Despite countless advances in recent years, exploration for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits remains challenging. This is particularly the case in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, where outcrop is limited, weathering is deep and extensive, and metamorphism is variable. At Erayinia in the southern Kurnalpi terrane, intercepts of VMS-style mineralization occur along ~35 km strike length of stratigraphy, and a small Zn (-Cu) deposit has been defined at King (2.15 Mt at 3.47% Zn). An extensive aircore and reverse circulation drilling campaign on the regional stratigraphy identified additional VMS targets, including the King North prospect. Through a combination of detailed rock chip logging, petrography (inc. SEM imaging), and lithogeochemistry, we have reconstructed the volcanic stratigraphy and alteration halos associated with the King North prospect. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages and geochemical characteristics at King North (Mg-Si-K enrichment, Na depletion, and high Sb, Tl, Eu/Eu*, alteration index, CCPI, and normative corundum abundance values) are consistent with an overturned VMS system. The overturned footwall stratigraphy at King North is dominated by metamorphosed volcanic rocks, namely the following: garnet amphibolite (tholeiitic, basaltic), biotite amphibolite (andesitic, calc-alkaline), chlorite–quartz schist (dacitic), and narrow horizons of muscovite–quartz schist (dacitic to rhyolitic, HFSE-enriched). The hanging-wall to the Zn-bearing sequence is characterized by quartz–albite schists (metasedimentary rocks) and thick sequences of amphibolite (calc-alkaline, basaltic andesite). An iron-rich unit (>25% Fe2O3) of chlorite–actinolite–quartz schist, interpreted as a meta-exhalite, is associated with significant Cu-Au mineralization, adjacent to a likely syn-volcanic fault. Extensive Mg metasomatism of the immediate felsic footwall is represented by muscovite–chlorite schist. Diamond drilling into the deep hanging-wall stratigraphy at both King North and King has also revealed the potential for additional, stacked VMS prospective horizons in the greenstone belt stratigraphy. The discovery of HFSE-enriched rhyolites, zones of muscovite–chlorite schist, presence of abundant sulfide-rich argillaceous metasedimentary rocks, and a second upper meta-exhalite horizon further expand the exploration potential of the King–King North region. Our combined petrographic and lithogeochemical approach demonstrates that complex volcanic lithologies and VMS alteration signatures can be established across variably metamorphosed greenstone belts. This has wider implications for more cost-effective exploration across the Yilgarn Craton, utilizing RC drilling to reconstruct the local geology and identify proximal halos, and limiting more costly diamond drilling to key areas of complex geology and deeper EM targets. Mechanisms for invisible gold enrichment hosted within Paleoproterozoic Fe-rich metamorphic rocks (marble, biotite schist, and quartz-feldspar schist) in the Liaodong Peninsula, NE China are still unclear. In this study, we choose the Xiaotongjiapuzi deposit as a case study, and present a detailed ore deposit geology and dataset of in situ chemical compositions of Fe-sulfides to address this issue. Fe-sulfides have the following paragenesis: metamorphic pyrite (Py0), first-ore stage pyrite (Py1, Py2), and a second-ore stage comprising arsenopyrite (Apy1, Apy2) and two phases of marcasite (Mas(a-b)). Early metamorphic pyrite (Py0) has relatively low concentrations of Au (<0.06–0.17 ppm). The significantly higher concentrations of Au in Py2 (1.55–423 ppm) and Apy2 (105–341 ppm) than those of Py1 (0.068–0.123 ppm) and Apy1 (2.90–7.70 ppm) suggest that gold prefers to incorporate into non-stoichiometric hydrothermal Fe-sulfides. Substitution of As1- and As3+ in Fe-sulfides may account for the coupled geochemical behavior between As and Au, Ag, Pb, Zn, Cu. Replacement led to fractured Py1 becoming enriched in Au, As, Ag, Cu, Sb and Pb, and Py0 being replaced by Au, As, Ag, Cu, Sb and Pb-rich marcasite. In situ sulfur analysis shows that Py0 has highly positive δ34S values (+13.62 to +18.55‰), suggesting it is associated with metasediments (+14 to +20‰). Py1, Py2, Apy1, and Apy2 are isotopically homogeneous and have δ34S values of +3.67 to +7.50‰, indicative of a magmatic phase. Both generations of marcasite, which replaced Py0, have yielded mixed sulfur isotopic signatures (δ34S values of +8.66 to +13.18‰). The gold mineralization in the Xiaotongjiapuzi gold deposit was the result of magmatic-hydrothermal processes. We propose two key factors: i) abundant defects in non-stoichiometric Fe-sulfides, and ii) replacement processes can cause invisible gold enrichment in Fe-sulfides in the Liaodong Peninsula. The Lhasa terrane is one of the major segments of the Tibetan Plateau, with widespread Mesozoic to Cenozoic magmatic and metallogenic records. Here, we investigate timing and characteristics of magmatism associated with the Lunggar Fe skarn deposit in Central Lhasa. We also present Sr–Nd–Pb and Hf (zircon) isotopic data on three associated intrusions to gain insights on the tectonic and metallogenic evolution of the region. Our data reveal at least two magmatic pulses in Lunggar represented by Early Cretaceous I‐type granodiorite (112.9 ± 1.5 Ma) and granite porphyry (112.6 ± 1.3 Ma) with magma generation related to slab break‐off associated with the Bangong–Nujiang Ocean during closure of the Meso‐Tethyan ocean at ~113 Ma. Iron skarn mineralization at Lunggar was contemporaneous with local Early Cretaceous intrusive activity. Following this, Late Cretaceous adakitic diorite (90.5 ± 1.5 Ma) formed from delaminated thickened crust at ~91 Ma related to the northern subduction of the Yarlung‐Zangbo oceanic plate. We also provide a comprehensive review of the Cretaceous tectonic evolution of Central Lhasa, which trace the tectonic evolution as follows: (a) 145–120 Ma: southward subduction of the Bangong–Nujiang oceanic plate under the Lhasa terrane; (b) 120–115 Ma: Lhasa‐Qiangtang continental collision; (c) 115–110 Ma: slab break‐off of the Bangong–Nujiang Ocean; (d) 110–95 Ma: crustal thickening of the Central Lhasa lower crust; (e) 95–80 Ma: delamination of lithospheric mantle; and (f) 80–65 Ma: northward subduction of the Yarlung‐Zangbo oceanic plate and subsequent slab rollback. The related metallogenic events in Central Lhasa include (a) ~115–110 Ma skarn Fe mineralization associated with slab break‐off; (b) ~90–80 Ma porphyry Cu–Au mineralization formed in delaminated thickened crust of Central Lhasa; and (c) ~65 Ma skarn Pb–Zn mineralization produced from slab rollback of the Yarlung‐Zangbo Ocean. The Tibetan Plateau is a composite orogenic belt that has experienced prolonged subduction, obduction, and collisional processes, during the opening and closure of successive Tethyan oceans. We present new zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes, and whole-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data from the Early Paleogene Longge'er gabbro and Qingduxiang granite of Central Lhasa, southern Tibet. Together these allow us to refine existing models for widespread magmatic activity associated with the subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean. The Longge'er gabbro (53.5 ± 1.6 Ma) belongs to the low-K tholeiitic to medium-K and metaluminous series, while the Qingduxiang granite (54.5 ± 0.9 Ma) is characterized as high-K, calc-alkaline, metaluminous, and of I-type affinity. Both intrusions are enriched in the LREE and depleted in the HREE with negative Eu, Ba, Nb, Ta, Sr, and Ti anomalies. Trace elements characteristics and enriched whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb and zircon Hf isotopic compositions demonstrate that the gabbro was derived from partial melting of enriched lithosphere mantle metasomatized by Central-Lhasa ancient crustal materials, while the I-type granite was generated by partial melting of Central-Lhasa ancient lower crust combined with magmas derived from Southern-Lhasa juvenile crust. Geochemical compositions of the gabbro and granite reveal the Early Paleogene magmatism was emplaced in a shallow extensional setting related to slab break off following the closure of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean. Combined with previous studies, we can infer slab rollback occurred from Late Cretaceous (~69 Ma) to Early Eocene (55 Ma), while slab break off was shortly lived at ca. 55-49 Ma. Recently identified Early Jurassic, Early Cretaceous, and Late Cretaceous granites of the Tengchong terrane, SW China, help to refine our understanding of the Mesozoic tectonic-magmatic evolutionary history of the region. We present new zircon U-Pb geochronological, Lu-Hf isotopic and geochemical data on these rocks. The zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages of the Mangzhangxiang, Laochangpo, and Guyong granites, and Guyong granodioritic microgranular enclaves are 185.6, 120.7, 72.9, and 72.7 Ma, respectively. Geochemical and Hf isotopic characteristics suggest the Mangzhangxiang and Laochangpo S-type granites were derived from partial melting of felsic crust and that the Guyong I-type granite and associated MMEs were generated through magma mixing/mingling. Mesozoic magmatism in the Tengchong terrane can be divided into three episodes: (1) the Triassic syn- and post-collisional magmatic event was related to the closure of the Palaeo-Tethyan Ocean, as represented by the Changning-Menglian suture zone; (2) the Jurassic to Early Cretaceous magmatism was related to the subduction of the Meso-Tethyan oceanic crust, as represented by the Myitkyina ophiolite belt; and (3) the Late Cretaceous magmatism was related to the subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic crust, as represented by the Kalaymyo ophiolite belt. Quartz from the stockwork zone of various Cyprus type volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (Boccassuolo, Reppia, Campegli, Bargone and Vigonzano) from the unmetamorphosed, Jurassic Northern Apennine ophiolites was studied in order to provide details on the submarine hydrothermal conditions and the characteristics for ore formation. Our detailed SEM-CL investigation of quartz contributed to a robust characterization and interpretation of primary fluid inclusions and microthermometry data. SEM-CL imaging was also useful for reconstructing the consecutive steps of quartz precipitation. The determination of trace element contents according to growth zoning in quartz by LA-ICP-MS constrained the compositional variations of parent fluids during the hydrothermal activity. A continuously cooling fluid regime characterized each studied volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) occurrence although the minimum formation temperatures were different (Bargone: 110–270 °C; Boccassuolo: 60–360 °C; Campegli: 110–225 °C; Reppia: 50–205 °C; Vigonzano: 260–330 °C), the range of temperature most probably depends on the original position of sampling in relation to the centers of the hydrothermal systems. Compositional changes are reflected by variations in the methane content (0.13–0.33 mol/kg) and salinity (2.6–9.3 NaCl equiv. wt. %) in the fluid inclusions of quartz and calcite as well as a changeable Al content (11–1526 ppm) in quartz. This study demonstrates that the combined use of SEM-CL imaging and LA-ICP-MS analyses, coupled with fluid inclusion microthermometry, can constrain the different fluid conditions of ore forming and the barren stages of evolving submarine hydrothermal systems.
