Background: In 2020, the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 led to a pandemic that had a major impact on the global health care systems. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on nasal bone (NB) fracture patterns/distributions and circumstances in a German cranio-maxillofacial trauma center. Materials and methods: This retrospective study compared the nasal fracture patterns of patients in the PreCovid (PC) era (February 2019 - January 2020) with patients in the IntraCovid (IC) era (February 2020 - January 2021). In addition to baseline characteristics, the type of NB fractures, the circumstances leading to NB fracture and hospital admissions/treatments were analyzed. Results: The present study showed a significant decrease in the total number of NB fractures during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the IC period, a significant increase in falls and virus-/flu associated syncopes leading to NB fractures was detected. At the same time, a significant decrease in sports accidents, road traffic accidents and interpersonal violence leading to NB fractures was observed in the IC period. Under the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic, a significant increase in accidents at home, accidents during the weekdays and closed reductions under local anesthesia was detected when being compared to the PC period. The daytime of trauma leading to NB fractures also changed significantly from night-time (PC) to morning-time (IC). Conclusion: The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the NB fracture circumstances and treatment modalities. Therefore, the results of this study can serve as a baseline for further studies of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on NB fracture patterns among different countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although safety of home and preschool setting is a key quality indicator of the two main environments in which preschoolers spend most of their day, most unintentional injuries during early childhood take place in these two settings. Thus, despite the frequency of accidents during early childhood, scarce research has explored both the epidemiology of childhood injuries and the knowledge and attitudes of ECEC professionals' and preschoolers' parents towards first aid. Acknowledging this gap in literature, the present study aimed at exploring 74 Greek ECEC professionals' and 213 preschoolers' parents' knowledge and attitudes towards first aid. In addition, the study aimed at mapping the most frequently occurring accidents both at home and at preschool, as well as the places withing these two settings where most of the accidents happen. Results of the present study indicate that although participants have positive attitudes towards first aid, and most of them have been trained in first aid, their knowledge of handling accidents and other health related issues is limited. In addition, the results showed accidents rarely happen at home and at preschool. The accidents that have been reported to occur take place during children's free play. The most common places where accidents occur are in the living room and the kitchen. The results highlight the need for frequent training both for parents and ECEC professionals, for intersectoral collaboration between health and education organizations to design interventions and for awareness raising campaigns. With the high-quality development and construction of national economic and livelihood projects, oil and gas have become an important strategic reserve resource for China's economic, political and military security, and the foundation and driving force for comprehensive development and modernization. Among them, the oil and gas pipelines used to transport oil and natural gas are known as the main arteries of national energy development. Due to the high flammability and explosiveness of oil and gas products, the high risk in the operation of oil and gas pipelines, the large number of key components of infrastructure and the complexity of the system, and the frequent occurrence of oil and gas pipeline failure accidents at home and abroad, the research on the prevention and control of oil and gas pipelines in China is still lacking in systematization. This paper systematically reviews the development trend of accident causation theory, leakage monitoring technology and numerical simulation research at home and abroad, and on this basis, summarizes the challenges faced in constructing a systematic accident causation analysis model and the whole life cycle detection simulation, so as to provide a reference for improving the operation safety of oil and gas pipelines in China. Flexor tendon injuries cause serious work and health losses. Studies on flexor tendon injuries have generally focused on treatment modalities. The study's goal is to retrospectively screen the cases admitted to a single center and reveal in detail the causes of injury and the patients' sociodemographic characteristics. The study included 120 patients who applied to our center between January 2015 and December 2017 with a flexor tendon injury and underwent surgery on the same day. We investigated the patients' age, gender, and hand dominance as demographic characteristics. We classified the injury characteristics as the mechanism of the injury, the nature of the injury, the identity and number of affected fingers, the injured area and side, the number of involved tendons, the accompanying fractures, the nerve injury, and the vascular injury. As surgical details, we evaluated the type of anesthesia and the duration of the surgery. We identified 171 flexor tendons and 120 patients, of which 85% (n=102) were male and 15% (n=18) were female. Home accidents caused 26.6% of the injuries (32/120). Most patients had a single finger injury (88/120, 73.3%). Injuries were most common in Zone 2 (61/171, 35.6%). Patients with vascular and nerve injuries, along with flexor tendon injuries, were in the majority (48%). Our study provides detailed sociodemographic information about flexor tendon injuries. Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on midfacial fracture patterns/distributions and circumstances in a German craniomaxillofacial trauma center. Methods: This retrospective study compared the midface fracture patterns (excluding nasal fractures) of patients in the pre-COVID (PC) era (February 2019–January 2020) with patients in the intra-COVID (IC) era (February 2020–January 2021). In addition to baseline characteristics, the type of midface fractures, the circumstances leading to midface fractures, and hospital admissions/treatments were analyzed. Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic, a reduction in the total number of midface fractures was observed (PC = 88 vs. IC = 57). No significant differences were found regarding the midfacial fracture localization between both periods. During the pandemic, there was a significant increase in falls, accidents at home, and virus/flu-associated syncopes. At the same time, a significant decrease in sports accidents, interpersonal violence, and alcohol-related accidents leading to midface fractures was recorded. Furthermore, there was a significant increase in accidents during the morning time with a simultaneous reduction in accidents during the nighttime. In addition to that, a significant delay in days from trauma leading to midface fracture until hospital admission and surgical treatment (ORIF) was revealed. Conclusions: Despite the limitations of a monocentric retrospective study, the current findings lead to the conclusion that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the patterns and circumstances leading to midface fractures. Analyzing the specific characteristics of patients suffering from midfacial fractures under the influence of the COVID-19 period can represent added value in order to treat facial fractures in future pandemics. Based on continuing bonds theory, this research examined the experience and manifestations of continuing bonds of bereaved Muslim mothers with their children who died in home accidents. This qualitative phenomenological study is based on interviews with 15 bereaved mothers (aged 28–46 years) whose children (aged 1–6 years) died 2–7 years before the interviews. Analysis revealed three themes: efforts to continue the physical bonds, challenges in the continuing bonds in cases of traumatic death, and belief in afterlife as the main element of the continuing bonds. The traumatic circumstances of the death challenged the ability to maintain the bond based on positive memories without it being overwhelmed by the traumatic memories of the last moments of the child's life. Religious beliefs played an important role in the characteristics of the bond. Maintaining the bond requires professionals to provide a therapeutic environment where bereaved mothers feel safe talking about it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Stroke survivors are more likely to fall at home. A home hazard assessment may be beneficial to reduce the risk of falling; however, it is resourceful and time-intensive. This study examines the inter-rater reliability and usability of telehealth for a hazard assessment to address the risk of falls. Materials and Methods: Two occupational therapists accessed the telehealth platform from different locations and simultaneously rated participants' home environment using the home falls and accident screening Tool. Stroke survivors and their caregivers answered the telehealth usability questionnaire. Results: A total of 36 stroke survivors and 31 caregivers participated in the study. Gwet's AC1 was used for agreement analysis. The overall AC1 value for the inter-rater reliability was 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66%, 1.00%). There was a moderate correlation between the raters (r=0.57, P=0.000). Bland and Altman graph plot showed a mean difference of -0.61 and 97.2% of the difference score fell within the limits of agreement (95% CI, -5.67%, 4.39%). The overall mean score of the telehealth usability questionnaire was 5.62 out of 7. Conclusion: Telehealth technology is a potential medium that provides an opportunity for synchronous practitioner-client interaction in evaluating home hazards. This study evaluates the epidemiology of nonfatal head injuries among children aged 1 to 4 years associated with consumer products and identifies the specific consumer products associated with these injuries. Data for children aged 1 to 4 years who presented to emergency departments (EDs) from 2015 to 2019 for a nonfatal head injury were extracted from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. An estimated 1 032 429 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 675 822-1 389 063) children presented to US EDs for head injuries, averaging 566 injuries daily. The average rate of head injury did not change over the 5-year study period (slope = −0.003; P =.852); it was highest among children aged 1 year (2.06 per 100 children aged 1 year), which was nearly 3 times that of children aged 4 years (rate ratio = 2.75; 95% CI: 2.73-2.77). Most injuries occurred at home (80.4%) and occurred from interacting with home furnishings (45.1%). This study underscores the need for increased head injury mitigation efforts among young children. Burns are a significant problem with high associated morbidity and mortality worldwide. Bacteremia is a serious complication that is important in increasing the overall fatality rate in burn injury patients. In this study, we report a case of Streptococcus mitis and Klebsiella pneumoniae mixed infection in severe burns in a 40-year-old female. The patient was transferred from an outside hospital to the emergency unit after burn injuries in a gas explosion accident at home. The patient underwent surgical debridement and antibiotics treatment but died due to sepsis and multiorgan failure. Our case study will help to underscore the important role of Streptococcus mitis and Klebsiella pneumoniae as human opportunistic pathogens in severe burn injury patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To identify the characteristics of the users of the HOME FAST-SR, to explore the common home hazards identified and to determine the opinions of older people about the usefulness of the HOME FAST-SR. Data from completed HOME FAST-SR submissions were downloaded from the website hosting the tool, and data from participants who consented to provide additional anonymized information about themselves were included for analysis (n = 250). A further link to an electronic survey was used to gather data about participants' experience of using the HOME FAST-SR (n = 27). Data were downloaded into SPSS and analyzed. Participants had a mean of 11.37 hazards which is in the high-risk category for falls. A total of 12 hazards were identified by more than half of the participants, most of which were modifiable. Participants indicated they agreed that HOME FAST-SR was useable across the criteria, and 57.9% of participants rated the HOME FAST-SR at 4 stars and a further 21.1% rated it at 5 stars. The online HOME FAST-SR is a useable tool that provides older people with an evaluation of their home hazards and information about how to modify these hazards. Objective: To determine the frequency and types of home accidents in children, to evaluate the first aid application knowledge level of parents in case of a possible home accident and its relationship with health literacy. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between November and December 2022, among parents with children aged 1-14 in the Central district of Kütahya province. Data collection form: The survey form consisted of the Self-Efficacy of First Aid Scale for Home Accidents and the Health Literacy Scale. Results: Of the 444 people who participated in the research; 175 of them (39.5%) are between the ages of 17-30, and 268 of them (60.5%) are aged 31 and over. Two hundred ninety-two (67.0%) of the participants are women. Frequency of home accidents in the last year; It was found to be 63.9% (n:133) in the age range of 1-4 years, 61.0% (n:122) in the age range of 5-6 years, and 58.1% (n:115) in the age range of 7-14 years. The most common types of accidents are "fall, slip" and "crash, sprain, injury". A weak positive correlation was found between the Self-Efficacy of First Aid Scale for Home Accidents score and the Health Literacy Scale score (r:0.116, p:0.014). Conclusion: Adopting the approach of increasing the level of health literacy in interventions to be given to parents regarding home accidents and first aid in children may increase the positive effect of the intervention. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection poses a major public health challenge globally, especially among injecting drug users. China has the world's largest burden of HCV infections. However, little is known about the characteristics of transmission networks among drug user populations. This study aims to investigate the molecular epidemiology and transmission characteristics of HCV infections among drug users in Zhuhai, a bustling port city connecting Mainland China and its Special Administrative Regions. Methods: Participants enrolled in this study were drug users incarcerated at Zhuhai's drug rehabilitation center in 2015. Their sociodemographic and behavioral information, including gender, promiscuity, drug use method, and so forth, was collected using a standardized questionnaire. Plasmas separated from venous blood were analyzed for HCV infection through ELISA and RT-PCR methods to detect anti-HCV antibodies and HCV RNA. The 5'UTR fragment of the HCV genome was amplified and further sequenced for subtype identifications and phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic tree was inferred using the Maximum Likelihood method based on the Tamura-Nei model, and the transmission cluster network was constructed using Cytoscape3.8.0 software with a threshold of 0.015. Binary logistic regression models were employed to assess the factors associated with HCV infection. Results: The overall prevalence of HCV infection among drug users was 44.37%, with approximately 19.69% appearing to clear the HCV virus successfully. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that those aged over 40, engaging in injecting drug use, and being native residents were at heightened risk for HCV infection among drug user cohorts. The predominant HCV subtypes circulating among those drug users were 6a (60.26%), followed by 3b (16.7%), 3a (12.8%), 1b (6.41%) and 1a (3.85%), respectively. Molecular transmission network analysis unveiled the presence of six transmission clusters, with the largest propagation cluster consisting of 41 individuals infected with HCV subtype 6a. Furthermore, distinct transmission clusters involved eight individuals infected with subtype 3b and seven with subtype 3a were also observed. Conclusion: The genetic transmission networks revealed a complex transmission pattern among drug users in Zhuhai, emphasizing the imperative for a targeted and effective intervention strategy to mitigate HCV dissemination. Because the head and neck are one of the most frequent locations of burns, it is of paramount importance that plastic surgeons and plastic surgical nurses understand the most effective surgical methods for treating neck contractures and the reconstructive technique required for each case. We introduce the case of a 42-year-old woman who presented with a severe postburn neck contracture that was reconstructed with a pedicled occipito-cervicodorsal flap. We closed the donor-site wound primarily and completely covered the defect with good results. In addition to conventional skin grafts, dermal matrices, and microsurgical techniques, using an occipito-cervico-dorsal flap should be considered when reconstructing postburn neck contractures as it offers good aesthetic and functional outcomes, provides enough tissue and pliable skin, and results in minimal donor-site morbidity. Background and Objectives: Accidental home injuries among older adults are increasing globally, but reporting is limited. This study aims to establish foundational data for program development and policies to prevent accidental injuries at home in older adults by using data on the occurrence of accidental injuries at home and analyzing the risk factors of mortality due to accidental injuries among adults aged 65 years and older. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study used data from the community-based Severe Trauma Survey in South Korea. This study identified general, injury-related, and treatment-related characteristics of older adults who were transported to the emergency department with accidental injuries at home. Single-variable and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for mortality after injury. Results: The majority of older adults in this study who experienced accidental injuries at home were aged 75 to 84 (42.8%) and female (52.8%), with 1465 injured from falls and slips (68.0%). Risk factors for mortality included older age (≥85 years) (ORs 2.25, 95% CI 1.47–3.45), male sex (ORs 1.60, 95% CI 1.15–2.20), mechanism of injury (falls or slips vs. contact injury, ORs 6.76, 95% CI 3.39–13.47; airway obstruction vs. contact injury, ORs 13.96, 95% CI 6.35–30.71), higher severity (moderate vs. mild, ORs 2.56, 95% CI 1.45–4.54; severe vs. mild, ORs 12.24, 95% CI 6.48–23.12; very severe vs. mild, ORs 67.95, 95% CI 38.86–118.81), and receiving a blood transfusion (ORs 2.14, 95% CI 1.24–3.67). Conclusions: Based on these findings, the home and community environments where older adults live should be inspected and monitored, and in-home accidental injury prevention strategies should be developed tailored to the characteristics of older adults' risk factors and their injury-related characteristics. (2) Methods: We conducted a community-based, cross-sectional study in Greece between November and December 2021. We asked parents to complete an anonymous questionnaire voluntarily. Questions focused on accident-preventive measures taken at home during the COVID-19 quarantine. (3) Results: A greater proportion of parents took protective measures for a safer home before the lockdown than during the quarantine, while an interesting percentage of parents never utilized preventive measures for their children. Slightly more than half (58.6%) of parents did not seem to worry about a possible increase in domestic accidents during the quarantine. It was observed that those who had one or two children took more protective measures than those with more than two children. Older parents seemed to explain to their children how to access emergency services more often. Mothers stayed at home with the children more often, and their education affected the presence of some of the assessed measures. In our logistic regression modeling, parental concern about accidents was more related to the incidence of an accident during the pandemic and attendance at seminars. (4) Conclusions: Although the COVID-19 lockdowns disorganized family life, parents were aware of the importance of their parenting role in creating a safe environment for children, but according to the study, there is room for improvement.

Introduction:The Coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic has been caused several physical, mental and psychosocial problems alongside being a respiratory system infection. During pandemic, children were forced to stay at home as a preventative measure. Thus, we aimed to assess the number and characteristics of home accident-related visits in a pediatric emergency department during the pandemic.Methods:This cross-sectional study included all children aged under 18 years who admitted with home accident in two curfew periods and the corresponding periods of previous year. Demographic and clinical data was consisted of age, gender, admission time, time elapsed between accident and pediatric emergency department admission, type of home accident, medical and surgical interventions, length of stay in pediatric emergency department, hospitalization, or intensive care unit admission and mortality. The data of curfew periods was compared with its control periods by using Mann- Whitney U test, t-test or chi-square. The statistical significance was defined as p≤0.05.Results:We enrolled 744 patients. There was no significant difference in age, gender, time elapsed from the accident, ratio of hospitalization between curfew and control periods. The crucial reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within the chicken intestinal microbiome poses a serious threat to both animal and human health. In China, the overuse of antibiotics has significantly contributed to the proliferation of ARGs in the chicken intestinal microbiome, which is a serious concern. However, there has been relatively little research on the diversity of resistance genes in the chicken intestinal microbiome since the implementation of the National Pilot Work Program for Action to Reduce the Use of Veterinary Antimicrobial Drugs in China. The objective of this study was to analyze the diversity of antibiotic resistance genes carried by the chicken intestinal microbiome in both standard farms (SFs), which implement antibiotic reduction and passed national acceptance, and nonstandard farms (NSFs), which do not implement antibiotic reductions, in Hebei Province. Fresh fecal samples of broiler chickens were collected from SFs (n = 4) and NSF (n = 1) and analyzed using high-throughput qPCR technology. Our findings revealed that all five farms exhibited a wide range of highly abundant ARGs, with a total of 201 ARGs and 7 MGEs detected in all fecal samples. The dominant ARGs identified conferred resistance to aminoglycosides, macrolide-lincosamide-streptomycin B (MLSB), and tetracycline antibiotics. Cellular protection mechanisms were found to be the primary resistance mechanism for these ARGs. The analysis of the co-occurrence network demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the abundance of MGEs and ARGs. The SF samples showed a significantly lower relative abundance of certain ARGs than the NSF samples (p < 0.05). The results of this study show that the abundance of ARGs demonstrated a downward trend after the implementation of the National Pilot Work Program for Action to Reduce the Usage of Veterinary Antimicrobial Drugs in Hebei Province, China. The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing COVID-19, has spread across the globe. To limit the spread of COVID-19, the Italian government imposed various restrictions (lockdowns). These restrictions had an impact on the flow of patients accessing hospital care. Our aim in this study was to analyze the impact of lockdowns on the epidemiology of patients suffering from hand trauma. Our work analyzed the variation in the number and characteristics of hand trauma patients during the lockdown and half-lockdowns in 2020 compared to the same periods in the previous and subsequent years. In 2020, during the lockdown period, 107 patients were treated by our department for hand trauma, amounting to a 2% increase compared to the average number of patients treated in the pre-pandemic period. In 2020, during the half-lockdown period, 158 patients were treated, amounting to a 6.8% increase in comparison to the pre-pandemic period. During the lockdown period in Italy, the flow of patients suffering from hand trauma referred to our hub center remained stable. Given the restrictions imposed by the lockdown, we expected a consequent reduction in the number of work-related injuries, which did occur, while there was a surprising increase in the number of traffic-related injuries. Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the whole world in terms of health, social life, and economics. In this study, the frequency of pediatric home accidents in the second wave of the pandemic, where social isolation continues, was investigated. Material and Methods: This is a single center, retrospective study. We evaluated cases of patients under the age of 18 who were admitted to the hospital due to a home accident between November 1, 2020 and January 31, 2021 (the second wave of the pandemic). Results were compared with the patients who were admitted to the same emergency department within the same period of the previous year. Researchers examined home accidents in three groups: crashfall- incision (1), intoxication-foreign body ingestion (2), and burns (3). The patients were divided into four age groups: 0-1 year, 2-5 years, 6-11 years, and 12-17 years. Results: The study was completed with 607 cases pre-Covid and 683 cases post-Covid. The median age was 44.4 month (17-57) from 2019-2020 and 49.1 month (18-64) from 2020-2021 (p=0.154). The outpatient and sequela-free discharges were more frequent in both periods (p=0.046). In the second wave of the pandemic, there was an increase in burns and fall related admissions compared to before the pandemic (p<0.001). All types of home accidents were frequently detected at the ages of five years and younger. Conclusion: In this study, analyzing the second wave of the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic times, Researchers noted a decrease in the number of emergency admissions and an increase in admissions related to home accidents. Background: Worldwide, about 20-25 million people are affected by sickle cell disease (SCD), with 60% of patients living in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite recent therapeutic advancements resulting in improved life expectancy among SCD patients, the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) and cervical lesions have not been studied in women with SCD. We determined the prevalence of hr-HPV and cervical lesions among women with SCD and recommended strategies for reducing cervical cancer incidence in this cohort. Methods: Through the mPharma 10,000 Women Initiative, women with SCD attending routine visits at the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics SCD clinic were screened by trained nurses. Screening was performed via concurrent MA-6000 hr-HPV DNA testing and enhanced visual assessment (EVA) mobile colposcopy from mobileODT. Results: Among 168 participants screened (mean age, 43.0 years), the overall prevalence rates of hr-HPV infection and cervical lesions were 28.6% (95% CI, 21.7-35.4) and 3.6% (95% CI, 0.8-6.4), respectively. The hr-HPV prevalence rates stratified by haemoglobin genotype were 29.4% (95% CI, 19.7-39.1) and 28.6% (95% CI, 18.5-38.7) for genotypes SS and SC, respectively. None of the five women with the SF genotype tested hr-HPV positive, and the only patient with Sbthal genotype tested hr-HPV positive. Two women were EVA 'positive' but hr-HPV negative, whereas four were EVA positive and hr-HPV positive. Exploratory analysis revealed no significant associations between hr-HPV positivity and age, education level, marital status or parity. Conclusion: In the absence of a comprehensive national cervical screening programme aimed at including women with SCD as a special population, cervical cancer may increase in frequency among SCD patients. Background and Objectives: Accidental home injuries among older adults are increasing globally, but reporting is limited. This study aims to establish foundational data for program development and policies to prevent accidental injuries at home in older adults by using data on the occurrence of accidental injuries at home and analyzing the risk factors of mortality due to accidental injuries among adults aged 65 years and older. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study used data from the community-based Severe Trauma Survey in South Korea. This study identified general, injury-related, and treatment-related characteristics of older adults who were transported to the emergency department with accidental injuries at home. Single-variable and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for mortality after injury. Results: The majority of older adults in this study who experienced accidental injuries at home were aged 75 to 84 (42.8%) and female (52.8%), with 1465 injured from falls and slips (68.0%). Risk factors for mortality included older age (≥85 years) (ORs 2.25, 95% CI 1.47–3.45), male sex (ORs 1.60, 95% CI 1.15–2.20), mechanism of injury (falls or slips vs. contact injury, ORs 6.76, 95% CI 3.39–13.47; airway obstruction vs. contact injury, ORs 13.96, 95% CI 6.35–30.71), higher severity (moderate vs. mild, ORs 2.56, 95% CI 1.45–4.54; severe vs. mild, ORs 12.24, 95% CI 6.48–23.12; very severe vs. mild, ORs 67.95, 95% CI 38.86–118.81), and receiving a blood transfusion (ORs 2.14, 95% CI 1.24–3.67). Conclusions: Based on these findings, the home and community environments where older adults live should be inspected and monitored, and in-home accidental injury prevention strategies should be developed tailored to the characteristics of older adults’ risk factors and their injury-related characteristics.

Background: Globally, 830,000 children die due to home accidents worldwide corresponding to 2000 deaths per day. Furthermore, Uganda has an under-five child mortality rate of 90 deaths per 1000 live births with 5% attributed to home accidents mainly falls and burns. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors contributing to home accidents in children after five years in Bulwa zone, Lubaga division, Kampala District. Methodology: The study used a descriptive cross-sectional study design that involved quantitative data collection methods. A sample size of 30 was selected using a simple random sampling method. Structured questionnaires were used to collect that were analyzed using the Microsoft Excel program 2016 for presentation into tables and figures. Results: The findings on caretaker-related factors included; 70% never had time to watch children while playing, 60% disagreed with restricting children while playing and 68.8% reported a history of home accidents in the children while drunk. Child-related factors ranged from 93.3% reported that gender contributes to a home accident with all reported males being the most affected gender, 33.3% reported that their children engaged in active games like football and running and 66.7% children had not been trained about prevention of home accidents. Environmental factors were; that 53.3% had cemented floors, 36.7% had dogs at home, and 70%) were cooking on the veranda. Conclusion: The study concluded that caretaker-related factors, child-related factors, and environmental factors were contributing to home accidents. Recommendation: Training children on the prevention of home accidents should be done and also encouraging mothers to restrict and monitor their children from engaging in risky activities.

(1) Background: Ankle fractures are common injuries that typically require surgical treatment. Complications may arise, leading to reinterventions with poor recovery and reduced quality of life for patients. The aim of this study was to determine the number of patients who underwent surgical reintervention for ankle fractures, characteristics, and associated factors. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze the number of patients requiring surgical intervention for ankle fractures at General Hospital Zone No1 IMSS in Colima over a period of two years. The age, gender, comorbidities, laterality, cause of surgical reintervention, Weber classification, and elapsed time to reintervention were analyzed. (3) Results: A total of 33 patients were included in this study, of whom 63.3% were male, ranging in age from 18 to 51 years old. The predominant Danis–Weber classification for both sexes was suprasyndesmotic fracture (Type C). No established relationship was found between comorbidities and surgical reintervention; however, a significant relationship was observed between home accidents and the need for reintervention. Background: Falling is a common aging-associated problem. Over one-third of older adults have experienced at least one episode of falling, and its prevalence increases with age. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the effect of fall-prevention multimedia training on the fear of falling, home safety, and the quality of life in older adults presenting to a designated healthcare center. Methods: Design: Parallel, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial. Setting: The orthopedic outpatient clinic of Dena Hospital in Shiraz, Fars province, Iran. Participants: 100 older adults, including 50 randomly allocated to the intervention group (multimedia training) and 50 to the control group (standard teaching) by permuted block randomization. Measurements: For data collection, a demographic information form, the fear of falling inventory, the home falls and accidents screening tool (HOME FAST), and LEIPAD (an instrument for assessing the quality of life in older adults) were completed before and three months after the intervention. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: The comparison of the pre-and post-intervention scores of the three assessed outcomes between the study groups showed a significant difference between the mean scores of home safety before and after the intervention (P < 0.001) in the intervention group; however, there were no significant differences in the scores of fear of falling (P = 0.30) and quality of life (P = 0.32). In the control group, there were no statistically significant differences in the mean scores of the three outcomes before and after the intervention. Calculating the standardized mean difference revealed the significant effect of the intervention on home safety (Cohen's d = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.43 - 1.3). Conclusions: Given the potential effectiveness of multimedia training in the improvement of older adults' fear of falling and quality of life, especially concerning home safety, this type of training should be emphasized in future educational programs. Burn pain is known as the most difficult type of pain to manage. In order to improve patient outcomes, nurses must be aware of burn pain and the conditions that affect it. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of burn-specific pain anxiety on pain experienced by adult outpatients with burns during burn wound care. This was a single-center, prospective, and descriptive study. The study was conducted with 60 adult outpatients with burns between March 2021 and April 2021 in a burn centers' outpatient service in Ankara. Personal information form, burn-specific pain anxiety scale, numerical rating scale, and verbal category scale were used for data collection. The mean age of the patients was 38.50 ± 14.27 years, and 53.33% patients were females. The primary cause of burns was home accidents (80%), and patients generally suffered from scalding-type burns (73.33%). This study demonstrated that the patients reported high pain anxiety associated with burns (59.85 ± 15.71), the mean pain score experienced during wound care was 6.33 ± 2.14 and the pain was primarily classified as disturbing (35%) based on the verbal category scale. In this study, it was found that burn-specific pain anxiety affects the pain experienced during burn wound care in adults receiving outpatient treatment. Hence, nurses should provide effective pain management to patients with burn injuries. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are known to experience emotional hypo/hypersensitivity, aside from exhibiting restricted and repetitive behaviors. These behaviors prevent them from perceiving and simultaneously responding to environmental stimuli, meaning that they may not notice potential hazards. Children with ASD are in the risk group for home accidents, being unaware of the hazards, and are therefore open to environmental risks. The aim of this study is to determine the needs of families that have children with ASD for home safety skills and to test the effectiveness of the training program prepared. Qualitative, quantitative, and quantitative levels were carried out sequentially in this study conducted with a multilevel mixed design. The findings of the qualitative and quantitative levels revealed that the families were content with taking measures regarding only home accidents, and they were insufficient in providing education. In the last level, the program was effective in the experimental group, and the awareness of the families increased in the interviews. The program, which also aims to prevent home accidents to which children with special needs are exposed, can be applied to children with and without developmental disability through instructive booklets, animations, and videos. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of training given to mothers about home accidents and safety measures. The study, which was planned with the convergent parallel mixed method model, was carried out with mothers residing in Mamak District of Ankara Province. In the quantitative dimension of the study, a single group pre-test-post-test design model was used, and in the qualitative part, phenomenological case design was used. As a result of the study, it was determined that the post-test mean scores of the mothers were significantly higher than the pre-test mean scores, and the knowledge of the mothers about home accidents increased at a high rate after the training. Based on the results obtained from the study, suggestions were made for carrying out dissemination studies for home accidents, training fathers for home accidents, and making home visits in training. Objectives: No study evaluating home accident (HAs) cases who applied to the pediatric emergency department (PED) during a pandemic in Turkey. Whether the pandemic caused an increase in the number of presented to PED was investigated. Methods: The study was a retrospective cohort study. Applications in a similar quarter in 2019 and 2020 were compared. Results: There were 700 and 597 admissions for specified reasons during the specified period in 2019 and 2020, respectively. In 2020, one out of every five (24.43%); in 2019, one out of every ten children (9.46%) was evaluated as HAs. The male/female ratios were similar (p=0.520). The median age in 2020 (36 months) was significantly higher than that in 2019 (33 months) (p=0.010). Percentages of falls, gastric/intestinal foreign bodies, and penetrating stab injuries were significantly higher in those in 2020 (p<0.001). Significant differences were also found regarding diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. During the specified period in 2019, 623 patients (89.5%) were discharged from the PED. The rate of discharge in 2020 (84.9%) was significantly lower. Also, there were considerably more hospitalizations in other wards in 2020 than in 2019 (3.7% vs. 1.0%) (p=0.004). Conclusions: The Covid-19 pandemic caused an increase in the number of HAs cases presented to the PED relative to all hospital admissions. The most common type of accident was falls, as in the non-pandemic period. The pandemic caused delays in accessing healthcare services, especially for critically ill patients, more frequent hospitalizations, and a decrease in the rate of discharge from the PED. Introduction: Home accidents means accidents that happen in the house or its surroundings, and are the main cause of death and disability of children. Risk assessment is an organized method to identify, predict and reduce risk to an acceptable level. Therefore, our goal in this study is to identify and evaluate domestic hazards in the homes of Yazd city for children under seven years old. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 322 home accidents were identified in a cluster method from different areas of Yazd city. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire whose validity and reliability were measured by experts (α=0.764). After completing the questionnaires, the collected data were entered into SPSS software version 20 and were analyzed by descriptive tests, ANOVA and T-TEST in confidence level of 95% Results: The most injuries caused by hazards are cuts, bone fractures/dislocations and contusion with a frequency of 17%, 14.8%, and 9.6%, respectively. The highest risk assessment code belongs to minor risks with a frequency of 39.76%, and the lowest frequency is for critical risks (3.17%). Aim:There have been no national and international assessment tools for home accidents, and the majority of the studies evaluating the awareness of home accidents have been conducted using questionnaires.Methods:The study was conducted methodologically. A Home Accidents Awareness Scale for Mothers was developed by taking expert opinions in the item pool study, and a validity-reliability study was conducted after the preliminary application. The data were collected at Karaagac Family Health Centers in Turkey between July and October 2019. The population consisted of mothers who met the inclusion criteria and came to the family health center for any reason. The data were collected using a Demographic Information Form and the Home Accidents Awareness Scale for Mothers. Validity and reliability analyses were used to assess the data.Results:The home Accidents Awareness Scale for Mothers contains 55 items and four subscales (awareness of falls, burns, drowning and poisoning, cutting and drilling tool ınjuries). Background: Firearm injuries are the leading cause of mortality among children and adolescents 1–19 years old in the USA. Many prior studies on this topic lack detailed information about the circumstances of the firearm fatalities and include decedents and shooters of all ages. This study characterizes firearm fatalities in the USA in which children < 15 years old unintentionally killed themselves or another child. Methods: Ten years of data from the National Violent Death Reporting System were analyzed. Unintentional firearm fatalities among children were reviewed to identify characteristics of decedents and the children who inflicted the deaths, their relationship, and circumstances of the deaths. There were 279 firearm fatalities during the study period involving children < 15 years old who unintentionally killed themselves or another child < 15 years old. Results: Most victims were male (81.4%), and 40.9% were 2–4 years old. Most incidents (64.0%) occurred at the victim's residence, and in 80.9% of cases the firearm owner was a relative of the shooter. In the < 5-year age group, 80.3% of injuries were self-inflicted, and in the 10–14-year age group, 32.3% of shooters were a friend of the victim. Conclusion: This study highlights that children in the USA are shooting themselves and each other in their own homes, and often accessing firearms owned by family members. These findings can be used to guide prevention efforts, such as child access prevention laws, to reduce the number of pediatric firearm fatalities in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Physical traumas are one of the important causes of mortality and morbidity in childhood. Permanent disabilities resulting from traumas constitute significant losses for the individual and society. Identifying the causes and severity of traumas are important in raising awareness and preventability. In our study by presenting the multicenter cases with forensic assessment at the end of the wound healing process, we aimed to determine the causes of traumas, traumatic lesions, trauma severity, and permanent damage, and offer solutions. Material and Methods: 1,418 pediatric trauma cases admitted to the Forensic Medicine Department of Atatürk University between the 1st of January 2016 and 31st December 2018 were analyzed in terms of age, gender, causes of trauma, traumatic lesion, the severity of the injury, and the status of permanent disability. The severity of trauma was determined by the Injury Severity Score and the status of permanent disability was determined according to the Special Needs Report for Children. Results: 77.2% (n=1,095) of physical trauma cases were male and 22.8% (n=323) were female. 86.6% (n=1,256) of the traumas were blunt, 8.3% (n=118) were penetrating and 3.1% (n=44) were due to the thermal injury. 70% (n=879) of blunt traumas were beating and 24% (n=307) were traffic accidents. It was found that major injuries, bone fractures, and life-threatening injuries in blunt traumas occur more frequently due to falls and home accidents mostly in infancy and playing age. Disability was determined in 2.1% (n=30) of physical trauma cases. It was found that permanent damages are the dysfunctions caused by extremity and peripheral nerve problems which occur most frequently due to traffic accidents (n=20). Conclusion: According to our findings, the most common causes of major injuries in childhood are falls and home accidents. Traffic accidents are the most common cause of acquired disability. Electrocution injuries are divided into high (HVI) and low voltage injuries (LVI). The aim of this study was to examine the sociodemographic data of cases where autopsy was performed because of death originating from electric shock, together with the clinical characteristics, scene of incident, electrical entry-exit wound localizations, pathological effects of electric shock on the body, and cause of death. A total of 4210 autopsies were retrospectively reviewed, and 49 had died from electrocution. The mean age of the cases was 29.2 ± 16.04 years and 87.8% were males and 12.2% were females, 49% of the cases were the result of HVI and 51% the result of LVI. The presence of electrical entry and/or exit wounds were significantly higher in electrocution injuries due to home accidents than work accidents (p < 0.005). There was no statistically significant difference between the deaths caused by the direct effect of electric shock and those who died with LVI and HVI. The deaths of all the cases were accidental in origin, with no suicide or homicide. Deaths due to electrocution due to home or workplace accidents can be determined by examining the crime scene, witness statements, autopsy and histopathological findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Home accidents can cause serious injuries, disabilities, and deaths. Approximately 40 million people were treated in hospitals annually because of injuries occurring in homes, and these injuries were responsible for approximately 76% of preventable deaths. The aims of this study are to compare the home accidents in the one-year period during the pandemic and the home accidents in the one-year period before the pandemic, and to reveal how the home accidents are affected in which part of the home and in which types of injur ies. A retrospective study was made of the records of patients injured in home accidents between pre -pandemic and pandemic one-year periods. The patients were classified according to age groups, gender, season, day and time of the home accident, accident type, part of the home, trauma localization and type, and severity of injuries. While 46.5% of the 581 injured patients were before the pandemic, 53.5% were in the pandemic period. The injuries increased as the number of households staying at home increased compared to the pre-pandemic period. Likewise, there was a significant increase in the number of falls from balconies and windows during the pandemic period. It is still not possible to make a definite prediction about the course of the pandemic. Abstract Background We proposed to analyze thoroughly the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown (CL) in changes of profiles and in trend of the domestic accidents (DAs) in children. Methods This was a single experience, cross-sectional study conducted at the emergency department (ED) of III trauma center. We enrolled children under 18 years admitted to ED with a diagnosis of DAs comparing the CL period from 10th March 2020 to 4th May 2020 with the same period of the previous year,10th March 2019 to 4th May 2019. Results In CL period, the cumulative incidence of ED visits for DAs increased from 86.88 to 272.13 per 1,000 children and the cumulative incidence of hospitalizations for DAs increased from 409.72 to 534.48 per 1,000 children. Background: In the last two decades, there have been major improvements in the trauma system in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). We aimed to study the changes in the incidence, type, severity, and outcome of trauma of hospitalized child-bearing age women in Al-Ain City, UAE, during that time. Methods: Data from two separate trauma registries of Al-Ain Hospital, which were prospectively collected from March 2003 to March 2006 and January 2014 to December 2017, were analyzed retrospectively. All women aged 15–49 years were studied. The two periods were compared. Results: Trauma incidence of hospitalized child-bearing age women was reduced by 47% during the second period. There were no significant differences in the mechanism of injury between the two periods. Road traffic collision was the main cause of injury (44% and 42%, respectively) followed by fall down (26.1% and 30.8%, respectively). The location of injury was significantly different (p = 0.018), with a strong trend of more home injuries in the second period (52.8% compared with 44%, p = 0.06). There was a strong statistical trend of mild traumatic brain injury (GCS 13–15) in the second period (p = 0.067, Fisher's Exact test). Those who had normal GCS of 15 were significantly higher in the second period compared with those in the first period (95.3% compared with 86.4%, p < 0.001, Fisher's Exact test) despite having more anatomical injury severity of the head (AIS 2 (1–5) compared with 1 (1–5), p = 0.025). The NISS was significantly higher in the second period (median (range) NISS 5 (1–45) compared with 4 (1–75), p = 0.02). Despite that, mortality was the same (1.6% compared with 1.7%, p = 0.99) while the length of hospital stay was significantly less (mean (SD) 5.6 (6.3) days compared with 10.6 (13.6) days, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The incidence of trauma in hospitalized child-bearing-age women was reduced by 47% over the last 15 years. Road traffic collisions and falls are the leading cause of injury in our setting. Home injuries increased over time. The mortality remained stable despite the increased severity of injured patients. Accidents that occur in the home or its surroundings are called home accidents. Our aim in this study was to identify the causes of admissions due to home accidents and to assess the awareness and attitudes of mothers. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in the emergency departments of Çobanbey and Azaz Vatan hospitals. Eighty-one mothers that have an average age of 30.02±7.56 years participated in the study. 53.1% (n=43) of the children admitted due to home accidents were males and the number of applicants in the 0-6 years age group was 54 (65.8%). The most common reason for admission was falls (53.1%, n=43), followed by burns (21%, n=17). It was found that the majority kept toxic substances such as rat poison and pesticides out of the reach of children (98.8%, n=80), warned their children to stay away from water wells (92.6%, n=75), and kept ignitable substances such as matches and lighters out of the reach of children (90.1%, n=73). In addition, 92.6% (n=75) left a teapot on the stove, 88.9% (n=72) left electrical appliances in the outlet, and 80.2% (n=65) reported that children could light the stove by themselves. The mean score calculated in the questionnaire on mothers' awareness and attitude toward home accidents was 15.44±3.40. It is very necessary to carry out studies on health systems with national and international cooperation in victimized regions such as the northwest of Syria and to inform families about accident risks and safety measures.
