We present experiments on word segmentation for Akkadian cuneiform, an ancient writing system and a language used for about 3 millennia in the ancient Near East. To our best knowledge, this is the first study of this kind applied to either the Akkadian language or the cuneiform writing system. As a logosyllabic writing system, cuneiform structurally resembles Eastern Asian writing systems, so, we employ word segmentation algorithms originally developed for Chinese and Japanese. We describe results of rule-based algorithms, dictionary-based algorithms, statistical and machine learning approaches. Our results may indicate possible promising steps in cuneiform word segmentation that can create and improve natural language processing in this area.

Softwarerezensionen sind daher ein wesentlicher Bestandteil einer Wissenschaftspraxis, die ihre Methoden offenlegt und kritisch reflektiert. Bislang aber erscheinen noch wenige Rezensionen. Der Workshop soll Interessierten einen Einstieg bieten und somit zur Verbreitung und Anerkennung dieses wichtigen wissenschaftlichen Formats beitragen. Gemeinschaftlich mit den Teilnehmer_innen möchten wir am Beispiel kleiner, überschaubarer Tools alle Arbeitsschritte einer Rezension von Forschungssoftware am praktischen Beispiel durchführen. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Kennenlernen und Anwenden von Aspekten, mit denen eine Software besprochen werden kann. Rezensionen von Software fragen ganz unterschiedliche Kompetenzen ab und sind daher besonders gut und effizient als Team zu bearbeiten. Im Idealfall entsteht während des Workshops genug Material, um unterstützt von den Workshopanbieter_innen ohne umfangreiche Nacharbeiten eine Rezension zur Veröffentlichung einzureichen." Linked Pipes: A little minion for reproducible research Florian Thiery, RGZM; Timo Homburg, University of Applied Sciences Mainz At Linked Pasts IV in Mainz 2018, the Linked Pasts Network had a session on "Linked Data Tools and Pipelines": As a result, the Linked Pipes Working Group was born. The goal: creating so-called Linked Pipes as semantically modelled pipelines for (not only) LOD related workflows using the help of the WWW, and existing research software solutions such as JavaScript based little minions. Currently Linked Pipes are developed by the Research Squirrel Engineers Network (Timo Homburg and Florian Thiery), and is part of the Pelagios Network Annotation Activity as well as the Linked Pasts Network. Digital Workflows (as known as Linked Pipes) exist in mind, but researchers should visualise and semantically model them using well-known ontologies such as the Provenance Ontology (PROV-O) and the Dataflow Ontology (DFD) to create a part for reproducible research. Additionally, research workflows are usually not published in interoperable formats, such as RDF. It would be an improvement for archaeology if researchers could document Liked Pipes e.g. for a research publication and share the workflow with colleagues. Linked Pipes consists of tools, which can be easily part of the so-called Linked Open Data Cloud and therefore interlinked with other tools by using Wikidata [1] where you can create or edit existing items (research tools) with the property “used by” (P1535) “Linked Pipes” (Q73897190), e.g. SPARQLing Unicorn QGIS Plugin (Q74005133), Recogito (Q74692524), Annotoriuos (Q110585388). Linked Pipes should be reusable once defined in Linked Data. Creating a “Linked Pipe Registry” will help to share Linked Pipes in a central repository. But how? a) a registry file in a git repository which links to Pipe RDF files published elsewhere save, e.g. Zenodo -> DOI or Solid Pod -> access control, and b) visualisation of these pipes on demand in JavaScript in a Linked Pipe Viewer [2]. This minion talk focuses on the Linked Pipe Viewer published on Github [3]. The viewer is based on JavScript and the flowchart.js library. Currently this framework does not support the “Yourdon / DeMarco” notation, as DFD visualising backbone. It is splitted into two online sessions where the community may get an introduction, try out modelling linked pipes, report challenges and problems, discuss solutions and plan the next steps. A particular emphasis should be given to the incorporation and reuse of related Linked Data vocabularies for software workflow descriptions, a connection of linked pipes to traditional modes of publication (publication workflow identifiers) and the description of provenance of data and an adequate representation of such pipes to all audiences. The results should be implemented, sketched, discussed and finally published as a working paper for documenting data workflows. Cuneiform in the LOD cloud: Connecting 2D and 3D representations of philological objects with linguistic concepts: Poster for the event LinkedPasts VII On this poster, we elaborate on an ontology model which connects 2D and 3D representations of cuneiform tablets with its textual representations and annotations on either of those mediums.

This study reports on adolescents’ experiences as exchange students in an international exchange program. Based on a literature review and multivariate analysis of original on-line survey data collected from 408 students from 40 countries that had spent a year in one out of 37 destinations, it is concluded that the student’s language proficiency and perceived social support during the exchange impacted students’ wellbeing during the exchange, while cultural distance between the student’s home country and destination nor the student’s adventurousness as a personality trait had an impact. It is concluded that the students’ social support and ability to interact during the exchange play an important role in enabling exchange students to reap the benefits of international and intercultural exchange in their formative years.

Motiviert durch zahlreiche Diskussionen rund um den zunehmenden Einsatz von Forschungssoftware im Bereich der Archäologie werden in diesem Beitrag Aspekte zu deren Rezension skizziert. Die Bewertung von Software ist ein komplexes Thema, da deren Einsatzgebiet und ihr Entwicklungskontext einen erheblichen Einfluss auf Forschungsergebnisse haben. Hinzu kommen unterschiedlichste Anwendungsfälle von z. B. Studierenden, die rasch eine Übungsaufgabe lösen, bis hin zu Projektentwicklern, die ein Softwarepaket für den Dauerbetrieb in eine bestehende Infrastruktur integrieren müssen. Obwohl an der Erstellung dieser ersten Version eines Leitfadens paritätisch Beiträge aus der Archäologie und der angewandten Informatik eingeflossen sind, liegt der Fokus auf Beurteilungskriterien von Software im Anwendungsbereich der Archäologien. Ein Ziel dieses Impulses für Softwarerezensionen ist es, künftige Rezensentinnen und Rezensenten für die Komplexität der Beurteilung von Software zu sensibilisieren. Eine Softwarerezension soll dem archäologischen Fachpublikum eine rasche, kritische und – auch den Entwicklerinnen und Entwicklern gegenüber – faire Beurteilung von Software ermöglichen. Zu den vorrangigen Empfehlungen gehört die Beschreibung des Kontextes, in dem die Rezension verfasst wurde bzw. die gestellten Anforderungen für bestimmte Anwendungsfälle. Zusätzlich soll eine kurze tabellarische Übersicht eine rasche Einschätzung der technischen, finanziellen und rechtlichen Aspekte ermöglichen. Motivated by numerous discussions around the increasing use of research software in the field of archaeology, this article outlines some aspects for its review. The evaluation of software is a complex topic, since its field of application and development context has a considerable influence. In addition, there are many very different use cases, ranging from students wanting a quick solution for an exercise to project developers, who have to integrate a software package into an existing infrastructure for continuous operation. Although this discussion paper is based on equal contributions from archaeology and applied computer science, the focus is on evaluation criteria for software in the field of archaeology. A major goal of this paper is to alert future reviewers to the complexity of software evaluation. A software review should enable a professional archaeological audience to make a quick, critical and fair, to both the product and the developers assessment of the software. Priority recommendations include a description of the context in which the review was written and the requirements for specific use cases. In addition, a short tabular overview should enable a quick assessment of the technical, financial and legal aspects. Die Linked Open Data Cloud bietet seit vielen Jahren große Datenrepositorien im WWW an, die für verschiedene Zwecke von unterschiedlichen Communities genutzt werden können. Die Stärke von Linked Open Data (LOD) ist hierbei die Verknüpfung von Informationen aus unterschiedlichsten dezentral gehosteten Wissensdomänen. Für die Geoinformatik haben sich beispielsweise community-basierende Datenrepositorien wieWikidata,LinkedGeoDataoderDBpediagebildet. Zudem bieten Gazetteer-Repositorien wieGeonamesoderPleiadesfür den zeitgeschichtlichen Raum, aber auch administrative Provider wie derOrdnance Survey UKundOrdnance Survey Ireland, ihre Geodaten als LOD an. Leider haben all diese Ressourcen in der Geo-Community bisher leider nur niederrangige Bedeutung erlangt. Den Grund dafür sehen wir in einem nicht vorhandenen Support von GIS Applikationen für die Verarbeitung von LOD.TriplestoresundSPARQLwerden zur Zeit weder vonGISSoftware,GeoServerImplementierungen oderOGC-Services unterstützt. Die Linked Data SerialisierungGeoJSON-LDbirgt zwar aufgrund einiger noch offener Issues Herausforderungen, wird allerdings nicht oft wie seine ‘unsemantische Schwester’GeoJSON, in Applikationen genutzt. Genau hier setzt dasSPARQLing Unicorn QGIS Pluginan, welches die Ausführung von Linked Data Anfragen in (Geo)SPARQL an ausgewählte Triplestores und geofähigen SPARQL Endpoints ermöglicht. Die Ergebnisse werden in GeoJSON Layer konvertiert, sodass sie direkt in QGIS nutzbar sind. Für die Zukunft soll dasSPARQLing Unicorn Pluginmit extrahierten Konzepten ausgewählter Ontologien Benutzern die Möglichkeit bieten, einfache Abfragen wie “Gib mir alle Flughäfen in BOUNDINGBOX mit direkt verbundenen Relationen” oder “Gib mir alle Flughäfen in LAND_X” automatisch zu generieren und somit das Laden dynamischer Inhalte der Datenrepositorien erleichtern. Es ist erwünscht, dass die Geocommunity aktiv an der (Weiter-)Entwicklung des Plugins teilnimmt und so die Welt der LOD im Geokontext weiter bekannt macht. Dazu steht der Quellcode frei aufGithubzur Erweiterung zur Verfügung. Der Vortrag gibt einen Einstieg in die Modellierung von Linked Open (Geo-)Data, in die Abfragesprache SPARQL, deren Erweiterung GeoSPARQL, bestehende (Geo-)Ressourcen in der Linked Open Data Cloud, sowie die Funktionsweise desSPARQLing Unicorn QGIS Plugins, dessen zukünftige Erweiterungen und aktuelle Entwicklungen in der Erweiterung der jeweiligen Standards. Geodesists are part of a global digital connected world: the cloud. We practice Industry 4.0 and Spatial Information Management by using cross linked machines, people and data. Moreover, open source software, open geodata and open access are becoming increasingly important. Linked Open Data (LOD) must be published in order to provide free open geodata in interoperable formats, as part of the Semantic Web. As Smart Surveyors we have to control this process and implement tools as well as conceptional solutions for spatial data processing technologies. Some administrative agencies like the Ordnance Survey Ireland, provide geodata as LOD, interlinked with several resources in the World Wide Web. Furthermore, community driven volunteered databases such as Wikidata and Open Street Map (OSM) are continuously growing as they become enriched with source information and linked to related information in other official databases. The combination of these repositories, as well as other databases of natural sciences, cultural heritage (CH), etc. build a Linked Open Data Cloud containing Geospatial Big Data. However, this data is semantically structured and standardised by the W3C, so it would be easy to implement tools for GIS applications e.g. QGIS. In these days, world’s CH is being destroyed as a result of wars, sea- level rise, floods and other natural disasters by climate change. Several transnational initiatives try to preserve our CH via 3D digitalisation. In addition, volunteered databases like OSM and Wikidata allows everyone to easily preserve CH items in a digital way like LOD. As best practice for preserving data serves the `Ogi-Ogam Project` with the aim to show an easy volunteered approach to model Irish `Ogam Stones` containing Ogham inscriptions in Wikidata and interlink them with spatial information in OSM and (geo)resources in the web. The project allows the preservation of CH data, involves volunteers, creates digital LOD and interlinks with geodata in the cloud. The paper will present how easy it is to control the process of creating a Wikidata data model, inserting data, publishing as LOD, querying, implementing plugins, e.g. SPARQL Unicorn, and use them in third-party applications such as `R` or `QGIS` for statistical analysis. The cloud will continue to grow in the upcoming years as other interested parties, around the world begin to use this approach to preserve their local CH items, in a digital way. It will therefore be crucial for the geospatial community to take an active part of this technical evolution.
