findings in liver induced by low‐dose of α‐Toc treatment. CPT‐1 expression in HepG2 cells increased in response to low‐dose of α‐Toc, but not in high dose. Conclusions: Dual action of α‐Toc on CPT‐1 protein levels was observed. The effect of vitamin E on NAFLD may be not be dose‐dependent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
