- Abstract
Observations of bulk plasma rotation in radio frequency (RF) heated JET discharges are reported. This study is concentrated on RF heated L-mode plasmas. In particular, the toroidal rotation profiles in plasmas heated by ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) waves and lower hybrid (LH) waves have been analysed. It is the first time that rotation profiles in JET plasmas with LH waves have been measured in dedicated discharges. It is found that the toroidal plasma rotation in the outer region of the plasmas is in the co-current direction irrespective of the heating scenario. An interesting feature is that the toroidal rotation profile appears to be hollow in many discharges at low plasma current, but a low current in itself does not seem to be a sufficient condition for finding such profiles. Fast ion transport and finite orbit width effects are mechanisms that could explain hollow rotation profiles. This possibility has been investigated by numerical simulations of the torque on the bulk plasma due to fast ICRF accelerated ions. The obtained torque is used in a transport equation for the toroidal momentum density to estimate the effect on the thermal bulk plasma rotation profile., QC 20100525

- Abstract
Perfluorinated alkyl surfactants (PFAS) were investigated in tissues and organs of the common guillemot (Uria aalge) from the Baltic Sea. Concentrations of 11 perfluorinated carboxylates, four perfluorinated sulfonates, and perfluorooctane sulfonamide were determined in egg, liver, kidney, and muscle of adult guillemot, as well as in liver from chicks, all sampled in 1989. Additionally, whole herring homogenates from 2005 were analyzed, herring comprising a large part of guillemot’s diet. Quantifiable concentrations of PFAS were found in all samples. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was predominant, followed by perfluorotridecanoate (PFTriDA) and perfluoroundecanoate (PFUnDA). The median concentration of PFOS was highest in eggs (325 ng/g wet weight (w wt)) followed by chick liver (309 ng/g w wt), kidney (127 ng/g w wt), adult liver (121 ng/g w wt), and muscle (14 ng/g w wt). Comparatively low levels of PFOS were found in herring, leaving a blurred picture of uptake routes. PFAS concentrations in livers of male and female guillemots did not differ significantly. Some PFAS showed higher concentrations in eggs than in female livers. The ratio of levels in egg/female liver, indicating mother-to-egg transfer capacity, increased with increasing PFAS chain length. PFOS showed a higher tendency for transfer than carboxylates of carbon chain lengths C9−C13.

- Abstract
Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have recently been identified as ubiquitous environmental contaminants. Although they have been produced for 50 years, little is known about when they first appeared in the environment and how their concentrations have changed over time, particularly in response to the phase-out-of PFOS, which began in 2000. In this study temporal trends in the concentrations of PFOS and PFOA in the Baltic Sea marine environment were measured using archived guillemot eggs. Samples collected from Stora Karlso (Sweden) between 1968 and 2003 were received from an environmental specimen bank and concentrations of PFOS and PFOA were analyzed using HPLC coupled to ESI-MS/MS. PFOA was not detected in any of the samples (LOD 3 ng/g), but there was an almost 30-fold increase in PFOS concentrations in the guillemot eggs during the time period, from 25 ng/g in 1968 to 614 ng/g in 2003 (wet weight). Regression analysis indicated a significant trend, increasing on average between 7 and 11% per year. A sharp peak in PFOS concentrations was observed in 1997 followed by decreasing levels up to 2002, but this cannot be linked to the PFOS phase-out, which occurred at the end of this period.

Experiments have been carried out on JET aimed at studying rotation in RF heated plasmas with low external momentum input. Both plasmas with Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency (ICRF) heating and Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) have been investigated. The rotation profiles are measured by Charge Exchange recombination spectroscopy, using short diagnostic Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) pulses. Moreover, the temporal evolution of the central rotation could in some cases be deduced from MHD activity. While most of the measurements were focussed on ICRF heating, the profiles measured in plasmas with LHCD are interesting since they are the first reported from JET in such plasmas. In particular, they allowed for studies of rotation in RF heated plasmas with q>1. The experimental results are presented together with an analysis of the torque from ICRF heated fast ions. SLEEP apnea syndromes ,ARRHYTHMIA - Abstract
We examined the effect of sleep-disordered breathing on heart rates and arrhythmias in men and women with disabling angina pectoris and verified coronary artery disease by an overnight sleep study and Holter recording. The number of oxyhaemoglobin desaturations > or =4% (ODI) and number of apnoea-hypopnoeas per hour of sleep (AHI) were recorded. ODI > or =5 and AHI > or =10 were used as measures of disordered breathing and patients below these limits formed the control groups. One-hundred and forty-one men and 98 women < or =70 years of age were randomly included. Thirty-eight percent of the men and 36% of the women had an ODI > or =5. No serious ventricular arrhythmias occurred. Women with disordered breathing (ODI > or =5) had higher heart rates (mean 63.3 vs 59.1, p < 0.05) and a higher occurrence of ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) during sleep (75th percentiles 2.5 vs 0.5 per hour, p < 0.01). In men, however, no significant association between disordered breathing and heart rates or arrhythmias was found. We conclude that serious arrhythmias are infrequent in unselected patients with coronary artery disease and mild to moderate sleep-disordered breathing. Disordered breathing in women is associated with higher heart rates and a higher occurrence of VPCs during sleep. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. In particular, the amplitude and frequency of type I ELMs have been actively controlled over a wide parameter range (q(95) = 3-4.8, beta(N)

- Abstract
This study compared the profitability when feeding silages of different grass species in enterprises with either dairy cows, beef breed bulls, or beef suckler cows. Traditional (TR) grasses timothy and meadow fescue was compared to the alternative wet-and-drought-resistant (WD) grasses tall fescue, festulolium, and reed canary grass in three different weather scenarios with either normal conditions (Ref), delayed late harvest time due to wet weather conditions (Wet), or decreased grass yield due to dry weather conditions (Dry). Contribution margin calculation was conducted for three geographical regions in Sweden. In the Ref and Wet scenarios, TR was more competitive than WD for dairy cows and beef bulls in all regions. Also in the Dry scenario, TR was more competitive than WD for dairy cows, as the lower production cost of the WD was outweighed by a lower milk yield of cows fed WD compared to cows fed TR. Contrary, for beef bulls, WD gave a higher contribution margin than TR did in the Dry scenario, where the break-even for WD being superior over TR occurred when more than every second year was dry. WD reed canary grass was always more competitive than TR and WD festulolium for beef cows.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to describe the development of Arabic and Swedish lexical organisation in bilingual children with language impairment (BLI)., Method: Lexical organisation was assessed through word associations in 10 BLI and 10 bilingual children with typical development (BTD), aged 6;2-8;0 years, matched for age and gender. The participants were assessed twice, with a 1-year interval. Word associations were coded as paradigmatic, syntagmatic, phonological, other and no answer. This study reports analyses of the semantically-related syntagmatic and paradigmatic associations. Using repeated measures ANOVA, main and interaction effects of Group, Time and Language were examined for paradigmatic and syntagmatic associations separately., Result: The interaction between Group and Time was significant for both associations. The BLI group increased syntagmatic associations from time 1 to time 2, while the BTD group increased paradigmatic associations. Results showed a significant main effect of Language for both types of associations, with better performance in Swedish. Significant Group by Language interactions resulted from lower Arabic than Swedish syntagmatic and paradigmatic scores for the BLI and BTD groups, respectively., Conclusion: Differing developmental trajectories indicate that bilingual children with LI develop lexical organisation at a slower pace than bilingual peers with typical language development.

- Abstract
The clinical assessment of language impairment (LI) in bilingual children imposes challenges for speech-language pathology services. Assessment tools standardized for monolingual populations increase the risk of misinterpreting bilingualism as LI. This Perspective article summarizes recent studies on the assessment of bilingual LI and presents new results on including non-linguistic measures of executive functions in the diagnostic assessment. Executive functions shows clinical utility as less subjected to language use and exposure than linguistic measures. A possible bilingual advantage, and consequences for speech-language pathology practices and future research are discussed.

- Abstract
Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is the focus of intense toxicity research due to its persistence and widespread occurrence in biota. Studies on benthic invertebrates have shown them to be subjects of high PFOS exposure. However, effects on benthic invertebrates exposed to PFOS in the field are still far from elucidated. To fill a knowledge gap on concentrations and effects in benthic invertebrates, a microcosm study on the benthic amphipod Monoporeia affinis was performed. Field collected M. affinis were analysed for PFOS and showed average background concentrations 39 and 58 ng/g (wet weight) in two different samplings. The field collected animals were exposed to three concentrations of PFOS (50, 200 and 5000 microg PFOS/L water) for 3 weeks during gonad development. Body burdens of PFOS were determined after experiment termination. Results showed negative effects on survival and reproduction effects such as decreased sexual maturation and decreased oocyte viability caused by PFOS exposure. Additionally, a follow-up experiment demonstrated a significant increase in the infection incidence by a microsporidian muscle parasite in animals exposed to PFOS at tissue concentrations in the range of concentrations found in field collected benthic amphipods. This is the first study to demonstrate increased microsporidian infection with pollutant exposure and it suggests that ecologically relevant PFOS concentrations could be sufficient to elicit these effects., (Copyright (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra is characteristic for Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. Mitochondrial dysfunction is believed to contribute to the etiology of PD. Although most cases are sporadic, recent evidence points to a number of genes involved in familial variants of PD. Among them, a loss-of-function of phosphatase and tensin homolog-induced kinase 1 (PINK1; PARK6) is associated with rare cases of autosomal recessive parkinsonism. In HeLa cells, RNA interference-mediated downregulation of PINK1 results in abnormal mitochondrial morphology and altered membrane potential. Morphological changes of mitochondria can be rescued by expression of wild-type PINK1 but not by PD-associated PINK1 mutants. Moreover, primary cells derived from patients with two different PINK1 mutants showed a similar defect in mitochondrial morphology. Human parkin but not PD-associated mutants could rescue mitochondrial pathology in human cells like wild-type PINK1. Our results may therefore suggest that PINK1 deficiency in humans results in mitochondrial abnormalities associated with cellular stress, a pathological phenotype, which can be ameliorated by enhanced expression of parkin.

- Abstract
The evidence linking sleep-disordered breathing to increased mortality and cardiovascular morbidity has been conflicting and inconclusive. We hypothesized that a potential adverse effect of disordered breathing would be more obvious in patients with established vascular disease. In a prospective cohort study 408 patients aged 70 yr or younger with verified coronary disease were followed for a median period of 5.1 yr. An apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of > or = 10 and an oxygen desaturation index (ODI) of > or = 5 were used as the diagnostic criteria for sleep-disordered breathing. The primary end point was a composite of death, cerebrovascular events, and myocardial infarction. There was a 70% relative increase and a 10.7% absolute increase in the primary composite end point in patients with disordered breathing defined as an ODI of > or = 5 (risk ratio 1.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.15-2.52, p = 0.008). Similarly, patients with an AHI of > or = 10 had a 62% relative increase and a 10.1% absolute increase in the composite endpoint (risk ratio 1.62, 95% CI 1.09-2.41, p = 0.017). An ODI of > or = 5 and an AHI of > or = 10 were both independently associated with cerebrovascular events (hazard ratio 2.62, 95% CI 1.26-5.46, p = 0.01, and hazard ratio 2.98, 95% CI 1.43-6.20, p = 0.004, respectively). We conclude that sleep-disordered breathing in patients with coronary artery disease is associated with a worse long-term prognosis and has an independent association with cerebrovascular events.

- Abstract
Study Objectives: To examine the occurrence of nocturnal myocardial ischemia and its relationship to sleep-disordered breathing (apneas and oxygen desaturations) in randomly selected men and women undergoing coronary angiography because of angina pectoris., Design: An observational study using an overnight sleep study and Holter recording to examine disordered breathing (oxyhemoglobin desaturations > or = 4% and apnea-hypopneas), heart rates, and ST-segment depressions (> or = 1 mm, > or = 1 min)., Setting: University Hospital, Umeå, a teaching hospital in northern Sweden., Patients: One hundred thirty-two men and 94 women referred for consideration of coronary intervention were randomly included, by lot., Results: ST-segment depressions occurred in 59% (134 of 226) of the patients, and nocturnal ST-segment depressions occurred in 31% (69 of 226). A ST-segment depression occurred within 2 min after an apnea-hypopnea or desaturation in 12% (27 of 226) of patients. This temporal association was seen in 19% of nocturnal ST-segment depressions (71 of 366), more frequently in men (p < 0.01) and in more severely disordered breathing (p < 0.001). Most of these ST-segment depressions were preceded by a series of breathing events: three or more apnea-hypopneas or desaturations or both in 70% (50 of 71)., Conclusion: Episodes of nocturnal myocardial ischemia are common in patients with angina pectoris. However, a temporal relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and myocardial ischemia is present only in a minority of the patients, but occurs more frequently in men and in more severely disordered breathing.

- Abstract
Glycine betaine is an osmoprotectant found in many organisms, including bacteria and higher plants. The bacterium Escherichia coli produces glycine betaine by a two-step pathway where choline dehydrogenase (CDH), encoded by betA, oxidizes choline to betaine aldehyde which is further oxidized to glycine betaine by the same enzyme. The second step, conversion of betaine aldehyde into glycine betaine, can also be performed by the second enzyme in the pathway, betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH), encoded by betB. Transformation of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), a species not accumulating glycine betaine, with the E. coli genes for glycine betaine biosynthesis, resulted in transgenic plants accumulating glycine betaine. Plants producing CDH were found to accumulate glycine betaine as did F1 progeny from crosses between CDH- and BADH-producing lines. Plants producing both CDH and BADH generally accumulated higher amounts of glycine betaine than plants producing CDH alone, as determined by 1H NMR analysis. Transgenic tobacco lines accumulating glycine betaine exhibited increased tolerance to salt stress as measured by biomass production of greenhouse-grown intact plants. Furthermore, experiments conducted with leaf discs from glycine betaine-accumulating plants indicated enhanced recovery from photoinhibition caused by high light and salt stress as well as improved tolerance to photoinhibition under low temperature conditions. In conclusion, introduction of glycine betaine production into tobacco is associated with increased stress tolerance probably partly due to improved protection of the photosynthetic apparatus.

- Abstract
In several organisms osmotic stress tolerance is mediated by the accumulation of the osmoprotective compound glycine betaine. With the ambition to transfer the betaine biosynthetic pathway into plants not capable of synthesizing this osmoprotectant, the Escherichia coli gene betB encoding the second enzyme in the pathway, betaine-aldehyde dehydrogenase was introduced into Nicotiana tabacum. The betB structural gene was fused to the promoter of ats1a, a gene coding for the small subunit of Rubisco in Arabidopsis thaliana. Two types of constructs were made, either encoding the N-terminal transit peptide for chloroplast targeting or without the targeting signal for cytoplasmic localization of the BetB polypeptide. Analysis of transgenic N. tabacum plants harboring these constructs showed that in both cases the transgenes were expressed. Northern analysis of the plants demonstrated the accumulation of betB-related mRNA of the correct size. The production and processing of the corresponding polypeptides could be demonstrated by immunoblotting using polyclonal antisera raised against the BetB polypeptide. The transit peptide encoded by ats1a was able to direct BetB to the chloroplast, as suggested by the presence of the correctly processed BetB polypeptide in the chloroplast fraction. High betaine-aldehyde dehydrogenase activity was detected in transgenic plants, both in those where the chimeric gene product was targeted to the chloroplast and those where it remained in the cytoplasm. The transgenic tobacco acquired resistance to the toxic intermediate, betaine aldehyde, in the betaine biosynthetic pathway indicating that the bacterial enzyme is biologically active in its new host. Furthermore, these transgenic plants were able to convert exogenously supplied betaine aldehyde efficiently to glycine betaine.
