Abstract

Societal Impact Statement Summary Ecosystems are rapidly being transformed, pushing us towards irreversible losses and even extinctions. The Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework aims to curb biodiversity decline. An intriguing solution lies in seed banks—where plants store seeds in the soil. Restoration efforts can revive lost ecosystems by leveraging these seed banks. In the fynbos of South Africa, this study found that it is possible to bring back ecosystems that were lost as long ago as 100 years if conditions are right. Managers can achieve best results by applying a dry season prescribed burn following removal of the driver of degradation (e.g. pine plantations or invasions). Soil‐stored seed banks are a critical evolutionary strategy for plants as they can stabilize population dynamics in response to environmental fluctuations such as droughts and natural disturbances such as fires, thus improving ecosystem resilience. This study aimed to assess resilience during the first restoration cycle of endangered Sand Fynbos following pine harvesting and a prescribed burn in South Africa. We compared above ground populations and soil‐stored seed bank composition and focused on six perennial fynbos focal species in five 1 m2 plots. All six species are obligate reseeders with soil‐stored seed banks but represent a variety of important fynbos growth forms and seed types. We found that native soil‐seed bank density following over a century of plantation forestry and 10 years after the first fynbos restoration burn was comparable to, or exceeded, densities measured in other fynbos studies, especially seed banks of alien‐invaded fynbos ecosystems. The early years following pine harvesting and a restoration burn likely provide a pest‐ and predator‐free window of opportunity in which plants may re‐establish and flourish. Our results show that even for old forestry plantation areas, ecological restoration to the historic vegetation community is feasible, where there is retained seed bank resilience, through a combination of passive and active restoration methods. Ecological restoration in cases where soil seed banks persist is therefore a viable and critically important method to attain 30% conservation of terrestrial land in ecosystems with less than 30% remaining, as part of the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. 10. Delaying a prescribed burn to scale up the restoration of alien‐invaded Lowland Sand Fynbos in South Africa.

Abstract

Fire‐adapted species invading fire‐prone ecosystems in Mediterranean climate regions are difficult to control because they are equally responsive to restoration treatments. We assessed the efficacy of delaying a prescribed burn to promote the recruitment of native species in a Lowland Sand Fynbos ecosystem invaded by alien Acacia saligna. Acacia stands were felled and fallowed for 2 years before burning the slash and sowing pre‐treated fynbos seeds. We hypothesized that sowing pre‐treated fynbos seeds after fallowing cleared areas before burning would improve the regeneration of native species. Fallowing cleared areas would reduce the density of acacia seeds and post‐fire acacia recruitment while allowing felled acacia biomass to dry and decay over time leading to improved prescribed burn properties. Sowing pre‐treated fynbos seeds improved the recovery of native cover but had little effect on the recovery of native species diversity after 2 years. Although the rapid recruitment of annual native species did not affect acacia density, it might have contributed to reduced post‐fire acacia cover and allowed the native perennial species to establish. After 2 years of fallowing cleared areas, the density of acacia seeds and post‐fire acacia recruitment was reduced by ≈50% and 80% respectively. Although too dense to be outcompeted by recruited native species alone, this reduced acacia recruitment helped to decrease and delay the need for follow‐up acacia clearing as it was where burning occurred soon after felling acacia stands. The recruited native species managed to establish before the acacia emergents were removed unlike where burning occurs soon after felling and where native species were outcompeted resulting in the need for follow‐up sowing. In conclusion, building resilience against acacia resurgence by increasing the pool of sown species to recover a good cover of native species in combination with the timely removal of acacia recruits can help to scale up restoration. Abstract

Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live in these areas. Bold global targets have been set for dryland restoration to restore millions of hectares of degraded land. These targets have been questioned as overly ambitious, but without a global evaluation of successes and failures it is impossible to gauge feasibility. Here we examine restoration seeding outcomes across 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations of 671 plant species. Our findings suggest reasons for optimism. Seeding had a positive impact on species presence: in almost a third of all treatments, 100% of species seeded were growing at first monitoring. However, dryland restoration is risky: 17% of projects failed, with no establishment of any seeded species, and consistent declines were found in seeded species as projects matured. Across projects, higher seeding rates and larger seed sizes resulted in a greater probability of recruitment, with further influences on species success including site aridity, taxonomic identity and species life form. Our findings suggest that investigations examining these predictive factors will yield more effective and informed restoration decision-making.

Abstract

The method of clearing alien species and the nature of the soil seedbank influence the quality of restoration outcomes, particularly in fire‐prone ecosystems heavily invaded with fire‐adapted alien species. One of the challenges encountered is reducing the likelihood of reinvasions when the invading species are equally responsive to restoration treatments. By simulating the fire effects that are required to regenerate native vegetation, the study tested whether the recovery of the native species could be initiated without conducting a prescribed ecological burn. In a case study of South African Cape Flats Sand Fynbos with a heavy invasion of Acacia saligna, the felled acacia were stacked into brush piles, with the litter raked off from the sowing areas and the collected seeds were pre‐treated for germination. Despite the lack of a fire, the sowing of pre‐treated seeds on raked plots led to good recovery of native vegetation over time. This was indicated by the recovery of higher density, cover and richness of native species in sown plots compared with unsown treatments. However, the recovery of native species had not approached the vegetation structure comparable to a reference site after 2 years; that is, only partial fynbos structure was recovered. The recruitment of acacia was less dense without fire, as hypothesised, and independent of treatment. However, over time, control plots had higher acacia cover than other treatments. Despite this sparse recruitment of acacia, the acacia seedbank decreased naturally to about 50% of the initial size over 2 years in control plots. Raking off litter during site preparation removed 50% of the acacia seedbank which decreased slightly thereafter. Consequently, the residual acacia seedbank was relatively similar across treatments after 2 and a half years. In conclusion, circumventing prescribed burns in heavily degraded fynbos ecosystems is a scalable restoration strategy, as recruitment of alien acacia was minimized, its seedbank declined significantly, and good native cover developed after clearing and sowing. Abstract

Invasive alien plants impact ecosystems, which often necessitates their removal. Where indigenous species recovery fails following removal alone, an active intervention involving reintroduction of seed of native species may be needed. This study investigated the potential for a combination of the fire cues of smoke and heat as a pre-treatment of seeds in breaking dormancy and facilitating increased germination. Species were selected to represent different functional types within Cape Flats Sand Fynbos; a fire-prone, critically endangered vegetation type in South Africa. Seeds were exposed to either a heat pulse (temperatures between 60 and 300°C for durations of between 30 s and 20 min) or dry after-ripening (1 or 2 months at milder temperatures of 45°C or less). Thereafter, seeds were soaked in smoke solution for 18 h and subsequently placed on agar at 10/20°C for germination. Most species fell into one of two main groups: Seed germination in the first group was greatest following a lower temperature (60°C) heat pulse, an extended period of mild temperature (20/40°C or 45°C) exposure, or no pre-treatment with heat. Seed germination in the second group was promoted after brief exposure to higher (100°C) temperatures. No germination occurred in any species following heat treatments of 150°C or higher. Species which responded better to higher temperatures were mainly those possessing physical dormancy, but seed morphology did not correlate with germination success. This study showed that heat stimulation of seeds is more widespread in fynbos plant families than previously known and will enable the development of better seed pre-treatment protocols before large-scale sowing as an active restoration treatment after alien plant clearing. 35. The occurrence of seed-feeding Zulubius acaciaphagus(Hemiptera, Alydidae) and its effects on Acacia cyclopsseed germination and seed banks in South Africa

Abstract

Following recent observations of an indigenous hemipteran Zulubius acaciaphagusfeeding on alien Acacia cyclopsseeds, we surveyed its occurrence and effects throughout the plant’s distributional range. Zulubius acaciaphagusoccurred at all study sites, but when surveyed was most abundant at the north-western extreme of the plant’s distributional range, where the climate is hotter and drier. Intensity of feeding correlated positively with percentage seed rotting and negatively with percentage seed viability, but was not correlated with percentage spontaneous seed germination. Soil-seed density did not relate to alydid density, possibly because feeding intensity was low; mean maximum daily temperature and annual rainfall (or related factors) apparently have a major effect on seed density. Although Z. acaciaphagusdestroyed up to 84% of the A. cyclopsseed crop, detailed studies of the alydid’s population dynamics are required to assess its potential as a controlling agent of the alien invader.
