Anecdotal reports of student parents' challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted this explorative study; investigating the lived experiences of UK student parents and the provision of Higher Education support. Data was derived from 91 online surveys, 20 follow-up interviews, and analysis of 100 university websites. This occurred during the pandemic lockdowns whenthe stresses, challenges and opportunities of balancing their simultaneous roles of parent and student were intensified due to school closures. The Double ABC-X model provided a framework for examining participant's lived experiences, and the role that Higher Education institutions could play in effecting positive coping and adaptation. Findings indicate that universities need to implement strategies to enhance support for this sector, including greater awareness of the vulnerabilities and challenges involved, more flexibility and adaptability in the university ethos, formal and informal policies and structures to provide more effective support and advice for juggling these simultaneous demands.

Disruptive behavior during instruction is a common problem in elementary classrooms. One intervention to reduce disruptive behavior is the Good Behavior Game (GBG). In this study, the students of 2 early elementary classrooms experienced 3 versions of the GBG: experimenter-implemented, teacher-implemented, and student-implemented. The effects of the GBG on disruptive behavior and peer interactions were evaluated using a combined reversal and multielement design. Student preference for conditions was assessed via a group arrangement of a concurrent-chains preference assessment. All versions of the game reduced disruptive behavior compared to baseline, but the rate of disruptive behavior was slightly higher during the teacher-implemented sessions in Class 1. Few peer interactions occurred during the game; however, negative interactions increased slightly in both classes during the GBG. Students overwhelmingly preferred the student-implemented version of the game. This study provides support for student implementation of the GBG and offers an approach to student shared governance in the classroom.

This article documents a systematic analysis of the online materials produced by UK churches for children's faith nurture in response to the closure of physical 'Sunday Schools' during the COVID-19 pandemic. A theoretical underpinning guided the development of a framework to examine the discipleship tools and to uncover examples of good practice which could inform children's online discipleship globally. Tentative conclusions highlight how faith nurture of this nature may be refined and enhanced and emphasises the significance of positive relationships to supplement these tools.

This phenomenological study examines lived experiences and perceptions of Christian parents of young children to investigate their approaches to faith activity and nurture and the extent to which this includes authenticity of welcome for young children in the modern-day church. Online survey data was analysed thematically through the lens of established theories regarding the nature of faith in the early years. Findings revealed that families with young children do wish to engage with their local church and wider Christian community, but often find existing approaches unsupportive and unhelpful. Significant adjustments are therefore required to church-led ethos and approaches to faith nurture to better serve the needs of young children. Recommendations are made for more flexibility and inclusivity within the church environment, enhanced partnership with parents, and greater church focus on co-constructing faith nurturing pathways within the home and church context to align more with relationships within the child’s microsystem. Students who fail to acquire foundational literacy skills during preschool are more likely to read below grade level average in elementary school and are at a heightened risk for future school failure, poverty, early mortality, and crime. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects and maintenance of and preference for paired kinesthetic movements (KM) to a traditional drill (TD) procedure on letter-sound correspondence and word recognition with 6 preschool children. In 6 of 11 evaluations, participants mastered the KM set in substantially fewer intervention sessions than the TD set. In 5 of 11 evaluations, participants mastered the KM and TD sets with little differentiation between the number of intervention sessions. No participant mastered the control set. Maintenance data demonstrate a higher number of correct responses for the KM condition across all weeks. Preference varied across participants and was not always consistent with the more effective intervention.

This exploratory study investigated the disruption to schools ministry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Perspectives of church leaders, Christian parents, Christian teachers and organisations involved in schools ministry were consulted using online surveys, interviews and focus groups, to examine how schools ministry could be rebuilt, incorporating reflective practice and hence bringing positive change. The severe impact of extensive school closures and restrictions strongly solidified the move from being largely provision of RE, lunchtime events and collective worship, to much broader methods in response to listening to the needs of the school (both staff and pupils in a secular/mainstream setting). A striking observation was that schools ministry was viewed in many of these case study settings as a peripheral aspect of local church ministry and often devolved to specialist organisations. Arising needs and models of ministry have emphasised the value and effectiveness of relational approaches and listening to the needs of schools and responding accordingly. This reinforces the need for collaborative approaches and long-term development of relationships between church and school. Training needs identified concerned relationship building and vision and strategy development, with many stakeholders perceiving this as the way forward to more effective ministry activity. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed health service delivery with vulnerable patients advised to isolate and appointments provided virtually. This change affected recruitment into an observational cohort study, undertaken at a single site, where participants with mitochondrial disorders were due to have specialist hospital-based audiovestibular tests. To ensure study viability, the study protocol was amended to allow home-based assessment for vulnerable participants. Here, we report outcomes of an online survey of participants who underwent home-based assessment, related to the experience, perceived benefits, and drawbacks of home audiovestibular assessments. Seventeen participants underwent home-based neuro-otological assessment, due to the need to isolate during COVID-19. Following the assessment, 16 out of 17 participants completed an anonymised online survey to share their experiences of the specialist home-based assessment. One hundred percent of participants rated the home-based assessment 'very positively' and would recommend it to others. Sixty-three percent rated it better than attending hospital outpatient testing settings. The benefits included no travel burden (27%) and reduced stress (13%). A majority reported no drawbacks in having the home visit. The patient-reported feedback suggests a person-centred approach where audiovestibular assessments are conducted in their homes is feasible for patients, acceptable and seen as beneficial to a vulnerable group of patients. This study aimed to test a model of factors associated with resilience and physical activity post-hip fracture and compare model fit between men and women. We used data from the seventh Baltimore Hip Study that included 339 participants. Model testing indicated that health status (men: β =.237, p =.002; women: β =.265, p = <.001), depression (men: β = −.245, p =.001; women: β = −.241, p = <.001), and optimism (men: β =.320, p = <.001; women: β =.282, p = <.001) were associated with resilience in men and women, but resilience was only associated with physical activity in men (β =.203, p =.038) and not in women. Social interaction was related to physical activity only among women (β =.206, p =.044). This study provides support for the relationship between resilience and physical activity at least among men. ObjectivesMethodsResultsConclusionsClinical ImplicationsTo describe nursing home (NH) characteristics associated with antipsychotic use and test whether associations changed after implementation of the National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care’s antipsychotic reduction initiative (ARI).Longitudinal quasi-experimental design using data from multiple sources and piecewise linear mixed models were used for statistical analyses.There was a significant decrease in monthly antipsychotic use across the study period (pre-ARI b = −0.0003, p <.001; post-ARI b = −0.0012, p <.001), which held after adjusting for NH characteristics. Registered nurse hours (b = −0.0026, p <.001), licensed practical nurse hours (b = −0.0019, p <.001), facility chain membership (b = −0.0013, p <.01), and health inspection ratings (b = −0.0003, p >.01) were associated with decreased antipsychotic use. Post-ARI changes in associations between NH characteristics and antipsychotic use were small and not statistically significant.Decreases in antipsychotic use were associated with most NH characteristics, and associations persisted post-ARI. Further research is warranted to examine the interactions between ARI policy and NH characteristics on antipsychotic prescribing, as well as other NH factors, such as facility prescribing cultures and clinical specialty of staff.Decreases in monthly antipsychotic use were observed following the ARI. BackgroundAlthough video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) initially demonstrated slow adoption amongst thoracic surgeons, VATS is now widely accepted and the techniques are associated with equivalent nodal dissection and, improved perioperative morbidity and, in some cases, superior perioperative survival compared to thoracotomy. Using a video-assisted, minimal access technique that requires marginal or no rib spreading, VATS provides improved postoperative pain and decreased time-to-recovery after surgery. However, complex resective cases, such as pneumonectomy, are not commonly accomplished minimally invasively. We share the surgical technique for VATS pneumonectomy based on our experience.MethodsA 71-year-old patient underwent VATS pneumonectomy for synchronous, ipsilateral primary non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).ResultsOur patient had no perioperative complications and was discharged to home on postoperative day 4. The patient's pain was managed with oral analgesics. Greater than ten lymph nodes were examined, all margins were negative for residual tumor. The patient did not require adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy.ConclusionsVATS pneumonectomy is a safe and effective procedure that provides many clinical benefits to the patient. Our results suggest that clinicians should consider VATS pneumonectomy for primary treatment of patients with synchronous primary lung cancers when appropriate.
